Indonesia Tourist Visa: Requirements and Application Process

Published: May 17, 2024

The Indonesia tourist visa, officially known as the Tourist Single Entry Visitor Visa (Code C1, formerly B221A) is the only option for tourists from countries not eligible for VOA or eVOA.

It is also the best visa for those who want to stay longer in Indonesia. This visa allows stays up to 180 days with the allowed 2 extensions. No visa agent or guarantor is required and you can apply for this visa and extend it online all by yourself.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: All but 7 countries
  • Validity: 90 days
  • Duration of stay: 60 days
  • Processing time: 5 days
  • Visa fee: 1,500,000 IDR (~93 USD)
  • Extension: Twice, 60 days each, 2,000,000 IDR fee

If you haven’t already, read the Indonesia Visa Guide for information on various visa options for tourists, their eligibility and requirements.

Understanding indonesia tourist visa.

Indonesia Tourist Visa Sample

Tourist visa validity

The Indonesia Visitor Visa is valid for 90 days from the issue date. You must enter Indonesia within its 90-day validity.

Duration of stay

With the single-entry visitor visa, you are allowed to stay 60 days in Indonesia.

The day you enter Indonesia is considered as day 1. The last day you are allowed to stay is printed as “Valid Until” on your Stay Permit sticker in your passport.

For example, if you enter on 01 Jun 2024, you must leave Indonesia on or before 30 Jul 2024.

Allowed number of entries

The Indonesia tourist visa is single-entry only. If you leave Indonesia at any point, including after extending, the visa is void and you will need a new one to return.

Allowed ports of entry

Using the single-entry visitor visa, you can enter Indonesia from any international airport, seaport or land border checkpoint.

When to apply

The processing time of the tourist visa is 5 working days. It may take longer sometimes, so it’s better to apply well in advance.

  • Latest: 1 week before traveling
  • Earliest: 90 days before traveling

Tourist visa extension

You can extend the tourist visitor visa twice. Each extension costs 2,000,000 IDR and grants an additional 60 days. This makes the maximum allowed stay with 2 extensions 180 days, which will cost 5,500,000 IDR (~340 USD) in total.

Online extensions of the C1 visa are now possible. If any issues arise with the online systems, you can visit an Immigration Office to extend in person.

How to apply for tourist visa

There are 2 identical official government websites for applying Indonesian visas.

  • Molina Imigrasi
  • eVisa Imigrasi

You can use either one but for this article, I will use the first one – Molina Imigrasi.

Step 1: Create an account on the Molina Immigrasi website. You will have to upload a scan of your passport bio page and a digital face photo and enter personal and passport information.

After creating the account you will receive an email with a verification link. After verification, log into your account.

Step 2: Start a new application and select General, Family, or Social , then Tourism, Family Visit, and Transit and finally visa type Tourist Single Entry Visitor Visa – 60 days .

Step 3: Enter your personal information and intended address in Indonesia. Enter the address and postal code of the first hotel you will stay at and the rest of the address will populate automatically.

On the same page, upload your bank statement. This must be a PDF.

Step 4: Review the information. Sometimes the data from your passport is automatically populated but is incorrect. Correct as required.

Step 5: Follow the payment procedure.

How to track tourist visa status

There is no option to track the status of your application. Wait at least 5 business days before contacting immigration.

How to download the approved tourist visa

Once processed, your visa will be sent to you via email.

You can also retrieve it from the Home Page of either visa website by clicking the button “Extend your visa”.

How to contact tourist visa customer service

Email Indonesian Immigration at [email protected] for support and any inquiries regarding the visitor visa.

Entry Procedure at the Border

The single-entry visitor visa is an e-Visa. You can carry a paper copy but not necessary. You can show the visa on your phone.

When you arrive, head directly to Immigration. Hand over your passport and visa, on your phone or paper copy.

The officer may ask you how long you intend to stay in Indonesia and where you want to go. He may ask to see your return or onward ticket.

The officer will then stamp your passport with a “Stay Permit”. Check the “Valid until” date on your stay permit. This is the date until which you can legally stay in Indonesia (unless you extend).

