Theme Nights On Cruise Ships (Everything You Need to Know) – Examples

What is a themed night.

A themed night on a cruise ship where guests and staff dress up with a specific theme in mind.

Colour-themed nights are very popular – particularly White Night, which is held on many different cruise lines.

How Do You Find Out In Advance What The Theme Will Be?

Cruise theme nights are included in your cruise fare, but you need to check online to find out what the theme on your cruise might be, so you can pack accordingly.

You can normally find out in advance which themed nights might be held by logging into your online cruise account.

You could join a Facebook “Roll Call” which is a Facebook group specifically for the sailing you are taking. Others already in the group may be able to advise you.

If in doubt – guess! White night parties are very common, followed by 80s and 70s parties. Pack something that you could wear that would fit the theme, just in case!

Here Is What Some Of The Cruise Lines Suggest

Black and White Night, 50’s/60’s/70’s/80’s, Country Western, Masquerade Ball, Toga Parties. These are examples and are subject to change. Royal Caribbean
Every MSC cruise offers themed nights on board, including White Parties, Elegant Nights, Flower Party and more!  Guests are encouraged to bring outfits that go with each of the themed nights. MSC
Gala Evenings follow one of four themes – either Black and White, Red and Gold, Masquerade or Roaring 20s. You’ll find many nods to these themes in the way your ship is decorated, the musical acts performing throughout the night, and in the signature cocktails and dishes available that evening in our bars and restaurants. Pack your best orange outfits and accessories to show off on the dance floor. Wear your wild wigs, giant hats, boas and bowties—whatever you want, as long as it’s orange!  Holland America Line

It Sounds Like Disney May Have Had Problems With Themed Nights In The Past…

During themed cruises and onboard celebrations like Pirate Night, Guests are invited to dress in costume. We value safety and good judgment and ask Guests to choose costumes that are family friendly, not obstructive, objectionable, offensive or violent. To avoid any disappointment or delay in the boarding process, please refrain from bringing toys or props that resemble guns, knives or other related implements. Disney Cruise Line

Do You Have To Get Involved In Themed Night Parties?

Not at all, joining in is completely voluntary. If dressing up isn’t your thing, there is no need to do it!

Can I Hire Themed Clothing Onboard?

The only cruise line that advertises clothing hire is Cunard.

Gentlemen can hire tuxedos including shirts, trousers and dinner jackets on board from the shops – these are to wear on their “Gala Nights,” not themed nights as such.

Tuxedo packages range from $90 for one night up to $250 for 5 nights.

They don’t hire any sort of clothing hire for ladies, suggesting instead that they buy something from one of the onboard shops.

I took a cruise on the last Ocean Liner, Cunards Queen Mary 2. Cunard has very strict dress codes. Find out what I thought of that here:

What Is a White Night on a Cruise Ship?

By Michael Ferguson

A white night on a cruise ship is an event that takes place once a month, or every few months, depending on the cruise line. It is a night of celebration, entertainment, and a chance for passengers to mingle with each other in an exciting atmosphere.

The night often includes live music, dancing, food and drinks specials, and games. At some cruises, during the white night event there are also special discounts on certain items or services.

The term “white night” originates from the fact that many people choose to dress in all-white garments for the evening. This is done to create a festive atmosphere and show solidarity among the passengers. Many people find that dressing in white gives them a sense of unity with their fellow passengers and allows them to feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves.

The white night events usually begin early in the evening and last until late at night. These nights are typically filled with music from different genres such as jazz, blues, pop, rock, country and more. There is often a live band playing throughout the evening as well as DJs who spin a variety of music for everyone to enjoy.

In addition to live music and entertainment, many cruises also offer special deals during their white night events. These may include discounts on drinks or food items or even freebies such as t-shirts or souvenirs. Passengers can also take advantage of activities such as karaoke nights or trivia nights that are held on board.

White nights on cruise ships provide an exciting atmosphere for passengers to celebrate and have fun together. The all-white dress code helps create a sense of unity among passengers while they enjoy live music performances and take advantage of special discounts and activities. White nights can be enjoyed by all ages and provide an unforgettable experience on any voyage.

Attending a white night party on a cruise ship is an exciting opportunity to get dressed up and have some fun with your fellow travelers. If you aren’t sure what to wear to a white party at sea, you have come to the right place.

The quick answer is: wear white or light-colored party attire that’s appropriate for a fun yet classy event . Formal white dresses or pantsuits for women and a white button-down or polo for men are great options.

In this comprehensive guide, we will cover everything you need to know about dressing for white night on a cruise, including specific outfit suggestions for men and women that meet venue requirements while still allowing you to express your personal style.

What is White Night on a Cruise?

White Night on a cruise is an exciting event that takes place during certain nights on a cruise ship. It is a themed party where passengers are encouraged to dress in all-white attire and enjoy a night of fun and entertainment.

The concept of White Night has become increasingly popular in recent years, and many cruise lines now incorporate this event into their itineraries as a highlight of the voyage.

The Concept of a White Party

The concept of a white party originated in the fashion industry, where it was seen as a chic and elegant way to celebrate special occasions. The idea is to create a visually stunning atmosphere by having everyone dressed in white from head to toe.

White parties are known for their glamorous and sophisticated ambiance, making them a perfect fit for a cruise ship setting.

White parties have gained popularity not only in the fashion world but also in social events and entertainment. They are often associated with luxury and exclusivity, and attending a white party on a cruise ship adds an extra touch of glamour to the experience.

White Night on Cruises

White Night on cruises typically takes place on a designated night during the voyage. Passengers are encouraged to dress in white attire, including white dresses, suits, and accessories. The cruise ship’s staff also participates by wearing white uniforms or themed costumes.

The White Night event on a cruise ship is much more than just a dress code. It is a celebration that includes special activities and entertainment tailored to the occasion. Passengers can expect live music, dancing, themed decorations, and even fireworks in some cases.

The atmosphere is lively and festive, creating a memorable experience for all guests on board.

White Night on a cruise provides an opportunity for passengers to socialize, relax, and enjoy the company of fellow travelers in a unique and glamorous setting. It allows guests to immerse themselves in the spirit of the event and create lasting memories of their cruise vacation.

If you’re planning to attend a White Night on a cruise, make sure to pack your best white outfit and get ready to have a great time! It’s a fantastic opportunity to dress up, let loose, and enjoy the magic of cruising.

White Night Dress Codes

Typical formality level.

White Night on a cruise is an exciting event where passengers come together to celebrate and enjoy a night of elegance and glamour. The dress code for White Night can vary depending on the cruise line and the specific ship.

However, in most cases, the dress code for White Night falls somewhere between semi-formal and formal attire.

For women, a typical White Night dress code may include elegant cocktail dresses or long gowns in white or light colors. It’s a great opportunity to showcase your style and sophistication. Pair your dress with matching accessories and don’t forget to bring a light wrap or shawl in case it gets chilly on the deck.

For men, a White Night dress code often calls for a suit or a tuxedo in white or light colors. A crisp white shirt, a bowtie or a regular tie, and polished dress shoes complete the elegant look. Remember, attention to detail is key, so make sure your outfit is well-fitted and tailored to perfection.

Rules and Restrictions

While White Night is a fun and festive event, there are usually some rules and restrictions that passengers need to follow. These rules ensure that everyone can enjoy the evening without any issues or inconveniences.

One common rule is that guests are required to wear white or light-colored attire. This is to create a cohesive and visually stunning atmosphere on the deck, where everyone is dressed in harmony. It’s best to avoid wearing dark colors or patterns that may disrupt the overall aesthetic of the event.

Additionally, some cruise lines may have specific guidelines regarding footwear. For safety reasons, they may require guests to wear closed-toe shoes or formal sandals instead of flip-flops or casual beach footwear.

It’s always a good idea to check the dress code guidelines provided by your cruise line before packing for your trip.

What Women Should Wear

White cocktail dresses.

White cocktail dresses are a popular choice for women attending White Night on a cruise. They are elegant, stylish, and perfect for a night of dancing and socializing. Whether you prefer a classic A-line silhouette or a more form-fitting sheath dress, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Pair your dress with strappy heels and some statement jewelry to complete the look.

White Pantsuits

If you’re looking for a chic and sophisticated outfit for White Night, consider wearing a white pantsuit. Pantsuits are not only fashionable but also offer comfort and versatility. You can opt for a tailored blazer and trousers combination or go for a jumpsuit-style pantsuit.

Complete the ensemble with a pair of stylish pumps and a clutch bag.

White Jumpsuits

For a trendy and modern look, white jumpsuits are a great choice for White Night. Jumpsuits are effortlessly stylish and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Choose a jumpsuit with a flattering cut and pair it with some statement jewelry and a pair of heels.

You’ll be sure to turn heads as you dance the night away on the cruise.

Accessorizing Your Outfit

When it comes to accessorizing your White Night outfit, there are a few key things to keep in mind. Firstly, consider the neckline of your dress or jumpsuit and choose a necklace that complements it. If your outfit is more minimalistic, you can opt for a bold statement necklace to add some drama.

Secondly, don’t forget about your shoes and handbag. Choose a pair of shoes that are comfortable for dancing and a clutch or small handbag that complements your outfit. Lastly, consider adding some sparkle with earrings or bracelets to complete your look.

