The mountains surrounding Quito provide for some great day tours.  We had time for one tour on our first visit to Ecuador and chose the Laguna Quilotoa day trip.

Laguna Quilotoa is a stunning emerald-coloured lake in the crater of a dormant volcano, in the heart of the Andes Mountain range.  The caldera has a diameter of 3km and is becoming a popular place to visit thanks to its beauty and the hiking options surrounding it.

We generally prefer independent travel but if you are limited in time, we really feel the Quilotoa Lake tour is the best option.  Let us tell you why!

Laguna Quilotoa Day Trip

The tours begin early, between 6:30 and 7 am, picking up passengers in both the Old Town and La Mariscal.  One of the downsides of the day trip from Quito is the time spent in transit.  However, the views as you are driven through the Route of Volcanoes are breathtaking and make the time fly by.

There are also a few stops built into the tour that add great value and break up the monotony.  Keep reading to find out what to expect.

We highly recommend CarpeDM tour company.  They are situated in the Old Town although strangely they are inside the Secret Garden Hostel rather than their own Casa CarpeDM hostel one block over.  If you stay in Casa CarpeDM, as we did, they offer a $5 discount on their day tours.

We used them on our second visit to Quito and found them to be organized, friendly and very helpful.  They even ran a tour below the minimum number of people so we wouldn’t miss out.  Not only did it mean we got a great personalized experience, but we also had an amazing guide too.

Wander around an indigenous market

If possible, make sure you plan to join this day trip from Quito on a Thursday or Sunday.  The Andean town of Saquisilí comes alive every Thursday with a huge indigenous market.  On Sundays, Pujili takes a turn.  After stopping for the included breakfast, this is the first real stop on the day trip and the most interesting.

Unlike the very popular Otavalo market, these markets are 100% local.  There are no stalls selling tourist goods and we were the only group of foreigners walking around.

These markets attract locals from the nearby Andean communities where they can buy just about anything and everything.   There is a section for grains, produce, housewares, flowers, meat…  We even witnessed an elderly local people in traditional wear dragging sheep up the road they had just purchased from the animal section!

Elderley indigenous couple dragging sheep home from the market in Ecuador.

We had an opportunity to wander around and take pictures.  Many indigenous people don’t like their photos to be taken so we had to be careful not to take portraits of locals.  Be sure to show respect and either take photos from a distance or ask permission before snapping any close-ups.

This is also a great opportunity to buy breakfast or some snacks for the road.  We bought some tortillas de maíz to try.  They cost just $1 for five and they were really tasty, despite being a little greasy.   Fruit and vegetable stands sell an amazing selection of fresh and delicious produce.

Just be careful – the prices are so cheap (and they are catering to local families) so one member of our group accidentally bought a giant bag of carrots for less than a dollar!

Large selection of grains laid out on the ground in a market in Ecuador.

Discover an indigenous house in the Andes

Back on the bus, the next stop is a traditional house where a local indigenous family live.  While this stop felt a little too ‘forced’ and tourist-driven, it was still really interesting to see how they live.

Andean families cut their houses into the hillside for wind protection and build a grass roof that reaches all the way to the ground.  This house included one small bed, a cage with a few birds that they use to collect eggs and a LOT of guinea pigs or, cuys , which are a delicacy here.  The guinea pigs were roaming free all over the small one-room house and the surrounding area.  I guess they know where the food is.

Laguna Quilotoa, Ecuador

Finally, we reached Quilotoa Crater Lake!  Due to the unique and high mineral content, this lake within the volcano’s caldera is a bright emerald colour.  Despite the cloud cover, it was stunning – we can only imagine how it looks in bright sunshine!

The tour gives you two hours to explore the area however you feel.  There is a lookout platform just as you reach the edge with a trail leading around the edge of the caldera and another heading straight down to the water’s edge.

The trail that loops the caldera is about 10km so, unless you are incredibly fit and basically run it, you’re not going to do it in two hours.  However, walking partway around will certainly give you some amazing views.

Man sitting on a bench looking at the emerald crater lake, Laguna Quilotoa, surrounded by mountains in Ecuador.

The trail down to the lake takes around 30 minutes.  At the bottom, there are kayaks to rent and a swing for pictures.  It seems everyone is trying to re-create the success of the Swing at the End of the World in Baños!  Keep in mind that the 30-minute walk down takes at least double that to hike back up.

It’s a steep trail anyway, but factor in the altitude and sandy ground that has you slipping back down with each step forward, and it’s a killer!  There are, however, mules that be rented for the return journey if you’re not sure you can make it.

Some of our group chose to walk around the top while others descended into the crater to lake level.  Two people actually made it around the entire circumference, but they had to run most of it.  We tried to do both, heading down first and hoping to make it back up with some time spare.

We hiked down and took in the views for a little while.  The climb up was much harder than either of us anticipated.  We were huffing and puffing in no time but made it back up with 20 minutes to spare.  We managed a short walk around the crater’s edge to see the views from above.

Enjoy a hot traditional Ecuadorian lunch

The bus takes everyone to a nearby restaurant for an included lunch which is well-deserved and thankfully hot.   We enjoyed hot soup, a main course, dessert and fresh juice.

Marvel at the size of Toachi Canyon

The ride back to Quito is broken up with one more stop at a canyon for a few quick pictures.  By this time for us, the clouds and rain had descended so the pictures don’t really show just how deep and impressive this canyon really is.

Cañon del Rio Toachi is long, wide and deep.  It’s really incredible to see in person.

You will be dropped off in the same location as the morning pick-up shortly after 6 pm.  It’s a long day but you’ll really feel like you saw a piece of the ‘real’ Ecuador.  The Quilotoa tour manages to combine the outdoor adventure of Cotopaxi or Mindo with the culture of Otavalo.  Of all the Quito day trips, Quilotoa seems to be the best combination of nature and culture.

Quick Tips for a Day Trip from Quito to Quilotoa

  • Try to book the tour for Thursday or Sunday to visit the market.
  • Check the tour company makes a stop at an indigenous market.
  • Pack layers.  It was cold at the crater, but we heated up with the climb.
  • Bring sunscreen and a hat.  If the sun is out, it is extremely strong at high altitudes.
  • Pack snacks.  It’s a long drive both ways with limited opportunities for purchasing food.
  • Bring small change.  The local family will be collecting tips, as well as the hot chocolate you will want after hiking Quilotoa.
  • Bring a change of clothes to leave on the bus.  If you get rained on, it’ll be a long drive back to town.
  • Bring a rain jacket, hat and gloves.  It will be noticeably colder than in Quito.

Can you visit Quilotoa Lake without a tour?

The simple answer is yes.  There are a few options to get to Quilotoa from Quito:

The best option as far as we are concerned is to hike the Quilotoa Loop.  This popular trail can be customized in a number of ways but generally speaking, it is a multi-day hike through various remote villages.  It usually starts in or near Latacunga and ends in Quilotoa, but can be done in reverse too.  This post details the more popular options.

If you don’t want to hike for days to see the lake, public transport options are available.  From Quitumbe bus station in the south of Quito, take a bus to Latacunga, then change for a bus to Quilotoa.  This is a great option if you want to spend at least one night and really have to explore the lake and hiking trails.  However, if you only have one day it really isn’t a great idea.  You’d simply be spending too much time sitting on, and transferring between, buses.

My Trip To Ecuador

Quilotoa: How We Visited The Most Beautiful Crater Lake

laguna de quilotoa tour

One of Ecuador’s best-kept secrets is Quilotoa crater lake located at 3900m altitude. Views that will absolutely take your breath away await those who are ready to go just a bit off the usual tourist route.

Quilotoa Lake view from the top

Laguna Quilotoa is a volcano that has collapsed in the western Ecuadorian Andes. The caldera lake offers breathtaking panoramic views and ethereal electric-blue water. This serene paradise offers travelers an opportunity to hike, kayak, or simply stare down at the water from the viewpoint. Even though it’s beautiful, be prepared for high altitudes! I would recommend taking ChlorOxygen 1-2 weeks ahead of the trip.

If you’re searching for a stunning photo opportunity to wow your friends on social media, Quilotoa is the perfect spot! We’ve visited Quilotoa lake during our Ecuador’s mainland journey . You can also check it in my video about the trip:

How to Get to Quilotoa, Ecuador

Going down to Quilotoa lake

Getting to Quilotoa By Bus

From lacatunga.

Most Quilotoa transit choices connect at Latacunga, and it’s a simple bus transfer. You may take a bus from Latacunga to Zumbahua, the nearest town to the lake. The bus costs $2 USD and takes around 2 hours, after which you must take a local bus or a pickup vehicle to the entrance.

Remember that the bus lines do not run often and that their schedule is subject to change. If you don’t want to risk having to spend the night, find out when the last bus leaves.

If your itinerary is flexible and you prefer to go by public transportation, consider spending the night in Quilotoa or Zumbahua.

There are no direct buses from Quito , thus most public transportation alternatives need you to stop or transfer to Latacunga. Buses leave from Quito’s Quitumbe station and are quite pleasant and simple to navigate.

Buses go frequently from Quito to Latacunga, usually every 10 minutes. The ride costs less than $3 USD and lasts around an hour. When you arrive at Latacunga, simply follow the directions above to get to the lake.

