I am in the process of purchasing a tour pak and deciding if I should by new or get one painted. If anyone has used a painter that was reasonable and did good work can you please pass on there name. I have one quote so far of $800 that seems a little high at that point I could almost by on from Harley painted to match.

How to Remove and Disassemble the Harley Davidson Tour Pack for Painting

How to Remove and Disassemble the Harley Davidson Tour Pack for Painting

Harley Davidson is known for manufacturing exceptionally capable cruisers and grand American bagger motorcycles, decked with touring-oriented utilities and components, especially capacious and convenient motorcycle luggage pieces, such as a motorcycle Tour Pack . While some Harley motorcycles are equipped with standard tour packs, other models offer them as optional amenities. The introduction of the stock Tour-Pak® luggage carrier first occurred with the Harley Electra Glide Classic and the Ultra Glide motorcycles, as these bikes were the earliest fully decked members of the company’s bigger movement. Many Harley-Davidson enthusiasts took an instant liking to this additional accessory as it made packing for long-distance trips, camping trips, and cross-country trips a matter of mere minutes. Moreover, the Tour Pack’s classy, color-matched high-gloss finish further complemented the Harley motorcycles’ already refined stylistic elements, further enhancing their touring character and grandiose.

In 2014, Harley introduced the Project Rushmore upgrades for its renowned Electra Glide family of high-achieving touring motorcycles. Under this project, the bikes received many revised and improved parts, with the most prominent touring accessory being the premium Tour-Pak® designed to provide increased storage and act as a comprehensive luggage solution for a wide range of riding purposes and individualistic styles. As the motorcycle touring movement continued to experience exponential growth over the years, several aftermarket motorcycle luggage manufacturing companies also entered the market, offering high-quality Harley Tour Packs to riders at a comparatively lower price than the OEM Harley Davidson Tour Packs. A highly noteworthy example of such Harley luggage manufacturers is Viking Bags , which, in addition to Harley touring motorcycles , also offers stylish and versatile tour packs for Harley Dyna , Softail , Sportster, and street models . Since Harley Davidson motorcycles, such as cruisers, baggers, touring motorcycles, and lavish adventure motorcycles can be used to traverse well-paved roads and roadless regions, the installation of a touring pack on Harley motorcycles has become a necessity in the contemporary motorcycle scene.

Whether aftermarket or factory-made, Harley touring packs are designed to withstand harsh weather, even harsher landscapes, and prolonged rough use, and, if you opt for an aluminum rear motorcycle trunk , they can also provide much-needed crash resistance in the event of a fall, drop, or accidents. However, the painted fiberglass or ABS plastic Harley Davidson tour packs are highly susceptible to scratches due to exposure to debris, dust, gravel, and other damaging elements. Furthermore, when adding or removing items from the Harley tour packs, it is quite easy to damage or scratch the paint. Moreover, storing the motorcycle in the open air without a cover or a shed can also damage the touring pack paint. The fading or peeling paint can significantly diminish the bike’s allure and sophistication. In many cases, the bike’s resale value gets a hit if the original Harley tour packs are not properly maintained.

This article provides you with a comprehensive and easy-to-follow step-by-step guide on how to safely remove and disassemble the tour pack on your Harley Davidson motorcycle to restore its paint job and artistic charm. Though every Harley model is different and the steps may vary depending on your bike’s year and the tour pack you own, this guide will help you get started. Make sure to keep the owner’s manual with you and the installation/removal guide provided with the touring pack (in case it is aftermarket) while reading this article to compare the steps that might be different in your Harley Davidson tour pack’s process of removal and disassembly. However, the general method for painting the tour pack will remain essentially the same.

70 L Premium Extra Large Motorcycle Tour Pack  for Harley Touring Motorcycle

Located at the rear of your Harley motorcycle and securely placed on a metal luggage rack, the Harley Davidson tour pack, or the tour pack is a luggage system designed specifically for long hauls, cross-country trips, and any other riding styles that involve carrying large amounts of travel gear and possessions. From motorcycle tools to jackets, camera gear, and important documents, this large, lockable rear trunk or storage compartment on a Harley Davidson motorcycle is also used for everyday urban action, commutes, and short business trips. Harley touring packs come with either detachable quick-release systems or latches. Either way, removing the touring packs for packing and unpacking is quite easy. In addition to maximizing the bike’s storage capacity, the Harley Davidson tour packs also help with passenger comfort and entertainment as they come equipped with integrated speakers, lighting, and a passenger backrest.

