GRAHAM NASH Announces Australian Tour 2024

Sixty years of songs and stories.

11 January 2024 The Rockpit

Legendary artist Graham Nash, as a founding member of both the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash, is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Nash will launch his first solo headline tour of Australia and New Zealand with a dozen performances in March 2024, including a two-day stop at the Port Fairy Folk Festival. Performing songs from across his sixty-year career, Nash will be joined on stage by his long-time musical partners, Shane Fontayne (guitar and vocals) and Todd Caldwell (keyboards and vocals).

Nash’s recent touring includes 2023 sold-out tours in the US and the UK and has had critics raving about performances.

“Nash reached into a treasure chest of originals, collaborations, and covers that resonated with everyone…most of the lyrics were so well crafted that their messages have long been an important part of so many people’s lives for so many years…Nash truly does speak from a passionate heart. His inner voice is true, his songs and lyrics are authentic, and he is sincere.” — Finger Lakes Times.

Nash released his most recent album, Now, in May 2023 to four-star reviews and critical acclaim. The New York Times said,“…Now feels remarkably content as if Nash has slipped into a favourite old overcoat to find a cache of new tunes stuffed inside a pocket” while the American Songwriter wrote, “Now could be considered a resurgence of sorts…the material is softly lit and effortlessly assured, conveying the calming and caressing sound that all so frequently added its soothing sobriety to CSN and CSNY.”

Graham Nash has seen rock history unfold at some of its seminal moments–from the launch of the British Invasion to the birth of the Laurel Canyon movement a year later. An extraordinary Grammy Award® winning renaissance artist–and self-described “simple man”–Nash was inducted twice into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, for his work with CSN and his work as a solo artist.

Towering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his long and multi-faceted career, stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of our lives for nearly six decades, a body of work that American Songwriter calls “just as significant today as they were when written some 50 years ago.”

Nash’s remarkable body of work began with his contributions to the Hollies opus from 1964 to’68, including “Stop Stop Stop,” and “On A Carousel,” among others.

The classic union of Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young) yielded songs that are lightning rods embedded in our DNA, starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express,” “Pre-Road Downs” and “Lady of the Island,” from the first Crosby, Stills & Nash LP, and his iconic “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” from CSNY’s Déjà Vu.

Nash’s career as a solo artist took flight in 1971, with the release of his solo debut Song’s For Beginners which included “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness”, the album’s two chronicles of society frayed edges in the Vietnam-era and three compositions that reflect back on the storied breakup of Nash and Joni Mitchell, “Better Days,” “I Used To Be A King” (which recalibrates the Hollies’ “King Midas In Reverse”), and “Simple Man”.  Wild Tales followed in 1974(with “Prison Song,” “Oh! Camil,” and “You’ll Never Be the Same”).

The most resilient, long-lived and productive partnership to emerge from the CSNY camp was launched (before Nash’s Wild Tales) with the eponymously titled Graham Nash/David Crosby (1972), bookended by Nash’s “Southbound Train” as the opening track and “Immigration Man” as the closer. Nash also contributed the hits “Just A Song Before I Go” to CSN (1977) and “Wasted on the Way,” to  Daylight Again  (1982).

Graham Nash Announces 2024 Australian Tour

By Music Feeds

British musician Graham Nash will perform songs from his six-decade back catalogue on his 2024 Australian tour. Nash, a founding member of The Hollies and Crosby, Stills & Nash , was announced as one of the headliners of the 2024 Port Fairy Folk Festival , which takes place from Friday, 8th to Monday, 11th March. Nash will begin his national headline tour at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on Thursday, 7th March.

Nash will play theatres and concert halls in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and Brisbane before the tour ends in Tweed Heads on Wednesday, 27th March. He’ll play shows in Auckland and Christchurch before commencing the run around Australia. Find more details below.

Crosby, Stills & Nash – ‘Marrakesh Express’

Nash was born in Lancashire in northern England in 1942. He founded The Hollies with Allan Clarke in 1962 and remained with the band up until 1968, performing on songs such as ‘Just One Look’, ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘I Can’t Let Go’.

