KBS Tour Iron Shaft Review

50 Words or Less

The smoothest shaft in the heavy weight iron shaft category.  Promotes a higher ball flight than its closest competitors.

Introduction

Most people would look at the stranglehold that Dynamic Gold and Project X have on the heavy weight iron shaft market and choose another battle to fight.  Kim Braly isn’t most people.  He jumped into the fight with the KBS Tour, and has converted thousands of golfers, including major champions, to his brand.  In this review, we examine why.

KBS Tour (2)

Where most heavy weight iron shafts are focused on stability, the trademark of the KBS Tour is its smooth feel.  There’s a distinct feeling of the shaft loading and kicking during the swing.  This is not to say that the shaft isn’t stable.  Most of the action is in the middle of the shaft, so you don’t sacrifice a stable tip to get this smooth feel.

KBS Tour (4)

Performance

Though it’s not a night and day difference, the KBS Tour does tend to promote a higher ball flight than its competitors Dynamic Gold and Project X.  This makes it an excellent choice for golfers who tend to be low ball hitters or those who simply prefer to see the ball in a higher trajectory window.

KBS Tour (3)

If you prefer a heavy weight iron shaft, but want a smoother feel, KBS Tour is for you.  It’s also a great choice for players who are seeking a slightly higher ball flight from their iron play.

What does the KBS Tour 120 shafts compare to vs S300 shaft? Driver swing speed of 95-98 mph 3/4 handicap

“Though it’s not a night and day difference, the KBS Tour does tend to promote a higher ball flight than its competitors Dynamic Gold and Project X.”

Can i use this shaft for my wedges? Or this shaft is for iron only (3-9,P)?

KBS makes a wedge version.

' src=

I just purchased Titleist AP2 Irons with KBS regular shafts, they are very balanced irons and mid-high ball flight. With this iron shaft there is no whipping and very smooth, I am 62 Years old but still can swing a club and I am very impressed with the combo, spending a little extra money for your irons is well worth it.

' src=

My elbows struggle with vibration of steel shafts. I am 65 years old and still play competitive Senior Amateur Golf events. I like your c tapered 110 feel. Will adding an after market dampening rod help the vibration issues of your shafts. Any suggestions appreciated.

I’ve used vibration dampening products, and they do change the feel, but I don’t know if they will help with your pain.

71 Young man, if you still have pain. Your left hand grip for righty is way to weak . Go stronger and don’t pull so much . Happy Birthday .

What is an alternative choice for the KBS Tour S shaft? Best Nippon or True Temper Product Models as an alternative choice??? Please respond to my email address submitted, already get your newsletter.

Stock advice: work with a fitter to find a good solution. Blind guess: I would take a look at the Nippon Modus for smooth feel.

' src=

I am currently playing Mizuno Pro 900 irons with the KBS tour x shaft. I am going to get a set of Mizuno mp-18 blade irons. If I go to the Nippon modus 120 x shaft am I going to have a similar feel but lighter. Mizuno does offer a KBS shaft in lighter shaft X flex. Thank you, J.Baker

I think you will find the Modus 120 to be a bit different than the KBS Tour. I would suggest working with a fitter to find something that fits your swing.

' src=

I am purchasing Titleist 716 AP1 irons and are considering the Dynamic Gold or KBS shaft. I play of 10 but are wayward with my irons. Which shaft is better for a straighter ball flight and more consistency? Thanks Ben

That depends on which one fits you better. I would suggest working with a fitter before you lay down your money.

' src=

I read your review on the Taylormade M2 TOUR irons and disagreed, then read the KBS review which is what I have on my M2 TOURS and I love them. Comment? Thanks, Jeff

Comment on what?

Hi, I cannot find the perfect balance and feel I had on my old Pings i15 with the first version of the kbs tour S. What was the weight of those shafts?

I’m not aware of any substantial changes to the KBS Tour since it was released. KBS would have more information on that.

' src=

Is the KBS TOUR stiff to heavy a shaft for a 13 handicapper swinging 90’s? I usually hit R300 really high but feedback and distance is hortible.

If you’re currently playing Dynamic Gold, the weight difference is negligible.

' src=

What is the difference between the kbs tour 130x and the tour v with tour spec 130x ?

We have a review of the Tour V here: https://pluggedingolf.com/kbs-tour-v-iron-shaft-review/

' src=

Hi – is the True Temper XP 115 S300 (fitted, 88swing speed, mid launch and 6200 spin with 6i) a comparable shaft to the Tour Stiff?

The KBS Tour is heavier but otherwise there are some similarities.

' src=

hi I currently play off 6 and play titleist ap1 with xp 95 shafts , I am considering changing to tailormade tp mb with kbs reg flex can give some advice ? I fear the kbs maybe to heavy ??? kind regards Graeme

Adding nearly 30 grams will be a significant change. Have you talked with a fitter about it? Tried some irons with similar weight shafts?

