Though you won't find Eeylops Owl Emporium, Flourish and Blotts, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes or Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions in London 's streets, that doesn't mean you can't indulge in the world of "Harry Potter." Knowledgeable witches and wizards lead themed tours that discuss not only filming locations for the beloved Potter films, but also the wizarding world's most famous individuals like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

Consulting Muggle traveler opinion as well as expert input from the top witches and wizards, U.S. News & World Report found the best Harry Potter London tours on offer.

Note: These tours take place on foot, by bus or on trains, so it's best to leave your brooms and Floo powder at home.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter

Price: From 53.50 pounds (around $67) per person Duration: 3.5 hours

For Potterheads, no trip to London is complete without a stop to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter , which explores how the "Harry Potter" films were made. During the self-guided visit, travelers will wander the Diagon Alley set, board the Hogwarts Express, view props and costumes and much, much more. "As both a filmmaker and 'Harry Potter' fan, I was absolutely blown away by this tour," says Leilani Osmundson , senior digital producer at U.S. News Travel. "The sets, props and costumes were incredible and very well-maintained, and there were written explanations for almost everything." Osmundson suggests staying at the back of the group when entering the Great Hall for a chance to snag photos with fewer people in the shot when the group moves on. Keep in mind, this great experience comes with equivalent fees: Travelers warn of high ticket prices and expensive souvenirs. To avoid crowds, get to the studio early.

The tour is self-paced and you can explore as long as you wish. The tour is located in Leavesden, Watford, which is about 20 miles northwest of central London. Take the train to Watford Junction then board the complimentary shuttle to the studio.

SELF-GUIDED TOUR

If you can't make our tour, don't worry! You can use this guide below to Potter locations in London.

Or you can try our  GPS-led audio tour , which you can take any time you wish. Here's a sample.

So whether you’ve memorized the books, seen the films, or proudly own every bit of Potter paraphernalia around – join us as we dive into the magical world of Harry Potter!

This particular route will focus on film sites to the north part of London, so grab your travelcard, lace up your trainers (or grab your broom!) and follow us!

We also have a guide to Harry Potter locations  across London, which includes many more places for you to visit.

Click here for our full interactive tour map .

The tour starts at Liverpool Street Station

Take the Exit for Bishopsgate and when you step out of the station, turn RIGHT onto Bishopsgate.

Continue walking in this direction until you reach Leadenhall Street and turn LEFT.

Take the first RIGHT into Leadenhall Market. For directions from each stop, use the map or audio tour.

1. Leadenhall Market -  Diagon Alley/Leaky Cauldron 1

Harry Potter London Leadenhall

Leadenhall Market has sat in this location since the 14th century ( map )!

However, most of what you can see today dates from the late 1800s and served as another filming location for Diagon Alley and the Leaky Cauldron.

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, this is the location that was used for the filming of Diagon Alley. In fact, at 42 Bull’s Head Passage you will spot a storefront for an optician.

However, this shop front – painted blue – was used to serve as the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron in the first Harry Potter film.

Read our full post on finding the real Diagon Alley in London .

2. Borough Market, 7A Stoney Street Diagon Alley/Leady Cauldron 2

London borough market Harry Potter Tour

In the muggle world, this shop is a charming florist with a prime location in the historic and popular Borough Market ( map ).

But in the world of Harry Potter, this is actually the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron, as seen in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

It is just outside of this shop that the Knight Bus slams to a halt and drops Harry off (via Palmers Green and Lambeth) just outside the pub on Diagon Alley, setting off a car alarm in the process!

The interior shots of the Leaky Cauldron were filmed on a soundstage, however, so it’s just the facade that was used during filming.  See our full post on Harry Potter in Borough Market  as well as finding the real Diagon Alleys .

While you are here, take our self-guided food tour to fill up your belly.

3. Millennium Bridge - Site of Death Eater Attack

Watch out for Death Eaters as you make your way from the north to the south bank of the River Thames over the Millennium Bridge ( map ).

Originally intended to be opened in the year 2000, the bridge was not structurally sound and it had to be closed for a further 2 more years.

From 2002 it remained in place, spanning the river until a gang of Death Eaters battled on top of it and completely destroyed the entire structure!

Well…in the Harry Potter universe that is.

This bridge served as one of the scenes of the dramatic air-borne broomstick battle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince .

Learn more with our full post on the Millennium Bridge .

4.  Australia House Gringotts Bank

The longest continuously occupied diplomatic mission in the U.K., (built entirely with marble shipped all the way from Australia), Australia House served as the setting for Gringotts Wizarding Bank ( map ).

Unlike other sites on this tour, it is the interior of this building that was where scenes were filmed for  Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone .

It's here that Hagrid takes Harry to the wizarding bank for the first time.

The scene was filmed in Australia House's Exhibition Room which is, unfortunately, not open to the public.

A polite word with the security officers at the door may reward you with a peek through the windows, but this is not always guaranteed.

5. Lincoln’s Inn Fields - Number 12 Grimmauld Place 1

A charming square with buildings now occupied by lawyers and surgeons, many believe that Lincoln’s Inn Fields holds the inspiration for the outside of Number 12 Grimmauld Place ( map ).

Muggles may have trouble viewing the house, of course, since there are a number of charms placed on it to protect its’ exact location.

However, if you take a look near number 13 you may just see a glimmer out of the corner of your eye that will clue you into the houses’ precise location.

6. Piccadilly Circus - Where the Trio Go On the Run

On the run from Death Eaters at Bill and Fleur’s wedding in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , Harry, Ron, and Hermione apparate straight to central London.

In the books, they arrive on Tottenham Court Road and go into a nearby restaurant.

For the Deathly Hallows Part, I film, however, the trio turns up right in front of a passing No. 19 bus in the middle of Piccadilly Circus ( map ).

Hermione tells us “I used to come here with Mum and Dad".

They arrive at night with Piccadilly’s world-famous electric lights on display which lend a little magic of their own to this popular London destination!

Just off Piccadilly Circus up Shaftesbury Avenue, you can spot a row of stone pillars that the trio walks past as Hermione explains to the boys where they are.

Somewhere along this road is the cafe where the trio stops to have a rest and ends up in a violent duel with Death Eaters…so mind your step!

7. Cecil Court and Goodwin’s Court - The inspiration for Diagon Alley? Or…the REAL Diagon Alley?

Harry Potter London Cecil Court

A small alleyway just off the bustling Charing Cross Road, Cecil Court is believed by many to have been the inspiration for Diagon Alley ( map ).

The Court here is lined with original Victorian shop fronts and sells a wide variety of antique books, with a few shops fittingly providing a supply of books on the subject of magic!

In fact, the first shop on the right is actually called The Witch Ball !

On Cecil Court, you will also find Watkins Books which claims to be the oldest occultist and mystical bookshop in the entire world!

Harry Potter fans with an eagle eye may also spot a large display of Gringotts banknotes located in one of the shop windows here.

It is safe to say that Cecil Court has a touch of magic to it, easily believable as the entrance into Harry’s world on Diagon Alley.

Goodwin’s Court is much smaller and the buildings are kind of wonky – giving it a surreal feeling.

It’s easy to imagine that this little courtyard path could be an entrance into Harry’s magical world.

Because of this, many people believe that this is the exact place Rowling was trying to recreate in the Potter books.

Harry and Hagrid walk down Charing Cross Road itself in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone .

Whilst Harry is on the Knight Bus in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban he travels down Charing Cross, and Ministry cars drive down the road in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

TIP: Read our full post on finding the real Diagon Alleys

8. Trafalgar Square - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II Film Premiere

Admiral Nelson trafalgar square

It was here in Trafalgar Square ( map)  on the 7 th of July 2011 that the final Harry Potter film began its premiere celebrations.

On a huge stage erected near Nelson’s Column stood Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, J. K. Rowling, and dozens of others who spoke to the crowd of thousands.

From the Square, the cast and Rowling herself then walked the world’s longest red carpet to Leicester Square where the film debuted simultaneously at three different cinemas!

Trafalgar Square is also glimpsed during the opening flight battle of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince as the Death Eaters fly over central London.

9. Old Scotland Yard - The Ministry of Magic

Scotland Yard

Home to muggle politicians, both Whitehall and Great Scotland Yard (map) was used to represent the magical counterpart of our muggle organizations.

