Here it is at last, the first 150-minute trailer. "Armageddon" is cut together like its own highlights. Take almost any 30 seconds at random, and you'd have a TV ad. The movie is an assault on the eyes, the ears, the brain, common sense and the human desire to be entertained. No matter what they're charging to get in, it's worth more to get out.

The plot covers many of the same bases as the recent " Deep Impact ," which, compared with "Armageddon," belongs on the American Film Institute list. The movie tells a similar story at fast-forward speed, with Bruce Willis as an oil driller who is recruited to lead two teams on an emergency shuttle mission to an asteroid "the size of Texas," which is about to crash into Earth and obliterate all life--"even viruses!" Their job: Drill an 800-foot hole and stuff a bomb into it, to blow up the asteroid before it kills us.

OK, say you do succeed in blowing up an asteroid the size of Texas. What if a piece the size of Dallas is left? Wouldn't that be big enough to destroy life on Earth? What about a piece the size of Austin? Let's face it: Even an object the size of that big Wal-Mart outside Abilene would pretty much clean us out, if you count the parking lot.

Texas is a big state, but as a celestial object, it wouldn't be able to generate much gravity. Yet when the astronauts get to the asteroid, they walk around on it as if the gravity is the same as on Earth. There's no sensation of weightlessness--until it's needed, that is, and then a lunar buggy flies across a jagged canyon, Evel Knievel-style.

The movie begins with a Charlton Heston narration telling us about the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. Then we get the masterful title card, "65 Million Years Later." The next scenes show an amateur astronomer spotting the object. We see top-level meetings at the Pentagon and in the White House. We meet Billy Bob Thornton , head of Mission Control in Houston, which apparently functions like a sports bar with a big screen for the fans, but no booze. Then we see ordinary people whose lives will be Changed Forever by the events to come. This stuff is all off the shelf--there's hardly an original idea in the movie.

"Armageddon" reportedly used the services of nine writers. Why did it need any? The dialogue is either shouted one-liners or romantic drivel. "It's gonna blow!" is used so many times, I wonder if every single writer used it once, and then sat back from his word processor with a contented smile on his face, another day's work done.

Disaster movies always have little vignettes of everyday life. The dumbest in "Armageddon" involves two Japanese tourists in a New York taxi. After meteors turn an entire street into a flaming wasteland, the woman complains, "I want to go shopping!" I hope in Japan that line is redubbed as "Nothing can save us but Gamera!" Meanwhile, we wade through a romantic subplot involving Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck . Liv plays Bruce Willis' daughter. Ben is Willis' best driller (now, now). Bruce finds Liv in Ben's bunk on an oil platform and chases Ben all over the rig, trying to shoot him. (You would think the crew would be preoccupied by the semi-destruction of Manhattan, but it's never mentioned after it happens.) Helicopters arrive to take Willis to the mainland so he can head up the mission to save mankind, etc., and he insists on using only crews from his own rig--especially Affleck, who is "like a son." That means Liv and Ben have a heart-rending parting scene. What is it about cinematographers and Liv Tyler? She is a beautiful young woman, but she's always being photographed while flat on her back, with her brassiere riding up around her chin and lots of wrinkles in her neck from trying to see what some guy is doing. (In this case, Affleck is tickling her navel with animal crackers.) Tyler is obviously a beneficiary of Take Your Daughter to Work Day. She's not only on the oil rig, but she attends training sessions with her dad and her boyfriend, hangs out in Mission Control and walks onto landing strips right next to guys wearing foil suits.