Hi Matt, I currently play TaylorMade R9 irons with a Taylormade 90 by FST Stiff shaft. I’m upgrading to Tailor-made M4 irons with a Max 85 Shaft. Any thought on which would be more comparable to my existing shafts? The Stiff or a Regular Max 85? I think there both lighter than my existing shaft. Thanks.

I would suggest trying both with the help of a fitter to find the better fit.

' src=

May I know how much weights for the S shaft ?

The stiff weighs 120 grams.

' src=

What’s the weight? I have these in my a12 pros and I can’t seem to find any specs on them. Thanks

' src=

I purchased some Mizuno irons with KBS shafts. On the label they say KBS under that is Tour by FST, by the KBS it has a small R inside a circle. I am trying to find out if these are regular or stiff, nothing on the shafts say either regular or stiff.

That sounds like a regular flex, but without seeing a picture I can’t say for certain.

' src=

No, small r inside circle is the registered trademark, not regular.

' src=

What shafts are used for the king cobra f9, beside fujikura atoms 6 one length or KBS 0.37 Tip

' src=

HI Matt, I’ve been gaming the original KBS since 2009 w/ my Mizuno MP 58’s MMC. I’m eyeing a set of MP 18 SC in the KBS tour. Would you say the shaft profile and characteristics is the same as the original KBS that I’m playing now?

To my knowledge, KBS has not changed the original KBS Tour since it was released.

' src=

I am currently playing Mizuno Hot metal withveylix Alpina 673 shaft. I am 72 and these irons are terrible for me. Handicap on way up

' src=

Been fitted for X100s and KBS X shafts in new srixon zx7s. Numbers on the trackman are neck and neck. Averaging 98mph club head speed with 7-iron. A lot of comments I read say they prefer the X100s and that they flight lower than KBS x.

Thoughts on the two shafts? How much lower would the x100s flight and would it be worth taking into account?

Did you see a lower flight from the X100 in your fitting? My experience is that DG flies a bit lower than KBS Tour, but your results may vary.

' src=

Hi , I am 47 and my handicap is 13, I ordered for Miura MC-501 iron sets but little confused whether i am gonna fit KBS Tour R 110 g or Stiff 120 g !!! Could you please suggest which one will be perfect for me ? Thanks in advance

The only way to know which shaft is best is to get fit. Online, all anyone can do is guess, unfortunately.

' src=

There’s the occasional discussion on the internet from time to time about KBS Tour being ‘counterbalanced’ and ‘building to lower swingweights’ (I presume in comparison to DG). Is this true for this shaft?

That’s a good question. I’ve never noticed the KBS Tour to feel strongly counterbalanced, so I’ve never taken the time to measure. So, short answer: I’m not sure.

' src=

Just picked up a set of KBS Tour By FST shafts but they don’t have a weight or flex sticker on them. How can I tell what flex they are?

You could have a club builder check their CPM to get an idea of that.

' src=

Does it get old telling people to work with a fitter to find the best shaft for them? lol

No, I never get tired of giving people the advice that will actually help them play better golf.

' src=

Old thread I know. Is there any whippy feeling with these in the tour flt 110 regular flex? My ball speed with 7 iron with true temper Amt red hovers around 115. Not sure swing speed. I know go get fitted, but how similar to the amt red would these fall? Of course not the descending weight, but as for whippy- I don’t want that lol.

Feel is subjective, so unfortunately I can’t tell you whether or not these will feel “whippy” to you.

' src=

Matt: I love my new Mizuno JPX923 irons with KBS Tour Reg. Shafts. I have 4 Ben Hogan Wedges I really like but they have APEX 4 shafts which are too stiff for me now that I am 70 years old. In your opinion will the KBS Tour Reg. Shafts be good for my Hogan Wedges? Thanks

I can’t speak to your swing but I like having matching shafts from my irons through my wedges.

' src=

Are these like the c taper where most people play the stiff + if they are typically x flex?

The C Taper and KBS Tour are very, very different shafts.

' src=

I purchased p770s and didn’t do enough research and got kbs tour black shafts 120g.

My driver swing speed is about 97mph – are these shafts too heavy for me?

I hit the ball okay but notice my carry distances are much shorter than my old callaway rogue st max irons

I would never tell a player that a given weight is universally too heavy or too light for a given speed. What matters is A) fit and B) goals. If you want to get more distance, 120 gram shafts probably isn’t the way unless going lighter causes your ball striking to suffer.

KBS Tour Shaft Review

Kbs tour shaft.

The shaft that started it all – the KBS Tour shaft.  Kim Braly’s signature shaft, the KBS Tour, is designed for players that want to be able to play a wide range of shots with more of a mid trajectory.  What most players seem to love the most though is the smooth feel and shot feedback.

KBS Tour Shaft 8

How Does it Feel?

