World Dream: Balcony Stateroom Review

Aaron Wong

World Dream's Balcony Staterooms are comfortable and functional, if basic. Here's what to expect during your voyage.

After boarding the World Dream and completing the brief muster drill, I headed to my stateroom to drop off my bag.

If you’ve sailed on Quantum of the Seas before, the first thing you’ll notice is how different the vibe on World Dream is. The PA system plays traditional Chinese music, elevator announcements were in Mandarin and English, and signage throughout the ship was a mixture of (thankfully simplified) Chinese and English. It’s quite a change from the more international-focused Royal Caribbean sailings, that’s for sure.

Room Selection & Upgrades

Staterooms on World Dream are divided into the following categories:

My KrisFlyer Experiences booking was for a Balcony stateroom, and as I mentioned previously, I suspect that Interior or Oceanview staterooms aren’t even being sold right now. Cruise ship capacity is capped at 50% after all, so it only makes sense to sell the more expensive cabins.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

Should you wish to upgrade your room, there are two ways of doing so. The first is to wait for Dream Cruises to send you an upgrade bidding email prior to sailing. This leverages the Plusgrade platform, the same one that Royal Caribbean (and numerous airlines) uses.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

Enter your bid, provide your credit card details, and wait. You’ll be informed whether your bid is successful at least 72 hours before sailing. Bidding closes at the T-7 mark, and all bids can be modified or cancelled anytime before they’re accepted.

For a three-night itinerary, the minimum bid for an upgrade to a Palace Suite was S$340 per person, based on an occupancy of two people (this is quoted for the entire duration of your voyage, not per night). Keep in mind that you’ll also need to pay an extra S$5 per person per night in gratuities, should you upgrade from a regular stateroom to a suite.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

The second option is to wait until you’re onboard, then go to the front desk and ask about paid upgrades. I was quoted S$621 to upgrade to a Palace Suite, which would increase to S$984 if I had a companion.

In terms of stateroom location, Dream Cruises doesn’t let you choose this online (unlike Royal Caribbean). You’ll need to email the reservations department to request a particular cabin, subject to availability.

I’ve already given some tips on choosing staterooms , which apply regardless of which cruise liner you’re on. However, for World Dream specifically I’d highly advise that you avoid connecting rooms , as these have thinner walls and you can easily hear the people next door (I know, I was in one of them briefly).

Connecting staterooms

Non-connecting rooms, as the photo below shows, have a much wider partition between them which does wonders for noise isolation.

Non-connecting staterooms

To identify connecting rooms, look for the grey arrow symbol circled in red below in the deck plan. For example, 12030 and 12032 are connecting rooms, but 12036 and 12038 are not.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

World Dream: Balcony Stateroom

I didn’t bother to request a specific stateroom beforehand, so I lucked out by getting 12038, a non-connecting one. The main disadvantage was the location, way towards the front of the ship. I guess it gave me the opportunity to exercise more (I had to walk the entire length of the ship every time I went to the MDR), but it also meant more turbulence from the ship’s movement. It never got unbearable, but it was definitely noticeable.

World Dream stateroom 12038

Balcony staterooms measure in at 215 sq. ft. While that sounds like cramped quarters, it’s actually not so bad if there’s just one or two of you. Remember, in an ideal situation, you’ll be spending most of your time outside the stateroom anyway, and this is mostly a place to bathe and sleep.

World Dream Balcony Stateroom

The World Dream is a fairly new vessel (launched in November 2017), so the interiors and furnishings are pretty up to date. The room felt clean, with a lingering smell of disinfectant.

I’d read some bad reviews of the beds on Dream Cruises, but having experienced it firsthand, I didn’t see what all the fuss was about. It could be because the bed is on the firmer side, which some people dislike, but that suited me just fine. The blankets were sufficiently thick for me to blast the air-conditioning at my preferred temperature.

Stateroom bed

On the bed was a welcome letter for KrisFlyer members who redeemed this cruise via KrisFlyer Experiences. This offered 20% off all specialty restaurants and VR games, plus discounts on spa and fitness packages. I’ll talk more about these in the dining and activities section, suffice to say you’re not missing out on anything even if you booked via other channels.

KrisFlyer member welcome letter

Both bedside tables had 2x USB-A ports and a Singapore Type G socket.

Bedside charging

On one side of the bed was the wardrobe, which had extra bedding, a pair of bathrobes, and a safe.

Stateroom wardrobe

Near the window was a brown sofa. Although it looks like the kind that folds out into a bed, it’s just a regular sofa.

Stateroom sofa

The stateroom has a small work desk cum dressing table, although the chair has no back and is uncomfortable to sit on for prolonged periods.

Stateroom desk

If you have serious work to do (why), head to the lobby instead where you’ll lots of co-working style tables, some of which have power and USB ports.

Coworking tables

The desk in the stateroom had another Type G Singapore outlet, plus a Type I outlet- haven’t seen one of those in a very long time! These are used mostly in Australia, New Zealand, China and Argentina.

Power outlets

Wi-Fi is available on World Dream, with packages starting from S$9 per night.

I subscribed to the regular package and found the speeds to be very fast, much faster than Royal Caribbean for sure (how they can claim to have the fastest Wi-Fi at sea is beyond me). I may have just gotten lucky with where the ship happened to be and the prevailing weather conditions when I did the test, however.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

My advice would be to go for the regular speed package first and see if it’s sufficient for your needs. If it’s not, you can always head to the front desk to pay the difference and get upgraded to the faster network.

Below the desk was a hairdryer, affixed to the wall (you can’t unplug it and move it elsewhere).

Hairdryer

Two complimentary bottles of mineral water were sitting on the table. These are replenished once a day, and additional bottles can be bought for S$2. There’s no need to pay though, as iced water is free at all restaurants, and the bathroom’s tapwater is potable.