Characters in this movie actually say: "I wanted to say ... that I'm sorry," "We're not leaving them behind!," "Guys--the clock is ticking!" and "This has turned into a surrealistic nightmare!" Steve Buscemi , a crew member who is diagnosed with "space dementia," looks at the asteroid's surface and adds "This place is like Dr. Seuss' worst nightmare." Quick--which Seuss book is he thinking of? There are several Red Digital Readout scenes, in which bombs tick down to zero. Do bomb designers do that for the convenience of interested onlookers who happen to be standing next to a bomb? There's even a retread of the classic scene where they're trying to disconnect the timer, and they have to decide whether to cut the red wire or the blue wire. The movie has forgotten that *this is not a terrorist bomb,* but a standard-issue U.S. military bomb, being defused by a military guy who is on board specifically because he knows about this bomb. A guy like that, the first thing he should know is, red or blue? "Armageddon" is loud, ugly and fragmented. Action sequences are cut together at bewildering speed out of hundreds of short edits, so that we can't see for sure what's happening, or how, or why. Important special-effects shots (such as the asteroid) have a murkiness of detail, and the movie cuts away before we get a good look. The few "dramatic" scenes consist of the sonorous recitation of ancient cliches. Only near the end, when every second counts, does the movie slow down: Life on Earth is about to end, but the hero delays saving the planet in order to recite cornball farewell platitudes.

Staggering into the silence of the theater lobby after the ordeal was over, I found a big poster that was fresh off the presses with the quotes of junket blurbsters. "It will obliterate your senses!" reports David Gillin, who obviously writes autobiographically. "It will suck the air right out of your lungs!" vows Diane Kaminsky.

If it does, consider it a mercy killing.

Weather | father’s day in orlando: events, deals and ways to celebrate dad, subscriber only, weather | south florida still at risk for flooding friday after days of continuous storms.

Oscar Trejo tries to secure a car after the driver drove into a canal on SW 4th Avenue and SW 9th Street in Hallandale Beach on Thursday, June 13, 2024. The driver of the vehicle was able to get out of the car safely. She was driving down a flooded street, and said that she followed the directions from her GPS, and turned into the canal. Trejo lives across the street, and grabbed his boat to try and help out. (Mike Stocker/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

Wednesday brought torrential rains and severe flooding to the region, followed by another round of storms through Thursday. Up to 12 inches more of rain was expected overnight in the Fort Lauderdale area, likely to quickly cause even more flooding in places that were soaked Wednesday.

A frontal boundary stationed near parts of central and southwest Florida gradually made its way south all Thursday. While there was a lull in storms Thursday evening, another round of heavy rain and flooding is still possible through Friday, with possibly 2 to 4 more inches of rain, the National Weather Service Miami said.

Though flash flood warnings that were in effect for Broward County and northern Miami-Dade County expired at 8 p.m. Thursday, a flood watch will stay in place until Friday night.

Officials emphasized that any further flooding could occur in very short notice because the ground is already saturated and urged people to avoid venturing out.

“The break in the rain this morning and afternoon allowed for more room in the groundwater table, increasing the capacity for additional rainfall,” Fort Lauderdale District 1 Commissioner John C. Herbst said in an email Thursday night. “Still, residents should stay vigilant as rain continues through the evening. Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.”

Before the Thursday’s round of storms rolled in, Hallandale Beach and Hollywood both recorded over 19 inches of rain since Tuesday with Davie recording nearly 18 inches. Highest amounts were recorded in Collier County — over 25 inches in 48 hours, according to the National Weather Service Miami.

In Wednesday’s hard-hit cities , including Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, and Dania Beach, crews worked to pump water, and even some residents helped to de-clog drains along flooded streets before the rain began again. Many drains remained clogged Thursday following Wednesday’s storms, officials say. Meanwhile, tow trucks have continued to work since Wednesday to remove dozens of cars from the roads.

Hollywood requested five more pumps from the state to try to help with the flooding in low-lying areas in addition to the ones already deployed. Five pumps were stationed in the area of Johnson Street and the Interstate 95 overpass alone, one of the most affected parts in the city.

Buildings were also affected. Hallandale Beach shut down its City Hall because of flooding as of 2:30 p.m., Mayor Joy Cooper wrote on Facebook .

“This will allow for residents currently at City Hall to conclude their business and hopefully make it home safely,” she said.