Here you will find the exteriors used for the Ministry of Magic during filming for the Polyjuice potion scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Shots taken here are also used for the trip that Mr. Weasley and Harry Take in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

In the books and the films, there is a red telephone box outside the Ministry of Magic that wizards use to access the Ministry.

From the phone box, one must dial ‘62442’ and the phone booth acts as a lift, taking visitors down underneath the ground to the Ministry.

The red phone box used in the film was actually a prop brought in specifically for shooting so sadly, no journeys to the Ministry can be made any longer!

10. Number 10 Downing Street - Direct link to the Minister for Magic

It is inside the Prime Minister’s office at Number 10 Downing Street ( map ) that the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince takes place.

It is revealed that there is a portal from the wizarding world to that of the muggle world so that the Prime Minister of the U.K. and the Minister for Magic can occasionally speak.

It is also here that Kingsley Shacklebolt works during his time as bodyguard to the Muggle Prime Minister.

11. Westminster Underground Station - Tube Station for Ministry of Magic

It's the Westminster Underground Station that Mr. Weasley and Harry go to when visiting the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix .

At the station, ( map ) Mr. Weasley struggles at the barriers, not sure how to work the exits properly – much like many of us during our first visit to London!

For the filming of this scene, Westminster Underground Station was closed for an entire day (a very rare occurrence)!

12. No. 23–29 Claremont Square (No. 12 Grimmauld Place 2)

Tucked away on an unassuming street in Islington lies Claremont Square ( map ), the location of Sirius Black’s familial residence, Number 12 Grimmauld Place.

The house eventually is inherited by Harry and used as the headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix.

This square was used for filming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows .

The muggles that live in the square have long come to accept the mistake in numbering the buildings here, with 11 and 13 being right next to each other.

Don’t feel bad if you can’t spot Number 12, it’s kept under wraps by the Fidelius Charm, meaning only Secret-Keepers can access the building.

13. Kings Cross (Platform 9 ¾)

Every Potterhead knows that Platform 9 ¾ is the location of Kings Cross Station ( map ) that the Hogwarts Express departs from (on the 1st of September every year).

In fact, the very final scene in the last book/film is set right here on the most famous train platform in the world.

For Harry Potter fans, a visit to London wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Kings Cross – and the station does not disappoint.

Now, owing to the layout of the station, it’s not actually possible to pass through a barrier between platforms 9 and 10.

First, for the muggles among us, we would never be able to see it. The second, and the more likely reason, is that there is no actual barrier between the two platforms.

Fret not, however, as the designers of the new Kings Cross Station have got us covered, having installed an entrance to Platform 9 ¾ around the corner from the platforms being used for other railway traffic.

Luckily for us, the Ministry of Magic has come up with a clever way to allow visitors to experience the magic of Platform 9 ¾.

It is here that they have frozen a luggage trolley partially the way through the magical barrier.

Those of us who have sought out the platform will be rewarded with an opportunity to get our photographs taken right outside the barrier.

Find out even more by reading our detailed blog post .

TIP:  Next to the photo opportunity is the fabulous Platform 9 ¾ Shop , filled with sweets and scarves, wands and wizards, books, and bludgers!

THE TOUR ENDS HERE AT KINGS CROSS STATION

Optional stop – london zoo ( m ap ).

In the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , it is a local zoo that Harry is taken to for his cousin Dudley’s 11 th birthday.

At the zoo, Harry comes face-to-face (literally!) when the glass separating him from a boa constrictor disappears and the snake spills out onto the floor.

Harry accidentally causes the removal of the glass as well as speaking to the snake in the rare language known as parseltongue (although Harry has no idea about this until much later on in the series).

It is the reptile house at the London Zoo that was used during the filming of this scene. This has led many people to – incorrectly – assume the Dudley family had taken Harry to London Zoo.

However, when Harry travels to Diagon Alley with Hagrid for the first time, Harry tells him that he has never been to London before, which means the zoo must’ve been somewhere else.

The actual tank used for filming currently holds a black mamba, although in the film the snake is said to be a Burmese python, with a strange departure from the original text.

For those who have made the effort to both get to the zoo and pay for entry, you will be rewarded with a small plaque placed inside the Reptile enclosure that commemorates the spot where the actual filming took place.

Be sure to read our detailed post on  Harry Potter locations throughout London .

Posted on Last updated: November 13, 2021

Every Harry Potter fan knows that a trip to England’s capital means visiting some of the most famous Harry Potter movie locations.

After all, the iconic movie saga was shot all over England, with some of the most famous scenes taking place in London.

Living in London I don’t often head out to do touristy things, but occasionally when friends from Italy are visiting or the sun is out, I love to head out and explore London!

In preparation for visiting the Warner Bros Studio in London (where they have some of the sets and behind the scenes of the Harry Potter movies) me and my flatmate did a Harry Potter movie marathon (it only took us three days after all) and decided to venture around London to see some of the movie locations in person.

In this guide I’ve listed some of the must visit Harry Potter filming locations in London, that you can easily see by yourself. These Harry Potter London sites will make you feel like you’re in the movies!

Harry Potter Tours London

If you follow the locations I’ve listed in this article you’ll be able to see all the main Harry Potter highlights in London.

However if you prefer to have someone take you around and tell you more about the movies and locations you can do a tour.

There are a variety of great tours to choose from depending on your preference. If you’d like to stay active and see many other sites along the way, then a Harry Potter walking tour is right up your alley.

If you want to do something a little different, seeing a little bit extra and while taking in some stunning sites from the canal, then a Harry Potter boat tour is a great idea!

Whether you take a tour or venture to all the best Harry Potter places in London on your own, you’re sure to have a great time.

However, once you see all the locations dotted around London, one tour you simply must take is the Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio tour .

In the studio tour, you’ll see all the sets, props and costumes used in the Harry Potter movies. You’ll also get the chance to step into the Gryffindor common room and walk in the footsteps of Harry Potter himself.

You’ll walk part of the famed Diagon alley location and see the storefronts so prevalent in the movies. Ollivander’s Wand Shop, Flourish and Blotts, and Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes are all still standing for you to investigate.

You’re guaranteed no less than 4-hours in the studio, which makes for plenty of time to explore and take photos. This is one of the must-visit Harry Potter sites in London!

Harry Potter film locations in London

Visiting recognisable locations from the Harry Potter films is a must-do for any Harry Potter fan! Here are a few of the locations you simply can’t miss in London!

The London Zoo

Featured in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , the London Zoo is located just north of central London, and is the oldest scientific zoo in the world.

In 1831, the animals from the Tower of London Menagerie were transferred to the zoo’s collection, and from there the zoo grew immensely.

In 1847, it was opened to the public so that Londoners and tourists alike could appreciate the magnificence of the lovely creatures.

The Reptile House located in the zoo is where Harry set the Burmese python free. The enclosure used in the film is now home to a black mamba.

You can expect to pay a small entry fee for access to the London Zoo, but I recommend you purchase London Zoo tickets online , as you’ll get a discounted rate.

Click here for the exact location.

Leadenhall Market (Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley Scene, London)

Many of the Diagon Alley scenes were shot in the Warner Bros. Studio, however, there are a few that were shot in other filming locations around the city. One of the most easily accessible of these is the Leadenhall Market.

It’s an old covered market in London city that dates back to the 14th century and has an incredible amount of history, as well as being one of the most Instagrammable places in London .

Look for the optician’s shop in Bulls Head passage. This is the location that was used as the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron London in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone .

Lambeth Bridge London

Lambeth Bridge is a road traffic and footbridge that crosses the River Thames.

The bridge was once a suspension bridge, but its safety was fairly questionable and was used mainly as a pedestrian bridge. It was then rebuilt as a road bridge in 1928.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , Harry takes the triple-decker Knight Bus when he runs away from home after making his aunt fly away (remember that scene? That was a good one).

There is a scene where the Knight Bus squeezes in between two double-decker buses, which was filmed on Lambeth Bridge.

It’s one of the less popular Harry Potter sights in London but is still well worth the visit! You’ll find it just upstream from Westminster Bridge in London.

Borough Market Harry Potter

Borough Market has a buzzing atmosphere that gives you a sense of the British culture so deeply embedded in the lives of Londoners. Walking through the many passageways and in between the stalls is a real adventure!