After immigration, collect your luggage and head to customs. Complete the online customs declaration . You will have to scan the QR code at customs to proceed.

How to Extend the Indonesia Visitor Visa

The C1 single-entry visitor visa is now possible to extend online. You can also extend in person at the immigration office or take the help of an agent.

Extend online

To extend online, go to either the Molina or eVisa website that you have used to apply for your visa and log in.

Step 1: Click on “Services” in the main menu at the top.

Step 2: Click on the Apply button within “Stay Permit”.

Step 3: You should see your current “Stay Permit”. Click the “Extend” button on the right side of the bar.

Step 4: Follow the application process. There is an upload box asking for a Guarantee letter but it is not mandatory. Do not upload anything there – it is not a requirement for the personal C1 visa .

Step 5: Pay. If the system allows you to pay by card – you are lucky! Usually, it’s not an available option and the only payment option present is to use Simponi.

Simponi is a billing system managed by the Indonesian Government. It will issue you a payment code . Take the code or print the invoice and pay using one of these methods:

  • By cash at any Indonesian Bank
  • At an ATM that accepts cash deposits
  • Using GoPay or a similar e-money payment provider in Indonesia

After you pay, the status of your application will change from “Waiting for Payment” to “Waiting for Verification”.

Step 6: Wait until your application status changes from “Waiting Verification” to “Approved”. This usually takes 5 business days but may take longer. You will receive an email when it’s approved.

Step 7: Download the visa from the retrieve section of the visa website or keep the PDF file attached to the approval email safe.

Extend in person (offline)

Try to extend online first. If any issues prevent you from submitting your application, visit an Immigration Office (Kantor Imigrasi) in person.

This is how all 60-day tourist visas were extended before the online system was introduced.

You will have to visit 3 times in total:

  • On the first visit, you will hand over your passport and pay.
  • A few days later you will have to go back and complete biometrics – fingerprints and a photo
  • When the extension is ready you will be notified via email. Go back one last time to collect your passport with the visa extension.

Alternatively, you can use a visa agent. Visa agents charge a premium (usually 2.8 million IDR instead of the standard 2 million) but you only need to go to immigration once for the biometrics. The agent will take care of the entire process for you. Some agents will even pick you up and drive you to the Immigration Office if required.

Apply for Bali e-Visa to Indonesia in 2024: Entry rules

What types of e-visas for Bali: come to Indonesia for a long stay

E-VISA SIMPLIFIES INDONESIA VISA APPLICATION PROCESS

The electronic visa (e-Visa) application system was launched on October 27, 2020 by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia. An e-visa makes it easier for foreign tourists to obtain a visa, wherever they are. There are currently 2 types of e-visas:

  • ONSHORE: Foreigners are already in Indonesia ( officially removed on June 27, 2023 ).
  • OFFSHORE: Foreigners are abroad and will enter Indonesia.

Visa with index 211A (ex B211A) is intended for tourist and/or business trips. The period of stay on a visa, subject to possible extensions, is up to 180 days. Starting June 27, 2023, if your OFFSHORE visa expires, you can apply only for a new OFFSHORE visa and make “visa runs” to the nearest country.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A VISA TO INDONESIA

  • the visa application is submitted by a sponsoring company with a travel agency license in Indonesia; some types of visas can be sponsored by the citizens of the country;
  • the sponsor fills out the required documents and submits a letter for obtaining an e-visa to the General Directorate of Immigration of Indonesia;
  • if approved, the e-visa is sent to the email address of the sponsor and the applicant;
  • e-visa can be used immediately for travel: foreigners do not need to visit the Indonesian embassy to apply or stamp the visa in their passport.

Maximum length of stay in Indonesia territory is 60 (sixty) days and starting from the first day of arrival, regardless of the time of arrival (e.g. arriving in Indonesia at 23:30 or 11:30 PM is considered Day 1st). Length of stay in Indonesia for holders of Visa 211A (ex B211A) can be extended maximum 2 (two) times, with 60 days per extension. Request for visa extension must be submitted to the nearest Immigration Office in Indonesia at the latest 7 (seven) days before the allowed duration of stay expires.

Requirements to apply for a visa:

  • passport biodata page (valid for at least six months);
  • photo like for passport.

