Japan - Nagano Highlands to the Sea Bike Tour

Why bicycle adventures.

We invite you to join our family. After 40 years of guiding extraordinary bicycle vacations, we have learned that bigger is not better. How do we know that? Easy… Our guests and guides tell us so. It’s the little things that small tours do that just aren’t possible with large group tours. Whether it’s getting to know everyone through shared conversation at dinner, choosing your dinner off the menu, staying in boutique accommodations or having your favorite post-ride refreshment waiting for you at the end of the day. But the best part is having guides that actually get to know you so that each trip feels like your own personalized vacation.

Bikers on the Palm Springs Joshua tour

Enthusiastic, knowledgeable guides, healthy lunches, fine dining, copious brew pubs, good wine lists, spectacular scenery and nearly ubiquitous van support!
A great way to experience a unique part of our world by leaving much of the planning and execution to a group of knowledgable, experienced, and helpful guides.
Great trip! Beautiful scenery, guides are very supportive and accommodating to the various levels of riders. Everyone is encouraged to ride to their comfort level.
It was a great introductory cycling trip for a family of 5 with ages ranging from 7 to 40+. All the kids made friends and loved being together.
It is an amazing way to explore a new place, the routes take to you to best spots, on the best roads, the guides are always there to make sure you are doing OK.

And at the end of each day, your kids will sleep like champs. Pedal your way through these family bike tours guaranteed to bring the excitement.

1/8 California Redwoods Family Multi-Adventure Tour

family bicycle trips

Courtesy of Backroads

It’s thrilling to pilot your bike through the California Redwoods, the tallest living things on the planet, some of which were alive before Christopher Columbus. After winding through the forest, break times will be spent playing on a wild beach, kayaking on a quiet lagoon teeming with wildlife, or wandering through the magnificent fern canyon that was used as a backdrop in Jurassic Park . At night, you’ll eat s’mores and swap stories around the campfire at the Albee Creek Campground (one of the Golden State’s best-kept secrets) and Patrick’s Point State Park, situated right by a bluff with epic views of the Pacific.

5 days, from $1999 per person. Backroads.com

2/8 Puglia Family Bike + Adventure Tour

family bicycle trips

Cycle southern Italy, eat incredible food and splash in the clear waters of the Adriatic Sea. Repeat. Sound like heaven? It is. On DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.’s tour of Puglia, you’ll pedal along Italy’s heel past dreamy coastal roads, sleepy fishing villages and sun-dappled olive groves. After a ride, stop to taste fresh-made mozzarella at a local farmhouse or snorkel through the ruins of the ancient city of Egnazia. Or swap your bikes for horses to take a sunset ride through the golden countryside near Otranto. In the evenings, you’ll eat homemade orrichiette pasta at local restaurants and bunk down in one of three accommodations: an elegant converted monastery, a sweet farmhouse hotel, and a trullo —one of the UNESCO-listed conical stone dwellings unique to Puglia.

6 days, from $4,495 per person. Duvine.com

3/8 Holland: Amsterdam to Odoorn

family bicycle trips

The Dutch own more bicycles per capita than any other country in the world, so your family will instantly fit in with the locals on this fun-filled trip from Austin Adventures. Cycling through Holland’s immaculate northern territory is a dream—the bike paths are pristine, well-marked and largely flat. Zoom past flower-filled meadows, dense forests and canals. Stops include a working windmill, a zoo and a famous Dutch pancake house in Odoorn (it may take a while to choose, as hundreds of pancake varieties are available). Hotels along the route are comfortable and kid-friendly—one even has four bowling alleys for a nighttime tournament.

7 days, from $2698 per person. Austinadventures.com

4/8 Mt Rushmore Family Tour

family bicycle trips

South Dakota’s gentle, ridiculously scenic Mickelson Trail is one of the country’s best paths—and Bicycle Adventures has put together an action-packed tour that will make grownups feel like kids again. When you’re not taking a leisurely spin past enormous grazing buffalo on the bikes, you’ll explore an active Wooly Mammoth dig, take in the grandeur of Mt Rushmore, hit a local waterslide and visit the mysterious Wind Cave, one of the longest in the world. After one ride, you can soak your road-weary muscles in a hot spring. The journey finishes up in Deadwood, notorious home of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Rest up in the Sylvan Lake Lodge, a classic since 1937.

6 days, from $2556 per person. Bicycleadventures.com

5/8 Derbyshire

family bicycle trips

Courtesy of Saddle Skedaddle

UK-based tour company Saddle Skedaddle offers the perfect cycling tour for first-timers: three days in the bucolic countryside of the Peak District National Park. Cruise along former railways that have been converted into traffic-free cycle paths such as the famous Tissington Trail, which winds through impossibly green hills dotted with sheep. In the evenings, you’ll turn in at Harrington Hall, a stately former 17 th century manor house.

3 days, from $480 per person. Skedaddle.com/us

6/8 Vietnam and Cambodia Family Adventure

family bicycle trips

Courtesy of Butterfield & Robinson

This bucket list journey from Butterfield & Robinson is the best of country and city. One day you’ll cycle through Hanoi’s bustling Old Quarter, passing Buddhist temples and the region’s famously narrow houses. On the next, you’ll traverse the quiet countryside through serene rice fields and over bamboo bridges. The tour culminates in a visit to the glorious temple of Angkor Wat. The kids will scarf up the mouthwatering cuisine in this corner of Asia (what’s not to like about noodles, rice and spring rolls?). It’s one of the many ways they’ll soak up a vibrant culture they’ll never forget. Hotels are unabashedly luxurious, such as Hoi An’s Anantara Resort, nestled in lush gardens on the Thu Bon River.