If you own a Harley tour pack that is damaged beyond minor paint repair, it is recommended that you seek professional help for the repair. If you are looking for high-quality and affordable replacements, make sure to explore Viking Bags’ Harley Davidson tour pack collection or the universal fit motorcycle rear trunks collection. On the other hand, if you want to uninstall the touring pack from your Harley motorcycle to restore the damaged paint, follow the general guidelines provided infra .

2. How to Remove Harley Davidson Tour Pack?

harley tour pack painted

Harley Davidson Touring Road Glide FLTR/I Tour Packs

As mentioned, the process of removing the Harley Davidson touring pack will vary depending on the Harley motorcycle you ride, the bike’s model year, and the type of touring pack you have installed. The functionalities offered by the tour pack, such as lighting and speakers, may require disconnection with the bike’s electrical system. The general instructions provided below will give you the confidence to get started on your DIY Harley Davidson motorcycle tour pack maintenance project.

2.1 Tools Required to Remove the Harley Touring Pack

  • Allen Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Torx Wrench
  • Wrench or Socket Set
  • Clean Microfiber Cloth

For specific wrench sizes, check the instructional manual supplied with the instructional manual.

2.2 Quick Steps to Remove Bolt-on Harley Davidson Touring Pack

  • Once you have all the tools with you, start by removing the motorcycle seat and saddlebags to easily access the mounting hardware of the Harley tour pack. Also, removing the seat will make it easier to fully open the tour pack’s lid and fold the internal flaps back to see the wiring properly.
  • Next, if your touring pack has integrated speakers and lighting, such as in Harley Street Glide , Harley Road Glide , and Harley Ultra Limited Tour Paks®, make sure to disconnect all the wiring from the bike’s electrical system. The step is relatively easy, as all you have to do is locate connections and unplug them or simply remove the terminals.
  • Usually, the mounting bolts of the tour pack are located at the bottom, and to remove the trunk, you must first unfasten all the bolts. In case your touring pack does not have the bolts at the bottom, check its sides. Once located, it is best to first loosen all the bolts and then remove them, as this practice reduces the chances of losing any of the mounting hardware. Once you have removed all the bolts and lock nuts, simply lift the tour pak off the luggage rack .
  • Make sure you place all the nuts and bolts safely in a storage box or a drawer so you don’t lose them. Looking for the right hardware can be a huge hassle if the stock bolts get misplaced.
  • Clean the tour pack with a lint-free microfiber cloth before disassembling it for paint prep.

2.3 Quick Steps to Remove Detachable Harley Tour Pack

  • If your Harley motorcycle boasts a detachable touring pack setup, start with seat removal first. Usually, Harley Davidson touring motorcycles have a long one-piece seat for both rider and passenger, and it comes right off if you pull gently at the back of the seat.
  • Once the seat is removed, you should be able to see all the wiring and connectors for speakers and lighting. Disconnect the wiring to ensure safe touring pack removal.
  • To take off detachable Harley Davidson tour packs, there is a release mechanism on the bottom of the tour pack on each side. This release mechanism is secured on the motorcycle thanks to the docking hardware. Luckily, for detachable touring packs, you don’t need to unfasten and remove the docking hardware as the Harley Davidson touring pack will come right off with the quick-release system intact.
  • Carefully lift the tour pack off the bike and set it up on a nearby workstation or table.
  • Clean the detachable touring pak for the Harley motorcycle with a clean cloth after disassembling it.

3. How to Disassemble a Harley Davidson Tour Pack?

harley tour pack painted

54L - Voyage Extra Large Chopped Tour Pack for Harley Touring Motorcycles

After you remove the tour pack from your Harley Davidson motorcycle, you would have to disassemble some of its components, including the attached backrest, hinges, latches, lid, and inner storage compartments, if any. It is worth mentioning that the disassembling process may vary depending on the internal and external features of the touring pack. Therefore, you must always consult the motorcycle owner’s manual in case of stock Harley tour packs or the instruction manual provided with the OEM or aftermarket Harley Davidson touring packs.

