Winnipeg Transit

Service Advisory Icon

Winnipeg Transit Plus hours of operations for trips are:

Monday – Friday 6 a.m. – 12 a.m. Saturday – 7 a.m. – 12 a.m. Sunday – 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.

On the following holidays, Winnipeg Transit Plus operates on a Sunday schedule: New Year’s Day, Louis Riel Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Terry Fox Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day (veterans and current serving personnel ride free), Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.

Trips may be requested up to one week in advance, and until 5 p.m. the day before you wish to travel.

Customers need to have the following information ready when calling to request a trip:

  • Your name and Winnipeg Transit Plus registration number
  • The date you require to travel
  • The exact street address (and building entrance) including the unit number of each location; pickup and drop off
  • The time you want to arrive at your destination
  • If there is a specific time you must be at your destination, the required arrival time
  • The time you want to be picked up for your return trip
  • If you will be travelling with an attendant or companion
  • What mobility equipment you will be using during transportation

Calls are answered in the order they are received, and trips are assigned on a first-come, first served basis to ensure equitable access. If a trip is available at the requested time, you will be informed immediately and provided with a 30-minute window for pickup, during which time you must be prepared to leave your place of pickup within five minutes.

If a trip is not available at your requested time, you will be offered an alternate trip time, or placed on a waitlist.

Our Winnipeg Transit Plus Representatives are instructed to be brief during busy hours so they can complete each call quickly and take other calls coming in to the Winnipeg Transit Plus office. As part of Winnipeg Transit Plus quality control efforts, calls to schedule trips are recorded to help us ensure that all customer calls are handled promptly, courteously and accurately.

Winnipeg Transit Plus does not guarantee rides; all requests are reviewed and scheduled based on availability. Customers on a waitlist who have not opted in for notifications are required to contact Winnipeg Transit Plus to check if their trip request can now be accommodated and collect their exact trip pick-up windows. All Winnipeg Transit Plus Policies and Guidelines are still applicable.

Tips for Requesting a Trip

  • Try to limit travel around lunch hours Monday to Saturday as it is a high demand time.
  • Know your registration number. It is the quickest way for us to find your information.
  • Tell us if you are moving or if you change your mobility equipment, phone number, or contact information.
  • Let us know if you will be travelling with mobility equipment or an attendant. We need to know this before we schedule the trip to ensure we have enough room for you, your attendant, and your equipment.
  • Provide the day, date and times (include a.m. or p.m.) you want to travel. Errors are less likely to occur if you specify, “Monday the 28th with a pick-up after 10 a.m.”
  • Provide the address you are travelling to and include the unit number and landmark if applicable – we are unable to book to an intersection.
  • leave home after a specific time (when you will be ready to go) OR
  • arrive at your destination no later than a specific time (scheduled appointment).
  • Do not add additional buffer time – our scheduling system will do that for you. Tell us the exact time of your appointment or you may be picked up too early and find yourself waiting longer for your appointment.
  • Do add enough time when making a trip request to ensure you are ready to travel, i.e., returning home from a medical appointment – select a time to return that you know you will be ready to go.
  • If you are attending a meeting that ends at 2 p.m., inform the service representative taking your trip request that you cannot return before 2 p.m.
  • If you are on a waitlist and have not opted-in for notifications, please contact Winnipeg Transit Plus to check if your trip has become available and to collect your pick-up window times. If you do not call in, your waitlisted trips may still be scheduled and are not automatically cancelled. If your vehicle arrives and you’re not there, your trip may be classified as a no-show
  • During your 30-minute pickup window, please be ready to leave as soon as the vehicle arrives and wait inside the outermost door of the designated pick-up spot. *The driver will wait five (5) minutes upon arrival within the 30-minute pick-up window to assist you onboard. If you are not ready to leave within that five (5) minute period, the driver will notify Transit Plus, you may be considered a no-show, and the vehicle will leave.
  • If you opt-in for notifications, you will receive a phone call or email notifying you approximately 15 minutes before the driver’s arrival.
  • Always call the automated service line or the Contact Centre if you have to cancel your trip (available 24/7). Give us as much time as possible so we have a better chance of providing trips to others with the time that was scheduled for you. If a trip is cancelled less than 30-minutes before the pick-up window begins, it will be considered a no-show .