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Diagon Alley’s entrance to the Leaky Cauldron moved from Leadenhall Market to Borough Market.

Find what is now the Chez Michele flower shop to see where Harry enters the Leaky Cauldron pub in the movie. While walking through the Borough Market, be sure to take your time and browse the stalls.

There’s a wonderful selection of delicious food and interesting trinkets for sale that would be a shame to miss, it’s one of my favourite street food markets in London .

Kings Cross Station (Harry Potter’s road to Hogwarts)

Kings Cross Station is one of the main train stations in London. The station opened in 1852 and had to expand a few times in the 19th century to accommodate all the unexpected traffic.

Visit the famous platform 9 and ¾ location to discover exactly how Harry got to Hogwarts.

The scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone , as well as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , were both filmed at Kings Cross Station between platform 4 and 5 (not 9 and 10)!

You can’t visit the exact platform without a valid train ticket, but there is a spot further inside the train station where they set up a luggage trolley disappearing into the wall, where you can take photos.

Be sure to snap a few pictures of the location to keep them safe in your memory bank. This is one of the Harry Potter London locations that you simply must see while you’re in town.

You can’t afford to miss one of the most iconic scene locations in film history!

Westminster Tube

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , Harry and Mr Weasley take a train to Westminster. All the scenes from the movie that appear to be Westminster Station, are indeed Westminster Station.

This is one of the most recognisable Harry Potter film locations in London and definitely deserves a visit.

During the filming of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , Westminster Station had to be shut down for an entire day while filming took place, which caused a lot of disruption.

Luckily, the incredible movie made it all worthwhile!

Scotland Place (Harry Potter’s entrance to the Ministry of Magic)

In the movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince , Harry and Mr Weasly enter the Ministry of Magic through a telephone booth in the real-life area of Scotland Place.

The building that was used in the film is squashed between two government buildings.

You’ll find the building between Scotland Place and New Scotland Yard, but unfortunately, the telephone booth was a prop, so don’t expect to find it here.

You’ll more than likely run into one of the many Harry Potter tour groups here, as they make their way around London.

St Pancras (Harry Potter’s Kings Cross Station Scene)

St Pancras is a high-speed railway terminus and provides transport to other countries including Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

St Pancras is right next door to Kings Cross Station and together they form the main transport hub in the UK.

St Pancras was actually used in the exterior shots as if it were Kings Cross Station. We can only assume this is because the building is far more beautiful and makes the scene look a little more magical.

You’ll also notice that in the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , St Pancras acts as a backdrop to the scene when the Ford Anglia starts to fly.

If you’re a fan of wonderfully intricate architecture, this should be on your must-visit list of Harry Potter spots in London.

Claremont Square (Harry Potter’s Order of the Phoenix headquarters)

Any Harry Potter fan will immediately recognise the home of Sirius Black, and the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.

This can be found in the now-famed Claremont Square. The area was featured in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , as well as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 .

The setting was known as 12 Grimmauld Place in the movies. Of course, that’s not its real name but we can only imagine.

Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus is an intersection, in the West End of London, that connects the main roads. It’s located close to many of the biggest shopping and entertainment centres in London.

Piccadilly Circus is as famous in real-life as it is in the movie. It‘s featured in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 , when Hermione, Harry and Ron are nearly run over by a bus.

The fact that they managed to film in such a busy location is mind-blowing! It’s just as busy in real life as it appears in the Harry Potter movies, and crossing the street can prove to be a challenge.

This is one of the most famous Harry Potter locations in London!

Australia House: Gringotts Bank London

The set of Gringotts Wizarding Bank was filmed at Australia House, the Australian Embassy in London. Although you’re not allowed inside without a truly valid reason, the building is just as grand from the outside as it is from the inside.

Statues line the roof and the visit can be appreciated by anyone who has the faintest interest in architecture. I highly recommend you visit as it’s only a 6-minute walk from Covent Garden and very easy to find!

Charing Cross Road

Charing Cross Road is famous all across London for its wide selection of bookshops at the edge of the theatre district.

There are a number of great theatres in Charing Cross Road, but its main attraction is the many second-hand bookstores that call this area their home.

In the movies, the Inn for Wizards is located on this street and serves as a gateway between the non-wizarding world and Diagon Alley. This area is located in Muggle Street of Charing Cross Road.

This is well worth a visit, even if you don’t recognise it from the movies. Cute stores and cafes are scattered around the neighbourhood and can be great fun to explore!

St Paul’s Cathedral

St Paul’s Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral that acts as the seat of the Bishop of London and the mother church of the diocese of London. The church marks the highest point in the city and is dedicated to the Apostle Paul.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince , the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral was used as a backdrop in the scene when the Death Eaters attack Millenium Bridge.

Taking a photo with the dome in the background is a must-do activity for any true Harry Potter fan!

While you’re there, take a tour of St Paul’s Cathedral to learn about the history of London, and view the 3 separate galleries within the cathedral. You’ll also get to head to the roof to get a panoramic view of London!

Millenium Bridge

Which leads on to our next famous Harry Potter movie location; Millenium Bridge!

At the start of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the Death Eaters attack Millenium Bridge in London, to show the return of Voldemort and the incoming evile of the movies.

It’s a steel suspension bridge that lends itself very well to collapsing during the attack. In my opinion it’s also one of the most photogenic places in London.

Other Must-Visit Harry Potter Things in London

While the filming locations are recognisable, they’re not the only Harry Potter locations. There are plenty of other epic things to do in London !

Cecil Court

While Cecil Court isn’t actually a Harry Potter film location, it’s definitely a must-visit for any true Harry Potter fan!

It’s a road that leads off from Charing Cross Road and is said to be J.K Rowling’s favourite street in London. It’s also thought to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley!

Cecil Court is home to many obscure book shops including stores selling books exclusively about witchcraft and magic! You’ll also get the chance to visit the bookstore where the very first Harry Potter book was sold.

Goodwin’s Court

Goodwins Court is a small alleyway that dates back to 1627. The alley is lined with small shops and really comes to life at night when the original gaslamp street lights are lit.

The small alley was J.K Rowling’s inspiration for Knockturn Alley in her books. As soon as you see it, you’ll realise exactly how this small street could inspire an imagination.

Be sure to take your camera along to this Harry Potter destination as you’ll want to keep it locked in your memory bank.

Harry Potter Locations in Oxford

Oxford is home to a few more Harry Potter locations worth visiting. It’s less than an hour’s drive from London and you can easily visit Oxford on a day trip from London.

Christ Church

Christ Church is one of the most popular and most frequently visited colleges in Oxford . The college is home to the Tudor Great Hall, which was used as inspiration for the Hogwarts Great Hall set.

There are other parts of the college that were actually in the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone . Visit the Grand Stairway to see where Mr McGonagall meets Ron, Hermione and Harry for the very first time.

The hallways were also used for the scene where Hermione shows Harry the Quidditch trophy that his father won back in the day.

The architecture of the college itself is absolutely stunning and is well worth exploring while you’re in the Oxford area. Although the college is often left out from Harry Potter tours, it’s a must-visit for any true Harry Potter fan.

Bodleian Library

The Bodleian Library was used extensively in many of the Harry Potter movies, making it a visit you won’t want to miss!

The gothic vaulted ceilings were a great fit and worked well in the Hogwarts infirmary throughout the filming of four of the movies.

It was also used in Harry Potter and the Goblets of Fire in the scenes where McGonagall teaches the children to dance.

The Duke Humphrey’s Library, which is a part of the Bodleian Library was used as the Hogwarts Library throughout the films.

With so much of the movies being filmed in this location, it’s definitely worth the visit. The architecture and gothic style of the building makes it all the more interesting to explore!

New College

New College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. The college was founded in 1379, leaving you wondering “what could be so new about it?” Well, nothing really, except for the students that pass through it.

Its full name is St Mary’s College of Winchester, but that’s quite a mouthful, so the locals call it New College.

New College was used as a filming location in Harry Potter and the Goblets of Fire . You can visit the South Cloisters Walk where young wizards wore “Potter Stinks” badges in the movie.

The Most Magical Harry Potter Filming Locations in London

Put on your most comfortable shoes and get ready to discover the best of Harry Potter in London. These are the 18 must-visit spots that every Harry Potter fan should visit on a trip to London:

Platform 9 ¾ in King’s Cross Station

Gleis ¾

London boasts the most renowned setting in the history of Harry Potter: King’s Cross Station. It stands as the ultimate destination for Harry Potter fans visiting the city. Here, you’ll find the one-of-a-kind, enchanting Platform 9 3/4.

