Optional visit to Maeshowe (Orkney Islands)

Maeshowe is a 5,000 year old burial mound, with an underground chamber (room) in the centre of the mound. To get inside the mound you have to bend down (to half your size) and shuffle along a low, narrow corridor (about 5 or 6 metres long). Once inside the chamber (room) you can stand up. You go in with a guide, and only about 18 people at a time can go in. It’s a bit like going inside one of the pyramids, in Egypt. It costs about £8.50 per person to go on this guided tour. They can only take a limited number of people each day, so it’s quite difficult to get booked in. We have to book people in, a fair bit in advance. So, if you book on our tour, and would like to do the optional visit to Maeshowe burial mound, please let John Howie know at least 2 months in advance, and he will try to get you booked in.

Optional Andre Rieu concert, in Maastricht

It is difficult to get tickets for Andre Rieu’s annual concerts in the Vrijthof Square, Maastricht. John Howie will endeavour to purchase suitable tickets, on behalf of Extension Tour group members wishing to attend this concert. He will endeavour to get ‘Rank 3’ tickets (Sections B1 & B2... LH & RH sides of the middle section). Our tour groups have been happy with these tickets, in the past. In 2023 these tickets were €95 (plus a bit more for incidental expenses such as credit card charges).

Included in the extension pre-tour:

  • 2 nights’ accommodation in first-class hotel, or moderate first-class hotel, in Maasmechelen (near Maastricht), with private facilities, on twin-share basis; 2 nights’ accommodation in first-class hotel, or moderate first-class hotel, in Amsterdam, with private facilities, on twin-share basis.
  • Tour leadership by John Howie. Craig Giles and Roz Giles will be accompanying the tour group on the Extension Tour, providing we get a reasonable number of bookings on the Extension Tour. Please note: John, Craig, & Roz will not be attending the Andre Rieu concert.
  • Breakfast daily & 1 dinner.
  • Orientation tour of Brussels. Sightseeing coach tour of Maastricht & surrounding region, with local guide. Sightseeing coach our of Amsterdam, with local guide.
  • One hour evening canal cruise, in Amsterdam.

THE COMPLETE CITY GUIDE TO DUBLIN, IRELAND

The Complete Guide To Dublin, Ireland

Ireland is a gorgeous island nation located just west of England and Scotland. The capital, Dublin, is the gateway to Ireland, and you cannot skip it on your Ireland Itinerary.

Dublin is a must-visit home to some of the world’s best pubs, friendly locals, and plenty to see. This ultimate guide to Dublin will go over everything you need to know for your trip – the best places to stay, where to eat, what to do, how to get around, and more.

I hope that this post, which is all about your ultimate guide to Dublin, Ireland, helps you plan the best trip ever.

Where To Stay In Dublin

Since Dublin is a major city, you will find every type of hotel within the city. I have organized these Dublin hotels into budget, mid-range, and luxury options.

Luxury Dublin Hotels

  • The Fitzwilliam Hotel – The Fitzwilliam Hotel is as fancy as it sounds. The elegant decor, top-notch service, and Michelin-star restaurant will make you feel like a celebrity. If you are looking for luxury in the city’s center, look no further than the stunning Fitzwilliam Hotel.
  • The Merrion Hotel – The Merrion Hotel in the center of Dublin is a proud member of the World’s Leading Hotels. The hotel is a restored Georgian townhouse and is home to a two-Michelin-star restaurant and a spectacular bar. You can find a luxurious stay at the Merrion Hotel in Dublin.

Mid-Range Dublin Hotels

  • Motel One Dublin – Motel One is a lovely mid-range hotel option in Dublin. I stayed here and thought everything was wonderful. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the location was great (within walking distance to all of Dublin’s main attractions), and the staff were friendly and helpful.
  • Wren Urban Nest – Located in the Temple Bar District, The Wren Urban Nest is a modern hotel that will exceed your expectations. The Wren Urban Nest has a restaurant, bar, comfortable rooms, and stylish decor.

Budget Dublin Hotels

  • Clink i Lar – Clink i Lar is great if you are looking for a hostel in Dublin. You will find daily tours, restaurants, bars, and a great social scene at Clink i Lar.
  • Harcourt Hotel – The Harcourt Hotel is perfect if you are looking for a budget-friendly option that is not a hostel. Located near the fabulous St. Stephen’s Green, Trinity College, and Grafton Street, The Harcourt Hotel is in the perfect location. You can also find a restaurant and bar at the Harcourt Hotel.

Best Tours To Take In Dublin

Tours enhance your trip because you learn so much more and get taken to secret spots. These are my favorite tours in Dublin.

  • Cliffs Of Moher Day Trip From Dublin – The Cliffs of Moher are an absolute must-visit in Ireland. While the Cliffs are on the western coast of Ireland, they are still a doable day trip from Dublin. It is easiest to do a  tour to see them.
  • Guinness Storehouse: Entrance Ticket – Every year, more than one million people visit the Guinness Storehouse to discover the history of Guinness Stout and savor a complimentary pint on a self-guided tour.
  • Jameson Whiskey Distillery Tour with Tastings – Discover the secrets of crafting authentic Irish whiskey on a guided tour of the historic Jameson Distillery in Dublin, followed by a comparative whiskey tasting.
  • Pub Crawl – Join a guided pub crawl and experience the best of Dublin’s nightlife. Visit fantastic pubs, enjoy free Guinness, free shots, drinks discounts, great live music, skip the lines, and get VIP nightclub entry.

What To Do In Dublin

Dublin and its surrounding areas have lots of things to do and see, everything from the world-famous Guinness storehouse to Temple Bar and cliff walks.

Here are ten of the best things to do and see in Dublin.

1) Walk across Ha’Penny Bridge

The Ha’Penny Bridge is a quick stop but also a must-visit in Dublin. The footbridge connects the northern part of Dublin to the Temple Bar District. Built in May of 1816 the Ha’Penny Bridge is a Dublin staple and a great photo op, you cannot miss it.