What Men Should Wear

White Night on a cruise is a special event that calls for a certain dress code. Men should aim for a crisp and polished look that complements the elegant atmosphere of the evening. Here are some key items to consider when deciding what to wear:

White Button Downs

A classic white button-down shirt is a must-have for any gentleman attending White Night on a cruise. It exudes sophistication and pairs well with different bottoms. Opt for a well-fitted shirt made from high-quality fabric to ensure a sharp and tailored appearance.

This versatile piece can be dressed up with a blazer or dressed down with a pair of white pants.

White Polos, Tees or Henleys

If you prefer a more relaxed and casual look, a white polo, tee, or henley is a great choice. These options are comfortable and stylish, allowing you to feel at ease while still looking polished. Pair your white top with either white pants for a monochromatic look or with navy or beige shorts for a more nautical vibe.

White Pants

White pants are a staple for White Night on a cruise. They add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any outfit. Opt for a pair made from a breathable and lightweight fabric, such as linen or cotton, to keep you comfortable throughout the evening.

Remember to choose a well-fitted style that flatters your body shape and complements the rest of your ensemble.

Ties and Jackets

For those who want to take their attire to the next level, adding a tie and jacket can elevate your look. A white tie paired with a navy blazer creates a timeless and refined outfit. Alternatively, a white jacket paired with darker pants can make a bold fashion statement.

Experiment with different combinations to find the one that best suits your personal style.

Remember, the key to dressing for White Night on a cruise is to embrace the theme and have fun with your outfit. Whether you opt for a classic and traditional look or a more contemporary ensemble, confidence is the ultimate accessory.

Shoes, Bags and Accessories

Footwear options for women.

When it comes to choosing the right shoes for White Night on a cruise, women have a variety of options to consider. For a more formal look, opt for elegant heels or strappy sandals that will complement your evening attire.

If you prefer a more comfortable option, a pair of stylish flats or wedges can be a great choice. Don’t forget to consider the comfort and support of your shoes, as you’ll be dancing and exploring the ship throughout the night.

It’s also important to choose a bag that matches your outfit and is practical enough to carry your essentials. A small clutch or crossbody bag can be a stylish choice, allowing you to keep your hands free while enjoying the festivities.

Consider a bag with enough room for your phone, wallet, and any other items you might need.

Footwear Options for Men

Men, too, have plenty of options when it comes to footwear for White Night on a cruise. A classic pair of dress shoes, such as oxfords or loafers, can elevate any outfit and give a polished look. Opt for a comfortable pair that will allow you to dance the night away without any discomfort.

For a more casual look, men can consider wearing boat shoes or stylish sneakers that will still look sharp while providing comfort. Remember to choose a pair that matches the overall style and formality of your outfit.

Completing Your Look

In addition to shoes and bags, accessories play a crucial role in completing your White Night look. For women, consider adding some statement jewelry, such as a bold necklace or chandelier earrings, to add a touch of glamour. A stylish hat or hair accessory can also enhance your overall look.

For men, accessories like a stylish watch, cufflinks, or a pocket square can add a sophisticated touch to your outfit. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different accessories to create a unique and personalized look.

Remember, White Night on a cruise is all about dressing up and enjoying the festivities. So, have fun with your outfit choices, express your personal style, and get ready to dance the night away!

Attending white night on a cruise is the perfect opportunity to participate in a fun shipboard tradition. By following the event dress code and wearing light colors or white, you can look stylish while enjoying an evening of dining, dancing, and celebrating with new friends.

Just remember the key rules around formality levels and restrictions when planning your white night cruise outfit. With the recommendations above for flattering white dresses, jumpsuits, button-downs and more, you will shine bright alongside your fellow well-dressed passengers!

Packing Tips for Norwegian's Theme Nights

Packing Tips for Norwegian's Themed Nights

It's amazing to think of all the esteemed awards Norwegian Cruise Line has won throughout the years, including being cited as the World's Leading Cruise Line. Here's another accolade that should grab your attention: best nightlife. Norwegian guests know how to party. We all know it's easy to show up at any celebration or event in life, but wouldn't you rather look the part and get in on the action? Let's have some fun Norwegian style . Check out the inside scoop on what you need to pack for some of the hottest parties at sea.

Ready to start planning? Explore all Norwegian cruises .

Dancing Under the Stars

As any good cowboy would tell you, there's nothing quite like being out underneath the vast night sky filled with twinkling stars — unless you're on the ocean waters, of course. Norwegian invites you to go dancing under the stars on its Nashville Nights & Lights party on board Norwegian Bliss , where entertainment is provided by a DJ and a live band from none other than the Music City itself. What should you pack for this boot-scootin' party? Denim, a checkered shirt, and a bandana, along with your cowboy hat and boots, and you'll be in the country and Western groove.

Latin Night

If you've been lucky enough to attend a performance of Burn the Floor on the Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, or Norwegian Epic, you know how hot and steamy a Latin night can be. What to pack? Women will sizzle in red, and a dress with movement will get you extra points. Don't forget those sexy high heels you've got hidden in the back of your closet. And for men? It's better to be a little more polished with your clothes than not — dark jeans or slacks, a polo, or a collared shirt. Topping off the look with a cool fedora should do the trick.

Channel your inner John Travolta or Donna Summer during this free-flowing night dedicated to the Generation X era. What do you pack for this retro flashback? You may want to hit the back of your closet again for this one, the very back — or maybe a secondhand store. Here's the skinny: Wide bell-bottoms, embroidered vests, and "hippie" clothes for women would be fab, while disco shirts and those awesome leisure suits would be sweet for men. You get bonus points if you learn the Stayin' Alive or YMCA dance moves before going on your cruise vacation .

When you realize the night is always still young! #CruiseMoments #CruiseNorwegian A post shared by Norwegian Cruise Line (@norwegiancruiseline) on Mar 30, 2018 at 4:34pm PDT

Yuppies, unite. Now that you've danced the night away to the '70s, you can Cabbage Patch or Moonwalk your way into the '80s. Either way, you'll be doing The Running Man in no time. The '80s had some wild clothing styles, so the crazier, the better. Think leg warmers, shoulder pads, and neon colors topped off with fingerless gloves for women. What about the totally rad mesh T-shirts and parachute pants for men? A must before cruising? You'll need to review and memorize the Thriller dance moves.

White Hot Party

The signature Norwegian Cruise Line White Hot Party will easily be one of the most attended parties during your cruise. Why? It could be because it's such a simple concept: Wear all-white clothing, and you're good to go. Or maybe it's because the DJs are spinning some of the trendiest club music around. This iconic party idea originated in France more than 50 years ago as a fundraiser, and it's still white hot today. Fashion tip for women? Wear skin tone unmentionables underneath your white clothing so they won't show. For men? It's time to wear those white sneakers.

The days are hot, the nights are steamy! #NorwegianBLISS takes Miami. A post shared by Norwegian Cruise Line (@norwegiancruiseline) on May 9, 2018 at 8:29pm PDT

Whether you're a first-time cruise guest or an Ambassador Latitudes Rewards Member, feel free to party it up on board Norwegian Cruise Line. After all, you're on vacation. Where do all the themed night parties take place? Many of these events are held at Spice H20, an adults-only venue by day, turned hip oceanfront club at night. When you enter this space, you'll find an open-air dance floor, a giant TV screen, and plenty of cozy seating areas. You'll discover an inviting bar area, hot tubs, and grotto-style waterfalls for cooling off, plus amazing ocean views. Other parties take place on the top deck. Just be sure to check your daily for more information.

It's important to mention that you don't have to attend any party or do anything you basically don't want to do on a cruise ship. Feel free to do what you want, when you want — that's the beauty of Freestyle Cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line. Why? The experience is all about you. It's your vacation, your way. Don't worry about learning those Michael Jackson dance moves — unless you want to, of course. Enjoy your cruise vacation however you want. And after all, you still need enough room in your suitcase to bring home souvenirs, so leave that sequin glove at home.

The Best Cruise Ship Theme Parties and Where to Find Them

Cruise ship deck party

Carnival Cruises:

  • Carnival Cruises is known for its signature 80s Rock'n'Glow Deck Party.
  • They also have a Caribbean-themed party known as a Mega Deck Party on longer itineraries.
  • White Hot Parties are also held on some itineraries where everyone wears white.
  • The ships Vista and Horizon are said to have a Latin dance party known as Amor Cubano.
  • Carnival also has a formal night. It has been a while since I have been on one of “The Fun Ships”, but I seem to remember them being a bit stricter about the dress code than a lot of their competitor cruise lines. Guests who were not dressed more formally on elegant nights would be denied seating in the main dining rooms and forced to eat at the buffet. Cruises six days or longer usually have two Cruise Elegant evenings.

Celebrity Cruises

  • A '60s party,
  • a Motown party,
  • a Latin party called Sizzle,
  • a rock masquerade entitled Masque,
  • And a silent disco. (They seem to be the only cruise line that does this, which is quite surprising considering the noise complaints we used to get on party nights when I worked in the guest services department of one of their competitors.)
  • White Hot Parties are also held on some itineraries where everyone wears white.
  • Their formal night has been rebranded as “evening chic” which is supposed to be less formal than formal, but smarter than smart casual.

Costa Cruises

  • Costa cruises are also said to have a white night and a 70s party.
  • Some itineraries also feature a black & red night and a masquerade party.

