Kununurra's Most Central Waterfront Accommodation

You've done it. You’ve found Kununurra’s ‘Position Perfect’.

You already know that the East Kimberley is a stunning area with abundant waterways, ancient red landscapes and majestic boab trees.

What you should know is that your stay at Kimberleyland has all that and more.

On the rolling green banks of our foreshore, waterlilies bloom and the colours of the iconic Elephant Rock come alive on sunset.

Have your breath taken away and let the Kimberleyland Effect wash over you.

Meet our toothless, resident Freshwater crocodile “Gummy” or view our very own 1,000-year-old Boab tree.

Here at Kimberleyland, Kununurra comes to you.

There are no compromises with contemporary comforts. Our onsite café delivers coffee so good that you’ll be lining up with the locals.

Surrounded by green parks, the foreshore and native bushland it’s easy to forget it’s just 1.2km from Kununurra’s centre. Even closer is Kununurra’s largest children’s playground, a brand-new outdoor gym facility and boating jetty.

For many of you, it’s taken a long time to get here and it’s an honour you’ve chosen Kimberleyland as the place your Kimberley Memories begin.

Kimberleyland is Western Australia's only 4.5 Star Rated Holiday Park north of Perth , the most awarded Holiday Park in the Kimberley and among TripAdvisor’s top ten percent of Hospitality providers globally.

But the truth is you want to hear from 'Kimberleylanders' themselves.

Guide to Kununurra

Aboriginal name:  Goonoonoorrang (pronounced Goo-noo-noor-rang)

  • Share Share on Facebook Share on Messenger Share on Twitter Share on WhatsApp Copy Link
  • Getting to Kununurra
  • When to visit

Embrace adventure in a world of vast lakes, ancient ranges, iconic road trips and huge outback stations.

Kununurra is the gateway town to the East Kimberley, and a great base if you’d like to explore some of Western Australia’s most remarkable natural attractions, including World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park and its beehive-shaped Bungle Bungle Range. Adventure is synonymous with Kununurra, home to lakes, rivers, waterfalls and barramundi. It’s easy to see why the name means "Big Water" in the language of local Aboriginal people, who have roamed this landscape for thousands of years.

The Miriwoong Gajerrong people are the Traditional Owners of Kununurra/Goonoonoorrang. Hear Dreamtime stories, see traditional artworks and connect to the local Aboriginal culture on one of the cultural tours run by Waringarri Aboriginal Arts.

  • Traditional name: Goonoonoorrang (pronounced Goo-noo-noor-rang)
  • Indigenous Peoples: Miriwoong Gajerrong people
  • Traditional lands: Miriwoong Gajerrong
  • Traditional languages: Miriwoong Gajerrong

Kununurra is serviced by East Kimberley Regional Airport (locally known as Kununurra Airport), which welcomes flights from all major Australian cities via Darwin, Broome or Perth.

  • East Kimberley Regional Airport (KNX) is 4km (2.5mi) from Kununurra
  • Car hire is available from East Kimberley Regional Airport

You can also drive to Kununurra from Broome (10.5 hours) or Katherine (6.5 hours).

Kununurra experiences a wet season and a dry season. Much of the region’s accommodation and tours remain open year-round, but many consider the drier months between May and November to be the best time to visit. With that said, visitors willing to put up with a few days of rain during the wet season will be rewarded with thundering waterfalls and fewer crowds.

  • High season: Dry season (April to November)
  • Low season: Wet season (December to March)

Kununurra hotels & accommodations

Swimming pool

Really clean room, nice pool, good restaurant and bar. The only thing is that you need a car to go into town or walk 20 min. A bit pricey but BEST QUALITY PRICE in Kununurra. Avoid Country Club. They say they are luxury but they are not and the food is terrible with the new chef.

Kununurra Country Club Resort

Was booked at the Country Club for a wedding and it was a very central location to the facilities of Kununurra.

Food and beverages

Stayed 13th and 20th April, 2018 Friendly service, clean rooms and good continental breakfast to start the day. Great location just opposite the Kununurra Hotel for a drink and dinner which was also great value.

Exterior view

Great place to stay in Kununurra! Warm, homely, friendly & not too big - well appointed clean rooms with en suite - comfortable shared outside, dining & kitchen areas.

Surrounding environment

Discovery Park is well located, walking distance to a very good local restaurant, water front access to Lake Kununurra and only a short drive to the centre of town.

Emma Gorge Resort

The resort staff were really personable and helpful in every way possible. The eco tents and location of the accommodation was the best way to appreciate being in the middle of the bush with its serenity. We visited El Questro's accommodation and it seemed a bit too busy for my partner and I, which is why we really enjoyed staying at Emma Gorge.