Getting to Quilotoa  By Car

Getting to Quilotoa lake by car

Many travelers rent a car to get to Quilotoa from Quito, Baños , or other Ecuadorian cities. The trip from Quito is just around 178 kilometers long, with much of it on the Pan-American Highway. The trip takes around 3 hours and there is plenty of parking near the attraction. This is how we got there, you can check the road in my video .

By Day Tours

Going down all the way to Quilotoa Lake

Most foreign travelers book a Quilotoa day trip . This is suggested to prevent difficult travel logistics and to make flexible stops along the way. The road up to Quilotoa goes through some of the most stunning Andean landscapes in the nation, including Tigua and Zumbahua, so picture breaks are essential. Most of the English-speaking tourists get this tour from Viator .

There are various day trips available from Quito with prices starting at $100-200 USD per person for the whole day. They frequently include hotel pickup and drop-off, as well as a nutritious breakfast and a full-day tour. Depending on the day of the week, the trip may also include a brief stop at a local market.

Take note that the tours frequently start around 6:30 a.m. and return around 7:00 p.m., so bring a lunch, snacks, and water because it may be a long day.

Things to Do in Quilotoa

Quilotoa loop.

Hiking sign at Quilotoa lake

Crater Lake in Quilotoa has popularized an experience known as the Quilotoa Loop. The loop takes visitors into the heart of Ecuador’s Quichua-speaking indigenous peoples and their everyday rituals, customs, and beliefs. The loop travels through various tiny Andean communities as well as the more well-known settlements of Quilotoa and Latacunga.

The crater lake’s turquoise waters are the most well-known site on the loop, but it also includes the Ilinizas Reserve (which features the Ilinizas Twin Peaks volcanos), stretches of cloud forest, and an up-close look at local artisans and indigenous markets that maintain the centuries-old culture.

The Quilotoa Loop is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stroll through ancient routes capped by glacier volcanoes, where many stories were created and much history was lost.

Hiking in Quilotoa

In front of Quilotoa crater lake

Hiking into Quilotoa crater is a rewarding experience. Visitors may trek all the way down to the lakeshore, stopping for several picture opportunities along the way. The descent takes only 20-30 minutes over steep, sandy terrain.

Remember that the ascent is significantly more difficult, especially at high altitudes! Most visitors leave in just an hour, but it’s not a race, so take your time.

For those who can’t tolerate the arduous upwards climb, locals rent mules for around $10.

People using mules to go all the way up to the top of the Quilotoa Lake, Ecuador

You can also hike all the way around the Quilotoa rim, however, this is not for the faint-hearted. The 7.5-mile loop winds up and down a narrow trail with difficult terrain. Hikers are exposed to the elements and near-vertical drops. The views are spectacular but don’t try it on a windy day.

Quilotoa Crater Lookout

Quilotoa Crater Lookout

Most visitors begin their journey at the crater overlook (mirador), and for good reason: the first glimpse of the lake will have you grabbing for your camera. There are several wooden viewing platforms offering breathtaking views of the crater and lagoon.

There is a beautiful overlook just near the parking lot, so you don’t have to trek to enjoy the magnificent views of the lake. Even if you intend to do one of the treks, make time for the viewpoint, which provides simply stunning views of the entire caldera that you won’t see anywhere else.

Plantlife & Bird Watching

Plants at Quilotoa crater lake

Quilotoa is an excellent example of a high paramo grassland landscape. Look for bright blooms such as purple Andean Lupins and orange Chuquirawa thistles, which are emblematic of the region.

Camping and Kayaking

Kayking in Quilotoa Lake, Ecuador

Kayking in Quilotoa Lake

Visitors may take boat rides out on the lake, and kayaks can be hired from the same little port.

Information stand on Quilotoa lake

A campground is also available in the little forested area inside the crater. It’s difficult to top the seclusion and breathtaking landscape but be prepared for cold evenings. We kayaked, the cost if $3 USD per 30 minutes and it was incredible experience.

Local Handicraft Shopping

Visitors will observe a lot of bird sounds inside the crater. Try to spot hummingbirds, doves, flower-piercers, ground tyrants, and finches, among other things.

Quilotoa features its own indoor crafts market, as well as other small stores along the street.

Handcrafted items at Quilotoa lake

Woolen knitwear is highly popular, particularly among travelers who have not prepared for the cold. There are also charming painted masks and fluffy guinea pig toys which are common in the area.

You will definitely enjoy shopping here since you can also bargain for lower prices.

Best Time to Visit Quilotoa

Many travelers come to the Quilotoa between June and September when the weather is drier and slightly warmer. The rainy season lasts from October to May, making your vacation more uncertain.

Despite the fact that it can be rainier, the off-season offers the advantage of much fewer tourists. Given the crowds on the path during peak season, this is something that you can consider. Since it frequently rains in the afternoon, early morning hikes are still feasible.

Remember that the weather in the Andes may change considerably throughout the year, so bring layers! The location is quite mild in terms of temperature, although the winds may be severe even in the summer.

Travel Tips When Visiting Quilotoa

Going to Quilotoa needs preparation so here are a few tips that I will share based on my experience:

  • Acclimatize before going to Quilotoa and trying out strenuous activities.
  • Be sure to pack proper clothing. Bring layers, scarves, wooly hats, and gloves.
  • Because the terrain in Quilotoa is sandy and uneven, it is advisable to bring reliable hiking shoes.
  • Quilotoa lodgings are basic, with little to no running water and modest food. Other settlements around the Quilotoa loop have more cozy and pleasant hostels such as Chugchilan and Isinlivi.
  • To capture the entire crater lake in one frame, photographers will need a wide-angle lens.
  • Bring snacks and drinking water with you. Although, there are also small shops in the area that sells basic food supplies.

The Quilotoa Crater Lake is one of South America’s most stunning natural wonders, and it’s only a short drive from Quito or Latacunga. There are several locations to explore, all of which may be adjusted depending on your budget and time.

The fact that it is off the main road adds to the adventure and allows you to enjoy it without crowds. We strongly recommend spending more than one day in this magnificent Ecuadorian region, especially if you love trekking.

About Quilotoa Lake in Ecuador

Located to the south-west of Quito, to the west of the city of Latacunga, is the stunning Quilotoa Lake (Laguna Quilotoa). Quilotoa is the westernmost volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes. It has a beautiful 3 km wide caldera lake which attracts visitors from all over the world. The crater was formed after a volcanic eruption in 1280. The volcano has been dormant ever since.

Quilotoa lake has a beautiful green and turquoise colour which comes from the dissolved volcanic minerals from its past eruptions. It is about 250 m deep, although the level of the lake has been slowly declining. The highest point along the crater is 3,914 m (12,841 ft), and the tiny town of Quilotoa is around 3,850 m (12,631 ft).

laguna de quilotoa tour

Depending on how long you spend in Ecuador and how much you enjoy hiking, you have the option to visit Quilotoa Lake as a day trip, multi-day trip or multi-day hike.

Day Trip to Quilotoa Lake

In case you don’t have too much time or you don’t fancy hiking a lot, then a day trip is the best option for you. There are multiple places you can take a day trip to Quilotoa Lake from.

Quito. The most popular place to visit Quilotoa Lake from is Quito, as it’s located about a 3 hour drive to the south-west of the capital. If you’re on a day trip from Quito, you’ll most likely only be able to do the hike down to the shore of the lagoon. Day-tours normally also include a few extra stops at viewpoints, markets and other places along the way. You can check out this day tour from Quito.

Baños. A less popular place to take a day trip to Quilotoa Lake from is Baños. The lagoon is located about the same distance from Baños as it is from Quito. We actually took a day trip from here, and ended up having a private tour. This was great because we could have slightly more control over the day and weren’t stuck in a big group. You can check out this day tour from Baños.

Multi-Day Trip or Hike to Quilotoa Lake

For those who enjoy hiking and would be able to fit a multi-day adventure into their Ecuador itinerary, a 2-3 day trip to Quilotoa Lake is perfect.

By planning on staying in the area for a few nights, you’ll get to experience this part of the country a bit more than you would on a day trip. During your multi-day adventure you can complete the Quilotoa Loop , which takes you through multiple remote villages, starting from Sigchos and finishing in Quilotoa. This is actually similar to what we did in the Sacred Valley in Peru.

If this multi-day hike sounds like a lot of effort then you can always just base yourself in Latacunga, explore the city, and then visit Quilotoa Lake from there. This is great if you can only allow for an overnight stay in the area before heading to other destinations such as Cotopaxi National Park or Baños. If you still want to do some hiking, then this itinerary is perfect for completing the Quilotoa Lake rim hike. We’ll go into a bit more detail on these hikes in the sections below.

Hikes Around Quilotoa Lake

There are a few different hikes you can complete around Quilotoa Lake, some of which we’ve already briefly mentioned above. You can check out our AllTrails map , which details three popular routes as follows:

  • Quilotoa Lake descent hike – red route;
  • Quilotoa Lake perimeter hike – green route; and
  • Quilotoa Loop – purple route.

1. Quilotoa Lake Descent Hike (A Popular Hike for Those on a Day Trip)

A popular hiking option for those visiting on a day trip is to hike down to the shore of the lake from Quilotoa village. It’s a 3.5 km (2.2 mi) out-and-back trail with about 350 m of elevation gain.

Don’t be fooled by the short length of this trail though. It is actually quite a challenging hike for a few reasons. Firstly, the trail is very steep and also slippery. If you have knee problems, you might struggle with the descent. Although, we did see some visitors walking down in small heels. I need to know their secret of how they don’t twist an ankle!