In Miramar, several homes were flooded with up to 8 inches of water, city officials said. Spokesperson Joann Hussey said there was evidence that water entered homes in Hollywood as well.

Some residents also reported flooding in their homes in Dania Beach and Fort Lauderdale, though largely not to the same extent as April 2023.

City officials said it’s too early to know how many homes have been damaged so far.

In Wilton Manors, resident Boyd Corbin reported seeing sewage bubbling out of manhole covers in the street.

Broward County Transit’s 415-bus system continues to operate. But it has created detours on routes experiencing severe flooding. The affected areas include the Aventura Mall neighborhood and routes serving Hallandale Beach.  The Davie and Hallandale Beach Community Shuttle services were suspended Thursday. The Paratransit (TOPS) service is operating normally, although its shuttles may experience delays and wait times will be longer when clients telephone the call center.

South Florida’s passenger rail services had returned to close to normal earlier in the day, but air travelers continued to suffer protracted delays and large numbers of flight cancellations as heavy rains again hindered the region’s transportation system.

Brightline, the high-speed rail service, started the day with a modified schedule after floodwaters made a mile-long stretch of tracks between Aventura and Miami impassable late Wednesday along the Florida East Coast Railway corridor.

Tri-Rail, the three-county commuter service that runs west of I-95 through Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, reopened its connection to MiamiCentral station in downtown Miami.

But it was another day of inconveniences and frustration at South Florida’s three international airports as passengers again faced hours-long waits triggered by bad weather.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport advised passengers to check with their airlines for flight status updates before leaving for their air terminals.

“Our terminal & airport exit roadways are clear, but a section of E, Perimeter Rd. into #FLL is closed due to flooding; use alternate routes,” the airport declared on its X account.

As of Thursday evening, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood had over 200 delays and over 140 cancellations, Miami International had over 300 delays and over 300 cancellations, while Palm Beach International had nominal numbers of delays and canceled flights, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware.

Port Everglades said it has remained open for business during the bad weather even though some of its roads flooded. Cars and trucks on Wednesday were able to travel through the port, said spokeswoman Joy Oglesby.

“We are operating as normal today,” she said.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

Everyone Says I’m Running Away

Running Away? I think not!

My dad always asks what I’m running away from with my travels. A commenter told me to stop running away from my problems and to start living life. “Grow up,” he said.

And, years ago, there was a blog called “Mom says I’m running away.”

I’m not sure why, but there is this perception out there that anyone who travels long term and isn’t interested in settling down or getting a conventional job must be running away from something . They are just trying to “escape life.”

They are running away from responsibility, being a grown-up, heartache, problems, etc, etc.

Long-term travelers are all just Peter Pans refusing to be “adults.”

While society thinks traveling is something everyone should do at one point, it’s only gap years after college or short vacations that are acceptable. Get it out of your system and come back into the Matrix.

Those of us who lead nomadic lifestyles, or who linger just a bit too long somewhere before reaching that final homestretch, are all too often accused of running away.

Yes, go travel — but just not for too long the world says. Responsible people don’t just travel forever.

We nomads must have awful, miserable lives, or are weird, or have had something traumatic happen to us that we are trying to escape. People assume that we are simply running away from our problems, running away from “the real world.”

To all those people, I say – you are right.

I am running away.

I’m running away from your idea of the “real” world.

I’m avoiding your life.

Instead, I’m running towards everything — towards the world , exotic places, new people, different cultures, and my own idea of freedom .

While there may be exceptions (as there are with everything), most people who become nomads do so because they want to experience the world, not escape problems. We are running away from office life, commutes, and weekend errands, and the corporate 9 to 5. We’re running away from the strict path society has laid out as “normal.” The one that makes us mindless ants marching to and fro.

We (I) want to experience every culture, see every mountain, eat weird food, attend crazy festivals , meet new people , and enjoy different holidays around the world.

