Outer Hebrides

With their awe-inspiring landscapes, incredible array of sweeping beaches and unique way of life, the Outer Hebrides are simply unforgettable.

Whether you choose to visit the standing stones at Callanish, walk along stunning beaches or watch Harris’ famous tweed being handwoven, you’ll experience the unique and authentic experience that each island –  Barra, South Uist, North Uist , Harris and Lewis –  has to offer.

Top Tips for your Outer Hebrides Holiday

Beaches, beaches, beaches - Vatersay, Luskentyre, Uig Sands, Scarista...the Outer Hebrides are packed with stunning white beaches.

St Kilda - take a day trip to the remotest part of the British Isles and explore this long-abandoned island chain.

Calanais Standing Stones - you can get up close to these 4,000-year-old mysterious standing stones on the Isle of Lewis.

Barra Airport - even if you arrive by ferry, head for the cockle strand and watch a plane land on the beach. Great home-cooked food, too!

Visit the new Harris Distillery - their whisky's not mature yet, but you can be among the first to taste their gin.

Things To See & Do

Isle of Lewis ‘must do’ list:

Step back in time and wonder about the meaning and purpose of the standing stones at Callanish  – or Calanais in Gaelic. You can walk right among them and soak up the atmosphere across the millennia. Nearby Carloway Broch is one of the best-surviving examples of a fortified dwelling, not as ancient as the standing stones, but equally impressive. You can learn more about traditional island life in a blackhouse village, with its preserved thatched cottages. Stornoway boasts more-modern experiences, with a bustling social scene and arts centre, and is famous above all for its spicy black pudding – some claim it’s the best in Scotland – do try it at breakfast.

Isle of Harris ‘must do’ list:

You’ll be spoilt for choice along the south-west coast of the Isle of Harris, as one expansive white sandy beach after another unfurls before your eyes. Sometimes it’s hard to know where one ends and the next starts. On a sunny day, the contrasting pure turquoise waters give rise to many a comparison with the Caribbean, yet here you won’t need to wander far to find solitude and tranquillity, with not a sunbed in sight. On the opposite coast, travel the ‘Golden Road’ – a ribbon of tarmac meandering across a barren and rocky lunar landscape. You’ll still come across crofter’s cottages where you can watch Harris Tweed being woven and perhaps treat yourself to a special souvenir. And – if you’re feeling particularly adventurous – Harris is the best departure point for boat trips out into the Atlantic to the long-abandoned St Kilda archipelago, on the very edge of the British Isles (advance reservations vital – please ask us).

North & South Uist ‘must do’ list:

Explore more endless white-shell beaches along the western shores, and gaze at an unspoilt landscape of peat bog and heather-clad moorland, interspersed with pools of water – fabulous for photographs when the light is right. If you fancy a spot of fishing, then Uist’s thousands of freshwater lochs can answer your every whim. Get closer to nature at the RSPB reserve at Balranald, one of the best spots for wildlife in the UK. Sit by the visitor centre and listen for the distinctive rasping call of the rare corncrake, take the path to the shore or join one of the guided walks which take place through the summer months. Technically a different island, but easy to reach via causeway, Berneray is another beautiful wilderness, with great seal-spotting, fabulous views and  – you guessed it – more amazing beaches!

Barra and Eriskay ‘must do’ list:

There aren’t many places in the world where we’d recommend you spend an hour or two at the airport – even if you aren’t due to fly – but you won’t find another airport anywhere in the world like Barra’s …where the runway is a cockleshell strand, the timetable varies with the tide and you can enjoy delicious home-cooking while you wait. There’s another great beach just over the dunes, too. It’s easy to understand the naming of the main town as Castlebay – from whichever direction you approach, your eyes will be drawn to Kisimul Castle, ancestral clan seat of the MacNeils, seemingly floating in the bay. Hop aboard the wee boat run by Historic Scotland and see it up close for yourself. Chat to locals in the bar about life on the island and get a taste of it by trying some tooth-achingly sweet but delicious Hebridean Toffee. Tick off the neighbouring islands. Vatersay’s apple-core beaches are a stunning spectacle, though tainted with tragedy as the sites of a major shipwreck in 1843 and plane crash in 1944 – reminders that these are remote and wild shores. The most famous shipwreck of all – the inspiration behind Whisky Galore!  – happened on the Isle of Eriskay, reached by a short ferry-ride from Barra. Take time to linger by the dock and beautiful Prince Charlie Bay. Perhaps also take a drive around the island – it’s not that big – and spot some cute Eriskay ponies before stopping for a quick refreshment in Am Politician – a simple-looking bungalow, now a pub, but which houses many a relic of the ship with its doomed whisky cargo.