Of course, the way down is just one of the challenges. You’ll have to climb back up that same steep hill. Again, that’s not the easiest thing to do at around 3,800 m above sea level. If you think you would struggle with the uphill, you can always rent a mule to take you back up.

Once you’ve reached Playita you can just enjoy your surroundings or rent a kayak for a fun activity on the lake.

2. Quilotoa Lake Rim Hike (A Great Hike for Those on a Multi-Day Trip)

If you decide to do a DIY multi-day trip to Quilotoa Lake, then you’ll have the chance to hike along the crater’s rim. Since this trail is nearly 11 km (7 mi) long, you would need to dedicate most of the day to completing it.

You can stay in Latacunga and take a bus from there to Quilotoa village early in the morning. Depending on when you’re visiting, it’s always best to start your hike early, as clouds can roll in later on and you might end up hiking without any views.

The trail is very up and down and can be challenging for some. You’ll have gained around 550 m of elevation by the end.

3. Quilotoa Loop (The Best Multi-Day Self-Guided Hike in Ecuador)

The Quilotoa Loop is a well-known multi-day self-guided hike in Ecuador. The nearly 40 km (25 mi) long trek connects remote villages in the Andes such as Sigchos, Isinlivi, Chugchilan, and Quilotoa.

On average, hikers complete the Quilotoa Loop in about 3 days. You can always extend it by a day or two if you find the trek difficult. Or you can make it shorter by starting in Isinlivi. The trail will take you through valleys, along rivers, and up mountains and you can really enjoy the remoteness of being in the Ecuadorian countryside. You’ll be hiking between 2,800 m and 3,900 m and will have a lot of descents and ascents. At the end, your reward will be Quilotoa Lake, one of the most beautiful crater lakes in the country.

To get to the trailhead, you would first need to travel to Latacunga from where you can take a local bus to Sigchos. You can leave your big bag at your accommodation in Latacunga, as most hotels and hostels will offer this service at an affordable price. We had a similar arrangement when we hiked the Valbona Pass in the Albanian Alps. Then, once you’ve reached Quilotoa village, you can just take a local bus back to Latacunga.

Entry Fee to Quilotoa Lake

It’s worth noting that you will have to pay a $2 USD entry fee to the village of Quilotoa. If you’re on a tour, then this might be included in the price, but it’s worth confirming when you’re booking.

laguna de quilotoa tour

Where to Eat on Your Trip to Quilotoa Lake

If you’re visiting with a day-tour, then we highly recommend reading about what’s included in your package. Many tours will stop for breakfast en-route to Quilotoa, but this breakfast is hardly ever included in the price. More often than not you will only get lunch included, but it’s worth double checking before your trip.

If you’re on a multi-day adventure, then we recommend booking an accommodation with breakfast included. There are plenty of places to eat in Latacunga if you’re staying there to visit Quilotoa Lake. You can find a few local places offering food in the village of Quilotoa too.

If you’re hiking the Quilotoa Loop, then you can book accommodations that offer breakfast and dinner. In addition, you can usually also pay extra for the place to prepare you a packed lunch, so all three meals will be sorted for you. We recommend coming prepared with some additional healthy snacks that you can consume over the course of your multi-day hike though. In terms of drinking water, we recommend investing in a filtered water-bottle to reduce your plastic waste. You can buy bigger bottles of water in the small villages to cut down on using lots of small plastic bottles too.

laguna de quilotoa tour

Where to Stay on Your Trip to Quilotoa Lake

If you’re visiting on a day trip, then of course you’ll be back at your original destination by the evening. However, if you’re planning to do a multi-day trip, then you can base yourself in Latacunga .

For those wanting to complete the Quilotoa Loop, we recommend booking a night in the main villages along the trek. Most hikers spend the night before their first hiking day in Latacunga, which is easy to get to from Quito. It is a much bigger place, which means you’ll have more options to eat and buy snacks for the upcoming hike. You can always store your luggage here and then pick it up when you return from Quilotoa. Then you can spend the next few nights in Isinlivi , Chugchilan and Quilotoa .

laguna de quilotoa tour

How To Avoid Altitude Sickness at Quilotoa Lake

Whether you’re just visiting with a day-tour or completing the Quilotoa Loop, you’ll be at high altitude. If you’re planning on taking a day-trip from Quito, we recommend spending a few days there to acclimatise before visiting Quilotoa Lake.

To be honest, if you spend a few days in Quito , which is already at 2,800 m (9,186 ft) above sea level, then you’ll most likely be fine.

If you want to hike the Quilotoa Loop, then we suggest visiting places such as the TeleferiQo in Quito or Cotopaxi National Park first, to get used to being way above 3,500 m (11,482 ft).

Final Thoughts on a Trip to Quilotoa Lake in Ecuador

Whilst we would’ve loved to visit Quilotoa Lake on a multi-day adventure, we’re still happy that we decided to visit on a day trip from Baños. The lake was just as beautiful as we’d seen it on photos beforehand, so overall it was totally worth the long time spent in the car to get there. Having a private tour gave us the chance to have a bit more control over the day, but also to get to know our guides and learn a bit more about Ecuador.

Have you ever visited Quilotoa Lake in Ecuador? If you did, did you take a day trip or multi-day trip to Quilotoa Lake? If not, would you visit this beautiful crater lake in Ecuador? Let us know in the comments below.

The Breathtaking Quilotoa Loop in 3 Days | One of the Best Hikes in Ecuador

While backpacking through Ecuador, you will hear travelers talking about the popular multi-day trek filled with beauty and culture, the Quilotoa Loop. The Laguna de Quilotoa is a striking crater lake found in Ecuador’s Cotopaxi Province in the famed “Avenues of Volcanoes.” This incredible stretch of land between Quito and Cuenca is the heart of the Ecuadorian Highlands and includes a shockingly vast quantity of both active and dormant volcanoes.

The Quilotoa loop trek offers a chance to appreciate the Andes Mountains in all of their majestic glory.

While many visitors opt to visit Quilotoa Lake as a day trip from Quito, those seeking an intimate cultural experience in spectacular nature will love hiking the Quilotoa Loop. The multi-day hike includes overnight stops in small communities and twists through the Los Illinizas Nature Reserve in the heart of the mystical Andes Mountains.

The Quilotoa Loop trek is adventurous and is often praised as one of the best treks in Ecuador.

This complete Quilotoa Loop trekking guide follows the “standard route.” This is the typical route that moves from north to south, starting from the village of Sigchos and ending at the stunning Quilotoa Crater Lake.

Below, find a Quilotoa hike map, helpful travel tips, a day-by-day Quilotoa loop trekking itinerary in 3 days, and how much to budget for the Quilotoa Loop 3 day hike.

  • Mileage: +/- 24 miles | There are different trail options along the route
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Trail Markers:  The trail is fairly well marked with wooden red and yellow signboards along the route. Sometimes the paths aren’t marked, so an offline Quilotoa Loop map is essential. Maps.me has all of the trail options for hiking Quilotoa Loop .
  • No camping gear is necessary for trekking the Quilotoa Loop
  • Sigchos sits at an elevation of 9,437 ft. (2,876 m) and steadily climbs up to Quilotoa Village at an elevation of 12,680 ft. (3,865 m).
  • With ups and downs along the trail, I tracked a total ascent of around 8,038 ft (2450 m) along the Quilotoa trek.

➯ Hey… don’t forget your Travel Insurance! I love SafetyWing

The truth is that you don’t need too much trekking gear for the Quilotoa Loop hike. While there are camping options, I think part of the charm of this multi-day trek is staying at the local guesthouses along the way.

The guesthouses on the Quilotoa Loop provide everything you need from sheets and towels, to trail updates, paper Quilotoa Loop maps, and delicious meals. Many accommodations provide wooden stoves in the room for chilly nights.

me hiking quilotoa loop, cascade Gualligua, waterfall, woman

The lighter your backpack, the better. Most Quilotoa Loop guesthouses average $15 – $20 per night per person and include meals (breakfast and dinner).

That being said, you’ll need some hiking essentials, like good hiking boots with ankle support. It’s even better if the hiking boots are water-resistant. I swear by always wearing Merino Wool socks with hiking boots.

The trails can be muddy and steep, so hiking poles can provide some relief. Any backpack around 36 L is ideal . I carried my trusty Osprey Kyte 36L, which has been recently changed to a 38 L backpack now.

I always carry a refillable Water Bottle to cut down on unnecessary plastic waste. The guesthouses provide fresh drinking water, but if you drink a lot you may want to bring a water filter . For me, I never used the water filter when hiking the Quilotoa Loop trek, and sufficed with refills at the guesthouse.

Wear layered clothing, preferably long sleeves and hiking pants for sun protection and from bushy overgrowth. I brought a baseball cap and wore a Buff to help protect me from the strong Andes sun.

Natural Sunscreen and Bug Spray are also useful.

All you’ll need are small toiletries for showering, as towels are typically provided by the guesthouses. You may wish to bring a swimsuit, especially if you planning on staying in guesthouses with hot tubs and saunas. Yes, there are little luxuries along the Quilotoa Loop trek!

A lightweight rain jacket is nice. At night make sure to have warm clothing (keep them dry) for night. The nights are chilly and I utilized a wool hat and mittens.

I never leave for any trek without a well-stocked first aid kit and at least one emergency blanket .