3.1 Tools Required to Disassemble the Harley Davidson Tour Pack

It is the same as those required to remove the Tour Pack.

  • Allen or Torx Wrenches

3.2 Quick Steps to Disassemble the Harley Davidson Tour Pack

  • Ensure you always start with disconnecting any wiring or electrical connections for speakers, lighting, aftermarket USB charging kits, or aftermarket GPS systems.
  • Remove the passenger backrest (if attached) by unfastening its mounting bolts. In addition, remove the quick-release brackets if you own a detachable tour pack, handles, lid strut/lid stay if any, internal organizers, dividers, and internal soft liner (if any). Be sure to spare some time to wash all the internal detachable organizers and liners during the entire DIY project.
  • Some Harley touring packs come with attached luggage racks, so make sure you also locate and remove the mounting bolts of these luggage racks.
  • Remove all the fasteners on the surface of the Harley tour pack, holding the lid in place. Once all the screws, hinges, and latches are removed from the lid section, make sure to store them safely.
  • Avoid removing the rubber liner or weather seal on the edges of the tour pack. Even if it is easy to remove and put back on, the process might reduce its effectiveness, diminishing your touring pack’s weather resistance and vibration-damping capabilities.
  • It is recommended that you take pictures of every step while disassembling the tour pack as it will help you repeat the process in reverse to assemble it correctly after painting. As for safely storing all the mounting hardware removed, make sure to put the hardware in separate ziplock bags and label them accordingly.
  • Use a lint-free microfiber cloth to thoroughly clean the tour pack and inspect it carefully for any cracks and other similar signs of damage.

If disassembling the Harley Davidson touring pack for paint seems like a hectic and complicated task, it is best to seek professional help. However, you can also choose not to disassemble the tour pack for repainting, painting, and restoration. The only concern in this regard is that paint can get on the shiny chrome hinges and latches, but you can clean them using steel wool. On the other hand, it might be nearly impossible for you to correctly realign the latches and hinges. Therefore, if you want to save yourself the hassle of ensuring a perfect fit after painting the tour pack, simply avoid disassembling it.

4. How to Prep and Paint Harley Davidson Touring Pack?

harley tour pack painted

Harley Davidson Touring Street Glide FLHX Tour Pack

Painting a Harley Davidson tour pack seems relatively easy and can be performed easily provided you master the surface prepping skills. To acquire the industry-grade finish and match your bike’s impeccable factory paint job, you must take your time with the sanding process. Also, make sure that the temperature and weather conditions are suitable for the paint adhesion and drying process. Paint in a controlled setting, such as a properly ventilated garage, with moderate temperature, ideally 60°F-75°F, and low humidity levels, about 65%-70% for the best results. It is also advisable to wear a protective mask to avoid inhaling paint droplets. Painting the Harley touring pack is a time-consuming process and you might have to repeat the prepping process several times before achieving just the right finish. However, painting the Harley touring pack yourself has many benefits, including reduced costs, a better understanding of your Harley motorcycle’s systems, and improved painting skills that will allow you to custom paint your bike at home whenever you want a different look.

4.1 Tools Required to Prep and Paint Harley Touring Pack

  • Clean Cloth
  • Soapy Water
  • Water for Wet Sanding
  • 800 Grit Sandpaper
  • 1000 Grit Sandpaper
  • Spray Paint

