Cataloging the history of the region’s reliance on anthracite coal, Scranton’s Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnace tells the stories of the local immigrant-based mining community and its trials and tribulations throughout history. The daily life of hard coal miners is the museum’s focus, and exhibits trace the lives of area’s residents through documents, artifacts, and the communities’ shared spaces.

The historic Scranton Iron Furnaces are also on site as a means of educating visitors about the once-booming iron production industry. Four stone-blast furnaces remain at the site, which was once operated by the Lackawanna Iron and Steel Company.

A gift shop and interpretive tours join the displays featured at the Furnace’s Visitor Center. 

ELECTRIC CITY AQUARIUM & REPTILE DEN

For a quick breather from historic attractions, stop by the Electric City Aquarium and Reptile Den , Scranton’s hub for marine life. Stingrays, sharks, octopi and more make up the aquarium’s extensive species list, which also features amphibians and reptiles, like snakes and tortoises. 

With a focus on conservation and education, the museum hosts animal feedings on weekends, including shark, alligator and catfish cove events. The Touch Tank is open for interactive experiences with stingrays and invertebrates daily. A recently added Rainforest section rounds out a diverse mix of aquatic life open to visiting animal lovers.

Keep an eye on the aquarium schedule for events like Wine Under the Waves. 

NAY AUG PARK

Located on the east side of town, Nay Aug Park is Scranton’s ultimate day destination, serving the community’s leisure-seeking residents since 1893. Today, park attractions include the Walsh Swim Complex, Everhart Museum, Rose Garden and David Wenzel Treehouse, among many others. Visit rain or shine; the park has plenty of things to do indoors, as well as outdoors. 

Natural landmarks like The Gorge, join historic remnants like the Brooks Mine, to turn any walk through Nay Aug into a stroll through times. With views of The Gorge, the park’s Tree House is a hidden vantage point and photo op, especially in fall foliage season. Crossing the Roaring Brook, the Kanjorski Covered Bridge is another picturesque northeastern classic within Nay Aug. 

During the warmer months, the park’s stage at Melody Garden hosts a variety of performing artists; keep an eye on the calendar for live music events and more. 

RAILRIDERS BASEBALL GAME

There’s no better way to get to know a community than catching a local sports match. When in Scranton, you’ll want to root for the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre RailRiders , Lackawanna County’s minor league baseball greats. With plenty of members advancing to the Yankees roster, the team’s games are filled with all-star action. 

If you’re visiting the Scranton area in the height of baseball season, check out the team’s game schedule and head over to the PNC Field for the quintessential Lackawanna sports experience, complete with concessions, mascots and regional pride. PNC Field is located a few minutes south of Scranton, just outside of Moosic, Pennsylvania. 

EVERHART MUSEUM

Located within an unassuming building in Nay Aug Park, the Everhart is a pioneering 20th century regional museum open since 1908. Founded by Doctor Isaiah F. Everhart, the institution divides its focus between art, history, and natural history, featuring rotating exhibits alongside a permanent collection of items hailing from Scranton, to as far as Oceania. 

Recent acquisitions include an addition to the museum’s extensive collection of paintings by Scranton local John Willard Raught. Check the museum’s calendar for events and guided tours; a mobile guide app is also available to enhance your viewing experience. 

LACKAWANNA COUNTY COAL MINE

Open seasonally, the Lackawanna County Coal Mine at McDade Park preserves and shares local mining history, one Lackawanna Coal Mine tour at a time. After purchasing your ticket at the mine box office, you’ll descend into old Slope #190 to begin your tour 300 feet underground. As you step into the shoes of generations of miners, your guide will take you through an anthracite coal facility dating back to 1860. 

You’ll learn about the different kinds of coal available, the progression of mining methods, and the unpredictability of life underground. Tickets can be purchased in the mine’s interpretive center, where you’ll also be able to watch a welcome video and browse the gift shop.

Bring a light jacket or sweater, as temperatures drop the further you descend underground. 

ERIE LACKAWANNA DINING CAR PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Dedicated to elegant dining on the move, the Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society restores, maintains and shares railroad dining cars with the public. The society owns two vintage dining cars in Port Jervis, New York, that have been restored down to the last detail; this includes tableware, china and furniture.

The society invites visitors to dining events in Lackawanna dining car #496, which is currently stationary in Port Jervis. Four-course meals are inspired by original railroad menus and traditions.

Events sell out quickly, so keep an eye on the calendar and book your one of a kind dinner experience in advance. Port Jervis is located about an hour’s drive west of Scranton and makes an ideal small town day trip across the New York border. 

ARCHBALD POTHOLE STATE PARK

Located just a short drive north of town, Archbald Pothole State Park hides a surprising, record-defying natural landmark. The Archbald Pothole is the largest glacial pothole in the world, formed 15,000 years ago. The gaping hole is 38 feet deep, narrowing as it burrows deeper into the earth. While there is no trail network spanning the park, the pothole itself is a novelty and definitely worth a glance. 