I did use an offline map quite a bit, actually more than I thought. Make sure to carry a power bank and all the correct chargers. Pick up the paper Quilotoa Loop Map each night from the guesthouse.

If you have space in your bag it’s best to bring something to help pass the time at night like a journal or a book or Kindle, and maybe even a tablet, and all the essential chargers.

Most Hikers Start the Quilotoa Trek in Latacunga Ecuador

Latacunga is a fairly large city and hub in the Ecuador Highlands. This is the most common starting point for those looking to hike the Quilotoa Loop. While not exactly a picturesque city, Latacunga does have a large local market, a busy main bus terminal, and is a central hub for Ecuador’s Volcano Alley.

There are also plenty of restaurants, artisan shops, and places to stock up on last-minute supplies for the trek. At night, locals enjoy strolling the large plaza that is filled with street food vendors and activities.

You will have to carry enough cash for the entire trek since there are no ATMs on the Quilotoa Loop trek. Latacunga is the last place to stock up on cash for the next 3 days.

How to Get to Latacunga Ecuador

Latacunga is around 2 hours from Ecuador’s capital city of Quito. Most travelers move south from Quito’s Quitumbe Terminal to explore the nearby reserves, including Cotopaxi National Park.

🚌 Quito to Latacunga Buses  |  Buses Depart:  frequently from Terminal Terrestre Quitumbe  |  Average Bus Fare:  $3 USD |  Duration : 2 hours | Depending on what bus company, you may be dropped on the main highway where you will have to bargain with taxi’s for a ride into town (I couldn’t get lower than $4 for the 2-minute ride)

Alternatively, from the South, most travelers will come from Riobamba, or as far away as Cuenca . Be mindful that the bus ride from Cuenca to Latacunga takes at least 8 hours, so a night bus may be optimal.

🚌 Riobamba to Latacunga Ecuador  |  Bus Company: Chimborazo  |  Average One-Way ticket:  $4  |  Duration : 2 hours

Where to Sleep in Latacunga Ecuador

The hostel La Posada Hostel del Viajero is a no-frills hostel with private or shared rooms. All rooms have private bathrooms and they stow extra luggage for free for hikers.

The owner, Victor, is a former guide and is happy to answer any questions about hiking the Quilotoa loop and even offers to reserve guesthouses along the route for free. Victor speaks excellent English and has tons of useful information for the entire Cotopaxi region and surrounding hikes.

Two more popular hostels in Latacunga for backpackers are Hostal Central which recently stows bags for free and Hostal Café Tiana which stows luggage for $1 a day.

Hiking Quilotoa Loop Standard Route vs. Reverse Route

Sigchos Ecuador, villge, trailhead quilotoa loop, car, mountain, hardware store

There are multiple ways to hike to Ecuador’s top attraction, but most plan for 3 days. The standard trek route is from North to South and begins in the village of Sigchos and ends in Quilotoa Village.

Alternatively, the “reverse route” is hiked from the Quilotoa Crater Lake to Sigchos.

Some say that the reverse route is easier since it starts at the Quilotoa Crater Lake which has a staggering elevation of 12,841 ft. The trail ends in Sigchos which has a significantly lower elevation of 9,265 ft. However, the trail ascents and descents day by day, so there really isn’t a very notable difference.

The standard route finishes at the Quilotoa Crater, so makes for a superb finale.

Whichever route way you choose, you will enjoy the Quilotoa loop trek.

When to Hike the Quilotoa Loop & Altitude Tips

quilotoa loop hike, hiking quilotoa loop in january, rio toachi, river valley, sigchos to isinlivi, grass, clouds, sky

The Quilotoa Loop can be hiked any time of the year; however, keep in mind that the Ecuador Highlands have two very distinctive seasons, dry and rainy . In general,  the dry season is from April to October , while the rainy season is from November until March .

However, the Ecuador Highlands can have less rain in the months of December and January.

Remember, at these high altitudes, the weather is wild, volatile, and can change in an instant .

During the dry season, there is less rain, but the nights are cooler than the rainy season. With the rainy season comes the vivid green coloring, but also muddy trails and higher possibilities of mudslides and rock slides.

The hiking paths along the Quilotoa Loop are a mixture of gravel roads, dirt, and grass paths. Most mornings start out clear, but since it’s in a cloud forest, the clouds almost always roll in around noon.

💬 Personal Experience | I hiked the Quilotoa Loop in January and had beautiful weather up until 14:00 every day. Some days it was just cloudy in the afternoons, while other days there were brief and light rain showers.

The lowest elevation of the Quilotoa trek is around 8,300 ft, so it’s best to be properly acclimated to the elevation. If you’re already in Ecuador, that should be no problem, unless coming directly from the coast or the Galapagos Islands.

Drinking coca leaf tea or guayusa tea can help alleviate altitude sickness.

For reference, here are the Quilotoa Loop elevations of popular sleeping villages along the trek.

Isinlivi Elevation: 9,655 ft (2,943 m)  |  Chugchilan Elevation: 10,500 ft. (3,200 m)  |  Quilotoa Elevation (village): 12,680 ft. (3,865 m)

Quilotoa Loop Tour vs. Independent Hiking Quilotoa Loop

Laguna Quilotoa, llama, quilotoa ecudaor, mountains, hiking quilotoa loop, clouds, sky, grass, alley of volcanos, trail

There are many guided Quilotoa Loop tours, yet many visitors opt to hike the loop on their own.

This is one of the most popular treks in Ecuador and many hikers walk the trails daily. Since most sleep in guesthouses along the route, it’s easy to talk with fellow hikers, get up-to-date trail information, and find new hiking buddies along the way.

Each guesthouse also provides a hand-drawn map plus all of the trail options are clearly marked on Maps.me. There are signboards along the way. However, it’s still possible to deviate from the trail. (As you can see I had a few short missteps).

If you have basic hiking skills, can follow an offline hiking map, and aren’t worried about time, you will have no problems hiking the Quilotoa Loop without a tour. On the contrary, local guides are easy to find in the villages or can be arranged in Latacunga. Always do what feels best for you.

Quilotoa Loop Tours

If looking to organize a trekking Quilotoa Loop Tour before arrival, there are some 3-day treks from Quito and condensed 2-day treks .

The Quilotoa Lake can be visited without a trek as a full-day trip from Quito , too.

Safety Tips for Quilotoa Loop Ecuador

sigchos to isinlivi, cows, grass path, hiking quilotoa loop, path to isinlivi, trees

The Quilotoa Loop hike is generally safe.

Guesthouses will steer you away from any hazards like rocks or mudslides that happen along the trail. The communities are warm and inviting and have their own set of laws, so I never felt unsafe walking the loop alone. With that being said, the Andes Mountains are unpredictable and should always be respected and never underestimated.

Sometimes the dogs can be territorial and seem aggressive. If you reach down to “grab a stone” they usually run away. Some people prefer carrying hiking poles or a stick just to help shield themselves from hostile dogs.

Day 1 Quilotoa Loop Trek | Sigchos to Isinlivi

Most hikers will depart from Latacunga early in the morning for Sigchos. There’s an excellent local market to grab some last-minute snacks near the bus station before departing for the trek. The bus takes two hours, so sit back and enjoy the beauty of the mountains.

For timing logistics, it’s best to depart Latacunga before 10:00.

In Sigchos, walk past the main plaza towards the outskirts of town where the Saturday Animal Market takes place. Hikers should take the road to the right and follow the signs to Isinlivi. This beautiful part of the trail descends down to a small chapel, Nuestra Senora del Cisne.

Make sure to check in with an offline Quilotoa Loop map, since there are small paths that lead to private property. After the church, you will need to veer onto a grass path. You can see that I followed the road and ended up with some unhappy dogs in front of someone’s home.

At the end of the grass path is a gravel road that leads to a divergent trail to the Gualligua Waterfall.

Cascade de Gualligua

The Cascade Gualligua is just a short path (600 m) that leads to a small waterfall. It’s not a must-see waterfall in Ecuador, but makes for a great place to cool off on a hot afternoon.

There is a bench at the signboard in case you opt for a rest. The waterfall is a tranquil space to drink some water and grab a snack.

After the waterfall, continue back on the main path to the town of Isinlivi. The trail is to the left after a house and is marked with a signboard. There is a concrete bridge to cross the Toachi River.

After the river crossing, the path begins a steeper ascent to Isinlivi. There are fabulous views of the canyon below.

The path merges onto a gravel road that leads to Isinlivi. Take a right down the grass path that starts before the town’s “bus stop.” The bus stop is simply a bench.

This grassy trail leads to Isinlivi and is quicker and more scenic.

Isinliví Village

The picturesque village of Isinliví is snugly nestled into the mountains and boasts a few nearby mirador trails, a skilled woodwork artisan, and a small church. It’s quiet, but that’s where the real charm lies.

Before getting too comfortable in your guesthouse, make sure to walk the streets and climb up to the short mirador path.

Isinlivi town is always a favorite among hikers on the Quilotoa Loop. It may be because of the Llullu Llama Mountain Lodge . This popular guesthouse boasts a hot tub, outdoor space, and a cozy lodge interior.

Another popular guesthouse is Hostal Taita Cristobal . This cozy family-run lodge has a lovely garden, green space, and on-site llamas. The food is delicious and they make fresh tea at night from the garden.