Travelling To & Around

The islands are connected by ferry routes from Oban and Ullapool, on the West coast of Scotland, and for those who prefer shorter crossings you can also access the islands from the North of the Isle of Skye. You can then travel by a series of causeways and ferry crossings between the islands. Grappling with the timetables – sometimes subject to tidal change – is not for the faint-hearted, however, so why not leave it to us? We can work out the best combinations and timings to ensure you get the most out of your adventure

If time is short, there are also flight connections from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Lewis, and of course the unique experience of landing on the beach runway on the Isle of Barra is on many “bucket-lists”,  with daily services from Glasgow. As a fully bonded tour operator, licensed with the Civil Aviation Authority, McKinlay Kidd can offer fly-drive holidays, complete with one-way car hire, flights, accommodation and inter-island ferries. Leave it to us and enjoy a stress-free holiday!

The ultimate guide to Scotland's magical Hebrides islands

Kerry Walker

An emerald shore receding behind, a sea breeze in your face, a dolphin surfing the bow wave as escort. The magic begins as soon as you board the ferry from Scotland’s rugged west coast and head for Scotland 's Hebrides islands.

This scattering of more than 50 inhabited and uninhabited islands, islets and skerries is like a world unto itself – thrillingly isolated, wind-battered, sea-smashed  and with a beauty that is off the charts. From the ragged mountains of Skye to the snow-white beaches and cerulean seas of Harris, the mysterious standing stones of Lewis to the whisky heaven of Islay, these islands lift spirits in every possible sense of the expression.

Some of Europe’s most alluring beaches are on these Scottish islands (but you’ll need to be made of stern stuff to brave the waters and don’t expect to return home with a tan), while remoteness and underpopulation mean that wildlife displaced elsewhere still flourishes. You’re almost guaranteed to see seals and whales; otters, dolphins and porpoises are also regularly sighted.  Seabirds – gannets, fulmars, puffins and more – thrive on jagged coasts, and geese of various species often outnumber residents. That very same isolation – Edinburgh seems another world, and London is outside the Hebridean solar system – means that life has traditionally been a tough, self-reliant affair.

Visiting the Hebrides is about being outdoors. Throughout the islands, there’s great walking, from pacing the sublime sandy beaches of Barra, Tiree or Harris to tackling the rugged challenge of Skye’s Cuillin Hills or the Paps on Jura. To get out on the water, sea-kayaking is a great option on Barra, Skye and other islands. Bicycles are easily taken on ferries, though high winds can make for tough pedaling at times. So lace up the hiking boots, grab binoculars or a paddle, fortify yourself with a local dram and throw yourself into the wilds no matter what hand the weather deals you.

Woman standing on a cliff looking out to sea on the Isle of Islay, Scotland

Visit Islay & Jura to try some of the world’s best whiskies

Mellow, relaxed and so friendly that even passing strangers stop for a wee chat, Islay (‘eye-la’) is the home of several of the world’s best whiskies – many famed for their peatiness – whose names reverberate on the tongue like a pantheon of Celtic deities: Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Bunnahabhain, Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, Bowmore.

Wilder and more rugged, the adjacent island of Jura likes long, dark and low off the coast like a Viking longship and provides a tremendous hit of scenery, with its brooding twin hills, the Paps, providing habitat for an enormous deer population. The ferocious Corryvreckan whirlpool churns away at the north of the island, near where George Orwell wrote 1984. The author summed it up neatly as “a very un-get-at-able place”.

What to do

Top billing goes to the distilleries on Islay and Jura, which have whisky enthusiasts in raptures, among them Ardbeg , with its magnificent 10-year-old, Bowmore , which malts its own barley, Laphroig, where you can taste famously peaty whiskies, and the Isle of Jura Distillery . All welcome visitors and run tours and tastings. More expensive tours throw in more malts and take you further behind the scenes. It’s worth booking in advance online or by calling ahead.

Cracking seafood (langoustines and crabs fresh off the boat, hand-dived scallops, and tasty mussels and oysters), days spent roaming machair-fringed bays lapped by turquoise seas and brilliant wildlife watching (keep an eye out for grey seals, white-tailed sea eagles, barnacle geese and otters) ramp up Islay’s appeal beyond the dram. Hop on Islay Sea Safaris to spot all of Islay and Jura’s distilleries in a single day. Their customized tours from Port Ellen also include birdwatching trips and visits to Jura’s remote west coast and the Corryvreckan whirlpool, one of the most notorious tidal whirlpools in the world.

Whisky Barrels on the Coast of Islay

Where to stay

Accommodation is like gold dust on Islay and Jura for the number of visitors they receive in spring and summer, so always book ahead. Get the best of Islay seafood and whisky, as well as seriously comfortable Victorian accommodation, at the Port Charlotte Hotel , or camp or stay in a self-catering cottage at Kintra Farm amid the dunes at the southern end of Laggan Bay.