Disney Cruise Line

  • Disney Cruise Line is known for its Pirates of the Caribbean Deck Party complete with a fireworks display. (And let me tell you, pyrotechnics on a cruise ship with loads of kids on board? That sounds like a logistical and safety nightmare! ...But also, probably a lot of fun.)
  • The Disney Wonder is also said to have a Pixar Pals Party,  while the Disney Wonder and Disney Magic have a Frozen Party.
  • Each cruise also has an optional “Dress-up night” (where you are encouraged to dress in formal attire, not pirate attire - just to clarify what they mean by “dressing up”).

MSC Cruises

  • White parties are also common on MSC cruises.
  • Other theme parties include a Tropical Party,  a Flower Glory Party  (A 70s party), a Carnival party (themed around Brazillian carnivals and not MSC's competitor)  and a Space Party (I would like to experience that one).
  • Cruises longer than seven days have two formal nights, often referred to as Gala Nights.

Norwegian Cruise Line

  • Norwegian’s Mega ships (Breakaway class or bigger) are known for their Glow parties where guests are encouraged to wear neon colours.
  • On the smaller ships, they used to have White Hot Parties where guests were encouraged to wear all white. They have now (updated 2023) done away with the White Hot Party and the Glow Party has become the signature party fleetwide. You won't look out of place in white but pack your neon too.
  • Other theme nights you may find on an NCL ship (dependent on the length of cruise and itinerary) include Latin night, Caribbean Night, a 50s & 60s sock hop, 70s night, 80s night, a country hoedown and a Latin dance party.
  • There will be at least one “Dress up or not night” per cruise, with the possibility of more on longer itineraries.

P&O Cruises

  • P&O is known for a Bianco party, their version of the White Party,  as well as a Nero party, the antithesis of a white party where everyone wears black. Way to shake things up, P&O!
  • They are also rumoured to have a Back to School Party.
  • P&O seems to be most well known for its Gatsby Party. From what I understand, this overlaps their signature party and their formal night. Apparently, they do 1920s dance classes and sequinned headband-making craft sessions in preparation for it.

Royal Caribbean:

  • A 70s night or 'Disco Inferno' is also a common theme night on Royal Caribbean, but they seem to have replaced the 70s party with a 90s party on The Harmony of the Seas.
  • They also host a Red Party on the Harmony of the Seas, a high-energy party with DJs, surprise performances, special effects and technology.
  • Some of the other parties you may experience on Royal Caribbean include a Black & White Night, a 50s, 60’s or 80’s party or a Country Western party.
  • Toga parties and Caribbean parties (dependant on the itinerary) also happen on occasion.
  • Sometimes on Royal Caribbean, the formal night is replaced with a masquerade ball (pre-pandemic these masks covered your eyes not your mouth but that may have changed). Cruises that are seven days long or longer usually have two formal nights, the first one being a bigger deal than the second.  (Formal attire is recommended but not mandatory.)

Virgin Voyages:

  • Virgin Voyages obviously does things differently. They have swopped out the white night for a red night or ‘Scarlet Night’ which is said to feature art installations and performances throughout the ship. It’s less a party and more a ship-wide activation.
  • It may also be the only cruise line that doesn’t do a formal night.
  • Apparently, the spa is also the location of a spa party complete with DJs.

Additional Parties

  • In addition to this, Sailaway parties are standard on most cruise lines
  • Halloween, New Year's Eve and Christmas have their own theme parties
  • If you’re sailing off the coast of the USA, you can also look forward to parties that commemorate the Super Bowl, the 4th of July and St. Patrick's Day.
  • If you cross the equator, there's also a party for that.

What will the theme nights be?

Theme nights are offered onboard Royal Caribbean Cruises of four nights or longer. Because these events vary by ship and itinerary, dates and times will not be available until you board the ship and this can be found in the Cruise Compass. Some common themes we may offer include Black and White Night, 50's/60's/70's/80's, Country Western, Masquerade Ball, Toga Parties. These are examples and are subject to change.

What to Wear on a Cruise: Daytime, Formal Nights & More

W hen it comes to cruising in style, packing the right attire for every occasion is essential. Including a few key versatile items on your cruise packing list will prevent your suitcase (and the limited closet space in your stateroom) from becoming overcrowded – and keep you looking appropriate for all events.

Although most cruise lines outline their suggested dress codes in the FAQ sections of their websites, be sure to also review the specifics of your cruise itinerary. Not only will the destination and weather factor into what you should wear on your cruise, but you'll also want to know if formal nights require black-tie attire, themed dress parties need costumes or shore excursions necessitate unique clothing or footwear.

Whether you'll be lounging by the pool or attending a glamorous dinner, our list of must-have items and suggestions from industry experts will help you navigate dressing for your next cruise vacation.

For relaxing sea days, prioritize comfort above all else. Depending on your planned activities, any of the following casual options are considered acceptable attire:

  • Skirts or skorts
  • T-shirts and tank tops
  • Breezy lounge pants
  • Bathing suits
  • Cover-ups
  • Sun hats or baseball caps

Travel writer Jill Schildhouse always packs her VOTEPRETTY sundress . "This is my go-to cruise workhorse," says Schildhouse. "It's light and breezy, and the pockets come in very handy." She adds that the sundress can be worn to casual dinners on the ship or on shore excursions, and it can even double as a swimsuit cover-up. "I've taken it all over the world and it always arrives wrinkle-free," she says. Schildhouse has received many compliments on this classic sundress, which is available in multiple colors.

Sheri Griffiths, host of YouTube series CruiseTipsTV , suggests wearing comfortable, broken-in shoes on a cruise. She recommends avoiding brand-new footwear during your voyage to prevent blisters and daily discomfort. A basic sneaker can be worn for just about any cruise itinerary, from Alaska to the Caribbean . Griffiths says, "We love these Adidas Stan Smiths because they wear in quickly and have a timeless style."

In the evening, most cruise ships adopt a dress code in their main dining rooms and specialty restaurants that incorporate smart-casual or resort-wear attire. The following clothing choices will suffice:

  • Maxi dresses
  • Elegant tops
  • Long- or short-sleeved button-down shirts
  • Polo shirts
  • Blazers and ties (typically optional, unless otherwise stated)
  • Shawls or wraps
  • Closed-toe dress shoes
  • Sandals or heels

Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, shares her best advice for cruise footwear. "I always pack my Rothy's shoes for any cruise because they're infinitely comfortable, work as both a formal and [an] informal shoe and can be tossed in the laundry if they get dirty." She notes that she has several pairs, but two of her go-to styles are The Point and The Ballet Flat . McDaniel adds that the shoes work in every occasion, from strolling along the ship decks to perusing cobblestone streets on shore. "I bought both [pairs] 5 years ago, and they look as new today as they did out of the box despite literally hundreds of hours of wear," she says.

Jason Leppert, founder of YouTube channel Popular Cruising , always packs his signature Hawaiian shirts to wear day or night. He says, "I love the RSVLTS collection because they can play casually with shorts or more dressy with slacks for dinner."

Formal Nights

While more casual these days, cruise formal nights still call for a bit more sophistication and style. Appropriate options include:

  • Cocktail dresses
  • Evening gowns
  • Dress shoes

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer for The Points Guy, always packs a gown or a fancy cocktail dress for a formal night. "I work from home and don't have a reason to dress up otherwise, so I look forward to it." Still, Kosciolek is a firm believer that travelers should wear what is most comfortable for them while on vacation. She adds, "My dinner won't taste any better or worse based on what others are wearing."

Mikkel Woodruff, editor of cruise site Sometimes Sailing , always brings her Omega Sailing Bracelet on cruises. She says, "I like to bring jewelry that reminds me of the ocean and being on the sea." Woodruff appreciates the bracelet's versatility, noting how easily it can go from shore excursions to formal evenings to everyday activities.

Shore Excursions

When heading off the ship for a shore excursion, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear to make the most of your adventures on land. Consider packing the following items:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Mesh water shoes
  • T-shirts or tank tops
  • A waterproof jacket

Freelance travel writer David Swanson shares his favorite versatile cruise shoes. He discovered a comfortable pair of Danner multitasking shoes that worked for dinners, casual events and multiple days of cycling on a recent European cruise. "I didn't think I'd find something to do dual duty, but I love this comfy pair from Danner, an outdoor brand [that is] new to me but has been around since 1932," says Swanson.

Paul Thornton, host of The Joy of Cruising Podcast , always packs his Coofandy linen shirts and shorts for hot Caribbean days and breezy cruise ship evenings. "I love Coofandy because they enable this senior to look 'youthful' on the beach and excursions," says Thornton. He adds that the brand is also his go-to retailer for White Party-themed nights on board.

Cruise Line Dress Codes

Dress codes can vary significantly from one cruise company to the next, so it's a good idea to check with your specific line before filling up your suitcase. Once you're on board, be sure to read the daily program for reminders about the dress codes required at the events and dining venues during your voyage.

Azamara Dress Code

  • Daytime: Fairly casual attire is suitable throughout Azamara 's ships during the day. However, baseball caps, distressed denim, tank tops and bathing suits cannot be worn at Discoveries, Aqualina and Prime C restaurants (and shoes are required).
  • Evening: At night, women typically wear casual dresses, skirts, pants, capris, blouses and knit tops, while men are welcome to wear collared golf and polo shirts, shorts and pants. Sport coats are optional. Note: There are no official formal nights on Azamara's voyages.
  • Themed Nights: Be sure to pack an all-white outfit for Azamara's signature White Night dinner and deck party.