I would put the KBS Tour as the most “neutral” feeling shaft of the KBS lineup.  The Tour does in fact feel incredibly smooth and easy on the hands. I would almost argue that the Tour is even forgiving on your hands on a mishit.  Whereas a typical steel shaft may sting a bit, the Tour seems to absorb the blow more.  Don’t get me wrong, if you hit your MP-18 MB wrong, you’re still going to pay for it in the hands.  It just won’t sting as bad as normal…so I’ve found.  I even commented to our own Jon, “this shaft makes an MB feel much less harsh.”  Jon concurred and promptly tried to steal my clubs.

There is a definite energy transfer at impact, but it has a much more gradual feel as opposed to a precise kickpoint.  I will say that you can tell it’s happening in the middle of the shaft, but it doesn’t feel like a precise snap.  The feeling is much more of a smooth release.   This may sound crazy, but think of it almost like a smooth toss of a baseball that firmly, but not too hard, hits your dad right in the glove while you’re having a catch in the back yard.  That, to me, is the feel of the KBS Tour’s release.

KBS Tour Shaft 2

On-Course Performance

My experience with the KBS Tour shaft is a true testament to “every swing is a snowflake.”  The Tour is supposed to be a mid-launch shaft with medium spin.  Admittedly, I’m not a high-spin iron player as is, but I hit the Tour just about the same average as my lowest spinning shaft of the KBS lineup.  My averages for launch were the lowest of the KBS group to date as well.  That said, I think there’s a decent reason for this.  When reviewing my data, it was apparent that there is a lot of versatility in the KBS Tour .  I was able to easily adjust trajectory while adding or taking spin off of shots.  Being able to easily hit such a variety of shots is a big win for this shaft.

I’ve hit multiple clubs with the Tour in them over the years, albeit never my own set, and the natural shot shape is always the same.  A neutral swing always results in a smooth draw for me.   Let me tell you, my natural shot is not an easy draw.  This draw from the KBS Tour is automatic and seemingly built into the shaft for me.  It’s been consistent enough for me over the years that, along with my testing, it’s hard for me to ignore.  Will this be the case for everyone?  Can’t say, but there’s something there that has my attention and I don’t hate that shot shape.  Just tying ribbons over here (that’s a shot tracer on TV reference)…

KBS Tour Shaft 6

Final Thoughts

My opinion is that the KBS Tour is a solid all-around iron shaft.  I think other shafts in the KBS lineup have a little more of a “wow factor” to them, but the Tour is solid for a wide range of players that want a premium shaft with versatility.  A smooth profile and easy shotmaking should make the KBS Tour appealing to golfers of all skill levels.  Including the best in the world .

Kirkland Signature Irons 19

Hi Bill. I am a young 38 with a lot of golf life left in him. I took the pandemic as an opportunity to know and own my swing. Despite my gains in accuracy and a new found draw and occasionally hook, I am looking for my next iron shaft. I have been told my swing is a bit aggressive, and my irons have always gone high – no problem getting the ball in the air. Would you say the Tour is a good shaft for a golfer with this description? I was also considering the new KBS Tour Lites. Did you see much difference between the Tour and the Tour lite in the numbers. Thanks!

' src=

Tour Lite will likely go even higher. If you have an aggressive swing, the Tour might be a bit soft and high too. I would think you need to go with something more stout/firm. Maybe Tour V?

' src=

Would you recommend this golf shaft to someone that isn’t a beginner at golf but doesn’t get out as much to play? I have steel shafts now and I want something lighter but not as light as a graphite shaft. Thanks!

Yeah, I wouldn’t say it’s a measure of “skill set” but more how your swing will interact with the equipment.

' src=

Hey Bill – I’m a 34 y/o single-digit handicapper that’s always been a strong, aggressive ball striker. I recently made the switch from an old set of Titleist ZM forged musclebacks (classic Dynamic Gold stiff 120g shafts) to T100s with Project X 6.5 shafts. I know this is contrary to almost everyone, but I absolutely hate my T100s (and I’m a Titleist lover). I rarely find the sweet spot; have lost 10-ish yards per club; and chunk more shots than ever. I do hit them very straight though, but my shots are low and short. I’m going to switch back to a muscleback iron set, because I just love them! I’ve actually been recommended the direct-to-consumer Takomo 301 MBs by several people, which you might have heard of. I’m wondering if you have any suggestions on a KBS shaft. I’m thinking about going with either the KBS Tour or C Taper in stiff 120g. Maybe the move from the Dynamic Gold stiff 120g to Project X 6.5 125g could have made that much of a difference in my distance, trajectory, etc? From what I’ve seen, the lofts are very similar. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Don’t know anything about those irons, sorry. But I can tell you that the KBS Tour has pretty much nothing in common with the other three shaft options you listed. The C-Taper is a stout low launch/spin option and the PX is closer to that. The dynamic gold is somewhere in between those two and the KBS Tour. I think you need to do some testing/fitting to really get the answer you’re looking for in your game. With the game it sounds like you’re talking about, anything else would just be a blind guess with a hole and a prayer.