☛ Remember, along the Quilotoa hike route, most accommodations include a bed, dinner, breakfast, and free drinking water

  • I hiked to the waterfall, took lots of photos, and only got off the path once… 🙂
  • My arrival time in Isinlivi was at 14:00, so my hiking time for the day was 3.5 hours.
  • Isinlivi is super cute, so I walked to the mirador and visited the church.

After a hearty breakfast begin on the trail to Chugchilan.

Shortly after leaving Isinlivi, there will be a bridge, however, don’t cross it. Rather, take the “sendero,” or small path to the right. Refer to the Quilotoal Loop map, you can see at first, I crossed the bridge, but glad I redirected.

This scenic trail can be muddy, especially during the rainy season but twists through the beautiful canyon with some of my favorite views along the Quilotoa Loop.

Walk next to the beautiful Toachi River. The trail opens into a pasture and you will need to hop over a broken cattle gate. After that, look for a wooden tree bridge. Cross it to reach a gravel path.

In Chinalo is a signboard that points to Chugchilan Village. Unfortunately, it meets up with a paved road that leads to Chugchilan.

Be aware that there was a landslide that rerouted the path right before the road near Chugchilan. The path leads through someone’s garden in which they ask for a donation for path maintenance with an honesty box.

The first marker of the village is the famous Black Sheep Inn. Other hostels are closer to the center across from the small cemetery.

Chugchilan Village

Chugchilan Village is a popular base for hikers looking simply to take day trips to nearby places, including a day hike to Laguna de Quilotoa. There is a famous cheese factory, Quesería San Miguelito that can be toured and there are lots of trails for horseback riding.

Where to Sleep in Chugchilan

Hostal Cloud Forest is known for their hearty plates of home-cooked food, central location, and for marking the Quilotoa Loop trail with signboards. They offer shared and private rooms and have fireplaces in the rooms that they light at night.

Hostal el Vaquero is located outside of the village, closer in the direction of Laguna de Quilotoa, and has beautiful green spaces and boasts its own sauna.

The Black Sheep Inn has luxury mountain huts with award-winning vegetarian meals, This is THE place to stay if you are sleeping for a few nights in Chugchilan. They have an all-day coffee and tea bar with delicious pastries. There are shared room options for $20 a night.

  • Distance:   8 miles
  • Duration:   +/- 4 – 5 hours
  • Personal Schedule & Notes:
  • I left Isinlivi at 8:30 with a to-go lunch. The lunch on day 2 was worth it!
  • I enjoyed my picnic lunch at the Mirador Cañon del Toachi and walked into Chugchilan at 12:45, so I hiked for just over 4 hours for the day.
  • The paved road into Chugchilan was my least favorite part of the Quilotoa Lake hike.
  • Stop by Cafeteria Paquita to enjoy a pricey, but indulgent microbrew from the Golden Prague in Cuenca

Day 3 Quilotoa Loop Trek | Chugchilan to Quilotoa Crater Lake

On the final day of the Quilotoal Loop hike, there are two paths that lead to Quilotoa Lake.

The standard route that most hikers take passes through La Moya Baja and La Moya Alta.

Alternatively, there’s a quicker, but more steep “adventure route” that follows the outskirts of Guayama San Pedro community. Check in the hostels before departure, as sometimes the adventure route can be closed due to mudslides.

⁉️ It appears there was a recent landslide and the second bridge on the adventure route has been destroyed. While it can be passable, it requires careful navigation and proper gear. Always use your discretion and take any chances on dangerous paths.

Adventure Route

horse, dog, signboard, adventure route quilotoa hike, people, tree, grass, path

After the small community of Sigue, there will be a signboard that is marked as the “Adventure Route.” The grassy trail to the left begins the adventure route, otherwise, keep following the road straight to reach La Moya Baja.

Cross the the Sigue River via a rickety wooden bridge. There are plenty of markers for Quilotoa Lake. There is another makeshift bridge further up.

The second bridge is susceptible to being destroyed and unusable due to mud and rockslides. This bridge has been lost to a rockslide as of the summer of 2023.

From a reader (thanks Shaun), they suggest following the longer route on maps.me to Guyama Grande community. There is a trail to the right that ascends to the lake. This path merges with the Crater Lake viewpoint and takes a little over 4 hours.

Viewpoint & Guayama San Pedro

There’s an excellent viewpoint of the canyon below before arriving in Guayama San Pedro. Walk along the outskirts of town and follow the gravel path up.

This is a fairly large ascent but you can follow a few switchbacks to help speed up the process.

Finally, you will be rewarded with those first magical glimpses of Laguna Quilotoa.

First Quilotoa Mirador

There is a Quilotoa Mirador and observation deck right below a wooden snack bar. It’s free to enjoy the space.

Afterward, there are two paths a lower loop trail and a higher Quilotoa loop rim trail. Both trails are marked on maps.me, but STAY on the higher and more trekked path to avoid potential problems with the locals.

☛ Travel Tip | The “lower trail” is meant for livestock, so even though it’s marked on Maps.me and I took it for a bit, it’s best not to use this trail. I had an unpleasant encounter on the lower path, not unsafe just more of a nuisance

Quilotoa Village

Quilotoa Mirador, laguna quilotoa, quilotoa crater lake, Quilotoa village

Follow along the crater lake to the right on the higher Quilotoa Loop trail. This trek ends at the final Quilotoa Mirador which is across from Hostería Chukirawa .

There is an entrance fee to access the Quilotoa Community.

Quilotoa Community Entrance Fee: $2 USD, pay it upon exit or pay an authorized seller… they will give you a ticket

There are lots of restaurants and artisan shops here to browse. Some opt to sleep in Quilotoa for the night and hike the whole Quilotoa crater rim the following day or hop on a boat tour at the lake and maybe even rent a kayak.

The Quilotoa crater rim hike is also a popular day trip from Quito , so it can be busier than the previous hiking days, especially on the weekend.

The Quilotoa hotels and guesthouses are a little more expensive here since Laguna Quilotoa is one of Ecuador’s top attractions. If you want another day of hiking, sleep in Quilotoa and hike the following day to Zumbahua village. Zumbahua has even more frequent buses back to Latacunga.

  • I always opt for the “adventure route” when hiking, so I followed the left trail that passes through Guayama San Pedro.
  • I left at 8:45 from the hostel with a sandwich to go. I arrived at the first mirador at 11:30 (around 3 hours) and hung out quite a bit there since I had great weather.
  • The remaining section of the Quilotoa crater rim walk to Quilotoa village doesn’t take long.
  • I arrived at the final Quilotoa Mirador in the village at 13:15.

Total Cost of 3-Day Quilotoa Loop Hike

So how much does it cost to hike the Quilotoa Loop in 3 days and 2 nights?

It cost me $58.65 to hike the Quilotoa Loop trek in 3 days

Due to COVID, the trails and guesthouses were pretty much empty. I tried to purchase small things in each village, whether it was a man selling bracelets or a girl selling fresh fruit. These small villages en route which were once used to seeing hundreds of hikers per day pass through their communities are now seeing less than 20 visitors each day.

Most organized tours cost around $500 for 3 days, but if you seek a local guide in Quilotoa or Sigchos, it costs much less and the money stays within the communities.

Wow, this looks incredible. I’ve heard great things about Ecuador and this just makes me want to go even more. I love multi day hikes but I like the sound of the guest houses instead of camping. Way more comfortable and less gear to carry

Thanks Emma! Yes it’s super nice and offers an excellent cultural experience as well. The food is worth the trek itself. 😊

The scenery is incredible! The waters of the crater lake is just a magical shade of blue. And everywhere on the trail is so lush. We’d love to visit Ecuador someday.

Thank you! It is a very beautiful hike and the journey is just as incredible as the Crater Lake. Hope you can make it to Ecuador in the future, it’s such an underrated destination.💚

The Toachi Canyon picture was just amazing! Love all the details, and even the exact price breakdown of the hike. Costs are so reasonable for such beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Erin! Yes, for three days it’s a very reasonable price ❤️

I’ve heard of this hike and was going to do it early 2020, but then Covid happened and I didn’t make it to Ecuador. I didn’t realize you can do a 3 day hike, but I will definitely do it one day—everything about it looks amazing! This is such a great in-depth guide. Thanks for sharing it! 🙂

Thanks Natalie! That is what is great about hiking Quilotoa Loop, there are many trail options to tailor to any itinerary. Hope you can make it to Ecuador in the near future 🇪🇨

WoW! That water looks like a sheet of jade. It takes my breath away. I want to be hiking here!

Thanks Terri! It’s a great reward after a three day hike! Although, the journey itself is where I found the most magic ✨

Finding your blog so helpful as I plan my trip to Ecuador. Will definitely be doing this hike. Thanks very much <3

Thanks Lottie! Enjoy! It’s a spectacular trek in Ecuador 🥾

I hate to be that guy, but I want to hike the loop and need general internet availability. Do you remember how much service you had? Can I count on finding pockets of service every couple of hours?

Unfortunately I didn’t take my laptop with me, but I do remember connecting my phone to some Wi-fi points at the hostels. Some places didn’t accept cards, so they might not have Wi-fi.

Just remember that the weather can change in the mountains and there are afternoon clouds and storms, which can also affect the connection.

There are two pretty modern hostels, The Black Sheep Inn in Chugchilán and the LluLlu Llama Mountain Lodge in Isinlivi. Those may be two places to check in and who could be more help.

It’s a great hike, so hope you can enjoy it!

Thank you Megs. Very helpful. I’m in Tena right now, heading to Banos tomorrow, then Latacunga early next week. Aways good to get advice from people who have actually done the hike. Cheers!