Exterior view

resort has wonderful location, only a short drive from the main part of town, but on other side of lagoon. stayed in well appointed and clean cabin. caravans have the best vantage point to enjoy the lagoon, but great park area for all, with good tables and chairs to sit and enjoy the sunset on the lagoon and the bird life or sunshine. bar staff and very friendly and helpful, meals nice and our included breakfast was good. definitely stay there again.

Kimberley Croc Motel

I was fortunate enough to book a room under the Croc Motel's "mystery" booking and I payed only $41 for the night. Excellent value. Great rooms. Very friendly staff. Secure location.

Ivanhoe Village Caravan Resort

I stayed here with my senior parents for 3 nights. We had originally booked for 2 but liked it so much we changed our plans and stayed 3. Bali cabins are beautifully fitted out and very comfortable for 3 adults. Lee the Park Manager was incredibly helpful and provided all the info & help needed to make our stay in Kununurra a memorable one.

Accommodation In Kununurra

Wotif you escaped to the East Kimberley region of Western Australia 's Top End and spent some time amongst scenery so breathtakingly stunning that it was featured in Baz Luhrmann's 2007 blockbuster film, ‘Australia’? From the hot red sands of desert plains to wide blue skies, rugged forests and awe-inspiring natural rock formations, our Kununurra accommodation will place you in the perfect position to explore this wild and wonderful playground.

Kununurra is a fairly young town and was only established in 1963. It was built to be the main construction town of the Ord River Scheme, which was supposed to provide irrigation for nearby farms and future towns. However, the scheme turned out to be a bit of a flop and rather than being a great water provider for the region's agricultural farms, the Lake Argyle Dam is now mostly just a tourist attraction.

Things to do

There are plenty of places to cool off in Kununurra, with some of Australia’s most remarkable bodies of water on your doorstep. Lake Argyle is Australia's largest man-made lake and is 22 times the size of Sydney Harbour. In fact, its size is so vast that it's classified as an inland sea! The lake is the perfect spot for boating or doing a bit of bird and wildlife watching.

Back on dry land, the Bungle Bungle Range of the Purnululu National Park is a must-see while you're here. This World Heritage listed area is well-known for its orange and black striped sandstone domes, so make sure you bring your camera.

Shopping and dining

In town, there are plenty of dining options, from pub meals to humble takeaway, but you can also treat yourself to the ever-popular alfresco dining experience under the stars. As far as shopping goes, you'll only be able to pick up the basics here and maybe a couple of artworks from one of the local galleries.

Getting here and around

To get here, grab one of these cheap flights to Kununurra and hire a car at the airport. Make sure that you book ahead though because there aren't any other transport options in town. Kununurra is right next to the Northern Territory border and located on Highway 1, so you can take a road trip up to Katherine (about 500km away) or Darwin (about 300km past Katherine) if you'd like.

So wot are you waiting for? Book a room in one of our Kununurra hotels and get ready for a fantastic Aussie adventure, surrounded by incredible scenery!

About Kununurra

Welcome to kununurra (goonoonoorrang).

Kununurra is a relatively new town and was only established in 1961 as a service centre for the Ord River Irrigation scheme after the success of the first stage and lots of investment. Kununurra is a word derived from the Miriwoong word 'Goonoonoorrang' (alternatively Gananoorrang) which means 'river' - a perfect name for the town that sits on the banks of the mighty Ord River. Kununurra initially sustained a population of 400 people, today the town supports a population of 5,200 – this can swell to double during the dry season when the tourists are in town! This number is also set to increase significantly as the area becomes more and more important with further investment into the Ord River Irrigation Area .

One of Kununurra's most famous landmarks is the Ord River Diversion Dam which was constructed in 1963 at a cost of roughly $20m and plays a big part in controlling the flow of water for the irrigation of crops in the area. The dam wall is 335 metres wide and contains 20 radial gates which can be closed and opened depending on the need for water flow. Water is continually released from Lake Argyle, 55kms downstream along the Ord River, into Lake Kununurra which in turn provides the water for approximately 18000 ha of farmland. The main crops grown in Kununurra are sandalwood, mangoes, chia, citrus and melons as shown in the image below.

A Taste of the East Kimberley.

Western Australia is one of the oldest lands on Earth, and the East Kimberley region boasts a wide variety of environments ranging from semi desert lands, rugged ridges and coastal fringes to lush tropical micro environments, all alive with a wide selection of unique flora and fauna. Aboriginal history and activity in the East Kimberley dates back more than 40,000 years and the Aboriginal rock art that exists in the Kimberley region is recognised as some of the best examples of rock paintings found anywhere in the world. Today the East Kimberley offers visitor access to different styles of art inspired not only by the strong traditions of the local Aboriginal people but also art flavoured by the passions of artists of non Aboriginal descent who call the East Kimberley home.