2) Visit Trinity College

Trinity College was one of my favorite parts of Dublin; it is one of the most beautiful college campuses I have ever visited. Located within walking distance of the famous Grafton Street and stunning St. Stephens Green, Trinity College is fantastic. The cobblestone footpaths, green spaces, vines covering the buildings, and top-notch facilities make Trinity College a student’s dream. I recommend bringing a book and enjoying the sunshine in the green spaces if you have spare time.

4) Book Of Kells

Located in Trinity College, The Book of Kells is a medieval manuscript that illustrates the four gospels. People travel worldwide to visit the Book Of Kells because it is one of the only treasures left of its kind. The Book Of Kells contains the four accounts of Christ’s life that can be found in the New Testament.

Be sure to book your tickets online to see the Instagram-famous Trinity College Library and the Book of Kells because tickets will sell out. I ended up waiting two hours because I did not book ahead.

5) Grafton Street

A quick walk away from Trinity College is Grafton Street. Grafton Street is the best street in Dublin for shopping, walking, and watching talented street performers (Ed Sheeran used to play on Grafton Street). While on Grafton Street, grab a souvenir – I always grab a sticker.

Don’t be afraid to stray off of Grafton Street into the side streets. Adorable side streets off of Grafton are perfect for a photo. St.Annes Street is stunning!

6) Visit Dublin Castle

The Dublin Castle is home to ancient artifacts, stunning architecture, and plenty to see. Some of my favorite things that I saw were the paintings on the ceiling of St. Patrick’s Hall, eighteenth-century Italian paintings, The Viceregal Throne, and the lion sculptures in the courtyard of the castle. The Dublin Castle is a must-visit in Dublin if you are interested in Ireland’s history or art.

7) Christ Church Cathedral

Just a few steps away from the Dublin Castle is the Christ Church Cathedral. The Christ Church Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Cathedral built in 1030 by the king of Dublin’s Vikings, Sitric. It is amazing to think that this Church has stood in Dublin for almost 1,000 years.

The Christ Church Cathedral is a quick visit, but totally worth it.

8) St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Built-in 1191, St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the national cathedral of the Church of Ireland. The Gothic cathedral was one of my favorite things to see in Dublin. Both the interior and exterior of the cathedral are absolutely stunning. I thought the most notable features of St. Patrick’s Cathedral were the stained glass windows and the knights’ helmets.

You can buy tickets to see the inside of the Cathedral upon arrival; they will set you back about ten euros.

9) Drink a Guinness at the Guinness Storehouse

Believe it or not, Guinness Storehouse is Ireland’s top tourist attraction. While I am not a huge beer fan, I would still recommend you visit Guinness Storehouse . You will learn so much about beer, get to visit the Gravity Bar (stunning views of Dublin), get a Guinness, do a Guinness tasting and learn why beer is so popular in Ireland at the Guinness Storehouse.

10) Have a drink at Temple Bar

A trip to Dublin is not complete without visiting the world-famous Temple Bar. Temple Bar is a Dublin staple and is a perfect place to get a photo and listen to the almost always playing live Irish music. You can enjoy a Guinness and some traditional Irish food during your time at the Temple Bar.

11) Howth Cliff Walk

If you have a little extra time in Dublin, then be sure to check out Howth Cliff Walk. Only 30 minutes away from Dublin by train is a small seaside village called Howth, and it has a lovely hike – comparable to the Cliff of Moher. So, visit Howth if you want to add a bit of nature to your city trip.

Best Dining Spots In Dublin

Breakfast in dublin.

Dublin is home to a lovely cafe culture.

  • Vice Inc. Coffee – Vice Inc. Coffee is located in northern Dublin. It is a great spot for an afternoon coffee as it opens later and can be found in the back of a bar called Wigmens. Don’t let this fool you, Vice serves up specialty lattes and insanely good Irish coffee.
  • Legit Coffee Company – Legit Coffee Company is the best brunch spot in Dublin. Located in Dublin’s Liberty neighborhood, Legit Coffee Company serves primarily French food as the chef is French. Legit strides to bring all people together.
  • Proper Order Coffee – Proper Order Coffee is perfect if you are looking for a quick coffee or pastries. The hole-in-the-wall coffee joint is great for grabbing food or getting work done.

Lunch and Dinner In Dublin

  • The Brazen Head – You can’t go to Dublin without going to a pub. When it comes to pubs in Dublin, The Brazen Head is a local favorite. You can find great pub food, and The Brazen Head is Ireland’s oldest bar. Even if you are not looking to eat or drink, the Brazen Head is worth a visit.
  • Etto  – If you are looking for a fancy dinner in Dublin, then Etto is a lovely choice. Etto is located in the center of Dublin and serves up some amazing seafood with Italian influence. Etto has a cozy atmosphere and is a lovely dinner option in Dublin.
  • Wilde – Wilde is an aesthetically pleasing restaurant located on the quaint Harry Street in Dublin. With tons of natural light and elegant decor, Wilde is definitely Insta-worthy. Wilde is a steakhouse that serves it all; it is on the more expensive end.

Getting Around Dublin

Dublin is a walkable city! I did not use the train or taxis at all while in Dublin.

If you are not a walking fan, you can take the bus, DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport), or Luas (the tram).

I used the DART to get to Howth – it was easy and inexpensive. There are thirty-one DART stations in Dublin, so you will not have to walk far to find a station. You can find train times and destinations on the DART website .

The Luas, a tram, is an inexpensive way to get around Dublin. It is a hop-on-hop-off system that goes all around the city. The Luas can get a bit crowded so be sure to plan ahead. You can find more of the Luas timetables and routes on the Luas website .

The bus is another great option if you are looking to save a bit of money. Check out the bus routes and times . If you are looking for a simpler way to get to all the most popular tourist attractions, I recommend booking the hop-on, hop-off bus tour .

When To Visit Dublin

I love Dublin year-round. Most people opt to visit in the summer, which is lovely but don’t overlook the fall, winter, and spring in Dublin. There is something magical about a rainy day in Dublin. Cozying up in a cafe or strolling the chilly streets feels right in Dublin – more authentic.

If you visit Dublin during the holidays, you will experience the fabulous holiday decor. The winter does not get too cold in Ireland. While it definitely gets cold, it is never as bad as Slavic countries or northern parts of the USA and Canada during winter.