The annual crime statistics report issued by the Winnipeg Police Service last week was chock full of bad news (shoplifting up 45%, violent crime up 31% over five years). Gold: winnipeg transit like riding a bus in gotham back to video.

Whether it’s stolen bikes, break-ins, altercations with thieves in stores, or just busted windows, everyone knows someone affected by it.

An easy way to experience the societal decay for yourself is by taking a bus. Especially after dark. In the last few months my work has had me riding a few routes crossing downtown to areas like the Misericordia and St. Boniface Hospitals, the west end and Portage Avenue. It’s like riding a bus in Gotham.

It’s easy to see the danger transit operators and fare-paying passengers face. Drunks, louts, tweakers and criminals brag about their latest escapades. When getting on or off at a stop, regular riders have their heads on a swivel, lest they be jumped, jacked, and have a knife put to their throat. That can be a life-changing trauma- and outgoing police chief Danny Smyth was either too incapable or inept to come up with a solution.

The City has touted a new transit patrol as a panacea but some residents may be thinking it’s something it isn’t.

Community Safety Team Lead Bob Chrismas explained, “ We are not transit employees or Transit fair enforcement. If they’ve asked us to come along, we’ll assist if there’s violence. ”

So they won’t be impacting the $6 Million freeloader problem directly. And they aren’t around as much as people think, as they do general community patrols as well.

The team has mobile units and is now a presence around the Health Sciences Center, the St. Boniface Hospital and Osborne Village, where Chrismas noted, “Starbucks closed due to violent incidents.“

Restricted by what he called limited resources and a small team of 21 officers, they’re “doing a couple of weeks of days and a couple of evenings and rotating through weekends.”

And increasingly this summer, the officers will be on board the buses, concentrating on the numbers 11, 15, 16 and 18 routes, all of which pass through downtown. They’re also periodically riding out to the suburbs, where usually (but not always) there are fewer problems.

Trying to ward off potential problems on the streets, foot patrols “walk up to people that aren’t normal transit users” and ascertain if they’re in distress or whether other agencies can help them. A key goal is to improve the safety of Transit drivers and supervisors. This crew specializes in de-escalation techniques in dealing with meth addicts and other hard-to-control characters, although they do carry extendable batons and handcuffs.

The police union has already filed a grievance about the program stepping onto their turf by manning buses. They maintain that four weeks of training simply isn’t sufficient to do what sure looks like police work. But, since Smyth and City Hall couldn’t figure out bus safety to start with, here we are.

Although the provincial legislation allows safety officers to carry pepper spray — and city Cadets do — Chrismas told me his team doesn’t. “That was my decision as the team lead. I didn’t see a purpose for it in the role that we’re fulfilling.”

I asked him about a rumour that his team was also going to be adding Tasers to their arsenal.

“Completely inaccurate,” he stated flatly. “Tasers – No. I believe those things are allowed under the regulation but we aren’t seeking to carry those.”

Having seen some unruly incidents on the bus lately, I wonder if Chrismas may need to rethink that. There are times the social worker thing isn’t what’s needed, it’s get the troublemakers off the bus ASAP.

Many of them don’t pay the fare in the first place and aren’t the type the safety officers would flag walking around. Fare-skippers seem to be more likely to start a fight, punch a woman in the head and swipe her phone, or grab a purse and bolt out the door, than someone who drops $3.25 into the fare box.

While Chrismas et al focus on “root causes” a lot of these troublemakers are ultimately, criminals. It’s the criminals that Winnipeg transit users — and those who refuse to ride a bus — fear. There’s your root cause.

Some 200 people were aboard the train traveling from the Czech capital of Prague crossing through Slovakia on its way to the Hungarian capital of Budapest when the accident took place shortly Thursday after 5 p.m. (1500 GMT) at a crossing near the town of Nove Zamky.

The train engine caught fire after the crash while the bus was badly damaged and broke into two parts.

All of the deaths were aboard the bus.

The minister, Jozef Ráž, said that heavy rains hit the area on Wednesday, the day before the crash, forcing the closure of the railroad track to all traffic.

