Elvis, an American Trilogy

Food & Drink

Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, a new elvis musical is touring australia to get you all shook up (again) about the king of rock 'n' roll.

'Elvis: A Musical Revolution' will feature more than 40 of the singer's hits, and tell his tale from his childhood through to the '68 Comeback Special'.

A New Elvis Musical Is Touring Australia to Get You All Shook Up (Again) About the King of Rock 'n' Roll

If you're just a hunk, a hunk of burning love for the one and only Elvis Presley, and you live in Australia, you've been having quite the year or so. For four months in 2022, a massive exhibition dedicated to the king of rock 'n' roll hit Bendigo . Since June, Baz Luhrmann 's AACTA-winning and Oscar-nominated biopic Elvis has been wowing fans at festivals , then in cinemas , then also at home . And now, when the middle of 2023 hits, a new Presley-focused stage musical will start doing the rounds across the country.

Called Elvis: A Musical Revolution , this brand-new production will feature more than 40 of the singer's hits, because there's just that many songs to include. Expect all of the favourites to be worked into the biographical musical, which means everything from 'Jailhouse Rock', 'Hound Dog', 'That's All Right' and 'All Shook Up' through to 'Suspicious Minds', 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Burning Love' and 'Blue Suede Shoes'. 'Good Rockin' Tonight', 'Earth Angel', 'Don't Be Cruel' and 'Are You Lonesome' are also set to get a whirl as well, as are 'Blue Moon of Kentucky', 'See See Rider', 'Can't Help Falling in Love' and 'A Little Less Conversation'.

That's what you'll be hearing. As for what you'll be seeing — what'll make the musical one for the money, naturally — the show's action will tell Elvis' tale from his childhood in Tupelo, Mississippi through to his triumphant '68 Comeback Special . If you've seen the aforementioned Elvis , none of it will be new news, but expect Elvis: A Musical Revolution to work its hip-swinging magic anyway.

Exact dates haven't yet been revealed, or a full list of cities that'll get this musical in their buildings. But the show will get started at Sydney's State Theatre in July, and also head to Melbourne's Athenaeum Theatre from September. Cross your fingers for more stops afterwards.

The cast hasn't been unveiled yet either, with a national talent search set to be held to find the right actor to slip into the blue suede shoes. Yes, following up Austin Butler's Oscar-nominated efforts will be a huge task.

Elvis: A Musical Revolution hails from David Venn Enterprises, which has also been behind Cruel Intentions: The '90s Musical , The Wedding Singer  and  Bring It On: The Musical  — and arrives via a partnership with Authentic Brands Group, the owner of Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Also behind the scenes, the musical's book comes courtesy of David Abbinanti and Sean Cercone — who have Saturday Night Fever: The Musical and Ghost: The Musical on their resumes — with Abbinanti also composing the orchestrations, arrangements, and additional musical and lyrics.

"We are honoured to be tackling one of the world's greatest icons through a Broadway musical. Elvis' life is such fervent ground for this medium from his epic concerts to his unprecedented meteoric rise to fame. There was no roadmap, no guide, and no limit on what could be created. His journey, from dirt-poor shotgun shack Tupelo, Mississippi to a singular name, Elvis has fascinated generations and we're excited to have him tell it in his own way," said Abbinanti and Cercone.

Following its world premiere at the State Theatre, NSW and Athenaeum Theatre, VIC earlier this year, receiving thunderous applause and standing ovations. The new musical authorised by Elvis Presley Enterprises is a must see for all Elvis fans and theatre lovers!

The smash hit show now makes its way back to Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre from 27 July – 11 August .

★★★★ “ELVIS IS KING IN THIS ROCK N’ ROLL FEVER DREAM OF A JUKEBOX MUSICAL” THE AGE

The story of cultural icon and award winning musician, Elvis Presley, is told by an outstanding Australian cast, through dazzling choreography and with over 40 of Presley’s iconic hits! His legacy preserved in a musical theatre extravaganza.