The summer is beautiful in Ireland, just be prepared for crowds and high prices.

Great hike to Wicklow Head with Gateway to Ireland Tours.

Diana is an awesome guide with great stories about the area and local wildlife. She really feels the audience and sets the hike’s pace accordingly. I was there with my 10-year old kid. He was happy – the best indication of the quality.

Fantastic way to explore Irish history and natural beauty in just one day

It was an amazing day that exceeded all expectations!

We have visited 3 key sights of the area: Hill of Tara, Bective Abbey and Trim Castle. The tour was perfectly planned and balanced. We delved into Ireland’s history with an enthusiastic guide Diana who added depth to the experience. The guide’s knowledge and passion were evident throughout, ensuring a comfortable and informative journey.

This tour is a fantastic way to explore Irish history and natural beauty in just one day.

We left with a deep appreciation for Ireland’s heritage and cherished memories. Highly recommended!

Experiential learning, with passion and care.

It was the perfect day! Not only did the weather cooperate, Diana, our tour guide with Gateway To Ireland, was a delight! Well versed on all of Ireland’s rich history, extremely knowledgeable on all the sites we toured and a pleasure to be with for the day!

Highly recommended

Had a wonderful time with Diana. She was informative and fun. Her knowledge of the area was very evident. She is also extremely knowledgeable of the areas plants and birds. My husband and I enjoyed a hike along the sea with wonderful views of the cliffs and water. We also saw seals with their pups. The scenery was very impressive. It was a great hike. We felt like we got to see a whole other part of Ireland. The length of the tour was perfect. We were looking for something that took us out of Dublin but didn’t require an exhausting 12 hour+ day. We returned refreshed and in time for dinner. It was perfect. I would not hesitate to take another tour with Diana.

Sunday hike with a view and in great company

We had a lovely Sunday experience together with Diana at Wicklow Cliff Walk. She is a great organiser and a passionate person interested in what she is doing. Diana met us in Dublin and drove us to a convenient starting point. The pace of the hike was customised to our group so we had plenty of time for enjoying the views, watching birds and grey seals.

Highly Recommend, 3 historical stops

Highly recommend! Amazing day spent with the sweet, attentive, and very knowledgeable Diana. This off the beaten path tour is a delight. Diana drove/guided my husband and I to the Hill of Tara, Bective Abbey and Trim Castle. We loved every minute, making three different historical stops in total. I sincerely appreciated how Diana asked us about our interests, so that she could personalize the day. Loved having tea/coffee and scones sat on a historical wall overlooking the Bective Abbey (chair was optional) and surrounding pastoral lands. We made sure to have our tennis shoes/hiking boots on, as the grasses were wet and a bit muddy; it was great fun getting up close and personal with over 5,000 years of Irish history. Also I was impressed how communicative she was prior to the trip; I felt in good hands from the minute I booked. Would not change a thing; bravo Diana for creating a fun enlightening trip.

Diana mastered the story telling in her adopted country of Ireland and was able to guide our group of 4 US citizens ( one with an Irish grandmother and deep roots) to a delightful informative tour of the country side of Ireland outside of Dublin. We loved spending the time wtih her personally driving us thru the gardens and countryside safely and of good cheer and many fun stores to share about each location.. all new info to us ( even tho my 3rd time in Ireland). We recommend you try out her service to see and learn about different parts of Ireland. Most importantly, she cares with TLC and chock full of info./history.

Excellent Private Tour

Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough, Powerscourt My husband and I spent the day on a private scenic tour of Powerscourt Garden and waterfall, the Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough, and Guinness Lake with our amazing guide Diana. She is extremely knowledgeable, and coordinated the details (hotel pick-up, restaurant for lunch, and photos of us). We highly recommend her private tours for 2-4 travelers. It was truly a highlight of our trip!

Diana was excellent! She sensed the right level of information for us. We moved at a comfortable rate. She checked on us to be sure we were doing okay, if there was anything we needed. She provided a few options to personalize our trip. She knew all the best places to take the best pictures. Would take a tour with Diana again!!

Great way to experience the mountains and countryside from Dublin

We absolutely loved our tour. So easy from Dublin to see the Wicklow mountains and experience another part of Ireland. We loved seeing the lakes, the lunch spot was incredible, and Diana shared so many interesting historical facts and stories with us. Diana was a great guide and so knowledgeable, plus she took pictures of our group which was so nice. We would do this again should we return to Ireland!

Fantastic Private Tour Experience!

Diana offered a fantastic experience to Cashel Rock, as well as private tour at the local village museum by the owner, and a castle tour. She is a wonderful host and knowledgeable. She is diligent and committed to providing a premiere tour experience starting with our pick up at our hotel. We will be back, and we will be booking with Diana in the future. We loved all the sites we visited, learned a lot, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Very well done and a highly valued experience. Many thanks!

Best 2 Days in Dublin Itinerary (Locals Guide + Map)

I have lived in Dublin for 35 years. This guide contains 2  tried and tested  itineraries for spending 2 days in Dublin that  I’m confident you’ll love !

Both itineraries have been meticulously planned to ensure that you follow a logical route . Here is an overview of each one:

  • Itinerary 1 (best for first-time visitors): Explore the best things to do in Dublin City over 48 hours
  • Itinerary 2 (best for those that have been here before): See beyond the city limits and explore Dublin’s coast

Some key info before spending 2 days in Dublin

Before I dive into the different Dublin in 2 days itinerary guides, there are a few need-to-knows worth considering first.

1. Dublin City is walkable

Dublin is  very  walkable. However, this can lead some people into a false sense of security. It’s walkable, but you need to be walking in the right direction… Having a logical  itinerary is key to making the best use of your 48 hours in Dublin!

2. Pick a central base

If you’ve read our where to stay in Dublin guide, you’ll know that picking the right base is important, both from a safety and a convenience perspective. Our preferred locations are around St Stephen’s Green , Ballsbridge and The Liberties.

3. Don’t rent a car

So, I have two itineraries below – the first doesn’t require a car ( renting a car in Dublin generally isn’t needed). The second does, if you include the Ticknock Hike. If you avoid the hike, you can use public transport for getting around Dublin .