Carnival Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Pack casual, comfortable attire to sail with Carnival Cruise Line , such as T-shirts, polo shirts or relaxed tops paired with shorts, capris, khakis or jeans. Athletic wear paired with a lightweight sweater or jacket are suitable for those looking to stay active.

Evening: After 5:30 p.m., attire ranges from "cruise casual" to "cruise elegant."

  • "Cruise casual" attire for men typically suggests longer dress shorts, pants or jeans and a collared polo shirt. Women usually wear sundresses, blouses, skirts, dress shorts and capri pants.
  • "Cruise elegant" typically translates to dress slacks, dress shirts and sports coats (suggested) for men, with some wearing suits, ties or tuxedos. Women choose dresses (party or cocktail), pantsuits and elegant skirts with blouses, while some may wear evening gowns. Kids should follow the adult dress code, opting for school dance- or party-appropriate attire. Note: Jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, shorts, T-shirts, sportswear, exercise clothes, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suits are not permitted. The number of "cruise elegant" evenings varies based on the length of the cruise.

Themed Nights:

  • Carnival Journeys cruises feature a "Throwback Sea Day," where guests can relive the '80s by day (outfits included) and dress up for a themed Captain's Cocktail Party by night.
  • Cruises between early December and Christmas Day feature an "Ugly Sweater Contest."
  • Costumes are suggested for Halloween cruises between the end of September and October. However, when choosing a costume, keep in mind that full masks are prohibited (masks covering half of the face are allowed).

Celebrity Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, smart casual resort wear is suitable throughout Celebrity Cruises ' ships. (Think: sundresses, shorts, polos and button-down shirts paired with sandals, low heels and loafers.) Bathing suits with cover-ups, T-shirts, tank tops, hats and sunglasses are only appropriate poolside. Cruisers should avoid wearing these items in the dining areas.
  • Evening: Most evenings, guests are expected to wear comfortable yet tasteful attire. This entails dresses, skirts, long pants or jeans, stylish tops and button-down shirts. Shorts and flip-flops do not meet the evening dress code. Depending on your voyage, there will be one or two formal nights that require "evening chic" wear. Passengers can dress to impress in formal gowns, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, dressy jeans or blazers.

Costa Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, Costa Cruises ' passengers may wear casual clothing like T-shirts, shorts and sundresses. Beach clothing and flip-flops are not permitted in ship restaurants. Depending on the itinerary, some shore excursions may have specific dress codes.
  • Evening: Most nights require resort attire; however, Costa hosts one or two Elegant Evenings per cruise, when men may wear dark suits or tuxedos and women can wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses.
  • Themed Nights: Costa recommends that guests pack white clothing for its White Night events and white, red and green clothing and accessories for its Italy-themed evenings.

  • Evening: In the evenings, passengers are asked to wear smart attire, which includes dress shirts and trousers for men, and cocktail dresses or sophisticated tops and skirts for women – similar to what you'd choose for dinner at a trendy restaurant or a special occasion. Voyages lasting seven nights host at least two Gala Evenings, during which guests are requested to adhere to a more formal dress code.
  • Themed Nights: Gala Evenings employ themes ranging from specific colors (such as black and white or red and gold outfits) to the roaring '20s to masquerade balls.

Disney Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: On Disney Cruise Line sailings, cruise casual attire is acceptable during the day; outfit options include sundresses and shorts and tees. Swimwear and tank tops are not permitted in dining venues.
  • Evening: After the sun sets, polished attire like collared shirts and jeans without rips are acceptable. Bathing suits, tees, tank tops and sports attire are not allowed. Adult-exclusive dining venues on Disney ships call for elegance; formal or semiformal wear is recommended.
  • Themed Nights: On three- and four-night sailings, there is typically a pirate-themed deck party and one optional dress-up night for guests of all ages. Sailings lasting seven nights or longer add one formal and one semiformal night, when women may wear a formal dress or pantsuit and men can opt for a suit or dress pants with a jacket.

Holland America Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Plan on wearing casual attire aboard Holland America Line 's ships during the day. When indoors, guests must wear shirts, cover-ups and footwear.
  • Evening: On most nights, smart casual clothing is acceptable. However, in table service restaurants, shorts, bathing suits, distressed jeans and tank tops are prohibited. Grand Voyages cruises host formal nights, when suits and dresses are appropriate.

  • Evening: In Norwegian's upscale specialty restaurants, smart casual attire is the norm. Women can wear slacks, jeans, dresses, skirts and tops, while men should opt for jeans or slacks, a collared shirt and closed-toed shoes. Children ages 12 and younger may wear shorts in all restaurants. On each cruise, there is one particular "Dress-Up or Not Night," when guests can wear fancier clothing (if they choose).
  • Themed Nights: Pack an all-white outfit for the White Hot Party and formal attire for Norwegian's Night Out.

These parties create a festive atmosphere, allowing people to let loose, socialize, and have fun. They also help passengers connect with the onboard community by providing a shared interest or theme to bond over.

Common theme party activities include costume contests, live performances, dance-offs, themed food and drinks, and interactive games. These activities are designed to immerse passengers in the theme and create a vibrant and engaging environment for everyone onboard.

Popular Types of Cruise Ship Theme Parties

Formal theme parties.

Formal theme parties are a common occurrence on cruise ships. These parties often take place on elegant nights, where passengers are encouraged to dress up in formal attire. The theme could range from a classic black and white ball to a masquerade party. Formal theme parties provide an opportunity for passengers to showcase their style and elegance while enjoying a sophisticated evening of music and dancing.

Cultural Theme Parties

Cultural theme parties celebrate different cultures from around the world. From the roaring 20s to the disco era of the 70s, these parties are a blast from the past. Passengers can get creative with their outfits and enjoy the nostalgia of a bygone era. The Ultimate Guide To Cruise Ship Theme Parties

Steps to Planning for Cruise Ship Theme Parties

To make the most of cruise ship theme parties, it’s important to plan ahead and be prepared. Here are some steps to help you get ready for the festivities.

Understanding Theme Party Schedule

Check the cruise ship’s daily newsletter or online portal to find out the schedule of theme parties during your voyage. Note down the dates, times, and themes of each party. This will help you plan your outfits and activities accordingly.

Planning Your Outfits

Once you know the themes of the parties, start brainstorming ideas for your outfits. Research online for inspiration and get creative with your costume choices. Make sure to pack all the necessary items, including accessories and props, to fully immerse yourself in the theme.

Participating in Activities

Take part in the activities and games organized during the theme parties. Whether it’s a dance-off, trivia quiz, or a talent show, these activities are designed to engage passengers and add to the overall fun and entertainment. Don’t be shy and join in the excitement – you might even win a prize or make new friends along the way.

How to Choose A Suitable Outfit for A Theme Party

Choosing the right outfit for a cruise ship theme party is crucial to fully enjoy and participate in the festivities. Here are some tips to help you select the perfect attire for any theme party.

Adhering to Theme and Dress Code

Make sure your outfit aligns with the theme of the party. For example, if it’s a Hawaiian Luau party, opt for a floral shirt or a grass skirt. Also, check if there are any specific dress code requirements for the party. Some parties may have formal or semi-formal dress codes, while others may require more casual or costume-like attire.

Comfortable and Appropriate Clothing

While it’s important to dress according to the theme, always prioritize comfort and appropriateness. Consider the weather, the type of activities involved, and the comfort level of your outfit. You don’t want to be in an uncomfortable costume all night or risk being underdressed in inappropriate clothing.

Accessorizing for a Theme Party

Accessories can take your theme party outfit to the next level. Choose accessories that complement your costume and enhance the overall look. Wigs, hats, jewelry, and props can add that extra touch of authenticity and fun to your ensemble. However, make sure your accessories are safe and won’t obstruct movement or cause any inconvenience during the party.

The Ultimate Guide To Cruise Ship Theme Parties

Maximizing Fun at Cruise Ship Theme Parties

To fully enjoy cruise ship theme parties, it’s important to immerse yourself in the party spirit and engage with fellow cruisers. Here are some tips to help you make the most of these festivities.

Getting In the Party Spirit

Before attending a theme party, get yourself in the party mood. Listen to music related to the theme, watch movies or shows that align with the party theme, or even read books or articles to familiarize yourself with the party’s cultural or historical references. This will help you feel more connected to the theme and enhance your overall experience.

Engaging with Fellow Cruisers

Cruise ship theme parties provide an excellent opportunity to socialize and meet new people. Strike up conversations with fellow cruisers who are also enthusiastic about the theme. Compliment their outfits, share your excitement about the party, and exchange stories or experiences related to the theme. Engaging with others will not only make the party more enjoyable but also create lasting memories and friendships.

Taking Part in Games and Theme Activities

Don’t be a wallflower at theme parties; actively participate in the games and activities organized. Whether it’s a dance competition, costume contest, or trivia quiz, take part and have fun. These activities are designed to bring people together and create a lively and interactive atmosphere. Even if you’re not the most outgoing person, challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone and embrace the opportunity to have a great time.

Tips for Family Friendly Cruise Ship Theme Parties

Cruise ship theme parties are not just for adults – they can be a fun and memorable experience for the whole family. Here are some tips to ensure that theme parties are family-friendly and enjoyable for everyone.

Choosing Family Appropriate Themes

When selecting theme parties to attend as a family, make sure the themes are suitable for all ages. Avoid parties that may have adult-oriented themes or activities. Look for themes like pirate night, superhero party, or Disney character night that cater to different age groups and interests.