Elvis: A Musical Revolution

★★★★1/2 “MOVING, MEMORABLE, MAGNIFICENT” SYDNEY SCOOP

Since news broke that a new authorised Elvis Presley production would be coming to Australian theatres, the question on everyone’s lips was, of course, who will play the musical legend? Out of the over 700 people who auditioned, who has the flair, the grit, the magnitude of talent to play one of the world’s most multifaceted and adored icons? Enter Tasmania born actor, singer, dancer, stage and screen heartthrob, Rob Mallett .

We had the pleasure of asking Mallett a few questions ahead of the shows debut, and he delivered some great insights into how he plans to fill those big old blue suede shoes and what’s in store for audiences.

What inspired you to audition to play Elvis in this new production? I grew up knowing Elvis almost more as a mythological character than a real human being so there was an appeal as an actor to dive into what the man behind the myth must have gone through. Roles like this don’t come around too often and when I started working on the material, it was a natural fit.

What were you doing when you found out you got the part? How did you feel? When my agent called I was halfway through my morning workout so I sent it to voicemail. I called him back and he pretended he was calling about some other mundane admin issue before he just casually dropped it in mid conversation. It was a great day for both of us.

Elvis is a complex character to play. What have you been doing to prepare to step into the role? Since learning I got the role, my days have been saturated with all things Elvis. Watching his movies, listening to old interviews, working with a dialect coach, a singing teacher, guitar teacher, and working on the script. Doing everything I can to pay homage to such a legend especially for the huge fan base that continues to support his legacy.

Do you, Rob Mallett, have anything in common with Elvis Presley? If so, what? Well, we’re both born in January and have made a living out of singing. If only I could include private jets and sprawling mansions to that list…

Out of the many beloved Elvis songs audiences will hear – which song are you the most excited to perform? I am really looking forward to singing Can’t Help Falling In Love every night. The song holds a special place in my heart as a close friend sang it at my wedding and I know it will be a beautiful lullaby for when our baby arrives. I have also been using it as a daily warmup before practicing Elvis material because it just has that quintessential Elvis sound.

Elvis: A Musical Revolution is a brand new, never-before seen production. How does it feel to be involved in a musical that is completely fresh with a relatively blank canvas? It’s a rare privilege for an Australian company to get to originate a show like we get to with ‘Elvis’. The book has some really lovely moments which I’m excited to flesh out with the other actors in rehearsals. It allows us the freedom to put our own stamp on it as opposed to repeating what a host of other performers have done before us.

You have an impressive resume! How is this role different to other roles you’ve played and is it more or less challenging to play a real-life character? I think, on balance, it’s slightly harder to tackle a character that’s based on a real-life person. Taking on a real-life character means you are confined to tighter boundaries to play within. It’s our job as actors to bring elements of ourselves to a character to make it authentic and interesting but with a real-life character, especially one as famous as Elvis, there are very clear goalposts and expectations to meet.

Do you have any pre-show rituals? What are they? While I don’t have anything too superstitious, everything I do in my day before the show is to put me in the best position for that performance. Whether it’s the amount of sleep I get, what I eat, when I eat, how much exercise I do; too much and I’m fatigued, too little and I’m under energised and lethargic… It’s all done by design to situate me for a good show.

Tickets are already flying, but tell us, why do you think people should come see Elvis: A Musical Revolution? There is a reason Elvis’ story has gained so much interest, having had such a colourful life, and the music speaks for itself. This show has over 40 of his iconic songs like Burning Love, Suspicious Minds and Can’t Help Falling in Love. I think audiences will love hearing this incredible catalogue of music but they’ll also enjoy watching his story being told live on stage, the story of a humble man who achieved incredible things.