4. Save with the Dublin Pass

If you’re doing Dublin in 2 days, the Dublin Pass is a no brainer. You buy the pass for around €69 and you get access to the city’s main attractions, like the Guinness Storehouse and the Jameson Distillery. You can easily save from €62.50, depending on how many places you visit.

An overview of our 48 hours in Dublin itineraries

I’m going to give you a quick overview of our different 2 days in Dublin itinerary guides, so you can see what each one involves.

The itineraries vary massively – one uses public transport while the other uses a rental car. Both take you to different sides of the county, too.

Itinerary 1: The tourist favourite

Our first 48 hours in Dublin itinerary will take you around the most popular attractions in the city centre.

You’ll be walking between the different sites and visiting old-school pubs and great places to eat.

Itinerary 2: The explorer’s favourite

This itinerary will take you beyond the city’s limits and show you a different side to Dublin – you’ll hike, soak up views of the city and visit some gorgeous towns and villages. A car is  needed if you’re doing the hike on day 1. You can avoid the need of a car by skipping the hike!

Day 1 of itinerary 1

what to do in dublin for 2 days

Our first itinerary revolves around Dublin City Centre and it’s main attractions. This is ideal for those of you visiting for the first time.

On day 1, you’ll eat great food, visit some of the top museums in Dublin and polish off your day in some traditional pubs.

09:00: Trinity College

Trinity College

Take the ramble over to Trinity College – it’s here that you’ll find the Book of Kells exhibit. It is strongly suggested that you book in advance, as this is a popular tour.

Trinity was founded by Queen Elizabeth I of England way back in 1592. The grounds are a joy to stroll around thanks to its impressive architecture. However, the main attraction here is The Long Room .

This breath-taking library was built between 1712 and 1732 and it’s home to 200,000+ of Trinity’s oldest books.

If you’re wondering what to do in Dublin for 2 days that’ll live on in your memory for ever more, get yourself to The Long Room.

11:00: Temple Bar

Temple Bar on St Patrick's Day

When you leave Trinity you’re a handy 8-minute walk to the well-trodden streets of Temple Bar .

This area is popular with tourists and has iconic cobbled streets, pubs, and boutiques where you can purchase souvenirs and necessities alike.

There are endless pubs in Temple Bar that you can nip into later in the day, if you like, but try not to get distracted just yet!

11:15: The Ha’penny Bridge

Ha’penny Bridge

You’ll find the Ha’penny Bridge just 2 minutes from Temple Bar. This is a historic cast-iron bridge that spans the River Liffey.

This was Dublin’s original toll bridge and it takes its name from the cost of cross it back when it was built in 1800s – a ha’penny!

You’ll see its image plastered across countless postcards and tourism adverts. You’ll be crossing it to get to the next stop in this Dublin in 2 days itinerary.

11:35: GPO Tour

GPO

Our next stop is a handy 6-minute walk away. Now, you don’t see the GPO in many guides to Dublin, for some reason. However, it’s home to history-by-the-boat-load.

It’s on the incredible GPO Witness History Tour that you’ll discover the many events that took place around the 1916 Easter Rising , and it’s a sombre reminder of a not too distant past.

Located on historic O’Connell Street , it’s a very handy option for those of you wondering what to do in Dublin for 2 days if the weathers terrible!

14:15: Lunch in Dublin’s Oldest Pub

Brazen Head

Our next stop takes us on a 20-minute walk down the quays to the oldest pub in Dublin –  The Brazen Head .

Dating back to the 12th century, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time when you stroll through its doors.

Particularly impressive in winter when the fire is blazing away, it was frequented by famous figures such as James Joyce and Brendan Behan.

Get in and grab a bit of lunch to tide you over for the rest of day 1 of your 48 hours in Dublin.

15:00: Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral

Our next stop is a short 7-minute walk from the Brazen Head and it’s arguably one of the most beautiful buildings you’ll come across in this 2 days in Dublin itinerary (along with the nearby St Patrick’s Cathedral ).

First constructed from stone in the early 11th century, Christ Church Cathedral has been remodelled several times over the years.

It now houses different exhibits, incredible stained-glass windows, and if you dare to venture into the crypt you’ll even see a mummy or two.

15:40: The Guinness Storehouse

Guinness Storehouse

Coffins, crypts, and creepy things aside, it’s time to warm up inside and out, and that means taking the 15-minute walk to the Guinness Storehouse !

St. James’s Gate has been home to Guinness since 1837 and is where you can take their tasting experience to gain a new appreciation for the art of brewing.

There’s also a rooftop bar with magnificent views of the city! Booking is essential.

17:30: Time to relax

Having been all over the city, it’s time to set yourself down for a little bit before dinner and an evening on the town.

Either head back to your accommodation, or you can always stroll through the nearby Phoenix Park , along the River Liffey, or keep a seat warm in one of the many Dublin pubs .

Accommodation recommendation:  Struggling to decide where to stay while doing Dublin in 2 days? See our guide to the best Dublin hotels !

18:45: Dinner

Trocadero

Although some people would lead you to believe otherwise, Dublin excels when it comes to food.

The city has a nice, diverse foodie scene, with everything from African and Thai to Vietnamese, Italian and Greek. There’s also some excellent Irish restaurants in Dublin to sample, too.

20:00: Traditional Dublin pubs

Dublin Pubs

Two days in Dublin is plenty of time to explore some of Dublins pub scene. I only ever recommend old-school, historic pubs.

I’ve put together an old-school Dublin pub crawl guide (complete with a handy Google Map) that’ll take you to some of the oldest pubs in Dublin .

Day 2 of itinerary 1

The second day in this 2 days in Dublin itinerary is filled with interesting and unusual attractions, and plenty of great food and drink.

Below, you’ll find everything from Dublin Castle and one of the finest whiskey distilleries in Dublin to some more brilliant museums.

09:00: The Molly Malone Statu e

Molly Malone

Our first stop of the day is a quick pitstop for some history. I’m talking, of course, about the famous Molly Malone statue near O’Neill’s Pub on Suffolk Street.

