One Day In Ojai Itinerary: Best Things To Do In California’s Idyllic Mountain Town

Wondering what to in Ojai California? Here’s my detailed one day in Ojai itinerary, which covers all the best things to do and see in beautiful Ojai.

The town makes the perfect day trip from Los Angeles or Santa Barbara, but it’s so enchanting you may want to linger longer among the palm trees and vineyards.

Pinterest pin for one day in Ojai

Ojai is a 4.3 square mile city with around 8,000 residents in Ventura County. It’s a scenic recess in the Topatopa Mountains, connected to nature and serenely nestled in a valley full of orange groves and horse ranches.

Conde Nast Traveler calls Ojai a “nouveau hippie utopia” and that seems accurate. Ojai is the anti-LA, with a quaint walkable downtown and relaxed zen-like vibe.

It’s chock full of wellness centers, spas, one-of-a kind boutiques, and (naturally) wine tasting establishments. It’s also the home of the “pink moment,” a fleeting time when the setting sun casts a rosy glow over the valley and mountains.

the

Ojai was settled 5,000 years ago by the Chumash. “Ojai” means moon in the Chumash language.

Since its inception, Ojai has been a place for spirituality and alternative models of healing. In fact, some claim that the Ojai Valley is itself an energy-exuding vortex.

READ : Guide To The Vortexes Of Sedona

If this is too “woo, woo” for you, never fear. Ojai has plenty of other “healing” activities for non-spiritual types — shopping, massages, and wine tasting. You can also do none of those things and just relax and breathe in the zen.

For a small town, Ojai also offers quite a bit for traveling foodies. You’ll find plenty of wine tasting bars and eclectic farm to table eateries. So come with an appetite or work up one on Ojai’s scenic trails.

One Day In Ojai Itinerary

As with all of my suggested itineraries, you should use this one ay in Ojai itinerary as a guide. You can tailor it to suit your individual interests, needs, and pace of travel.

If you have extra time in Ojai, you can easily turn this 1 day in Ojai itinerary into a 2 day weekend itinerary by moving at a slower pace or indulging in more wineries or spas.

Morning Of One Day In Ojai Itinerary

If you arrive in Ojai in time for breakfast, head to Love Social for avocado toast or a breakfast burrito. Another healthy food option is Cafe Boku . It’s a superfood cafe offering up plant-based nourishment, smoothies, and coffee.

If you just need some caffeine, check out the java at Ojai Coffee Roasting Co .

Bart's Book

Bart’s Books

No one day in Ojai would be complete without a stop at Bart’s Books. Opened in 1964, the beloved shop is the word’s largest outdoor bookstore. It was modeled after the famous book stalls along the Seine River in Paris .

If you’re a bookworm, you could easily wile away a couple hours here. And the unique shop makes it easy.

Comfy chairs are scattered around and open air courtyards are filled to the brim with over 100,000 new and used books. It’s almost impossible to leave empty handed. I know I didn’t.

Ojai Valley Museum

Just down the street from Bart’s Books is the Ojai Valley Museum . It’s a small museum located inside a former church. It features ever-changing exhibits on local history, art, and culture.

The museum is only open Friday through Sunday. It also hosts walking tours of Ojai on Saturdays from 10:30 am (except during the hot months of July-September).

Arcade

Next, hit the Main Street and do some shopping in and around the Ojai Arcade. Depending on your interests, this could easily take up a few hours of your one day in Ojai.

For a small town, Ojai is a true shopping wonderland. From home decor to vintage books, you’ll find it all here. Moreover, you won’t find a single chain store, which is very refreshing.

In the Field has a great selection of boho-type clothing and vintage accessories. It’s definitely one of the nicest shops in Ojai. Fig Curated Living is a cozy shop with a nice selection of crafts, gifts, and all thing home and garden.

You can do a raw honey tasting at the Heavenly Honey Company . Its specialty is Ojai Sage Honey, which is made from the Sagebrush that grows in the Ojai Valley. No worries, it doesn’t taste earthy.

There’s even an adorable toy store, Serendipity Toys , which was simply stuffed to the brim with unique quality toys.

Heavenly Honey Tasting Room

And, naturally since you’re in Ojai, you can go crystal hunting at Crystal Corner . The shop says crystals “are a great tool for attracting abundance, providing protection, calming the mind, aligning the chakras, healing the spirit and so much more.”