After meeting Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield) and David Crosby (The Byrds), Nash moved to California and co-founded Crosby, Stills & Nash. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1969, giving rise to folk rock staples such as ‘Guinnevere’ and ‘Wooden Ships’.

Neil Young soon joined the band, whose name was updated to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The quartet’s debut album, Déjà Vu , arrived in 1970 and sprouted the majority of their best-known songs, including the Nash-penned ‘Teach Your Children’ and ‘Our House’.

Nash has been releasing solo records since the early 1970s; his latest solo LP, Now , came out in May 2023. His CSN band mate David Crosby died in January 2023 at the age of 81.

Graham Nash Delivers Sixty Years Of History At First Australian Show #REVIEW

by Paul Cashmere on March 8, 2024

At Graham Nash’s first Australian concert in Melbourne for the ‘Sixty Years of Songs & Stories’ tour Graham mentioned how David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Neil Young and himself often spoke to each other song. For us for fans, they were songs we bought, played, heard on the radio, loved, they are our classics, they are our soundtrack. To Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, they were letters between friends.

For ‘Sixty Years of Songs & Stories’ Graham Nash takes us into the holy grail of these historic and classic songs. I had no idea until he told us tonight that ‘I Used to Be a King’ was about his breakup with Joni Mitchell. Graham also mentioned as part of his stories that Neil wrote ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’ about his breakup with Joni. I knew the story of ‘Our House’, a literal description of Joni buying a vase, bringing it home and Graham lighting a fire. The opening lyrics “I’ll light the fire/You place the flowers in the vase/That you bought today” are an exact narrative of the moment. ‘Wounded Bird’ is a Graham song written for the Stephen Stills about his relationship with Judy Collins. (Collins was also the ‘Judy’ in CSN’s ‘Suite: Judy Blue Eyes’). Stills was also honored with the set ending with a cover of Stills classic ‘Love The One You’re With’. No doubt we will hear more stories of the era when Judy Collins performs in Melbourne next week.

Some songs were created instantly. ‘Just A Song Before I Go’ was a song Graham wrote on a dare just as he was about to leave a friends house. ‘Cathedral’ was conceived in the back of a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce while on an Acid Trip. ‘Marrakesh Express’ is a literal account of a train trip to Marrakesh in 1968.

The show never strayed far from remembering Graham’s closest friend David Crosby. CSNY broke down to CSN and then to CN before reaching solo status. David Crosby and Graham Nash recorded multiple albums together outside CSNY and CSN with three of those from the 70s represented in the set. One of those, ‘Immigration Man’ from the 1972 ‘Wind on the Water’, is another literal account of Graham being refused entry into Canada.

This was a special show for a number of reasons. 1. Just the history in a bottle here makes the ticket worthwhile 2. This songs a classics and will be around long after you, me and Graham are gone. 3. Graham is 82. Its remarkable the man has the energy he has and he definitively not saying he is about to retire but as life has taught us “enjoy every waking moment”.

Legendary Graham Nash Announces Australian Tour 2024

graham nash tour australia

Legendary artist Graham Nash , as a founding member of both the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash, is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Nash will launch his first solo headline tour of Australia and New Zealand with a dozen performances in March 2024, including a two-day stop at the Port Fairy Folk Festival. Performing songs from across his sixty year career, Nash will be joined on stage by his long-time musical partners, Shane Fontayne (guitar and vocals) and Todd Caldwell (keyboards and vocals).

Nash’s recent touring includes 2023 sold out tours in the US and the UK and has had critics raving about performances.

Nash released his most recent album, Now, in May 2023 to four-star reviews and critical acclaim.

Graham Nash has seen rock history unfold at some of its seminal moments– from the launch of the British Invasion to the birth of the Laurel Canyon movement a year later. An extraordinary Grammy Award® winning renaissance artist – and self-described “simple man”– Nash was inducted twice into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, for his work with CSN and his work as a solo artist.