4.2 Steps to Paint Harley Tour Pack

  • Clean the Harley tour pack with a clean cloth and soapy water to ensure that there is no grease or grime present on the surface. This step helps preserve the adhesive properties of primer, paint, and clear coat.
  • Prep the tour pack by wet sanding it using 800 grit sandpaper to remove the existing paint, and high-gloss finish, and smooth out any scratches. While preparing the tour pack with sandpaper, be sure not to rush this step as it determines the quality of the paint finish at the end. It may take you a couple of hours to properly sand either side of the Harley tour pack. Once done, use a fine 1000-grit sandpaper to create a smooth and even surface for primer and paint application.
  • After sanding, thoroughly wipe down both sides of the tour pack with a dry, clean lint-free microfiber cloth.
  • Next, apply an even coat of primer on the sanded surface to create a smooth finish. Allow the primer to dry completely before dry sanding it with a 1000 grit sandpaper to create a rough texture. This step will help the paint stick to the tour pack ensuring a sophisticated factory-standard finish.
  • Apply the high-gloss lacquer paint using a spray gun or rattle can. Make sure to apply three thin coats of paint and let it dry completely before reassembling the reinstalling the tour pack.
  • If the paint you are using does not come with a clear coat, apply two to three coats of clear separately and let it dry.
  • To closely color-match the tour pack with your Harley’s original paint scheme, you can also apply flake if the factory paint job offers flake.
  • Once the paint is dry, wet sand the surface again with 1000 grit or even finer sandpaper to remove any imperfections or irregularities in your DIY paint job. You can also use a rotary buffer machine to buff out your freshly painted Harley Davidson tour pack.
  • Once the painting is done, reassemble the Harley Davidson tour pack by following the same steps you performed to disassemble it but in reverse order.
  • Reinstall the newly painted blemish-free tour pack on your Harley Davidson motorcycle and embark on another exciting adventure.

5. Last Words

Harley Davidson Tour-Paks® has become an essential travel gear or part of the luggage system for many riders, whether they travel on long routes frequently or just use their Harleys to commute to work in style. Purposeful and sturdy, Harley Davidson tour packs offer many benefits when it comes to transporting your possessions on a two-wheeler. From organizers to weather seals, impact-resistant corner guards to key lockable mechanisms, Harley Davidson touring packs elevate your motorcycle touring experiences.

Though low maintenance, tour packs often get paint failures that can spoil the bike’s overall impression and attitude. Luckily, these paint fails can be fixed at home, provided you learn the different functionalities of the touring pack, such as its mounting systems, any electrical connections of the integrated audio and lighting systems, and their overall alignment and structure.

If you familiarize yourself with these operations of the tour pack, you can easily remove, disassemble, and paint your Harley Davidson tour packs anytime a need arises. Furthermore, learning these skills will also increase the aesthetic customization opportunities for you. Make sure to thoroughly read this guide, the Harley motorcycle owner’s manual, and the touring pack instructional guide before performing the removal and disassembly methods.

Painting new tour pack

harley tour pack painted

  • Add to quote

Morning everybody. Hoping someone can give me some tips on my new tour pack. I bought an aftermarket chopped tour pack that is white gelcoat. I want to paint it myself, but I've never worked with fiberglass. The surface is not smooth and my question is, should I sand the gelcoat or prime it and then sand? After I paint it, should I wet sand the paint and then clear coat it or wet sand only after I clear coat it? Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated.

harley tour pack painted

I do not know the answer ...but take picture during each step you end up taking... Would love to see the progress... Good luck Sent from Motorcycle.com App

I'll do it.

harley tour pack painted

Use buildup primer than sand after three coats of paint clear coat and color sand until smooth and even then buff for gloss.Use a base coat clear coat process urethane paint.

Thanks. That's what I needed to know. When you say color sand, is that the same as wet sanding? Sorry if that seems like a dumb question.

harley tour pack painted

Nice looking tourpack! When I did mine, I checked for imperfections, and corrected with a light body fill. buy 1500 and 2000 sandpaper and wet sand, dry will gouge into the gel coating. This will remove any silicone in the surfaces. Once you prime, wet sand to get any over spray and imperfections out. Use a tack cloth to remove dust. 3 even coats of the color of your choice will be enough. ensure you don't have any imperfections on your paint, then clear coat. I gave my tourpack 3 coats, giving it time to dry between coats but if you have a heated booth the process is faster. Let it sit and cure, then wet sand with 2000 paper to smooth out. The polishing is another story and I am not the man for that subject, I burned the paint a few times.

Thanks for the info. I hope to get it primed today.