Bottled water

Instant coffee and tea were also available, plus a kettle. It’s Nescafe 3 in 1, so bring your own Starbucks Via if you’re fussy about this kind of thing.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

The room’s mini-fridge was empty, allowing you to store your own items inside. FYI, Dream Cruises prohibits passengers from bringing their own alcohol onboard (unlike Royal Caribbean, which allows two bottles of wine per stateroom). You can, however, bring non-alcoholic beverages of your own.

Mini-bar

If you’re feeling peckish, you can order from a limited room service menu. Mains start from S$15 nett, and I much prefer Royal Caribbean’s model where you pay a flat US$7.95 + 18% delivery charge and order as much as you want.

Room service menu

Next to the table was the stateroom’s TV. It does not support streaming, but you can bring your own HDMI cable and connect from the back.

Stateroom TV

One nice thing about Dream Cruises is that the in-room movies are free of charge (Royal Caribbean charges a whopping US$11.99 each, more than the cost of a Disney+ subscription!). It’s not a huge selection, but there were some fairly recent titles like Dumbo and Tenet (which, let’s face it, no one understands).

Movie selections

I was also pleased that the TV had live sports, which let me enjoy the Australian Open while onboard.

Sports channel

The bathroom is snug, but equipped with everything you’d need.

Balcony Stateroom Bathroom

Those who really want a bit more space could spring for a Balcony Deluxe Room, which features a slightly larger bathroom with dual sinks and a rectangular shower area.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

Just like Quantum of the Seas, World Dream’s toilets don’t have bidet hoses- weird, because I thought it’d be more environmentally-friendly to wash with water than introduce more toilet paper into the system. You’ll need to close the toilet lid completely to access the flush button.

Toilet

The shower cubicle isn’t as tight a squeeze as I feared, and if you’re of average proportions, you won’t find it an issue.

Shower cubicle

Water pressure was OK but not great (as expected, a cruise ship’s water supply is deliberately throttled for environmental reasons). Here’s a tip: the knob for the shower has an “eco” setting that prevents you from turning it on full blast. Simply press the small button to bypass it, and you’ll be able to increase the water pressure even more.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

Bathroom amenities are from Crystal Life, Dream Cruises’ in-house spa brand. They’re not fancy by any means, but they get the job done.

Bathroom amenities

Other amenities already in the room include toothbrushes and a hand soap dispenser. If you require other items like shavers or combs, they’re available from housekeeping.

Bathroom amenities

One final point to note about the bathroom: there’s a step between the bathroom and the bedroom. Be extra careful if you go at night, because it’s easy to trip in the dark.

Step between bathroom and bedroom

The balcony area is extremely cramped, with barely enough space for two chairs and a tiny patio table. I didn’t spend any time out here, and I don’t think most people will either. Smoking is permitted on balconies, so you may get second hand smoke from your neighbours if you’re unlucky. On the plus side, the area had been cleaned well, with no trace of ash or lingering smoke smell.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

All things considered, the Balcony Staterooms on World Dream are comfortable enough for short voyages, providing a private space to rest and recharge in between all the activities onboard.

If you’re looking for a review of the Palace Suites on World Dream, I managed to find a post-COVID one here .

Aaron Wong

thanks! enjoyed reading your report, some very useful details in there.

ZYX

The PA is in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. The description on connection room is not accurate, most of connection rooms are on deck 12 and 13 only.

Curious

Eh, can I check right, the non-alcoholic beverages, do we check them in or hand carry? Any limits to the amount of soft drink we can bring aboard?

The security check is like airport style? ie xray checks and stuff?

world dream does not allow you to bring booze on board. that is Royal caribbean.

Hi Aaron, not booze. Referring to normal drinks…

oops my bad. you will have to hand carry. they don’t state a limit, i suppose as long as you don’t bring a whole mama shop they won’t say anything.

yes there is x-ray, metal detector

Mike

Very useful. Thanks!

Andrew

Thank you for your great review, Aaron. Are you going to try the Palace?

i considered booking the krisflyer cruise but the 21 day no travel before boarding policy made me change my mind.

Oh you are flying out of Singapore?

In Nov 2020, Singapore began cruises to nowhere . It’s not very different from regular cruises except this time, there aren’t any ports of call. You leave Singapore’s shores and return without stepping foot in other countries.

We had the pleasure of sailing on the World Dream — the newest ship of the Dream Cruises fleet just built in 2017!

For those wondering if a cruise to nowhere is safe and worth it — we’ve sussed out the whole experience — from pre-boarding process and accommodation as well as things to do , food onboard , and safety precautions . Here’s our no holds barred experience of our three-night stay on the World Dream!

Pre-boarding Process for a Cruise to Nowhere

Marina Bay Cruise Centre

Thanks to COVID-19, there are a few extra steps to take before getting on the cruise:

1) Check-in online before your cruise (up to 90 days before departure) — upload a scanned copy of your passport or NRIC. 2) On the day of departure, guests will have to check in via SafeEntry, undergo temperature screening and fill in a health declaration form. 3) All guests will have to take a COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test (ART) at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre (level 3). Check your pre-assigned timeslot for the test, printed on the ticket. 4) After receiving a negative ART result, check-in your baggage.

*Pro-tip: Pack light and skip the baggage check-in to save time.

TRACEY Pod for Contact Tracing

5) Collect your key card and TRACEY — for contact tracing. These must be with you at all times on the ship. 6) Lastly, immigration. The automatic lanes now use facial recognition, so you don’t have to scan your thumb.

Despite the extra steps, the entire check-in process was actually very smooth and only took about 45 minutes in total. If you check the World Dream FAQ page, it states that waiting time for the swab results can take up to an hour — ours only took 20 minutes.

Note that the ART is slightly different from the PCR test — it’s a lot less intrusive and painless!