8 days, from $6995 per person. Butterfield.com

7/8 Vermont Family Trek

family bicycle trips

There’s a dreamlike quality to central Vermont. Whiz past quaint towns, placid cows munching grass and follow the meandering path of the Winooski River. After a long day on the bike, there are so many delicious ways to cool off: kayaking and paddle boarding on Lake Champlain, plunging into swimming holes, or splashing in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Elmore. Vermont has artisanal food galore, so you’ll also take the concept of farm-to-table to new heights with lunch at a local farm. One night, parents will enjoy dinner and some grownup chat at an award-winning bistro in Vergennes, while the guides keep the kids occupied.

6 days, from $2799 per person. Trektravel.com

8/8 Sud Tyrol Family

Glide past the spectacular Alpine landscape in one of the most beautiful bike paths in all of Europe.

family bicycle trips

Courtesy of Ciclisomo Classico

(a woman-owned bike company, which is still a rarity) has put together a magical itinerary to please everyone. Meander along the rolling Etch River Valley with its eye-popping view of the Alps before enjoying a bucolic picnic in the stunningly picturesque village of Oberbozen—all while surrounded by flaxen-maned Avelignesi horses. Gape at a 5300-year-old mummy named Otzi at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, go wind-surfing in the Lake Garda district and visit the Medieval castle of Roncolo. At night, you’ll collapse into a feather bed in an elegant mountain lodge.

Action packed itineraries

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So, we can plan a good mix of cycling time as well as opportunities to experience the local culture of a destination – and sometimes just a chance to kick back and relax by the hotel pool!

safety icon

Safety first

Our leaders are specially trained to run family and cycling adventures, so you’re well taken care of. A support vehicle will be with you, so you can take a break from riding whenever you feel like it. We also run risk assessments on all of our trips, and your leaders will have experience with the similar itineraries in advance.

Sustainable travel

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re travelling to improve the planet.

Morocco's Cave of Hercules

Visit the Caves of Hercules

If your kids like hearing ancient stories, riding to the Grottes d'Hercules or Caves of Hercules will be a perfect activity! Legend says that Hercules stayed in this cave before doing his eleventh labour – collecting the golden apples from the Hesperides Garden. Over the years, the caves have been used in many ways, including as a concert venue.

Nha Trang beach

Go snorkelling in Nha Trang

Take the opportunity to swap your bike for a boat and head out to explore the waters of Nha Trang. The kids can pass the day swimming and snorkelling in the turquoise waters, while parents can kick back on the deck or float around in the water with the kids. A fresh seafood buffet will be provided for lunch, so you’ll be able to refuel from all the riding of the past few days.

Chefchaouen

Rest your legs in the blue city, Chefchaouen

Take a break from all the cycling and explore the beauty of the northern Moroccan city of Chefchaouen on foot. Chefchaouen's medina is instantly recognisable with striking blue and whitewashed houses, red-tiled roofs – making it the perfect place for a memorable family photo. Ease into the relaxed pace of life in this rural retreat, perhaps booking in a family hammam treatment (traditional Moroccan spa) to help recover your riding muscles!

Khao Sok National Park

Explore Khao Sok National Park

Ride past stunning limestone karst mountains and greenery until you reach the nature lover’s paradise that is Khao Sok National Park. You’ll have plenty of time to explore this ancient wonderland, before falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle in a riverside bungalow. No matter your age, sleeping in a real-life jungle treehouse and a floating cabin are two accommodation experiences you’ll be bragging about for a while!

Where we stay

With Tailor-Made your accommodation is up to you. From basic, clean and comfortable to luxury, we can do it all. We aim to stay in places that showcase the local area and – for families – have pools.

10 Family-Friendly Bike Tours for Your Summer Vacation

We don’t know about you, but when we travel to a new city we want to get a fully immersive experience.  We don’t want to sit on a tour bus and watch the city pass by – we want to be a part of it!

However, being a part of the city with kids… well it can be tricky.  No doubt you have a lot of different places you want to go – different sites you want to see, restaurants you want to eat at, and pictures you want to take.  And while you could drive your car around all day, well it’s just not the same as walking amongst the locals.  But kids are notoriously terrible at walking around all day. So what’s a parent to do? We’ve got two words for you: BIKE TOURS.

Bike tours are guided (or sometimes self-guided) tours of cities that let you be a part of the city , learn the history, and bring the kids along without tiring their little tootsies.  Most bike tour companies offer kids’ sized bikes, tag-a-long bikes, bike trailers, and child bike seats so every member of the family can come along.  And rather than simply passing by beautiful sites in a car, or hopping off a bus to take a picture in front of a historical monument, a bike tour allows you to become a part of the city.

While there are seemingly limitless options for your bike tour needs, we’ve narrowed them down to a list of the top 10 family-friendly tours in the U.S. and Canada.

1. New York City

Bike tour of New York City in Central Park and on Brooklyn Water Front with downtown Manhattan skyline

New York, New York is a  wonderful  town… but it’s not exactly the first place you’d think, “Hey, what a great place to tour by bike with my kids!” Think again! Central Park is car-traffic-free, and a quintessential NYC landmark to explore by bike. Columbus Circle, the Bethesda Fountain, The Great Lawn, and Belvedere Castle are just a few of the famous spots you’ll pass (and can stop for photos)!

If you’re open to a little traffic, you can try out the Brooklyn Bridge Tour for stunning views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. You get to ride  over the bridge and along the waterfront in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Don’t worry – your littlest ones won’t be navigating the traffic alone – they’ll be connected to the parents by child bike seat, tag-along-bike, or trailer.