This statue has graced the cover of a million postcards and the song of the same name has been bellowed out for hundreds of years.

09:30: Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle

Barely a 10-minute walk from Molly is Dublin Castle . It was built in the 13th century and, like many castles in Ireland , it underwent numerous renovations and expansions.

Those with an eye for architecture will notice hints of medieval, Georgian, and Gothic styles during their visit.

Explore the grounds, first, then take the tour to discover the sites Viking past. This is one of the most popular stops in this 2 days in Dublin itinerary.

11:00: Chester Beatty Museum

Chester Beatty

The Chester Beatty Museum is located on the grounds of Dublin Castle and it’s here you’ll find one of the greatest collections in the country.

Beatty was a New York mining magnate and he donated countless pieces of artwork, manuscripts, and historic pieces to the people of Ireland.

The museum collections are from China, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, India, Iran, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

They are considered to be world-class and include Egyptian Books of the Dead, Chinese woodblock prints, and date as far back as 2700 BC.

12:00: St. Patrick’s Cathedral

St Patrick’s Cathedral

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a 10-minute walk from our previous stop. This stunning building dates from the early 1200s and it really is a sight to behold.

Take your time to wander around the outside of the Cathedral, first, noting the flying buttresses, stained glass windows and Gothic features.

When you’re ready, the magnificent interior awaits. Remember that this is a place of worship, so behave accordingly.

12:25: Marsh’s Library

Marsh's Library

Photos by James Fennell via Failte Ireland

Located next door to the Cathedral is one of the hidden gems in this 48 hours in Dublin guide.

Marsh’s Library is Ireland’s oldest and it was opened in 1707.

It’s arguably best known for its beautifully unique interior, which has been preserved in its original state.

13:30: Lunch

Irish food for st patrick's day

After a full morning of exploring, it’s time to grab a bite-to-eat. Head to The Fumbally – it’s a 7-minute walk away.

There’s a great lunch menu here with something to tickle even the fussiest of tastebuds.

15:00: Teeling Whiskey tour

Teeling’s Whiskey

The Teeling Whiskey Distillery is around a 5-minute walk from the last stop! Dublin’s newest Irish whiskey distillery is also extremely popular with both locals and visitors alike.

Take one of their whiskey tasting tours and gain a new appreciation for the craft of whiskey distilling.

If you’d like to squeeze a different whiskey tour into your 48 hours in Dublin, the Jameson Distillery tour is a 20-minute walk away on Bow St.

17:30: Chill time

Stephen's Green

You’ve explored much of the southern sights in Dublin city, and it’s time to put your feet up for a while. Head back to your digs and recoup for a bit.

Or, work up an appetite by taking a stroll through any of the nearby parks, like St. Stephen’s Green , the Phoenix Park , or the Iveagh Gardens before heading out for a bite to eat.

Now, depending on which of the  many  hotels in Dublin you’re staying in, you’ll have a fair number of dining options to choose from.

If you fancy a great steak, see our guide to the best steak in Dublin . Or, for something more casual, see our guide to the best burger in Dublin .

20:00: Old school Dublin pubs

The Celt

And that’s a wrap on our first 2 days in Dublin. If you didn’t make it to the previous night’s recommendations, be sure to check them out tongiht.

Or, you can follow our Dublin pub crawl guide if you want a route to stick to.

Day 1 of itinerary 2

Dublin in 48 hours

Our second 48 hours in Dublin itinerary is completely different to the first and, while it uses the city as a base, it takes you up and down Dublin’s coast.

This Dublin 2 day itinerary will suit those of you that have visited the city before and who are looking to see a different side to the capital.

Now, you’ll need a rental car for this one (see our guide to renting a car in Ireland without the stress). This itinerary will show you a side of Dublin that many tourists miss.

08:00: Drive from the city to Malahide

Malahide Village

A mere 30 minutes drive from central Dublin on the N1/M50, Malahide sits to the north and boasts the beautiful Malahide Castle and Gardens, a harbour and beaches.

It’s also an ideal location for those needing quick and convenient access to Dublin’s airport. Park at Malahide Beach and take the short walk into the village.

08:45: Breakfast in Malahide village

breakfast

While there are some excellent restaurants in Malahide for you to choose from, there are three names that immediately come to mind for breakfast.

The Greenery (near Malahide Beach – there’s a handy car park here too!), McGovern’s and Deja Vu are all great options.

09:40: Malahide Castle

Malahide Castle

Fuelled up and ready to explore, walk through the village and past the DART station and you’ll find the entrance to the castle on the left.

Malahide Castle has a dramatic 800 year history that is bound to enthral, a butterfly house that amazes, and also 260 acres of verdant parkland for you to discover.

Do book tickets in advance, as this site is popular, especially in summer. There’s plenty of other things to do in Malahide , like Malahide Beach and the coastal walk to Portmarnock.

11:40: Drive to Howth

Howth cliff walk maps

The seaside village of Howth is a quick 20 min drive away and it’s one of the highlights of this Dublin 2 day itinerary guide.

The village is arguably best known for its busy harbour, which is where you’ll want to park up.

12:45: Grab something tasty from Howth Market

Howth Market

Photos via Howth Market on FB

Come hungry is the best advice on offer as this market is as extensive as it is mouth-watering, with a range of stalls offering everything from tasty treats to meats and cheeses.

You’ll find it right across from the DART station.

13:15: Do the Howth Cliff Walk or saunter along the pier

walks in howth

The Howth Cliff Walk is one of my favourite walks in this 2 days in Dublin itinerary. There are several routes that range from 1.5 to 3.5 hours.

The good news is that each will give you spectacular views out to sea, and over towards Dublin.

If you don’t fancy a long walk, there’s plenty of other things to do in Howth .

15:00: Lunch in Howth village

King Sitric

Photos via King Sitric on FB

With your walk complete, it’s time to return to Howth for lunch. Now, if you fancy something casual, there’s lots of pubs in Howth offering casual pub grub.

If you fancy something a bit more formal, there’s some great restaurants in Howth worth checking out, like Aqua, which is located on the pier.

16:30: Bull Wall

the bull wall

From Howth, you’re a handy 20-minute drive from our next stop.