Thank you so much, sir! I’ve set up a fitting with a Golf Digest top 100 fitter next Saturday. I’ve always been cheap on golf (other than my CC membership) and have never had a lesson. That, coupled with me being left-handed, has always prevented me from seeking a professional club fitting. But, I’m going to finally treat myself a do so! God bless!!!

KBS is named after its owner and founder Kim Braly. KBS has worked closely with PGA professionals to build golf shafts that offer versatility and a controlled ball flight. The KBS Tour shaft was designed for players of all abilities. The KBS Tour steel shaft is a mid-trajectory iron and wedge shaft that gives the player a signature smooth feel. The KBS Tour maximizes energy transfer to give players more lift and easier launch with their irons and wedges. Amateur players will love the responsive feel of the KBS Tour and the control of this top-of-the-line golf shaft is trusted by some of the world’s best players.

Impactradius

The KBS Tour golf shaft is designed with every golfer in mind. With 6 flex and weight ranges, the KBS Tour shaft can be built to any playing preference and ball flight. Used by some of the world’s best golfers, KBS shafts are known for their impressive responses and smooth feel. Players looking to get their irons fit for more distance and accuracy need to be testing the KBS Tour shaft. The first thing that stood out to me during my testing of the KBS Tour shaft was the signature feel that Mr. Braly promises. The KBS Tour shaft is one of the easiest shafts to hit and didn’t require my best swing to get a controlled and accurate ball flight. Playing my iron shafts at 125-grams, I tested the Stiff+ model of the KBS Tour shafts. I thought for the majority of golfers, the KBS Tour iron shaft is a fantastic option and would not hesitate to put it into the hands of players with a variety of swing speeds. KBS delivers a golf shaft that is easy to launch and a pleasure to swing. The KBS Tour is one of the best shafts for players that swing below tour-level swing speeds but desire the ultimate control with their irons and wedges. The KBS Tour shafts are truly versatile and great for players with smooth tempos, especially with high and mid-handicaps .

The KBS Tour 120 Stiff Shaft is a common stiff shaft for a golf club. It’s designed for incredible speed that stacks up among the best. However, having too stiff of a golf shaft can greatly impact your swing forgiveness. So, is the KBS Tour 120 Stiff Shaft the right choice for you?

The KBS Tour 120 Stiff swing speed is between 84 to 90 miles per hour. This shaft weighs 120 grams, and it has a .355 taper to the tip. Professionals can often get over 90 miles per hour (145 kph), but it’s far from average.

Throughout this post, I’ll show you how fast the KBS Tour 120 Stiff Shaft can swing, how you can make it swing faster, and whether or not it’s the right speed for you.

How Fast Does a KBS Tour 120 Stiff Swing?

According to Today’s Golfer , a KBS Tour 120 Stiff Shaft is rated between 84 to 90 miles per hour (135-145 kph) , which is an average of 5 miles per hour (8 kph) more than the 115. If you’re looking to go over 90 miles per hour (145 kph) with an average swing speed, you’ll have to upgrade to the 120 or the 130.

Remember that these speed estimates are based on the company’s averages. In other words, a poor swing, bad address, and various weather conditions can reduce the speed.

How to Swing Faster With a KBS Tour 120 Stiff Shaft

To swing faster with a KBS Tour 120 Stiff Shaft, follow these recommendations:

  • Keep your leading leg semi-straight, then rotate it back with your lowered rear hip (whichever hip isn’t leading) before swinging.
  • Focus on centering while at address to ensure you make complete contact with the ball.
  • Choose a multilayer golf ball with more than 300 divots for speed purposes.

Is the KBS Tour 120 Stiff Shaft Right for You?

The KBS Tour 120 Stiff Shaft is right for you if you prefer above-average swing speed without exceeding 100 miles per hour. It’s very rare for a KBS Tour 120 to go over 90 miles per hour, but mastering your driver positioning and backswing while choosing the right golf ball can make a big difference.

The KBS 120 Tour Steel Shaft (available on Amazon.com) is significantly more powerful than the 115 and 110 variants. It can get you much closer to 95 miles per hour (153 kph) on a good drive. These shafts are 37 inches (94 cm) with the previously mentioned .355-inch taper from top to bottom.

Stix Golf reports that stiff shafts are better for people with fast, aggressive swings. These stiff KBS 120 shafts are also great for taller people who typically hit around 230-yard drives. They don’t flex very much, but they can help you reach the green if you can improve your accuracy.

Final Thoughts

Improving your golf speed will help the golf ball slice through wind resistance, improve its hangtime, and drive it closer to the green. Choosing the KBS Tour 120 Stiff Shaft is a great way to improve your swing speed, but its lack of flexibility can be a bit challenging for beginners.