Bobby's Tike Hike Bike Tour in Chicago. Family riding along lakeside trail with Chicago skyline in the background, kids riding on trail in Lincoln Park

Chicago should be on your U.S. City Bucket List, and the summertime is the perfect time to visit. It’s one of those underrated cities that will make you think… “Why have I never been here before??”

From its extensive lakefront trail, free summer movies and concerts in Millenium Park, and sandy beaches on the shore of Lake Michigan, to Miracle Mile shopping, Chicago deep dish (Lou Malnati’s or Giordano’s… you decide) and Chicago dogs at Wrigley Field, Chicagoland is a summer paradise. It’s that big city energy with plenty of ways to get “outdoors”.

So after you enjoy a morning at the beach, hop on those bikes and explore more of the city! Bobby’s Bike Hike has a tour everyday at 2:30 that’s completely catered to kids. The 4.5 mile Bobby’s Tike Hike will take your family along the shore and into the fabulous neighborhood of Lincoln Park. You’ll even get to check out the (free!) Lincoln Park Zoo.

3. Vancouver

Kids and adults on bike tour of Vancouver, BC with cityscape behind them

Beautiful Vancouver is a travel lover’s dream come true.  This picturesque Pacific Northwest city has it all: three stunning mountains, the majestic Pacific coastline with the Stanley Park seawall, and a bustling city with quaint neighborhoods like the Gastown. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and Grouse Mountain are quite possibly two of our favorite travel adventures  ever!

In such a fantastic city, it’s hard to name a single highlight, but if forced we’d have to say it’s Stanley Park- named by Trip Advisor as the #1 park in the world.  Yes, you read that right, the world . We’ve been and we can vouch for it 100%!

Now don’t be fooled by the name.  Stanley Park isn’t like any park you’ve ever been to.  This 1,000 acre area is a Pacific coastal rainforest that is surrounded by beaches and filled with hiking trails.  And while there are plenty of outdoor adventures to have there, you can also find an aquarium, golf course, amphitheater, and even restaurants within the park.  Stanley Park is so large that you could quite literally spend your entire Vancouver vacation there and not see it all.

This is where a bike tour comes in handy!  Cycle Vancouver has multiple bike tours available to help you see and experience the city in just a few short hours, including a tour of Stanley Park.  Your tour guide will take you along a five mile route of kid-friendly bike paths and trails as you travel in and around the park.  Not only will you get to ride along the seawall and amongst rainforest trees, you’ll also get to see breathtaking views of the North Shore, downtown Vancouver, the Lion’s Gate Bridge, and more.

If your kids are under 10 and you’re worried your they won’t be able to keep up (3 hours could be a little long for small ones), Cycle Vancouver recommends a private tour instead. Call them if you’re unsure!

BEST TOURS: Stanley Park Tour

LENGTH/DURATION: 5 miles, 3 hours

RENTALS AVAILABLE : Bikes, e-bikes, tandem bikes, child bikes, trail-a-bikes, bike trailers, child bikes seats, and  bike rentals without tour

OTHER TOURS AVAILABLE:  The Grand Tour, Epic Electric Tour, Craft Beer Tour, Private Tours

4. Washington D.C.

Family taking a bike tour through DC, in front of Washington National Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol Building

If you’re looking for a summer vacation that will entertain, educate, and increase your kids’ patriotism, Washington D.C. is where it’s at!  Washington D.C. is, in our opinion, one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities in the U.S.  While it’s rich in American history, it still manages to be a completely hands-on, kid-friendly experience.

Your kids will be awed by the Air and Space Museum (free!), love watching the animals at the Smithsonian Zoo (also free!), laugh as they take a ride on the Smithsonian Carousel (just shy of free), and enjoy soaking their feet in the World War II Monument water fountain (free again!).  While Washington D.C. is full of history, it’s also full of fun!

One of the highlights of any trip to Washington D.C.– besides a meal at the historic Old Ebbitt’s Grill– is touring the National Mall.  With kids however, this can be daunting.  We’ve done it with our own kids (several times!) and only made it from the Lincoln Monument to the Washington Monument before the kids pooped out.  The Mall is long- almost 2 miles one way.  And while the metro system in D.C. is fantastic, it doesn’t have stops near any of the National Mall monuments.

So what’s a D.C.-bound family to do?  I’m sure you know the answer by now- take a bike tour!  Over the course of three hours, Bike and Roll Washington D.C. will take you on a leisurely tour of all 8 monuments that border the National Mall, including outliers like the FDR and Jefferson Monuments that aren’t included in other tours and are more difficult to get to.  And if you don’t fancy riding your bikes in the hot sun (D.C. summers can be brutal!), Bike and Roll offers both daytime and evening tours.

BEST TOURS : Monuments Bike Tour,  Monuments @ Nite Bike Tour , Blossoms By Bike

LENGTH/DURATION: 4 miles, 3 hours; 4 miles, 3 hours; 4 miles, 2 hours

RENTALS AVAILABLE : Bikes, bike trailers, tandem bikes, tag-a-long bikes,  bike rentals without tour

Family on bike tour in boston. Stopped to take pics on waterfront boardwalk

So you’ve been talking to your kids about how wonderful it would be to visit Boston.  Paul Revere!  The Boston Tea Party!  Fenway Park!!  Well, we know your little secret- what you really want is to take the  New Kids on the Block Tour  and we don’t blame you.  It’s on our bucket list too!!