Life is short and we only get to live it once. I want to look back and say I did exciting things and lived life on my own terms, not say I spent my life reading blogs like this during my lunch break while wishing I was doing the same thing.

No one dies going “If only I had spent more time in the office!”

As an American, my perspective might be different. In my country , the accepted path is long and narrow: you go to college, get a job, get married, buy a house, have your 2.5 children, raise them, and then retire. Only then, after you’ve put in your time, can you enjoy the fruits of your labor. Society boxes you in and restricts your movements to their expectations.

And any deviation is considered abnormal and weird.

People may want to travel, tell you they envy what you do, and say they wish they could do the same thing. But they never do . Few people muster the courage to take the leap , no matter how much their heart pulls them. They are simply fascinated by a lifestyle so outside the norm.

While social media, the rise of digital nomading , and websites like this have made quitting your job to travel the world or teach English in Thailand a little more acceptable, the general attitude is still “follow the path if you want to be normal.”

Well, I don’t want to be normal.

I feel like the reason why people tell us we are running away is that they can’t fathom the fact that we broke the mold and are living outside the norm. To want to break all of society’s conventions, there simply must be something wrong with us.

Years ago, a book called “ The Secret ” came out. According to “ The Secret ,” if you just wish for and want something badly enough, you’ll get it. But the real secret to life is that you get what you want when you do what you want.

Life is what you make it out to be. Life is yours to create. We are all chained down by the burdens we place upon ourselves, whether they are bills, errands, or, like me, self-imposed blogging deadlines . If you really want something, you have to go after it .

People who travel the world aren’t running away from life. Just the opposite. Those that break the mold, explore the world , and live on their own terms are running toward true living, in my opinion. We have a degree of freedom a lot of people will never experience. We get to be the captains of our ships.

But it is a freedom we chose to have.

We looked around and said, “ I want something different .”

And then we went for it.

It was that freedom and attitude I saw in travelers years ago in Thailand that inspired me to do lead the life I am now. I saw them break the mold and I thought to myself, “Why not me?”

I’m not running away.

I, like so many others before, am just running towards my own idea of a normal life.

And I never plan to look back.

Opinion | A second strike for untouchable California pensions?

CalPERS headquarters is seen in Sacramento in 2009.

Even though no Legislature ever approved the idea of permanent, inviolate, untouchable pensions for government workers, the “ California rule ” which arose out of various court cases provides just such protections. The rule holds that pension benefits and how they accrue cannot be changed by government agencies unless workers get a similar increase in other compensation — even for years of service not yet worked. This interpretation and generous benefits have hammered local governments , which are starting to spend 20 percent or more of their revenue on pensions, leading to reductions in law enforcement, community programs and library hours.

This isn’t how government is supposed to work. In 2011, law professor Amy Monahan published a 56-page analysis that looked at nearly 90 years of court cases through which the California rule came to pass and found no evidence of any legislative intent to create such a hard and fast rule. Courts which interpret laws in ways that create new obligations are required to demonstrate such intent.

This matters, according to two panels of state appellate court judges in Northern California. On Dec. 30, three judges unanimously rejected a fire union’s challenge to a 2012 state pension reform law that reversed a 2003 state law that allowed employees to buy up to five years of credit for years employed in the calculation of their pensions. Justice Martin Jenkins, the lead author, said there was no evidence that the 2003 legislation had the intention of creating a permanent pension benefit.

Jenkins cited the other unanimous appellate court ruling from last August in which lead author Justice James Richman found no evidence of any legislative intent to give public employees “an immutable entitlement to the most optimal formula of calculating the pension.” The case involved a legal challenge by some Marin County public employes to provisions of the 2012 reform law barring late-career pension spiking. The opinion held that pension terms could be changed for years not worked.

The California Supreme Court has already agreed to hear an appeal of the Marin County case and may well consolidate it with the fire union case. This prospect is welcome because the people of California need clarity on what is legal and what is not.

