Travelling by train? Save money on your trip with these insider commuter tips
T icketing confusion is rife among rail travellers in the UK. ‘Peak’, ‘ off-peak ’, ‘advance’, ‘split ticket’, ‘anytime return’ – the jargon is confusing.
In fact, more than half of passengers think there are too many options.
With multiple websites and apps offering the ‘best’ deals , it’s no surprise one fifth of rail users say they’re unable to find the cheapest ticket for their journey, according to ticket technology firm SilverRail.
With rail fares in England due to rise by up to 4.9 per cent next month, it’s never been more important to find ways to save money. Here are our top hacks for getting the best deals.
Book in advance
The best way to save money is to plan ahead and book in advance.
You can save up to 60% on tickets if you’re able to travel on a specific train and buy the ticket several weeks ahead. There are a limited number of low-price tickets, which is why it pays to buy early.
‘The only downside is that if you’re unable to travel, you may have to buy a new ticket,’ says Scott Dixon of The Complaints Resolver website.
Travel off-peak
If possible, avoid peak times.
These vary depending on the train operator and location, but peak times are usually before 9.30am and between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays.
If your journey is on the cusp of peak time, it may be possible to buy a ticket for part of the journey in peak time and the rest off-peak.
Split your ticket
Huge savings can be made by splitting tickets.
This could be as simple as buying two singles rather than a return, or more complicated by breaking up your journey. Apps such as TrainSplit will work out the best way to split your ticket but charge a small fee.
The cheaper but more time-consuming option is to buy the separate tickets direct from the train operator. This can also be a good way to travel first class for part of your journey for just a few pounds extra.
Platforms such as trainline.com are useful for searching routes that use different operators, but they charge a booking fee.
For the best price, go straight to the individual operators. Splitting a ticket yourself also gives bigger savings than you’d get using the trainline.com’s SplitSave or an app.
Avoid London
Routes through London can come at a premium.
If possible, avoid the English capital and take an alternative route – but be aware these journeys may be slower.
Get a railcard
Various railcards offer about one-third off the normal ticket price.
Discounts are available for younger and older travellers as well as families and people who regularly travel together.
‘Over-50s in Scotland can get a railcard for £15, which qualifies for flat-rate travel from £17 return [anywhere in Scotland], with 50 per cent off food and drinks and 20 per cent discounts for advance and off-peak tickets when you book online,’ says Scott.
Eat like a king on trains with a second class ticket:
In a now viral tweet, 21-year-old travel enthusiast Emily Pettitt from London shared her ‘unbelievable’ experience dining on Great Western Railway – but it set her back a healthy £54.50.
The train line’s Pullman Dining experience offers a three course meal for just £39.50 (on top of your hefty train fare, of course) but if you order the fillet steak you’ll have to cough up an extra £15.
You’ll get just a five ounce slab of beef and it’s no Salt Bae tomahawk either. We guess in Nusr-et Steakhouse the seats don’t come with adjustable armrests or faulty plug sockets to charge your phone but you can’t have it all.
Emily thinks Pullman Dining is something ‘everyone should experience’ and it is available to both standard class travellers and first class ticket holders.
It’s important to note though, that first class travellers can reserve a spot in the Pullman carriage to dine, up to two weeks before they travel, while those standard class can’t book and have to walk in hoping for a free table.
Steak does taste better with a side of capitalism, after all.
Consider a season ticket
If you commute on the train, a season ticket could offer big savings.
It can be weekly, monthly or annual. If you work from home for part of the week, a flexi season ticket is a good option.
This normally allows eight days of travel in 28 days at any time between two stations. Just make sure a split ticket won’t be cheaper.
Claim compensation
If your train is delayed or cancelled, you’re entitled to compensation.
The amount increases the longer the delay. Delay Repay is a scheme that makes it easier for you to claim. Simply put in the details of the journey and your bank details, then upload your ticket.
You’ll receive a payment within a week or so – the amount varies, but it can be between 25% and 100% of the ticket price.
Visit your train company’s website to find out how to make a claim.

Corry link in Erie to Pittsburgh Trail is on hold. Why neighbors don't want it
CORRY — A planned Corry link in the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail is on hold, at least for now.
The city has received state grant money to improve the trail along a former rail line between Route 6 and Elk Street. But earlier this month, Corry City Council voted to barricade each end of the path, which has been a community walking route since tracks were removed in the mid-1980s.