Do I need a visa to go to Indonesia?

Reaching Indonesia's beaches, volcanoes and reefs is easy, with visa-free travel for many nationalities © Mazur Travel / Shutterstock

Even without the complications of the pandemic, the rules for getting a visa for Indonesia have always been ever-changing and confusing. But it's a welcome sign that things are returning to normal fact that we’re asking the same old questions again: Do I need a visa for Indonesia? Is it free? Can I get a visa on arrival, and if so where? How long does it last? Can I get an extension?

For many tourists, travel to Indonesia means one thing – a holiday in Bali , the Island of the Gods and one of Southeast Asia’s best-loved tropical islands. Around 6.2 million tourists visited Bali in 2019, but this dropped to just 45 in 2021. Now, after some tough years for somewhere that relies so intrinsically on tourism, Bali is back open for business, and with it the rest of the archipelago.

There is, however, a bit more red tape to navigate than usual. Here's what you need to know about getting a visa for Indonesia.

Getting a visa on arrival in Bali

If you want to travel to Indonesia right now, Bali is by far the easiest place to visit. Not only can you get a 30-day Visa on Arrival (VOA), but quarantine regulations have been eased so you can pretty much get straight on with relaxing from the get-go. This is currently the only place in Indonesia where you can get a visa when you arrive.

The Visa on Arrival scheme is currently limited to 23 countries , including the UK, most Western European nations, many Middle Eastern countries, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and most Southeast Asia nations. However, there are plans to expand it to other nationalities, and to offer visas on arrival at other points of entry into Indonesia.

Visas for Bali are issued on arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar , for a fee of IDR500,000 (US$35), which you'll need to pay before you start queuing at the immigration counter. The entry permit can later be extended for 30 days, giving a total stay of 60 days.

You'll need to show proof of a return ticket (or an onward ticket from Bali to another destination), and you need six months of validity remaining in your passport – it's worth double-checking the expiry date in your passport, given how long travel has been off the cards.

Surfer riding a barrel wave at Padang Padang on Bali, Indonesia

Covid-19 rules for travel to Bali

There are also a few Covid regulations to follow if you're traveling to Bali. You need to be fully vaccinated to avoid quarantine; if you're only partially vaccinated, you’ll need to quarantine for six days. You also need proof of a negative PCR test from the country you’ve flown in from, along with travel insurance that covers Covid-related expenses.

On arrival, you must take a PCR test at the airport, before you’re whisked off to a pre-booked government-certified hotel. You’ll need to hang out in your room until you get your result (which hopefully will be the same day or the next day), but as soon as you’ve tested negative you’re free to hit the beach or trek up that volcano!

But before you get too excited, a second PCR test is required on the third day of your stay. You’ll be free to come and go as you please by day during that period, but you are required to stay at the same approved hotel for the first three nights. So long as you get a second negative result, you can check out and stay wherever you want to on Bali or across Indonesia.

This may sound a little convoluted, but it's part of a pilot program launched in March 2022. If all goes smoothly, the plan is for quarantine to be scrapped altogether.

Traveling to other parts of Indonesia

What about the rest of Indonesia? Java , Sumatra , Lombok …and all the other great places to visit in this beautiful country? Technically, Indonesia has been open for international travel since January 2022, but to visit, you'll need to obtain a B211A Tourism Visa. This is currently the only option beyond the visas being offered on arrival in Bali.

The B211A Tourism Visa must be arranged before you travel through an authorized Indonesian travel agent, who will act as a sponsor for your application. The fee is quite expensive – expect to pay US$150 to US$250 depending on the agency – but visas are valid for 60 days, and you can extend your stay for as long as six months through the same agency that arranged the visa. Even if you are eligible for a visa on arrival in Bali, if you’re planning on traveling long-term in Indonesia, you’ll need a B211A Tourism Visa.

For the application process, you need to supply a scanned copy of your passport ID pages and proof of at least one vaccination dose and travel insurance with coverage for Covid-related emergencies. Your passport should be valid for a year beyond the date of arrival if you're hoping to stay for the full six months.