Instead of relying on dubious precedents, Californians would be best served if the state high court relies on its 1977 ruling in the Miller v. California case , which held “pension rights are not immutable,” that local governments “may make reasonable modifications and changes” and that “the employee does not have a right to any fixed or definite benefits but only to a substantial or reasonable pension.”

If something cannot go on forever, it will stop. Inflexible pension obligations that incapacitate local governments should not go on forever.

A Path Forward: Diversity, equity and inclusion efforts imperfect, but necessary

By any objective standard, the southern coast of San Diego County is enduring a long-running environmental nightmare. 7 Reasons to Adopt a Senior Dog, and Give Them a Forever Home

T hese days, shelters are often overwhelmed with abandoned pets. In 2023, France was in the headlines for an abundance of this very issue — but unfortunately, it’s a common occurrence in many parts of the world. And while there are plenty of kindhearted humans willing to go the adopt, don’t shop route , most people want a puppy to bring home. It makes sense. It’s hard to resist these cute bundles of fluffy energy.

Although not as obvious, older mutts have just as much to offer. Yet, sadly, they are often passed over in favor of their younger counterparts. It's time to change the narrative, and follow the example of this New Yorker . These are just a handful of the many benefits of adopting a senior dog . Fair warning: you may just find yourself at the shelter before the day is out.

1. Senior dogs have already been housebroken.

If you've ever been a pet parent to a puppy , you’ll know the “joys” of waking up to a smelly mess on the floor or coming home to chewed-up furniture. When you adopt a dog who's older, you can skip the potty training phase and enjoy a clean and well-behaved furry friend from day one.

2. They usually have a calmer temperament.

Older dogs have usually outgrown their puppy stage and tend to be calmer and more relaxed. However, this does depend on the breed. Jack Russells, for example, tend to be full of energy regardless of age. Adult dogs generally have established personality traits, making it easier to find a perfect match for your lifestyle. The website How I Met My Dog has a great guide for potential adopters that’s worth checking out.

3. Older pups often require less training and socializing.

Older pups often have prior training and can be well-behaved, saving you from the time-consuming process of training a younger dog . You’ll often find they’ve already learned basic commands and manners, making the transition into your home much smoother. Also, when you adopt an older dog, they're often already socialized and comfortable around people and other animals.

4. Pooches with a few miles on their pads generally have lower energy levels.

Senior pooches generally have lower energy levels, making them a great choice for retirees or people with a more relaxed lifestyle. If you're not up for long, challenging walks or intense play sessions, an older dog may be worth considering. They still enjoy gentle exercise and outdoor activities, but they likely won't require the same level of physical activity as a younger dog.

5. They need unconditional love (and give it back in buckets).

A dog that's older can make an incredible addition to your family, offering loyalty, companionship, and unconditional love in return for a safe and loving home. These OGs (older guys and gals) thrive on one-on-one attention. If you have the time and space in your life, it can be incredibly rewarding to be on the giving (and receiving) end of a relationship like this.

6. Adopting a senior dog gives them a second chance at life.

Many older dogs find themselves in shelters due to unforeseen circumstances like their human passing away or no longer being able to care for them. By offering a shelter dog a forever home , you allow them to experience love, happiness, and companionship in their twilight years.

7. Older dogs can be just as much fun as puppies.

Older dogs might have a few more years under their belts, but they can still have the capacity for love, laughter, and adventure. Whether it's going for leisurely walks , snuggling up on the couch, or exploring new places together, older dogs can bring a lot of fun to your life.

These are just a few of the happy benefits of offering an older pooch a home. Each animal has their unique qualities and charms, so consider adopting a more mature dog and experience the joy that comes with giving them a forever home.

Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass was a formerly enslaved man who became a prominent activist, author and public speaker. He became a leader in the abolitionist movement , which sought to end the practice of slavery, before and during the Civil War . After that conflict and the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862, he continued to push for equality and human rights until his death in 1895.