The Archbald Pothole was the discovery of miners in the late 19th century, becoming a local legend almost overnight. The State Park is just off of Pennsylvania’s Route 6, making this a convenient stop on any drive north from Scranton. 

SCRANTON CULTURAL CENTER

Ready for some culture? The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple is a great place to catch live shows. Here, you’ll find everything from traveling Broadway productions to community celebrations.

The cultural center houses two theaters, a grand ballroom, as well as meeting rooms. The building itself is a sight to behold. The Neo-Gothic building was originally built as the Masonic Temple and Scottish Rite Cathedral, and it’s an amazing example of the work of architect Raymond M. Hood.

We always joke that the only reason people know about Scranton, PA is because of “The Office” and while that is still up for debate in our own household. We also very affectionately think of this area as the home base of all home bases, at least for the moment that is! Scranton is in the perfect location for all types of road trips from day tripping, weekend tripping, long weekend tripping, and full on vacationing!

I set out to make this post with 10 great road trips from Scranton and had to stop myself at 31 within 6 hours before the entire East Coast, Midwest, New England, and Canada were listed here. If only I could get good Mexican food in Scranton (and by good, I really mean if I could have San Diego’s Mexican food here… )

One of the best little trips from Scranton is to Pennsylvania’s second largest lake. The land was originally inhabited by the indigenous Lenape people, who named the area “Wallenpaupack,” meaning “The Stream of Swift and Slow Water.” But, the lake wasn’t always present; constructed by PP&L in 1926 for hydroelectric and flood control purposes by damming the Wallenpaupack Creek. With 52 miles of shoreline and 13 of length, there’s an abundance of fun to be had on land and water. We suggest spending the day adventuring outdoors and visiting the nearby town area for some grub. Start off your morning by hiking the Wallenpaupack Lake Trail , a not entirely dog friendly , 3 mile loop around the lake. Then head over to Wallenpaupack Boat Tours and Rentals to get out on the lake in the summer!

Other activities for summer exploration include golfing, hiking in the area, fishing, exploring the quaint area, and simply breathing in the fresh Pocono air! During winter, aside from the annual Wally Ice Fest, check out ice skating, ice fishing, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing at the lake. Nearby you can also find skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing!

As for Food, we suggest The Boat House or Wallenpaupack Brewing Company in the Lake Wallenpaupack area. Or you can make the trek over to Honesdale for our all time favorite NEPA area restaurant – Native!

Okay, okay, I know you’re sitting here saying out loud that I’m already including destinations within the Pocono Mountains. Well, you’re right, many of these locations are within the Poconos. I added this because there are so many great places within the Pocono Mountains that you should visit if you have a day or weekend trip. The Poconos covers 4 counties to the West side of the Delaware river and all the way down to the Jim Thorpe area.

We suggest you try not only the main cities that are often visited like Jim Thorpe, Lake Wallenpaupack, Stroudsburg, but also the little communities within the entire Mountain range. Take a trip through the top waterfall hikes within the Poconos, visit the mom and pop shops, and eat at the delis and diners! For those of you that love resorts and/or spas – be sure to visit Woodloch, Kalahari, and Ledges!

The Delaware Water Gap is a national recreation area that lies in both PA and NJ. Marked by the Delaware River’s journey through the mountain ranges and low lying forest, you won’t miss the gorgeous views.

For our hikers, there are 28 miles of Appalachian trail to enjoy within the area. In order to accommodate your travels, there is a hiker shuttle that permits dogs. It runs every 30 minutes at some of the key trailheads and lots. Bicycles are only permitted on the McDade Trail. If you’re bringing your own kayak, bike, canoe, and/or dogs take the MCTA shuttle for easy and free relaying. We like to camp when we visit if staying for longer than a day and suggest the Dingman’s campground on the PA side!

Ricketts Glen is one of the most scenic areas in all of Pennsylvania and also a hiker’s haven! Enjoy hiking the main trail system taking you by the scenic waterfalls. After you’ve had a full day of hiking, go enjoy a swim at Lake Jean. If you’d rather explore the lake by boat, check out the boat rentals. When visiting in winter, be sure to enjoy cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking. There are limited food options available at the park so be sure to plan ahead and bring your needed refreshments. Pets are welcome!

Camping Reservations – $20

Jim Thorpe is a historical and adorable town in Pennsylvania, 60 miles north of Philadelphia and 100 miles west of NYC. The city has a long history in coal mining and the railroad industry that you can learn about in one of its many museums or as you’re taking a ride on the passenger train that still exists today. When visiting Jim Thorpe, you are surrounded by nature. So go ahead and take a hike, go mountain biking, or whitewater raft down the Lehigh Valley Gorge.

While visiting, be sure to check out The Harry Packer Mansion as it was the inspiration for the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney parks in both California and Florida.