A trip to Boston is a fantastic idea for any family.  This city on the harbor is packed with kid-friendly activities and something to interest everyone in the family.  Historians will get their fill of American Revolution lore as they walk the Freedom Trail and visit the USS Constitution.  Sports fans will delight in a visit to Fenway Park (and in the hopes of running into Tom Brady at the grocery store!).  Scholars will be happy to roam the halls of both the Harvard and MIT campuses.  The kids will love taking a ride on the Boston Common swan boats.  And Boston Cream Pie, anyone??

But with so much to see it can be a bit daunting to know where to start. Luckily, Urban Adventours- a locally owned bike tour company- has a family-friendly tour to help you see the sights of Boston from the comfort of a bike.

Sticking to mostly bike trails along the Charles River, this tour is a great introduction to Boston.  You’ll get a feel for the city as you ride along the Esplanade, visit the USS Constitution, and see breathtaking views of Boston and Cambridge.  And if you just can’t fit a bike tour in during the day, Urban Adventours has a sunset version of their tour just for you!

BEST TOURS : Tour de Boston , Tour de Boston Sunset Edition

LENGTH/DURATION: Under 10 miles, 2.5 hours; 5-7 miles, 2 hours

RENTALS AVAILABLE : Bikes, child bikes seats, tag-a-long bikes, e-bikes,  bike rentals without tour

OTHER TOURS AVAILABLE:  For kids comfortable with street riding,  Tour de Cambridge , and City View Tour

6. Hilton Head

Hilton Head - family riding on wood path to beach, two young boys playing in water at sunrise, family on pier in Hilton Head with famous lighthouse in background

Hilton Head Island is a fantastic combination of southern charm and outdoor adventure.  Depending on what you’re looking for, you can spend your days resting at Coligny Beach and visiting the Honey Horn Plantation; or you can get an adrenaline rush from ocean wakeboarding or riding the Hilton Head zipline.  But the first thing you’ll probably notice once you cross the bridge onto the island is that it seems like everyone  is on a bicycle.

And if you’re the kind of family that loves to have solo adventures, Hilton Head Island has the bike tour for you.  In fact, it’s not even technically a bike tour; it’s a figure-it-out-using-their-maps kind of tour.  The folks at Bicycle Billy’s not only offer you bike rentals but can help you figure out the best route for your family ride.

They’ve got maps to help you find your way around the Shipyard Plantation, Palmetto Dunes, the Sea Pines Resort (which has the famous lighthouse!), or to travel along Coligny, Folly Field or Burke’s Beaches.  You’ve got tons of options and choose the tour that’s best for your family!

BEST TOURS : Pick your favorite from the maps here !

LENGTH/DURATION: As long as you want!

RENTALS AVAILABLE : Bikes, bike trailers, tag-a-long bikes

7. Mackinac Island

Mackinac island main street and view of lake from bridge. Woman riding a bicycle with her son on a bike tour.

If you’ve ever longed to go back in time, Mackinac Island may be your best bet.  This Victorian-style village is unique in many ways, the most striking of which is its lack of motor vehicles.  You won’t hear car horns honking, or see taxis careening through traffic…. because there aren’t any!  On this island, all motor vehicles are illegal, which leaves you with three travel options: your own two feet, riding a bike, or using a horse and buggy (don’t forget yours at home!).

And while that may not seem like the most convenient way to live, it is a fantastic way to vacation.  Rather than hustling from one activity to another, Mackinac Island forces you to slow down and enjoy the (bike) ride.  You’ll find that there’s plenty of time for a family kayaking trip, a morning of fishing the Straits of Mackinac, a sunset sailing cruise around the island, or even a parasailing adventure on Lake Huron.

You’ll also find that this is the perfect place for a bike tour.  With absolutely no worry about road traffic, this is one place that families with even the youngest riders can safely take a bike tour.  Mackinac Bike Tours offers families the opportunity to do two self-guided tours which are perfect for those who want to go at their own pace.  Pick between the Attractions Tour that will take you to different hotspots on the island, or do the M-185 Perimeter tour and circle the entire island.  Either way, you’re guaranteed a fantastic family adventure on the safest bike-riding island around!

BEST TOURS :  Self-Guided Attractions Tour, Self-Guided M-185 Perimeter

LENGTH/DURATION: 3 miles, 2.5 hours; 8 miles, 1.5 hours

RENTALS AVAILABLE : Bikes, bike trailers, and tag-a-long bikes (from Mackinac Bikes : tandem, adult trike, fat bike)

OTHER TOURS AVAILABLE:  Customized self-guided tours available, rent a bike and just ride on your own

8. Philadelphia

Liberty Hall in Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell, and Family on a Pedal Tour of Philly

If you’ve ever watched National Treasure, then you know that Philadelphia is packed with history (and action, if your name is Benjamin Franklin Gates!).  Just like Nicolas Cage you can get up close and personal with the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Old Pine Street Church, the Christ Church Burial Ground, and even the same Urban Outfitters where Nic and Diane Kruger chatted in the dressing rooms.  Yes, history and Hollywood have finally collided.

And if all of that doesn’t sound fun enough, then let us tell you about the awesome folks at Wheel Fun Rentals.  These people have taken bike tours to the next level.  Not only can you do one of their self-guided tours by bike, you can also choose to travel by pedal-powered surrey, deuce coupe, or adult tricycle.  Imagine the fantastic pictures you can get of Dad and the kids pedaling their surrey down Ben Franklin Blvd, past old colonial houses, and Independence Hall.  Your Instagram feed will be next level, my friend.