Accommodation on board Dream Cruises’ World Dream

Balcony deluxe stateroom.

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

Our room for the next three nights!

Our Balcony Deluxe Stateroom had a comfy queen-size bed, large sofa, flat-screen TV and a private balcony. This was my virgin cruise experience and I was pretty impressed with the size of the room.

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom Bathroom - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The bathroom was really spacious too, with a dual-tap sink and rain shower with seriously good water pressure — no complaints so far!

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom Balcony View - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

It was surprisingly comfortable, but the best part is looking out on the balcony and realising you’re no longer on land — ah, that ever-changing sea view.

Sunrise view from Balcony - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

A gorgeous sunrise view from our balcony on the first morning

*Pro-tip: If your room isn’t facing the east side, head to Zouk Beach Club at the back of the ship for an uninterrupted sunrise view.

Cost: From ~S$300/pax for two nights

The Palace Privilege - Dream Cruise Palace

While the Balcony staterooms are cosy, we got to visit The Palace — it’s basically the Sentosa Cove of the ship!

Staying here gives you access to exclusive restaurants and programmes, 24-hour butler service, and priority access to shows. The Palace also has its own facilities that non-Palace guests can’t access, like a separate pool and gym — talk about living that bougie life for three nights!

Palace Suite

Palace Suite Dream Cruise Accommodation - Dream Cruise Palace

Palace Suites include a queen bed, sofa bed and a luxury bathroom with a bathtub. You can also look forward to a complimentary mini-bar and Nespresso coffee machine.

The best part is the balcony — it’s twice the size of the one in the Balcony Deluxe Room!

Cost: From ~S$660/pax for two nights

We also got to tour the best suite onboard — the Palace Villa. It has two bedrooms, a dining room, living room and three bathrooms.

The Palace Villa’s master bathroom. Just wow.

There’s plenty of outdoor space too, like a private sun deck, jacuzzi and sauna. At the front of the ship, no less!

Free Things to Do on a Cruise to Nowhere

Thrilling activities.

Waterslide Park

Waterslide Park - Things to do a Cruise to Nowhere

The Waterslide Park has five thrilling slides — three looping slides and two steep drops! The loop slides are a lot of fun, with clear segments for sneaky views of the ocean. Just a fair warning that the drops are not for the faint-hearted!

Workout and Dance Classes

Muay Thai Class - Things to do a Cruise to Nowhere

Some of the most underrated cruise activities are the free fitness and dance classes! There are at least two classes daily.

Ballroom Dancing - Things to do a Cruise to Nowhere

Ballroom dancing taught by Gabriele from Italy and Laura from Spain!

Being the fomo / kiasu travellers, we attended four in total — Muay Thai, HIIT, Ballroom Dance and Bellydance. These ended up being one of the highlights of our cruise! It was a great experience being taught by instructors from all over the world.

My favourites were the dance classes. As someone with no dance background and limited grace, they were a lot more fun than expected. The instructors were friendly and patient, and the moves weren’t too hard to pick up — I’m ready to start my own dance crew now 😎

Sunset HIIT with Natalie Yeo - Cruise to Nowhere Genting World Dream

Post-HIIT with personal trainer Natalie Yeo .

Classes are limited to 15 – 20pax on a first-come-first-serve basis, but the ones we attended were less than half-filled. What a waste! But now that you can’t leave the ship, it’s the best time to try all these fun classes. Classes can be found on the Dream Daily — a daily newsletter you get at the start of each day.

Ropes Course and Zipline

Zipline - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The rooftop Ropes Course is a good source of adrenaline — navigate through different obstacles and end off by ziplining over the ocean!

Sportsplex Rooftop Basketball Court - Things to do on the Genting World Dream

There’s even a full-sized basketball court to shoot some hoops! This space is also occasionally used for fun activities like a reverse bungee run. Reserve your slot at Deck 18, at the Ropes Course area.

Rock Climbing Wall

Rock Climbing Wall - Things to do on the Genting World Dream

Scale new heights at the rock wall on Deck 18! The course isn’t too difficult so it’s perfect for kids and beginners.

Crystal Life Fitness

Crystal Life Fitness Gym - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

Squeeze in a quick workout at the well-equipped Crystal Life Fitness gym. There are several treadmills, gym machines, and a weight-training area to help you work up a sweat.

Plus the view provides extra motivation to work harder! Book a slot in person at the counter on Deck 15.

Chill Activities

Main Pool Deck

Main pool deck - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

At the heart of all the action lies the main pool deck, with four relaxing jacuzzis.

Currently, the pool is limited to 26pax, while the jacuzzi is limited to two guests each for hourly timeslots. You’ll have to reserve a slot at the pool reception desk.

Mini Golf - Things to do on the Genting World Dream

Enjoy a chill game of mini golf with your friends on Deck 17 — no bookings required!

Cinema at Sea

Zouk Beach Club Movie Screening - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

Zouk Beach Club is now used as an outdoor movie theatre!

There’s a broad selection of films playing throughout the day around the cruise. On our sailing, there was Jumanji: The Next Level at the outdoor Zouk Beach Club, Spiderman: Far From Home at the Zodiac Theatre, and Bad Boys for Life at The Lobby. There are about six films playing each day.

The Paid Stuff on a Cruise to Nowhere

Some activities on World Dream require an additional charge but are still worthwhile for a more unique experience.

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB Virtuix Omni Dream Cruise Activities - Cruise to Nowhere

Virtuix Omni.

For some virtual reality fun, check out Esc EXPERIENCE LAB . On World Dream, there are eight exciting games — from full-motion rollercoasters to Formula 1 racing simulators.

Our top pick is the Virtuix Omni, a multi-directional simulator with free range of motion, allowing you to chase down (or run from) zombies.