I personally did the most damage at Julie Rose & Co. and Cercana.

Julie Rose sells cool clothing from the top California designers. Think Frank & Eileen, Xirena, and Bella Dahl. They also stock some unique jewelry that will be hard to resist.

Cercana is the ultimate home goods store. They sell ethically sourced goods from around the world — blankets, pillows, ceramics, baskets. They ship too, which is good because I somehow came away with a tree with fairy lights for my daughter.

If you want something truly unique, head into Danski . It’s a boutique that’s a treasure trove of beautiful, unique artsy clothing. The New York Times describes the shop as a “must visit.”

Cercana

For lunch, I recommend Farmer and the Cook . It’s a Mexican-themed vegetarian spot. It has a sunny patio, with a market to boot. You’ll have to drive there because it’s just outside the town center.

If you don’t want to get in the car, you can grab an acai bowl at Revel Kombucha Bar . Or try a Mexican-leaning sandwich or bowl at Hip Vegan , housed in a stylish minimalist setting.

You can also try Le Marche Gourmand . It’s a European gourmet deli where you can nibble on foie gras and duck.

Want to keep it simple? Try the pizza at Boccali’s Pizza and Pasta . The menu features their own fresh produce and the wood-fired crust is divine. You can dine alfresco on the outdoor patio. Don’t miss the signature strawberry shortcake.

Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts

Afternoon Of One Day In Ojai Itinerary

There are plenty more things to do in Ojai in the afternoon. You can check out a museum, go bike or hiking, or do a wine or craft beer tasting. You can’t fit them all into one day in Ojai, but I’m laying out all the options.

Beatrice Wood Center For The Arts

Are you an art lover? If so, after lunch, pop into the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts . It’s the former home and studio of the named artist, author and potter.

Known as the “Mama of Dada” and lover of Marcel Duchamp, Wood was a member of the New York Dada group and a pioneering sculptor. She worked primarily in luster-glazed ceramics. The museum offers a glimpse into the fascinating life of the cult artist and irreverent feminist.

You’ll have to plan you visit on a weekend though. The center is only open Friday to Sundays from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Mission Revival architecture on the main drag

Libbey Park

If you are little ones with you, you might make a stop in Libbey Park. It has a fountain, tennis court, and a solid playground.

Libbey Park is also home to the Libbey Bowl. It’s an amphitheater that hosts the annual Ojai Music Festival in June.

Feel like being pampered? It’s one of the best things to do in Ojai. The town is loaded with magical spas.

spa village at Ojai Valley Inn

You can get anything from a casual foot rub to a Cumash-inspired detoxifying treatment.

Spa Ojai at the Ojai Valley Inn is the cream of the crop. It has an extensive list of treatments, including salt massages, sound therapy, and energy alchemy. The spa also offers yoga and meditation classes.

Earth Tonics Spa is anther great pampering option, focusing on skin care. This is the place to get a botanical facial.

Smack in the historic center of Ojai, the Lavender Inn Spa has a long list of facial and massage options, set in a cozy cottage dating from 1874.

Meditation Mount

Need to decompress? Head to Meditation Mount . It’s a non-profit meditation center plunked into the semi-wilderness.

It’s a gorgeous, peaceful place. Meditation Mount is free to visit with a suggested donation of $10 for a 2 hour self guided meditation. You must pre-register online for your visit or to book a workshop.

You an also try to time your visit with the “pink moment.” Meditation Mount has an ideal vantage point for catching the show.

Hiking & Biking

Need some exercise during your one day in Ojai? You have some options.

Shelf Road is an easy 3.5 mile out and back trail. It will take about 1:25. You’ll see bikers, runners, and hikers on the trail.

Ojai Valley Bike Trail

It’s popular because it offers up sweeping views of the Ojai Valley. Park at the top of Signal Street to access the trail.

Bikers should head to the Ojai Valley Bike Trail. It’s a moderately hard point to point trail of 15 miles. The trail start art Ojai’s East End and winds around to Ventura’s pier.

Would you rather ride a horse? Ojai is in prime horse country. You may even see riders sauntering through the town. For information, check out the Ojai Valley Trail Riding Company on Meyer Road.

Ardent adventurers may also want to book a guided hiking tour , a guided biking tour , or a rock climbing experience .