The small spit of land in the photos above is North Bull Island and is home to the North Bull Island Nature Reserve.

Cross over the the wooden bridge, and find a spot to park. There are beautiful views of the city, and Dollymount Beach is a nice spot to dip your feet in while enjoying an ice cream or coffee.

17:30: Chill time

Time to head for ‘home’ and make your way back to the city, which is only a 20-minute drive from North Bull Island. Cross back over the wooden bridge, and head southwest around the shoreline via Clontarf .

Either rest up at your base, or take in some of the city’s nighttime sights, like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Ha’Penny Bridge (it looks great at night!), or Temple Bar.

Etto

Having spent the first 24 hours of this 2 days in Dublin itinerary outside of the city, it’s time to sample some of the city’s restaurants.

If you fancy something swanky, see out guide to the finest Michelin Star restaurants in Dublin . If you’d like to see a good mix of places worth trying, hop into our Dublin food guide .

Darkey Kellys

As was the case with our other 2 days in Dublin itinerary guides, I’m going to polish off the evening in a cosy pub.

If you’d like to saunter around some old-school pubs, see our Dublin pub crawl guide. If you follow it, you’ll visit 6 very old pubs all near each other.

Day 2 of itinerary 2

The final day of this 2 days in Dublin itinerary takes us out to south Dublin, where you’ll be treated to glorious coastal views on a number of walks.

There’s also some great food to be had, a stunning beach to saunter along and some very  fancy houses.

10:30: Drive to Ticknock

Dublin Mountains

The Ticknock Walk is arguably one of the best walks in Dublin , and it’s a handy 25 to 30-minute drive from the city centre.

The walk here follows a steep path to the summit of Ticknock, in the Dublin Mountains . It’s a reasonably moderate walk and the views of the city are outstanding.

13:00: Lunch in Dalkey

Dalkey

Having worn you out on Dublin’s Mountains, it’s time to head downhill to Dalkey . Fortunately, there’s some brilliant restaurants in Dalkey .

Two of our favourites are Benito’s Italian Restaurant; a seasonal menu that features pizza, pasta, etc.

Or, DeVille’s, which is upmarket and more in the fine dining category, but is renowned for its seafood chowder and beef Bourguignon.

14:30: More views from Killiney Hill

Killiney Hill

It’s time to head back uphill to take in some more magnificent scenery, this time on the Killiney Hill Walk .

If there’s only one walk you do during your 2 days in Dublin, make sure it’s this one.

Park in the nearby car park, and make your way up the 20-minute-long path to see what all the fuss is about.

Don’t miss out on seeing the Obelisk, or the Pyramid of Dublin!

15:30: Coffee and a paddle

Killiney

What better way to rest tired feet than to dip them in the sea?!

Making your way down to Killiney Beach , you can park nearby the beach and grab a coffee and ice cream from Fred and Nancy’s (an iconic seafront cafe with snacks and drinks).

Sit back, relax, and take in the air that comes blowing fresh off the Irish Sea.

17:00: Chill time

parks in Dublin

As the final day of your 2 days in Dublin draws to a close, you’ll return to central Dublin and your accommodation (see our Dublin hotels guide for great places to stay).

But, when you’re ready, it’s time to make the most of your last night in the city, so wear something comfy on those feet, there’s still so much to do!

PHX Bistro

Dublin really is a foodie haven. On the last night of this Dublin 2 day itinerary, treat yourself to something tasty.

If you fancy a beaut of a burger or some of the best steak in town, head to PHX Bistro – its never fails to deliver!

16 Delightful Things to Do in Dublin 2024

Updated September 17, 2023

If you think Dublin is all bars and Guinness, then… well, you aren’t wrong exactly, but Ireland’s capital is way more than its nightlife. Yes, the beer is excellent—but Dublin is also home to tons of unique attractions like book markets, artsy neighborhoods, and even some of Ireland’s most impressive castles and churches. Locals helped us create this list of 17 delightful things to do in Dublin, Ireland.

#1: Explore the hipster-fabulous Temple Bar district

Exploring Temple Bar is one of the coolest things to do in Dublin Ireland

The riverside district of Temple Bar is gorgeous—full of cobblestone streets, old stone buildings, and colorful facades—and it has the highest density of bars in Dublin. This means that once the sun goes down, Temple Bar is the place to start your night. First things first: make a beeline to the iconic, fire-engine-red Temple Bar pub . It’s been around since the 19th century, and tourists aside, it’s a long-time favorite for good beer and live music.

That said, Temple Bar has a lot more to offer than just pubs. The neighborhood is full of restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries, which reflect its artsy, creative vibe. Perched on the banks of the River Liffey , it’s also an especially picturesque part of town. Explore it to your heart’s content!

#2: Search for treasures at the Temple Bar Book Market

And speaking of Temple Bar: at sunrise on Saturdays and Sundays (ok, 11 AM, same difference after a night out), the centrally-located Temple Bar Square transforms from artsy party paradise into The Temple Bar Book Market—a bibliophile's utopia.

The market is relatively small—six or seven stalls, covered with white canvas—but it’s swimming with treasures. From books by Dublin authors like James Joyce and Samuel Beckett to old maps, postcards, and other fun knick-knacks, there’s a little something for everyone. If you dig flea markets and you’re keen to get a bit off-the-beaten-path while you’re in Ireland, check it out. All told Temple Bar’s combo of nightlife and culture makes it one of the best places to stay in Ireland.

Feeling inspired? Continue your Dublin literary journey by checking out the small but mighty Dublin Writers Museum , or Sweny’s Pharmacy from James Joyce’s Ulysses .

#3: Start your day with a Full Irish Breakfast

Enjoying a full Irish breakfast is one of the best things to do in Dublin Ireland

Bacon, sausage, beans, eggs, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, potatoes, black pudding… ok, so you might not want to start every day in Dublin with a full Irish breakfast, but you need to try it at least once while you’re in town. It’s not just one of the most delicious things to do in Ireland (and a great choice after a night spent pub-hopping)—it’s a cultural institution.

As for the best place to grab this life-changing breakfast? Highly contested. We’d recommend checking out long-time favorites like Gerry’s , which serves their full Irish with plenty of toast and coffee.

