An InterView with Jeremiah Kane By Karolina Kratochwil (KaroK)

Poland’s Jeremiah Kane is certainly and outstanding entity when it comes to both scenic representation and the intriguing brand of “Samurai Street Rock” the band performs. Combining the elements of metal, electronics, and Japanese motifs, the group achieves a singular and quite intriguing result that stands apart from the current trends of the genre. Signing to NoCut Entertainment for this year’s release of Ronin , which features both energetic sparks and fragile soundscapes, the band has managed to achieve a new level of artistic expression. In this special contribution from Karolina Kratochwil, Jeremiah Kane’s founder and namesake speaks about live concerts, new releases, music videos, collaborations, and the applications of Bushido code in the modern world.

I believe I had a chance to see you performing live this year at Castle Party in Poland. Your shows are compelling, energetic, and profound, and you also have a specific scenic look. Could you tell me more about the idea behind Jeremiah Kane and how it is represented during live performances?

What were the beginnings of Jeremiah Kane? When and how was the band formed? Do you all come from the same musical background?

Kane : Jeremiah Kane started first as my solo project back in 2017 as I wanted to try creating alone electronic music inspired by ’80s sounds and style after a few failed bands. I was really into listening to synthwave back then, and I wanted to try to make similar music as well. As I wanted to progress and expand, both in music creation and during live shows, I invited my friend Vincent to co-create music with me. Apart from us, we have our two friends – Chris, who plays bass guitar, and Jacob, who plays the drums – both of whom join us during live shows and other band related activities. Each one of us has some experience in playing in a band before Jeremiah Kane, so I guess I will never truly escape playing in a band.

‘Samurai Street Rock,’ I guess is the term you created. In your music, you combine the classic rock/metal element with invigorating electronics and Asian motifs. How would you yourselves describe your music, and where do you take inspiration from?

Kane : Yes, I created this term to describe both visual and sound style of what we are creating. It’s hard for me to find the typical term for the music that we make, as we try to make each release different from the previous one; the same applies to every song we make. We really like to blend various styles of electronic music with heavy guitar sounds. If we would need to describe where does our inspiration comes from, it’s usually the music we listen to, movies, and the overall Japanese pop culture. I often go for a long night driving in my cars, either alone or with friends, to find inspiration.

Ronin was released in 2022. The Japanese concepts and ideas seem close to you. Could you tell me more about the release and the album’s background?

Tell me about the collaborations on the album. I believe you mentioned Julian Larre from Lacrimas Profundere, ex-Groovenom singer SANZ, Prexss, and Alen Ljubić?

Kane : Ronin is the first album in which we incorporated more songs with vocals as we wanted to experiment with the overall sound. As we worked to make each song unique, for each vocal song, we introduced different singers that would suit best the mood and tone of the song. It was something new for us as we are mainly an instrumental band, so we had to look up and find help to find the best vocalists. We asked our producer and label and that’s how we gathered the crew you mentioned in the question. All of them made an outstanding job and we are grateful for their contribution to the album.

Some elements we traditionally associated with Japanese music are also present in some fragments on Ronin , like on ‘Kanjozoku’ or ‘Bushido.’ Where is this interest in Japan coming from?

Kane : Well, as kids, we watched a lot of Japanese anime series, mainly Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z . That’s where our interest was born. Some of us are more into Japanese media like manga or anime; others appreciate the cultural aspects of Japan, and I am really into Japanese music and car culture. There is something truly unique in everything that is created in Japan, and we want to show all those sides in our music.

Are the ideas behind the Samurai code close to you? Is it even possible to apply the rules in the modern world?

How would you say you have progressed musically since All or Nothing was released in 2018?

The covers of your albums bring manga or cartoons to one’s mind, while the others may bring associations with Blade Runner or The Fifth Element . Who is the artist responsible for your artwork?

Kane : There were various artists who created the cover arts for our releases. It depends on what mood the song is, and which artist would be the best to create an artwork that perfectly describes what the song’s premise is about. We constantly look up for some new artists to consider, so we can make each release visually unique.