Farmer’s Market

If your one day in Ojai falls on a Sunday, head to the Ojai Farmer’s Market to stock up on fresh produce. It’s held behind the Arcade at 300 E. Mathilda Street from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (rain or shine).

Majestic Vineyard Wine Tasting Room

Wine Tasting

The Ojai wineries have a laidback and welcoming vibe. So round out your one day in Ojai itinerary with a fantastic wine tasting.

The Ojai Vineyard  tasting room is housed in a redesigned Colonial Revival style building near the end of the downtown area. They’ve been producing delicate small batch wines since 1983.

The large tasting room is always full of oenophiles, sipping and swirling. 300 different wines that can be bought or enjoyed in the tasting room. A typical tasting flight includes 5 wines.

Casa Barranca is an organic winery located on the main street of Ojai. You can sit at the bar or nearby tables to enjoy the flight of 5 unique organic wines, including one of the regions best Pinot Noirs.

The Majestic Oak Vineyard is a small boutique family winery. The tasting room is located down a flight of stairs on Ojai Ave.

The Ojai Vineyard

There’s a lovely wine tasting patio where you can sip wine under grape vines. Tastings are first come-first serve, so you don’t need to make a reservation.

You can also sip wine at Tipple & Ramble , along with a cheese plate or charcuterie board in a tranquil garden setting.

If you would rather sip a craft beer, Ojai has you covered on that score too. Head to Ojai Valley Brewery .

It’s a tap room with tasty bar food that’s distinctly California. There’s a cafe style patio and bar area dedicated to beer geeks with a penchant for hoppy beers.

Ojai Olive Oil Company

If you don’t want to sip wine, try an olive oil tasting instead. Ojai Olive Oil Co . is an organic olive oil farm just minutes from downtown. It’s one of the most popular things to do in Ojai.

You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Tuscany. In the tasting room, you can sample olive oils for $10 per tasting, and learn about how olive oil is extracted, blended, and bottled. There are also free talks and tours on Wednesday and Saturday.

Evening Of One Day In Ojai Itinerary

Pink moment.

Don’t miss the opportunity to bask in the glow of the Pink Moment, one of the best things to do in Ojai.

A good place to see the play of pink and violet on the mountains is at sunset on the Scenic Overlook of Ojai on the 150. Be sure to check sunset times in advance and get there a bit early to catch the show.

Ojai may be small, but it has a well developed food culture and you will have plenty of dinner options. Just don’t plan on eating late because Ojai is very sleepy after 9:00 pm.

Ojai Rotie is a casual French-Lebanese patio restaurant. You’ll find a beautiful array of salads, dips, and flatbreads.

If you crave Italian food, head to Nocciola or Olivella . The 6 course tasting menu at Nocciola is superb! Olivella has a seasonal valley to table menu supported by the local Ojai valleys, ranches, orchards, farms, and ocean waters.

The Duchess is a fairly new restaurant serving up Burmese and Indian food., alongside market driven cocktails.

Los Padres National Forest and Lake Casitas

More Than One Day In Ojai?

If you have more than one day in Ojai, indulge in some water recreation at Lake Casitas. It boasts nearly 32 miles of shoreline and was the site of the 1984 Olympic canoeing and rowing events.

You pay $10 for a day pass. That allows you to hike, bike, fish, swim, boat and birdwatch. The blue lake is especially known for its world class bass fishing. Birders can expect to see bald eagles and blue herons.

Here are some must know tips for spending 1 day in Ojai.

1. How To Get To Ojai

To get to Ojai, take Highway 101 (north or south). Take Exit 33 north. Follow it for 15 miles past the Y intersection to get to the downtown.

Ojai is 88 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara. The nearest airport is LAX.

3. When To Visit Ojai

With an average year round temperature in the 70s, there isn’t really a bad time to visit Ojai.

fields in Ojai

But I think the best times to visit Ojai are April-May or September-October.

I last visited in mid-September. Even then, there was a heat wave and it was unexpectedly toasty. So, you may want to avoid the summer months if you’re heat tolerant.

That said, in June, Ojai hosts the Ojai Music Festival and the Ojai Wine Festival . So you may want to pencil those in on your calendar.

The Ojai Wine Festival is the longest running wine festival in Ventura County, at 34 years and counting. It’s held at Lake Casitas, an idyllic venue to taste award winning wines and craft beers.