#4: Spend an afternoon exploring phenomenal Phoenix Park

What do adorable deer and the president of Ireland have in common? No, this isn’t the start of a joke. Stop laughing, you’re being weird.

Anyway, the answer is this: both of them live in Dublin’s phenomenal, sprawling Phoenix Park! And we mean sprawling —just west of Dublin’s town center, Phoenix Park is twice the size of NYC’s Central Park. And just as Central Park is one of the best places to visit in New York, Phoenix Park is a must-visit in Dublin.

Take an afternoon to explore every nook and cranny of this massive green space. You’re more likely to spot Dublin’s famous deer than the president—while the deer wander freely throughout the park, the president stays mostly in Áras an Uachtaráin , the official presidential residence.

Heads Up : In addition to deer and politicians, Phoenix Park is also home to some fantastic historic landmarks, as well as the stellar Dublin Zoo .

#5: Enjoy a Couple of Guinness(es)

Enjoying some Guinness is one of the best things to do in Dublin Ireland

We know, we know—this is an obvious must-do in Ireland, but Dublin is the best place in the world to drink Guinness. It’s like having a hot dog in NYC—you just can’t not do it. Enjoy a pint or three at a neighborhood pub, or go right to the source and drink up at the St. James Gate Guinness Factory —it’s all delicious.

#6: Get creepy at Christ Church Cathedral

Though it might not sound like much at first, Christ Church Cathedral is, without a doubt, one of the best places to visit in Ireland. Why? It’s packed with bizarre curiosities. Here, you’ll find a mummified cat and rat who got trapped in an organ pipe; the (once-stolen, recently returned ) heart of St. Laurence O’Toole; and the tomb of Strongbow, one of the first Norman invaders of Ireland (PS: one of the best things to do in Kilkenny , about two hours away, is exploring Strongbow’s Castle).

Basically, the cathedral is full of awesome, weird stuff. Descend into the crypt, explore the main church, and climb the belfry for a great view of Dublin. You can’t really go wrong.

Love the weird treasures you can find in old Irish churches? Then check out the mummies of St. Michan’s Church , also in Dublin. They’re so creepy, they inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula .

#7: Discover the up-and-coming Drumcondra neighborhood

On the north side of the River Liffey, and about twenty minutes from Temple Bar, you’ll find the Drumcondra neighborhood. Recently called “quietly confident” and “on the up” by the Irish Times (PS: for you non-Irish folk, that’s basically as complementary as they get), Drumcondra is home to great Dublin attractions like the National Botanical Gardens and Croke Park Stadium —along with a newly-arrived hipster vibe and some awesome bars and restaurants.

Drumcondra is also home to the immense Glasnevin Cemetery, one of the best places in town to trace your Irish roots.

#8: Tap your feet to a trad session

Listening to a trad session is one of the best things to do in Dublin Ireland

Irish pubs aren’t just about ales—they’re also about music and dancing! For the uninitiated, an Irish folk music jam session is known as a trad session —and Dublin is full of them. The Cobblestone , O’Donoghue’s , and the Hairy Lemon (don’t you love Irish pub names?) are all fantastic, but a music-loving local will definitely know best.

Interested in Irish folk music? Head to Galway . Just a couple hours away from Dublin, Galway is one of the best cities to visit in Ireland for its music scene alone (though there are things to do in Galway that aren’t music-related as well).

#9: Explore Dublin’s incredible museums

As you might imagine, Dublin has some incredible museums. Its two most famous are the gorgeous National Gallery of Ireland (full of work by Irish artists) and the National Museum of Ireland (full of Irish history and culture). Great news for budget travelers: both museums are free to visit!

If you’re looking for a more Dublin-centric museum, though, stop by the Little Museum of Dublin . Practically overflowing with Dublin artifacts—including an entire room dedicated to U2—the museum is like a love letter to Dublin. It’s an excellent stop on any Ireland itinerary.

#10: Drink all the Irish whiskey

Drinking Irish whiskey is one of the most fun things to do in Dublin Ireland

If Guinness is Ireland’s national beer, whiskey is the country’s national spirit. And in Dublin, your whiskey options are limitless . Start out at the Irish Whiskey Museum . Not only is it a great place to learn about whiskey, it's tour includes a tasting.

Once you’ve learned enough to really enjoy the experience, check out some of Dublin’s iconic distilleries. The Jameson Distillery , open since 1780, is a classic. The Teeling Distillery , only open since 2015, is the new kid on the block. Since it’s impossible to compare the two without visiting each, you basically have no other choice but to go to both…

#11: Enjoy the shopping (and buskers) on Grafton Street

Exploring Grafton Street is one of the best things to do in Dublin Ireland

If you loved the film Once (those songs! that romance!) then you’ll know Grafton Street . But for anyone who doesn't dig romantic dramas, Grafton Street is the place in Dublin for musicians to try out new material. Why? Running through the heart of Dublin—from St. Stephen’s Green to Trinity College—Grafton Street is home to some of the hippest boutiques and coolest pubs in the city. Plus, most of the street is designated for pedestrians only, which makes wandering along the cobblestones pretty freaking idyllic.

#12: Step behind bars at the Kilmainham Gaol

It may sound odd, but one of the coolest things to do in Ireland is to explore old Irish jails. Yeah, we know. But, seriously—people rave about touring the Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin. Constructed in 1796, the Gaol housed Irish political revolutionaries, prisoners destined for Australia, and desperate women and children who stole food during the Irish Famine .

#13: Sup under the steeple of The Church Restaurant

Eating at the Church restaurant is one of the best things to do in Dublin Ireland

An 18th-century church-turned-restaurant, The Church: Cafe, Bar, and Restaurant is more than just a funky little oddity. Seriously—it’s a character in Dublin history itself! It hosted the wedding of Arthur Guinness in 1761 and welcomed Irish author Jonathan Swift to church services, among others, before shutting its doors in 1964. Pretty cool, no?

A few decades later, The Church magnificently reopened as a four-story restaurant, offering cocktails, live music, and Irish cuisine. Dine alongside the tremendously cool original organ, or, if the weather permits, grab one of their tables outside.