How to get to Islay

Loganair flies up to three times daily from Glasgow to Islay, and Hebridean Air Services operates twice daily on Thursday from Oban to Colonsay and Islay. There are two ferry terminals: Port Askaig on the east coast, and Port Ellen in the south. Ferries are run by CalMac .

A car ferry shuttles between Port Askaig on Islay and Feolin on Jura. There is no direct car-ferry connection to the mainland. From April to September, Jura Passenger Ferry runs from Tayvallich on the mainland to Craighouse on Jura.

Islay & Jura might be for you if: You’re a fan of whisky and wilderness.

Islay & Jura might not be for you if: You’re looking for serious mountains.

Houses by the beach under a cloudy blue sky in Iona, Scotland

Find mountain drama and holy marvels on Mull and Iona

All of the islands are ravishing, but Mull really hits the scenic high notes, with wild mountains and spectacularly eroded dropping abruptly to startlingly turquoise waters. From great crags of black basalt to blindingly white sands, this is an island for slowing the pace for a spell and wholeheartedly embracing nature.

Birds of prey glide above the highest peaks, otters can be spotted along the shore, while the west coast is good for watching whales, dolphins and porpoises. You’ll for sure see seals, too, both the Atlantic gray (look for its Roman nose) and the common seal (recognizable by its doggy face).

What do do

Mull’s characterful main town, Tobermory, is an instant heart-stealer, with its row of colorful houses, Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust spotlighting local marine life, bijou distillery , excellent restaurant serving sustainable seafood and good old-fashioned pub , near the pier on the harbourfront. Even here, the focus is on the wild outdoors, with hillwalking, whale-watching excursions and boat trips to weird Fingal’s Cave, a 60m-deep chasm of hexagonal pillars, on uninhabited Staffa .

If you’re up for more, you could clamber up 966m Ben More , Mull’s highest peak, and the only island Munro outside Skye, for stirring views out across the islands. Or grab your hiking boots for the adventurous eight-mile return stomp to the phenomenal rock formations of the Carsaig Arches at Malcom’s Point.

A five-minute ferry ride from Fionnphort on Mull, the holy island of Iona weaves its own spell. St Columba sailed from Ireland and landed here in 563, establishing a monastic community with the aim of Christianizing Scotland. Its scriptorium produced some of the most important illuminated manuscripts of the period, including, allegedly, the Book of Kells now in Dublin’s Trinity College. Dotted with majestic stone crosses and monastic ruins, this emerald teardrop of an island is now a place for solitude seekers and pilgrims. The heavily restored abbey is the island’s spiritual heart.

Where to stay

There’s plenty of charming places to stay on Mull, from back-to-nature campsites to B&Bs and luxurious small hotels. For something fancier, Highland Cottage in Tobermory is enchantingly intimate, with antique-filled rooms and a hearty welcome. On a working sheep croft at Iona’s northern tip, the Green Shed is lovely, with eco-friendly self-catering digs decorated with flair and upcycled furniture and riveting sea views.

How to get to Mull

CalMac has three car ferries that link Mull with the mainland: Oban to Craignure (the busiest route), Lochaline to Fishnish and  Tobermory to Kilchoan.

Mull & Iona might be for you if: You love wildlife, mountains and ancient abbeys.

Mull & Iona might not be for you if: You want to just rock up without booking ahead.

Girl hiking towards The Old Man of Storr, Scotland

Getting a natural high on the Isle of Skye

The Vikings called it sky-a, or ‘cloud island’, in old Norse, alluding to the clouds that often hovered above the menacing Cuillin Hills, which entice hardcore hikers and mountaineers with some of Scotland’s gnarliest peaks and dizzying views. But even seen from ground level, the Isle of Skye is just stunning. An ethereal light squeezes through the clouds and bathes a rugged splendor that stretches across heather-brushed moors, glittering lochs and sea cliffs razoring above pounding surf.

Skye delivers the kind of big wilderness for which Scotland is so famous – and all neatly packaged into one island. But it’s no secret, so dodge the biggest crowds (and midges) by visiting in spring or autumn. That said, most visitors stick to Portree, Dunvegan and Trotternish – you can always find peace if you’re willing to venture further afield.

Bring your boots. Hikers are in their element with some of the roughest, toughest and most soul-stirring trails in the country. Ease yourself in gently on short hikes through the remote, boggy, loch-speckled, strikingly beautiful glens of Strath Mor, keeping an eye out for red deer and otters, or on moderately challenging ramble to the Old Man of Storr , an iconic pinnacle of crumbling basalt on the Trotternish Peninsula. Or throw yourself in at the deep end with a pulse-racing, nerve-jangling five-mile trek up 992m Sgùrr Alasdair, the loftiest peak in the Black Cuillin, where dark, fierce fangs of rock punch above the sea. Its summit has sensational views all the way to the isles of Rhum, Eigg and Canna. For rock climbers, the Inaccessible Pinnacle (In Pinn) is the Holy Grail. You might need a guide .