Dressing Children for Theme Parties

Involve your children in choosing their outfits for theme parties. Let them express their creativity and imagination when selecting costumes. Make sure their outfits are comfortable and safe for them to move around in. Additionally, consider practicality – choose costumes that are easy to put on and take off, especially for younger children who may need to use the restroom more frequently.

Ensuring Safety and Comfort for Kids

While attending theme parties, ensure the safety and comfort of your children. Keep an eye on them during crowded events and make sure they stay within your sight. Dress them in breathable fabrics and provide appropriate footwear to prevent discomfort or potential injuries. Remember to bring any necessary items such as snacks, water, or entertainment to keep them occupied during the party.

Sharing Experiences and Suggestions

After participating in a theme party, share your experiences and suggestions with the cruise line or fellow passengers. While cruise ship theme parties are generally enjoyable, issues can arise that may require troubleshooting. Here are some common problems and their solutions:

Dealing with Unplanned Situations

In the event of a sudden change in schedule or cancellation of a theme party, stay calm and flexible. Cruise lines may have valid reasons for making changes, such as weather conditions or technical difficulties. Look for alternative activities or parties that are still taking place and embrace the opportunity to try something different. Remember, the cruise line’s priority is to ensure the safety and satisfaction of passengers.

Addressing Dress Code Difficulties

If you encounter difficulties with the dress code for a theme party, seek assistance from the cruise ship’s staff. They can provide guidance on appropriate attire or offer alternatives if you don’t have the necessary clothing. It’s important to respect the dress code to maintain the integrity of the theme party and create a cohesive and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees.

Solving Socialization Concerns at Parties

If you’re feeling apprehensive about socializing at theme parties, remember that most passengers are in the same boat. Start by observing what others are doing, join group activities or games, or strike up conversations with people who seem friendly or approachable. Chances are, many fellow cruisers are also looking to make connections and have a good time. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and enjoy the party to the fullest.

In conclusion, cruise ship theme parties are a fantastic way to enhance your cruise experience and create lasting memories. Whether it’s a formal ball, a cultural celebration, or a holiday extravaganza, these parties offer something for everyone. By planning ahead, choosing suitable outfits, and actively participating in the festivities, you can maximize the fun and enjoyment of cruise ship theme parties. Families, couples, and singles alike can find opportunities for excitement and engagement, while unique and creative theme party ideas add an extra touch of excitement to your cruise. Get involved in the customization of your cruise experience and troubleshoot any issues that may arise to ensure a smooth and enjoyable theme party experience.

NCL Theme Nights 2024 Schedule

March 15, 2024

theme nights on ncl

Are you about to travel with Norwegian Cruise Line and want to know what theme nights you will find on your trip? Then this is the right article for you.

You will find the full schedule of the 2024 theme nights.

The only thing I want to say before we start is that NCL is a little different than other cruise lines .

It seems that they care more about the idea of “ Freestyle Cruising ” rather than having specific dress codes.

For this reason, there is not the same number of themed party night s that you can find on Carnival Royal Caribbean or MSC.

However, there are some themed nights and parties so let’s take a look at them.

Table of Contents

The Glow Night

Glow part on NCL

Glow Night is one of the most famous ones on NCL.

It’s basically a vibrant, neon-filled party under the stars where guests are encouraged to wear bright and fluorescent colors .

You will find music, dancing and light shows that will create a lively and electrifying atmosphere.

For this theme night, women can wear neon-colored dresses , fluorescent leggings , or glow-in-the-dark accessories like glow bracelets and necklaces.

If you wanna keep it simple a neon skirt or t-shirt will be enough .

Men can wear neon or bright-colored shirts with bright shorts or trousers. Remember to play with accessories like a glow-in-the-dark tie, wristbands, or hats

70’s, 80’s or 90’s night

The nostalgic-themed nights are some of my favorite ones.

They will take you back to the 70s, 80s, or 90s with music hits, iconic dance moves, and unforgettable fashion.

All the passengers of the cruise will basically celebrate the past with a party of retro fun.

What to wear? Well, there’s tons of stuff to choose from!

Women can opt for bell-bottom jeans , colorful jumpsuits , or sequined dresses to reflect the 70s disco era.

Electric neon outfits for the 80s, or grunge-inspired ensembles for the 90s. Accessories like hoop earrings, headbands, and platforms can complete every look.

Men can choose from a wide range of options, such as polyester suits and platform shoes for a 70s vibe, leather jackets for the 80s, or flannel shirts and band tees for the 90s.

Just follow your spirit and wear what makes you feel good!

  • Latin Night

Party on a Norwegian ship

Latin Night is a celebration of Latin American culture.

This night is usually followed by a Latin party featuring salsa, bachata, and merengue music.

What is the most appropriate dress code? Women can wear f lowing dresses or skirts that are easy to move in, paired with comfortable dancing shoes .

Outfits often include red clothes or warm patterns , reflecting the energy and warmth of Latin culture.

Men can go for casual or semi-formal attire , such as bright-colored shirts paired with trousers or jeans.

Formal nights

During formal nights on cruise ships, guests have the opportunity to dress up and enjoy an elegant evening .

These nights often include fine dining, a cocktail with the captain, and professional photography sessions.

However, NCL is one of the few cruise lines that has no formal night .

The reason behind that choice is that NCL believes in “Freestyle Cruising” and therefore never requires an elegant dress code .

However, if you like dressing up you can still do it to take some nice photos .

Women can wear a cocktail dress or a sophisticated pantsuit while men can wear a suit or a tuxedo.

White Night

White Nigh t is a fun event held on many cruise ships. The idea is that guests dress entirely in white for a night.

As far as I know, it’s the only theme night present on every cruise line: we saw it among the Royal Caribbean theme nights , among the Carnival theme nights , and even among the MSC theme nights !

As I have already explained to you in other articles, the dress code is quite simple: you have to dress completely in white .

Some of you have written to me that they have everything but they don’t have white pants in their closet. Then you can simply pair a white shirt with light-colored jeans .

The Schedule for all Ships

NCL Ship

As you can imagine, not all theme nights are the same for every ship.

They may change based on the itinerary, the duration of the cruise, and the choices of the cruise director.

Below you will find the 2024 schedule for all NCL ships ( take these as indicative as they may vary ).

Cruising is like 'sharing a huge house,' and there are protocols to follow

do all cruises have a white party

On a recent cruise, I woke up to the sound of pop music from a nearby stateroom. It wasn’t loud enough that I could hear every lyric, but the thumping of the beat did make the luxury of lazing in bed for a few extra minutes less pleasant.

I love playing music loudly as much as anyone, but on a cruise passengers’ behavior can have more of an impact on fellow guests than in some other settings.

“When cruising, there are so many things to consider because you're essentially sharing a huge house on water with a bunch of people you've never seen and perhaps will never see again in (your) life,” said Jackie Vernon-Thompson, an etiquette expert and CEO of From the Inside-Out School of Etiquette. “However, your attitude should not be, ‘Oh, I’ll never see them again so I can do whatever I want. There are protocols to follow.”

What is cruise etiquette?

Thompson, who has been taking cruises for 20+ years and sailed with lines including Royal Caribbean International and Holland America Line , defines etiquette as “conducting yourself in a way that doesn't offend others.”

On a cruise, that can start as early as the boarding process. Some cruise lines assign guests times for embarkation and passengers shouldn’t arrive too early or late, said Linda Speer, a travel adviser affiliated with Virtuoso-member agency Brownell Travel.

“If you're assigned a boarding time, be respectful of it because otherwise, you're just going to clog everything up,” she said. The same goes for getting off the ship.

Punctuality is also important if a shore excursion is booked so other passengers and crew members aren’t stuck waiting for you. “Be on time so that it won't inconvenience others,” said Thompson.

Speer noted that the meeting time for an excursion will be earlier than the listed start time. “Be sure and read your shore excursion ticket carefully,” she said. Travelers who go exploring on their own should also take note of when they need to be back. Setting your watch or phone to the clock on the ship can help.

Cruise sea days: How to make the most of them

Brandon O. Smith, who runs the YouTube channel The Weekend Cruiser , noted that ship elevators are typically located next to the stairs, and not designed to accommodate throngs of people getting out of a show, for instance. “When it comes to (the) elevator, that's where you're really going to want to think a little bit about your actions,” said the 40-year-old, who lives in Miami.

If you are the last one to show up, he said, you should probably be among the last to get on the elevator. He encouraged travelers who are able to take the stairs to do so to free up elevator space for those who may have mobility limitations.

Guests waiting to get on the elevator should let others off before walking in and stand aside during the ride so fellow passengers can get off if they have not reached their floor, according to Thompson.

Here are some other etiquette tips for cruises:

◾ Bring headphones: “Don't subject the passengers in close proximity to your music or your FaceTime conversations or your speakerphone dialogue,” said Thompson.

◾ Be mindful of your neighbors: Even passengers with a balcony cabin should remember that those outdoor spaces are not as private as they may seem.

“You may have visual privacy … but you do not have audio privacy,” said Smith. “If you are five or six rooms away from me, I’m going to hear every bit of your conversation.” If you’re having a personal discussion you don’t want others to hear, that might not be the place to do it.

◾ Dress for the occasion: Cruise lines have guidelines for attire, with some more strict than others. Speer suggested passengers keep tabs on both formal and informal dress codes, and choose clothing appropriately.