Some time ago, this magical trolley was halfway between the Hogwarts Express and the Muggle world. Best of all, it was located on Platform 9 of King’s Cross Station.

However, after the station’s renovation, in part due to the large number of tourists visiting the site, this area is now unfortunately only accessible to people with a valid train ticket. But there’s a solution! The iconic Harry Potter scene has been relocated a few meters away to a more accessible location in the station’s main hall. If you’re planning to visit this spot, be prepared for the crowds. But with a little patience, everyone manages to capture their coveted photograph.

Note: You will find the trolley next to the official Harry Potter store. There, a member of the store’s staff will provide you with a scarf and toss it in the air to create the illusion of you running through the wall while another staff member takes a photograph. You can purchase a professional photo at the store if desired, but it’s entirely optional. Otherwise, you are more than welcome to take your own photo for free.

The Reptile House at London Zoo

Harry Potter Locations London

In the first Harry Potter movie, the young wizard talks to a snake for the first time and discovers his magical abilities. If you want to visit this filming location from the Harry Potter movie, you’ll have to take a trip to the London Zoo’s Reptile House. Finding the enclosure that Dudley fell into in the movie scene after an altercation with Harry will be easy, thanks to a sign. A visit to the London Zoo is highly recommended, especially if you’re in London with children.

St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel at the Entrance to King's Cross Station

Hotel St Pancras Renaissance, Harry Potter Locations in London

You can see the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which served as the King’s Cross Station entrance. In the real world, the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel is and remains a hotel. That means you can spend the night there, dear Harry Potter fans! However, the location overnight adventure comes with a steep price. The St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel is awarded five stars and is correspondingly high-priced, so not all Muggles will have the pleasure of bedding down in the precious feathers.

Fun Fact: Not only were scenes for Harry Potter shot at the Hotel St. Pancras Renaissance but also scenes for Batman and 102 Dalmatians films. Even the Spice Girls’ Wannabe music video happened here.

The Leaky Cauldron in Leadenhall Market

Leadenhall Market London

One of the most beautiful places in the city of London is the covered Leadenhall Market. Harry Potter fans will immediately see the resemblance to Diagon Alley. There’s a store in the Bull’s Head Passage, which was the entrance of the pub “Leaky Cauldron” in the first Harry Potter movie. Still, Leadenhall Market served primarily as a model for the film set at Warner Bros Film Studios, not as the actual filming location. Most of the filming occurred at the Warner Bros. studio lot.

The Shops in Cecil Court in Covent Garden

Cecil Court London Harry Potter Locations

Diagon Alley of Harry Potter was inspired by various streets in central London. However, the series took much inspiration from Cecil Court in Covent Garden. If you walk through Cecil Court, you’ll quickly realize why! Colorful shop windows full of books and curious objects immediately make you feel like you’re in the famous shopping street from the magical world of Harry Potter. But that’s not all! In these stores, you will see many extraordinary fan items you would hardly find elsewhere.

Cecil Court is also a great place to look for curious objects and fan items related to other British institutions, such as Sherlock Holmes, Paddington Bear, and Alice in Wonderland.

Goodwin’s Court inspired the Diagon Alley

191030103522005

When I first walked into Goodwin’s Court, I couldn’t help but be amazed by its striking resemblance to Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley! This small narrow alley in central London is a bit difficult to find if you don’t know exactly where to look. But you can reach it from St Martins Lane or Bedfordbury.

If you’ve been to Warner Bros. Studios, where the films were shot, you’ll notice the resemblance especially quickly! There, as you know, you can walk through the actual Diagon Alley used as a backdrop!

Tacos El Pastor - Borough Market

el-pastor-borough-market-191030103522012-1920×960

This is one of my favorite Harry Potter-related places! In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry escapes from his home and boards the Knight Bus, which transports him to a spot in the Borough Market. The destination is The Leaky Cauldron, which serves as a pub and gateway between the wizarding and Muggle worlds. Interestingly, the front door that acts as the entrance to this enchanting place in the film actually leads to a fantastic Mexican taco restaurant known as Tacos El Pastor!

I’m sure that regardless of whether you’re a fan of the movies or not, you’ll love these tacos! Plus, you may need to grab a bite to eat after a day of running around London, looking for film locations.

The South Africa House as Gringotts

Harry Potter Locations in London, Gringotts

The South African Embassy in London is located right on Trafalgar Square and served as a backdrop in the Harry Potter films. The embassy is one of the most eye-catching buildings in this area. Fans of the Harry Potter movies will find the shape of the facade made of columns very familiar: In the movies, it’s the entrance to Gringotts’ magical bank!

The Australian Embassy → Gringotts Interior

Australia House in London

This building, located in Temple, between Covent Garden and the City, was used as the base to bring the famous magical bank Gringotts to life in the Harry Potter movies. The scenes inside the banking institution were mainly filmed here. However, its monumental exterior reminds us of the magical bank and is undoubtedly worth a photo.

Unfortunately, entry to the building is only possible with a visa. If you want to take photos with the real facade and interior of Gringotts, you should visit the Warner Bros. Studios exhibition.

  • Piccadilly Circus

210301133310001 Piccadilly Circus London

Few places in London are as famous as Piccadilly Circus. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, this was the filming location for the outdoor scenes where Harry, Ron, and Hermione escape through London’s West End.

Our Expert Tip: Just a 5- to 10-minute walk from Piccadilly Circus is the House of MinaLima museum in Soho. The small store includes an exhibition of graphic objects and art inspired by the Harry Potter film series. The extensive collection of maps, newspapers, and movie props is unique and appreciated by die-hard fans. Many parts are faithfully reproduced and offered for sale in limited editions. Whether you want to buy a souvenir or just browse the design pieces, this spot is a must for Harry Potter fans!

Claremont Square

Claremont Square’s Houses was a filming location for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It served as an exterior view of Grimmauld Square. In the movie, the house at number 12 Grimmauld Place belongs to Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black. It is also the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. After you’ve been to Platform 9 ¾ in King’s Cross, it’s not far to get here.

Claremont Square is located not far from the famous King’s Cross Station. You only need a few minutes‘ walk from the Tube Station Angel.

  • Millennium Bridge

Millennium Bridge, London

The Millennium Bridge connects London with the district of Southwark and ensures that pedestrians can cross the Thames dry-footed. It also offers fabulous views of the Tate Modern and St. Paul’s Cathedral. In the sixth part of the film series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the Millennium Bridge is one of the most important filming locations and can be seen in some significant scenes.

London City Hall

London City Hall

London’s City Hall is the seat of the central county council and is featured in one of the first scenes of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, even though the modern and beautiful landmark is not even mentioned in the books. In the film, City Hall employees witness the Dementor attack on the Millennium Bridge.

Westminster Station

Westminster London

All London visitors will sooner or later pass Westminster Station. After all, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey are also located in the immediate vicinity. But that’s not the only reason a stop at Westminster Station is worthwhile. Perhaps you remember the scene in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince where Harry and Mr. Weasley pass through a train station on their way to the Ministry of Magic? Right. This is Westminster Station.

The Ministry of Magic at Great Scotland Yard

Great Scotland Yard

The Ministry of Magic could not have been better housed than on this street. As you head toward Scotland Place, you can already see the visitors’ entrance that Harry and Mr. Weasley took in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to get into the Ministry of Magic.

While it’s a shame, what you can’t see is the phone booth from the movie. Oh, how nice it would be if the whole Harry Potter world would coincide with reality!

Lambeth Bridge

Lambeth Bridge London

You know the scene from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when the Noctambul bus is stuck on Lambeth Bridge between two other buses? Here’s your spot! Whether to your disappointment or relief, there are no mythical buses here. If you want to see those, then head to the Warner Bros Studios in London, where it is on display.

Charms at the Harrow School

Harrod School, London & Harry Potter

In the real world, the magic classroom where the diminutive Professor Flitwick teaches is the Fourth Form Room at Harrow Boarding School. This stunning facility is a historic boys’ school dating back to the 16th century. Not only can you see the classroom you know from the movies on a guided tour, but you can also experience the atmosphere of a first-class boarding school in the UK. Just be sure to not get in the way of any magic happening—even if it’s just kids learning.