★★★★ “ROB MALLET SHINES AS THE KING OF ROCK ‘N ROLL” THEATRE THOUGHTS

Produced by David Venn Enterprises, Elvis: A Musical Revolution is being brought to life by an excellent creative team of artistic, musical and theatrical masterminds including writers Sean Cercone and David Abbinanti , director Alister Smith , choreographer Michael Ralph and music director Daniel Puckey .

United with an all Australian cast including Noni McCallum as Gladys Presley, Ian Stenlake as Colonel Parker, Annie Chiswell as Pricsilla Presley and Kirby Burgess as Ann-Margaret. Four impressive young men, Oliver Bosward , Rhys James Hankey , Finn Walsham and Tommy Kent , will share the role of young Elvis Presley throughout the duration of the production.

Elvis History Blog

Elvis’ gold cadillac tour of australia in 1968-69.

Despite repeated pledges that he would, Elvis Presley never performed outside of North America. In spite of that, today he has a more fervent following in some foreign countries than he does in his native land. The best Presley fan magazines have long since been, and still are, published in European countries (e.g. Elvis: the Man and His Music ). In fact, with the recent foreign purchase of Elvis: The Magazine, I know of no quality Elvis-themed magazine published in the U.S. The same goes for web sites. Most of the best sources on the net for information about Elvis originate in Europe or Australia (e.g. ElvisInfoNet ).

I’ve often wondered how loyalty could continue to thrive overseas for an entertainer whose only exposure there was on vinyl, celluloid, and radio waves. Sure, there are plenty of American Elvis fans still around, but a great many of them seem fixated on Presley teddy bears, snow globes, and other doodads and trinkets. Overseas there appears to be a greater focus on Elvis’ career and his place in entertainment history.

A good example of this historical emphasis on Elvis is abroad is Australian Bob Hayden’s book, Elvis Presley’s Gold Cadillac: Tour of Australasia 1968-69. It’s the kind of Elvis-themed project that would never come out of U.S.-based Presley fandom.

In a 56-page, 8” X 11 ¾” formatted booklet, Bob chronicled the year-long tour of an Elvis limousine across southern and eastern Australia, mostly in 1968. Even though Elvis was half a world away in the U.S. during his Cadillac’s tour, the story still reveals much about him through his Australian fans, who came in droves to view his car, knowing that would be the closest most would ever get to him.

• Gold limo tour is a little known story

Before reading Bob’s book, my only knowledge of Elvis’ Gold Cadillac tour of Australia came from a small article in Variety on October 9, 1968. “One of the biggest, long-running attractions to hit Australia is not even a person but a car,” the article began. Over 400,000 people had viewed the car in its first nine months down under, according to the article, with $128,000 having been raised for charitable organizations in Australia.

Of course, Bob’s book added an incredible amount of interesting detail to the story. First of all, for those of us who aren’t up on the myriad of Caddies Elvis owned through the years, Bob identifies the particular one that went on tour. It was a 1960 Series 75 Fleetwood Limousine that cost Elvis $10,000 new. He paid an additional $65,000 to have it customized by George Barris of North Hollywood. According to Bob, it became known as the “Gold” Cadillac “because of the gold plated fittings in and outside the car.”

The description of the customization process explains why so many people were interested in seeing the limo. After its original paint was stripped off, the Cadillac was “repainted with 40 coats of translucent pure diamond dust pearl which consisted of crushed diamonds and fish scales flown in from the Orient.” The interior of the limo was then fitted out with amenities that included a vanity, a bar, a refrigerator, a TV, a record player, a telephone, and a shoe polisher.

It turns out that repeated damage caused by souvenir-seeking fans eventually forced Elvis to stop using the car. It was then sold to Presley’s RCA Victor label to use for promotional purposes. Bob reveals that it was displayed intermittently across the U.S. by RCA from 1965-1967.