( Click here for USA TODAY’s guide to cruise line dress codes. )

◾ Consider gratuities: Mainstream cruise lines typically apply gratuities automatically to passengers’ accounts during a sailing. And while guests may be able to adjust those before disembarking, Thompson urged them to tip no less than the recommended amount.

Speer added that “it’s always a good idea” to also give a small tip when ordering room service. “That’s somebody that had to go to a lot of trouble and walk a long distance to put your tray together and bring it to you,” she said.

Should you correct someone else’s behavior?

If another passenger is not following those best practices or is disrupting other guests’ vacations, that doesn’t mean you should correct them. In those cases, Thompson said, “it all depends on the relationship.”

If you don’t know the person well or at all, speaking to them directly may not yield the desired result (and could potentially escalate). “I highly recommend that you go to a crew member and advise them of the situation and allow them to take care of it because they have the authority,” Thompson said.

As I noted recently in another thread titled almost exactly the same - I think it depends on the ship.  Bliss doesn't have this, they call it Caliente instead but it seems very similar to the Glow Party noted above...

Just off the Gem.   It was called the Glow Party.

Awe does that mean our grandson doesn't need to wear white? He remembers the White Hot Party on the Dawn in 2018. Music was horrible, but I stayed for him turns out he only wanted to see the glow in the dark shirt :).

We sail in June on the Gem.

You wear white. A lot of ships have a glow shirt painting arts-n-craft activity with a free tshirt and paints.

But no angels with wings. If you go early, the hand out lighted toys/wands.

smplybcause

Most people still wear white. I've seen a few in other colors that react to black light. If you get there early they have face painting too.

yes, it's the glow party now, but most still wear white.  They do have T-shirt painting a few hours before the party starts, and they give out the color tubes before the party.  I was on the breakaway Jan 11-20.  It was windy the night of the glow party, but it still was fun.  They kept it outside at H2O (said they would move it inside to Bliss if the weather was too bad)

Last few cruises we were on they had something called Caliente???? first one very few people showed up. and 2nd one most people left after 5 minutes. Was not fun or entertaining. Just had some dancers on a big screen in freezing weather.

Was looking forward to Glow party and the only one on schedule was for Entourage.

Phaedrus78

We specifically brought white outfits to wear to the GLOW party.  On Encore it was on the general pool deck as there is no Spice H2O.

We had an all right time, but to be honest the DJ kind of sucked.  There are only so many Pitbull songs I can stand... there are other artists that can be mixed in.

RIGHT? I didn't even know Pitbull had so many songs and videos. If too much Pitbull is no good, don't even bother with the Excape!

P&O Cruise Parties: What to Wear

do all cruises have a white party

Cruise theme party nights have replaced formal nights on many Australian ships. This leaves many wondering what to wear to a Gatsby Party, White Party, Nero (the all-black equivalent on New Zealand cruises), or Back to School Party.

Bianco, P&O's White Party

This all-white event is usually the biggest themed party night on any P&O cruise. Everyone dresses in white, often adding 'bianco' accessories such as hats, sunglasses, jewellery or feather boas.

In line with P&O's smart-casual evening dress code, you can spice up your white T-shirt poolside outfit into something more exotic. For men, a white shirt with a pair of white jeans or shorts will fit the theme with little effort. For a more cruisey feel, an unbuttoned white shirt with a white vest or T-shirt underneath would also work. Don't forget to bring your white fedoras and caps, too.

For the ladies, keep it easy with a white summer dress and sandals, or white jeans and top. White shorts are also OK, but you may want to glam it up with an elegant top so it doesn't look like you've come straight from the pool.

Bianco's only requirement is that you dress in all-white-everything, so rock up in your nicest white garments and dress to impress on this night to remember. Don't stress too much if you forget anything for this event, as P&O offer accessories for most themed events on board.

Get ready to bust a move on the specially made dance floor, which is raised slightly above the pool deck, and enjoy a white cocktail or check out the white selfie wall leaving you with lasting memories of the night. Kids and adults are both welcome to this event, so make sure you pack enough white for the entire family.

Gatsby Party

A trickier question is what to wear to a Gatsby Party on a P&O cruise. This dress code is almost formal, with plenty of men in vintage suits and women in glamorous flapper dresses and fancy headpieces.

This high-end cocktail party requires a little more attention to capture the Gatsby essence and complement the jazz music and Champagne. For men, a white long-sleeve shirt with braces or suspenders, suit pants and a bow tie is a classic option. Hat styles include a flat cap such as the newsboy or cabbie; a fedora or Panama hat; a straw boater or bowler hat.

Ladies can bring out the sparkly dresses with long black gloves, or keep it casual in a little black dress with heels. Whatever you chose to wear, jewels in your hair or a headpiece are a must. P&O does offer 1920s-style accessories for the Gatsby evening if you do leave something at home, or feel unprepared on the night.

In the lead-up to the big night, P&O's daily program includes onboard '20s dance lessons (free) and workshops to make a Gatsby -style headpiece adorned with feathers, lace and sequins ($12).

Back To School Party

P&O's back-to-school-themed event, offered on cruises five nights or longer, will set your inner child free. This adults-only event is sure to have you dancing along to bangers from your high school days, so dress up as your 18-year-old self or favourite teacher from high school. Costumes aren't a must, but if you can still fit into that Year 12 uniform, why not show it off? Accessories can include glow sticks, backpacks, headbands, ribbons in your hair or anything else reminiscent of your days as a student.

P&O's Nero or Black Party was inspired by the Bianco White Party, but tailored for New Zealand cruises to celebrate one of the country's national colours. Wearing your All Blacks rugby gear is totally acceptable or just pack your best black clothes, including black suits for the guys or black dresses for the girls. Spice it up with a black hat, sunglasses, jewellery or a wig.

I went on my first cruise with 3 generations of my family, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life

  • I recently went on my first cruise with my parents, sister, and grandmother.
  • I'd never been on a cruise before and was surprised that there were things for all of us to enjoy.
  • We all had a good time and I'll treasure the memories we made together.

Insider Today

Until last month, I had never been on a cruise. Neither had my parents or my sister, but my grandmother — my nan — often travels by cruise ship, so we decided to join her on a cruise .

We decided on a trip to the Norwegian fjords, which we all wanted to see, and traveled on the 5,206-capacity Iona — the UK's largest cruise ship until 2022.

It was the first time we'd all gone on vacation as a family of five. My 16-year-old sister, me at 25, my parents — both 50 — and my nan, who is 72 — were there.

The environment took some adjusting

The cruise took us a couple of days to get used to. The idea of being at sea felt almost claustrophobic when compared to the pedestrian-friendly city vacations I'm used to, and my nan didn't adjust to the sheer number of children (and the noise) on board at first, because she's used to going on cruises when children are at school.

But we gradually found a rhythm. My family are early risers, but I don't usually eat breakfast, so I'd wake up with them, have a coffee in bed, and then head to the gym while they went to get food. If we were spending a day in a port, we'd enjoy a few hours exploring, probably getting a coffee or some lunch, before heading back on the ship for the rest of the day.

There were plenty of places on the ship where I could spend some time by myself, too. There was an adults-only area on one of the top decks, so as we were blessed with surprisingly good weather, I'd go up there, order a beer or a cocktail, and read my book in the sun. I also enjoyed spending time in one of the quieter bars on the ship. I bought the WiFi package largely so I could keep in touch with my girlfriend and keep an eye on emails, but it also allowed me to kill some time scrolling social media or checking the soccer news.

It was good to spend more time with my family

I was a little nervous about spending so much time with my family. Apart from a short trip to Madrid with my dad last year, it was the first trip I'd taken with my parents and sister in two years, and the first with my nan since 2015.

It wasn't always easy to go without the space I'm used to — and to go longer than usual without seeing my girlfriend — but the trade-off of seeing more of my family was worth it. The trip was only for a week, and it was good to spend time with both of my parents, as well as my sister, who, at 16, is getting older and looking toward university. I liked spending more time with my nan , too, particularly now that she's in her 70s and is still in good health.

Now that we're back, I find myself missing the trip. While there are aspects of being on a cruise that I don't necessarily love — the bars and restaurants can start to feel a bit samey after a while, for example — there was a lot that I enjoyed.

The places we visited were unforgettable, too. From riding the Skylift in the village of Loen and taking in the picturesque surroundings to visiting the coolest coffee shop in Stavanger, one of Norway's biggest cities, there were some great destinations I probably would never have visited had we not decided to go for the cruise.

I always associated cruises with retired couples and families with young children, but I found plenty to do as someone in their 20s, particularly because I wanted a relaxing vacation. And being able to spend time with my family made it all the more memorable.

These LGBTQIA+ travel agencies can help you plan the perfect cruise

Ashley Kosciolek

Travel is one of the best ways to experience the world and learn about cultures that are different from your own. But when you're traveling as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, it can be comforting to venture out with a group of like-minded people.

Thinking about a cruise? Looking for gay travel agents or agencies that cater specifically to the LGBTQIA+ community? These travel companies can help you plan the perfect voyage. They mainly specialize in partial- or full-ship charters, where a large number of cabins (if not all of them) is reserved for your group. Read on to see which of these gay travel agencies might be a good fit for your LGBTQIA+-focused cruise .

Note: The information was accurate at the time of publication. Sailings are subject to availability and may be changed or canceled without notice. New voyages may also be added without notice. Check each agency's website for the most up-to-date information.