Enjoy the trek! I really did love it, and it was pretty quiet when I hiked it. I love the experiences of the almost house-like stays in the small communities.

Safe travels ⛰

Hi. Just done the trek and found your guide very useful. For day 2 there is an alternative route from Itualó that joins the main road into Chugchilan much later if you don’t want to walk along the main road. I went your route however and agree, the mirador is a great place for lunch, and the road whilst not much fun isn’t busy On the last day the second bridge you mention has been taken out by a rock slide. It’s marked on maps.me as danger, path broken. You can get by, by scrambling over the stones but good foot ware is required. However there is a third route. Follow the longer route on maps.me to Guyama Grande but then turn right and head straight to the lake. The path is marked on the map but maps.me doesn’t suggest it for some reason. We went along it and it was fine and from Chugchilan to the view point of the lake took us just over 4 hours.

Thank you so much for the feedback and update Shaun. I’ll go in and update this week. 🙏

Have they pulled all the signage for the adventure route due to the landslide and broken bridge? I wonder if they will permanently close the alternative route?

Happy Trails,

Hi Megan, no, the sign off to the left of the road for the adventure route is still there. As I say it’s passable but with care 😊

Hi Megan, Thanks a lot for this wonderful guide! I am planning to do this route in March next year – hoping the weather is not too bad. Do you think it’s not a good idea? Also, I wonder if it is necessary to book the guest houses in advance? Thanks for your help! Best, Sofie

Thanks for reaching out. I’m not sure about the weather in March, it seems as if the weather across the globe has unfortunately been fluctuating quite a bit. In January, I had great weather, but in the mountains the weather can always change fast. It’s best to pack in layers with good rain gear and warm clothes for at night. There are always local guides in the villages if you are concerned about the weather and almost always other hikers on the trail.

As for booking in advance, I would suggest doing what you feel most comfortable with. There are plenty of places along the way and many of them are on booking.com. Most hikers follow the same path through all the villages, so it doesn’t hurt to book in advance, especially if a certain place calls to you.

Happy Hiking,

Hi Megan, Just to say thank you for your post and the map which I downloaded into Maps.me. I didn’t try the adventure route on day 3 (signs still there but hostel owner pointed out the non-adventure route which still held enough adventure for me!). At the end of the second day the path is re-routed through someone’s garden (just before you join with the road near Chugchilan) due to a landslide in 2022. The owners ask for a donation for path maintenance (with an honesty box). All hostels now seem to have good wifi (with the exception of the programme of rolling power cuts in Ecuador at the moment)

Hey Rachel-

Thanks so much for taking the time for reaching out about this important update! It seems like the path will constantly be changing with the landscape. I will add this update to the post.

Hi Megs, I finished my first day of the trek and your blog has been incredible! Thank you for the detailed descriptions! I’m looking forward to day 2 and the wonderful journey!

Thanks so much Cyndi! Glad that the hiking guide has been useful for you!

Hi Megs! I’m planning to do this trek in Nov., fingers crossed that 2024 Nov won’t be the wettest Nov ever 😁 Couple of questions, hopefully you can help- someone mentioned tickets/fee for the loop, is that right? 🤔 don’t think I read that anywhere on your blog… Also, will our phones work thru out the trip (data) or Shd I take my satellite device (we are 3 gals)??? Thanks 😊

You will love the Quilotoa Loop. I hiked in January and it was so green. I started early in the mornings and it usually started raining by the afternoon.

There is a fee to access the community of Quilotoa. The fee is $2. You may be approached near the lake or on the way out because an official community member will ask for a ticket. As I was leaving for the bus stop I was asked at the gate for my ticket and paid the $2 fee to the community. Make sure you hold onto your ticket as you will be asked for it within the community.

As for the trek, there is no official fee per se. Some readers have informed me that due to landslides some of the routes now pass through a local’s land and they have set up a donation box before Chugchilan.

The Quilotoa Loop hike is quite popular, so you will see other hikers. There were some sections of the trail where I didn’t have service, but I did not carry a satellite device. I did have an offline map, but if you feel more comfortable with a satellite device, there is no harm in carrying one. I have heard that the internet in the guesthouses in each village has also drastically improved.

Hope this helps and enjoy your trek! 🥾

An Outlandish Guide to the Quilotoa Loop | Ecuador

A Guide to Hiking the Quilotoa Loop

Just when you’re sweating, sunburned, and too short of breath on your Quilotoa Loop trek, you will wind up at a summit like you’ve never seen before. Who needs a peak when you can end up at a crater lake?

Inside the 3km wide caldera is a lake, brilliant green with minerals. The crater rim climbs to 3,915 meters at its highest point, but when the clouds roll in and swallow the sides of the caldera, it is just you and the lake below (and probably llama or two). And after a few days of hiking, Laguna Quilotoa is nothing short of a spectacular finish.

Trekking the Quilotoa Loop  is easily one of the most memorable things to do in Ecuador . It’s a relatively easy introduction to trekking in South America with comfy bed & breakfasts along the way and routes as short as two days. You will  get lost, but the opportunity to explore the rarely visited parts of Ecuador is well worth it.

Think you are up for the challenge? Here’s our guide for trekking the Quilotoa Loop, complete with suggested routes, where to stay , how to get from Quito to Quilotoa, and more.

At a Glance

The Quilotoa Loop is some 200km of Andean trails near  Volcan Cotopaxi . The route is highly customizable (see suggested routes below), but “The Quilotoa Loop” most often refers to a four-day trek between Sigchos and Quilotoa.

Trekking the Quilotoa Loop

Quilotoa Loop Routes

While you can visit Laguna de Quilotoa on a day trip from Quito ( $70 ), you’ll get the most from the experience if you hike the Quiltoa Loop.

Wondering which route to take? The hike may be easier starting Quilotoa (clockwise), but it’s more rewarding to start in Insinliví or Sigchos finish at Laguna de Quilotoa (counterclockwise). Below you’ll find hiking instructions of the four most popular routes.

Important Note:  The Quilotoa Loop isn’t very well marked, so be sure to get a Quilotoa Loop map with distances and landmarks. I also recommend asking for directions from other hikers and locals as often as possible! The hotel staff on the Loop are also a great resource! Most staff should be able to answer questions about your hiking route and give you a detailed map.

Quilotoa Loop

The Easy Way | Quilotoa > Chugchilan | 2 Days

Start Day 1 by catching the direct bus from Latacunga to Quilotoa (2 hours) or the bus from Latacunga to Zumbahua (1 hour) and a collectivo from Zumbahua to Quilotoa (1 hour).

Quilotoa Loop Routes

The Popular Route |  Sigchos > Isinliví > Chugchilan > Quilotoa | 4 Days

Day 1 begins by taking the bus from Latacunga to Sigchos (2 hours). On day Day 2 , trek the mostly easy uphill from Sigchos to Insinliví (3-4 hours). The hike will alternate between trail and paved roads.

Start off Day 3 following the stream from Insinliví, cross the river, take the steep climb on your right, and follow a paved road left the rest of the way to Chugchilan (4-6 hours). And on Day 4 , dip onto a valley and climb back up the other side. Pass through a few small towns, then take the zig-zagging road up the side of Laguna de Quilotoa (5-6 hours). Finish with a walk along the upper or inner rim of the crater (1-4 hours).

Catch a bus or collectivo back to Latacunga, or stay the night and head out early the next morning.

The Reverse Route | Quilotoa > Chugchilan > Insinliví > Sigchos | 5 Days

On Day 1 , catch the direct bus from Latacunga to Quilotoa (2 hours). You can also catch the bus from Latacunga to Zumbahua (1 hour) and a collectivo from Zumbahua to Quilotoa (1 hour). You can start Day 2 with a trek around the rim of Quilotoa Lake, and hike mostly downhill from Quilotoa to Chugchilan with a steep finish (3-4 hours).

Day 3 is a mostly flat and downhill hike to Insinliví with a steep incline at the end (3-4 hours). And on Day 4 , just make the easy descent from Insinliví to Sigchos between trail and paved roads (3-4 hours).

Llamas in Insinliví

The Full Loop | Isinliví > Malingua Pamba > Quilotoa > Chucgilan > Isinliví|  6 Days

Day 1 starts with catching the bus from Latacunga to Insinliví (via Sigchos). On Day 2 , depart Insinliví towards Malinga Pamba (3 to 4 hours). There are no hotels here, so you’ll stay in an indigenous home for the night.

Day 3 is the hike from Malingua Pamba to Quilotoa (4 to 5 hours) where you’ll stay the night. On Day 4 , trek around the rim of Quilotoa Lake, and hike mostly downhill from Quilotoa to Chugchilan (3-4 hours). And Day 5 , you’ll hike the mostly flat and downhill path from Chugchilan to Insinliví with a steep incline at the end (3-4 hours.

On your final day, Day 6 , catch the early morning bus from   Isinliví to Latacunga (3-4 hours).

How to Get to Quilotoa

Quito to Latacunga:  Most treks on the Quilotoa Loop will begin from Latacunga , a city two hours south of Quito. From Latacunga, there are regular buses or camionetas on to Insinliví, Sigchos, Chugchilan, and Quilotoa.