Applications are filed using the immigration department's online e-visa portal – once you have your e-visa, you'll have to follow the same schedule of PCR tests and stays at government-certified hotels as for tourists arriving in Bali, before you can travel freely around the country.

Visas for travel beyond Bali are likely to be reintroduced soon

If all that sounds like a lot of hard work, just sit tight, as further changes to entry rules are in the pipeline. The Visa on Arrival scheme is expected to be rolled out for more points of arrival beyond Bali in the coming weeks, with more nationalities expected to be added to the approved list, and quarantine requirements are likely to be simplified. For the latest info, check the Media Room link on the website of Indonesia's immigration department .

In the meantime, if you're planning to travel around Indonesia, weigh up the price difference between flying direct to your favored destination and obtaining a B211A Tourism Visa versus flying into Bali to obtain a visa on arrival then taking a domestic flight or boat to reach other parts of the country.

If you’re lucky enough to be traveling to Indonesia for work, you'll need a business visa (actually a sub-class of the B211A visa), which must be arranged through an authorized agency or through your company. See the official immigration department website for the latest information.

Types of visas to visit Jakarta

If you are visiting Jakarta for vacation or work, it is important you stay informed with the recent immigration law, as some things have changed in our post Covid world and that includes the visa application process.

Prior to the covid pandemic, many nationalities could enter Indonesia using a free visit visa, but during the covid pandemic, the free visa was revoked. In early 2022, the Visa on Arrival was reintroduced and at time of writing 86 nationalities may enter Indonesia using this. Some countries in the South East Asian block may now obtain the free visa. For further information, check out our article about  everything you need to know about the Visa on Arrival.

There are multiple other types of visa that can be obtained to visit Jakarta depending on your purpose. Visa application times may vary, as will the visa application fee. To ensure you obtain the correct visa  contact LetsMoveIndonesia.

There are many internet sites offering information about maintaining a business in Jakarta and applying for an Investor KITAS, but  LetsMoveIndonesia  is the home for all things visa and  company registration  related.

To obtain an Investor KITAS, you must have shares in an Indonesian PMA. Once you have shares, visa applicants can apply for the Investor KITAS. Although the Investor KITAS has been around for a while, it wasn’t until a few years ago the Indonesian government adjusted the Investor KITAS to be the fantastic product is it today. With no costly government fees and an option for a 2-year visa, its not wonder why the Investor KITAS is one of the most sought after visa options in Indonesia. Spouse visa to Jakarta

Foreign citizens that are married to Indonesian citizens and have their marriage certification registered within Indonesia may apply for a  Spouse KITAS.  For successful visa applications, we require documents regarding official marriage registration, as well as the standard documents required for the administrative processing.

The Spouse KITAS has a validity of one year and it can be renewed. The principal applicant may also convert the KITAS to a KITAP after it has remained valid for 2 consecutive years. The Spouse KITAP has a validity of 5 years and is a very popular choice for expatriates as they no longer need to be concerned by their visa expiration date every year. LetsMoveIndonesia wins the award for “Most Trusted Visa & Legal Agency in Indonesia”

In December 2022,  LetsMoveIndonesia  was invited to an event held by the National Awards Magazine which highlights and rewards top performers of industry. The company was selected as the undisputed winner of the prestigious award  “Most Trusted Visa & Legal Agency in Indonesia”.

It is due to our market leading approach to business and for being wholly responsible for introducing ethical values into our industry.

Our initiative to make Indonesia a safer place to do business, has helped encourage foreign businesses and investors to set up businesses within Jakarta.

We are proud to have won yet another award and thrilled that the hard work we do to improve visa and legal services for foreigners is being recognized by national bodies.

Remain safe from visa scams you found on the internet

In the last 2-years, there has been a sharp rise in visa scams from other internet sites, partly due to unemployment because of the Covid pandemic and partly because of opportunists trying to exploit foreigners due to the pandemic and border closures.

Many fake visa agents have been advertising visa services and scamming people with a frauded visa application. We hear horror stories daily from people who have lost their sponsorship, money or important documentation.

To spot visa scammers, make sure they have a real office, make sure they have a landline, type search terms in Google and see if they ever appear, join the Facebook group  “Visa & Law Indonesia”  and get recommendations.