The secluded coves and sparkling sea lochs indenting Skye’s coast are best seen with your bum in a kayak and a paddle in your hand, some say. Whitewave Outdoor Centre and Skyak Adventures get you out on the water.

The outdoors is the big draw, for sure, but when the mist descends or the dreich weather blows in, there’s still plenty to do, from castles like mighty Dunvegan on the vast MacLeod Estate to the fascinating Skye Museum of Island Life , zooming in on the island’s crofting heritage, and jolly pubs where you can shelter from the drizzle with a pint.

Skye is insanely popular and accommodation is therefore plentiful, from camping and glamping to backpacker hostels and high-end hotels. Nevertheless, you should book ahead. Harborside Portree is Skye’s largest and liveliest town, with options ranging from simple, homely B&Bs to the luxe Cuillin Hills Hotel , with broad views out to sea and up to the mountains.

Housed in the old village school, Skyewalker Hostel in Minginish has a cool mix of rooms, glamping huts and a glass-domed outdoor seating area.

How to get to Skye

Skye became permanently tethered to the Scottish mainland when the Skye Bridge opened in 1995. The crossing is free. There are buses from Glasgow to Portree and Uig via Crianlarich, Fort William and Kyle of Lochalsh, plus a service from Inverness to Portree.

Despite the bridge, there are still a couple of ferry links between Skye and the mainland. Ferries also operate from Uig on Skye to the Outer Hebrides. The CalMac ferry between Mallaig and Armadale is very popular on weekends and in July and August. The Glenelg–Skye Ferry runs a tiny vessel (six cars only) on the short Kylerhea to Glenelg crossing.

Skye might be for you if: You are mad about big mountains and hardcore hiking.

Skye might not be for you if: You want to totally escape the crowds.

Atlantic Puffin with sand eels in its beak in Scotland

Give the world the slip in the Outer Hebrides

When the sun breaks through the clouds on Outer Hebrides (or Western Isles), illuminating the velvet pleats of mountains, bracken-cloaked moors and machair-draped dunes that drop to frost-white sands fizzing into a sea of exquisite turquoise, it’s like witnessing the dawn of creation. Far removed from civilization, there are times you will feel like the last soul on earth here, especially if you come in the hush of spring or autumn. Times when you will forget the century we live in, walking barefoot on mile-long beaches made afresh by the tides, looking for otter footprints, witnessing a fiery sunset after a storm, or foraging for cockles and mussels in rocky bays.

These glorious isles – some just wee specks of rock – are  isolated, windswept, treeless places that have traditionally subsisted on fishing, weaving and livestock, though renewable energy is increasingly big business. You’ll hear the gentle lilt of Scottish Gaelic everywhere here as it’s still a working language.

What to do in the Outer Hebrides

The principal island, its northern half called Lewis and its southern Harris, is a terrific starting point, with out-of-this-world coastal scenery, traditional turf-roofed blackhouses, lonely peat bogs dimpled with lochans and the famous Harris tweed.

Mountainous and virtually roadless, North Harris is the hiking dream. South Harris by turn beguiles with staggeringly lovely white-sand beaches like Luskentyre and Scarista, swirling into jade waters. They are all the more enchanting for often being deserted.

Heading to the far northern tip of Lewis brings you to the lighthouse-topped Butt of Lewis, battered by the North Atlantic. The hinterland is largely desolate peat moorland, glittering with lochans. The island is littered with mysterious prehistoric sites, most famously the late-Neolithic standing stones of Callanish , weighing in at some four and a half millennia, roughly contemporary with the Great Pyramid of Giza, and Dun Carloway , a 2000-year-old, dry-stone broch.

To the south, the lonely Uist islands are prime nature-watching territory and connected by a causeway, while little Barra offers memorable sea-kayaking and the chance to watch the Glasgow flight land on the beach.

Where to stay on the Outer Hebrides

Given how remote they are, there’s a surprisingly great assortment of places to stay in the  Outer Hebrides, from basic campsites and hostels to B&Bs, sleek, architect-designed hotels and eco-friendly beach houses. A lot of accommodation swings with the seasons, closing down during the dark, rainy months from October to March. For hostels with a dash of history and incredible views, check out the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust . Or if you fancy staying in a conserved village of traditional blackhouses on the Isle of Lewis, with the crashing Atlantic as your wake-up call, try Gearrannan Holiday Cottages .

How to get to the Outer Hebrides

Loganair flights operate to Stornoway from Edinburgh, Inverness and Glasgow. There are also flights (weekdays only) between Stornoway and Benbecula. There are daily Loganair flights from Glasgow to Barra, and from Monday to Saturday to Benbecula. At Barra, the planes land on the hard-sand beach at low tide, so the schedule depends on the tides.