Nash’s remarkable body of work began with his contributions to the Hollies opus from 1964 to ’68, including Stop Stop Stop , and On A Carousel , among others.

The classic union of Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young) yielded songs that are lightning rods embedded in our DNA, starting with Nash’s Marrakesh Express , Pre-Road Downs and Lady of the Island , from the first Crosby, Stills & Nash LP, and his iconic Teach Your Children and Our House from CSNY’s Déjà Vu.

Nash’s career as a solo artist took flight in 1971, with the release of his solo debut Songs For Beginners which included Chicago/We Can Change the World and Military Madness , the album’s two chronicles of society’s frayed edges in the Vietnam-era and three compositions that reflect back on the storied breakup of Nash and Joni Mitchell, Better Days , I Used To Be A King (which recalibrates the Hollies’ King Midas In Reverse ), and Simple Man . Wild Tales followed in 1974 (with Prison Song , Oh! Camil , and You’ll Never Be the Same ).

The most resilient, long-lived and productive partnership to emerge from the CSNY camp was launched (before Nash’s Wild Tales) with the eponymously titled Graham Nash/David Crosby (1972), bookended by Nash’s Southbound Train as the opening track and Immigration Man as the closer. Nash also contributed the hits Just A Song Before I Go to CSN (1977) and Wasted on the Way , to Daylight Again (1982).

graham nash tour australia

What a great pleasure to be able to see a living legend and one of the great songsmiths of all time. Extraordinary memories for this writer of Graham’s work with the Hollies in the sixties (those searing harmonies) and the global domination coming from his work with Crosby, Stills and Nash (and  Young). Who else apart from CSN would count Woodstock (1969) as their second live band performance.

Graham’s multi skilled band tonight comprised keyboard player Todd Caldwell, Zak Djanikian (guitar, sax and mandolin and drums) and Adam Minkoff  (bass and guitar and at times, drums). In addition, all three band members supported Graham with really accurate backup vocals and harmonies. The man himself moved between guitar and keyboards during the course of the evening.

Tonight’s set included anthemic songs from both of Graham’s iconic bands, plus material from his solo projects.

The evening opened with ‘Wasted on the Way’ before barrelling into Marrakesh Express. Graham’s succinct setting up of the context for Marrakesh (and literally all songs on the set list tonight) was really delightful. Fancy a strange train journey from Casablanca to Morocco yielding a piece of music of this quality. The Hollies knocked back Marrakesh Express because it wasn’t commercial enough.

After a short deliberation on the craziness of the world, Graham launched into ‘Military Madness’, before rocking out to ‘I Used to be King’, a song written for Joni Mitchel “after we broke up”.

graham nash tour australia

A fascinating story on an encounter with a young songwriter called Graham Gouldman (10CC) set the scene for the Hollies classic ‘Bus Stop’ complete with Indian inflected mandolin lines, before moving into the CSNY classic ‘Right Between the Eyes’.

As the vibe of the concert continued to build, one of the evening’s highlights presented itself in the form of ‘Wind on the Water’, a tribute to the late great David Crosby. The stage was blacked out, an excerpt of the song was played featuring David singing, before the band were revealed featuring Graham on piano. A truly magic moment, including imitation whale sounds from guitar.

‘Immigration Man’ found Graham reflecting on an unfortunate border experience in Vancouver. Beautiful  harmonies  and band member instrument swapping were used to great effect, before the band moved on to ‘Better Days’ featuring some tasteful saxophone playing.

The first half of the set was closed out with another anthemic song in ‘Love the One You’re With’. The audience were encouraged to sing along and everyone did. Good vibrations before intermission.

The second half of the set started with ‘Simple Man’ featuring Graham performing solo on piano and harp, before moving solo (on acoustic guitar) into a beautiful  Steven Stills piece called ‘4 and 20’. Graham described the experience of hearing this piece played to him by Steven Stills in a hotel room, as one of the most emotionally transformative songs he had heard.  In the spirit of Steven Stills (and some of his relationship challenges) Graham then moved into ‘Wounded Bird’, before commencing ‘Taken at All’ (a song about getting back on the road) and ‘A Better Life’ from his latest album ‘Now’

,with the associated message of leaving the world in a better place for our children.