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB Icaros Flying Simulator - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The Icaros Flying Simulator is a close second — you’re essentially a drone hunting enemy drones.

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB eSports Arena - Dream Cruises' World Dream

The Esc EXPERIENCE LAB includes an eSports Arena which hosts daily tournaments for popular games like Street Fighter and Tekken 7 . When there aren’t tournaments, you can book the space and enjoy games like Mario Kart on the big screen!

Cost: S$4 – S$20 per game

*Pro-tip: Look out for special game promotions on the Dream Daily like S$40 for 30 minutes of unlimited gameplay!

Guest playing at the Arcade - Dream Cruises' Dream

There’s a small arcade onboard — a whole separate venue from the Esc EXPERIENCE LAB.

Cost: ~S$3/game

Crystal Life Spa

Crystal Life Spa - Dream Cruises' World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The Crystal Life Spa is the place to go for a full on pampering session. You could get a full-body massage, detox facial, or makeover. We opted for a spa access pass (S$20/pax) to enjoy the sauna, steam room and vitality pools (both hot and cold!).

Cost: From S$20

Food — Where and what to eat on a cruise to nowhere

Free restaurants (no top-up required).

The Lido - Things to do a Cruise to Nowhere

The Lido is the free buffet spread you’d expect on a cruise. Here, there are rows of international cuisine like Indian curry, laksa , pizza, and a mountain of desserts — all in one place.

The Lido Breakfast - Things to eat on the Genting World Dream

Breakfast for four! We might have gone slightly overboard.

The Lido Buffet Queue - Things to do on the World Dream

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, you won’t be able to help yourself to the food. On the plus side, the friendly servers are very generous with the portions. There’s also a 24-hour snack bar right outside, perfect for midnight munchies.

Dream Dining Room Lower

Dream Dining Room Lower - Cruise to Nowhere Review Genting World Dream

For Western fare, check out Dream Dining Room Lower for a tasty three-course meal!

Main course options for lunch include Sauteed Black Pepper Beef, Fish and Chips, and Fusilli Pasta. The menu varies a lot, so don’t worry about having the same meal twice.

Dream Dining Room Upper

Lunch at Dream Dining Upper - Things to eat on the World Dream

Dreaming Dining Room Upper serves zi char -style Chinese cuisine. On the menu for the day: Sweet and sour pork, Chinese cabbage, pork ribs, and bitter gourd soup.

The dinner menu that day looked really appetising — assam pedas seasonal fish and wok-fried frog legs!

*Pro-tip: Opt for lunch here as it gets pretty packed during dinner.

Specialty Restaurants (top-up required)

There are over 20 specialty restaurants and bars on the World Dream. The prices are comparable to Singapore restaurant prices, but with an 18% service charge.

For the experience, we’d recommend setting aside at least one meal at a specialty restaurant.

Umi Uma Teppanyaki Chef Cooking - Things to eat on the Genting World Dream

For us, we tried Umi Uma, a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, where set meals start from S$58.

I’ve had teppanyaki before, but nothing like this. Our chef was a man of many talents. He taught us how to juggle an egg with a spatula and let us (attempt to) catch food with our mouths. Talk about dinner and a show!

Umi Uma Teppanyaki - Cruise to Nowhere Review Genting World Dream

The food itself was great. I enjoyed a juicy filet mignon steak, with salad, fried rice and stir-fried veggies on the side. For dessert, I opted for green tea ice cream with a matcha cake. Yum!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for a Cruise to Nowhere

World Dream Cruise Palace Penthouse - Royal Carribean Vs World Dream

1) Do I need to be fully vaccinated to go on a Cruise to Nowhere?

As of now, guests don’t need to be vaccinated. However, you do need to be fully vaccinated to dine-in on board — the same as the current guidelines.

Take note that from 21 Nov 2021, all World Dream sailings will require its guests to be fully vaccinated, excluding children aged 12 and below. Guests must complete their vaccination at least 14 days before the cruising date to be eligible for the cruise.

2) Do I have to take a COVID-19 test?

Yes, as an added safety precaution, all guests have to take the COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test (ART) before boarding. The cost of the ART will be waived for new World Dream bookings for cruises departing from 20 Jan 2021 – 1 Apr 2022.

3) What are the safety precautions on board?

Contact tracing: Every guest is given a key card and TRACEY pod which has to be on you at all times. Your key card is required for tap in everywhere you go — restaurants, shops, shows etc. It’s like the ship’s version of SafeEntry.

Your temperature is also taken before entering potentially crowded areas, like theatres or restaurants.

VERRY CHRISTMAS Dance Performance - Things to do on the World Dream

Reduced capacity: In general, the ship is limited to a capacity of 50%, or 1,700 passengers — which is great for guests because other than mealtimes, we didn’t feel it was crowded at all. Most activities like waterslides and virtual reality games didn’t require waiting in queues!

This also applies to shows, restaurants and activities. The Zodiac Theatre, for example, currently allows 250 people, just 25% of its usual capacity. Don’t worry about missing shows, there are multiple timings to ensure all guests have a chance to catch them.

Hand sanitiser: These stations can be found all over the ship, as well as safe distancing markers on the floor reminding guests to practise social distancing.

4) Are reservations required for activities and shows?

Shows and classes are on a first-come-first-serve basis. But places like the spa, swimming pool, jacuzzis, SportsPlex and gym require reservations.

5) Where can I get the detailed schedule?

Guest looking at display screen - Cruise to Nowhere Review Genting World Dream

You can check the crowd level at each restaurant!

The detailed schedule is only accessible once onboard the World Dream, via a daily newsletter called the Dream Daily. You can find it on the Dream Cruises app , physical copies delivered to your room, and on the many screens around the ship.

Dream Cruises App - Genting World Dream Cruise to Nowhere

The Dream Cruises app

The Dream Cruises app allows you to book WiFi packages, view Dream Dining’s menu for the day, as well as the day’s highlights. Download the app before boarding!