There are two or three CalMac ferries a day to Stornoway, one or two a day to Tarbert and Lochmaddy, and one a day to Castlebay and Lochboisdale (always weather permitting – it can get wild out here!).

The Outer Hebrides might be for you if: You love wild scenery, beaches and prehistory.

The Outer Hebrides might not be for you if: You want more action – it’s remote and quiet here.

The Majestic Line has been hosting Scottish cruising holidays on the waters off the West Coast for 20 years. Most of our cruises depart from Oban, gateway to the Highlands and the Islands of the Outer and Inner Hebrides – sailing in these waters is the best way to explore the islands and the beautiful coastline of Scotland. Our five small cruise ships are beautiful floating hotels and have been designed to access remote and sheltered anchorages that larger boats find inaccessible. Sailing from April to October we make the most of the longer summer days with opportunities for walking ashore and wildlife spotting or just relaxing onboard. You can find out more about where we go on our Cruising Area.

The Scottish Small Ship Cruising Holiday

Our five small cruise ships offer you a truly unique experience, a Scottish holiday with a difference. Our converted fishing trawlers, Glen Massan and Glen Tarsan , provide accommodation for up to 11 guests, whilst our purpose built vessels, Glen Etive and Glen Shiel , can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests. Each of those boats has a crew of four onboard; Skipper, Chef, Engineer and Steward.

For 2024, we are delighted to relaunch Glen Rosa following a extenisve refurbishment. With a crew of Skipper and Chef, she can accommodate up to 6 guests in 3 ensuite cabins.

Our crews provide the very best in Scottish Hospitality and do their best to ensure your cruise runs smoothly. Meals are freshly prepared on board utilizing the wonderful Scottish Larder with our Chefs focusing on locally sourced seasonal produce – seafood is of course a highlight for many on our cruises with mussels from Loch Spelve, langoustine and occasionally a lobster caught in the creels that we keep on board.

The Majestic Line offers a choice of 17 different cruise itineraries from 3 nights , 6 nights or 10 nights . We cruise waters surrounding some of Scotland's iconic islands such as Islay, Jura, Mull, Skye, St Kilda, Staffa and Iona, the small isles of Rum, Muck and Eigg. You can go ashore to enjoy the fantastic scenery, take a walk, visit one of the malt whisky distilleries or gin distilleries, watch the local wildlife. We also operate a river cruise through the Caledonian Canal and Neptune’s Staircase to Loch Ness and sail to Inverness. Discover our Cruises .

The seas off the West Coast of Scotland provide an incredible habitat for all sorts of marine wildlife and our guests regularly see dolphins, porpoises, seals, basking sharks, minke whales, orca, not to mention the amazing sea birds from puffins and petrels to gannets and guillemots. Escorted tour

Discover the landscapes and big skies of scotland's magical western isles.

Join us on a tour of Scotland's magical Western Isles, a land of unspoilt, timeless beauty, with spectacular scenery, ancient history and unique Gaelic culture.

Perched on the very edge of Britain, these beautiful isles have been continuously inhabited for more than 6000 years, and this trip will take you to the pristine sands of their vast, empty beaches, mountains and moorlands rich in flora and fauna, and villages with a pace of life long forgotten on the mainland.

Start your Hebridean adventure on the Isle of Skye, the largest island in the Inner Hebrides, where you'll visit Dunvegan Castle, the stronghold of the chiefs of MacLeod for nearly 800 years, and Portree, with its pastel-coloured houses lining the harbour.

Next it's on to Stornoway, to discover the intriguing archeological monuments of Lewis and Harris, including the ancient Calanais Standing Stones, which predate Stonehenge by hundreds of years, and the wonderfully-preserved Carloway Broch, a dry-stone fortified tower dating back some 2000 years.

There's also a trip to the Butt of Lewis, the northernmost tip of Lewis, which holds the title of the windiest place in the UK, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Battling the wind will reward you with unforgettable views of a dramatic rocky coastline and a grand lighthouse looking out over the north Atlantic.

Throughout your trip you'll be staying in a series of well-located hotels, all of which will be three-stars and with cosy bedrooms with private facilities for a restful night in between your adventures.

You'll board the coach to head towards the Isle of Skye, a drive of around five hours from Edinburgh and two hours from Inverness. While the journey is long, it's incredibly scenic, and includes a break at the famous Eilean Donan Castle on the shores of Loch Duich.

On arrival on Skye you'll check into Hotel Dunollie, your home for the next two nights, where you'll enjoy a dinner with the rest of your group.

After breakfast at your hotel, you'll set off on a tour of the Isle of Skye. You'll pass by the famous Cuillin Hills mountain range, where jagged peaks are often obscured by a veil of mist, as you make your way to Dunvegan Castle.