Road Trips Within 3 Hours

Home to Cornell University and an abundance of beautiful art and nature. Ithaca can be your gateway to the finger lakes for a wine tasting weekend or you can simply stay put to enjoy everything this beautiful city has to offer. When visiting in the summer, take in all the waterways and hikes to famous gorges, such as Buttermilk State Falls.

On Saturdays, there’s an eclectic farmers market where you can purchase local produce for your picnic lunch. When you come back to visit in winter, check out the frozen falls via hikes, go ice skating, or check out one of their many museums. The Sciencecenter and Johnson Art Museums are two of our favorites!

Before your time here ends, be sure to tour the campus – it’s really beautiful and shouldn’t be missed!

The capital of Pennsylvania is only 2 hours away by car and a load of historical fun to take in at every corner! To be honest, we haven’t been here yet, but have a trip planned this summer for a little weekend getaway. While visiting, we plan to spend some time on the Baron’s Beer Trail to relive the period of time before the prohibition where Harrisburg and Hershey were main brewer locations.

Additionally, take some time to walk the state capitol complex and visit the state museum. After walking the riverfront and taking a cruise, be sure to spend some time at the many great restaurants and bars within the city!

Brotherly love and great eats! In only 2 hours on that turnpike, you can get great food, great music, and a city sky line to fill you with the hustle and bustle you’ve been missing. We highly suggest breaking Philadelphia (and most large cities) into chunks. If you try to do everything in one trip, you won’t be able to enjoy all the city has to offer!

When visiting in the summertime, be sure to plan a weekend with a music festival to take in all the excitement and live music we’ve been missing over these past few COVID years.

History buffs and civil war fanatics rejoice as you visit Gettysburg, PA! Not only is there a ton of history here, there are also a lot of really interesting haunt stories! Add this to your list of Halloween season destinations and you’ll be amazed with the foliage, ghost stories, and battle reenactments. Plan your visit to Gettysburg National Military Park to include a battle walk, campfires, or horseback rides.

When your day is settling down, plan for a period fare from the civil war era from The Dobbin House or head to one of the many delicious farm-to-table establishments. Check out our most Haunted sites post in Gettysburg here :

I’d say this one is self explanatory, but go here, spend the weekend here, and then go again in a few months after your wallet has recovered. As for us, we have spent a ton of time in the city and absolutely love it to pieces, not only for the typical touristy stuff, but for the getting lost, staying out too late by accident, and realizing you’ve accidentally walked 10 miles worth of steps and only traveled within 3 miles of the city sort of stuff too.

We highly suggest breaking NYC into chunks. If you try to do everything in one fell swoop, you won’t be able to enjoy all the city has to offer! Don’t worry, we plan to do mini posts on different areas/weekend trip itineraries. But, until then, try to break up along the following suggestions, if you need some inspiration:

Hudson is an artist’s haven and you will be smitten with this adorable town not even 3 hours away. Wander down their Main Street – Warren Street for great shops, great eats, and beautiful galleries galore. While Hudson is a little expensive for our wallets, we’ve always had such a wonderful experience visiting and are always blown away by the food.

Be sure to check out the many antique stores, The Maker Hotel, and the dried floral shop while visiting! Also, don’t be shocked if you catch some celebrities while visiting, Hudson is about a stone’s throw from the city and many celebrities hole in up here!

The lodging can be pricey here, but we suggest checking out all of the stops via Airbnb, off season stays, hotels in and outside of the town, and even camping nearby!

The capital of NY is a beautiful city with a ton of history. Be sure to check out the Empire plaza with beautiful reflecting pools, a massive park, and gorgeous architecture. Albany is the gateway to great outdoors in the northeast for all 4 seasons and still maintains a lively and lovely downtown.

Be sure to check out Albany in the spring for a gorgeous tulip festival around Mother’s Day that you’ll be sure to reminisce on during those cold winter mornings where you long for the birds chirping and warmth of the sun to bring joy to your day.

Horse racing, hot springs, and a beautiful, dog friendly main street! This place is wholesome, has great food, and loves your dogs too! Whether you’re spending an afternoon passing through or an entire weekend there are a ton of options to have this little city cater to your needs. Our favorite thing to do when passing through with our dogs is to grab a sandwich or two at Putnam market and then walk over to Congress park for a little picnic. One of the simplest and cutest trips from Scranton you can take with your dogs!

The Lakehouse – enough said? But seriously, this is my favorite place to stay in Canandaigua. It’s pricey and definitely a resort vibe – but if you’re looking for a spa weekend with the girls or a reset for your family and pups, this place is for you.

If you’d like to not spend half your savings (alright it’s not that expensive and totally worth it for a summer trip) there’s a ton of great and beautiful camping in the area that you can still stay at and access the water and wineries. The Rose Tavern or Casa Italiana are both great dinner options while popping around the area!

Road Trips Within 6 Hours

These roads trips are definitely worth it.