The action was mainly due to concerns raised by neighboring property owners, Mayor Michael Baker said.
It's unclear when or if the barricades will be removed and if the trail will be improved as planned.
The trail plan
Trail planning is rooted in the 2020 Corry Connects active transportation initiative by the city and Corry's Blue Zones project, established in 2019 to improve public health and well-being.
The half-mile trail from Elk Street to the Corry Junction Greenway Trail head at Route 6 was among six priorities of the Corry Connects plan, which was adopted by Corry City Council in 2021 as a guideline for future policy. The Corry Junction Greenway Trail already is part of the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail.
Trails and greenspace additionally were identified as one of five community priorities in a strategic plan completed by Impact Corry, a nonprofit development organization, in 2021. Trails would provide Corry residents with safe walking and biking routes and would attract visitors, according to the plan.
Corry City Council voted in May 2021 to partner with Impact Corry and to be the lead applicant for a state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant to improve the Route 6 to Elk Street trail, which is on city-owned property. The city also committed $14,000 and the use of city equipment and labor for the project.
Corry was awarded a $73,000 DCNR grant in December 2021 to further clear the trail and install a limestone surface and trail signs.

Concerns about the trail
Owners of properties bordering the trail have expressed concerns about privacy, noise, security, property values, and potential vandalism, drug activity and thefts.
The concerns presented during recent Corry City Council meetings are valid, Corry Mayor Michael Baker said.
"It's a public nuisance, period," Baker said of the trail. "Having it in your backyard is an invasion of privacy."
Improving the trail and connecting it to others would only make problems worse, Baker said.
"This is just the beginning of the trails they want to put in. If there are this many problems with one-third of that, what would we have when it's all done," Baker said.
The trail should remain closed and grant money to improve it should be returned, Baker said.
"The project just isn't worth the hassle and isn't worth aggravating neighbors. It's just not worth it, period," Baker said. "The trail will be blocked off forever as far as I'm concerned. As mayor, I'm not going to let anybody build a public nuisance."
Trails should be sited away from neighborhoods, Baker said.
"Trails are a good thing but have to be in a good spot, not in backyards," Baker said.
Approximately 60 residential and commercial properties border the trail, according to Impact Corry.
Thirteen neighboring property owners responding to a city survey in March indicated that they oppose the trail. Seven indicated that they support the trail or ranked themselves as neutral.
Support for the trail
Corry residents also have addressed City Council in support of the trail, saying it's a safe and pleasant route, removed from traffic, to local destinations, including Mead Park.
Trail improvements would boost options for outdoor recreation and bring visitors and spending to Corry, supporters said. Supporters include Corry Area Chamber of Commerce and Corry Community Foundation representatives who have addressed council or had statements read to council encouraging trail improvements.
"The community has been pretty receptive to the trail," said Seth Trott, treasurer of the Impact Corry board of directors. "There are some who don't want the trail, especially those with homes near or touching the trail. But for the most part, the community has been widely accepting of it."
The Corry Connects plan identified trails, including the Route 6 to Elk Street trail, as community priorities following a public survey, stakeholder meetings and information provided by the public during community events.
A new Impact Corry petition to save the trail had more than 540 signatures by Monday, in a little over a week.
The trail would connect with others planned in neighboring and nearby communities, including Union City, as part of the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail . The local completion of that trail is identified as a main focus for southeastern Erie County in the Erie County Parks, Trails and Recreation Plan adopted by Erie County Council in July 2020.
"The trail plan also aligns with (an Erie Regional Chamber & Growth Partnership) report that identifies outdoor recreation and tourism as one of six areas of continuing growth in our county," Impact Corry Secretary Jordan Fuller said. Fuller is the director of the Erie Regional Chamber & Growth Partnership business accelerator.
The state also is working to strengthen outdoor recreation, both for residents and to draw new residents and visitors to Pennsylvania. The outdoor recreation industry contributes almost $17 billion to the state's economy, according to the Pennsylvania Office of Outdoor Recreation , created last year to grow the industry.
"Trail networks align almost identically with that strategy," Trott said.
Decisions ahead
State grant funding for the trail is available through 2025. The project would have to be submitted for proposals from contractors. Corry City Council has not authorized that process.
A contract then would have to be awarded by the city. Trail work must be completed by Dec. 31, 2025, to receive the state funding.
"It gives us time to work through neighbors' concerns and create solutions," Fuller said.