Atlantis Events

do all cruises have a white party

Established in 1991, Atlantis specializes in LGBTQIA+ travel but mostly caters to the gay male community. Although it does offer chartered experiences at a handful of land-based resorts, most of its events are cruise ship charters.

The agency books trips for more than 25,000 travelers each year, nearly half of whom are solo travelers . In addition to raucous parties and handpicked entertainment, Atlantis provides luxury, camaraderie and adventure in some of the world's most beautiful locations.

These trips are ideal for gay travelers looking to mingle and party, as well as couples who want to get away with others in the gay community.

Brand g Vacations

Brand g has been a premier operator of luxury river cruises and land tours for more than a decade. Lines Brand g has partnered with include Amadeus River Cruises and Uniworld River Cruises, among others. Available options take passengers along the Rhine, Danube, Mekong, Moselle, Ganges and more.

Because the company specializes in river cruises with a few exceptions, you'll travel with between 40 and 200 passengers in an intimate full-charter setting that caters to the LGBTQIA+ community and its straight allies.

Brand g packages include upscale amenities such as luxury small-group airport transfers and pre-cruise hotel stays and tours. The company also includes alcohol and shore excursions in its fares.

Dreams Unlimited Travel

do all cruises have a white party

Dreams Unlimited Travel is a gay-owned and -operated travel agency that specializes in Disney vacations — Disney World, Disneyland, Adventures by Disney and, of course, Disney cruises — for all travelers, not just those in the LGBTQIA+ community.

In business for more than two decades, it sells a range of Disney Cruise Line voyages, as well as sailings from Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises .

Although they don't necessarily offer chartered cruises, the staff is equipped to assist LGBTQIA+ travelers in finding the perfect trip for them. This means that a wider selection of voyages is available because they aren't limited to just charters or group sailings.

Netherlands-based GaySail organizes small-group gay charter voyages aboard sailing yachts. Each boat carries between 10 and 16 passengers, with one to three vessels sailing together for a group of anywhere from 10 to 30 men. GaySail's nude cruise arm, GayNudeSail, offers similar sailings with a clothing-optional atmosphere.

Destination options for group sailings might include Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, the Seychelles, the Caribbean and Tahiti. Passengers can also opt for a private charter in other areas of the world. All cruises, whether group or private, include the services of a skipper and cook, as well as breakfast and lunch, with dinner organized in port and paid for via a group fund called a "kitty."

The voyages are for gay men only, with a passenger makeup of about 30% to 40% couples and 60% to 70% singles. Guests come from all across the globe, but the official language spoken on board is English. Ages generally range from about 30 to 50, but the cruises see men from all stages of life as long as they're fit enough to sail. (Sailing experience is not required. Passengers can choose to learn from the crew or simply relax and enjoy the trip.)

The main difference in atmosphere between a GaySail cruise and a gay cruise on a large cruise ship is that the former has more of a laid-back vibe, meaning no raucous parties, all-day entertainment or daily housekeeping services.

Olivia Travel

do all cruises have a white party

Originally founded as Olivia Records with the aim of helping women launch their own music careers, Olivia Travel has planned trips for more than 350,000 lesbians and other LGBTQIA+ women since it switched its focus four decades ago.

Specializing in women-only travel for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, Olivia offers full-charter vacations, many of them cruises. Because of its musical roots, Olivia has called on big-name talent, such as the Indigo Girls and Cris Williamson, to perform on some of its sailings.

In addition to ocean cruises, the company sometimes offers river sailings.

Out Adventures

This Canada-based company focuses on gay travel for smaller groups, offering a more upscale and intimate experience. Travelers can either join existing land-based tours of no more than 16 people or plan their own tour, with the agency tailoring the experience to client preferences.

Cruises sponsored by Out Adventures max out at 40 people, ensuring you'll feel like more than just a number. This can also present a chance for singles to meet others in a more tight-knit setting. The company's average vacationer is 40 to 55 years old, making these trips ideal for anyone who's no longer in the "party phase."

Additionally, Out Adventures' trips focus on boutique experiences in port while striving to give back to global LGBTQIA+ communities — $50 from each passenger's booking is donated to Rainbow Railroad — while helping to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time with regard to local customs and attitudes.

Pied Piper Travel

In business for more than 30 years, Pied Piper Travel offers gay and lesbian group sailings on several cruises each year. The company's lines of choice in the past have included Azamara , Cunard Line and Celebrity , featuring destinations like Alaska , the Holy Land, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and Australia and New Zealand .

Passengers tend to be mostly gay men of all ages, but lesbians and non-gay or -lesbian friends and family members are also welcome to join.

Although it isn't possible to know how big your group will be ahead of time, past trips have hosted between 15 and 900 passengers. As long as a group minimum of 10 people is met, Pied Piper will assign an onboard host to lead group gatherings, shore excursions and more.

R Family Vacations

do all cruises have a white party

Founded in 2003 by Gregg Kaminsky and Kelli Carpenter (former partner of Rosie O'Donnell, who was previously affiliated with the brand), R Family Vacations is unique in the LGBTQIA+ travel space in that its specialty is vacations for families with children.

Since O'Donnell and Carpenter parted ways in 2007, the agency has expanded a bit, venturing into the realm of adults-only LGBTQIA+ travel and personal travel.

However, a large part of its customer base still relies on the R Family name for family-friendly cruise bookings that are not full charters.

RSVP Vacations

Offering gay and lesbian travel since 1985, RSVP Vacations charters entire ships for its cruises. The charters tend to be on some of the newest and largest vessels afloat, promising lots of ways for travelers to have fun on board.

In terms of entertainment, the RSVP team schedules themed parties, where costumes are highly encouraged; showcases the latest films, both gay and mainstream; and highlights performances by gay-positive singers, dancers and comedians.

Although it was acquired by Atlantis Events in 2007, RSVP — which has helped more than 100,000 members of the LGBTQIA+ community travel together — does not offer land-based trips. Like Atlantis, RSVP caters to travel for gay men, but its clientele is about 10% lesbian on each sailing.

Saltyboys Sailing Cruises

Like GaySail, Saltyboys is a Netherlands-based travel company that specializes in small-group gay-men-only cruises on sailing ships. The main difference is that while GaySail offers cruises for passengers who don't feel comfortable going au naturel, all of Saltyboys' voyages are designated as either clothing-optional or nudist cruises .

The Saltyboys clientele generally ranges in age from 20 to 50, but there are always exceptions.

Each vessel carries about 10 passengers in addition to the crew, and boats might sail in a flotilla of more than one vessel, meaning your group could join up with others while in port. All voyages include the services of a skipper and crew. Although no sailing experience is required, if you don't wish to learn how to help with anchoring or do your own grocery shopping or cooking, Saltyboys also offers luxury sailings where your fare includes a cook, so everything will be handled for you.

Source Journeys

do all cruises have a white party

For two decades, Source Journeys has offered all-gay luxury travel that balances adventure with class. It caters equally to singles and couples in groups ranging from 15 to 300 people. The company also donates a portion of all proceeds to LGBTQIA+ charities.

Besides land vacations and individually customized trips, Source promotes full charters of small, intimate cruise ships from lines like Windstar and Atlas Ocean Voyages . You won't find wild parties or scandalous shenanigans, but you will enjoy an upscale experience that's perfect for meeting other gay travelers with discerning tastes.

Source Journeys also runs partial gay charters aboard larger ships (think: vessels from Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line), but those are generally specific Pride sailings that are shorter in duration and to less exotic destinations. Most of what the company touts are voyages to places like the Black Sea, the Dalmatian Coast, Tahiti, the Greek Isles and Antarctica .

Toto Tours is the oldest LGBTQIA+-focused travel company that has had the same management throughout its tenure. Opened in 1990, the agency helps gays, lesbians and their friends and family members travel in comfort and safety.

Most of Toto's business comes from land-based trips and tours, including customized ones, but it does occasionally add cruises to its repertoire.

Vacaya prides itself on serving the entire LGBTQIA+ community and its allies rather than focusing heavily on just gay men. The company provides fully chartered access to all-inclusive, land-based resorts, but where it really shines is with its cruises.

Often offering both river and ocean cruise options, this travel agency mixes fun with adventure and learning on ships both large and small, allowing you to find a sailing that meets your preferences.

Although Vacaya is a fledgling company, having launched in 2019 with its first season of trips, it offers a solid product.

Morning Rundown: Biden's debate performance amplifies a major Democratic fear, how gut bacteria may trigger weight gain, and Teddy Roosevelt's stolen pocket watch is returned

Biden-Trump 2024 debate highlights: Biden stumbles as Trump fires off falsehoods

What to know about tonight's debate.

  • President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump held their first presidential debate of the cycle tonight in Atlanta. The two candidates were in a studio without an audience.
  • Biden struggled at times, stumbling over answers with a raspy voice — a campaign aide said he has a cold — and adding fodder to concerns about his age and mental fitness. Near the halfway mark, Biden started gaining his footing again, mocking Trump's physical fitness and calling him a "whiner" and a "loser."
  • Trump, meanwhile, offered numerous falsehoods and misleading statements in his responses. He hammered Biden on immigration and the border, even when he was asked about other issues . And he repeatedly dodged questions about whether he would accept the results of the election.
  • Both candidates also hurled personal insults at each other, with Biden hitting Trump for his alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels and Trump calling Biden a "complainer" and the "worst president" in American history.

