Tour the floating islands of los Uros (1/2 day)

Why did travelers choose us.

Touristy but still a good way of seeing the islands and their culture

It's a long day, with about 5 hours on the boat, but you definitely get a feel of the scale of Lake Titicaca. The Islas Uros visit is clearly staged for tourists but it is well done, and it's interesting to learn about their way of life. There is a bit of hard sell to purchase their goods, but you can say no. The boat taxi ride (an optional extra) is well worth the 10 soles cost, just to marvel at its construction! Taquile island is also interesting - we were lucky with the weather so could see Bolivia in the distance. The lunch stop was rustic and charming - tasty food and demonstrations of local culture. Our guide was fluent in Spanish and English so provided lots of interesting facts and figures throughout the day. Well worth the USD20 cost.

I have really mixed feelings about this tour. The Amantani and Taquile islands were amazing, but I hated pretty much everything else. 1. The Uros islands are interesting in their concept, but now are only for the tourists. There is nothing (or very little) authentic about them. We landed on the first island, where we had to listen to lenghty demonstration of how they build the islands and how they “live”. This was followed by some free time, which basically meant the “locals” chased us to their huts to sell us something. There was nothing else to do. This was followed by “optional” boat ride to the second island which wasn’t really optional and we had to pay extra 10 soles for this. The second island consisted just of tourist shops and restaurants. 2. Amantani island was beautiful and the family that we stayed with was great. Also the food was very tasty and there was plenty of it. 3. However, the time at Amantani was extremely organized with almost no free time. After having lunch with the family, they brought us to the main square for the organized hike and also came to pick us up after the hike to bring us back home - no chance to walk around unsuperwised. I’m sorry but we are not 5, we can walk back to the house by ourselves. 4. Once we met for the hike, we didn’t start hiking right away but had a really strange session where they introduced the hosts (“This is Juliana, she allways works, let’s clap for her.”) and asked weird questions like - Do you like your guests? Do you like your families? Who is from France, raise your hands... At the end they made all the hosts line up and told us to all take pictures NOW. The whole thing was a complete waste of time and actually felt quite disrespectful to the locals. 5. The hike wasn’t thankfully organized very much (so I’m not sure why we had to meet before it) but we had to meet at a certain time afterwards at a restaurant. “Conveniently” the hosts came to pick us up later than the agreed time. If they gave us free afternoon to do the hike and wander around the island as we desired, it would have been much much better. 6. We skiped the evening party as that felt too ridiculous (having to dress in traditional clothes for an “authentic local party” that somehow takes place everyday that the tourist arrive...right) 7. The next morning was again very rushed, and we again had to be escorted by the family to the meeting point. Eventhough we spent the night on the island, we had absolutely no time to explore it. 8. The time at Taquile was the best as it consisted mostly of hiking (both organized and some free time). The explanation they gave there was actually interesting (finally) and wasn’t unnecesserily long. Overall - lake Titicaca is amazing and so are Amantani and Taquile islands. But I would strongly recommend to try your best and do it independently. There are collectivo boats to both of those islands from Puno. I’m not sure if there is a boat between the two of them and how to arrange the homestays but there has to be a way and the effort spent figuring it out will definitely pay off. The constant control, organization of every minute, ridiculous attitude towards the locals and the time spent at the Uros islands really took away from what could have been a great experience. The tour was pretty cheap so at least it was not a huge waste of money, just a small one.

Puno was our last leg of the 10 day Peru trip & we had taken 3 guided tours in other cities. Most tours were average with the tour guide struggling to explain with few english words they knew . Pros - tour was really well organized & structured - our tour guide Manu ( manuel) was extremely good & was able to communicate in very good english .plus he was a good entertainer as well - Food was awesome , trout was super fresh . Other option was omelette & some quinoa soup - local gathering during lunch was entertaining, they had dance , song & other local culture education given to the tourist - Uros islands gathering was also very pleasant . Thought the interaction with locals were staged , but still it was an interesting experience - Boat & Minivan ( Merc ) was super comfortable . In fact , we were late in the morning , the Van came back again to pick us up - No hard selling for extra stuff . Cons - When reached the gate for boat, it started pouring hailstones & we were wet in 5 mins in cold rain . & Boat guys were taking more time to let us in , which could have been avoided

I did the 1 day Uros-Taquile tour with Kollasuyo, and I wasn't disappointed. For a dirt cheap price ($20 usd), we had a 10 hour excursion into Lake Titicaca, entering the Uros Islands, before taking a gander at Taquile, including one of the best meals I've had in many months. While a good half of the day is spent on the boat, getting to the islands, it's still absolutely a great option for spending a day in Puno. My major complaint is this: it's so done up for tourists. The entire time during interactions with the indigenous peoples, it seemed like it was just a show. Our guide, professional and respectful as he was, seemed inclined to bossing the individuals around, not what I'd expect during this experience. But looking past that, the tour itself was very well managed, including pick-up and drop off from 90% of hotels and hostels in Puno.