The Dream Daily gets released at around 7PM – 11PM daily, so you’ll know what’s on the agenda for the next day.

6) WiFi on board?

WiFi packages are available via the Dream Daily app from S$9 per day. The WiFi speed was fast and reliable, I only experienced a short 10-minute disconnection during the entire cruise.

7) How do I pay for additional activities and specialty restaurants?

All payments will be charged to your room card. Payments must be settled on the World Dream app before you disembark.

8) Are the restaurants on board Halal-certified?

The World Dream is Asia Pacific’s first Halal-friendly cruise ship! Both The Lido and in-room dining services are halal-certified. Halal options are also available at Dream Dining Room Lower upon request.

9) What other facilities are there for Muslim guests?

The World Dream offers a dedicated prayer room. Prayer gowns and mats will also be provided upon request.

10) Does the ship dock anywhere? Where will we be sailing to?

No, it is a cruise to nowhere , after all. The World Dream sails along the Straits of Malacca, where the waters are calmer.

Is a Cruise to Nowhere Worth It?

View from the Room - Passenger on a Cruise to Nowhere

The most important question of all — Yes!

If you’re willing to pay ~S$200/night for a staycation in Singapore (excluding food and activities), a cruise to nowhere is way more satisfying.

From ~ S$259/pax , you get a two-night stay with a sea view and your meals are free. Not forgetting free access to amenities like the pool, gym, waterslide park, ropes course, as well as top-tier shows and fun classes. Just the free stuff alone is enough to keep you occupied!

World Dream Ship on Ocean - Cruise to nowhere

While some look forward to the various ports of call on pre-COVID cruises, a cruise to nowhere allows you to truly explore and enjoy the ship’s facilities. Plus, you’ll have time to try the different classes and watch all the shows!

Esc EXPERIENCE LAB VR Maze - Things to do on the World Dream

Although we didn’t go anywhere, we still felt like we were on a holiday. Nothing like getting a text message asking you to activate your overseas data plan to get you in the vacation mood. 😂

Hi how fast the wifi? Standard package can open youtube/netflix & video call? Or need to opt for premium package? Is mobile data totally can’t be used on board?

Hi Mira! The Wifi was pretty good, and yes you can watch shows and you should be able to video call! If you use mobile data it’ll be data roaming as the ship sails to international waters.

How does the onboard wifi work? Do you have to log in to a landing page where you key in a user name and password like hotels, and can you hotspot it to your laptop or something? Thanks!

The Wifi is accessed through the Dream Cruises app. Once you’re on board (before you set sail), you’ll have to purchase the package through the app, using your own Wifi/Data in order to activate it. The app is only available on mobile thus we weren’t able to access wifi on our laptops.

Do ensure you’ve downloaded the app before boarding. Hope this helps!

hi, Kim after the cruise was there a need to be self- quarantine for a period of time?

Hi Jane! There wasn’t a need to self-quarantine after the cruise. The safe distancing measures on the ship were pretty extensive, from having to book timeslots for activities to alternate seats for movies and shows.

Thanks for this write up guys!!! Was still contemplating coz it’s still a cruise to nowhere but after reading y’all made me want to go! Awesome….. thanks

Glad you found it useful Sabrina! We had a lot of fun on our cruise — definitely a welcome break despite not actually going anywhere

after back from cruise & if fill up declaration form eg in a clinic, question on where “travel overseas”, is cruise to nowhere considered travelled overseas ?

Hi Shirley, nope it’s not!

Hi, Thank you for your reivew. It is really helpful for planning my trip. Can I check with you? Which deck did you choose during your trip? Can you choose or they choose for us? Any tips for that?

That’s great to hear! I don’t think you get to choose your deck. You select a room type and then get assigned a deck 🙂 Like how Balcony Staterooms are on decks 8-13 and 15! You can check which rooms are on each deck here: https://www.dreamcruiseline.com/world-dream-rooms

Do you have to book activities in advance ? If so, do you know how to book ?

Hi Jac! you can only book the activities using the Cruise App once you are onboard.

hi, is there a restaurant where they sell cakes? I’m going to the dream cruise on my b day

4 chocolatey christmas gift ideas from godiva, genting world dream cruises: 7 things you need to know before going on a cruise.

My family enjoys going on a cruise. I’ve been on a cruise getaway almost every consecutive year since I was 7 till I was in my teens and started realising that hanging out with my friends in malls is way cooler. Since then, I’ve never stepped onboard a cruise till two weeks ago. I guess going on a cruise is the next best thing to a staycation during this pandemic.

Even though it was my first time on Dream Cruises , I felt like I knew what to expect onboard the ship. You could say that I was rather well-prepared for the trip because my parents went several times with Dream cruises before and during the pandemic. They told me that it was as enjoyable and true enough, it isn’t a very fantastic trip even though everyone on social media is hyping about how fun it is to be on a cruise.

Nonetheless, I can’t deny the fact that it felt good to just step off the island and get out into the sea. So I wouldn’t discourage anybody from doing sea-cation but if you want to, here are 7 things you need to know before you go on a cruise with Dream Cruises.

Table of Contents

1. You can check in earlier than the given timing by Dream Cruises.

I’m not sure if Genting Dream Cruises will hate me for telling you this but you can actually head to the cruise centre to do the COVID-19 test earlier than your scheduled timings. I was scheduled for the test at 5.45 pm but I went to take my test around 12 pm. And regulars who have been to this cruise many times would also come way ahead of others.

The benefits of boarding the cruise early are plenty. You can get your lunch onboard at one of their inclusive restaurants (since your Dream Cruises ticket is inclusive of all meals onboard) or speciality restaurants (where you have to pay to dine). On top of that, you will have time to make reservations for the use of pools, gyms and other facilities. Given that most of us would have forked out hundreds of dollars for the cruise getaway, why not make your money’s worth by heading there early?