This castle was the stronghold of the chiefs of MacLeod for nearly 800 years, and is said to be the oldest continuously occupied family home in Scotland. The castle is steeped in rich history which you'll discover as you visit.

Later in the afternoon, you'll head into Skye's main town, Portree, where you'll see its delightful pastel-coloured houses around the harbourfront, set against a backdrop of dramatic scenery.

Following an early breakfast this morning, you'll transfer to Ullapool, where you'll catch the ferry to Stornoway.

You'll be sailing for around two and a half hours before arriving in Stornoway and exploring the pretty capital of Lewis and Harris, with its dramatic landscapes and unique Gaelic culture.

Later on, you'll check into your next hotel, the cosy Cabarfeidh Hotel where dinner will be served this evening.

You'll head to Harris today, with its towering mountains and rugged coastline to the east, and its miles of pristine beaches lapped by Atlantic waves to the west.

Your first stop will be Rodel Church, one of the grandest mediaeval buildings in the Western Isles. You'll then explore the little port of Tarbert, before continuing to the fascinating Calanais Standing Stones, a collection of almost 50 ancient stones erected 5,000 years ago.

It's then a short walk from the road to the beautifully-preserved Carloway Broch, a circular dry-stone fortified tower dating back some 2000 years.

You'll also visit the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village with its typical crofting buildings to get a fascinating insight into the lives of the islands' inhabitants past and present.

This morning, following breakfast, you'll head to the Butt of Lewis, on the northern tip of Lewis, the final location of your Hebridean adventure and the northernmost tip of the Outer Hebrides. Hold on to your hat - this is the windiest place in the UK, according to the Guiness Books of Records.

See the lighthouse designed by David Stevenson and ancient rocks known as the Lewisian Gneiss before continuing your journey to Ullapool.

You'll set sail in the early afternoon for the crossing to Ullapool then follow a delightfully scenic route through Wester Ross to Newtonmore or Carrbridge and on to Gairloch where you'll check in at your final hotel.

After a final breakfast at your hotel you'll begin your journey to Inverness (one hour's drive) or Edinburgh (three hours' drive) to catch your flight home.

Beautiful Isle of Arran

Enjoy wildlife spotting on Arran

Welcome to the Isle of Arran, known for its heather-cloaked landscapes. Why not try a hike with views of the craggy peaks of Goat Fell and see if you can spot Scotland’s ‘Big Five’: the Golden Eagle, red deer, red squirrel, otter and harbour seal, all of which can be found on Arran.

Explore the woodland and gardens of Brodick Castle, and marvel at the Neolithic treasures and huge upright slabs at the Machrie Moor Stone Circle. Your stop wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Isle of Arran Distillery and a taste of their distinctive malt.

Islay's whisky and nature

Fire up your spirit of discovery on 'Whisky Island'

Islay, the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’, is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, with rugged uplands and coastline . The island is the proud home of world-famous peaty single malts – but that's far from the only reason to visit.

Islay is a wildlife haven, home to over 200 species of birds – including oystercatchers, gannets and Golden Eagles. From its sandy beaches, you can sometimes spot dolphins and basking sharks.

Port Ellen is the gateway to three of the island’s nine distilleries. Of course, no trip to Islay is complete without a 'wee dram' from one of these famous and historic whisky producers, including Laphroaig and Ardbeg.

Sustainable Isle of Gigha

Discover a slice of paradise in the Hebrides

Today our Scottish isles cruise takes us to tiny Gigha (pronounced ‘Gee-a’), a little sandy slice of paradise in the Hebrides. The island is community-owned, bought by its 163 residents in 2002, and has a sustainable local economy. Why not try some of its seafood, such as Gigha halibut and oysters.

At only seven miles long, the only way to get around Gigha is on foot or by hiring a bike. Visit the woodland gardens of Achamore House and admire the colourful rhododendrons. Then explore white sandy coves and the turquoise waters along the coast, such as the Bàgh Rubha Ruaidh and Bàgh na Dòirlinne beaches.

The spirit of Iona

See Iona's sacred abbey and Fingal's Cave on Staffa

Your adventure continues to Iona, off the coast of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. You can visit the restored 6th century abbey, one of Scotland's oldest and most sacred Christian pilgrimage sites. Or enjoy a hike with the Expedition Team up Dùn I for breathtaking views of St Columba's Bay – and take a sip from the 'Well of Eternal Youth'.

We’ll also sail to the Treshnish Isles – home to Atlantic Puffins, razorbills and grey seals. At nearby Fingal's Cave, marvel at the hexagonal basalt columns, superb natural acoustics and mesmerising, coloured waters.

Expedition day

Explore the tranquil southernmost islands of the Outer Hebrides

Today, we’ll explore the southernmost islands of the Outer Hebrides.