Graham set the scene nicely for the next offering in ‘Cathedral’. The inspiration for this piece seemed to arrive for Graham after an experiment involving hallucinogens, a trip to Stonehenge in a Rolls Royce and a visit to Winchester Cathedral.  Fascinating.   An epic performance by the band.

The classics kept rolling including ‘Just a Song  Before I Go’, The Joni Mitchell inspired ‘Our House’ and then we were at the end of a truly inspired night of quality songs and stories.

The encore continued to take the show to even greater heights with four classic songs starting with ‘Find the Cost of Freedom’ (with some really soulful down tuned acoustic guitars) and the classic sing along ‘Teach Your Children’.  A  great response here from the audience.

Two catalogue classics finished off the encore starting with ‘Chicago’. The band really worked  the dynamics of this extraordinary song delivering a memorable experience of harmonies, guitars and drums at their peak.

The Neil Young inspired ‘Ohio’ continued on from where ‘Chicago’ left off, showcasing Graham leading the band in a really tight and raunchy version of this song. The Neil Young inflected guitar playing helped create a big finish to this exceptional evening.

The Graham Nash experience continues to travel along navigating musical anthemic twists and turns, drawing from a catalogue that is clearly one of the best in the business.

Again, great songs and great stories from a legend.

Graham Nash will be appearing next at the Port Fairy Folk Festival.

Wonderful show, Nash sounds as great as ever. He was particularly taken with Hoyt Sherman Place, and commented on it several times throughout the show.

He mentioned that during sound check he moved around the auditorium to check the sound in different spots, and was amazed with great acoustics in the room. So much so, that at one point he and his guitarist (Shane Fontayne, also amazing!) stepped in front of the microphones, turned off the amps and the sound system and did a song completely unplugged.

It was like sitting in a living room or around a campfire with you pal Graham Nash. An amazing moment, something I had never seen done before.

And he was right about the acoustics at Hoyt Sherman. It sounded great, even in the back row.

Truly a tremendous show. From what I'd heard about this tour I was expecting the two-album retrospective he'd been doing. Instead he unleashed a quintessential Graham Nash show. He played everything you'd expect plus a lot more. LOH proved a very intimate setting, perfect for appreciating Graham's many song introductions as well as the nuances of his song craft. For a 3-piece they produced a lot of sound. The chorus of Cathedral understandably fell short of its familiar cacophony. Otherwise the three veteran musicians filled the hall on each song, leaving no tune lacking.

Highly recommend. Couldn't have asked for anything more.

I followed his music for almost 50 years and was so excited to be able to hear him again and in a small intimate venue. The man and his music was as incredible last night as I could imagine. The experience was wonderful, breathtaking and unforgetable best of all my daughter was with me last night I hugged her tight and we swayed to "Teach your children well" Finally his two musicians with him were phenomenal beautiful, perfect harmony. So grateful to have witnessed this memoable event!

A hit parade of songs from Graham Nash from his days with The Hollies and Crosby Stills Nash & Young, as well as the best from his solo works. Some of my favorites during this two-hour show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre were “Bus Stop,” “Love The One You’re With,” “Immigration Man” and a surprise rendering of Buddy Holly’s “Everyday.” This is a quality show from start to finish! Nash may be in his seventies, but he’s still sounding great!

What a fantastic venue for such a gifted singer whose voice hasn't aged a day since his Crosby, Stills, and Nash days. He is very personable with the audience, recalling stories about Crosby and Young while also making pointed remarks about modern day American life.

I do have one slight critique, at times the guitar overshadowed Nash's voice. That was only in certain songs but it was still bothersome nonetheless. The show as a whole was well worth the money.