And if you’re worried about getting lost without a tour guide, the folks at Wheel Fun provide you with a detailed map with turn-by-turn directions.  You and your pedal-powered vehicles will have no trouble getting around the City of Brotherly Love.  Oh, and don’t forget to take a break for some Philly Cheesesteak.  (Pro tip: Pat’s is hands-down the King of Steaks.)

BEST TOURS : Philadelphia’s Center City Bike Tour

LENGTH/DURATION: 12 miles (or shorter if you like!), 3-4 hours

RENTALS AVAILABLE : Bikes, tandem bikes, surrey, deuce coupe, chopper, quad sport,  bike rentals without tour

OTHER TOURS AVAILABLE:  Fairmount Park Bike Tour

9. Key West

Key Lime Bike Tours in Key West - people riding lime green bikes down the strand and on the pier

Sometimes you just need to spend a week (or five) at the beach.  And while families with young kids might first think of California or Hawaii for their vacation plans, Key West is actually a fantastic option for your spring break plans.

Key West has endless options for family adventures!  You can spend the day behind a boat water skiing or parasailing.  You can dive deep and discover sea life while snorkeling or  snuba diving (no we didn’t spell that wrong!).  You can have a totally unique adventure while clear kayaking or swimming with dolphins.  No matter what you choose to do, your kids will love that each day brings a brand new adventure.

But with all of that adventuring, sometimes you just need a little rest from the water play.  For one of those days, we would highly suggest that you take a family bike tour with Key Lime Bike Tours.  Their tour guides will take you into the heart of the city, helping you get a feel for this beautiful and historic town.  You’ll find yourself at locations like Ernest Hemingway’s house, the breathtaking Key West seaport, and the southernmost point of the continental United States.

Oh, and at the end of the tour, you’ll also find yourself eating a slice of key lime pie (sign me up!).  And if you happen to be stopping by Key West on a Disney Cruise, Key Lime Bike Tours is Disney’s official Key West bike tour company.  You know if Mickey trusts them, they must be good!

BEST TOURS : Key Lime Historical Tour

LENGTH/DURATION:  6 miles, 2.5 – 3 hours

RENTALS AVAILABLE : Bikes, kids bikes

AGES:  8+

10.  San Francisco

Bike Tour in San Francisco - dad and daughter riding on bike path on the Golden Gate Bridge, family riding on dirt path along the water

If you’re looking to escape the summer heat, a trip to San Francisco might be right up your alley.  This beautiful California city somehow manages to stay below 70 degrees, even in August!

Besides being a haven from the heat, San Francisco is also a fantastically kid-friendly city (having regularly visited with three kids under the age of five, we know what we’re talking about!!).  There are truly so many places to go and so much to see, you’ll never run out of things to do!

Your kids will love the winding drive down Lombard Street, taking a tour of the Ghirardelli factory, and riding on the famous San Francisco cable cars.  Yet with all of the many things you can do in San Francisco, there are two things that you truly cannot miss- the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz!

Now if you’re like us and you happened to arrive in San Francisco without Alcatraz tour tickets, you might start kicking yourself because (dang it!) those things sell out months in advance.  Well, luckily the folks at Blazing Saddles have your back.

Not only can they take you on an amazing guided tour from Fisherman’s Wharf, across the Golden Gate Bridge, and into beautiful Sausalito (just in time for lunch!); but they can also help you get tickets to Alcatraz as well.  While they don’t run the Alcatraz tours, they can help you coordinate tickets so that once your bike tour is over you can head back to the city, park your bike at Pier 33, and head to the creepiest and coolest island around.  This will be one packed day, but your kids are going to think you’re a pretty awesome parent!

BEST TOURS : Bike & Rock Alcatraz and Golden Gate Tour ; Golden Gate Bridge Tour

LENGTH/DURATION: 8 miles, 3 hours (not including time at Alcatraz); 8 miles, 3 hours

RENTALS AVAILABLE : Bikes, kids bikes, tag-a-long bikes, bike trailers, child bike seats, tandem bikes, e-bikes, rentals without a tour

OTHER TOURS AVAILABLE:  Golden Gate Bridge Electric Bike Tour , Golden Gate Bridge Twilight Tour ,  Self-guided tours

Tips for Biking with Kids

We spoke with Jeremy Lewno, the founder and owner of Bobby’s Bike Hike in Chicago . His tour is the only one we could find specifically geared towards kids, and after 14 years of running that tour, he’s definitely an expert on bike touring with young ones. Here are a few pro tips he helped us with to ensure a family biking experience that’s epic and melt-down free.

1. Be realistic about time and distance. If you don’t regularly ride bikes with your kids, you probably don’t know how long they can last on a bike. Luckily on bike tours you generally make several stops to interact with your guide and to take pictures. But even with these breaks, it’s probably best to keep a ride with kids under 2.5 hours.

2. Call ahead of time.  Let your tour group know you’re coming and help them understand your family situation. Even if they don’t have a tour specifically aimed at kids, there may be certain times or guides that are better suited for little ones.

3. Arrive early.  A good tour group will take the time to properly fit bikes and helmets to each adult and child rider. They’ll also be able to determine if your little one is better off on a tag-a-long bike, in a child bike seat, or in a bike trailer. Evaluating rider ability before the start of a ride is essential! Even if your child can ride a bike, they might be better off on a tour with a tag-a-long or tandem bike. The tour group should also set up all of the equipment for you and give you the opportunity to ride around and get comfortable before the tour starts.

"The itinerary provided by tour radar was not exactly how the tour was set up. One of our stops said we would be doing a cruise on lake Powell. That was not provided with the tour. Also the hotels that they said we would be staying at did not line up.