To what extent signing with NoCut Entertainment changed your creative process? Has it changed it at all?

Kane : It didn’t change at all. I could say that it opened our eyes to some new aspects in songwriting and gave us new possibilities, but overall, we are still 100% independent. We receive great support from our label, and we are grateful for that.

Tell me about the making of your ‘Wild Child’ and ‘Lights Out’ videos. I believe the latter was filmed at Pyrkon. Are you planning any new ones?

What can we expect next from your end?

Kane : Lots of new things will come up from Jeremiah Kane. We are organizing the biggest live tour we’ve ever done. We want to visit as many places as possible in Europe. Also, we’re working on some new songs here and there, and social media projects are coming up, so we won’t stay silent anytime soon! Apart from all of that, we already started to gather new material for our next bigger release as Jeremiah Kane… we just can’t stand still!

Biography  [ ]

JEREMIAH KANE formed in 2017 from the initiative of Jeremiah Kane and initially was a solo synthwave project. The “Neoangeles” EP was released on 25.05.2017 with a full-length album “The New Dawn” shortly after in 2017 (15.11.2017).

The second album named “All or Nothing” was released on 25.10.2018 in cooperation with Vincy Kane, the former lead guitarist of the project, who joined the project initially to record guitar parts for the new album, but remained an active member along with live performances until his departure a few years later. In 2019 the duo focused on promoting the newest release in numerous venues in Europe, visiting countries such as Czechia, Ukraine, Hungary, Germany, Slovakia and Belgium.

In 2020 the band joined forces with bass player Chris Kane and announced a collaboration with music producer Kristian “Kohle” Kohlmannslehner (known from his work with bands such as Electric Callboy, Powerwolf or Hamatom) to work on their future material. This cooperation led to the release of singles “Never Back Down” and “Specter” on 06.03.2020 and 07.08.2020 respectively. Later the same year, on 30.10.2020 the band released “Never Back Down”’s remix created by BlazerJacket. In 2021 the band announced signing a contract with a German music label NoCut Entertainment and performed on the small stage of Castle Party Festival in Bolków, Poland.

In 2022 the band released their next album titled “Ronin” on the NoCut Entertainment label, which was received positively by music critics. After being joined by the drummer Jacob Kane, the band set out on a small tour promoting the newest full-length release. Jeremiah Kane performed on Pyrkon festival, on Copernicon and on the main stage of Castle Party, being invited again after their successful debut.

In early 2023 the lead guitarist Vincy Kane departed from the band for personal reasons, and was replaced by Theo Kane, staying in good contact with the rest of the band. With this new lineup, the band set out on an extensive tour around Poland, Germany, Czechia and Hungary. The band had the opportunity to play support shows for bands like Alestorm, Escape The Fate and Hanabie. Thanks to the votes of the audience, the band was able to perform again at the Pyrkon festival.

Musical style and influences [ ]

The band was described as a mixture of electronic music and guitar-driven rock, including many references to the 1980's pop culture and retro video games in their tracks. Their new releases (starting from Never Back Down ) feature heavier approach to music, featuring more distorted guitars and influences from electronic music genres such as Drum 'n' Bass, Dubstep and Trance.

The band members themselves have stated that they are influenced by a wide variety of artists such as  The Gazette , Girugamesh , and Parkway Drive . [1]

Jelly Roll Says He's Having Issues Booking an International Tour Due to His Felonies: 'We're Working on That'

Jelly Roll

Jelly Roll is opening up about the difficulties he's facing as an artist with convictions as he tries launching an international tour.

Jelly Roll  may be one of the biggest names in music at the moment, but that doesn't make him immune to some major struggles.

In a new sit-down with Jon Bon Jovi for Interview Magazine , the 39-year-old musician shared that as his team is working to take their act abroad for his millions of fans, they are encountering some difficulties due to his felony convictions.

"I'm so excited. We're figuring out the final pieces of some legal puzzles for me to get overseas," Jelly Roll told Bon Jovi, who responded with confusion. "Yeah. It's funny, America has finally agreed to let me leave and give me a passport, but some countries won't let me come because of my felonies."