• Details given for dozens of Cadillac’s appearances

Then it was arranged for the limo to be shipped to Australia for a tour to raise funds for the Benevolent Society of New South Wales. The Cadillac was unveiled in Sydney on January 17, 1968. In 21 pages of text and photos, Bob recorded the vehicle’s nearly four-dozen appearances in larger cities like Melbourne and smaller communities, such as Wagga Wagga. Attendance records and eyewitness accounts of those events over 40 years ago are included when available.

One of the more interesting side stories concerns the “Elvis Presley Golden Girls.” Most communities selected an attractive young lady to serve as a hostess and tour guide for the Gold Cadillac while it was on display in each city or town. One “Golden Girl” called it “one of the best weeks of her life” when the Caddy came to her town.

Elvis’ limousine went on display at shopping centers, auto dealerships, civic centers, and showgrounds. It also stopped at schools and hospitals, as Colonel Parker insisted that disadvantaged and disabled children should be allowed to view the Cadillac at no charge.

Bob Hayden is planning to published an expanded second edition of his book. Readers have provided him more photos and information about the tour, and he is still seeking more of both. In particular, he is looking for details about the limo’s tour of New Zealand during the first half of 1969 and about it’s American appearances in 1965-1967.

What makes the story of Elvis’ Gold Cadillac tour especially interesting is that it drew hundreds of thousands of viewers in Australia at the time when Presley’s career was at its lowest ebb at home. In 1968 no Elvis single record release reached higher than #30 on Billboard’s Hot 100. His Hollywood career had flamed out and was coming to an end. It wasn’t until December 1968, when the Australian Cadillac tour was nearly over, that Elvis began to revive his career with his NBC-TV special.

• Gold Caddy hot when Elvis’ career was cool

Bob Hayden’s tale reveals the continuing power that the name “Elvis Presley” had over people on the other side of the world even when his popularity at home seemed to be fading. No doubt there are dozens, maybe hundreds, of similar historical tales about Elvis’ legacy that remain untold. They await dedicated fans like Bob Hayden to bring them to the light of day. —  Alan Hanson  |© February 2010

Elvis Presley Wanted To Tour Australia But Colonel Parker Stopped Him

Print this page.

Jerry Schilling was part of the ' Memphis Mafia ' and worked with Elvis Presley and Colonel Tom Parker . 'I was at that late night meeting at the Las Vegas Hilton. Elvis wanted to tour overseas. He wanted to go to Australia. He wanted to go to Japan. The Colonel said, 'if you go I am not going to go with you'. Elvis said 'that's fine, you are fired', Jerry tells Noise11.com.

Colonel Tom was a powerful person in the music industry back then and even Elvis couldn't beat him. 'When Elvis tried to get a tour going no-one would touch him because they were afraid of the Colonel', Jerry said. 'They had the relationship with the Colonel. They respected the Colonel. They did not want to go behind his back. The bottom line Elvis could not stretch the way he wanted to because of the confines of the business'.

The reason Colonel Tom would not let Elvis tour outside the USA was because Colonel Tom was a illegal alien. 'We didn't know that while Elvis was alive', Jerry says. 'That came out after Elvis passed away. One of the Memphis mafia guys called the Colonel and said 'Colonel, you never told us you were from Holland'. The Colonel said, 'well you never asked'.

Colonel Tom made Elvis a star but after a decade Elvis was growing tied of him. 'I think creatively Elvis outgrew the Colonel and that's what caused a major conflict', he says. 'Musically and acting wise Elvis didn't want to do at 30 or 35 what he was doing at 19 and 20 (nor would anybody else). I lived and worked with Elvis and I was with Colonel Parker one day a week. As a young guy I learned a lot about the relationship between and artist and a manager. The manager must understand the creative needs of his artist. He doesn't have to bring him 'Sgt Pepper'. That is for the artist to develop and for him to get it done. The artist must understand what the manager needs to do to promote their artistic work. They need to understand each other's role to make the whole thing successful'.