Surbiton Railway Station

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry sits in the station café at Surbiton Railway Station and reads about the attacks on the Millennium Bridge. This is exactly the place where Harry was once picked up by Dumbledore. Lucky for you, muggle: The station is located just a little farther from the city center, southwest of London.

Guided Harry Potter Tours in London

Want to see as many locations of Harry Potter movies as possible in one day and as stress-free as possible? Take a walking tour of the filming locations! There are many options, whether on foot, in small groups, or in private tours. Here is a small overview of the different tickets for Harry Potter tours in London:

Warner Bros. Studios: Original Sets from the Harry Potter Saga

Another way to see Harry Potter filming locations is to visit the Harry Potter Studios. The lots are like the hallowed halls for Harry Potter fans. Whether it’s the original sets, costumes, props, or a glimpse of the special effects, in the studios, die-hard fans’ hearts swell at the sight of the many gems from the film. You’ll also have the chance to learn how the most magical special effects in the film series were created.

Harry Potter Studio Tour in London

The pleasure is bittersweet, though, because the price of admission is steep. In this case, however, the bite into the sour apple is still worth it for every Potter fan, especially those traveling from outside the country. Frankly, you may never know when you can get the chance to visit again!

Of course, you’ll also find the Hogwarts location here. The scenes from inside the magic school were also shot in this studio. You can see the original backdrops on the tour, walk around, and take photos!

The studios are located outside London, so it’s best to plan a whole day for the visit. Both admission and transfer to the studios are convenient and can be managed through their website.

The Cauldron: the Harry Potter Bar in London

Okay, the Cauldron Pub is not a Harry Potter filming location, strictly speaking. Still, I don’t take that too seriously because it definitely could be! If you want an atmosphere in London like in the Harry Potter movies, this is the place to be. It feels so authentic that I think it must be on this list.

This Harry Potter-esque bar in London combines magic with technology to give visitors a wizardly experience. Enter this mysterious place that’s a cool mix of the Leaky Cauldron, the Forbidden Forest, and a Three Wizards Tournament Tent. Here, you can make your own potion with the help of a cauldron and a wand!

More Harry Potter filming locations in England

Are you in London and dying to see where the exterior shots of Hogwarts were filmed? As you probably know, Hogwarts Castle doesn’t exist in reality—only in the Harry Potter world. But the Alnwick Castle was used for many shots . Unfortunately, this beautiful castle is not near London. Instead, it’s north of Newcastle on the Scottish border . Still, if you have the time for a trip to the area, you really won’t want to miss out.

What you see in the movies is a mix of special effects and a miniature version of Hogwarts, which you can check out at Warner Bros. Studios in London ! Otherwise, many schools in Edinburgh are said to have inspired Hogwarts, including George Heriot’s School and Fettes College . Why Edinburgh? Well, that’s the hometown of the Harry Potter series author, J.K. Rowling.

What you can visit, however, is the Hogwarts library . This is the oldest reading room in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University . Next door is Divinity School , whose building was used as the wizard school’s hospital wing , where curses and Quidditch injuries were cured.

At Durham Cathedral in Durham, the young wizards learned how to turn animals into water goblets .

Other filming locations are also in Scotland (Glenfinnan Viaduct and Lochaber) and Wales (Freshwater West and Pembrokeshire) . So, it’s actually already decided where your next trip should be!

In this guide we’re going to go through everything you need to know to visit the Harry Potter Studios, including how to get there, how to get tickets, information for making the most of your day, and lots more! Let’s get started by answering some questions you may have.

Harry Potter Studio Opening Times

You will definitely want to check the website for up-to-date opening times, but generally throughout the year the studio is open from 8.30am through to 10pm. More specifically:

  • Doors open at 8.30am
  • First tour starts at 9am
  • Final tour starts at 6.30pm
  • Studio closes at 10pm

These times do vary by day. In terms of dates, the Studio is open every day of the week. There are some exceptions, it is closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day (25th and 26th of December).

How Much Does the Harry Potter Studio Tour Cost?

Prices for the standard tour are as follows (correct as of April 2024).

  • Adult: £53.50
  • Child aged 5-15: £43
  • Childer Under 4: Free
  • Family: £172
  • Carer: Free

For a family, this can be either 2 adults and 2 children, or 1 adult and 3 children.

You can also purchase more expensive tour packages, but these are the basic prices. Note that these are just entry prices, and don’t include any transport.

Is the Harry Potter Studio Tour Accessible?

The Harry Potter Studio Tour is accessible, and visitors can bring one carer free of charge with proof of entitlement.

For the studio itself, the majority of it is level and accessible for wheelchair users. There are some exceptions, such as the Hogwarts Bridge and the Knights Bus. Diagon Alley also includes an incline and cobbled streets.

Wheelchairs and mobility scooters are permitted but mobility scooters cannot be wider than 86cm.

Visitors with assistance dogs are welcome and water bowls can be provided. There’s also a dedicated toilet area for assistance dogs.

For visitors with a hearing impairment, induction loops can be provided. A portable iPad is also available (this must be booked in advance), which can provide a subtitled version of some of the films. It’s also possible to book a BSL tour in advance.

For more information on accessibility and any other needs you have, please visit the accessibility section of the official website.

How to Get to the Harry Potter Studio Tour

You have two major options for getting to the Harry Potter Studio Tour – you can take a tour which includes your transport, or you can make your own way there using either public transport or a car.

We’ll go through both of these options so you can make the right decision as to which is going to be best for you.

Certainly, the easiest option for getting to the Harry Potter Studios is to take a tour which includes your return transport.

These tours leave from various locations around London (and other parts of the UK), and included in the price of your tour will be pre-booked timed entry to the Studio Tour and return transport to and from a pick-up point.

Note that most tours do not include a guide inside the experience as it is largely self-guided. However, you can book a tour, such as this one , which does include a guide for the time inside the studio as well. When choosing tours, do check how long they give you at the studio. You will generally want a minimum of three hours, although you might find four hours will be more suitable if you want to experience everything.

Some options include:

  • This tour  which departs from the Victoria Coach Station in London
  • Another tour with departure from Victoria Coach Station in London
  • A slightly longer tour giving you 4 hours at the studio, with departure from Kings Cross Station, London
  • This is a fully guided tour which includes return transport and a guide throughout the experience.
  • This tour of the Harry Potter studios , which includes return transport from central London hotels
  • If you want to do more on your day, this tour includes a tour of Oxford as well as the Studios , with departures from Great Portland Street, London
  • This tour , with one of our favorite walking tour companies Take Walks includes a short walking tour of central London (including some Harry Potter filming locations in London ), followed by round trip transport to the studio and entry to the Studio Tour for four hours. We’ve done this tour and it is a good option although does make for a full day.

As you can see, there are lots of options! We’ve got more on all of these in the section below on how to buy your tickets for the Studio Tour.

Hagrid Hut interior

By Public Transport

From central London, it’s fairly easy to get to the Harry Potter Studios by public transport. You will take the train from Euston Station to Watford Junction.

Then you need to take a dedicated shuttle bus operated by the Studio Tour that runs from just outside Watford Junction Station (it is well sign posted), that takes you directly to the studios.

Bus to Warner Bros Studio Tour

For the train, you can either buy your tickets in advance here , or you can pay on the day using a contactless or Oyster card. This will require you to tap in and tap out using the yellow card readers. Note that Oyster cards and contactless cards do not work beyond Watford Junction, so don’t go any further than this.

See our  guide to buying and using the Oyster card in London , and our  guide to paying for public transport in London  for more information on using these forms of payment for travel in and around London.

For the shuttle bus, this is included in the price of your entry ticket. To board the bus you will need to have a valid pre-purchased ticket to the Harry Potter Studios, or proof of a ticket booking confirmation (printed or on your phone).

Getting to the Harry Potter Studios by car is relatively easy. Depending on the time of day, exact departure location and traffic, the drive from central London takes around an hour to ninety minutes.

From Oxford it’s around an hour, and it’s around two hours from Birmingham. Visitors with valid pre-purchased Studio tickets can take advantage of free parking on site. Note you cannot enter the parking area without a valid ticket or booking confirmation for that day.