Patient Assisted Travel Scheme leaving country WA residents unfairly out of pocket for medical treatment, advocates say

Katie Willcocks was attacked by a swarm of bees while mowing her lawn.

The terrifying incident, days before Christmas last year, sent her into preterm labour, with the 42-year-old flown to hospital in Perth.

It was about five months before she returned to her home near Lake Grace in Western Australia's eastern Wheatbelt.

But her time in the city also had a financial impact — with family-friendly accommodation near the hospital, transport and childcare totalling about $68,000.

The mother-of-two has so far been reimbursed about $14,000 through the WA government's Patient Assisted Travel Scheme (PATS), which provides financial support to regional and remote residents for certain medical treatments that can't be received locally.

But with the lowest fuel subsidy in the nation and an accommodation rebate of about $106 per night, there are fresh concerns that the scheme is failing to meet the needs of those who rely on it.

A toddler and a dog.

Ms Willcocks described her experience with PATS as being "beyond a joke".

Her frustrations were aimed at the logistical hurdles and wait times for having claims processed, as well as the "inadequate" rebate payments.

"One hundred dollars a night, at the drop of a hat, doesn't cut it," Ms Willcocks said.

"We don't expect a goldmine and we don't expect it all to be covered … we just expect it to be fair."

Amid the cost-of-living crisis, the state's community service sector also has issues with the efficacy and scope of the PATS program.

'Grave concerns'

At 16 cents per kilometre, WA's PATS fuel subsidy is the lowest in the country.

By comparison, South Australia pays 32 cents per kilometre, while New South Wales pays 40 cents.

In WA, PATS recipients are entitled to $106 per night for commercial accommodation, with a further $15 for an "approved support person".

But the average price of a night's accommodation in Perth exceeds $200.

In its pre-budget submission, the peak body for the WA community service sector urged the government to improve the adequacy and effectiveness of PATS.

WA Council of Social Services chief executive Louise Giolitto said she had "grave concerns" about the scheme.

"There definitely needs to be an increase in funding and resources for people to come to Perth metro to receive those health services we know are simply not available in many regional locations," she said.

Patients are reimbursed by PATS, but Ms Giolitto said many people struggled to pay up-front.

"The rebates people are getting for accommodation are a lot less than the actual cost of staying in commercial accommodation, and we know how hard it is to get accommodation in Perth at the moment," she said.

"No person should be forced to choose between their health needs and other cost-of-living measures – this needs to be fixed immediately."

Recommendations ignored

A 2015 inquiry into PATS found the 16 cents per kilometre fuel subsidy to be out of line with "realistic" costs.

Back then, the average price of unleaded fuel in WA was between $1.30 and 1.50 per litre.

A submission to the inquiry from the Cancer Council of WA described the reimbursement as "grossly inadequate".

But, almost a decade later, it remains unchanged.

In 2021, the government increased the accommodation subsidy from $60 per night to $100 per night.

However, the 2015 report also recommended that the accommodation subsidies be reviewed annually and adjusted "if necessary, in line with inflation".

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said that between July last year and the end of March, PATS had provided $33.76 million in subsidies to more than 30,000 West Australians needing "specialist medical care not available locally".

She said the government regularly monitored PATS, while investing "heavily in boosting access to healthcare services in regional communities".

Ms Sanderson was one of five MPs who took part in the 2014-15 inquiry into PATS.

Shadow Minister for Regional Health Martin Aldridge said the fuel and accommodation subsidies needed to increase, citing the government's forecast 2024-25 surplus of $2.6 billion.

"When fuel is often north of $2 a litre in our regions … it is grossly insufficient," he said.

"Western Australia is the wealthiest state in the nation, yet we pay the least to our regional patients accessing services."

The Member for the Agricultural Region said constituents regularly came forward with PATS-related issues.

'It should be automatic'

Ms Willcocks said she was happy to be back on the farm with her husband and children.

But the stress of her recent health ordeal has taken a toll.

Apart from expanding the PATS subsidies, she would also like the scheme's paperwork requirements simplified.

"It's the simple things that become hard because you're away from home – you don't have a printer or scanner," she said.

"It should be automatic … they managed to develop an app overnight to track us all with COVID.

"So why are we still doing this ludicrous method of old school, print-sign-scan."

She said people in the regions deserved better.

"It's a certain type of person that can live in the bush and live regionally," she said.

"But what's the government going to do to help keep us here?"