How Obama and Pelosi react to Biden's debate performance could shape the race

do all cruises have a white party

Just how consequential was Biden’s poor debate performance? We will find out in the next 72 to 96 hours. Based on the number of panicked texts and emails I received from various leaders in the Democratic Party, there is a lot more consternation about Biden’s running for a second term than I’ve heard since he took his first oath in 2021.

Here are a few things to watch in the next few days.

1. How does Team Biden calm the Democratic waters?

The obvious answer is to flood the zone with Biden, signing him up for interviews with multiple outlets, from the Sunday shows to Jon Stewart and everything in between. Whether he’s up to it or not, they may have no choice but to put him out there if they want to shore up the nervous nellies.

2. What Democrats step up and defend Biden as staying on as the nominee?

The two Democrats I’m most intrigued to hear from are former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former President Barack Obama. They are, arguably, the two most influential Democrats not named Joe Biden right now, and if they went public saying, “Thank you for your service but it’s time for new blood,” I’m not sure Biden could survive as the nominee.

Of course, they are also the two Democrats Team Biden needs the most right now to go public and calm the waters. The most influential donors who are nervous about Biden will follow the lead of Pelosi and Obama on this. One way or another, I expect to hear from them. The longer it takes for them to rally around Biden publicly, the more the Democratic chattering class will start talking about a convention scenario.

When Ronald Reagan had his poor first debate performance, he didn’t have to wait nearly three months for a second bite at the apple. But before folks start looking up the rules of an open convention, expect the Biden campaign to remind many of us of the Reagan comeback. His best hope right now is that the country is so polarized that the debate barely moves the poll needle. That having been said, the biggest problem Biden has right now is that, at best, he’s a good six weeks away from being able to have a chance to prove the growing number of doubters wrong. It could be the start of a long, hot summer of intrigue inside the Democratic Party.

Biden’s performance in the first debate tonight has sparked a  new round of criticism from Democrats , as well as public and private musing about whether he should remain at the top of the ticket.

Party rules make it almost impossible to replace nominees without their consent, let alone smoothly replace them with someone else. And doing so would amount to party insiders' overturning the results of primaries when Democratic voters overwhelmingly to nominate Biden. He won almost 99% of all delegates.

Still, the Democratic National Committee’s charter does make some provisions in case the party’s nominee is incapacitated or opts to step aside, and an anti-Biden coup at the convention is theoretically possible, if highly unlikely. So how would it work?

Fact check: Are immigrants taking 'Black jobs'?

Elleiana Green Elleiana Green is a Digital Politics intern with NBC News

Asked about Black voters who are disappointed with their economic progress, Trump claimed Black Americans are losing their jobs because of illegal border crossings under Biden’s administration.

“The fact is that his big kill on the Black people is the millions of people that he’s allowed to come through the border. They’re taking Black jobs now,” Trump said.

There's no evidence that undocumented immigrants are taking jobs away from Black Americans. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the Black unemployment rate fell to 4.8% in April 2023 — an all-time low. Before that, the Black unemployment rate was as high as 10.2% in April 2021.

Biden’s performance in the first presidential debate is raising questions about whether Democrats might try to replace him as the nominee.

A peppier Biden addresses debate watch party crowd: 'We're gonna beat this guy'

Ghael Fobes

Biden began his remarks in front of the debate watch party crowd with an anecdote he’s used before about a John Wayne movie and lying, dog-faced pony soldiers.

Appearing more energetic than he did during the debate, Biden used the anecdote to make the case that Trump lied throughout the debate and that fact-checkers would be sifting through his responses.

He said: "They’re gonna be fact-checking all the things he said. I can’t think of one thing he said that was true. I’m not being facetious. Look, we’re gonna beat this guy; we need to beat this. I need you in order to beat ’em. You’re the people I’m running for."

Kamala Harris: Biden had a 'slow start' but a 'strong finish'

do all cruises have a white party

Alexandra Marquez

Vice President Harris defended Biden after the debate, acknowledging to CNN, "Yes, there was a slow start, but it was a strong finish."

She said Biden was "extraordinarily" strong on "substance, on policy, on performance."

Asked why Biden’s performance was significantly different from his performances in primary debates against Harris and other Democrats in 2020, she continued her wholehearted defense of him.

“I got the point that you’re making about a 1½-hour debate tonight. I’m talking about 3½ years of performance and work that has been historic,” she said before listing Biden’s work on infrastructure and his strength in the Oval Office and the Situation Room.

Her characterization of “substance” echoed remarks earlier in the night from a Biden campaign aide and California Gov. Gavin Newsom .

“People can debate on style points, but ultimately this election and who is the president of the U.S. has to be about substance, and the contrast is clear,” Harris said.

Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, told NBC News that Trump has not asked him to be his running mate.

"He has not asked me," Vance said in the spin room after the debate.

Trump recently said that he knows who he wants to be his running mate and that his pick would be at the debate. NBC News has reported that Vance, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida are the top contenders to join the Trump ticket.

GOP Senate candidates try to turn Biden's performance against Democrats

do all cruises have a white party

Henry J. Gomez

Republican Senate candidates in key battlegrounds were quick to respond to tonight's debate with a coordinated message rooted in Biden's shaky performance: This is the candidate my opponent votes with nearly all of the time.

"Think about the Joe Biden you saw tonight," Bernie Moreno, the GOP nominee seeking to unseat Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio, posted on X . "That’s who Sherrod Brown supports for President and votes with 99% of the time."

In Michigan, former Rep. Mike Rogers, the front-runner in August's GOP Senate primary, posted that Rep. Elissa Slotkin, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, "votes with Joe Biden 100% of the time but she hasn’t said a word about tonight’s debate."

Dave McCormick, the GOP Senate nominee in Pennsylvania, posted a clip of Biden stumbling through an answer and remarking that "we finally beat Medicare."

"This is the Joe Biden that Bob Casey votes with 98% of the time," McCormick, referring to the Democratic incumbent, wrote on X.

And in Arizona, GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake noted that Rep. Ruben Gallego, her likely Democratic opponent, "went into radio silence for the debate."

"He knows it was an embarrassment to his party & the man he’s supported 100% of the time," Lake posted on X.

Brown, Slotkin, Casey and Gallego have yet to weigh in on X.

'Double haters' want a new name

Reporting from a debate watch party in Phoenix

“Double haters” who assembled in Arizona have come up with new terms for their feelings after watching the debate tonight in Phoenix.

“Double cringe,” Jeff Herr, a self-identified “McCain Republican,” said of how he felt watching the debate tonight.

“Double frustrated,” said Nicole Aguirre, a conservative Christian who doesn’t plan to vote for president this year.

Fact check: Does Biden want to raise 'everybody's taxes' by four times?

Jane C. Timm

“Nobody ever cut taxes like us. He wants to raise your taxes by four times. He wants to raise everybody’s taxes by four times,” Trump claimed. "He wants the Trump tax cuts to expire."

Biden’s tax plan “holds harmless for 98% of households,” said Kyle Pomerleau, senior fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute. And Biden wants to extend the majority of the Trump tax cuts, too, though he has advocated for hiking taxes on very high earners.

Gavin Newsom: 'You don't turn your back' on Biden

California Gov. Gavin Newsom pushed back on his fellow Democrats who panicked after Biden's debate performance, telling them, "Worry less and do more."

"We have the opportunity to universally have the back of this president, who’s had our back," Newsom told MSNBC after the debate, adding, "You don’t turn your back. You go home with the one that brought you to the dance. One hundred percent all in."

Newsom also lauded Biden, calling his debate performance a win on "substance."

"I’m old-school. I’m old-fashioned. That's what matters to me," Newsom said.

Fact check: The Jan. 6 crowd was not 'ushered in' by the police

do all cruises have a white party

Adam Edelman

"If you would see my statements that I made on Twitter at the time and also my statement that I made in the Rose Garden, you would say it's one of the strongest statements you've ever seen. In addition to the speech I made in front of, I believe, the largest crowd I've ever spoken to, and I will tell you, nobody ever talks about that. They talk about a relatively small number of people that went to the Capitol and, in many cases, were ushered in by the police. And as Nancy Pelosi said, it was her responsibility, not mine. She said that loud and clear." Trump

During a lengthy answer to a question about whether he would accept the result of the 2024 election and say all political violence is unacceptable, Trump made several false statements, including the claim that police "ushered" rioters into the U.S. Capitol and that then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said it was her responsibility to keep the chamber safe.

Video and news reports of the Jan. 6 riots clearly captured a U.S. Capitol under attack by pro-Trump crowds who overran the law enforcement presence around and inside the complex.

On Pelosi, Trump was most likely referring to video shot by Pelosi’s daughter Alexandra for an HBO documentary that showed her during the events of Jan. 6, 2021, tensely wondering how the Capitol was allowed to be stormed.

“We have responsibility, Terri,” Pelosi says to her chief of staff, Terri McCullough, as they leave the Capitol in a vehicle. ”We did not have any accountability for what was going on there, and we should have. This is ridiculous.”

“You’re going to ask me in the middle of the thing, when they’ve already breached the inaugural stuff, ‘Should we call the Capitol Police?’ I mean the National Guard. Why weren’t the National Guard there to begin with?” Pelosi says in the video.

“They clearly didn’t know, and I take responsibility for not having them just prepare for more,” Pelosi said.

Many allies of Trump have tried for the more than three years since the riots to paint Pelosi as somehow being responsible for the violence.

Some Trump-backing Republicans have, for example, falsely claimed that she blocked the National Guard from going to the Capitol during the riots.