Preliminary results from the investigation showed no technical or systemic errors had occurred, Ráž said.

“It was likely an individual human error which caused the train to appear on a track where it wasn’t supposed to be,” he said.

Five injured people from the bus were transported to hospitals in nearby towns and cities. The local hospital was closed Thursday because of flooding from the heavy rain overnight.

No charges to be laid in bus crash that left 17 dead near Carberry, Man.

Blind spots may have played a factor in obscuring view of oncoming semi, says crown prosecutor.

Social Sharing

No charges will be laid in the bus crash last year near Carberry — the deadliest in Manitoba history — for a variety of reasons, including a brain injury suffered by the bus driver and blind spots that may have obscured views of the oncoming semi-trailer truck.

RCMP Supt. Rob Lasson said following a complex investigation that was very difficult for loved ones of the 17 people who died, Crown prosecutors reviewed the evidence and recommended against pursuing charges.

"This tragedy severely rocked all of Manitoba and had a profound effect on all of us," Lasson said at a Wednesday news conference in Winnipeg.

"We hope to provide the 'why' of what happened … but in this case, we cannot say why the bus proceeded into the intersection that day when it was unsafe to do so."

RCMP and Crown attorney Chris Vanderhooft visited family members in Dauphin Tuesday to notify them of the news before the public announcement, Lasson said.

"It is apparent from all of the evidence that the driver, due to the blind spots in that vehicle and when he may have looked in that direction, did not see the semi truck travelling eastbound," Vanderhooft said.

"He did not hit the brakes, nor did he speed up to avoid the oncoming semi truck."

No charges in 2023 Manitoba bus crash that killed 17

Vanderhooft said the driver was licensed to drive the bus and had no alcohol or drugs in his system.

He suffered a major brain injury and, despite undergoing rehabilitation, remains unable to care for himself, Vanderhooft said.

"He is not in the position to make his own decisions with regards to his personal care or finances, and his condition is unlikely to improve," he said.

On June 15, 2023, a bus carrying 25 people — most of them seniors from Dauphin, Man., and the surrounding area — headed to a casino near Carberry for a day trip. It was hit by a semi, which had the right of way, at the intersection of Highway 5 and the Trans-Canada Highway, just north of Carberry.

It was the deadliest bus crash in Manitoba history, killing 17 people and leaving eight others seriously injured.

All of the evidence investigators would usually pursue in such a case was not available, Lasson said.

  • 'I don't know why I'm alive,' says survivor still recovering from deadly Manitoba bus crash a year ago

Investigators have been unable to interview the bus driver and don't anticipate that will change, he said.

"We do not have the driver's account about what happened that day to help us understand his reasoning or actions proceeding into the intersection," he said.

"This was a very tragic collision, and it happened because of a choice made by the bus driver. However, we cannot prove that that choice that day was the result of anything criminal."

A review of the bus driver's cellphone confirmed there were no calls or texts going out or coming in at the time of the collision, Lasson said. However, the semi-trailer truck dashcam showed the bus "proceeded when it was unsafe."

The evidence also suggested that though "blind spots would be a significant issue in this case," that wasn't necessarily wholly responsible for the collision either, Lasson said.

Manitoba prosecutor gives breakdown of moments leading up to deadly bus crash near Carberry

The complex investigation included talking to survivors, analyzing vehicles and securing forensic reports, RCMP said at a news conference earlier this month.

  • Manitoba RCMP say they've been unable to speak with driver in Carberry bus crash that killed 17
  • Consultations on overhaul of Carberry bus crash intersection to begin in coming weeks, minister says

The charges being considered were dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. RCMP submitted those charges to prosecutors for their review on Jan. 3 this year.

A police officer is seen walking on a road following a collision. Vehicle debris is pictured all over the road. A police truck is seen in the background with its doors open, and two officers standing at the back of it talking.

On Wednesday, Vanderhooft focused on the role blind spots played in potentially obscuring the bus driver's view of the oncoming semi.

He said in light of the blind spots, and because investigators were unable to interview the bus driver, the prosecution advised against laying criminal charges against the driver due to the unlikelihood of a conviction were the matter to proceed to trial.