Ojai is pretty in the winter too. But the temperature can range 40 degrees over the course of a day, so pack according if you visit then.

4. Where To Stay in Ojai

If your budget can afford it, splurge on the well-loved Ojai Valley Inn . It’s a five star hotel with Spanish Colonial Revival style architecture just 1.5 miles from town. Some of the luxury rooms have balconies and fireplaces.

The resort’s pool has scenic mountain views. The onsite restaurant, Olivella , is a push Italian eatery. The award-winning spa could keep you busy for a large chunk of your one day in Ojai.

If you can’t stay overnight, you could see the place by having a cocktail at the Wallace Neff Heritage Bar. There’s a lovely patio with views of the valley to boot.

Some other good contenders for hotels are Casa Ojai Inn , the Emerald Iguana Inn , or the Ojai Retreat & Inn .

You should also check out the Su Nidio Inn . It’s a sleek luxury cottage style inn, with 10 cottages named after local birds.

5. Places To Visit Near Ojai

Ventura is about 25 minutes south of Ojai. It’s a fun surf town with good eateries. You can surf, swim, kayak, or sunbathe on pristine beaches that are often empty.

Ventura’s Main Street is filled chockablock with Mexicali taco shops, casual cafes, eclectic cookeries, and gift shops.

Montecito is a tony enclave between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean on the “American Riviera.” It’s just a short nudge east from Santa Barbara and 45 minutes from Ojai.

Montecito is a retro-chic town with great food and shopping. It’s sun soaked main drag is full of cute boutiques and eateries that can keep you busy for hours. And you can soak in the rays at beautiful Butterfly Beach.

Of course, Santa Barbara is just 50 minutes away. It’s a natural movie set, with a spectacular coastline, beautiful beaches, Mission architecture, and hot foodie scene.

Santa Barbara could be a commercial for the good life. Everything is pristine and dripping with bougainvilla. You can continue your wine theme with this popular t our of Santa Barbara wine country .

Beautiful write up! I grew up there in the 1950s and 60s. Now live in Florida but own what’s left of the KB Hall Ranch in the Upper Ojai Valley with my brothers. For me, Ojai is all the things you mention and it’s timeless, unchallenged from my childhood !

Thank you Matthew! I really enjoyed the beautiful town.

How to Plan a Perfect Day Trip to Ojai from Los Angeles

If you’re in the Southern California area, an activity you have to add to your bucket list is a day trip to Ojai. Ojai (which is a Chumash Native American word for “the nest”) is a charming, easygoing town that offers the perfect getaway for anyone wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the larger SoCal cities.

While the vibe in Ojai is laid-back, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a wealth of things to do. From enjoying the natural beauty of the area on a hike, to shopping at one-of-a-kind boutiques and antique stores in town, to sipping on wine while basking in the sun at a local winery, you won’t have a hard time filling up your itinerary.

Want to plan the perfect Ojai day trip? Here is everything you need to know!

day trip to ojai ca

Getting to Ojai from Los Angeles

If you’re coming from Los Angeles, you have a few transportation options. Keep in mind that Ojai is a very walkable town, so you’ll still be able to get around if you don’t drive your own car. That said, there are a few activities on the itinerary below that will require you to get a taxi or rideshare if you don’t drive yourself.

By Train & Bus

Depending on where in LA you’re coming from, you can catch an Amtrak Train from Union Station (DTLA), Glendale Station, Bob Hope Airport Train Station (Burbank), Van Nuys, Chatsworth, or Simi Valley. There isn’t a train stop in Ojai, so you’ll have to take the train to Ventura, and then take the bus from there.

Once at the Ventura train station, you’ll need to head over to the Thompson & Figueroa bus stop (a three-minute walk) and take the number 16 bus (you’ll find the most up-to-date bus schedules here ), which will take you directly to downtown Ojai. The bus ride will take approximately 40 minutes, and the train (from Union Station) will take about an hour and 45 minutes.

Travelling to Ojai by car will take you about an hour and a half to two hours, depending on where you’re coming from. From central Los Angeles, you’ll make your way to the 101 North (take the 405 North to the 101 North if you’re further west). You’ll take the 101 all the way up to Ventura (about 80 miles from central LA), and then take exit 70B for the 33 North towards Ojai.