KBS Tour 120 Vs. S300; Comparison By Sportic Media

KBS Tour 120 Vs. S300; Comparison By Sportic Media

What is the difference between the KBS Tour 120 and the S300? If we compare the KBS Tour 120 to the S300s, KBS will launch higher and have better dispersion. The S300s are weaker at 5.8, and KBS S is stronger at 6.0.

The S300s would be more comparable to the KBSs at 6.1 if they were hard-stepped once. I probably travel at 105 to 110 mph with my driver on average.

They are both stepped shafts, so they don’t feel all that different. Even though they launch high, KBSs spin a little less, so they are still reasonably good into the wind.

So now you know the significant differences, and in this article, we dig this topic deeper and discuss everything you need to know about these two shafts, helping you choose the better one for playing better golf. Welcome to SporticMedia .

Table of Contents

What is the difference between the kbs tour 120 and the s300.

The KBS Tour 120 and the S300 stand out as two highly sought-after steel iron shafts renowned for their durability, performance, and feel. While both cater to golfers seeking excellence, nuanced differences can guide your choice.

The KBS Tour 120, at 120g, boasts a slightly lighter and softer profile compared to the S300. With a mid-to-low launch and low spin, it facilitates a penetrating ball flight, making it an optimal choice for those aiming to control their trajectory. The crisp and firm feel further appeals to golfers who swing aggressively or contend with excess spin.

In contrast, the S300, weighing 125g, leans towards a heavier and stiffer configuration. Featuring a medium launch and spin, it promotes a higher ball flight with increased spin. This renders it suitable for golfers desiring added height in their shots or requiring enhanced stopping power on the green. The smooth and soft feel contributes to an overall comfortable experience during play.

To summarize:

While these comparisons provide insights, the most accurate choice stems from a professional club fitting. By analyzing your unique swing dynamics, a clubfitter can recommend the ideal shaft to optimize your performance on the course.

What is my experience on KBS Tour 120 Vs. DG S300?

KBS Tour 120 Vs. S300; Comparison By Sportic Media

The KBS 120 and the regular DGS300 have seen a lot of use. Both are excellent shafts, but the weight, feel, and distance are very different for me. I feel much lighter with the KBS 120 shaft than the DGS 300 shaft, and I am longer with it (about half a club).

The shaft feels the most different based on the weight difference, even though the shaft profile differs. If you’ve demoed a lot of iron shafts and like the KBS 120 shaft, you might also consider the DGS300 120 and Nippon Modus 120 shafts that LSMO mentioned.

What is KBS Tour 120?

KBS Tour120 shaft is designed for golfers who want shot versatility with a mid trajectory, piercing flight, and smooth overall feel. The KBS Tour shaft, which incorporates recognizable KBS technology, maximizes energy transfer within a clever shaft design for better trajectory and shot control.

Price comparison: KBS tour 120 vs. S300.

The KBS tour 120 is around 34$, and the S300 is just around 25$ without the shipping costs. So when we compare the prices, you know the S300 will be a better choice if you are running on a low budget or are just a beginner and still learning golf.

What are the specs of the KBS Tour 120 shaft?

Several of the best ball-strikers in the world who value feel and workability favor the KBS TOUR shaft on the Tour. The KBS TOUR shaft, which comes in five flexes and weighs between 110g and 130g, is designed to fit a variety of players.

KBS Tour 120 Vs. S300

What is the DGS300 shaft?

All other shafts are compared to the Dynamic Gold Family, the Gold Standard. Dynamic Gold uses variable wall technology and a step pattern successfully used on the Tour for the best performance for serious golfers.

This high-flex, tour-weight shaft is made for skilled players seeking a low, penetrating ball flight for the best possible control and accuracy.

What are the specs of the DGS300 shaft?

  • Weight : 124-137g
  • Launch : High
  • Butt : .600″
  • Length : 40.00″ – 36.50″

What flex are S300 shafts?

Anything that weighs more or less than 130 grams is considered to be a lighter (S200) or heavier (S400) version, with S300 serving as the “standard” stiff flex.

What is the difference between Dynamic Gold S200 and S300?

The S300 has a high launch angle, while the S200 has a low one. The primary distinction between these launch angles is that one will increase your height while the other will increase your distance.

Some related FAQs.

What is the lightest kbs shaft.

The KBS TOUR 90, the lightest shaft in the KBS product line, is made for players looking for maximum distance, increased spin, and higher trajectory.  Due to the 20% lighter weight of the KBS TOUR 90 compared to standard shafts, swing and ball speeds are ultimately accelerated.

What is the heaviest KBS shaft?

There are six distinct models of the KBS Tour steel shaft. The KBS Tour comes in weights and flexes of 110 grams regular, 115 grams regular+, 120 grams stiff, 125 grams stiff+, and 130 grams x-stiff.

Is S200 stiffer than S300?

There only seems to be one flex option available for the S300, which is stiff. If you already use a stiff flex shaft, this won’t be a problem. However, the S300 won’t have the options you’re used to if you’re used to regular or extra stiffness.

What shafts do pros use?

