Los Tres Ojos National Park is a hidden gem located in the heart of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Los Tres Ojos

Santo Domingo

Consisting of three humid caverns with dark blue lagoons connected by stalactite-filled passages, this site is lovely if you show up early to beat the crowds. Upon entrance, a long stairway takes visitors down a narrow tunnel in the rock, and a cement path at the bottom leads through the caves. At the third ojo, a small boat can be hired for RD$20 to visit a fourth ojo, which is actually a gorgeous lake beneath open sky, filled with fish.

On certain days, a man whom locals refer to as 'cave tarzan' accepts tips for climbing the cave wall and plunging 6m into the water. Visitors, however, are not allowed to swim. On the way out, vendors aggressively hawk their services and wares – if you’re not interested, say a firm 'no, gracias ' and keep walking.

Los Tres Ojos National Park

Los Tres Ojos National Park is a cave that has a freshwater lake, naturally divided into three lakes that can only be seen from the inside and a single lake that can be seen without having to be inside. Located in the Santo Domingo Este municipality in the Dominican Republic.

The name of the park derives from the eye shape that can be seen in the three interior lakes. It should be noted that there is only one lake that can be seen from the outside. It was discovered in 1916. It is believed that the cave was frequented by ancient aborigines of La Spanish.

Among the interesting things that the complex has are four primary lakes, which are:

Aguas Azufradas Lake: It is four meters deep and a whitish component can be seen at its bottom that was thought to be sulfur, hence the name of the lake, but later it was discovered that it was calcium and other minerals.

La Nevera Lake: It is 5.4 meters deep; It is the coldest of the three, since sunlight does not reach it. The most interesting thing is that its temperature varies between 15 and 21 ºC.

Lago de las Damas: 2.5 meters deep in the deepest area. Formerly used as a spa for women and children, it is a sanctuary that keeps many interesting stories.

Los Zaramagullones Lake: The curious name given to the lake is due to some native ducks in the area. At 6.1 meters deep, the beautiful lake is surrounded by exuberant vegetation, since it is the only cavity that is found in the open air.

Within this ecological paradise you can take boat tours inside the caves, you will be able to see that some caves communicate with others and will allow you to contemplate on the walls the curious drawings of the ancient Tainos.

The entire route that is made is interesting and we must be attentive to the petroglyphs and handmade ceramic items, these discoveries being unique wonders that you can only appreciate in this beautiful place.

Los tres ojos: three jewel toned lakes of the dominican republic.

Los Tres Ojos is a trio of vibrant green and blue lakes connected to a cave system tucked away in a dense forest in the Dominican Republic. Ojos is Spanish for eyes. Due to the high mineral and bacteria content in the water, the lakes often take on the same brilliant blue and green tones of human eyes. Visitors flock to Los Tres Ojos to gaze into colorful pools of water so vivid that they appear as though they have the ability to gaze back.

The caves of Los Tres Ojos feature winding staircases that offer a variety of vantage points to view the colossal caverns. Los Tres Ojos was considered a sacred space by the Taino Indians. The Taino used the caves for important religious ceremonies. The Taino also believed that the waters of Los Tres Ojos could increase fertility. Bats, fish, and turtles live a content existence in the caverns of Los Tres Ojos.

The Lago de Azufre is one of three sinkholes at Parque Los Tres Ojos in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Taino Indians once used the caves as a refuge.

There is an unofficial fourth eye called Los Zaramagullones with an outside opening that can be reached by a small ferry pulled by ropes. In the early 1900s, European explorers thought that the waters of Los Tres Ojos had to contain sulfur, due to the bright blue color. Over time, the explorers realized that calcium deposits were responsible for the sapphire colored water. Los Tres Ojos offers a relaxing escape from the bustling streets of Santo Domingo.

Los Tres Ojos is all the proof that you will need that the Dominican Republic is a true island paradise. A few hours wandering the pathways of Los Tres Ojos surrounded by dazzling pools of water that early residents of Hispaniola thought had sacred properties is sure to leave you feeling revived and refreshed. Located in the East Viewpoint Park in East Santo Domingo , it is a cavern made up of a large freshwater lagoon which was divided thousand of years ago due to a natural phenomenon and ended up originating four beautiful and unique interconnected pools.

Its name comes from the eye-shape of the three interior lakes , while from the outside you can only see a single lake.

Discovered in 1916, it is believed that the cave was frequented by ancient aboriginals from La Española.

The four main lakes are:

- Sulfur Waters : it is four meters depth; its bottom has a whitish component thought to be sulfur (from where its name comes), but later on, they discovered it was made of calcium and other minerals.

- The Fridge : is 5.4 meters depth and the coolest one. Its temperature varies from 15 to 21ºC, since it doesn’t receive sun light.

- The Ladies Lake : it is 2.5 meters depth in its deepest side and it was formerly used as a spa for women and children.

- Los Zaramagullones : Its curious name comes from the autochthonous ducks from the area. Being 6.1 meters depth, this beautiful lake is surrounded by lush vegetation, as it is the only pool in the open air.

Tours by boat can be made on the interior of the Cave, since the pools are interconnected. Here, you’ll have the chance to see curious drawings on the walls made by ancient Taíno people.