Jelly Roll added, "We're working on that. I think it's going to work in my favor."

According to PassportsAndVisas.com , most charged and accused felons are able to obtain a passport, but there are certain restrictions in place under special circumstances. It's also well within a country's  right to deny entry to a U.S. felon. -- this includes major forces like Canada and the United Kingdom.

Bon Jovi, shocked by the statement from his musician peer, told Jelly Roll that he too is hopeful the issues get resolved. "I hope so. Those are really archaic rules. Entertainers should be able to go and do their job," the "It's My Life" singer, 62, said.

Humble as ever, Jelly Roll -- who has openly discussed his past issues with the law and drugs, even recently sitting before a Senate committee hearing on Capitol Hill to discuss the fentanyl crisis -- responded that he is just glad to be where he is already.

"For the record, I'm a kid from Antioch, Tennessee, whose father never left the southeastern region until he was in his 50s," he said, explaining how far he has already come in his life and his career.

"I don't think my father left New Jersey," Bon Jovi replied with a laugh.

It was just last month when Jelly Roll opened up about his convictions for the first time since quickly rising to fame. In total the singer says he has been to jail some 40 times over the years.

During a conversation on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the genre-bending singer discussed his aggravated robbery conviction, which occurred when he was just 16 years old. Despite being several years out from turning 18, he was tried as an adult and ended up serving more than a year in prison.

"We robbed a couple of guys for some weed," he admitted to Rogan, 56. "It was a heinous crime, admittedly ... it was an armed robbery, we went in there with a gun."

For that incident, he was also sentenced to seven years of probation.

As his fans know, it's his struggles that have led him to where he is today, topping the charts and making music that resonates with millions around the world.

At the 2024 ACM Awards in May -- after taking the stage to accept the award for Best Music Event along with his collaborator,  Lainey Wilson , for their song "Save Me" -- he gave a heartbreaking -- yet equally inspiring -- acceptance speech about how music saved his life.

"I thought I would die or go to jail and I'm standing here as an ACM Award winner," he said, visibly emotional from the win.

After thanking his fans and supporters, he popped backstage to  discuss with ET his emotional speech and why he was nearly moved to tears in the moment.

"I was so emotional because it saved me," he shared of their meaningful single. "'Save Me' was really the beginning of me finding my real voice and it was kind of me stepping out of my shell and being comfortable and just being open and vulnerable."

As for how he turned his life around after multiple stints in jail -- even welcoming his first child, Bailee Ann, while behind bars -- the singer has shared that it has been anything but easy to change his life. It was the arrival of his daughter in May 2008 that helped kick off his journey of turning over a new leaf.

"A guard knocks on my cell door midafternoon during lockdown," he recalled in an interview with  Billboard  last year. "He goes, 'You had a kid today.' I've never had nothing in life that urged me in the moment to know that I had to do something different. I have to figure this out right now."

Jelly Roll decided to get serious and get his GED, studying and passing the test on the first try, which he pointed to as a real turning point in his life. Since then, the artist has still dealt with ups and downs, but has used music to keep him on the right path through it all.

Another thing keeping him on the straight and narrow these days? His desire to have a baby with his wife, Bunnie XO , sometime in the near future.

During a recent episode of the  Bussin' With the Boys   podcast, he shared that they are undergoing IVF to try and expand their family. In addition to welcoming Bailee Ann in a previous relationship, the country singer is also dad to  Noah Buddy , 7, from another relationship.

"I think it was realizing that I just want to feel good," Jelly Roll said. "... My wife and I are talking about having a baby. And it really made me realize, at almost 40, I was like, 'That means I gotta live till at least 60. I gotta see this kid into college.'"

His kids are also a major motivation in his recent decision to lose weight, he said. Back in early May, ET spoke with the singer at the 2 Bears 5K, where he talked about his health journey and got emotional while discussing finishing the fun run.