Vanderhooft said that in order for the Crown to pursue charges in court, lawyers would have to show that the bus driver's actions "were a marked departure from the standard of a reasonable person in similar circumstances."

He said "momentary inattention" doesn't equate to dangerous driving.

"The Crown would not be able to prove that the momentary inattention of the bus driver or failure to see the semi truck, combined with the blind spots in the vehicle, constituted a marked departure from the standard of care of a reasonable bus driver in these circumstances," Vanderhooft said.

Staff Sgt. Sean Grunewald said RCMP feel families understood the situation after the meeting on Tuesday.

"Even though some may not agree, and that's OK, I believe that they feel that we put every ounce in to give them the answers that they were looking for," he said.

'Very conflicted' over decision on Manitoba bus crash charges: niece

Chantel Uhrich, a niece of Frank and Rose Perzylo, who were among those killed, said there wasn't likely to be a "good result" regardless of the decision prosecutors reached, because at the end of the day, 17 people are still gone.

But Uhrich also feels that if there's something blocking your view as a driver, it's still your responsibility to make sure the coast is clear.

  • Remembering the victims of the fatal Manitoba bus crash

"I think that if it was you or I that was in the same situation, and we proceeded into an intersection and we got into a car accident, I believe that there would be charges," she said.

"I'm very conflicted about it, because I understand that the driver, he's incapable of making decisions and he needs assisted care and he's got brain damage," said Uhrich.

"But at the same time, there were 17 people that were killed because of negligence."

Métis musician and TV host Ray St. Germain, dubbed ‘Winnipeg’s Elvis,’ dies at 83

By The Canadian Press

Posted June 26, 2024 3:56 pm.

Last Updated June 26, 2024 7:44 pm.

Ray St. Germain, the singer-songwriter and television personality nicknamed “Winnipeg’s Elvis” for his uncanny vocal likeness to the king of rock ‘n’ roll, has died.

The Manitoba Métis Federation confirmed his death and his family said on social media that the 83-year-old died of Parkinson’s disease at a local care centre on Tuesday.

St. Germain built a name for himself in several corners of Canadian entertainment and while he was perhaps best known as host of the nationally syndicated music program “Big Sky Country,” his legacy as an advocate for Métis culture also resonates.

“I’ve made many recordings but no big hits,” he wrote in his 2005 memoir titled “I Wanted to Be Elvis, So What Was I Doing in Moose Jaw?”

“I’ve played pubs, clubs, lounges, fairs, rodeos, festivals and wherever they needed entertainment, including countless charity gigs…. I have a lot of mugs.”

St. Germain started his music career at age 14 in the country band the Rhythm Ranch Boys, first playing the accordion and singing, and later adopting the guitar with a little inspiration from Elvis.

His first television appearance was on the cross-Canada singing competition “Talent Caravan” in 1958, where he won the local series by singing Billy Grammer’s “Gotta Travel On.”

As he grew into adulthood, St. Germain hit the road with shows across Canada, later joining guitar virtuoso Lenny Breau in the Mississippi Gamblers.

Some of his earliest singles instantly drew comparisons to Elvis, particularly his debut “She’s a Square,” where he imitates the U.S. singer’s famous growl.

After a stint in Toronto, St. Germain returned to Winnipeg to host CBC’s “Music Hop Hootenanny” from 1964 to 1966.

When that show was cancelled, CBC continued to hire him as a guest host on programs that included “Show of the Week” and “In Person,” where he welcomed rising stars Sylvia Tyson, Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot.

St. Germain found his groove hosting music programs on various TV and radio networks in the decades that followed, including the two-hour radio show “Métis Hour x2” which he helmed for two decades until his retirement in 2022.

He was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010.

St. Germain also put significant effort into boosting Métis culture. The Manitoba Métis Federation credits his song “The Métis” with helping him earn an Aboriginal Order of Canada in 1985 and before then, his 1973 release “I’m Mighty Proud I’m Métis” became an anthem for the Red River Métis Nation.

“Not many people were proud to be Métis then,” MMF president David Chartrand recalled Wednesday at a press conference to reflect on St. Germain’s influence.