"the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.

Who comes on a Family Adventure Tour?

Our Family Adventure Tours are designed to help introduce kids into bike travel. The minimum age at the time of the trip to participate is 8 years old. Kids are encouraged to be able to ride the daily mileage on their own, but the use of a tag-a-long can help extend a younger kid’s mileage.

On these tours, kids must be accompanied by adults, and adults must be accompanied by kids. We’ve had parents, grand parents, aunts and uncles, and groups of friends all take their kids on our Family Adventure Tours in the past.

Level of Support

Our fully supported tours offer you the highest level of service of any of our offerings, but you will still be an active participant as in any of our other tours. Our Event Director and Tour Leaders are there to help facilitate a great experience for you.

Tour Leaders:  Our Tour Leader staff on our fully supported events consist of an Event Director, Professional Mechanic, and 2-5 additional staff members. As a well oiled machine, they’ll take of the logistics and make sure you’re set up to have a great ride.

Luggage Transport: Our luggage truck will haul your gear from overnight to overnight, keeping your riding load down. You can bring two pieces of luggage, each weighing up to 25 pounds, and all your items should fit within. Luggage will be picked up and dropped off at each campsite, and for those staying at the indoor option, luggage will be picked up and delivered to the hotel.

Route Markings: Your tour will use on the ground route markings to help you find the turns and focus more on the ride and the scenery than the cue sheet. Some tour locations have some restrictions on route markings, which will be discussed during your daily map meetings.

SAG Support: Our on tour vehicles will be able to provide SAG support for health and mechanical emergencies. You should come to the tour prepared to ride the daily mileage. Any rider under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult during any SAG support rides.

Activities: We’ll set up some activities at some of our overnight locations for the whole family to be involved with should you choose to. We are unable to provide any childcare services.

Before you go

Upon signing up for an organized tour, you will receive confirmation and preparatory materials, including a copy of Before You Go: A Handbook for Adventure Cycling’s Supported Tours (PDF), which contains a packing list and training tips. About 60 days prior to your trip, you will receive a Tour Information Packet with specific logistical details about your starting location, the designated bike shop, shipping your bike, making travel arrangements, and much more.

Meals and Rest Stops

Our catering staff will provide all meals, including a hot breakfast each morning. Lunches typically are a build your own sandwich, and the sandwiches are transported to the designated lunch stop for you to enjoy. Dinners offer a variety of options each night, and as much as possible, incorporate local food and flavor! Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other special dietary needs can be accommodated when known about in advance. We know that sometimes kids can be picky eaters, so the menu is planned with that flexibility in mind.

Each day, you’ll have a designated water stop and a lunch stop where our staff will be set up with snacks and water/energy drinks. These are a great chance to take a break and catch up with other riders about what you’ve seen so far.

Accommodations

Most of the overnights will be at private or public campgrounds with a variety of amenities. Depending on the nature and location of the trip, these facilities could range from RV parks with hot tubs, to more remote locations without running water. You will need a good freestanding tent with a ground cloth, a sleeping bag rated appropriately for the season and elevation of your tour, and a sleeping pad. Showers are available each night of the tour.

Being Prepared

Adventure Cycling tours are a great way to get out and explore new places and meet new friends. You whole family should plan on coming to your tour prepared to ride, both physically and with the correct equipment. Check out our Before You Go booklet (PDF) for more information on training and packing. You shouldn’t come to your tour planning to ride into shape, as coming to the trip ready for anything will have you enjoying it from day one.

Be sure to read the full tour itinerary, including the Adventure Level, Terrain, and Technical Difficulty ratings to make sure that you prepare fully for the tour. If you have additional questions about the tour, please reach out to us at [email protected] .

Weather on our trips is highly variable and can be unpredictable. Your Tour Information Packet will have some information about weather for your tour, but you should come prepared to ride in all riding conditions no matter where your tour is or what time of year it takes place.

Mechanical Support

Family Adventure tours provide an experienced mechanic who follows the route every day in a support vehicle or by bike to take care of mechanical emergencies. The mechanic will also be available each evening at the camping location. We carry a supply of tires, tubes, and spare parts, but you should come prepared with the equipment and tools to change a flat. Our mechanic will do a pre-tour safety check of each bike.

eBikes are allowed on some of our fully supported tours, denoted by the below icon. Read our FAQ for information about eBikes on Adventure Cycling tours.

Exploring together

Family-friendly bike tours

Exploring together.

Bicycle tours are a great way for your family to explore a region or country. Together you get a feel for new terrain, the sights and smells, history, culture, and people—experiences that aren’t always possible from a train or rental car.

Here are the factors we consider when recommending a tour for your family:

  • Does the tour take place on dedicated bike paths? Or possibly quiet side roads?
  • Is the route grade flat or mostly flat?
  • Are the daily distances shorter (easier for shorter legs)?
  • Does the tour operator provide appropriate bikes and rental equipment for a variety of ages?
  • Does the tour possibly have educational value, enjoyable sites or attractions, non-cycling activities, or built-in rest days?
“Our family had an amazing experience. With two boys the distance was easily manageable, and we could focus on the ‘travel experience’ and not just getting there.”

7 of Europe's best cycling holidays for families

Cycling holidays in the UK and Europe have never been easier for families, with trails to suit every ability from tots to teens.

Europe’s well-established cycling networks include dozens of child-friendly routes to help active families turn a weekend pastime into a thrilling holiday. Whether circling Alpine lakes, following the disused lines of once great railways, tracking the continent’s biggest rivers or hurtling downhill at dedicated adventure centres, there’s a trip for every age and ability.