Impact Corry has offered to raise money to install privacy screening and security cameras along the path and to maintain the trail, Impact Corry Vice President Erin Passinger said.
"We want to find a solution to make everyone happy. So far the city has not been very receptive to trying to make that happen," Passinger said.
The trail was barricaded at City Council's order in early June pending a decision on whether Impact Corry should be replaced as coordinator for the trail project. No decision has been made on the matter.
Replacing the organization with no guarantee that the trail will be completed could require Impact Corry to repay more than $90,000 already spent on engineering and other work for the project, organization directors said.
Neighbors' concerns about the trail will be paramount in any decisions on its future, Mayor Baker said.
"I don't want any citizens of Corry to get the idea that we're going to put a trail through their backyard whether they like it or not," Baker said. "Citizens have to be protected, and that's my job."

Good and helpful app
Update: 6-5: most of the issues I described are from me not understanding how to use the app. GPS still lags, but have a little patients and the route always updates. Great app. I have been using this app for a week. I am visiting family in Hawaii(Oahu). I would be lost without the help of this app. The minor things I have experienced with the app is the gps seems to lag. When I set my destination, as I begin to walk I didn’t see the icon move in the app. Until a few minutes later, also when I begin my trip I read what it says, but at times it is not clear which way to go. Another thing I noticed, when the app tells you what bus to catch, it may give you multiple bus numbers. When I catch one of the bus, the bus number does not match. When the bus moves, the icon does not move, until a few moments later. Then the app seems to catch up and it begins to show the route and the location of where you at as you progress along your trip. It should give and option to select what bus you are on. I am still learning how to use this. I guess I said all that to stay this. When you set your destination, it should lock in your destination choice. I have of habit of planning other destination along my route, my original destination seems to get lost and I struggle to find my original route I planned. You can use Google maps to do the same as this app, but Moove it does it way better. If traveling, I highly recommend this app.
Pocket Travel Guide
Moovit is a must have. We used it nonstop while on our NYC vacation. NYC is big and spread out but getting around is a snap with this app. Just punch in where you want to go (restaurant, hotel, attraction, address, etc...) and it tells you how long it will take to get there and (1) which subway station is closest, (2) gives you gps walking directions to get there, (3) tells you which line to get on, (4) lets you know how many minutes until the next 3 subways on that line will arrive at your station, (5) tells you how many stops until you need to get off, (6) shows you a list of all the stops until your departure, (7) updates that list as you ride, (8) alerts you before your last stop telling you to get off, and (9) gives you walking directions to wherever you are trying to get to. As a visitor I don’t know the terminal ends of the subway lines, and that is what the subways say on them and on the signs. It would give users more confidence if the app said “D toward Brighton Beach” so you feel better about getting on a train going towards a destination you don’t know. That said, the app was always right and the only time we got on the right line going the wrong direction was because we second guessed the app.
Most Useful App I Own
Just took a trip to Italy, France and Portugal and used this in Rome, Venice, Paris and Lisbon. It automatically changes your metro city, tells you which bus/train/metro/vaporetto/traghetto to take, gives you time estimates for your whole trip as well as public transport schedules. You can pick your route based on what’s available right now, when you want to leave, or when you want to arrive, so it’s super handy when you’re trying to figure out when to leave your hotel the next morning to get to exhibit “x” by 8 am. You can also choose your departure location so you can start from your location now or pick where you’ll be in 2 hours so you can plan your day. They also alert you of closures and problems, track your progress in real time via gps, and alert you when your stop is coming up. This app allowed us to safely and effectively ride public transport in countries where we did not speak the language. SO effective and reduced the stress of figuring out cheap transportation. Really, this app is a 100 out of 5 stars, absolutely LOVED it!!!!

Map reveals where new rail routes could be introduced across the UK
Share this with
More frequent and new rail services could be on the way, as independent operators roll out plans to launch extra trains around the country.
Stirling in Scotland and Carmarthen in Wales could be some of the first places to have direct links to London after proposals from prospective open-access company Grand Union Trains (GUT).
It is one of several operators to give rail travel a boost and offer low fares on already expensive routes.
They are backed by the UK government , which says the rise of open access gives customers more choice and increases passenger numbers.
Rail minister Huw Merriman said: ‘It’s not just a question of us having rail operators compete with each other.
‘There’s an opportunity for rail to take passengers that may otherwise fly or indeed drive.
‘Open access is such a positive.’