Where to Buy Harry Potter Studio Tour Tickets

If you are making your own way to the Harry Potter studios, you have to buy your ticket in advance from the official website . You cannot turn up without a ticket, and tickets are not for sale on site.

Tickets go on sale well in advance, but despite the site having capacity for up to 6,000 people a day, they tend to sell out far in advance, so you will want to plan as far ahead as possible.

The summer months, weekends, and school holidays are the busiest days of the year for the Studio so we recommend that you book as far in advance as you can if you are visiting over those periods.

Weekdays often have better availability, so if you are flexible, look at different days of the week to maximise your chances of getting a ticket.

Buckbeak

Tickets are for timed entry, which helps the studios manage visitor numbers throughout the day. Whilst there is no limit to how long you can stay after you enter, you do need to enter the attraction at the time you book. There is a little bit of flexibility in this, but it’s best not to show up hours later than your time to avoid disappointment.

The WB Studios Tour folks recommend you arrive at the site at least 20 minutes before your ticket time so you can go through the security checks.

If you can’t buy a ticket from the official site, don’t worry, you still have lots of options.

First, you can opt to take a tour with a tour company, as these have a different ticket allocation system. Whilst this will be slightly more expensive, at least you will still be able to go, and it will include transport as well. See here for some of the tour options available, and here for even more !

Another option is to book a Deluxe Tour, which includes a two-hour guided tour of the studios, a photo package, a hot meal, butterbeer, souvenir guidebook and special designated parking. Following the guided tour, you are free to explore yourself. As Deluxe Tours are more expensive, they tend to have better availability.

Broomstick training

Deluxe Tours can be booked directly with the Studios, subject to availability, on the official site here .

How Long Does the Harry Potter Studio Tour take?

The regular tour itself is self-guided, other than an introduction at the beginning, so you can take as long as you like to wander the studios.

The average length of a visit is around three and a half hours, and that is what the studio estimates most people will take and forecast their capacity around.

Dumbledores office

This is also about the amount of time that most tour companies will give you, although some offer a bit more time on site, so if you think you will need more time, be sure to pick a tour company that offers more time.

Where to Stay Near the Harry Potter Studios

The majority of visitors to the Harry Potter Studios visit from London as a day trip, and choose a hotel in London. If you go down this route, you might want to consider a hotel that makes it easier to get to the studios, be that by public transport or on one of the tours.

We’ve suggested some options below, as well as some hotels near the Studios themselves if you want to be really close.

Note that hotels in London are relatively expensive, especially those located near major attractions, and rooms aren’t always huge. However, we’ve picked what we think are a good choice for you.

We also recommend reading our guide to where to stay in London for some suggested options across all budgets.

Hotels near London Victoria train station (where most bus tours depart)

  • Comfort Inn Buckingham Palace Road – great value 3* property just 5 minutes walk from London Victoria train station
  • The Resident Hotel – well reviewed 4* property, five minutes from London Victoria.
  • Lime Tree Hotel – A well reviewed boutique hotel, around nine minutes walk from London Victoria
  • Walrus Bar and Hostel – it’s not too close to London Victoria (15-20 minutes by public transport, or a 35 minute walk), but it’s very central and is a great budget option for London in general

Hotels near Euston train station (for the train)

  • YHA London St. Pancras – a good value budget option a short walk from both Euston and Kings Cross stations. Offers both private and dormitory style rooms
  • Comfort Inn and Suites King Cross – a great mid-range option, with all rooms coming with a kitchenette
  • Point A Hotels – comfortable, cosy rooms, part of the well rated budget-friendly Point A hotel chain
  • Radisson Blu Edwardian – luxury, boutique accommodation, a short walk from Euston station

Hotels near the Harry Potter Studios

  • Mercure London – one of the closest hotels to the actual studios, this would be a good option if you are driving and want to be as close as possible
  • Holiday Inn Express London – right next to Watford Junction, this mid-range and well reviewed property is convenient for both trains to London, and for the studio shuttle
  • Jurys Inn London Watford – another great mid-range option, just a short walk from Watford Junction train station

Our Harry Potter Studio Tour Review and Experience

Now for the fun stuff! Although, if you want your visit to be a surprise, you might want to skip this section, as you now have everything you need to know in order to visit.

Still, if you want an idea of what to expect from your visit, read on, and we’ll share our own experiences of visiting the Harry Potter Studios! We have actually visited a few times over the years, both via a tour and using our own transport, and well talk about that a bit as well.

The first time we visited the studios we came from central London, taking the train to Watford Junction and the Shuttle Bus to the studio. When we visited there was a fee for the shuttle bus, but this is now included in the price of the ticket. The train was easy, and the shuttle bus departure point was well marked just outside the train station.

We pre-booked our tickets on the official website, so with our email booking confirmation we picked up our tickets from the kiosks. They have both staffed ticket windows and automatic kiosks – both work!

Once we had our ticket, which had our entry time on it, we went through security and joined the line for entry.

On another visit we took a tour to central London to compare the experience, specifically this tour . Whilst getting to the studio ourselves was easy enough, obviously having a bus take us directly to and from the studio from central London did make things even easier. However as it wasn’t a guided tour, once we were on site the experience was the same as visiting ourselves.

Warner Bros Studio Tour Entrance

All entries for the Harry Potter Studio Tour are timed, so you have to wait in line, as they let each group in all together. Still, waiting in line is made fun, as the line has the cupboard under the stairs set right next to it, meaning you can start getting excited about your upcoming adventure straight away (and start taking pictures!).

At the time of our entry, we were all ushered into a large waiting room with a series of screens around the walls and given a brief introduction as to what we might expect. We then went into a cinema where some of the key cast members shared their thoughts. Then, the cinema screen rolled away, revealing a giant wooden door before us. Here, a guide welcomed us, and prepared us for our journey.

Cupboard under the stairs

The Great Hall and Beyond

After our introduction, the massive wooden doors we were standing in front of opened, and the Great Hall was revealed. I have to say, this was pretty amazing, to be able to step into the world of Harry Potter. The Great Hall set was used as the Great Hall for six of the films, with many scenes shot here.

Great Hall Hogwarts

It certainly felt like the most complete of the sets we visited, as it was totally immersive and all around us, and was quite an experience.

From the Great Hall we were essentially allowed to continue on our own into the first half of the tour building. This had so much to see that I won’t go into it all here.

To give you an idea though, you can do everything from practice your wand waving through to seeing the Womping Willow in action through to visiting the potions laboratory, meeting Buckbeak, hanging out on Platform 9 3/4, and wandering around the Forbidden Forest!

Platform 9 3/4 Warner Bros Studio Tour

Food and Butterbeer

Around half way through the tour, you come to the Backlot Cafe. This serves hot and cold food, as well as that famous drink – Butterbeer! This is a non-alcoholic beverage that tastes sort of like a mix of marshmallows and popcorn. It is definitely a must-try when visiting! We can also recommend the Butterbeer icecream which is very good.

Butterbeer

You don’t have to eat here, as there are other dining options on site, including the Studio Cafe. However, if you want to try Butterbeer, the Backlot Cafe is the place to do it.

Privet Drive and the Night Bus

Once you’ve finished your butterbeer experience, it’s time to head outside to Privet Drive! Here you can see the house where Harry grew up, as well as a number of other fairly large props and sets, including the Knight Bus and the bridge that led across the ravine outside Hogwarts.

Knight Bus

This is the only outside part of the tour, and it isn’t a huge area, although if the weather isn’t great you might want a waterproof jacket to enjoy this part of the tour.

Gringotts Bank, Diagon Alley and the Last of the Tour

After seeing the exterior part of the tour, you enter the final part of the tour. Don’t worry though, you’re only really half way though – there’s loads to see still! From here you’re going to see a lot of the props and costumes, as well as detailed information on how these were created, and the work that went into them.

Diagon Alley

You’re also going to have the opportunity to walk through Gringotts Bank, meet a dragon, walk right down Diagon Alley, and see such locations as Ollivanders Wand Shop!

Finally, and perhaps most impressively, you come to the 1:24 scale model of Hogwarts itself. This is a massive construction that fills a whole room, and is truly spectacular. You can also watch videos to see how the model was used and digitally merged into the final films, which is very impressive.

Once you’re done with all the above, you pop out into the shop, where you can buy pretty much any Harry Potter merchandise you can imagine!