#14: Wander the Hogwarts-like shelves of Trinity College Library

Wandering through Trinity College Library is one of the coolest things to do in Dublin Ireland

If you’re still convinced that your Hogwarts letter got lost in the mail (where are you, Hagrid?!) find some solace in the Hogwartsian stacks at Trinity College Library . It’s absolutely divine. We could spend all day climbing the spiral staircases, admiring the arched ceiling, and just enjoying that  book smell.

Be sure to check out the Library’s prized possession: The Book of Kells, a 9th-century manuscript that documents the life of Jesus Christ.

#15: Take in 800 years of history at Dublin Castle

Ireland is home to a whopping 30,000 castles (seriously) and the Dublin Castle is one of the best. It’s in remarkably good shape for being 800 years old—fun fact, Dublin’s name comes from the castle’s black ponds ( dubh linn in Gaelic). Today, it’s free to wander the castle’s gorgeous grounds.

#16: Take a sunset selfie at Ha'penny Bridge

Crossing Ha’penny Bridge is one of the best things to do in Dublin Ireland

If you went to Dublin and didn’t take a picture of the city’s Ha’penny Bridge, did you really go to Dublin? In all seriousness, crossing (and photographing) this picturesque bridge is an absolute must while you’re in town.

Officially called Liffey Bridge , Ha’penny’s nickname comes from a deal struck between ferry operator William Walsh and the city—Walsh would allow the bridge’s construction, as long as he earned a half-penny from tolls. Today, it’s one of Dublin’s top landmarks. And a pretty wonderful place to take a sunset stroll.

BREAKING NEWS

Two men charged after recent Campbell County home invasion attempts

Entertainment, error messages and lengthy online queues frustrate fans scrambling to secure oasis reunion tickets.

LONDON – Some Oasis fans celebrated like a champagne supernova, while others looked back in anger on Saturday as online ticket sites strained under demand for the band’s first shows for 15 years .

The Britpop-era behemoth led by brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher is scheduled to play 17 gigs in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin starting July 4.

More than 1 million tickets went on sale Saturday morning, with prices starting at about 74 pounds (just under $100) and rising to a 506-pound ($666) package that includes a pre-show party and merchandise.

The band's representatives said later in the day that all the tickets were sold, but hinted more shows may be announced, saying “anticipation for details of the tour’s international dates is now rapidly mounting.”

Many fans were frustrated in their attempts to secure tickets. Some people attempting to get onto the handful of authorized sales sites, including Ticketmaster and Gigs and Tours, received error messages, while many others were informed they were in a lengthy queue.

Josh Jeffery, a videographer who lives near Edinburgh, spent hours moving up the online ticket queue, before “the whole site collapsed” at the last step.

“I’ve given up, my friends have given up," said Jeffery, who first saw Oasis in Manchester as a teenager in 1996. “We just decided it’s too much hassle.

“As I was in the queue, I heard ‘Wonderwall’ blasting out from my neighbor’s house," he added ruefully. "He’d obviously got tickets.”

Some fans managed to buy tickets through a presale lottery on Friday. Barista Isabelle Doyle said she was “over the moon” after snagging two seats for one of the band's London shows.

“I’ve been a fan of Oasis for about 10 years now, literally since I was 11 years old," the 21-year-old said. "Finally to be able to see them after they got me through as a teenager, it’s absolutely amazing and I’m so excited.”

Within hours, tickets began to be offered on resale websites for as much as 6,000 pounds ($7,800). Oasis issued a warning, saying tickets could only be resold at face value through authorized sites.

“Tickets appearing on other secondary ticketing sites are either counterfeit or will be cancelled by the promoters,” it said in a statement.

Megan Gordon, a 25-year-old fan from Manchester, said she was “fuming” after failing to get tickets.

“I don’t really want to pay resale, but I will,” she said.

Formed in Manchester in 1991, Oasis was one of the dominant British acts of the 1990s, producing hits including “Wonderwall”, “Champagne Supernova” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” Its sound was fueled by singalong rock choruses and the combustible chemistry between guitarist-songwriter Noel Gallagher and singer sibling Liam.

Oasis split in 2009, with Noel Gallagher quitting the band after a backstage dustup with his brother at a festival near Paris. While the Gallagher brothers, now aged 57 and 51, haven’t performed together since, both regularly perform Oasis songs at their solo gigs. They’ve also each fired off criticisms of the other in the press.

Announcing the reunion, the band said fans would experience “the spark and intensity” that occurs only when they appear on stage together.

Alice Enders, head of research at media consultancy Enders Analysis, said touring was now the major source of revenue for many musicians, and Oasis could expect a big payday — though the tour, limited for now to the U.K. and Ireland, pales in comparison to global juggernauts like Taylor Swift's Eras tour .

She said Oasis is playing catch-up in a live music market that has seen “a relentless climb in expenditure, consumer expenditure, demand for festivals."

“It’s been 15 years of a mega-trend that they missed out on, basically,” Enders said. "So it’s a good thing they’re jumping on now. ... If they wait too long, then they are just a bunch of old geezers.”

The tour is due to begin July 4 and 5 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Oasis will also perform at Heaton Park in Manchester, on July 11, 12, 16, 19 and 20; London’s Wembley Stadium on July 25, 26 and 30 and Aug. 2 and 3; Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Aug. 8, 9 and 12; and Croke Park in Dublin on Aug. 16 and 17.

The host cities anticipate an economic boost to hotels, bars, restaurants and shops — especially Manchester, the band’s hometown and a city renowned for its musical heritage.

Sacha Lord, Manchester’s official nighttime economy adviser, said “there’s a big buzz” in the city about the reunion.

“This is a homecoming gig,” he said. “When they set foot on that stage for the first time, it’s going to be a really special moment.”

Fans acknowledged that, given the brothers' frequent feuds, there is a risk not all the dates will go to plan. But most were undeterred.

Louise Hudson got tickets for London's Wembley Arena, and plans a “family night out” with her brother, sister-in-law and niece.

As for the Gallaghers, “if they fall out, they fall out," she said. "Families, eh?”