Gamble, drink, and enjoy the vices with a weekend of the little Vegas of the East Coast. Or just enjoy the beach and lighthouses while biking on the boardwalk. The great thing about Atlantic city is you really can have both of those options and if you aren’t spending all of your money at the table or on the slots, this place is pretty budget friendly. We love the buffets and boardwalk entertainment the most (seriously never a dull moment out there)!

Camden Yards, the home of Edgar Allen Poe, and good seafood. Be sure to sing the star spangled banner while visiting as this is the city of its birth! Alongside crab shacks, the downtown shore hosts the USS Constellation, a civil war era warship.

Camping, boating, and forgetting about city life for a little while. This not so little lake region is filled with some fun little towns, like Bolton Landing, Lake George Village, and Huett’s landing. Be sure to take your time driving up the shoreline and settle on a place that speaks to you. Camping, airbnb, and little BnB’s are available along the entire length of the Lake. Kayaking can be a little risky, but is possible if you’re keeping safety in mind as there are a lot of motorized boats out on the water.

Our nation’s capital and it’s only about 4 hours from Scranton! Hope on the road and head down to the capital for a lesson in history. Our favorite way to see the city is by bike – you can hit all of the great landmarks in a weekend and enjoy downloadable audio tours while you bike around the Potomac thinking about previous wars fought, legislature brought to the forefront and monumental signatures put onto paper.

The weight of this city gets me in the best way every time we visit. Don’t miss out on Arlington Cemetery to pay your respects to our fallen soldiers.

Go Sox! Boston is your long weekend of history, Sam Adams Beer Tours, and good seafood! Just as we suggest with all large cities – break this baby up into chunks! A couple of must do’s from us are hitting up Fenway and/or Yawkee Way, The Cheers Bar, and frolicking around the beautiful colleges within the city.

With lots of city to see and plenty of parks to picnic at, get those miles in and enjoy the city by foot! Don’t forget to visit the wharf and literally a million other places. That being said, we are confident you can fill up a weekend with the aforementioned and likely a long one at that!

One of the prettiest and most fun drives we have ever done (and we have done a lot of driving). We suggest visiting at different times of the year to take in Shenandoah’s unique seasonality. In the spring, you can enjoy beautiful color gradients due to the elevation change and blooms galore.

Driving along the main drag, Skyline drive, you can get to a ton of hikes and fun lodging options. If you’re a bird watcher, make sure you’re on the lookout (which we know you always are if you’re a bird watcher) but we saw a massive owl along with the abundance of wildlife on the many trails!

Mansions and old world money galore – come here and take it all in with some great cocktails and seafood to finish the day. Newport is one of our favorite trips from Scranton to imagine a world 100 years ago along the tortured coastline. We promise you’ll be properly tired by the end of your day if you adventure along the cliff walk and into many of the mansion museums along the rocky shoreline.

It’s highly recommend spending at least a day walking the cliff walk and then onto main street to enjoy a night on the town. There are many summer festivals that can be enjoyed while visiting so be sure to check out the Newport events calendar here.

We’ve only been here in the winter so far, but loved every minute of this area. To be honest, Vermont has been on our top 10 favorite states list for quite some time. I’d argue that Killington strengthened their standing, for now, with our last visit. If you plan on visiting in the winter, be sure to visit Killington/Pico Mountain resort, as it’s the largest ski resort this side of the Mississippi.

When visiting during the summer, be sure to check out the many hikes in the Green Mountains. If you are the adventurous summer visitor, enjoy the Killington resort by bike as one of the best mountain biking destinations in New England. For you golfers out there – The Green Mountain National Golf Course was voted the number one public golf course in Vermont.

Rutland and Woodstock surround the town of Killington and are also cities that offer much to be explored within this area!

For breakfast, we loved Liquid Arts Coffeehouse and Eatery. As for dinner, we thoroughly enjoyed The Foundry . The food here was decadent and the perfect end to a day on the slopes while watching the passing snow squall through the massive windows.

When we moved across country 7 years ago, we drove through Vermont and marked it as one of our must return states. Here we are back on the east coast after being away for about 5 years and we’ve already gone to Vermont 4 times. Seriously, this state speaks to us.

Burlington is a lively and quirky city own the East shoreline of Lake Champlain. Known for its free thinking spirit, you will lose track of time wandering the vibrant city. Spend time downtown touring the shops and delicious farm to table restaurants before nestling in for the night to prepare for an outdoorsy day two!

After enjoying downtown, take a boat trip down Lake Champlain taking in Burlington and the surrounding cities via water. Then, do our favorite touristy activity and walk as much of the beautiful city trails and roads as you can! For food, we highly suggest The Farmhouse Tap and Grill!

More than just Niagara falls, don’t miss the city that gave us buffalo wings and is the second largest in the state of New York. Be sure to check out both Anchor Bar and Duff’s Famous Wings to compare which are the best of the best in Buffalo. Plenty of sports teams to watch (mildly thanks to Terry Pegula (from the great town of Carbondale, PA) and parks to frolic in the summer.