Douglass’ 1845 autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave , described his time as an enslaved worker in Maryland . It was one of three autobiographies he penned, along with dozens of noteworthy speeches, despite receiving minimal formal education.

An advocate for women’s rights, and specifically the right of women to vote , Douglass’ legacy as an author and leader lives on. His work served as an inspiration to the civil rights movement of the 1960s and beyond.

Who Was Frederick Douglass?

Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in or around 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland. Douglass himself was never sure of his exact birth date.

His mother was an enslaved Black women and his father was white and of European descent. He was actually born Frederick Bailey (his mother’s name), and took the name Douglass only after he escaped. His full name at birth was “Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey.”

After he was separated from his mother as an infant, Douglass lived for a time with his maternal grandmother, Betty Bailey. However, at the age of six, he was moved away from her to live and work on the Wye House plantation in Maryland.

From there, Douglass was “given” to Lucretia Auld, whose husband, Thomas, sent him to work with his brother Hugh in Baltimore. Douglass credits Hugh’s wife Sophia with first teaching him the alphabet. With that foundation, Douglass then taught himself to read and write. By the time he was hired out to work under William Freeland, he was teaching other enslaved people to read using the Bible .

As word spread of his efforts to educate fellow enslaved people, Thomas Auld took him back and transferred him to Edward Covey, a farmer who was known for his brutal treatment of the enslaved people in his charge. Roughly 16 at this time, Douglass was regularly whipped by Covey.

Frederick Douglass Escapes from Slavery

After several failed attempts at escape, Douglass finally left Covey’s farm in 1838, first boarding a train to Havre de Grace, Maryland. From there he traveled through Delaware , another slave state, before arriving in New York and the safe house of abolitionist David Ruggles.

Once settled in New York, he sent for Anna Murray, a free Black woman from Baltimore he met while in captivity with the Aulds. She joined him, and the two were married in September 1838. They had five children together.

From Slavery to Abolitionist Leader

After their marriage, the young couple moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts , where they met Nathan and Mary Johnson, a married couple who were born “free persons of color.” It was the Johnsons who inspired the couple to take the surname Douglass, after the character in the Sir Walter Scott poem, “The Lady of the Lake.”

In New Bedford, Douglass began attending meetings of the abolitionist movement . During these meetings, he was exposed to the writings of abolitionist and journalist William Lloyd Garrison.

The two men eventually met when both were asked to speak at an abolitionist meeting, during which Douglass shared his story of slavery and escape. It was Garrison who encouraged Douglass to become a speaker and leader in the abolitionist movement.

By 1843, Douglass had become part of the American Anti-Slavery Society’s “Hundred Conventions” project, a six-month tour through the United States. Douglass was physically assaulted several times during the tour by those opposed to the abolitionist movement.

In one particularly brutal attack, in Pendleton, Indiana , Douglass’ hand was broken. The injuries never fully healed, and he never regained full use of his hand.

In 1858, radical abolitionist John Brown stayed with Frederick Douglass in Rochester, New York, as he planned his raid on the U.S. military arsenal at Harper’s Ferry , part of his attempt to establish a stronghold of formerly enslaved people in the mountains of Maryland and Virginia. Brown was caught and hanged for masterminding the attack, offering the following prophetic words as his final statement: “I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.”

'Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass'

Two years later, Douglass published the first and most famous of his autobiographies, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave . (He also authored My Bondage and My Freedom and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass).

In it Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass , he wrote: “From my earliest recollection, I date the entertainment of a deep conviction that slavery would not always be able to hold me within its foul embrace; and in the darkest hours of my career in slavery, this living word of faith and spirit of hope departed not from me, but remained like ministering angels to cheer me through the gloom.”

He also noted, “Thus is slavery the enemy of both the slave and the slaveholder.”

Frederick Douglass in Ireland and Great Britain

Later that same year, Douglass would travel to Ireland and Great Britain. At the time, the former country was just entering the early stages of the Irish Potato Famine , or the Great Hunger.