Tour Pak Wall Mount

harley tour pack painted

  • Add to quote

I've been working on clearing out stuff in the garage in an attempt to find more space. One thing that just takes up a lot of room is my tour pak. Prior to getting a vertical wall mount, it was just sitting on the top of an upright freezer, higher and more precarious than I cared for. Now it is at a more comfortable height/position for loading and unloading. I also have the added benefit of a couple extra hooks at the bottom of the bracket to hang jackets, freeing up even more space! If anyone is interested, the bracket came from KISS Products in Tennessee Tour pack wall mount, EZ Mount, Harley Davidson tour pack storage rack and is a quality product.

Great idea! Well priced product. Thanks! Now where did that rack on top of the Tour Pak come from?

It is the Stealth Tour Pak rack, part # 53000242.

harley tour pack painted

I'm using the same TP mounts (w/o the hooks) for both the wife's and mine. I mounted ours way higher than I would've liked due to lack of space lol. I have to get in a ladder to bring them down. Good news is we only use the a few times a year. These have worked really well for a few years now.

harley tour pack painted

Very nice for the money. Been thinking about making one, but might look into this one instead.

harley tour pack painted

I have one like this Harley Davidson Tour Pak Wall Mount | eBay I've been very happy with it. $100

harley tour pack painted

I'm not going to feel sorry for you when I'm climbing the ladder to pull the TP's down lol. Nice option to have.

harley tour pack painted

I just went the cheap route. a couple of shelf brackets, and a small shelf board that fits in between the side rails of the mounting bracket. the shelf is long enough that the rear section of the mount will hit the shelf before I can push it into the wall, and I can hang stuff from underneath as well. think I have $3.50 tied up in it.... idk why it turned it sideways....

Automotive exterior Room Shelf Vehicle Electronics

Good idea. Is the Tour Pak locked on your shelf board?

harley tour pack painted

I just received the Kiss mount and plan to install today. Glad to hear the good feedback.

amhogn, I think you will like it. I have to have help getting it on/off the wall because of my back, but it makes it super convenient having it hanging vertically versus having it sitting high up on a horizontal surface.

2024 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, And Pricing

Built for touring in comfort with updated performance.

What's new for 2024, 2024 harley-davidson road glide limited performance and capability, design and styling, chassis and handling, 2024 harley-davidson road glide limited price and availability, 2024 harley-davidson road glide limited versus its competitors, he said/she said.

Harley-Davidson's Road Glide Limited rolls into 2024 with up-to-date gadgetry while maintaining that classic Road Glide bodywork from the 2020 version. Built for comfort and performance on the superslab, the Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited boasts an upright riding position for both pilot and pillion with footboards all around and a generous stock passenger backrest. Ample storage in the saddlebags and Tour-Pak gives it plenty of utility as a touring motorcycle , commuter, or errand-runner / grocery-getter, plus the extensive fairings provide lots of protection from the elements.

The Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight engine packs 114 cubic inches and plenty of power to pull this baby off the line and up through the gear range. It comes with basic electronic ride-support features, but for a price, you can score all the best, corner-optimized electronics The MoCo has to offer. H-D supplies a handful of paint packages, but this year, blackout is the word of the day as it dominates the underpinnings with no chrome option available. Premium suspension and adjustable rear shocks round out the goodies.

2024 harley-davidson road glide limited.

Expert Opinion:  I'm digging a lot about this bike. It's got a somewhat-souped engine, at least compared to the M-8 107, and extra cooling capacity with radiators for the liquid-cooling down in the lower fairings. It throws plenty of light forward for driving at night with its dual LED projectors and protects the pilot from the elements fairly well while underway. Seat height is reasonable, and the storage is voluminous with plenty for the passenger to love. H-D's infotainment is top-notch as well. On the downside, you have to go out of pocket for the remaining RDRS features, which is shocking on a “Limited” to say the least. The price, as always, is not a positive selling point, but it is what it is and the factory has never really used price to entice buyers, at least not in recent history. I wasn't blown away by the color packages either, which is disappointing coming from the King of Paint on one of its Limited builds.