1. Bannau Brycheiniog, Wales

Cycling level:   BikePark Wales   tracks cater for every level. Just south of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, BikePark Wales has over 40 mountain bike trails slaloming down 1,200 acres of forested hillside. The park’s new ‘Ticket to Ride’, launched this Easter to run in school holidays, includes bike and kit hire plus four hours on beginner level runs. Beyond the park, families can try several other paths, such as the waterside Taff Trail from Brecon to Brynich Lock.

2. Lake Constance, Germany & Switzerland

Cycling level: beginner — cycle as far as you like each day, with ferry hops for added fun. Dotted with lidos along its German and Swiss sections, the Lake Constance Cycle Path is suitable for hauling toddlers along in bike trailers. It passes through idyllic lakeside towns against a backdrop of Alpine peaks; tour operator Freedom Treks offers an itinerary from a single hotel base for maximum convenience.

3. Danube Cycle Path, Austria

Cycling level: beginner — the dedicated cycle paths are flat and smooth, making them suitable good for all.  The full Danube Cycle Path, covering eight countries and around 750 miles, is a bit ambitious for a family break, but bite-sized sections are ideal for even the youngest riders. One of the best is the Austrian segment from Linz to Vienna, following the flat riverside path through ancient towns, exploring crumbling castle ruins along the way. It’s a great journey for more adventurous families to plot independently, with hotels, guesthouses and campsites at regular intervals — plan your daily distances to suit your kids’ stamina, making sure to spend one night close to the grapes in the Wachau wine region.

4. Van Gogh Cycle Route, Netherlands

Cycling level: beginner — quiet and gentle; a great intro to cycling breaks.  Nearly 150 years ago, the thatched-roof villages, nature reserves and fields in northeastern Netherlands’s Drenthe province caught the eye of Vincent van Gogh. This new trail highlights the region where he lived and worked, and passes by the real-life scenes painted by the artist. The full route is made up of three loops of around 30 miles and is perfect for young cyclists, following flat country lanes and canal paths.

A pciture of tulip fields in the neatherlands. Each sectionof the field is populated only by tulips of one colour, to create a block effect.

5. Atlantic Coast Route, Portugal

Cycling level: intermediate — some hilly terrain calls for stronger riders. Part of the continent-crossing EuroVelo network, the western end of the Atlantic Coast Route from Porto to Lisbon connects two great child-friendly cities. It’s an eight-day spin through one of Europe’s sunniest corners, skirting wide beaches, ragged coves and fishing villages with fresh seafood. Tour operator Love Velo offers a package, staying in three-star hotels en route.

6. Lake Garda to Venice, Italy

Cycling level: intermediate — the longer daily distances may be too much for younger riders. The lure of pizza and gelato at the day’s end will keep youngsters pedalling hard on this tour across northern Italy, from the tranquil waters of Lake Garda to the gondolas of Venice’s canals. In between, riders cling close to the Adige River, passing through historic Verona, where young thespians can explore the giant central Roman amphitheatre and call up to the balcony that inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Covering around 30 miles per day, it’s worth booking onto an organised tour with a tour operator like Skedaddle to get luggage transfers included.

7. Ciro Trail , Balkans

Cycling level: confident, with some gradients and a few off-road sections. This path follows the old railway from Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina all the way to Dubrovnik on the Croatian Adriatic coast. Old station buildings have been converted into cheap, bike-friendly guesthouses and cafes for pit-stops along the 98-mile trail, and kids will be thrilled by the tunnel sections. En route, there are Roman and medieval ruins to explore and sparkling rivers for refreshing dips.

10 Tempting Bike Trails for LA Families 2024

Updated for 2024.

Bike riding with kids is one of the most fun activities you can do as a family in Los Angeles. With near perfect weather year round in Southern California, families can ride their bikes anytime they want.

We know there’s always some risk when riding in the bike lanes, even though they’ve been made safer over the years, so we’ve focused on Bike Trails and Paths.

If you’re lucky enough to live on a cul-de-sac or a street where car traffic is light, you and your kids can obviously ride there safely.

If you’re looking to get out beyond your street to go on a bit further of a bike ride with your kids, we’ve curated a list for you of the best bike trails for kids in Los Angeles!

The Bike path along the Expo train line from Overland Avenue to Santa Monica is a paved trail that can be great for families. The path goes all the way to the Colorado/17th Street station. Experienced bikers can take city streets to the beach and jump on the “Strand” bike trail (see below). Even though there are a lot of street light stops along the way, it’s a fun beginner ride for kids.

Marvin Braude Bike Trail Los Angeles County, CA

The 27-mile Marvine Braude Bike Trail aka “The Strand” stretches along the beach from Pacific Palisades to Palos Verdes, offering a long stretch of flat and well-maintained surface to ride that is perfect for kids. The gorgeous bike trail provides an easy cruise for biking families hoping to experience many of L.A.’s most admired beach towns: Santa Monica, Venice, Marina del Rey, Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo. However, keep an eye out for joggers, roller skaters and walker who also use the path.

Conejo Creek Bike Path Thousand Oaks, CA

The city of Thousand Oaks opened the Conejo Creek Bike Path in Spring 2011 and it provides a nice and flat bicycle path alternative to the busy city streets. . ‘It just grabbed her’: Giraffe picks up toddler during family trip to drive-thru safari

GLEN ROSE, Texas ( KWTX /Gray News) - A family in Texas says they went through quite the scare when recently visiting a wildlife center.