"I couldn't walk a mile when I started trying to do this back in January," Jelly Roll said. "So the fact that we got 3-point-whatever it was, got it down, I felt really, really good about it."

As a new search sparks hope, the truth remains elusive in the case of missing man Jeremiah Rivers

a photo collage of a young indigenous man

The question of what happened to Jeremiah Rivers has been bouncing around outback communities in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia for two-and-a-half years.

These conversations canvass plenty of theories, but the sort of hard evidence that can produce reliable conclusions is conspicuously missing.

So in recent weeks when police revealed the search for the missing man had been restarted in a new location and was prompted by a fresh lead , there was a sense of anticipation and hope that closure may finally come to his family.

men on yellow police motorbikes through across a grassy plain.

The absence of truth has left a void of lies, conflicting stories, allegations of criminal behaviour and potential lost opportunities.

Meanwhile, an Indigenous family in the Kimberley remains overwhelmed by frustration, grief and their unfulfilled cultural obligation to lay their loved one to rest.

Lockdown-breaching road trip

So what do we know for certain about Jeremiah "Jayo" Rivers' last movements?

A group of seven began a pig-hunting trip in the southern New South Wales town of Balranald on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

There was Mr Rivers, a 27-year-old Gija man originally from the East Kimberley Indigenous community of Warmun.

With him was one of his closest friends, Jojo Kantilla. The pair were living in Balranald at the time to play Australian rules football.

Joining them was Matt Moore, who is from Balranald and had become friends with Jojo and Jayo.

Four men from Melbourne linked to Mr Moore — Travis Clare, Kane Toohey, Joel McMaster and Dylan Thomas — rounded out the group.

two men proudly show off a pig they have killed

They drove through outback New South Wales in a matter of days and entered illegally into Queensland, flouting COVID-19 border restrictions.

A photograph taken at 8.33am on Monday, October 18 shows Mr Rivers alive and with some of those in the party.

From that point he vanishes.

'Feast' of lies

A coronial inquest late last year heard from all six men plus the police officers involved in the initial search and investigation.

Queensland coroner Donald MacKenzie described the body of evidence provided to police by the hunting party as a "moveable feast of lies".

"I mean, these six witnesses, if any of them were to tell me that it was raining, I'd have to get counsel-assisting to go outside and have a look," he told the inquest.

In one account, the trip was a fun-filled adventure — a group of restless men, tired of COVID lockdowns, keen to hunt and fish through the outback while generously driving Mr Rivers and Mr Kantilla back home to Darwin.

In another version, the road trip was a means to transport tens of thousands of dollars worth of cannabis to Darwin and sell it at a lucrative price in Indigenous communities.

Family's theory of foul play

The drug trafficking, alleged by Jojo Kantilla at the inquest and told to police, was central to a theory put forward to the coroner by the legal team of Mr Rivers' family.

It's important to note it was a theory and just that. While police have been treating the case as suspicious, no-one has been charged.

A group of people hold up pictures of Jeremiah Rivers while standing in front of microphones

The family's lawyer, Stewart Levitt, suggested when Mr Rivers found out about the plan to sell cannabis during the trip he became upset, things got heated and the others turned against him.

And that Mr Clare and Mr Toohey, two men the inquest revealed had serious criminal records, were involved in the missing man's death , something they strenuously denied.

This theory relied heavily on a Facebook call Mr Rivers allegedly made during the trip to his friend Matthew Perris in Darwin.

Mr Perris told the inquest the call was a plea for help — Jayo had a fistfight with Jojo and felt the others were ganging up on him.

During the inquest the six men on the trip denied this and described Mr Rivers as largely being in good spirits throughout.

The coroner has made clear the Facebook call is of high importance to the case.

Walked away and never returned

The group's description of their last moments with Mr Rivers is what his family strenuously refuses to believe.

His companions say on the morning of Monday, October 18, 2021, the Gija man walked away from their campsite, looking for somewhere to swim and cool off.

When he didn't return they say they spent that day using their utes and quad bikes trying to find him.

That night two of the men went to the local pub to buy fish and chips but did not raise the alarm.