  • Powerful powerplant
  • Ample storage
  • Decent pilot protection
  • Stock ABS and Linked-Brakes add stability
  • Comfy cockpit
  • Mediocre paint packages
  • RDRS features cost extra

The Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited first rolled in MY20, and maintains the same body style in spite of the other Road Glide siblings recently receiving new bodywork and an updated overall look for the family. ABS and Harley's Linked-Brake feature come stock, but the rest of the RDRS goodies are optional equipment, which is odd since H-D “Limited” machines usually come with all the bells and whistles. Blackout coverage abounds with chrome falling off the trim package choices for MY24 and new colorways dress up this year's offerings. The Milwaukee-Eight 114 reprises its role as the beating heart for this beast with plenty of torque and thermal stability due to the Twin-Cooled yummygoodness.

2024 Highlights

  • Outstanding protection from the elements by fairings and windscreen
  • Ample secure dry-storage space
  • Twin-Cooled M-8 114 powerplant
  • Stock ABS and Linked-Brake features.
  • Sumptuous pilot and passenger amenities

H-D stuffed an upgraded version of its newish Milwaukee-Eight engine. With a reworked top end and new air box, this mill packs another 7 cubic-inches into the jugs with a 102 mm bore and 114.3 mm stroke for its 1,868 cc overall displacement . A mild compression ratio of only 10.5-to-1 means you feed it 92 octane road champagne with no risk of pre-ingition/detonation/dieseling that could damage the plant.

The 2024 H-D Road Glide Limited produces 93 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque. Liquid Twin-Cooling deals with the extra heat from the extra power and torque to make this engine more thermally stable than the straight-up air-cooled models. The torque tops out at an incredibly low 2,750 rpm with much of that available lower in the range for solid holeshots and acceleration throughout the gear range. A chain-type primary drive carries engine power to the slipper clutch that adds a layer of backtorque mitigation with a light clutch lever pull and broad friction zone for precise control. A low-maintenance and quiet carbon-reinforced belt final drive completes the drivetrain.

Performance Specifications

Top 10 iconic harley-davidson road glide models.

The current Road Glide family is heavily based on the old Tour Glide with its fixed front fairing, windshield, and luggage. A full-length front fender leads the way with the usual scripted badging, but with high-cut sides for a bit of a custom flair. The frame-mounted front fairing houses a pair of H-D's LED headlights to split the night. It comes with vents beside the headlights and at the base of the windshield for pilot comfort and a reduction in the wearisome head-buffet effect at the top of the wind pocket. At the inner fairing, a pair of round gauges join with a large touchscreen that handles all the infotainment goodies and ride-control electronics in one location.

A large, six-gallon fuel tank gives the Road Glide Limited plenty of legs to cross even the largest fuel deserts in the U.S. road system. Seat height meaasures 27.2 inches off the deck, providing you have at least 180 pounds of body weight to get the suspension smooshed down, which leaves you relatively low and in a commanding position at stops, even for riders with shorter inseams. The passenger has a thick seat and a wrap-around backrest for comfort and security, plus the rear speakers are right there to spread the jams around. Hard-side bags join with a Tour-Pak that comes complete with a luggage rack on top for that little bit of extra stowage for a total of 4.7 cubic feet.

Specifications And Dimensions

2024 harley-davidson ultra limited: a comprehensive guide on features, specs, and pricing.

The 2020 Road Glide rebuild came with a new frame that persists into MY24. It improves handling for this heavyweight machine as intended. H-D still uses tubular mild steel members for its double-downtube / dual-cradle build with a rectangular cross-section backbone for strength. MIG welding ties it all together, except for the bolt-on rear frame section. The welded mild steel swingarm finishes out the bones.

A set of 49 mm Showa forks float the front end on 4.6 inches of travel with the Dual Bending Valve technology that delivers automatic, demand-driven damping levels for a ride far superior to plain vanilla stems. Out back, the rear shocks come with a hand-adjustable preload feature for quick, tool-free responses to changes in passenger/cargo loads and three inches of travel. A set of 18-inch, Gloss Black Slicer II wheels round out the rolling chassis and come shod in Dunlop H-D Series rubber in a 130/70 and 180/55 at the front and rear, respectively. This bike weighs 932 pounds wet, so it's no surprise that the factory sprung for the dual front brakes with 300 mm discs that go all around, same as the four-bore calipers at both ends. The stock ABS and Linked-Brakes features ensure safety and stability under heavy braking actions.