Please remember scammers will use low prices and short administrative processing times to get your attention.

Obviously, we recommend working with LetsMoveIndonesia to ensure you don’t get scammed – We are after all voted  “The Most Trusted Visa & Legal Agency in Indonesia”.

How to apply for a Jakarta Multiple Entry Business Visa

In November 2022, the  Multiple Entry Business Visa  came back after a 2-year postponement due to the Covid pandemic. The visa is well received and one of the our most popular visa services.

The Multiple Entry Business Visa provides foreigners with a Multiple Entry Visa with a longevity of between 1 – 5 years.

The visa holder is able to then enter and leave as frequently as they wish, as long as they do not spend more than 60 days consecutively within the country.

This visa therefore is perfect for travellers that enter and exit Indonesia frequently.

In the past foreigners needed to travel to a foreign country to collect their visa, but thankfully now, all visas are processed using an electronic Visa (e-visa).

Applying for Indonesian Visa is Faster and Easier with e-Visa

To prevent the spread of COVID-19 transmission, the Indonesian government is continuously leveraging innovative responses such as the introduction of digital public services. The Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights has launched an electronic visa (e-Visa) application system aimed to provide ease of access, especially during the pandemic.

The e-Visa application system will also facilitate future foreign tourists who wish to visit Indonesia after the pandemic, making a positive impact on the development of tourism and creative economy of Indonesia. In the meantime, safe tourist destinations are being prepared in compliance with health protocols.

With the launch of this service, foreigners no longer need to visit the Republic of Indonesia Representative out of the country or the Immigration Office in the country to get a visa sticker on their passport. To enter Indonesia, they just need to apply for a visa online via this e-Visa application system.

The steps to apply for the Indonesian e-Visa are as follows:

1. Visit  https://visa-online.imigrasi.go.id/

2. Register

- Enter data and upload required documents (individual/ corporation)

- Wait for the email notification which contains the username and password

3. Apply for Visa

- Log in using the username and password

- Select the type of visa you wish to apply for, enter data, and upload required documents

- Make PNBP payments (Make sure the data and documents are correct. If the application is rejected, the payment shall not be refunded)

- If the application is approved, a notification will be sent via email

The application for e-Visa can be submitted from wherever the applicant is. The verification process will be quick, which is 3  (two) - 5 (five) working days, and then the visa will be sent to the applicant. In order to cut bureaucratic procedures, the applicant and the guarantor will not be required to appear in person and the visa will be sent directly via email. Once the foreign citizens (WNA) receive their e-Visa, they can immediately travel to Indonesia.

The ease of applying for an Indonesian visa will play an important role to facilitate the post-pandemic recovery of tourism and creative economy sectors. With this innovation, the number of tourists visiting Indonesian destinations is expected to grow after the pandemic.

  • Have sufficient living expenses while in Indonesia.

Almost all nationalities can obtain this Visa / KITAS.

Foreigners from following countries cannot apply for this Visa:

  • Afghanistan
  • North Korea

Unfortunately, one requirement to apply for this visa is to have an employment contract with an organization (business/ NGO/ governmental institution) that is registered outside of Indonesia. So you need to be formally employed by such an organization  to be able to apply for this visa.

Yes, you will get a KITAS with the E33G Visa.

KITAS is short for “Kartu Ijin Tinggal Terbatas” (temporary residency stay permit card). The Remote Worker Visa will grant foreign-nationals a KITAS which mean that they will subject to be a temporary resident in Indonesia.

The perks of being an Indonesian resident on KITAS is : opening a local bank account, buying vehicles under your own name, applying for a local driving licenses (Surat Ijin Mengemudi/ SIM A & SIM C), obtaining local insurance, and getting discounts at tourist destinations, hospitals, and many more.

However, there comes also responsibility when being an Indonesian resident. Beside obtaining the right to stay in Indonesia long-term, which will be covered by getting the KITAS Temporary Resident Permit, it is important to look into potential fiscal consequences – in Indonesia and also in your original home country.