Tips for Visiting the Harry Potter Studio

Based on our experiences visiting the Harry Potter Studio in London, we’ve put together the following tips to help you plan your visit and maximise your time.

Decide how you want to visit

As described earlier in detail, you have a number of options for visiting the Harry Potter Studios, although depending on ticket availability, you might not always have every option. However, the main options are:

  • Book a standard tour and plan your own transport, either by train/shuttle or car
  • Book a deluxe tour and plan your own transport, either by train/shuttle or car
  • Book a tour that includes transport and entry like this

Whichever you choose to go for, you will definitely have a great time!

Book your tickets in advance

We can’t emphasise this enough – tickets are not available on site – you have to book in advance . If you’re travelling independently, you can do that through the official site .

If tickets are not available through the official site for the time you want to visit, or you’d rather let someone else handle your transport, here is a good selection of tours to choose from , and here are some more options .

Plan your time

The average visit time is three and a half hours, so make sure you give yourself at least this much time on site. Don’t forget there’s food on-site as well as a massive gift shop, so you’ll want to factor time in for these activities too. Some fans can easily spend 4 or 5 hours here.

Whilst the majority of tours that include transport give you at least three hours on site, some allow for longer visits, so make sure to book the right tour for you. There is a lot to do and see on site, so more time can definitely be put to good use and you don’t want to feel rushed!

harry potter london locations tour

One of the best parts of visiting the Harry Potter Studios is just how interactive the experience can be. Whilst it’s certainly not a theme park, there’s a lot to do, from practicing your wand skills through to pushing your own trolley through the wall at platform 9 3/4 through to riding and summoning your own broomstick!

Some of these experiences will have a short queue, but due to the timed system for entry, these will never be too long.

Many visitors also come in full Harry Potter outfits, so don’t be afraid to dress up and get into the swing of things. You won’t be alone, and it adds to the experience for many people!

what an amazing detailed blog. really helped me understand and plan the trip. I am booked for 1st October 5:30 as didn’t get any other day or time slot on the website,, do you think I should look at going through a tour agent to get more time in the day time or evening is fine? hoping there will be no issues in taking public transport while coming back. we will be staying in Westminster.

Thanks very much! So I think you will be fine. On the 1st October it looks like the studio tour doesn’t close until 10pm, and I would say that 4.5 hours should be more than enough. The last bus to the station leaves at 10pm, so just be sure to be on that. In terms of trains, looking at the West Midlands train timetables, the last train on a Sunday back to central London is at quarter to 1 in the morning, so I think you will be fine.

Enjoy your visit!

My family live on the wirral it would take us about 3 1/ 2 hrs to get there with the price of fuel costly then the stay overnight in the hotel with bed and breakfast. Your outstanding entry price for an adult £48 Kids price extortionate my granddaughter is 8yrs old obsessed with Harry Potter reads the books loves the films she is desperate to come on the studio tour but can’t justify you outrageous prices. And then we have to pay for fuel to travel back. I am registered disabled but not in a wheelchair. My husband is my carer we are also pensioners do you honestly expect a disabled person to pay £48 to get in while OK my carer is free surely you should have compensation for the disabled person. As it stands we have to keep letting the 8yr old down as we can’t afford your prices. Then the added extras for the bus etc. I would ask you to see if you could establish a different rate for children under 10 and the disabled pensioner please as we would bring her but out of our pension we cannot afford your cost. Hope you take into account what I have said. Underprivileged children should be catered for I know.you have to make your money but at the cost of a child. Shame on you. My granddaughter may never get to see it now.xc

Can I take photos throughout the tour ?

23rd July 2021 at 7:02 pm

Yep photography is permitted pretty much everywhere in the Harry Potter studio tour. There are a few exceptions – you can’t do photography in the pre-show cinema, or in the green screen areas. You also can’t use a tripod.

Have a great visit, and let me know if you have any more questions!

13th October 2019 at 4:38 am

Hello! I am so excited to have found your blog. I plan to read the entire london portion. I booked tickets to the studio for 1/1. I thought it would be a fun way to start the new year. Now I am wondering if it will be a problem to get to the studio. TfL site states train will be running on a sunday schedule. How much extra travel time should we think about? Our tix are for 1230p. We are staying by the waterloo station. Thank you for your amazing insights!

13th October 2019 at 3:25 pm

Thanks very much, I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time.

For the trains, all you’d have to do is check the timetables for a Sunday and this should give you an idea of how much time you will need 🙂 You shouldn’t have to worry too much I don’t think, 1230 should give you plenty of time to get there! Have a wonderful time!

Hi thank you for this it is so useful especially for first timers like me. My concern is on the age, in the studios website it says below 16 must be accompanied by adults. I am thinking of sending my 15 and 13 yr old kids on their own. Would this be possible if I take a guided tour instead? Many thanks Nurika

27th September 2019 at 7:02 pm

Unfortunately the policy is that all children must be accompanied by an adult, even on the guided tours

26th September 2019 at 7:33 am

Thank you for you site and sharing some great information!! It is just awesome!!

Would you happen to know the difference between the Studio’s VIP tour and the Fully-Guided Making of Harry Potter Tour. Looks like the Fully-Guided might have a couple more stops?

26th September 2019 at 10:49 pm

So the VIP tour (I guess you mean the Deluxe tour?) includes a few extras like butterbeer, souvenir photo, meal and guidebook. So quite a few extras. The fully guided tour includes the tour, but I believe it’s the same actual tour as the Deluxe tour, just without the extras. Of course, it also include round trip transport from London as well.

So it’s more about if you want the extras or not, or if you prefer the transport.

Have an amazing time, whichever you go for!

Wow! What lovely immersive writing, and lots of fine fine details. A pleasure to read. I’m so glad I stumbled on to this blog. My search is over. Have bookmarked it. Going to follow it faithfully for our first-time holiday to London + Scotland this month. The fully guided tour seems to be the best of the lot as it probably gives you the maximum time possible to spend at the studio (I hope). By the way, tickets are sold out on the official site. Thank you so much, Abraham

3rd May 2019 at 4:39 pm

Hi Abraham – my pleasure, and I hope you have a wonderful tour. For sure, the tours are very popular so they sell out far in advance on the official website, but there are a number of other ways to get a trip, so I hope you are able to visit still 🙂

27th March 2019 at 7:48 pm

Hi can i ask the extra activities you mentioned are they free or do I need to account for extra spending money Regard emma

27th March 2019 at 7:59 pm

So the activities like the wand workshop, broomstick summoning and other interactive things like that are included. The only thing you would need money for is the giftshop, or if you want to eat or try butter beer. For the green screen broomstick flying experience, where you are filmed on a broomstick against a green screen, that is an extra price as you get the experience as photos or a DVD. There are also some other opportunities to buy photos through the tour, but these are of course optional 🙂

Have a wonderful time!

Excellent information! I’ve been to the WB Harry Potter Studios twice (2015, 2017), and you really covered everything in accurate detail.

One tiny error though it probably won’t confuse anyone: You wrote “Then you need to take a dedicated shuttle bus operated by the Studio Tour that runs from just outside Euston Station (it is well sign posted), that takes you directly to the studios.” I believe you meant “Watford Junction Station” instead of “Euston Station” in that sentence.

Thanks for your terrific work on the entire site. A colleague of mine sent me a link to it knowing I have led student/parent groups to London. I’ve enjoyed digging into it!

13th March 2019 at 5:00 pm

Thanks so much for your comment! We loved visiting and writing this post was a real pleasure 🙂 Thanks also for spotting that error – I’ve fixed it now 🙂

Thanks again!

The Basilisk

Harry Potter Walking Tour in London

My self-guided Harry Potter walking tour starts at Westminster station. It has lots of public transport links, so you can arrive on the Jubilee, Circle, or District lines of the Underground, or by local bus, bike, scooter, or on foot from other central London areas .

Westminster station featured in the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . When Harry is called to a hearing at the Ministry of Magic, he and Arthur Weasley navigate the tube barriers here before heading to his appointment.

After taking in the station, start this Harry Potter walk by heading up Parliament Street towards Trafalgar Square. Don’t miss the views of Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and Parliament Square as you set off.

Big Ben

Walk up the west side of the street and continue as it becomes Whitehall. Soon you’ll reach Downing Street, where you can peer through the gates to see Number 10. This has been the Prime Minister’s residence since 1735.