Chassis And Suspension

Every 2024 harley-davidson model ranked by power.

The 2024 H-D Road Glide Limited costs $32,499. That's for the base Billiard Gray colorway. Vivid Black adds another $750, while the Sharkskin Blue or Blue Burst adds a smooth grand. If you want the two-tone Red Rock / Vivid Black colorway, it'll set you back another $1,800 over MSRP. If you opt for the Rider Safety Enhancements, that'll add $1,100 to the price.

Pricing And Features

Big-bore touring bikes are common, but not necessarily in the American style once you get away from U.S. marques, so the slim pickings had me looking at Indian's Pursuit Limited and the R 18 Transcontinental from BMW.

How The Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Compares To The Indian Pursuit Limited

Indian's Pursuit Limited hits many of the same design points as does the Road Glide Limited from the protective fairings to the luggage with a large, powerful V-twin engine in between. The resurgent U.S. brand has its own deep historical roots to draw upon, and it carries the genetic markers from models out of Indian's storied past. It starts with the shape of the front fender that comes complete with the iconic war bonnet ornament. The Pursuit Limited rocks a similar, frame-mount front fairing along with the fairing lowers that protect your legs, so both are roughly equal as far as rider comfort goes.

Power comes from the 108 cubic-inch PowerPlus engine to the tune of 122 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque against 93/122 to leave the Indian with the all-around power advantage. Infotainment is roughly equal between these two, which is accessible through the seven-inch color touchscreen that rides below the analog gauges in the cockpit. Color selection is okay enough, and the 2024 Pursuit Limited starts at $34,999 MSRP for the base model, and $36,499 with the Powerband Audio package.

2022 First Look: Indian Pursuit Limited & Pursuit Dark Horse

How the harley-davidson road glide limited compares to the bmw r 18 transcontinental.

BMW probably has the closest match in the American-style tourbike category abroad, and it's clear that the designers referenced H-D and Indian styles when drawing up the R 18 Transcontinental. The front fender approximates the look of the other two, complete with a chrome trim piece not entirely unlike H-D's old fender decoration. It's alone in fairing type though, with a fork-mounted, sorta Batwing-esque fairing, but that's minor in the grand scheme of things. Behind the glass, the cockpit is remarkably similar with two large round analog gauges, two small round gauges, and a large color TFT screen.

The Boxer-twin engine is iconic in its own right with a long line of succession leading up to this point. It packs 1,802 cc with 91 horsepower and 116 pound-feet of torque, which is close enough for government work but still the weakest of the three. It's also the least expensive, with a starting price of $24,890. One point of interest is the Adaptive Cruise Control, which looks like it actually has a small, forward-facing radar rangefinder that measures and monitors the distance between yourself and whatever is immediately in front of you. I've been saying for years that I'd like a cruise control like that, it just seems so much safer.

2022 BMW R 18 B and Transcontinental

My husband and fellow motorcycle writer, TJ Hinton , says,

“The fixed fairing is more popular than ever for folks looking for comfort while they tour, commute, or whatever. Coupled with the tall glass and stock lower fairings, it adds up to considerable protection for the rider. If there's a downside, it's that the full RDRS suite isn't stock, which is disappointing on a Limited of any type at this price point.”

“Starting out as the Tour Glide in the 1980s, the Road Glide was all about long-distance touring comfort, but styling was a bit of a downer. Project Rushmore in 2015 gave the Road Glide the styling boost it needed to bring the model into favor with touring riders. With the Milwaukee-Eight engine, performance takes a front-burner position, so you have a bike that'll go the distance in style and comfort. With the frame-mounted fairing, the wind won't fight you for steering like a fork-mounted fairing would. I'm still not a fan of the look of the sharknose fairing, but when it comes to the bike, if I'm sitting on it, I'm not looking at it, and you're not getting much better than the Road Glide Limited without getting into the CVO models.”
