When learning about the history and culture of Hawaii, you will also see the lava flow, which is changing hourly.

Later your helicopter will glide over the Halemaumau Crater and other national park sights, making your experience even more adventurous.

The video camera system will record the entire flight process, which you can purchase after the flight.

The flight is intended for six people, so this is also an excellent opportunity to meet new people or to go with your friends and family.

7. Big Island Spectacular Helicopter Tour

Duration: 2 hours Departure point: Waikoloa BOOK HERE

Indeed, this two-hour-long helicopter flight with Blue Helicopters will become the most unforgettable memory from your trip to Hawaii.

The company that continuously incorporates the latest in cutting-edge technologies and safety features offers incomparable passenger comfort.

You will have a great chance to discover the volcanic fury of the Big Island and get an up-close look at the famous Kilauea volcano, sometimes referred to as Madame Pele’s volcano, which has been continuously erupting since 1983.

Here you will see the lava bubbling up and flowing. Next, your aerial journey will include exploring the Hamakua Coast and the meandering valleys of the Kohala Mountains, rich with the most impressive waterfalls cascading down to the Pacific.

Flying over the Big Island in a helicopter

From the wide viewing windows of the helicopter, you will also see the Mauna Kea summit and the town of Hilo.

Along with the five passengers, you will hear your knowledgeable pilot via the two-way communication microphones, who is also a State of Hawaii Certified Tour Guide.

Only a helicopter tour allows you to see so many of Hawaii’s delights on a single ride and from a unique perspective.

In the end, when you land at your starting point, you will have a chance to purchase a USB in-flight video and photo package of your flight.

Every company is a little bit different but the general practical info remains the same!

So, you don’t really get as many doors-off experiences on the Big Island as you would get on Kauai . Most tours on the Big Island last from 50 minutes to 100 minutes (just depends on the trip).

You will have a chance to see volcanoes, waterfalls, coastal scenery, and more.

Helicopter tours on the Big Island

But, please note that the helicopter pilot has zero control over what Kilauea is doing at the moment so check before your flight to keep your expectations in check.

There are many departing points on the Big Island – Hilo , Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa , and Waimea. It really depends on where you are, but several resorts have helipads where you’ll find tours (as you can see above).

You do not automatically get a window seat! So, please work this out with the company before your flight. You may have to pay extra to get one.

Flying over Volcanoes NP

Most flights do not take more than 6 people… unless you book a private trip, of course!

Although you’re probably used to the advice that you should dress warmly for a trip to the skies, that certainly isn’t the case for a helicopter tour.

You can certainly wear shorts, open-toed shoes, and other light clothes if you wish.

You may find that it’s too hot to wear a jacket. However, it is recommended that you wear dark and solid colors to prevent your reflection from distracting the pilot.

Otherwise, you can largely wear whatever you want to!

Big Island Hawaii Helicopter Tour

Big Island HELICOPTER TOURS

With its four main districts, each with distinct geological characteristics and ecosystems, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a variety of tour options that our helicopter excursions fly over.

  • Kilauea Summit Area: The center of volcanic activity is the site of the Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, which gained notoriety lately for its amazing eruptions and lava lake.
  • East Rift Zone: Known for its dynamic volcanic landscapes, including new land formations and active lava flows that continuously reshape the area.
  • Mauna Loa: The largest subaerial volcano in both mass and volume on Earth, offering stunning views of massive lava fields and volcanic cones.
  • Chain of Craters Road: This area tells a dramatic geological story, where the road descends from the summit of Kilauea to the ocean, covering landscapes that have been repeatedly transformed by over nine miles of lava flows since 1986.

The tour offers an intriguing glance at the Chain of Craters Road, aptly named for its descent of 3,700 feet from the blazing summit of Kilauea to the Pacific Ocean. This route holds a spellbinding history of endings due to lava outpours, serving as an explicit demonstration of the island’s consistently changing nature driven by volcanic powers.

People seeking a more personal encounter can think about scheduling a private tour. This choice provides a customized trip to the most breathtaking views and undiscovered treasures on the island. It’s perfect for special occasions or for those who prefer a more exclusive experience.

The highlight for many is the active volcanic areas of Kilauea and the East Rift Zone, where you can witness the raw power of Earth’s internal processes. The Hawaiian hotspot fuels the volcanic activity that continues to shape and expand the Big Island, making it a unique geological hotspot globally. Here, the land is alive with flowing lava, steaming vents, and the creation of a new earth—a truly mesmerizing sight from above.

Every flight is an educational journey, as our experienced pilots share insights about the geology, history, and cultural significance of these volcanic giants. Their knowledge improves the visual spectacle with fascinating stories and facts about the island’s formation and its ongoing evolution.

Expect to be astonished by the island’s breathtaking landscape, which possesses volcanic deserts, spectacular waterfalls and verdant rainforests, from the unpaired vantage point of our helicopters. Regardless matter your interests—nature, adventure, or photography—this trip guarantees breathtaking vistas and a more profound knowledge of Hawaii’s natural beauties.

Join us for an adventure that not only highlights the scenic beauty of Hawaii but also educates and inspires awe with every mile flown over this dynamic landscape. Secure your seat on our next Helicopter tour of Big Island and witness the powerful beauty of the Big Island’s volcanic regions from the best seat in the sky.

Hawaii Volcanoes FAQs

As of 2023, there are 6 Hawaii volcanoes that are considered active. And the Big Island of Hawaii is home to 4 out of those 6. The active volcanoes on the Big Island include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The remaining active volcano is Haleakala on Maui. There is also a volcano off of Big Island’s coast that is underwater too!

Unless the volcanoes are actively erupting, you will not be able to see lava in Hawaii. Kilauea last erupted in December 2020.

While you won’t die if you quickly touch the lava, you will definitely get a horrible burn. I definitely don’t recommend it!

It depends on traffic, but it usually takes about 2 hours if you don’t make any stops. There are a lot of cool places to see along the drive from Kona, so I suggest planning for 3-4 hours to take in some sights along the way.

Usually, the best way to see the volcano in Big Island is to go on a Hawaii volcano tour! You can also enjoy some self-guided tours if you prefer to go at your own pace to view these active volcanoes.

The best volcano tours take you to see the Kilauea volcano and help you to explore Volcanoes National Park. There are even some that take you to some black sand beaches and take you on a day trip all around the island of Hawaii.

If you want to see the red, hot lava glow, then you will want to go very early in the morning or after it gets dark under the night sky. However, there are plenty of other awesome things to explore at the Big Island volcanoes, so you can visit any time you want!

Where to Stay in Volcano Hawaii

Now that you know what to do at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, let’s talk about accommodations. There are tons of options for places to stay in Volcano Hawaii for all price points.

Unless you want to go camping, the only place to stay inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Volcano House Hotel . It’s a historic Big Island hotel that is super convenient for exploring the park. And it’s great for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids !

Otherwise, your best bet is to stay at a vacation rental in Volcano Village. Some of my top picks include Hale Sweet Hale (featured on HGTV), At the Crater’s Edge , and Volcano Hideaway Hale (also seen on HGTV).