For their drivers, fairway woods, and hybrid clubs, all 100 of the top players on the PGA Tour use graphite shafts. While 21 professionals use steel, 14 of the top 100 golfers use graphite shafts in their utility irons.

Which iron shaft is best for me?

Your swing type will determine which flex rating you use. For instance, those who are just starting or have weaker swings often use a shaft with more flexibility to increase ball propulsion.  On the other hand, a player who has a quick and powerful swing will need a shaft that is stiffer and less flexible.

  • These are design specifications that may vary due to manufacturing tolerances.
  • Lie angle is based on Black Color Code at standard length.
  • Power Spec Loft is a fitting option for players looking to boost their iron distance or decrease spin to hit a desired trajectory window. This custom-designed loft configuration delivers a calculated power boost without sacrificing the integrity of the club’s design.
  • Retro Spec Loft is a fitting option if you’re less concerned with overall distance and more with precision and a higher trajectory for more stopping power. This loft configuration yields functional distance gaps for utilizing a 3-wedge setup or a more classic loft spec.
  • Club bounce angles will vary slightly if ordered with non-standard loft specs.

Blueprint T Shafts

PING offers a variety of shaft flexes in steel and graphite to meet your needs and preferences. Selecting the proper shaft flex for your swing will help you get the most distance and accuracy from every shot. Generally, players with faster swing speeds require stiffer shafts to keep the ball trajectory lower, while players with slower swing speeds will require more-flexible shafts to produce a higher ball trajectory.

The choice of steel or graphite shafts is usually based on preferences for weight and/or feel. Players seeking a lighter overall weight and/or a softer feel in their irons may prefer graphite shafts, while players who prefer a standard-weight club with a firmer feel may prefer steel shafts.

We recommend that you get fit for the shaft that allows you to play your best golf. Whether that’s a softer, lighter shaft with a higher launch or a heavier, stiffer shaft with a lower trajectory, a PING Certified Club Fitter can help you find the shaft that brings consistency to your game.

  • Shaft weights listed are based on the trimmed length of a 7-iron and may not match the specs on the shaft manufacturer’s websites.
  • Graphite shafts are not available for the Blueprint T.

Blueprint T Grips

PING offers a variety of grip sizes and styles to fit different hand sizes and texture preferences. Since grip size influences your wrist action, and therefore the direction of your shots, it is commonly used by fitters to affect ball flight.

PING color-coded grips are available in six different diameters, and can be further customized with grip tape according to your needs. Once the neutral grip color code has been determined based on hand measurements, golfers may consider smaller diameter grips to help control fades and slices, or larger diameter grips to help control draws and hooks.

  • 3 weeks later...

I played s300 120 gram before modus 120 stiff. I’m definitely getting more height with the modus and better dispersion.

Modus 120 feels livelier. Probably because of its bend profile. I’m not that knowledge about profiles but it goes feel smoother without loss of accuracy for me.

Thanks for the input. Picked up some $taper 120 as well. Re-shafted a single iron and it was definitely higher. Now I have paralysis by analysis 😩

I haven't played the $ Taper but played the C Taper 120 years ago and felt they were very stiff and had a really low ball flight. I'm not sure of the differences between the 'C' and '$' but I play the Modus 120 now and it is a very unique profile. Very high kick point which MANY confuse with "soft to flex". The tip section on the modus 120 is very stiff. If you take a look, there are no steps for a good portion of the shaft up from the head. The flex all takes place up by the hands which, for my swing, allows me to load the shaft well at moderate swing speed but get back to square. My dispersion is the best with Modus and I've tried a number of others (recoil 110, DG 120 and 105) and always end up back at Modus 120.

Like

I was wondering if the dispersion was better with Modus. I’m all over the planet with the DGS 120. The $ taper are much better feeling than the C taper but I’ve only put it in one club. Looks like I have a thanksgiving weekend project.

The $ tapers are less "board like" and it doesnt feel like youre swinging a steel rod.

Mostly PING clubs, with TaylorMade woods.

Ball flight on these two shafts will be totally dependent on how you load the shaft. I think (dont know for sure) that the modus has a softer butt and stiffer tip than $taper. How you respond to the butt feeling of each will really determine which flights higher.

I've been in the $taper 120s for over a year and I love them. I hated that noodle feel of the modus.

Just to confuse myself, I hit some Project X LZ 6.0. Kinda liked the feel, ball height was OK too.

The Modus 120 will have a similar feel. I found the the LZ shaft felt like it hinged at the micro steps rather than more of a even bending/flexing sensation I get from Modus 120.

I tried all the shafts you mentioned above including DG S120 which I feel is more demanding (tip stiff) compared to the regular DG S300.

Modus 120 (my current gamer) is the best in feel and performance. You can swing this for 18 holes and you won't feel tired at all. It was a bit light for me in the beginning as I was coming from DG S300 but once you get used to the weight it is the best performing shaft for me personally. Best ball flight and the ball lands gently as if it is landing with a parachute.