2. Be prepared to wait for a period of time before you go onboard.

If you’re not staying at one of their Palace suites, then do be prepared to wait and queue. When you reach Marina Bay Cruise centre, you have to head up to level 2 to deposit your luggage (if you wish to) and then head up to do your COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test (ART). The whole screening test took about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the crowd. Since we went there early, the waiting time isn’t very long. Within 5 minutes, we were asked to head to one of the booths to do the swab test.

After the test, we were ushered to the waiting area to wait for our results. Health Promotion Board will first notify you via your TraceTogether app before you receive the SMS notification.

After the test, you still got to queue to check in. They will check your passports and issue you the Tracey token which you must carry with you at all times. The boarding time is approximately 2 pm so we still have to wait for our turn to get on board. By the time, when it was our turn, it was already 2.30 pm.

Thus I would suggest bringing some things to do there in order to kill time. You can read a book or catch up with some work in the waiting area. They will also hand out their daily schedule or newsletter when you can find out what the events happening that day onboard. You can spend the time planning what you would like to do.

3. The food at Dream Cruises inclusive restaurants is not that great so be prepared to pay if you want better quality food.

Your Dream Cruises ticket is inclusive of all meals but you can only enjoy your ‘free meals’ at their inclusive restaurants like Dream Dining Room Lower (Western food), Dream Dining Room Upper (Chinese food) and the Lido (International buffet). We prefer dining at the Lido because you can try a variety of food. However, they are some hits and misses. I would say the food there is average but at least, you get to try some spicy food from the halal section or Indian food at their vegetarian section. Somehow the breakfast nasi lemak there tastes pretty good. Do try it!

If you did not already know, Dream Cruises is a halal-friendly cruise with halal dining options. Currently, the halal food section is only available at The Lido and the snack bar. There is also a prayer room on Deck 5.

As for the beverages, they serve syrup processed juices. If you want quality drinks like a glass of fresh fruit juice or iced lemon tea, you will have to pay extra for it.

The food standard at the Dream Dining Room Lower was especially poor. I think we’ve been served dishes which were made out of cheap ingredients. We did not quite enjoy the western breakfast we had because it was obviously prepared in a haste.

The Chinese food at Dream Dining Room Upper tasted slightly better. That explains why this restaurant is always packed and sometimes you will have to queue to get in. On some occasions, we were asked to head to other restaurants because the restaurant has reached its full capacity.

We heard that the speciality restaurants like Prime Steakhouse by Mark Best and Umi Uma offers great food but we did not want to fork out extra since we have already forked out $500 just for this sea-cation. A more affordable option is to dine at The lobby cafe on Deck 6. They offer several local food dishes and pastries at affordable prices.

4. There’s a 24-hour snack bar and you can pack food to bring to your rooms to eat.

There’s a 24-hour snack bar where you can munch on potato wedges, chicken nuggets, curry puffs, fried bee hoon and other small bites like buns and sandwiches.

They also provide drinks like apple juice, orange juice, coffee, tea and milk. Strangely, I’ve seen several people asking for milk which is dispensed from the machine. It tastes just like UHT milk except that it is cold and a little frothy.

And if you are feeling peckish at night, you can actually ask them to pack so that you can bring it back to the room to eat. By the way, you can also do take-aways for your meals if you want to have your meals in the room. You can call their reception and make a request.

5. The Balcony State Rooms at Dream Cruises are superb and well-furnished.

We got the Balcony Deluxe stateroom which is only slightly bigger than the Balcony stateroom. I believe that there isn’t much of a difference between the rooms except for the size of it.

I can’t complain anything about the room except that the curtains appeared to be quite dusty. Other than that, everything else is great. I love their ultra-comfy mattress and beddings. The ensuite bathroom is well-maintained and very clean. It even has a bathtub!

There’s a small balcony where you can go out to sunbathe. It’s nice to just chill at the balcony and enjoy some quiet time to yourself. You can also hang your laundry there if you intend to wash some of your clothes.

Toiletries like toothbrushes, shampoo, body soap, lotion and hair conditioner are all provided. There’s a hairdryer installed under the dressing table too.

6. You will need to make reservations to use the swimming pools, jacuzzi and gym.

Due to the strict social distancing measures, they can only allow a certain number of people to be using these facilities for a limited period of time. I recommend making your reservations right after you board the ship. Otherwise, you may have to queue just to book a slot. You are only entitled to use the pool or jacuzzi for up to 1 hour per day.

The gym is another popular spot too. It’s usually fully booked and we regret not booking it on the first day. We ended up having to wait until someone leaves so that we can enter the gym. However, I must say that the gym is pretty amazing. It is a state-of-the-art gym equipped with advanced training and exercise equipment. I enjoy using treadmills and other exercise machines but could only stay up to an hour and a half.

As for the pool slides, you just have to queue and wait for your turn. We did not try their slides but judging by what we saw, the slides are only frequented by kids.

7. You can join their free workshops, activities and attend the evening shows.

One of the Dream Cruises highlights is the evening entertainment. There’s usually a magic show or acrobatic performances onboard. At Dream cruise, these shows are held at the Zodiac Theatre on Deck 7. Bookings can be made via their Dream Cruise app. (Do not that the usage of the Dream Cruises app is free of Wi-fi charges.)

In all honesty, I didn’t quite enjoy the shows presented to us. Each show is only 45 minutes long and some parts of it were entertaining and some were not.

As for the workshops and classes, some are complimentary while some require you to pay. The free workshops are popular and they usually get snapped up real first. It’s on a first-come-first-serve basis so you have to arrive about 30 minutes earlier at the location to reserve a spot for yourself. We actually could not take part in some of the workshops because, by the time we reached the venue, it was all fully booked.

