What is the old Jewish town near Barcelona?

The old Jewish town near Barcelona is actually right within the city itself, located in its bustling heart. Known as “El Call,” it’s Barcelona’s historic Jewish quarter, a hidden gem with centuries of history etched into its narrow lanes and timeworn buildings.

Originally established in the 12th century, El Call was home to one of the most significant Jewish communities in Medieval Europe. Its name derives from the Hebrew word ‘Kahal,’ meaning ‘community’ or ‘assembly.’ In Catalan, it is simply referred to as ‘Call,’ signifying ‘street’ or ‘passage.’

This neighborhood is an absolute wonder for history and architecture buffs. It’s a maze of winding, narrow streets filled with a fascinating blend of Gothic and Medieval buildings.

Walking through El Call, you’ll stumble upon architectural marvels like the Ancient Synagogue of Barcelona, believed to be one of the oldest in Europe, and the ‘Mikveh’ medieval-era ceremonial bath. Time in El Call feels like a whisper from the past, a truly immersive experience in Barcelona’s rich Jewish heritage.

What is the name of the Jewish Quarter Barcelona?

The Jewish Quarter in Barcelona is known as “El Call”. It’s a name that’s both straightforward and steeped in rich historical significance, reflecting the area’s deep Jewish roots. For example, in the Middle Ages, El Call was the epicenter of Jewish life in Barcelona.

At the time, the area was bustling with scholars, merchants, and artisans. A walk through El Call today feels like stepping back in time, with its narrow winding streets, ancient stone buildings, and remnants of a vibrant Jewish community that once thrived here.

The quarter is home to notable sites such as the Sinagoga Mayor, one of the oldest synagogues in Europe, and, as mentioned, the ‘Mikveh’. In El Call, every corner holds a piece of the past, whispering tales of a time long gone yet preserved in the heart of Barcelona.

For anyone interested in history and especially for anyone part of or with links to the Jewish community, don’t forget to add El Call to your Barcelona itinerary. It’s truly a historic treasure trove that’s not always on every tourist’s Barcelona itinerary.

Exploring The Jewish Heritage In Barcelona

Jewish sites in barcelona that you need to know about.

The Barcelona Jewish Quarter was attacked and destroyed in 1391,  already 100 years before the Inquisition. This is the main reason why there aren’t many visually attractive elements left from our middle ages. However, if you are interested in what’s left of the Jewish heritage in Barcelona and you have an interest in history of the Jews in Barcelona, you’ll be able to retrace the steps back to the times when the “Call” or Barcelona Jewish Quarter was in its full bloom.

Here are the Jewish sites in Barcelona selected for you:

Medieval synagogue.

Despite not much more than its walls has been preserved, its history is fascinating. The antiques and artwork decorating it are donations. It is a main stop of all our Tours of the Barcelona Jewish Quarter .

Interpretation Center of the Call

The Museum of History of Barcelona opened in this house where a medieval weaver lived, a center providing information about the history of the area and the Jewish Heritage in Barcelona. See maps of the area, a small collection of medieval Jewish ceramic and a couple of Hebrew tombstones.

Jewish book in the Barcelona Jewish Quarter

Remains of a possible Mikhva in a shop in c/Palla

If you ask permission first, at the Olivé store they’ll let you walk to the end of their shop where have been preserved a few columns and arches that might have been part of the structure of the medieval Mikhva of the Barcelona Jewish Quarter. Despite the documents locating it in that area, historians haven’t confirmed yet this theory though.

Hebrew inscription in c/Marlet

During the demolition of a building in 1920, they found this medieval inscription remembering the rabbi Samuel Hassardí. The experts haven’t agreed on what would be its right translation, as it seems to be written in a quite cryptic way…

This was just a quick list of sites and their basic description, but there is more to that! Make sure to take one of the  tours of the Barcelona Jewish Quarter  to learn more about the Jewish heritage in Barcelona.

Inscription in Carrer Marlet, one of theTop Jewish sites in Barcelona:

explanation

Hebrew Tombstones in Plaça Sant Iu

After the Jewish cemetery in the hill of Montjuïc was abandoned, some tombstones near the stone quarries where used to build buildings in the Gothic Quarter. If you look around, you might be able to discover a bunch of them in one of the walls of this tiny plaza beside the Cathedral.

AND BONUS! Here is one last place to get immersed in the Jewish history of Barcelona:

Museum of History of the City

The best part of the visit of the  Museum of History  is the underground Roman ruins, and if you pay attention you’ll discover there some Jewish tombstones embedded in the walls. And then, in the Medieval Section you’ll find some cages with objects to learn more about the Jewish Heritage in Barcelona.