If you’re visiting in the winter – take note you might get stuck in a snowstorm, but who doesn’t love a good blizzard to snuggle up in a cabin and forget about the rest of the world for a hot minute. Buffalo is one of our favorite gateway city trips from Scranton.

The “steel city” and ranked among the top places to live in the United States, Pittsburgh is a great place to go with a family, alone, or with friends. Take a walk on one of the many 446 bridges (no wonder Pittsburgh is also affectionately known as the city of bridges) or hop on one of the rail trails nearby – there’s an abundance of activity to be enjoyed throughout the city. For food, don’t miss out on the Primanti sandwiches or a Pittsburgh salad after a day full of adventure.

Moving away from Northeastern PA made me forget how many beautiful ocean beaches are within a days drive. Feeling a sleepy beach? Feeling a beach filled with nightlife? Family Friendly? There are beaches to cover each option – Rehoboth, Dewey, and Ocean city are all excellent choices, but check out the map of the coastline and pick one for a weekend away!

27. Assateague / Chincoteague, MD/VA (about 5 hours)

Assateague National Seashore is one of our favorite places in the United States to camp! Wild horses and miles of shoreline make this the perfect destination when you want to be by the ocean but without the surplus of tourism and people. Spend a weekend camping on the beach, biking the shoreline, or simply taking in the scenery.

After getting some activity in for the day, be sure to grab some groceries and local wood at the nearby markets just outside of the National land so you can enjoy campfire cooking and s’mores by the fire. Campsites book out early and require reservations from March 15th to November 15th. So be sure to book these spots a few months in advance if you’d like a specific weekend.

Chincoteague is the entrance to Assateague’s shoreline from the VA side. Once a summer, they have a pretty famous pony swim , where the local ponies swim across the water as thousands of spectators watch. There’s a ton of extra fun things going on in the area during this time, but it can also be quite crowded during this week.

As the home of the 1932 and 1980 Olympics, Lake Placid is an awesome, all-weather city in the heart of the Adirondacks. When you visit in the summer, be sure to climb one or a few of the famous 46 high peaks or paddle through the lakes and rivers that make Lake Placid one of the premiere paddling destinations of the Northeast.

During the winter, enjoy world class skiing, snowboarding, and ice sports. Then, settle down by the fire with a local bottle of wine at one of the amazing lake front hotels or one of our favorite Airbnbs. Lake Placid is one of our favorite trips from Scranton to get lost in the wild.

If you plan to visit during the fall, be prepared to drive very carefully because you will want to hang your head out the window uncontrollably for your entire trip through the Adirondacks, all while being mesmerized by the gorgeous colors that paint the olympic sized scenery.

Seriously, I’ve seen a lot of leaves change, but there’s just something about a deep fog hanging over the lake while the fall colors mirror onto the water and into the sky. When packing, bring extra camera batteries, memory sticks (cloud access if you’re in this century), and remember to spend time simply smelling the air and feeling alive.

When looking for food, we never went wrong with the homey breakfast nooks. For dinner, we thoroughly enjoyed Smoke Signals . They’re highly rated among visitors. Therefore, we suggest making a reservation or putting your name on the list as their wait times can be pretty gnarly depending on how crowded the town is when you’re visiting!

Difficult to get to but oh the seafood is so worth it. I am not sure what’s better about this little hook of heaven, the quaint villages or the picturesque sunrises that seem to be unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been. Be sure to check out the JFK and lighthouse museums while visiting.

Tim Horton, the Maple Leaves, and the space needle are staples of this city in Canada. Take a long drive for a long weekend and enjoy getting out of the USA for a little while to appreciate what’s different and what’s the same by just crossing the north border.

Catch a baseball or basketball game to experience American leagues with a Canadian twist and enjoy taking in the views of many filming locations of your favorite movies. If you didn’t know it’s much easier and cheaper to film in Canada so many of your US based movies were actually filmed in Canadian cities. In the winter, take in some of the world’s best skiing or snow sports!

Breweries and sunshine along the beach in the summer! Enjoy a walking brew tour or biking the city on a warm summer weekend. In the winter, take up an evening of ice skating, dog sledding, or cross country skiing on the many trails nearby. Beaches in New England with lighthouses, snow, and a nice glass of wine to warm you up is something you won’t want to miss. We think the ice bar is a novelty but fun to visit!

We have gathered a list of fun amusement parks, historic sites, educational museums, nature trails,and other exciting places the whole family can enjoy, all without going too far from home.

Hersheypark

Only an hour and two minutes away from Schuylkill County, Hersheypark is a combination of a chocolate lover’s paradise and thrill seeker’s nirvana. Every ticket includes more than 70 attractions, including 14 coasters, an entire water park, and access to ZooAmerica. After a fun day of rides, you can buy a bunch of chocolate and candy as souvenirs (though no guarantee the memorabilia will last the car ride home)! Buy your tickets here .