Again, it’s all due to the safe distancing measures where they had to keep the group size small. I guess you could say we were utterly disappointed and bored during the trip.

If you want to try out their Rope course, you will also have to queue and wait for your turn. Due to the rain, the attraction wasn’t open for the most part of our trip. Hence, we did not try out the Rope course or the mini-golf.

Another attraction to check out is their Esc Experience Centre which is located on Deck 17. It’s a VR/AR arcade centre and it is equipped with some of the latest gadgets and simulators. However, you will have to pay for the experience. On the last night of the trip, they will usually offer happy hour deal where you can enjoy 2 games at the price of SGD 22.

My Verdict of Dream Cruises

Overall, it was a good getaway for me and my husband but we both did not quite enjoy our trip on board Dream Cruises at all. The long waiting time and queues are the downsides to the whole cruise experience. Service also wasn’t that great idea. I had trouble contacting their reception for help after 8 pm.

When I posted a video of my Dream Cruises experience on TikTok, some of the followers recommended the Royal Caribbean cruise. So we might explore that cruise next time but as for now, we are really hoping to travel across borders soon.

What is a Stateroom on a Cruise Ship and Which is Best?

W hen you start to book a cruise vacation, you’ll have some things to consider. First, you’ll want to choose which cruise line you plan to sail on. Next, you’ll want to look at individual ships, itineraries, and dates. Once you’ve narrowed down the exact sailing, it’s time to choose your stateroom.

What is a stateroom on a cruise ship? A stateroom is like a hotel room, but at sea. While you will hopefully be spending lots of time exploring the ship and out at the various ports of call, you’ll still spend lots of time in your room.

It’s important to not only understand what the different stateroom types are (like balcony, interior, etc ) but also to understand cabin location. Some people find that they have strong performances for the stateroom location, while other people won’t care. Cabin type is important, however.

Here’s the information you’ll need to know about choosing a stateroom, based on your preferences and budget. Keep in mind that every cruise line is a bit different in how it classifies staterooms, so you may need to do a little additional research on your specific cruise line.

Disclosure: We have been on some complimentary cruises and have paid for many of our own. This post contains affiliate links, but a purchase/click-through of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no cost to you. All opinions are my own.

What is a Stateroom on a Cruise Ship and Which One is Best

Types of cruise ship staterooms and differences.

Here are some of the most popular types of cabins. Not every cruise line/cruise ship will have every type of room, so you’ll have to look at the booking details and deck plan to see what is available on your sailing. You can choose your cruise ship cabins during the booking process.

Interior Staterooms: These rooms are often a great deal. They don’t offer balconies or windows, unlike outside cabins. I personally find that I need to have a view of the ocean, even for just the natural light. However, you can definitely save money by choosing an interior room, and they can be a good value.

Porthole Stateroom : This type of stateroom isn’t available on all cruise ships. With a porthole view, you’ll have a round, porthole as a window, rather than floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s no exterior access with this type of room.

Oceanview Stateroom: An oceanview cabin will typically have larger windows than a porthole stateroom. There’s a full view of the ocean, but you won’t be able to go outside from your room in an oceanview cabin without a balcony. Within this stateroom category, there are often obstructed view or partial view rooms, although there’s typically a large window.

Balcony Stateroom : This type of stateroom, also called a verandah stateroom (on Disney Cruise Line), offers a private balcony with access to the outside. Like oceanview rooms, sometimes balcony rooms have obstructed views or larger/smaller balconies. I prefer a balcony room because I really enjoy spending time outside, reading a book and drinking my coffee. While you can save money by choosing a room without a balcony, I personally feel it’s worth it.

Cruise Suite: If you are looking for a more luxurious experience at sea, there are also suites to consider. These can vary from a small junior suite to multi-bedroom suites, depending on the ship. Many cruise suites also come with concierge services, including special happy hours, extra service, and dedicated lounges and sun decks.

Locations of Staterooms

Another consideration is the location of your stateroom. In some cases, you’ll get a choice. If you book a GTY (guaranteed) stateroom, or sail on Virgin Voyages , you won’t have a room location option.

Some people care more about stateroom location than others. So you’ll have to think about your preferences before you book. Options will include the deck (level) as well as the location on the ship – forward, aft, or midship.

On smaller ships, the location doesn’t matter as much. But on larger ships, like the Royal Caribbean Oasis Class (including the Wonder and the Allure ), you’ll really want to make sure you get a location you like.

Often the higher decks are preferable. However, you may not want to be under certain areas of a ship. This would include a busy nightclub, a pool deck, or a smokey casino.

Higher decks do sometimes feel more movement but may be closer to the action. You may want to think about what parts of the ship you going to be in the most, and consider a stateroom that will require the least amount of stairs. Lower decks typically have less movement but do not always have the best view.

In addition to the deck, you’ll want to decide what part of the ship to be in – midship, forward, or aft. Midship is usually the best option if possible. You’ll be in the center of the action and won’t have to walk too far in either direction to get to wherever you are going.

To me, the type of stateroom I book is much more important than the location. I’ve stayed all over cruise ships and have always had a great experience. If your sailing has an option for a guaranteed room, you may be able to save money if you don’t care about location. It can be a great way to save some money on your vacation – that you can use on drinks, specialty dining, or excursions!

You’ll also want to look beyond the deck and location. For this, you’ll need to look at the deck plan for your ship. In general, you want to look to see if you are near an elevator or service area, or are in an area where others can see your balcony from the top decks. These aren’t necessarily deal-breakers (unless you are a very light sleeper), but if you have a choice, it’s good to avoid these cruise staterooms.

General Stateroom Amenities

Before you set sail, you’ll want to see what stateroom amenities are offered. That will make sure you are fully prepared before you get on board.