I purchased the 2 day/1 night tour from Kollasuyo Travel for myself and my husband. Please keep in mind that your tour will some additional (optional) costs. I have made a short list of additional costs you may want to budget for when taking this trip at the bottom of this review. All of the additional costs were reasonable and the trip was 100% worth it! I would recommend this tour if you are: open to new adventures, are flexible, and love to learn about new cultures and people. If you are looking for a comfortable, "all-inclusive" vacation experience you may want to look for another type of adventure. TIPS: Bring cash, gifts of food for your host family are encouraged (purchase these at a local supermarket the day before, food is also sold at the marina ar a higher cost), bring snacks (especially if you have dietary restrictions). Highlights: The company was very punctual with the pickup. We rode in comfortable vans to the marina. Our tour guide, BRUNO, was amazing! He is a local guide who has real relationships with the communities we visited. He was a great cultural liason who gave us information on the geography history and people of lake Titicaca. The first stop was the Urus island. We got a great explanation of how they construct the floating islands and we also got to see the homes. Everyone was very welcoming, although there was some pressure to purchase souvenirs. You had an option to take a reed boat (S 10 p/p) to the second urus island where you could purchase some incredible coffee and sandwiches (coffee S 7, sandwiches S 5-7). We then road for three hours to Amantaní island. Our host families greeted us at the shore. Our host family (Solano) walked us to his home which was 10min away. The room was clean and simple. We were fed the most amazing quina soup in the family kitchen. Our evening walk was to the pachatata ruins at the top of the island (4160 mts). The 360 degree views at the top of the mountain were breathtaking. The small ruins are sacred to the locals and are fenced off, but you can see them from the gate. After dinner that night our host family dressed us in local clothing and were whisked off to a local dance! The local dance group was very talented and we had a great time. We left to Isla Taquile early on Day 2. Bruno gave us a brief explanation about the cultural differences between the islands and how these are expressed in the local textiles. We visited a weaving cooperative and had coffee at a local shop. We then had lunch at a restaurant on their terrace which had beautiful views of the lake. Our trip back was 2 hour long. I am so appreciative of ELMER'S great navigation skills. He got us back to Puno safely although there was a huge storm coming into shore. I forgot my winter coat on the boat and only realized this hours after we got back to our Airbnb. We called the company and they reached Elmer who went back to the boat in the pouring rain and took it to the office for us to pick up! We are so appreciative of this kind and honest act. Thank you to everyone at Kollasuyo Travel for our wonderful experience. ♥️ Extra Expenses (no credit cards on the islands): Tips (all optional): - Musician at marina - Musicians at local dance - Host family - Guide - Driver Extra Services/Costs - Food at Urus Islands (prior to 3hr trip to Amantaní) - Reed boat tour at Urus island - Snacks at Amananti (there are several stores) - Souvenirs at Urus - Souvenirs in Taquile (textiles in Taquile are some of the finest textiles you will see anywhere. 100% woth the price!) - Souvenirs in Amananti - Lunch in Taquile if your package doesn't include lunch (ours did)

My husband and I booked the one day tour through Bolivia Hop. The price is reasonable, the guide was good and very knowledgeable and overall it was a good day. Unfortunately, the tour group was very crowded (about 30 people) and a lot of our group were very culturally insensitive and wanted to almost exploit the local people making the day quite uncomfortable. Examples include shouting at the locals whilst trying to haggle a price for crafts, picking up the children for photos and one person even grabbed a child's head to position them for a photo. This tour could definitely be improved by smaller groups or more guides to help control this awful behaviour.

Debating on which company to go with to do a day trip on high speed boat to Uros and Taquile. Kollasuyo offers an additional stop at Llachon so leaning towards that, but All Ways has better reviews. Thoughts?

' class=

I vote for All Ways

I've used Allways and liked them and they get a lot of recommendations in guide books and here on TA. I've never head of the other company. That doesn't mean they are bad, but they are definitely less well known.

Thank you for your reply. I will probably go with All Ways.