Quito to Quilotoa:  At the time of writing, La Illinizas is the only company offering direct departures to Quilotoa ($3). Their busses depart daily at 5pm. Another option for getting from Quito to Quilotoa is to catch the bus from Quito to Latacunga ($1.50), then hire a camioneta ($30/car) for the remaining trip to Quilotoa. Day trips to Quilotoa should also include round-trip, direct transfer ( $70 ).

Collectivo from Quilotoa to Latacunga

Where to Stay on the Quilotoa Loop

The hotels along the Quilotoa Loop are some of the best in all of Ecuador. Latacunga, Sigchos, Isinliví, Chugchilan, and Quilotoa all have a small selection of hostels, hotels, bed & breakfasts, and campsites where you can stay the night.

Camping on the Quilotoa Loop is also quite easy since most hotels also have campsites. It’s common for hotels to offer board, which includes a surprisingly delicious homemade dinner and hearty breakfast for about $15. You can buy snacks, drinks, and bagged lunch for around $6 more, but you can save money by buying your lunch or hiking snacks in Latacunga.

Typically, hikers will leave their main luggage at a hotel in Latacunga. In 2017, Hostal Café Tiana ( $12 ) would hang onto guest luggage for $1/day. Luggage is stored in a secure room with cameras, and there’s also a small locker where you can stash valuables.

I’ve been looking for information on camping through the loop but not finding anything. Does the difficulty of the hike make it challenging to bring a large pack with hiking gear? Thanks!

Congrats for this useful post, great job. Maybe you can help me.

I am planning to visit Ecuador in Aug. 2018 and I want to spend some time at Quilotoa Loop and Cotopaxi.

How can I combine these to attraction at best? My idea was: Day 1: Travel to Latacunga, leave our luggage in a hotel and afterwards start hiking to Cotopaxi (Refugee House). How are the bus connections between Quito and Latacunga? And how can I reach the Cotopaxi from Latacunga? Is it possible to to that all in one day? Or should I book a tour for that? Day 2: From Latacunga travel to Sigchos or Isinliví and start hiking towards Chugchilan. Day 3-x: Hiking to the crater. Day x: Transfer to Quito. Is it possible to catch a truck or bus without speaking Spanish (I know only basic words).

It would be great if you can give me some recommondations.

Greetings Markus

Hi Markus, I’m just realizing I never replied to this! To answer your questions: 1. Busses leave from Terminal Quitumbe to Latacunga almost constantly. I don’t believe there are any direct busses to Cotopaxi, but if you hop on a bus from Quito to Latacunga, you can get off at “la entrada de Parque Nacional Cotopaxi”. It’s only a few hours, so while it is possible for one day, you’d be backtracking. Your hotel in Latacunga should be able to recommend transport times and hire a driver for you if you prefer! 2-3. Sounds like a good plan! 4. Yes, definitely! If I’m not mistaken, the busses only pass twice a day, so it’s likely you might end up hiring a little truck (like the one pictured) and hopping in the back for your ride home. The drivers won’t likely speak English, but if you can communicate your destination, they’re used to tourists traveling along that route.

Best of luck with your trip planning, and please let me know how it goes! Taylor

sorry for my late reply, i didn’t see the answer (notifcation doesn’t work)

Thanks a lot for your answer. The more I read about Quilotoa the more I want to start now =)

The last plan was to skip Cotopaxi and just do the Quilotoa Loop (luggage will be left in Quito). But there is a lot of time to change the plan =)

Hey Taylor, what would you think about taking the bus to Sigchos from Latacunga and doing the hike to Insinlivi all in day 1(popular route)? Great article! Thank you for taking the time to help and share for the rest of us.

Hey Cody. Super glad you found the post helpful! The Quilotoa Loop is gaining popularity, but information was still hard to come by when we went a couple years ago! To answer your question, this is super possible. The hike from Sigchos to Insinliví only takes 3-4 hours and is along a well defined road. Hope you enjoy your trek!

Hey Taylor! Coming across your blog while searching about the Quilotoa trek makes me so happy. I’m headed here at the end of November with my best friend. Thanks for all of the great information!

Hi Crystal. I still get nerdy excited when Travel Outlandish comes up on Google 🙂 You guys will have the best time! Let me know if you have any questions that come up, will you?

YOU SHOULD BE NERDY EXCITED! Your win is our win for the travel community <3. Yes, I'll absolutely message you if things come up. Right now I'm DEEP in Amazon tour research and have finally narrowed it down to two places. Phew. Next up will be Galapagos planning and then back to Quilotoa stuff.

This post helped inspire us to make the Quilotoa Loop a must see on our backpacking trip through South America. It was 100% worth it! We made a step-by-step guide to help direct anyone hiking the loop, if you want to check it out! https://whirlwindtravellers.com/2018/01/07/complete-step-by-step-guide-to-hiking-the-quilotoa-loop/

Super informative, Alex! Glad you guys were able to make the trip 🙂

Tess Andrade

Can this trek be done as a solo female traveler? Would you consider it to be safe enough? Or would you recommend hiring a tour company?

Hey Tess. I’d say definitely yes! Do you speak a bit of Spanish? The only concern is that the trails are hard to follow, so you might need to ask locals from time to time to send you in the right direction. It’s a high traffic route, so it will also be easy to meet people at one of the hostels that you can join. Good luck out there!

Wouh! Super post! Thank you for sharing your experience! I have just returned from Ecuador and loved it! The lagoon Quilotoa is amazing and there are so many beautiful landscapes to discover in this country! I had the chance to stay long enough to discover everything! Also, I especially had the chance to meet a perfect Quito travel agency! She organized a great trip and gave me good advice! I recommend it to you! It’s Gulliver Expeditions if you want a great time go!

Hi , Thanks for the informative post. I have a question. I won’t doing the entire trek due to less time. I would be only going the quilota to chugchillan hike . I am confused where to store the luggage . I heard hostels to transfer luggage from quilota to chugchillan while you hike. is that right? Also I think its just a 1 day hike , could you confirm?

Hi Ananya. It’s only 3-4 hours from Quilotoa to Chugchilan, so this should be doable! Check out “The Easy Way | Quilotoa > Chugchilan | 2 Days” for more details. As for left luggage, I’d leave your stuff in Latacunga and pick it up after your trek. If you’re only doing a day hike, you should be able to get by with just a day pack. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Hello! What a great site. Thanks for all the info. Heading for Ecuador next July/Aug for a 3-week trip. Not long enough, but perhaps able to sample a bit of backpacking in the mountains and the coast. Had a question maybe you can help with: If I had 3-4 days for hiking – would you recommend the Quiltoa loop or Iliniza Norte? How would you say the two are different? Thanks!

Hey Jay. I’m so glad you’ve found it helpful! While the bus rides can get long, 3 weeks isn’t so bad for Ecuador. I only hiked Quilotoa, but from my understanding Illiniza Norte is high altitude and more of a proper mountain climb. Quilotoa is nice because you’re passing through meadows and local communities, but it feels more like a strenuous walk than a nature hike. Hope this helps a bit with your decision making, and let me know how you go!

Hi Taylor I will be hiking from Quilotoa to Chugchilan in early November this year but am worried seeing people’s blogs about not being able to find the route by the rim and describing the walk as a trail of death? Is this true and do you know where to start walking from if I catch the morning bus from chugchilan ? Are there any maps or walking guides I can get hold of?

Hi Cherry. The trails really aren’t well marked, but I wouldn’t call it a trail of death! For the most part, the hike is pretty gradual. You may make a wrong turn, but you won’t ever wander off the edge of a cliff. Your best bet is to stop at one of the hostels in Chugchilan (like Cloud Forest) or the information center in Quilotoa before starting your trek. They’ll give you a free map and can also describe in some detail how you make your way from Quilotoa back to Chugchilan without wandering off along the way. Hope this helps and let me know if any other questions come up!

Hello again! Heading to Ecuador next week! Am trying to figure out what warm gear to pack for the Quilotoa hike in 2nd week of July. I hear it gets cold. But I live and hike in NH so trying to gauge the clothing in comparison. Longjohns+fleece+down puffy? inner and outer gloves? Or is that overkill?

Hi Jay, we are doing the trek at the same time. We are from Colorado and also trying to figure out clothing. Maybe we’ll cross paths along the trail!

2024 Guide to Quilotoa Loop Ecuador: The Most Famous Hiking Trail

laguna de quilotoa tour

Would you like to trek around the Andes mountains, stopping at some small Ecuadorian villages, markets, factories, and farms between hikes? Find out more about the Quilotoa Loop Ecuador through this guide.

Ecuador has numerous hiking trails; one of the most famous is the Quilotoa Loop. Travelers worldwide love to enjoy this multi-day trek filled with cultural beauty and volcanic views .

The views of the mountains with Laguna de Quilotoa (Quilotoa Lake), an emerald lake filling the crater of the Quilotoa Volcano, is an experience that is not to be missed.

Table of Contents

What Is the Quilotoa Loop Ecuador?

Quilotoa Loop is a 24.8-mile (40 kilometers) circular trek around Quilotoa Volcano, with an altitude of 12,841 feet (3,914 meters) above sea level. The loop is a bumpy mountainous road that links many towns and Andean villages with the city of Latacunga.

Many visitors love to go on a day trip from Quito to admire the beauty of this beautiful place filled with many dormant and active volcanoes. However, some adventurers take a step further to experience this amazing cultural trek.

You can follow 1 route, and you can either hike it one way or the other:

  • Start from Sigchos and end up at Quilotoa Crater Lake – the way we recommend.
  • Start from Quilotoa Lake and end the trip at Sigchos.