Some things to look for are hairdryers, outlets, type of closet/space, bed configurations, safes, and bathroom setup. Keep in mind that regardless of what type of stateroom you book, it’s likely to be small. Even the most luxurious staterooms are still small. So don’t overpack and try to bring things that are easy to tuck into small spaces.

You’ll also want to see what the bed configuration is. Is there a king-size bed? A sofa bed? Bunk beds? Know in advance, especially when traveling with your whole family.

Choosing the Best Stateroom

If you’ve never sailed on a cruise ship, you may not know what the best staterooms are. Luckily, there are some resources that you can use to get reviews and learn more about rooms on various ships. One option is to do an internet search or Facebook search for your cruise ship. You may find some reviews of cabins.

Another option is the Cruise Deck Plan database . This website offers images and deck plans for a huge variety of popular cruise lines/cruise ships. You can look for one particular ship and see all the details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you choose your stateroom on a cruise ship?

On most lines, you can, unless you book a guaranteed cabin (GYT). Virgin Voyages, however, doesn’t let you book your room.

Do staterooms have a private bathroom?

Yes, staterooms will have a private bathroom, in every type of cabin.

Is it worth it to have a balcony on a stateroom?

I think it’s absolutely worth it because I typically spend lots of time on the balcony. Having your own private balcony can give you some additional space to spread out. While balcony staterooms do cost more money, I think it’s worth it.

Is there a difference between a cabin and a stateroom on a cruise ship?

No, a cabin and a stateroom are synonymous.

Is stateroom location important?

It can be important if you are concerned about shorter walks and noise levels in your cruise experience.

What is the best cruise ship cabin?

That can vary based on your preferences. I personally prefer a balcony cabin in the middle of the ship.

What is your favorite stateroom location on a cruise ship?

World Dream Balcony Stateroom with Twin Beds (Review)

World dream super seacation cruise to nowhere.

The Balcony Stateroom  on board World Dream is convertible to twin beds upon request. With my booking through KLOOK , this request was not able to be done beforehand, however, the change can be made once on board with a quick and simple call to Housekeeping.

World Dream Balcony Stateroom with Twin Beds

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

World Dream’s Balcony Staterooms are at least 20 square meters big laid out elongated from the corridor to the balcony. These are located from Deck 8 through Deck 15 and are everywhere from forward to aft of the ship. The standard Balcony Stateroom configuration is to have the two beds side by side with the bedding wrapped around both mattresses to form a Queen-size bed together.

After a call to Housekeeping using the cabin phone, the staff came along to start converting my Balcony Stateroom to the twin configuration.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

Here’s the Twin bed configuration in the Balcony Stateroom .

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

The inner single bed from the balcony is pulled slightly away from the outer single bed, and the side table below the charging socket is moved to be placed in between the two single beds, creating a small gap.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

This results in the inner single bed without having a table to place your charging devices on, but they can be placed on the sofa bed’s backrest instead.

Below are information found in other Balcony Stateroom articles for your easy reference.

There is a working table across from the sofa bed where the amenities are.

Coffee and tea making facilities are available on the working table.

Two bottles of mineral water are provided at the start of the cruise, with additional bottles chargeable at S$2 each. However, purchasing new bottles of water really isn’t necessary as the tap water is drinkable so you can just fill up from there.

Masks and menus are provided on the working table.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

The room service menu is more comprehensive now with a Halal section, although you should really proceed to restaurants around the ship for a better dining experience, even at the free ones.

Balcony Stateroom Balcony

The balcony consists of two seats with a side table. Smoking is permitted on the balcony , but remember to close the doors.

Fun fact: The cabin air-conditioning automatically switches off when you open the balcony door. You have to switch the aircon back on again after you return to the cabin from the balcony.

HDMI Cable to TV

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

Taking a tip from The Milelion , I decided to bring my own HDMI cable on board to test if my laptop would connect to the TV.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

The stateroom’s TV has 2 HDMI ports, and HDMI 2 is the most easily accessible from the side.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

After a bit of fumbling around the controls, I’m happy to report that the mirroring works from my laptop to the TV using a 3 meter HDMI cable.

A short 1.5 meter HDMI cable would require you to move stuff around the table in order to place your laptop nearer to the TV.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

Here’s how you connect your laptop to the stateroom’s TV: Like a regular TV at home, change the input to HDMI 2 first. After that, head to “Live TV” and then “Safety Video” .

The mirroring will disconnect if you go to another channel. If the mirroring disconnects, change the input to HDMI 2 while on the selection to “Safety Video” under “Live TV”.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

To make the mirroring full screen, simply click on “Safety Video” as your channel selection.

Balcony Stateroom Toilet and Bathroom

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

While the toilet isn’t as spacious as the Balcony Deluxe Stateroom , everything is very reachable.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

The standing shower is rather spacious to be in. There is also a clothesline (not in picture) at the top of the standing shower to hang your clothes at, right below the exhaust fan, so it’s quite useful for poor man’s steaming and drying your clothes after a shower.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

Toiletries are placed on small shelves by the sink counter and toilet bowl. This is in addition to the 3-in-1 soap readily available in the standing shower.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

Toothbrush sets are placed in a shelf beside the sink.

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

I had the additional amenities readily placed in my toilet which was nice.

Charging Power Sockets

dream cruise balcony deluxe stateroom

By the bed side, there are both USB and 3-pin power sockets available.

Pro-tip: The 3-pin socket charges up your phone and devices faster than the USB socket, so use that if you need a faster day charge. If you are charging your devices overnight, both sockets are fine.

Overall, the Balcony Stateroom  is a great place to be in when retiring from the day on board the World Dream, though I can see that it might get squeezy if you are in a group of 3 or 4 persons. But then again, there’s so many activities to do on board the World Dream that I don’t think you’ll be spending most of the cruise in the room anyway.