Lake Jean at Ricketts Glen State Park

Enjoy a beach trip only 55-minutes away from Mountain Top (that’s right, a beach in Pennsylvania!) Lake Jean offers a shallow lake to swim in with a sandy shore to relax in. You can also grab an ice cream cone at the concession stand to ensure maximum cool-off from the hot sun.

While you’re there, take time to view the incredible 21 waterfalls that Ricketts Glen offers. The full loop of the Falls Trail is 7.2 miles if you’re hiking both the upper and lower sections. For a lighter hike, take the Highland Trail for a 3.2-mile hike—don’t worry, you’ll still see a majority of the falls.

Phelps Mansion Museum

Journey back to the Gilded Era at the Phelps Mansion Museum—an excellent example of the talent of one of New York State’s most famous 19 th -century architects, Isaac G. Perry. Perry was also known for his work on the New York State Capitol, as well as many buildings in the Binghamton area. The house was constructed in 1870 and is filled with marble floors, exquisitely carved woodwork, period lighting fixtures, and period furniture.

Learn about Sherman D. Phelps and his house, which tells of a time when Binghamton was growing in wealth, culture, and population. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students, $5 for seniors (62 & older), and children 12 and younger are free. The museum is less than an hour away from Clarks Summit.

Hope Hill Lavender Farm

2375 Panther Valley Rd Pottsville, PA 17901

Surround yourself with the fresh aroma of lavender at the Hope Hill Lavender Farm (only an hour and away from White Haven!) while supporting a local business run by Wendy and Troy who purchased the farm back in 2004. The farm is open to the public from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. July is the best time to see the lavender fields in full bloom. Come back in August to see their acre of sunflowers in bloom.

You can take a farm tour to learn about the lavender, pollinator plants, and animals on the farm on Saturdays at 11:00 am for only $5 or take a free self-guided tour. You can even bring your furry friend and walk around the lavender fields (make sure your dog is on a leash). End the day by stopping at the farm store to buy an array of lavender scented products such as lotion, shampoo, lip balm, perfume, and honey. For more information, visit their website here .

Crystal Cave

Travel 125 feet underground and 145 years back in history! Crystal Cave is known for its abundance of crystalline formations scattered throughout its walls and ceilings. Take a one hour guided tour underground and learn about the geology and history of the cave. You can escape from the beaming rays of the sun as the cave temperature stays at a constant cool 54 degrees.

After exploring the cave, you can visit the many other attractions provided: Historic Inn & Gift Shop, Rock & Mineral Shop, Ice Cream Parlor, Miniature Golf Course, Café, Historic Museum & Trading Post, and Hiking Trail. Daniel Boone Homestead

If you’re a history buff, the Daniel Boone Homestead will fascinate you as you learn about the Revolutionary War, watch textile demonstrations, and hike throughout their trails. Admission is $7 for adults and $4 for children 5-15, or you can bring two non-perishable food items per person to be donated to the Keystone Military food bank in Shoemakersville, PA.

The Da Vinci Science Center is a museum of science and an educational institution with many hands-on and interactive exhibits related to science, technology, math, and engineering. This would be the perfect day trip to bring your little ones since the exhibits are designed to be fun and engaging for children younger than 12 years old. You don’t even have to travel far for this cool learning experience as it is only an hour away from Mountain Top.

Beltzville State Park

There’s almost nothing better than relaxing at the beach with your toes in the warm sand. What if I told you that you can have that beach trip without ever crossing state borders? That’s right, Beltzville State Park has a 949-acre lake with a sandy beach. Take your kids to this state park and make them feel like they’re at the beach! The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset. Plus, this tropical getaway is less than an hour away from Dallas, PA.

The Castle Fun Center

If you live in Pike County, we have just the destination for you to visit! The Castle Fun Center has a galore of activities perfect for a family trip. Ride Go Karts, play laser tag, roller skate, drive bumper cars, zip line, throw axes, rock climb, play mini golf, and get lost in their laser maze!

The State Museum of Pennsylvania

Bushkill Falls

A quick 57-minute car ride from Wilkes-Barre will lead you to Promised Land State Park—a 3,00-acre state park located on the Pocono Plateau, 1,800 feet above sea level. You can enjoy an array of activities: take a hike on Little Falls Trail, have fun in the sun at their beach, paddle a kayak on Promised Land Lake, fish at either of the park’s lakes, see the eagles nest from the Wildlife Observation Station, and spend the weekend at Pickerel Point Campground.

Take your family to visit America’s 5 th zoo to see an array of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. The National Museum of Industrial History

Steamtown National Historic Site Train Rides

Members news.

Train rides have officially returned to Steamtown National Historic Site (NHS) for the 2022 season! Rail experiences vary from short 30-minute trips exploring the park’s historic railroad yard to full-day trips through the Poconos.  Short train rides, the Scranton Limited and Caboose Experience, are offered Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The first excursion trip of the season will take place on Saturday, May 28 th to Jessup, PA allowing visitors to experience the annual Saint Ubaldo Day “Running of the Saints” (La Corsa dei Ceri).