“They were hiding their identity and the nation was not yet united as it is today. Ray, who he was, wanted to express his feelings and pride of being who he truly was — a proud Métis man.”

But his Métis roots were not always known to him, his wife Glory said at the press conference.

“When he grew up it was hidden, his parents didn’t tell him because it was hard for Métis people to express themselves and who they were,” she said.

When he learned of his ties to the community, he “wanted to make a difference,” she added. One of those efforts involved encouraging fellow Métis musicians to appear on the programs he hosted.

Earlier this month, a road in Winnipeg’s St. Vital neighbourhood was honorarily named Big Sky Country Way to recognize the show that ran for 13 years, and St. Germain’s cultural impact.

At the event, St. Germain performed publicly for the final time, delivering a rendition of Presley’s “It’s Now or Never” from his wheelchair.

“Yeah, I wanted to be Elvis when I was younger but I wouldn’t trade my life for his,” he wrote in the epilogue of his memoir.

“Besides, he never got to stay at the Harwood Hotel in Moose Jaw.”

No charges to be laid in Manitoba bus crash that killed 17 seniors heading to casino

bus trips winnipeg

By Brittany Hobson and Steve Lambert, The Canadian Press

WINNIPEG — A bus driver who drove into the path of a semi-trailer in western Manitoba last year was clearly at fault for the crash that killed 17 people but will not face charges, authorities said Wednesday.

“This was a very tragic collision, and it happened because of a choice made by the bus driver. However, we cannot prove that that choice that day was the result of anything criminal,” said RCMP Supt. Rob Lasson.

Lasson, along with other officers and a Crown attorney, explained the results of a year-long investigation into the crash on a section of the Trans-Canada Highway near Carberry, 160 kilometres west of Winnipeg.

The minibus, carrying 24 seniors from Dauphin to a casino, was travelling south on Highway 5 and nearing its destination on June 15, 2023, when it came to an intersection with the Trans-Canada.

Traffic on the Trans-Canada flows freely while vehicles on Highway 5 are met by a stop sign. They then proceed to a median, where there is a yield sign before they can go further. Weather conditions at the time were clear.

The bus stopped, made it to the median then proceeded through the yield sign, even though the truck, heading east on the Trans-Canada, was close and had the right of way, said Crown attorney Chris Vanderhooft.

“The bus driver did not appear to see the semi-truck coming,” Vanderhooft said.

Blind spots on the bus, which the driver’s company had been operating for about a month, played a role, he added.

The truck driver tried to avoid the crash but could not, Vanderhooft said. Dashcam video from the semi was a key part of the investigation.

RCMP said the video showed the truck had the right of way. The crash caused the bus to burst into flames and end up in a ditch.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene — ground ambulances and police, then a STARS helicopter. Survivors were taken to hospital in Brandon, and many were airlifted to the province’s major trauma centre in Winnipeg. STARS brought in reinforcements from Saskatchewan.

Some who initially survived were taken to hospital but later died. The 17th fatality was 79-year-old Catherine Day, who died a month after the crash.

The investigation found the bus driver was not on his cellphone at the time of the crash, and toxicology reports did not show impairment, Vanderhooft said.

The Crown considered charges of dangerous driving, but decided there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction.

“Momentary inattention does not constitute dangerous driving,” Vanderhooft said.

The bus driver suffered severe brain injuries and is unable to care for himself without aid. RCMP said it is unlikely they will ever be able to talk to him about the crash.

Don Stokotelny is among those connected to the tragedy.

His mother, Josephine Stokotelny, 86, was severely injured in the crash and has spent the last year recovering. She suffered brain damage, uses a walker to get around and is in assisted living.

He also knows the bus driver, who he says took care of the seniors “like they were his own.”

“I accept it as an accident,” Stokotelny said in an interview ahead of the one-year anniversary.

“We have chosen just to offer forgiveness and carry on.”

Police and Vanderhooft spent hours with the families on Tuesday explaining the decision not to authorize charges.

Staff Sgt. Sean Grunewald said families reacted with a range of emotions to the news.

“We feel that the families understood the situation…I believe that they feel we put every ounce to give them the answers that they were looking for.”

A memorial for those who died was unveiled earlier this month in Dauphin.