We’ll attempt a nature landing on the white sand beaches of Vatersay, located at the beginning of the renowned Hebridean Way. The mighty wind and waves of the Atlantic have carved sheltered harbours here, allowing settlements to arise as far back as the Neolithic period. Explore the rich history and admire the tranquil beauty of this tiny island, before heading south to remote Mingulay.

Abandoned by its resident population a century ago, Mingulay is home to some of the largest bird colonies in the Hebrides. Puffins, guillemots, fulmars, kittiwakes and more make their nests across the island, including on the towering Carnan Cliffs, a protected breeding area. If conditions allow, we’ll take our small expedition boats around the island on the lookout for some of these magnificent birds.

Stalwart Stornoway

Experience ’Scotland’s Stonehenge’ and find your tweed

We travel next to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, home of the famous Harris Tweed cloth. We'll visit Gothic-style Lews Castle, with its trails and fantastic views. Don’t miss 'Scotland's Stonehenge', the 5,000-year-old Callanish Standing Stones, and Dùn Carloway, the best-preserved Iron Age broch in Scotland.

We'll also cruise the wild and beautiful Shiant Isles, a tiny archipelago set in the Minch Strait. One of the most important breeding colonies for seabirds in Europe, keep an eye out for European Shags, Common Eiders, Northern Fulmars and Great Skuas in the surrounding waters or on volcanic ledges.

Isles of beauty

Get close to dramatic scenery and wonderful wildlife on Skye and Eigg

We’ll sail to Loch Scavaig on the Isle of Skye, where dramatic scenery surrounds us. “The wildest scene in the Highlands” – that's how the Victorian poet Lord Tennyson described Loch Coruisk and the surrounding craggy peaks of the Cuillin Mountains. We'll put on our hiking boots to explore the loch with the Expedition Team.

Our next stop is the remote Isle of Eigg, home to incredible wildlife. You might spot Golden and White-Tailed Eagles, Red Throated Divers, stonechats, seals, dolphins and porpoises. Stroll along the white sands of Laig Bay to the quartz beach where the sand sings, or hike to the top of An Sgùrr.

Mull’s Colourful Fishing Port

Get ready for the dreamy beauty of the Sound of Mull

Brightly coloured Georgian houses line the waterfront in the picturesque fishing port of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. Learn about the local heritage at the Mull Museum, try a dram of local whisky, stroll around the loch in Aros Park or pay a visit to the Baliscate Standing Stones.

The Isle of Mull is a magnet for birders. It has the highest breeding density of Golden Eagles in Europe, and White-tailed Eagles can often be seen soaring above the coast. We may also explore Loch Sunart, a Marine Protected Area known for otters, dolphins and porpoises.

Colonsay birds and blooms

Immerse yourself in unspoilt island beauty

Take a coastal walk on the Isle of Colonsay and enjoy breathtaking views from Kiloran Bay and Plaide Mhòr. Or if you’re lucky enough to be in a kayak, you may catch sight of whales, porpoises and dolphins.

Flora thrives on Colonsay, with over 400 species of plants present. You’ll see some of them in the woodland gardens of Colonsay House. It's a paradise for birdwatchers, with choughs, Red Northern Divers, eagles, fulmars, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and shags among the birds you can spot. Be sure to listen out for the rattle of the elusive corncrake.

Back to Glasgow

Your island-hopping odyssey comes to an end in Scotland’s biggest city

Your adventure to the wild Scottish Isles ends back in Glasgow (Greenock).

Lying on the shores of the Firth of Clyde with views across to the high hills of Argyll, Glasgow’s impressive fishing and shipping heritage is manifest in the Victorian architecture of the west end of town. It’s well worth exploring this area some more if you have time before you head home.

Full Tour Itinerary

Select Day:

Day 1 - Edinburgh - Glen Coe - Inverness

We leave Edinburgh behind and travel towards Stirling, famous for its mighty castle.

Our scenic drive takes us along the beautiful banks of Loch Lubnaig then on through “bonnie” Strathyre towards Glen Ogle and Glen Dochart. After climbing the “Black Mount”, we reach the vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor , which stretches out ahead of us.

The sad story of Glen Coe is retold as we stop to view the imposing yet sinister beauty of Scotland’s most famous glen.

Fort William sits by the banks of Loch Linnhe and in the shadow of mighty Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain.

During our drive through the majestic Great Glen , we’ll hear stories of clan battles, folklore and myths that have been handed down through the generations.

The final part of today's journey takes us along the banks of Loch Ness, home to the elusive monster - Nessie !

Our home for tonight is in Inverness, the bustling Capital of the Highlands.

Overnight: Inverness

Day 2 - Inverness - Arnol Blackhouse - Stornoway (Isle of Lewis)

After leaving Inverness behind, we enjoy grandstand views of the Moray Firth as we cross the Kessock Bridge and travel through the Black Isle.