Schilling says that despite his faults, the Colonel was a genius. 'Colonel Parker is the most misunderstood person in the music industry', he says. 'He was brilliant in a simple way. He could outsmart any mogul or film company owner. Don't ever say Colonel Parker wasn't a brilliant guy. Creativity was not his best quality. He was the go-to bad guy. Colonel Parker was an honest guy. I used to dread going to work for him but at the end of the day it was pretty damn interesting. I became very close to him. I was the closest person to him in the last 20 years of his life'.

Jerry Schilling was in Australia earlier this year for Q&A's about Elvis. Priscilla Presley will return to Australia for encore performances in November.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The catalyst behind the failed gambit to sell off the iconic Graceland property in Memphis is a mystery.

The self-styled investment company also is under fire from a lawsuit alleging fraud , an aggressive attorney general and a community of Elvis Presley loyalists who consider the home-turned-museum of the the king of rock n’ roll to be sacred ground.

Among the many questions surrounding the attempt to auction Graceland is how often cases pop up in which an entity emerges to claim assets of older or dead people. Experts say it’s more common than one might think.

“I have never heard of a fraud targeting such a well-known institution. So it’s a bit surprising on that end,” said Nicole Forbes Stowell, a business law professor at the University of South Florida’s St. Petersburg campus. “But I don’t think it’s surprising to everyday people that are the targets.”

Naussany Investments and Private Lending caused a stir when a public notice for a foreclosure sale of the 13-acre (5-hectare) Graceland estate was posted this month.

The notice said Promenade Trust, which controls the Graceland museum, owed $3.8 million after failing to repay a 2018 loan. Riley Keough , an actor and Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, inherited the trust and ownership of the home after her mother, Lisa Marie Presley , died in 2023.

Naussany said Lisa Marie Presley used Graceland as collateral for the loan, according to the foreclosure sale notice. Keough filed a lawsuit on May 15 alleging Naussany presented fraudulent documents regarding the loan in September 2023 and asking a Memphis judge to block the sale to the highest bidder.

“Lisa Maria Presley never borrowed money from Naussany Investments and never gave a deed of trust to Naussany Investments,” Keough’s lawyer Jeff Germany wrote in the lawsuit.

“It’s a scam,” actor Priscilla Presley, Elvis’ former wife, declared on her social media accounts.

On Wednesday, an injunction by Shelby County Chancellor JoeDae Jenkins halted the sale , which was planned for the next day. Jenkins said in court that Elvis Presley’s estate could be successful in arguing Nausanny’s attempt to auction Graceland is fraudulent.

One reason is an affidavit from Kimberly Philbrick, the Florida notary whose name is listed on Naussany’s documents. Philbrick indicated she never met Lisa Marie Presley or notarized any documents for her, according to the lawsuit. The judge said the affidavit brought the signature’s authenticity into question.

On the relevant documents, the signature blocks were not correct and the paperwork references an online notarization option that was not recognized in Florida until 2020, two years after the alleged notarization, Stowell said.

“That makes me wonder if these documents were created after Lisa Marie passed away,” Stowell said. “The whole thing does not pass the smell test.”

Mark Sunderman, a University of Memphis real estate professor, questioned why the lender would foreclose now if it had not received payments years after the loan was issued.

“If someone starts missing payments or hasn’t made a payment, you’re not going to sit around for a couple of years and then say, ‘Golly, I think we need to foreclose now,’” Sunderman said.

The lender’s legitimacy also is in doubt after unsuccessful attempts by The Associated Press to verify its existence beyond an email address and court filing signed by a Gregory Naussany.

Court documents included company addresses in Jacksonville, Florida, and Hollister, Missouri. Both were for post offices, and a Kimberling City, Missouri, reference was for a post office box. The business also is not listed in state databases of registered corporations in Missouri or Florida.

“I’ve never heard of that business,” Kimberling City Clerk Laura Cather said.