In Harry Potter’s world, the muggle Prime Minister meets with his wizarding counterparts in his office here to discuss matters of national importance.

After checking out Downing Street, cross over Whitehall and continue your Harry Potter walking tour by going up the road until you reach Horse Guards Avenue. Turn right at the Old War Office Building and walk down the street.

Old War Office Building, Whitehall, London

Horse Guards Avenue was used as the filming location for the staff entrance of the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 .

At the end of Horse Guards Avenue, turn left into Whitehall Gardens and take in the pretty green space as you walk to the other end.

When you reach Whitehall Place, exit the gardens, turn left, and walk down to Scotland Place. Turn right and walk under the overpass to get to Great Scotland Yard.

Whitehall Gardens, London

Great Scotland Yard was used as the filming location for the visitors’ entrance to the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 .

Once you’ve explored the street, make your way back to Whitehall, turn right, and continue towards Trafalgar Square. Home of the National Gallery and Nelson’s Column, this is one of the most famous landmarks in London.

When you reach the square, you’ll be in the location of the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 . Stars like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint walked down the red carpet here.

Trafalgar Square

After you’ve taken in the square, continue your Harry Potter walking tour by making your way to the east side of it and turning left to walk up Charing Cross Road. You’ll pass the National Portrait Gallery as you go.

Charing Cross Road will take you past West End theaters near Leicester Square as you head up towards Cecil Court. Once there, turn right and walk down the beautiful pedestrianized street.

With its colorful antiquarian bookshops and other treasure troves, rumor has it this lane in Covent Garden was used as a model for Diagon Alley.

Cecil Court, London

When you reach St Martin’s Lane, turn left, cross the street, and take a quick right to duck into Goodwin’s Court. This narrow Georgian alleyway is another place that’s thought to have been a model for Diagon Alley.

It’s also been said that it inspired Knockturn Alley, the shopping area off Diagon Alley that was filled with stores devoted to the Dark Arts.

When you get to the end of Goodwin’s Court, turn left onto Bedfordbury, then left onto New Row. Walk by the small cafes along the street (you can stop for a snack if you want to), then turn right and walk up St Martin’s Lane past the restaurants and theaters.

Covent Garden bar

Continue as the street becomes Upper St Martin’s Lane, then turn left on West Street and follow it as it curves up to Cambridge Circus.

Once at Cambridge Circus, you’ll spot the Palace Theatre in Soho opposite you. This is the home of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child , a popular stage production in London. It’s a must for any Potterhead.

The play is set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , and it centers around Harry’s relationship with his son, Albus Severus.

Harry Potter Theater, London

Whatever you decide, continue your Harry Potter walking tour by heading north up Charing Cross Road.

On your left you’ll pass Foyles, one of the biggest and most famous bookshops in London. You can pop in to buy your favorite Harry Potter book, or continue your self-guided walking tour by going up to St Giles Circus.

When you reach it, cross over and continue straight as Charing Cross Road becomes Tottenham Court Road.

This is where Harry, Ron, and Hermione sit at a cafe in the novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows . Ron says the word “Voldemort” and inadvertently reveals their location to the Death Eaters.

Bloomsbury Cafe, London

From here you have two choices. If you want a shorter walk, you can hop on the tube at Goodge Street and take the Northern line a few stops north to King’s Cross St Pancras station.

Alternatively, if you’re happy continuing on foot, you can walk through Bloomsbury to get there.

My favorite route is to turn right from Tottenham Court Road onto Bayley Street, walk past the eye-catching buildings in Bedford Square, continue straight on Montague Place alongside the British Museum, and go around Russell Square.

Bedford Square, Bloomsbury, London

From the northeast corner of the square, walk down Bernard Street, turn left on Marchmont Street, and follow it all the way up to Euston Road. You’ll pass by lots of cafes and shops as you go. If you want to, you can stop for a snack or meal.

When you get to Euston Road, turn right and take in the British Library and the stunning facade of St Pancras International as you make your way to King’s Cross station.

St Pancras featured as a filming location in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets . When Harry and Ron get locked out of Platform 9 3/4, they fly a Ford Anglia to school instead. As they take off, the facade of St Pancras can be seen in the background.

St Pancras, London

When you reach King’s Cross station, enter the building and head over to the barrier between platforms 9 and 10.

There’s a disappearing luggage trolley and a sign for Platform 9 3/4. It marks the spot where Harry and his classmates entered the magical world to take the Hogwarts Express to school.

There’s also a famous Harry Potter shop right next to Platform 9 3/4, so after taking a photo you can pick up some souvenirs if you want to.

Harry Potter luggage trolley, London

Afterwards, continue your self-guided Harry Potter walking tour by exiting the station and turning left to walk east down Pentonville Road until you reach Claremont Square.

This pretty place on the border of Clerkenwell and Islington was used as the filming location for 12 Grimmauld Place in two of the movies.

12 Grimmauld Place was the home of Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black. It served as the headquarters of the Order of Phoenix as well.

Claremont Square, London

Claremont Square stood in for Grimmauld Place in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 .

After you’ve taken in the houses around the green space, continue down Pentonville Road, take a left on Islington High Street, and catch the Northern line of the tube from Angel station to Bank station.

When you get off the tube, exit the station and walk east down Cornhill. Turn right on Gracechurch Street, then left into Leadenhall Market.

Leadenhall Market, London

This Victorian covered market was used as a filming location for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone . The entrance to The Leaky Cauldron pub was an optician’s shop in the market’s Bull’s Head Passage.

Once you’ve explored Leadenhall Market, continue your self-guided Harry Potter walking tour by exiting the same way you entered and turning left on Gracechurch Street.

Follow it down to Lombard Street, turn right, and walk past the historic buildings in the City of London .

Lombard Street, London

Stay on Lombard Street as it curves around to take you back to Bank Station, then turn left on Poultry and continue down it as it becomes Cheapside.

Eventually it will lead you to St Paul’s Cathedral. This famous church stood in for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban .

The spiral staircase the students took up to Professor Trelawney’s Divination classroom was actually the Dean’s Staircase in the church (it’s also called the Geometric Staircase). If you want to go in, you can book tickets to St Paul’s Cathedral here .

St Pauls Cathedral, London

Whether you go inside or not, continue your Harry Potter walking tour by exiting via the front of the church and turning left to walk east down the street called St Paul’s Churchyard.

When you reach Center Lane Gardens, turn right and walk along the pedestrianized Peter’s Hill to get to the Thames.

When you arrive at the river, you’ll be in front of Millennium Bridge. It replaced Brockdale Bridge in the opening scenes of the film Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince . A pack of Death Eaters targets the bridge as they wreak destruction on London.

Millennium Bridge, London

Walk across the bridge, then turn left along the river when you get to the South Bank and Tate Modern.

Follow the Thames Path along Bankside, passing icons like Shakespeare’s Globe as you go. When you reach Bank End, turn right, then make a quick left on Clink Street.

Walk under the railway bridge and past The Clink Prison Museum, then turn right on Stoney Street. This narrow road will take you down to Borough Market , London’s most famous food market.

Borough Market in London

Borough Market was used as a filming location for the entrance to The Leaky Cauldron pub in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban . The facade featured in the movie is the site of a (now closed) flower shop called Chez Michele.

From Borough Market, make your way past Southwark Cathedral on Green Dragon Court, then walk up the stairs to Borough High Street.

Cross the street where it’s safe, then take a right on Duke Street Hill. Follow it as it becomes Tooley Street. You’ll pass by London Bridge station as you make your way to Hay’s Galleria.

Hays Galleria, London

When you get there, turn left to go into the galleria. You can admire the eye-catching ceiling and sculpture in the middle as you walk out to the Thames. When you get to the river, turn right on The Queens Walk and head towards the HMS Belfast ship.

The HMS Belfast featured in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . As Harry and members of the order fly on broomsticks from 4 Privet Drive to 12 Grimmauld Place, they go over the Thames in London. On the way they pass the famous navy warship.

As your Harry Potter walking tour continues along the river, you’ll find yourself in More London, the area around City Hall. This place has great views of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London.

Tower Bridge, London

Like the HMS Belfast, Tower Bridge featured in the scene from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix where Harry and his friends fly over the Thames.

Your self-guided Harry Potter walking tour ends here, but you can continue exploring the area or head across Tower Bridge to pick up the tube at Tower Hill station.