Concert was great!! The power went out in Santa Fe so Graham played acoustic only

Was a packed house and memorable evening!! The musician who accompanied was the bomb on guitar leads and old melodious lines from 70's 80's

Song list was long and interspersed with new material but mostly old. Graham talked briefly about al the good things happening despite our political social and economic upheaval!! A truely classic performer!!

A wonderful performance by a talented and ageless artist.

Nash had a superb backup band, two talented musicians. His voice is as clear as ever, his energy level high, and his humor is endearing. We loved his selection of songs, including many classics and favorites. The show surpassed our expectations. Bravo! May you stay forever young (to quote another legend).

Graham is always in a good mood and always bring it!! His voice is still sharp, warming and distinctive!

He did it all … from bus stop to wind on the water to cathedral and of course… Teach your Children . It was such a gift to see him and would never miss the opportunity

I rarely saw an artist putting so much emotion and sensibility in his songs.

His voice remained unchanged.

He was performing his songs as it was the first time he was singing them...with sincerety.

Congratulations as well to the great guitarist who was playing with him...Mr. Shane Fontayne.

David Nash has won the Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize 2024, supported by the Atlantic Philanthropies, the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast has announced.

Nash was announced as the winner for No Man’s Land , published by Dedalus Press, at the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast this evening. Nash was born in Co. Cork and lives between Ireland and Chile. A Spanish-language children’s book, Bajo Mis Pies, came out in 2020, as did two translations of books on the cultural history of Chile.

Nash said: “Seamus Heaney was the first poet of my life, in many ways, so to win a prize bearing his name is momentous to me both on a poetic and a personal level. I am extremely grateful to the Legacy Project, Queen’s and the Arts Council, and of course to the judges, for selecting my book and for seeing in it what I had hoped would be seen. It really means a great deal to me.”

This year’s judges were Prof Nick Laird, poet and Seamus Heaney Professor of Poetry at Queen’s; Jenny Browne, Professor of English and creative writing at Trinity University, Texas; and Stephen Sexton, poet and lecturer in poetry at the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s.

Laird said: “David Nash’s No Man’s Land is a book of return and renewal. Over and over the poems scrutinise modern Ireland with an insider’s easy familiarity and an outsider’s fresh perspective. Nash has technique in spades, a wry tone, an interest in formal ingenuity, and these poems set themselves ambitious aims which they invariably achieve.

The shortlist included Cowboy by Kandace Siobhan Walker (Cheerio Poetry); Crisis Actor by Declan Ryan (Faber); Before We Go Any Further by Tristram Fane Saunders (Carcanet); and Swimming Between Islands by Charlotte Eichler (Carcanet).

The Seamus Heaney Centre Poetry Prize is awarded annually to a writer whose first full collection has been published in the preceding year, by a UK or Ireland-based publisher. The winning writer receives £5,000.

Noel O'Regan

Novelist Noel O’Regan is the inaugural Literature Ireland writer-in-residence in Brno, Czech Republic as part of the CzechLit - Literature Ireland pilot residency exchange.

Sinéad Mac Aodha, director of Literature Ireland, said: “We are delighted to collaborate with our counterparts in CzechLit on this special writer exchange. We are confident that longer-term engagement with another culture through residency programmes result in better and deeper cultural experiences for the writers concerned, both in the making of new work and ultimately, also for their readers. Such residencies also provide an important opportunity for writers to meet with their counterparts and can generate further opportunities for literary exchange.”

O’Regan said: “I am excited to be provided with time to work on my writing, but also to experience the rich cultural life of Brno, which I will be visiting for the first time, and to engage with the broader Czech literary scene.”

O’Regan is from Co. Kerry. He is the recipient of a number of prizes, including an Arts Council Next Generation Award. His debut novel, Though the Bodies Fall , was shortlisted for Newcomer of the Year at the 2023 An Post Irish Book Awards, the 2024 James Tait Black Prize for Fiction and the John McGahern Prize for debut Irish fiction 2023.

The Czech edition of Though the Bodies Fall , Přitažlivost pádu , translated by the Ireland-based literary translator Alice Hyrmanová McElveen, was published by Odeon with the support of Literature Ireland.