The fishing port of Ullapool sits on Loch Broom and is where our ferry awaits to sail across The Minch to reach Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. The sailing will take 2 hours 45 minutes, and our cruise ferry boasts extensive lounge and dining facilities.

On arrival, we reboard our coach to explore our new island surroundings. The Arnol Blackhouse is a fully furnished, traditional Lewis thatched house that was once the residence of a Hebridean crofting family and their animals. Today, as we will discover, it is preserved almost as the family left it in 1965.

These islands are famed for the production of Harris Tweed , so the last visit of the day is to a weaver to see the fabric being woven using traditional methods - a truly fascinating process.

Later, we make the short journey back to Stornoway, our home, for the next two nights.

Overnight: Stornoway (2 nights)

Day 3 - Exploring Lewis and Harris

We start the day by driving to Dun Carloway Broch , which sits overlooking Loch an Duin. This impressive ruin is thought to have been an ancient stronghold dating from around 200 BC.

Continue time-travelling with a stop to admire the ancient Callanish Standing Stones . This remarkable arrangement of standing stones dates back over 5,000 years. The exact purpose of the stones is a mystery, but experts think the site was probably an astronomical observatory.

After lunch, we will concentrate on the neighbouring island of Harris. We'll travel through the imposing hills of North Harris to reach the little village of Tarbert, the island's main port.

The little island of Taransay has found fame as the setting for the popular TV programme Castaway and the movie " The Rocket Post ". We'll stop so you can admire the views and take a stroll along the never-ending sands of Luskentyre Beach . This is a great place to enjoy some beach combing. Look out for the machairs that sit behind the beach - these green grassy plains are covered in a mass of wildflowers in the summer.

St Clement's church in the little village of Rodel was built around 1520 by Alexander MacLeod of Dunvegan and Harris. It's widely regarded as the most magnificent medieval structure in the Western Isles. After exploring this impressive building, we return to Stornoway along the scenic "Golden Road".

* Due to planned facility closures, tours departing in September 2024 will be unable to visit Callanish Standing Stones.

Day 4 - Stornoway - Butt of Lewis - Inverness

After breakfast, we travel westwards to see the Butt of Lewis lighthouse and to experience fantastic clifftop views over the Atlantic Ocean. This remote location has the record for the windiest place in Britain, and due west from here, there is nothing but wild sea until the next landfall in North America!

We return to Stornoway for some free time to explore this bustling port before our island interlude comes to an end, and we catch the ferry back to the mainland.

After sailing past the Summer Isles, the ferry cruises up Loch Broom to berth back in Ullapool.

The road south takes past Loch Droma and its picturesque countryside. Crossing the northern Highlands, we head across the Black Isle again to reach Inverness, our home for tonight.

Day 5 - Inverness - Cairngorms National Park - Edinburgh

There’s time to explore Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, before travelling the short distance to visit tragic Culloden Moor . Here, Government troops routed the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie in a bloody battle in 1746.

We’ll stop at Dalwhinnie Malt Whisky Distillery so that you can discover how our National drink is lovingly produced. After our tour, you can sample a "wee nip” and shop for souvenirs. The Cairngorms National Park is Britain’s largest and contains five of Scotland’s six highest peaks. The park provides a stunning backdrop to our travels through the Spey Valley. Then, we descend through the Drumochter Pass to reach the pleasant Victorian tourist town of Pitlochry, where we will stop for refreshments.

The dramatic scenery of Highland Perthshire gives way to rolling farmland as we reach the "Fair City” of Perth, and then we join the motorway for our journey through the ancient Kingdom of Fife. The final part of our drive offers wonderful views of the Forth Bridge as we make our way into Edinburgh.

Customer Reviews Overall Rating:

Visiting the Hebrides is a ‘must do’. Butt of Lewis was breathtaking. Harris Tweed experience amazing. Historical narrative throughout was illuminating.

The five day tour of the highlands and Harris and Lewis was great, everything I would have hoped for. I learnt a lot about the history of Scotland as well as seeing spectacular scenery.

We completed this tour in the middle of a 7-week world trip and it was definitely a highlight. David, our driver, was a delight, and my husband is now a dedicated Scotophile (I already was). The Outer Hebrides is one of my favourite places, so finding this tour online was truly a gift.

"An absolutely amazing tour, perfectly timed for all the things you get to see on the itinerary. Shona was the perfect guide and host. Her story telling comes with such authenticity and emotion, you’ll feel like you were there when it all happened. Even for the fairy tales. :)

"Not knowing that there were 2 choices, I found myself alone with a group of nine young people in a youth hostel. The older ones were in a hotel with breakfast. I wasn't offered tickets for the Harry Potter train, so I didn't have access to it. The last youth hostel was horrible. The interest of the tour and the performance of the driver who acted as guide were very good. All entrance fees are extra. No professional guide. Expensive tour for the money!