KBS $ Taper came is at a close second. Ball flight is quite similar to Modus 120. A hair lower but unless you are playing in the profession PGA you won't really care about the minor difference. Feel wise, very good. But not as good as Modus 120. Dispersion is a bit tighter with this but I think $ Taper is a hair bit more demanding than Modus 120. Not that it is a difficult shaft. I am just highlighting minor details that I have noticed.

Project X LZ was my least favorite. Didn't like the (hollow??) feel and it gave the most spin out of the 3. I guess if I used Project X on my irons I could consider the LZs but definitely not for me for irons.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have more questions.

Modus for sure.

Just played 9 holes with a few clubs shafted with $-taper. Not the shaft for me. As ivgynonc said, Modus for sure 😁

I have played both the $ taper and Mod 120 and my thoughts  exactly.  Plus the Mods should be cheaper by like $20 a shaft.

Something no one has mentioned is the weight. Modus 120’s are very light for a 120 shaft, 114 g untrimmed vs 120 g.

I discovered that when trying Srixon ZX7 irons. The modus was light compared to $-Taper and Project X LZ 120.

I'm the opposite.  Switched from KBS 120 Tour to Modus and it just ballooned.  Came up short on every swing.  I went to the $-Taper and am in love.  I think the $-Taper feels very similar to original 120 tours, just with better dispersion.

I don't have trouble with height though.   Everyone has the perfect shaft.  You just have to find it.

I had the same experience as you. From KBS Tour 120, I couldn't adjust to the Modus 120. It was if I was hitting a toothpick, though dispersion was very good.

I know I’ve posted on this elsewhere but I’ve recently purchased two new sets of irons (one with Modus 120S and one with KBS $ Taper 120S) and reckon these shafts couldn’t be more different.

If I look at the ExactGolf website, they have the Modus 120 as very soft & flexible with the $ Taper 120 as incredibly stiff, some of the stiffest shafts you can get. Obviously the profiles are also very different.

They are suggesting that $ Taper is only for the fastest swing speeds.

As for me, I am finding the $ Taper really hard work but my dispersion is really good, both distance and accuracy. The Modus almost seems too flexible after it and my dispersion seems to have disappeared (left / right) since my fitting (which told me Modus), maybe because I’ve been hitting the $ Taper…

Anyone here getting on with the $ Taper if they have 100mph driver / 82mph 7-iron level swing speed?

Bit confused at moment.

Hey Stoney.  I have been playing the Hot Metal Pros with PX LZ 5.5 the last two months and hate it. It has way too much of a whip and kick in the downswing and I can’t stand it. I have a chance to swap out for the modus 120 S. Do you think this would be better as far as having less of that loading kick at impact compared to LZs 5.5? Thanks for any input.

My thoughts are that it will feel similar but different. The modus and LZ felt a lot a like to me with the exception of where I felt the bend point. The modus feels like it’s loading right below the grip and the LZ felt more like the middle of the club. You may like the feel of the modus better but it’s pretty polarizing. Most either really like or really hate. In my opinion, neither the LZ or the Modus feel “one piece”. Going from a 5.5 LZ to the modus 120 though, you may like the stiff tip section of the modus better. I would definitely swing any club with the modus before making that commitment for your whole set of irons.

Thanks

This is where I’m at exactly. I’ve been blowing my mind out over the issue. Fittings told me c taper lite or modus 105 but when I personally look at the date a x100 or c taper x is dead freaking on.

so I think the $ taper would be what I need but fitters say otherwise. Why is this?

I’ve had both $-Taper and Modus 120’s. Prefer the feel and ball flight of the Modus.  Nice high ball flight on both. Just my non professional impression, but the bend profile on the $ Tapers felt very even thru the whole shaft versus a higher bend point with a kick at the bottom in the Modus. Seemed like I was losing distance with the $Tapers. Different club heads though so who knows?

I’ve played most of the KBS shafts.  Last two iron sets have been $-Taper 120 Stiff.  Wedges Tour V Wedge 125 Stiff

The main standard weight shafts can be summed up as follows:

Tour-high flight & mid spin

$-Taper-Mid flight & less spin

Tour V- Low/mid & tight dispersion

C-Taper- Low Launch & Spin

The Lite versions (i.e. $-Taper Lite) of all the above reduce shaft weight and add height and spin.

The KBS graphite iron shafts are similar:

Max - Highest and most spin

PGI - High and mid/high spin

TGI - Mid height and mid spin.

My driver ss is 108, 7i is 88.  I just switched to $ Tapers from C Tapers.  As of now i do not care for the $ Tapers.  Hit the Modus 120 stiffs today with a couple different heads and they felt very easy to swing.  Dispersion was better as well.

KBS Tour V Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

kbs tour 120 stiff specs

If you were a fan of the KBS Tour shafts but found them to be a bit too heavy or too stout for your swing then the KBS Tour V shaft should definitely be on your radar.