A search of online records for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority showed no registration for the company. No representatives of Naussany appeared in court, though the company filed an unsuccessful motion denying the lawsuit’s allegations and opposing the estate’s request for an injunction.

After the sale was halted, Naussany issued a statement saying it would drop its claim because a key document in the case and loan were recorded and obtained in a different state, meaning “legal action would have to be filed in multiple states.” The statement did not specify the other state.

Naussany has not responded to emailed interview requests from the AP. Online court records did not show any legal filings suggesting the claim, or the lawsuit, had been dropped.

Sunderman, the Memphis professor, said that apparently fraudulent claims involving real estate asset disputes arise more often than people think, especially in situations involving inheritances.

“It’s very difficult for someone to say, ‘Well, no, I didn’t take out this loan, I didn’t sign these papers,’ when they’re dead,’” Sunderman said.

Darrell Castle, a Memphis attorney not involved in the case but monitoring it, said he often sees cases where older people are targets of fraud.

“I get cases quite often where people who are really helpless in the final stages of life in a nursing home are financially victimized,” Castle said. “The human mind will think of some way to cheat and steal if it can.”

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said Thursday that his office was looking into the case to determine whether the estate was targeted with fraud.

Skrmetti’s office can investigate and bring civil lawsuits, including in instances of alleged consumer fraud. It could turn over evidence of criminal wrongdoing to the district attorney or federal authorities.

Opened in 1982, Graceland quickly became Memphis’ most famous tourist attraction and a touchstone for fans of Elvis Presley, the singer, actor and fashion icon who died in August 1977 at the age of 42. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock annually to the museum and the large entertainment complex across the street.

Who would target it with a scheme that “fell apart with the first email and phone call, or internet search,” and what holes in the legal system let it got closer to the auction block than it should have, should be the focuses of the attorney general, said Nikos Passas, a Northeastern University criminology and criminal justice professor.

“The chance of succeeding in what they were trying to do — that is, to get the property auctioned off and get the proceeds and then use the money — doesn’t seem to be the actual intent, unless they are incredibly stupid,” Passas said. “So, the question is then, ‘What was the intent, and who was behind it?’”

Mattise reported from Nashville, Tennessee. AP reporter Heather Hollingsworth contributed from Mission, Kansas.

Jennifer Lopez shares message about 'negativity' amid tour cancellation

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

This is Jennifer Lopez now.

The A-list singer is spreading the love amid her tour cancellation and Ben Affleck split rumors, thanking fans "so much" for making her Netflix space movie "Atlas" a No. 1 film worldwide.

"It may seem like there's a lot of negativity out in the world right now…but don't let the voices of a few drown out that there is soooo much love out there," Lopez said in a statement on her newsletter Wednesday.

The statement comes after JLo announced in her On The JLo fan newsletter last week that she canceled her  summer North American tour ,  which was to be her first in five years, weeks before it was scheduled to start.

Jennifer Lopez cancels 2024 tour This Is Me: 'Completely heartsick and devastated'

"Representatives for Live Nation announced today that the Jennifer Lopez US Summer 2024 Tour 'THIS IS ME...LIVE' is canceled, citing ... 'Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,'" the newsletter said at the time last week.

The statement was followed by  a personal note from Lopez, writing that she was "completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," adding that she loved her fans "so much. Until next time."

Last month, social media was abuzz after Lopez last month at the premiere of  her new film "Atlas"  − without  her husband . The 54-year-old made an appearance on the red carpet with her wedding ring and People magazine reported  that Affleck missed the red carpet because he was filming "The Accountant 2."

But it didn't stop the solo red-carpet pit stop from fueling marriage rumors.

Earlier this year, she released her album " This is Me … Now " and its complementary  musical film, "This is Me … Now: A Love Story " and the Amazon Prime documentary " The Greatest Love Story Never Told " which followed her  reuniting with her now-husband  after decades apart. The pair, who were an early 2000s power couple, reunited and married in summer 2022.