Police vehicle parked outside outback pub.

The men insist they thought Mr Rivers would return and feared going to authorities given they had broken COVID-19 border rules.

Mr Kantilla, in particular, came under scrutiny at the inquest for the inconsistencies in what he has told police, family members and the coronial hearing.

He said initially Mr Rivers went missing while chasing a pig and that it was just him, Mr Moore and Mr Rivers in their expedition.

Even his knowledge of the drug trafficking varies between accounts.

Mr Kantilla maintains he told lies in the aftermath because of the effects of ice and to protect his friends from border-rule penalties.

But Mr Rivers' family say there is another factor that gives them doubt.

They, along with authorities, have extensively searched the area of Channel Country in question near Noccundra, which is largely flat and sparsely vegetated.

His relatives believe his body must be somewhere else.

Concerns over police investigation

As well as the credibility of Mr Rivers' companions, questions remain over the quality and thoroughness of the investigation by police across multiple states.

Numerous aspects of the inquiry were scrutinised by Mr Levitt and the coroner during the inquest:

  • Should officers have detained the men in Queensland instead of letting them, as two separate groups, back across the border to regroup in NSW when it was obvious they had been flouting the law?
  • And why didn't Queensland police ask their NSW counterparts to search one of the travelling party's cars before it was driven back to Victoria?
  • And when Victorian detectives interviewed Mr Toohey and Mr Clare, why didn't they ask about the alleged drug trafficking?

a missing person's poster on a barb wire fence next to a dirt road

Mr Clare has spent almost two years evading Queensland police over a series of unrelated criminal matters, including allegations of domestic violence and drug possession.

Police told the inquest the investigation was hampered by the area's remoteness, lack of phone service, the risk of contracting COVID-19, conflicting stories by Mr Rivers' companions and challenges working across state borders.

On the most part they have defended their conduct as the best possible in difficult circumstances.

Family's pain persists

The ABC has been in regular contact with Mr Rivers' family members over the past two-and-a-half years and many say their grief and pain has only deepened.

Relatives have described sharp declines in their mental health and heartbroken children asking, "where's Jayo?" and "why isn't anyone looking for him?".

Months travelling to the Queensland outback and searching the landscape has drained their modest financial resources.

Uncle David Rivers said last week that he just wanted to bring Jayo home and bury him next to his grandfather.

And for his family to have some peace.

For now they are waiting, not only for the outcome of the search, but also for the coroner's findings in the hope they'll yield some truths so sorely missing in this case.

Tottenham confirm pre-season tour schedule as Harry Kane reunion awaits

Tottenham have now finalised plans for their pre-season tour of Asia this summer.

Spurs will face a potential reunion with former favourites Harry Kane and Eric Dier as they take on Bayern Munich , with that high-profile friendly now confirmed to be taking place at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea on August 3.

That game forms part of the Coupang Play Series, with Ange Postecoglou’s side first facing a Team K League lineup on July 31 at the same venue.

Tottenham’s Asia tour begins in Japan on July 27, when they meet J1 League champions Vissel Kobe at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo.

Spurs are due to face Bayern again at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Visit Malta Cup on August 10 in a homecoming for England captain Kane and Dier, a week before the 2024/25 Premier League season officially gets underway.

Postecoglou’s squad were recently in Melbourne, where they drew 1-1 with Newcastle in a somewhat controversial post-season friendly at the Melbourne Cricket Ground after James Maddison’s first-half opener was cancelled out by Alexander Isak before the break.

Tottenham went on to lose a penalty shootout against their Premier League rivals, with Bryan Gil’s effort crucially saved by Mark Gillespie as the Magpies prevailed 5-4 from the spot.

Spurs finished Postecoglou’s first season at the helm in fifth place to qualify for the Europa League, losing out to Aston Villa in a fierce battle for fourth and what proved to be the final Champions League slot after a difficult end to an eventful campaign that began with dreams of title contention after a superb start.

They will discover their first opponents for next term when the new Premier League fixtures are released on Tuesday, June 18.