Hi Malka! Well… that depends on how updated are you on the local Jewish history… The Museum of History of the Jewish of Girona uncovered what seems to be the remains of their Mikhva, but it’s already been a couple of years since it was added to their museum visitable area… And there’s history lovers who keep doing research and publishing articles about their findings on the medieval and more recent (1800 and early 1900s) local Jewish History. "I highly recommend taking a tour with Adi. He is a great storyteller with a heartwarming personality! Fascinating history that is most certainly missed without a tour guide"
"My 19 year old daughter and I both loved our tour with Adi! Adi knows his history and Barcelona. He shared his knowledge with warmth and humour. We toured the old Jewish ghetto, saw the remains of a 700 year-old synogogue, wandered through hard-to-find alleys and saw giant Roman pillars hidden in a small courtyard. It was a part of the city we would never have been able to fully appreciate without him. I highly Adi’s tour!"
"The Jewish Quarter tour of Barcelona given by Adi was most informative. He had an in depth knowledge of the area. I learned a great deal about the Jews time in Barcelona over the centuries. Adi was an excellent tour guide and provided intimate knowledge of Jewish Barcelona."

Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City

The Museum of Jewish Heritage is hosting free tours for 8th graders

The museum is trying to combat a rising tide of antisemitism.

Anna Rahmanan

Earlier this week, the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust at 36 Battery Park in downtown Manhattan announced the debut of a new program that seeks to fight the rising tide of antisemitism across the city. Over the new three years, starting this fall, the cultural institution will host free tours for up to 85,000 8th grade students at NYC public schools and charter schools. Given that the city's school district is the largest in the nation, this is a pretty big deal.

The idea was first raised by City Council member Julie Menin after the October 7 attacks on Israel. According to NYPD data , since then, Jews have been the target of 62% of all hate crimes in the city. What's more, antisemitic acts of violence have risen by 45% in 2024 compared to last year, reports the New York Post . Clearly, there's room for education.

"We needed a proactive approach to combat this hatred at its roots," Menin, who is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, said in an official statement. "That’s why I approached the Museum of Jewish Heritage with the vision of a universal field trip program."

We needed a proactive approach to combat this hatred at its roots.

The decision to target 8th grade students follows current guidelines that require local schools to teach about the Holocaust through an explicit curriculum that starts that year.

The new program is a pretty hefty effort that, according to NBC , will cost around $2.5 million, a figure that makes sense considering that students will be granted transportation, guides and take-home materials to look through in addition to the actual guided tours that "will focus on the global history of antisemitism and propaganda that precipitated the Holocaust, as well as offering an experience for students to reflect on current events."

As for which schools will participate in the project, it will be up to the institutions themselves. They will be able to sign up through the museum's website.

The Museum of Jewish Heritage is not the only one doubling down on its efforts to provide a safe haven for Jews by educating the general public about the perils of antisemitism and general hatred. In fact, earlier this week, the Jewish Children's Museum in Crown Heights hosted an event celebrating its mission throughout the past 19 years.

The only way to combat the raging antisemitism we see across New York City is through educating our children.

"The only way to combat the raging antisemitism we see across New York City is through educating our children and the Jewish Children’s Museum has been at the forefront of this for two decades," said Devorah Halberstam, the Museum’s director of external affairs, in an official statement. "We’re going to redouble our efforts to familiarize New York City’s youth with Jewish life, history and culture, promoting a spirit of acceptance and understanding."

Given the current status of affairs, the various initiatives feel heart warming and necessary. Here's to hoping that they will actually make a change.

Barcelona is a city rich in Jewish history that dates back to over 1,700 years ago. When exactly the first Jews arrived to Spain is an ongoing discussion among historians. It is widely believed that the first Jewish presence was around the 3rd Century (BCE). Over the centuries, the Jewish population in Barcelona grew steadily in numbers as well as in their political and religious significance. They lived in relative peace until 1391 when there was a brutal attack on the Jewish community, resulting in a dramatic end to the presence of Jews in Barcelona that would not see a reversal until the 20th Century.

During our tour we will bring back to life the story of the Jews here in Barcelona and show just how important Jewish people were to the city’s development and history.

What is the difference between the Jewish tour and the weekly Jewish tour?

The main difference between the Jewish Tour and the Weekly Jewish Tour is the number of participants: the Weekly Jewish Tour is a group tour whereas the Jewish Tour is a private one.

Are all the guides Jewish?

We want to make sure you have the best experience, and hence we ensure that all of our guides are extremely knowledgeable of the tour content. However, in order to visit the Gaudi monuments, the City Hall of Barcelona requires us to hire specific, special certified tour guides. We cannot assure that these guides will be Jewish.