New for the 2022 season, all ticket sales will be credit card only. Visitors are now able to purchase advance tickets for our summer excursions (May-Aug.) online through recreation.gov or on-site at our Information Kiosk during regular business hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, daily. Tickets for our short train rides, the Scranton Limited and Caboose Experience, are not available online or for advance purchase and must be purchased on-site at the Information Kiosk, the day of your visit. Those looking to plan for our autumn excursions (Sep.-Oct.), will be able to purchase tickets starting Friday, July 15 th .

Short Train Rides:

• The Scranton Limited or the Caboose Experience will operate on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, as staffing permits. Departure times are: 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, and 2:30pm.
• Tickets are $6 for adults and kids over the age of 5; kids 5 and under are free. Tickets must be purchased on-site at the Information Kiosk, the day of your visit.

On days we offer our longer excursion rides, the Caboose Experience will be offered in lieu of the Scranton Limited, as staffing permits.

It’s never too early to start your trip planning! Specific event information can be found by visiting the event calendar on the park website anytime. Station information and ticket pricing can be found on recreation.gov by searching “Steamtown National Historic Site.”

• The NPS has updated its masking guidance based on the CDC’s new COVID-19 Community Levels tool, which helps communities decide what prevention steps to take. Masking requirements in NPS buildings and on passenger coaches are based on local conditions. Updates are posted weekly, on Fridays, to www.nps.gov/stea.
• Train rides are subject to cancellation due to mechanical issues, inclement weather, or crew availability.

• The 1902 Roundhouse including the “Cut-a-Way” display;
• The 1937 Roundhouse;
• The Theater;
• The History Museum;
• The Technology Museum;
• Designated areas within the Railyard.

The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners continues to be paramount. While the listed areas are accessible for visitors to enjoy, services may be limited. The CDC has offered guidance to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. We will continue to monitor all park functions to ensure that visitors adhere to CDC guidance for mitigating risks associated with the transmission of COVID-19 and take any additional steps necessary to protect public health.

Located in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania, Steamtown NHS is open 9:00am to 5:00pm, daily. From Interstate-81 follow exit 185 (President Biden Expressway, formerly known as Central Scranton Expressway); then follow the brown and white signs to the park entrance at Lackawanna Avenue and Cliff Street (GPS: N 41.41, W 75.67). Common tour questions.

WHAT DOES PRICE INCLUDE?

1. Transportation : Round-trip via modern motorcoach, equipped with restroom, air-conditioning, tinted windows and public address system.

2. Accommodations : Your accommodations are chosen on the basis of location, value, cleanliness and dining facilities, where needed, and recommendations by past guests and tourism professionals.

We provide hotels and motels with rooming lists and they, in turn, make the room assignments.

Special requests are accommodated, when possible.

3. Sightseeing : All sightseeing tours, guides, and admissions are covered in the tour price as outlined in the itinerary, unless otherwise noted.

4. Baggage : Baggage service on all overnight trips is provided free of charge. Each person is allowed (1) one suitcase, not to weigh more than 45 pounds. A carry-on bag is permitted on the bus.

5. Tour Coordinator : When a single-day trip or multi-day tour is staffed by a tour coordinator, it is that person’s responsibility to handle all tour details while traveling. Please reach out to our tour coordinator with questions, issues and requests.

6. Meals : Meals are covered only where stated in the itinerary.

WHAT TOUR PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE:

1. Meals : Other than those listed in the itinerary. When a meal is not included in the overall price, it will be listed as “on your own.”

2. Gratuities : Every passenger is provided an envelope for a bus driver’s tip. At times, a collection may be taken for step-on guides or other guides provided by the destination.

3. Personal Expenses : Valet and room service, telephone calls and all other items of a personal nature.

CAN A PERSON BE DENIED TRAVEL?

Yes, Martz reserves the right to refuse to transport a person under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs or who is incapable of taking care of him/herself, or whose conduct is such or likely to be such as to make him or her objectionable to other passengers or prospective passengers, or who refuses to comply with any lawful rule or regulation of the carrier. Such persons may be removed from the bus at any usual stopping place or at such other place as the driver may select. In event of such removal, the liability of the carrier shall not exceed the amount of the fare paid by the passenger.

Exception: This rule does not apply to persons who are ill and accompanied by an attendant or nurse.

When is Payment Due for My Trip?

For single day trips, payment in full needs to be made at time of booking.

For multi da y trips, a $50 deposit is required with any booking and payment in full needs to be made 2 weeks prior to departure of trip.

MAY I LISTEN TO MUSIC ON DEVICES?

Yes, music devices and other electronic equipment are welcome on the bus when used courteously with other travelers. Music devices must be used with headphones and played at a low enough volume so as not to disturb other passengers or distract the bus driver. This is simply a matter of common courtesy that we must enforce for the comfort and safety of other passengers and the bus driver.