The first route is from north to south, which is more convenient for beginners. However, if you are an expert climber with a lot of trekking experience, you can go for the second route, which is south to north.

On your trip, you will be passing through various towns and villages. These include Quilotoa, Isinlivi, Sigchos, and Chugchilan. The total trek will require 3 days to complete.

How To Get to the Quilotoa Loop

Using public transportation.

Using public transport is the cheapest and most convenient option. To get the transport to Quilotoa Lake, you must head towards the Quitumbe bus terminal. The bus will take you to the city of Latacunga. The bus driver can tell you where to get off.

When I was there, there were a lot of other tourists that were headed in the same direction.

From there, you can choose one of the 2 trekking routes available:

  • For Trekking Route 1 – From Sigchos to Quilotoa Crater Lake

If you choose to trek from Sigchos to Quilotoa, the bus ride from Latacunga will take around 3 hours to reach the starting point in Sigchos. If you arrive late in the dark, spend a night at Sigchos, as starting the hike is not recommended after midday.

  • For Trekking Route 2 – From Quilotoa Crater Lake to Sigchos

If you want to trek from Quilotoa to Sigchos (north to south), take a bus from Latacunga to Zumbahua. The bus will take about 2 hours to reach the destination.

From Zumbahua, ask for a ride, such as a private car or hitch a ride in a pick-up truck, to take you to Quilotoa.

Hiring Tour Operators

Hiring a tour agency can make things easier for you. However, you can only get the service in Quito. Quito is generally safe, so you don’t have to worry. A full-day trip to the Quilotoa loop starts at $60 per person, but that doesn’t include the full trek.

The 3-day tour charges around $510 per person. These packages are expensive, but the facilities and convenience make up for it.

Where to Stay in Quilotoa

1. latacunga.

Latacunga Ecuador Stock

Latacunga is the gateway to Quilotoa Loop, where you can decide the route you want for your trek. It is a fairly large city, but there is little to enjoy. However, it is the place where you can rest for a day or two before beginning your trip to the Quilotoa loop.

There are many good hotels in this area. Some of them that we can recommend are:

  • Hotel Makroz
  • REEC Latacunga by Oro Verde Hotels
  • Endamo Hotel

2. Sigchos

Sigchos is the largest town in the loop, so it is often selected as a starting point. However, the accommodation options in this area are quite limited. The atmosphere is relaxing, making it a good spot to spend some time before heading back.

There are 2 options for you to choose from:

  • Starlight Inn
  • Hosteria San Jose de Sigchos

3. Isinlivi

Isinlivi is a great spot to rest for the night during your trip. You will find this place on Day 2 after leaving the Chugchilan area.

There are many great hotels in this area, but the one we stayed at ourselves and will recommend the most is Llullu Llama Mountain Lodge . A sun terrace, amazing continental, vegetarian breakfast, and a bar make this place special.

Plus, they have actual llamas walking around, which made it much more special.

If you need help finding a room at Llullu Llama or they’re all booked out, consider the following hotels:

  • Hostal Taita Cristobal
  • Hostal El Inca

4. Chugchilan

Chugchilan is your final destination after a full-day hike. Hotels in this area are great, and the views make it even more special.

If you want to experience a luxurious experience without spending much, stay at one of the 3 mentioned below:

  • Hostal El Vaquero
  • Hostal Mama Hilda
  • Hostal Cloud Forest

5. Quilotoa Village

Scenic landscapes of Zumbahua village near world-famous Quilotoa Stock

Quilotoa Village has a few options for staying. There are 2 guesthouses and a lodge that travelers have highly recommended.

These include:

  • Hosteria Chukirawa
  • Runa Wasi Quilotoa
  • Hosteria Alpaka Quilotoa

Trekking Itinerary – Quilotoa Loop Ecuador Day to Day

In this section, we will choose Sigchos as a starting point. That means we will hike from north to south.

Make sure to leave your big backpack in your hostel, and only take what you need on the hike. Bring enough sunscreen, as you’re high up in the mountains, and the heat from the sun might burn your skin.

Day 1 – Sigchos to Isinlivi

Take the bus early in the morning from Latacunga to Sigchos. The bus takes around 2 hours, so it’s best to leave before 10 a.m.

Pro tip: Download the maps.me app on your phone to get the offline map of this area. The route is very clearly signed on the app.

Isinlivi is around 8.7 mi (14 km) away from Sigchos. You don’t need a map to reach this place. There are multiple signboards with directions, so you will always be aware of your way. The ascent on this hike is 1,447 ft (441 m), whereas the descent is around 1,631 ft (497 m).

The way from Sigchos to Isinlivi can also be done by bus, as it’s mostly hiking along the road, with the view not as spectacular as the other days. Be aware that while the scenery in the bus is beautiful, you’ll be driving along cliffs – which isn’t for the faint of heart.

If you’d want to walk that route, it would take around 3.5 hours. When you’re in the main square in Sigchos, follow the signs to Isinlivi.

After you’ve crossed a church, Nuestra Señora del Cisne, continue on a grass path. Check your offline maps while walking, as some small paths will lead to private properties. I ended up following the wrong path into a private property, including some unhappy dogs, so regularly checking the offline map is something I can highly recommend.

Once you cross the Rio Toachi (Toachi river) on a concrete bridge, you’ll start a steep ascent toward Isinlivi. Take occasional breaks to enjoy the views until you reach a dirt road leading to Isinlivi.

If you’d like to take the scenic route to the town, turn right just before the bus stop (a well-placed bench).

In Isinlivi, we stayed at the Llullu Llama Mountain Lodge . It had incredible views, we had dinner and breakfast with others at the hostel, and we got to walk the llamas in the garden.

Day 2 – Isinlivi to Chugchilan (Quilotoa Loop)

Isinlivi to Chugchilan is 7.5 mi (12 km), so the hike duration will be 5 to 6 hours. The directional signs on this path can be hard when you miss a sign, so ask for a map from your Isinlivi hostel reception before leaving.

Just follow the red and yellow signs to Chugchilán. You will experience multiple villages of Itualo and Chinalo and the river Toachi before reaching Chugchilán.

When you reach Itualo, walk past the church and turn right toward a small wooden shack. That will take you directly to Chinalo, where you’ll pass an incredible mirador (a lookout or viewing post): Mirador Cañón del Toachi. We took a break at the mirador to sit on the benches, enjoy the view, and eat something.

In Chinalo, you’ll find a sign that directs you to Chugchilán. You will be walking along the road at this point until you reach the village.

In Chugchilán, we stayed at the Hostal El Vaquero . Breakfast and dinner were provided by the hostel. The views were okay, but nothing compared to the Llullu Llama Mountain Lodge .

Day 3 – Chugchilan to Quilotoa (Quilotoa Loop)

The last day is the most difficult and beautiful, with 5 to 6 hours of hiking. It’s definitely worth the effort. You can also ask your hostel for a map, as there are 2 different routes you can walk; the normal route or the “adventurous” route.

According to the hostel owner, the adventurous route was closed due to mudslides, so we took the normal route. Make sure you confirm that the route is open when you’re visiting. When you start hiking, you’ll also see the different routes on the signs.

After hiking for a couple of hours, you’ll find yourself in Guayama San Pedro, a town located at an altitude of 10,696 ft (3,260 m). From here, you’ll follow the gravel path up. And up. And up.

Here’s where you have the first view of Quilotoa. Continue to the Quilotoa Mirador, where you’ll see the most incredible scenery.

Quilotoa has a beautiful crater lake, a 1.24 mi (2 km) hike down to the southwestern side of the village. You can enjoy it for a while before walking back to the town of Quilotoa. There are kayaks available for rent and a few craft shops for you to explore.

When you walk toward Quilotoa, make sure you stay on the higher path, even though maps.me mentions that you can also take the lower paths. I’ve heard some people who have had encounters with locals, as the lower path is for their livestock.

What To Prepare for the Quilotoa Loop Trek

Here are the most important things that you need to pack on your Quilotoa Loop hike:

  • Hiking clothes. Depending on the time of year you’re visiting, it can become very warm during the day.
  • Hiking shoes and rain clothes
  • Sun protection
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Some snacks and water bottles
  • A little cash in case of emergency
  • Waterproof bag to keep valuable items
  • A plastic bag for trash, as you’d want to take all your trash with you when hiking

Useful Tips for the Quilotoa Loop Ecuador Trek

Here are 5 expert tips to help you get the best out of your Quilotoa loop trek:

  • Reserve your rooms at the hostel or hotel beforehand, especially if you’re visiting in the high season.
  • Drink as much as possible to keep yourself hydrated during the hike.
  • Calculate your hiking hours to plan your trip properly.
  • Try to keep at least one person with you on the hike. While I was hiking the first day by myself, it would’ve been more comfortable to navigate unhappy dogs with more people around.
  • Acclimatize to reduce the risk of getting affected by weather and altitude.

How To Stay Safe During Your Quilotoa Loop Ecuador Trek

When hiking the Quilotoa Loop in Ecuador, prioritize safety by wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for the terrain and weather conditions. Carry enough water and snacks, as well as a map or GPS device to avoid getting lost on the trails.

Additionally, consider protecting yourself with travel insurance such as SafetyWing , which can cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen incidents during your stay. Use the widget below to snag the perfect policy for your needs and travel with peace of mind knowing you’ve got your back covered, no matter what adventures come your way!