According to the Toten family, a giraffe accidentally picked their toddler up out of the bed of their truck when they were visiting the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center on June 1.

KWTX reports that park visitors get to drive themselves along a path where exotic and endangered animals roam free at the center.

Visitors are also allowed to feed the animals.

The family said Paisley, 2, was in the back of the pickup truck with her mom feeding the animals when the giraffe grabbed her shirt and lifted the little girl into the air.

Paisley’s father, Jason Toten, said the incident was caught on video by a car behind them.

“We stopped to feed the giraffes and I turned around to look out the back window,” he said. “That’s when I saw the giraffe kind of digging around and then it just grabbed her.”

According to the Toten family, it appeared to be a complete accident and they didn’t break any rules.

“Paisley was holding the bag, and the giraffe went to go get the bag, not her, but it ended up getting her shirt too and picked her up,” Toten said.

Thankfully, Paisley didn’t get too high up before the giraffe dropped her.

“As soon as she went up, her mom yelled, ‘Hey!’ and the giraffe let go,” Toten said.

Paisley’s father said she ended up falling into her mother’s arms without anyone getting hurt, but it still was a scary moment.

“My heart stopped, my stomach dropped … it scared me,” Toten said.

Afterward, Toten said they went to the gift shop and got Paisley a toy giraffe because “she deserved it.”

The family said they do plan on returning to the park in the future.

According to the wildlife center, visitors are allowed to ride in the bed of a truck if an adult is riding in the back with them and everyone is safely inside the vehicle.

Father dies in motorcycle crash during memorial ride for late daughter

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ( KTUU /Gray News) - The father of Cynthia Hoffman, the woman who was murdered by four teenagers in 2019 near Thunderbird Falls in Alaska, was killed Sunday after losing control of his motorcycle on the Parks Highway during a memorial ride honoring his late daughter.

Alaska State Troopers reported that 58-year-old Timothy Hoffman lost control of his motorcycle around mile 49 of the Parks Highway near South Rainbow Street in the Meadow Lakes area and rolled into the center median.

Timothy Hoffman was participating in an annual memorial ride for his late daughter when the incident happened, according to his brother Donald Hoffman Jr., who posted about the crash on his Facebook.

“He was happy, really, you know, ecstatic about riding,” Donald Hoffman said the day after his brother’s fatal accident. “He’s like that every year. He just wants to go and have a good time. Cynthia loved Harleys. He’s a Harley lover.”

Timothy Hoffman’s death came five years to the day of his daughter’s murder.

The ride started Sunday morning in Anchorage. Timothy Hoffman’s passenger that day was his wife, and Cynthia Hoffman’s mother, Jeannie.

“It was the first time his wife, this was the first time she ever rode on the bike with him on the memorial ride. He always drove by himself,” Donald Hoffman recalled.

Donald Hoffman said the first part of the ride was to the Victims for Justice Memorial, where Cynthia Hoffman’s name is etched in stone.

After that, it was off to Thunderbird Falls.

“That’s where he said a prayer, his No. 1 club member said a prayer in some words,” Donald Hoffman said. “And then we walked over across the bridge to the river and dropped roses because that’s her middle name, Cynthia Rose.”

Cynthia Hoffman was 19 years old when she was murdered near Thunderbird Falls in Alaska.

The group made one more stop on their way to the closing party in Big Lake. It was after this stop, roughly two miles from the party, where the tragic accident happened.

“We switched places. I pulled to the front, he pulled right behind me,” Donald Hoffman described. “Got up past Metal Creek and that’s when the accident happened.”

Timothy Hoffman was piloting the motorcycle with his wife at the time of the crash. Troopers said he was not wearing a helmet at the time, while his wife was.

Both were found unresponsive after authorities were notified around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Troopers said Timothy Hoffman and his wife were both hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. His wife remains in critical condition.

The crash closed down the Parks Highway for two-and-a-half hours, troopers said, with traffic being diverted to an adjacent frontage road.

The crash investigation remains ongoing.

Timothy Hoffman’s daughter was 19 years old when she was murdered in June 2019 by four teenagers who were accused of being “catfished” by another man to execute the killing for a large amount of money.

Two of the four convicted defendants, Darin Schilmiller and Denali Brehmer, have been sentenced to 99 years each. The other two, Caleb Leyland and Kayden McIntosh, are awaiting sentencing .

“He worked hard,” Donald Hoffman added. “He had a big family to take care of. He took care of foster children. Anybody that needed a place or some food or some money, he was there always.”

Donald Hoffman said he has established an account at Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union to benefit his brother’s family. The account number is 191814, and donations will go directly to Timothy Hoffman’s family for help with medical and household bills.

8-year-old girl riding her bike charged, stomped on by cow elk

ESTES PARK, Colo. (Gray News) - An 8-year-old girl from Colorado is recovering after she was charged and stomped on by a cow elk while riding her bike.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon in Estes Park, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife . Family members say the 8-year-old was riding her bike in a neighborhood when a female elk started charging her from about 60 yards away.

When the elk reached the victim, she stomped on her multiple times. The girl was taken to the hospital for treatment and released later that day.

A wildlife officer who responded to the area found the elk with a young calf.

“This is an unusual and unfortunate situation where a young girl was playing outside, far from the calf, and a cow elk became aggressive to protect her newborn,” said Jason Duetsch, area wildlife manager for Colorado Parks. “We’re happy the girl is recovering from her injuries and wish her continued healing.”

Wildlife officials say this time of the year is considered calving season, during which elk can be a lot more aggressive. They recommend giving the animals as much room as possible and leaving young wildlife alone.