IS SMOKING ALLOWED ON THE BUS?

No. Federal law does not permit smoking on buses, including e-cigarettes.

MAY I USE MY CELL PHONE ON THE BUS?

Yes, but as a courtesy to other passengers, we prefer that you do not use your cell phone while traveling on the coach. Your cellphone should be set to vibrate. If you must use your cell phone, please limit your use to brief necessary calls only, and use it in a manner that does not interfere with other passengers or create a distraction for our driver. If your cell phone use disturbs other passengers or the driver, or if your cell phone continues to ring, the driver may ask you to turn off your cell phone. It is our goal to provide all of our passengers with the ability to rest comfortably and enjoy a safe and quiet ride while traveling with Martz.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

1. Reservations : Due to limits on the number of people who can be accommodated on our motorcoaches, and through hotel reservations, we suggest reservations be made at the earliest possible date. Reservations are handled on a first-come basis. Reservation is not confirmed until a deposit is received. We will accept names for wait lists, when possible.

2. Deposit/Payments : Payment in full is due at the time of booking for all single-day tours. Unless otherwise specificized, a 10 percent deposit per person is required to make reservations for a multi-day tour; 50 percent is due 60 days before the departure date, and payment in full is due 30 days prior to tour departure.

3. Bus Seating : While we try our best to accommodate all seating requests, we cannot guarantee you will be assigned the seat of your choice. Our online booking system automatically assigns seat numbers, but the seating arrangement may change before the departure date in order to accommodate those passengers with specific health and mobility needs.

4. Credit Cards : A 3-percent fee is levied on all credit card transactions.

5. Cancellation : All tour sales are final. There are no refunds. If you must cancel, we will attempt to sell your seat to someone on a wait list, but we offer no guarantees. Therefore, we suggest you purchase travel insurance.

6. Insurance : All passengers are insured while on the motorcoach only. Martz Tours is not responsible for lost, stolen, damaged articles or luggage.

7. Traveling Abroad : If Martz Tours travels outside of the United States, you will be required to produce a valid passport.

8. Identification : Some venues, including casinos, require guests to provide government-issued identification.

9. Responsibility : Martz Tours acts as selling agent for transportation services and non-transportation services (including but not limited to hotels/motels, restaurant, sightseeing and amusements) sold or arranged by it; and as selling agent assumes no responsibility and shall not be held responsible for any injuries, loss (including but not limited to loss or damage to baggage or property), damage, inconvenience, delays or any additional costs due to any cause whatsoever. We reserve the right to decline, accept or remove any person as a member of a tour whether before or after commencement of the tour, and we reserve the right, without notice, to change the arrangements or cancel a tour should conditions necessitate such change or cancellation.

10. Final Tour Information : Prior to departure, you will receive final tour information including your boarding times and location, itinerary, baggage tags, hotel names and telephone numbers, as well as other information needed to ensure an enjoyable experience.

11. Electronic Devices and Cell Phones : We welcome the use of electronic devices and cell phones on our buses. Please use headphones while operating to avoid disturbing other passengers.

12. Weapons : Weapons of any kind are not permitted on our motorcoaches.

Ukraine says extending use of Western arms will weaken Russia near border

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff said on Tuesday that using Western weapons to strike inside Russia was a vital decision that would affect Moscow’s tactical aviation and its capability to operate in border areas.

Following pressure from Ukraine and some of its European allies, the U.S. agreed last week to change its policy and allow Kyiv to strike inside Russia with Western weapons as part of its campaign to repel Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Kyiv said the step would help push back Russian advances and better defend territory in the northeast Kharkiv region.

“Permission to use Western weapons on the territory of the Russian Federation is a vital decision,” Andriy Yermak said on the Telegram messaging app.

“This will impact the conduct of the war, planning of counteroffensive actions, and will weaken Russians’ abilities to use their forces in the border areas.”

The decision would also help to better fend off Russian aerial attacks, Yermak said.

Ukraine has frequently targeted occupied Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, with Western-made weapons.

But outgunned and outmanned on the battlefield, Kyiv had pleaded with Washington to allow it to strike targets on Russian soil with U.S.-made weapons, as Moscow launched a new front in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city with about 1.3 million people, is just about 19 miles from the Russian border.

U.S. administration officials say the latest decision was narrowly tailored to the battle in the Kharkiv region. They say it allows Kyiv to use U.S.-supplied weapons to fire back against Russian forces “attacking them or preparing to attack them” from across the border.

Ukraine is also trying to develop its own weapons — mainly focusing on drones — to hit targets inside Russia. Some Ukrainian drones have attacked Russian oil facilities and military targets hundreds of kilometers away from the border.

One of the deepest attempted drone strikes was the attack on a long-range radar station in the city of Orsk, which is 1,115 miles from the Ukraine frontier.