Tax Residency in Indonesia

By having a KITAS, foreign nationals become an Indonesian tax resident and therefore must apply for an NPWP (Nomor Pokok Wajib Pajak/ Tax File Number) at the local tax office.

They must be responsible to file their annual tax report (usually in March).

Please contact a reputable tax consultant for more information about your tax status if you are a foreign nationals with KITAS (temporary resident) or KITAP (permanent resident).

Domicile registration SKTT

Foreign-nationals who live in Indonesia with KITAS or KITAP are also obligated to report their home address in Indonesia to local authorities such as: Banjar or RT/RW (local community), Desa  (local village), and sometimes to local police.

Any changes of the address and passport information must also be reported to the immigration office and local authorities. They also need to apply for their SKTT (surat keterangan tempat tinggal/ domicile letter) to the local Department of Civil Registration (Disdukcapil).

EPO/ ETK Process

One obligation as KITAS/ KITAP holders is to do the EPO/ETK process (Exit Permit Only) if you want to leave Indonesia for good. EPO/ ETK process must be done at the immigration office with the sponsor.

Check out our “Moving to Bali Guide” for more information when planning to move to Bali

The nature of your work must not involve dealing with Indonesian companies or Indonesian clients.

You strictly cannot work or get paid in Indonesia and provide paid services to Indonesian companies or Indonesian clients. You have to work for the company abroad and not offer any services here in Indonesia.

You can’t be employed therefore for example by a foreign company but be a Yoga Teacher, Real Estate Agent, or Coach here in Indonesia.

You can’t sell any products here in Indonesia and for  example you can’t  rent rooms in your villa (sublease to the guests). Foreigners have been deported because they rented their villa or single rooms.

There are 2 ways to apply for your Remote Worker (E33G) Visa:

(1)  Apply using our Visa Agent Service online

Prices and Services below

2) Apply directly online through the official Indonesian Immigration website .

Please note that if you encounter any problems when submitting your visa application, you need to contact the immigration department directly by yourself at [email protected].

(3) Get assistance from another visa agency.

When you are using assistance from the third party provider/agency (company), please make sure to choose the reliable and transparent company with a good rack record, There are many agencies that we would not recommend for various reasons.

You can apply onshore and offshore.

An offshore Application means, that you are NOT YET in Indonesia and apply from “outside”.

For remote worker visa (E33G), in case of an offshore application, you will first get a single entry Visa and then complete the KITAS process while in Indonesia.

An onshore Application means, who are ALREADY in Indonesia and are applying for a Visa or Stay Permit.

This process is called “Alih Status Keimigrasian (Change of the Immigration Status)”.

Onshore applications are available for quite a few Visa and Stay Permit Types. However, you cannot apply onshore for any Visa or Stay Permit, if you have arrived with a Visa on Arrival (simple Visit Visa/ VOA).

For remote worker visa/KITAS onshore applications you must have arrived at least with a 211A visit visa (tourism).

Unfortunately, you cannot change your immigration status onshore if you are coming to Indonesia with a Visa on Arrival (VOA).

You can only apply for the Remote Worker Visa onshore (while in Indonesia) if you have arrived with a 211A visit visa or hold another KITAs type (depends).

Unfortunately NO, you cannot set up nor run any business with your Remote Worker Visa/KITAS.

Your Spouse and Family can apply for “Dependent / Family / Spouse KITAS.

In general one ca say, that a remote worker has the flexibility to work from any location without the need to be in a fixed office environment. This means they can perform their job duties from home, a café, or anywhere they have internet access, and also anywhere in the world. They can be employed by a company, or self-employed.

A digital nomad, however, takes this concept further by integrating travel as a fundamental part of their lifestyle. They are a type of remote worker who lives abroad, and might frequently move, often working from various cities or countries, embracing a lifestyle that combines work with exploration and travel

During your stay in Bali, following fees for documents and services may occur:

  • Extension of the Visa/KITAS after one year
  • SKTT (Surat Keterangan Tempat Tinggal/ Domicile Letter): IDR 2,000,000
  • EPO (Exit Permit Only) to clear your name in the immigration system when you decide to leave Indonesia for good: IDR 1,500,000
  • Change of passport information/ address/ etc. to the immigration office: IDR 1,000,000