While overseas, he was impressed by the relative freedom he had as a man of color, compared to what he had experienced in the United States. During his time in Ireland, he met the Irish nationalist Daniel O’Connell , who became an inspiration for his later work.

In England, Douglass also delivered what would later be viewed as one of his most famous speeches, the so-called “London Reception Speech.”

In the speech, he said, “What is to be thought of a nation boasting of its liberty, boasting of its humanity, boasting of its Christianity , boasting of its love of justice and purity, and yet having within its own borders three millions of persons denied by law the right of marriage?… I need not lift up the veil by giving you any experience of my own. Every one that can put two ideas together, must see the most fearful results from such a state of things…”

Frederick Douglass’ Abolitionist Paper

When he returned to the United States in 1847, Douglass began publishing his own abolitionist newsletter, the North Star . He also became involved in the movement for women’s rights .

He was the only African American to attend the Seneca Falls Convention , a gathering of women’s rights activists in New York, in 1848.

He spoke forcefully during the meeting and said, “In this denial of the right to participate in government, not merely the degradation of woman and the perpetuation of a great injustice happens, but the maiming and repudiation of one-half of the moral and intellectual power of the government of the world.”

He later included coverage of women’s rights issues in the pages of the North Star . The newsletter’s name was changed to Frederick Douglass’ Paper in 1851, and was published until 1860, just before the start of the Civil War .

Frederick Douglass Quotes

In 1852, he delivered another of his more famous speeches, one that later came to be called “What to a slave is the 4th of July?”

In one section of the speech, Douglass noted, “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade, and solemnity, are, to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy—a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages.”

For the 24th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation , in 1886, Douglass delivered a rousing address in Washington, D.C., during which he said, “where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.”

Frederick Douglass During the Civil War

During the brutal conflict that divided the still-young United States, Douglass continued to speak and worked tirelessly for the end of slavery and the right of newly freed Black Americans to vote.

Although he supported President Abraham Lincoln in the early years of the Civil War, Douglass fell into disagreement with the politician after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which effectively ended the practice of slavery. Douglass was disappointed that Lincoln didn’t use the proclamation to grant formerly enslaved people the right to vote, particularly after they had fought bravely alongside soldiers for the Union army.

It is said, though, that Douglass and Lincoln later reconciled and, following Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, and the passage of the 13th amendment , 14th amendment , and 15th amendment to the U.S. Constitution (which, respectively, outlawed slavery, granted formerly enslaved people citizenship and equal protection under the law, and protected all citizens from racial discrimination in voting), Douglass was asked to speak at the dedication of the Emancipation Memorial in Washington, D.C.’s Lincoln Park in 1876.

Historians, in fact, suggest that Lincoln’s widow, Mary Todd Lincoln , bequeathed the late-president’s favorite walking stick to Douglass after that speech.

In the post-war Reconstruction era, Douglass served in many official positions in government, including as an ambassador to the Dominican Republic, thereby becoming the first Black man to hold high office. He also continued speaking and advocating for African American and women’s rights.

In the 1868 presidential election, he supported the candidacy of former Union general Ulysses S. Grant , who promised to take a hard line against white supremacist-led insurgencies in the post-war South. Grant notably also oversaw passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1871 , which was designed to suppress the growing Ku Klux Klan movement.

Frederick Douglass: Later Life and Death

In 1877, Douglass met with Thomas Auld , the man who once “owned” him, and the two reportedly reconciled.

Douglass’ wife Anna died in 1882, and he married white activist Helen Pitts in 1884.

In 1888, he became the first African American to receive a vote for President of the United States, during the Republican National Convention. Ultimately, though, Benjamin Harrison received the party nomination.

Douglass remained an active speaker, writer and activist until his death in 1895. He died after suffering a heart attack at home after arriving back from a meeting of the National Council of Women , a women’s rights group still in its infancy at the time, in Washington, D.C.

His life’s work still serves as an inspiration to those who seek equality and a more just society.