The KBS Tour V was specifically designed to perform as close as the KBS Tour shafts as possible while at the same time being lighter.

The KBS Tour V promises tight shot dispersion through muted spin and of course, the classic feel and performance of the original KBS Tour shafts. So does it deliver? Find out in the following review!

KBS Tour V Shaft Overview

The aesthetics of the KBS Tour V shaft is very on-brand for the company.

You get the almost obligatory polished chrome finish with the red band in the middle containing all the lettering. And like most KBS shafts, the KBS Tour V is a stepped steel shaft. So the looks aren’t anything special; but they will certainly appeal to you if you prefer the look of a traditional iron shaft.

Overall the feel of the KBS Tour V is more muted than the KBS Tour. There isn’t as much response in it. That doesn’t mean it feels stout. In fact, the KBS Tour V shaft feels much more manageable than the KBS Tour. But there is certainly a lack of feedback in it. The kick point is very hard to suss out unless you take a powerful swing. Then, you can feel it just under the grip.

Still, the transition is very smooth. You can barely feel the shaft release; but you know it’s happening because you get really good ball and club head speed with this shaft. Of course, a lot of the enhanced club head/ball speed will depend on how you swing your irons. For our testing group though, the numbers told the story. Almost all of us were seeing increases over our typical ball/club head speed numbers. The proof is in the pudding as they say.

In the end, we would say that the KBS Tour V favors a more aggressive tempo but it still plays nice with a more deliberate tempo as well. In both cases, you are likely to achieve a nice arcing draw and increased carry and rollout.

Why is the KBS Tour V So Popular?

kbs tour 120 stiff specs

The KBS Tour V owes a lot of its popularity to the original KBS Tour shaft and the KBS C-Taper shafts.

These are actually more popular than the KBS Tour V; but their success has prompted a lot of people to take a look at the lighter KBS Tour V.

How Does the KBS Tour V Perform?

After our test session, we concluded that the most beneficial thing about the KBS Tour V is distance.

Yes, we were increasing our ball and club head speed with this shaft and yes, that meant better carry. But there are a couple of other dynamics at play here. First of all, the KBS Tour V absolutely delivers on its promise of low spin. Sidespin is muted marvelously so that you get tighter dispersion and good rollout distance.

Secondly, the KBS Tour V is advertised as a mid launching shaft but we saw mostly high-arcing shots in our test session. The higher launch gave most of our testers better overall carry. So when you combine higher launch, muted sidespin and good rollout, you end up with an iron shaft that plays pretty long.

Of course, there is always the concern that low spin will produce too much rollout and that was certainly on our mind during testing. And in fact, some of us did roll off the green and into the weeds. But if you want to limit the amount of irons you need to get greenside, the KBS Tour V is at least worth a look.

KBS Tour V Shaft Specs

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

Regular flex is available for players in the 80-85 MPH swing speed category.

Stiff is a good choice for 86-90 MPH swingers and extra stiff would suit players in the 91-105 MPH range.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

The 100g version is good for players in the 80-90 MPH range.

The 110g version may suit 91-95 MPH swingers and the 120g version would be good for players in the 96-105 swing speed spectrum.

Why is it So Good?

The KBS Tour V is a good shaft because it allows players with less aggressive tempos to get the distance help they need on the fairway.

KBS Tour V First Impressions

kbs tour 120 stiff specs

Our first impression was that the KBS Tour V looked like any other KBS shaft.

But when we swung it, we could feel that it actually had less feedback.

Key Features & Performance

The KBS Tour V features large outer diameters and a stiff tip in order to reduce side spin and enhance stability on full swings.

KBS Tour V Irons Review

Like almost all KBS shafts, the KBS Tour V are very stable and accurate – even on your full swings with the long irons. Dispersion is tight as promised and distance is outstanding.

KBS Tour V Wedges Review

The KBS Tour V wasn’t as great in our wedges. The lack of spin made it hard to stay on fast, elevated greens.

KBS Tour V Pros & Cons

  • Very accurate
  • Good for moderate and fast tempos
  • Feels stable on full swings
  • Great distance
  • Classic KBS looks
  • Limited feedback

Overall Score: 95/100

Check out more reviews here:.

Shop_Now

Who Should Buy it?

Muted spin? Check! Tight dispersion? Check! Classic KBS feel? Not so much.

The lack of clear feedback was our biggest gripe about this shaft. Some players may also have issues with excessive rollout. Nevertheless, the KBS Tour V is a great distance iron shaft and it is as accurate as promised.

Whereas a typical steel shaft may sting a bit, the Tour seems to absorb the blow more. Don't get me wrong, if you hit your MP-18 MB wrong, you're still going to pay for it in the hands.

  24. KBS Tour V Shaft Review

But there are a couple of other dynamics at play here. First of all, the KBS Tour V absolutely delivers on its promise of low spin.