O’Regan’s residency follows Czeck poet Marie Iljašenko’s residency in Cork in May. During her stay, Iljašenko worked on several new writing projects and was a guest at the Cork International Poetry Festival.

Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon is going to be broadcast as BBC Radio 4′s Book at Bedtime for the first two weeks of July.

Christodoulos Makris will be partnering with Poetry Ireland on two connected initiatives taking place this summer and autumn: He will be offering a guided tour (in person) of the exhibition Is this a poem? which he devised and curated at Museum of Literature Ireland until September 22nd; and will be leading a six-week (online) course entitled Poetry in the Contemporary World.

The Booker Prize winner, Indian author Arundhati Roy attends a journalists protest at a press club in New Delhi last October.

English PEN has announced that author Arundhati Roy has been awarded the PEN Pinter Prize 2024. She will receive the award in a ceremony co-hosted by the British Library on October 10th, where she will deliver an address. Tickets are now available to purchase here .

The prize will be shared with a Writer of Courage: a writer who is active in defence of freedom of expression, often at great risk to their own safety and liberty. The co-winner, selected by Arundhati Roy from a shortlist of cases supported by English PEN, will be announced at the event.

Roy was chosen by this year’s judges: Chair of English PEN, Ruth Borthwick; actor and activist Khalid Abdalla; and writer and musician Roger Robinson.

Abdalla commented: ‘Arundhati Roy is a luminous voice of freedom and justice whose words have come with fierce clarity and determination for almost thirty years now. Her books, her writings, the spirit with which her life is lived, have been a lodestar through the many crises and the darkness our world has faced since her first book, The God of Small Things . This year, as the world faces the deep histories that have created this moment in Gaza, our need for writers who are “unflinching and unswerving” has been immense. In honouring Arundhati Roy this year, we are celebrating both the dignity of her body of work and the timeliness of her words, that arrive with the depth of her craft exactly when we need them most.’

Roy said: ‘I am delighted to accept the PEN Pinter prize. I wish Harold Pinter were with us today to write about the almost incomprehensible turn the world is taking. Since he isn’t, some of us must do our utmost to try to fill his shoes.’

The John Hewitt Society, in partnership with Irish PEN/PEN na hÉireann, has announced that 20 aspiring writers have been chosen for ‘Freedom to Write’, the creative writing initiative made possible by a grant from the Shared Island Civic Society Fund, Department of Foreign Affairs, Dublin.

This unique creative writing course will include workshops and a seven-day residential bursary place at the ‘John Hewitt International Summer School of Literature and the Arts Festival’ in Armagh.

Dr Frank Ferguson, chair of the John Hewitt Society, and Catherine Dunne, chair of Irish PEN/PEN na hÉireann said: “We are delighted about this new partnership between the John Hewitt Society and Irish PEN/PEN na hÉireann. John Hewitt was a great supporter of Irish PEN in his lifetime and it is gratifying to continue the tradition that he established and work together to create new opportunities for the writers of tomorrow”.

The Gerard Manley Hopkins International Literary Festival will run from July 19th to 25th in Newbridge College Theatre, Co Kildare. Indian writer Sanjana Thakur has been announced as the overall winner of the world’s most global literature prize. The 26-year-old from Mumbai saw off 7,359 entrants worldwide to take the £5,000 prize.

The Commonwealth Foundation announced her win at an online ceremony, presented by New Zealand’s former Poet Laureate, Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh, in which Sanjana and the other four regional winners talk about their writing and read short extracts from their stories.

Taking its name from a famed Bollywood actress, Aishwarya Rai reimagines the traditional adoption story: a young woman, Avni, chooses between possible mothers housed in a local shelter. The first mother is too clean; the second, who looks like the real-life Aishwarya Rai, is too pretty. In her small Mumbai apartment with too-thin walls and a too-small balcony, Avni watches laundry turn round in her machine, dreams of stepping into white limousines, and tries out different mothers from the shelter.