Mr Merriman added: ‘There’s no industrial action on open-access operators, perhaps because it’s a fresher way of working with the workforce rather than on an old rule book basis.’
During recent rail strikes, companies like Lumo and Grand Central have been able to continue running services due to their separate status.
GUT is also consulting on a possible service between Edinburgh and Cardiff. There is currently no direct route connecting the Scottish and Welsh capitals.
Other would-be open-access operators include Go-Op, which aims to run services between Taunton and both Weston-super-Mare and Swindon, and Wrexham, Shropshire & Midlands Railway, which hopes to create a route between London Euston and Wrexham.
Lumo also plans to extend its route between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh to reach Glasgow, while FirstGroup wants to launch a service between the same London terminus and Sheffield.
What is an open-access rail operator?
Most of the major rail operators in the UK are either owned or paid management fees by the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments.
LNER, Scotrail, CrossCountry, Avanti West Coast and many, many others fall into this category.
But the tracks can also be used by open-access operators, which set their own fares, take full commercial risk, and don’t receive any taxpayer-funded subsidies.
They include companies like Lumo, Grand Central, Heathrow Express, Eurostar and Hull Trains – with several more due to spring up soon.
Proponents say the availability of these other options increases competition which drives down fares.
But critics argue that the companies are simply taking advantage of a ‘false economy’, and it would be better for passengers if the large operators just simplified their timetables.
Grand Central managing director Ian Yeowart said: ‘It’s not only good for passengers – as whether (the operators) survive depends on how good they are and what their customers think – but there are no handouts from the government.
‘Like every other business, if people don’t like it and don’t come, it won’t survive.’
But Gareth Dennis, an engineer who writes about the rail industry, said open-access services should not be permitted in the UK because of the complexity of fitting the trains into already crammed timetables.
He said: ‘The argument on the Continent for open access operators is that they provide competition, but there’s no meaningful competition on a rail network that’s as saturated as ours.
‘What you need is a simple, repetitive timetable that moves huge numbers of people.’
Mr Dennis argued that the operators could charge lower fares because they use depots that exist for other companies and can recruit staff that had been trained already rather than training their own.
He added: ‘It’s a false economy really.’

New plan: 2 potential long-distance passenger rail routes through Cincinnati
by James Pilcher, WKRC
QUEENSGATE, Ohio (WKRC) - Cincinnati currently has one route running through the Amtrak station at Union Terminal, but a new federal plan called for that number to triple, with some major points both south and west.
Earlier in June, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) released its final proposal for additional long-distance passenger rail routes to be added, which was paid for with $66 billion from the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill passed nearly three years ago.
The existing long-range route map for Amtrak includes the Cardinal Line connecting Chicago to New York City through Cincinnati.
The proposal included two new Cincinnati stops, one on a new line that would connect Detroit through Nashville and end in New Orleans. The other would connect New York to Dallas-Fort Worth, again running through Cincinnati. This would be in addition to the Cardinal Line, not replacing it.
According to Ohio rail advocates, this would also be in addition to the proposed line connecting Cincinnati to Dayton, Columbus, and Cleveland. That plan is still on the table as a corridor route as part of the proposed passenger rail expansion.
"So, it's a huge potential win, assuming that we get the funding and we're able to roll forward with these long-distance routes," said All Aboard Ohio Chairman Mitch Radakovich. "We're going to get connected to a bunch of different cities."
Both new lines could also connect with possible stations in Springfield, Dayton, and Columbus, plus new stops in Louisville and Bowling Green in Kentucky. But these stops are listed as possibilities, not final decisions in the FRA report.
The agency will present a final plan to Congress later in 2024 and will then determine what each line would cost. The final decisions on those routes would then be made sometime in 2025 after getting Congressional approval. The FRA didn't have anyone available for an interview due to the Juneteenth holiday.
Amtrak's Cardinal Line service between Chicago and New York currently stops in Cincinnati at about 3:30 a.m. on its way to New York and about 1:40 a.m. on its way to Chicago.
Both proposed route expansions would include daytime stops in Cincinnati.
"And that's super exciting, right, to be able to see daytime trains going into Union Terminal," Radakovich said. "We also know that if the 3C+D route comes to fruition, those are going to be daytime trains into Union Terminal as well."
The plan currently ranks the Dallas to New York route as third on the priority list. The Detroit to New Orleans route ranked toward the bottom of the list.