After 8 miles, you’ll turn right onto Creek Road, continuing for 5.5 miles until it turns into S Ventura Street. Continue up that road for half a mile, and you’ll hit E Ojai Street, right in the middle of town.

When to Visit Ojai

There really is no bad time to visit Ojai! Summer is the peak season, so expect larger crowds from June through early September. Ojai tends to have warmer summers, with the average high temperature hitting the mid-80s in August – although it can sometimes hit the 90s and low 100s.

For less crowds, plan to visit in the fall, winter, or spring. The hotter summer weather does often run into the fall, but the average temperatures are around the mid-70s. In the winter and spring, you can expect weather averaging in the low to mid-60s.

The Perfect Day Trip to Ojai

Here is a step-by-step guide to making the most out of your one day in Ojai!

Get Caffeinated

First things first: get some caffeine in your system before exploring! Beacon Coffee is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. The cafe offers high-quality coffee from around the world, and the menu has everything from cappuccinos to mochas to matcha lattes. It’s also a great spot for a quick bite, with plenty of delicious pastries to choose from (including some vegan and gluten-free options).

day trip to ojai ca

Another popular Ojai coffee shop is Love Social Cafe , which is a great option if you also need some breakfast to go with your coffee. In addition to coffee and tea, Love Social Cafe has a great breakfast menu that includes a breakfast burrito, breakfast sandwich, oatmeal, a scramble, and more.

Take a Hike (or a Walk)

day trip to ojai ca

Once you’ve got caffeine in your system, consider going on a hike or nature walk. Ojai offers gorgeous natural scenery, so this is the best way to really take in the views. Here are a few trails that are perfect if you’re spending just one day in Ojai, starting from easiest to hardest.

Ojai Meadows Preserve

This is a super easy walk on a mile-long out and back trail (although there are plenty of off-shoots to go down if you want to do a little more exploring). At this peaceful preserve, you’ll see lots of birds, bunnies, squirrels, and other wildlife, and take in the natural landscape and surrounding mountains.

Rose Valley Falls

This easy hike in Los Padres National Forest follows an out and back trail that is just over a mile long to a waterfall. Keep in mind that it’s about a 19.5-mile drive to the trailhead, but the beautiful views you get along the road makes the drive an activity in itself!

Shelf Road Trail

If you’re looking for an easy hike in town, this 3.5-mile out and back trail is a great option. It’s perfect if you want to take in views of the valley from above!

Pratt, Foothill, and Fox Canyon Trails Loop

This moderate 3.1-mile loop is just a mile outside of the center of town, and great for those wanting to get in more of a workout. You’ll experience beautiful views of Ojai as you hike your way through the foothills.

Matilija Creek Trail

If you want to dedicate most of your day in Ojai to hiking, this one’s for you! This moderate 8.8-mile out and back trail (which is about a 10-mile drive from town) features a waterfall, and takes you through the gorgeous mountains.

day trip to ojai ca

Explore Downtown Ojai

Now that you got a bit of a workout in, it’s time to head to downtown Ojai! The town features beautiful Spanish architecture, and plenty of eclectic boutiques, antique stores, and restaurants to check out (no chain stores here!).

You probably worked up an appetite on your hike, so be sure to start by getting some lunch – you’ll find recommendations below! If you end up getting takeout, you can bring it to Libbey Park, a spacious park with plenty of tables (as well as lots of trees to keep you cool on a hot day!).

day trip to ojai ca

After lunch, take a leisurely stroll through town and check out the local businesses. If you’re an art aficionado, there are a variety of galleries to check out. Porch Gallery is located in the historic Montgomery House, and features the work of contemporary artists. Another great option is OVA Arts , a gallery owned by seven local artists that displays contemporary arts and crafts work done by artists in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

If you’re in a shopping mood, be sure to stop by some of the local boutiques and antique stores. Treasures of Ojai is an antique store offering vintage furniture, jewelry, clothing, décor, and more. For gifts and home goods, stop by Fig , which sells handmade, local, and fair trade goods, including candles, planters, ceramics, glassware, natural bath and body products, and so much more.

Summer Camp is another popular store featuring home and lifestyle goods, including vintage collectibles and pieces from local artists.

A trip to Ojai isn’t complete without a stop at Bart’s Books , the world’s largest outdoor bookstore. It’s located on the outskirts of the downtown area (but still walkable if you park in the center of town), so remember to make a mental note to stop by.

day trip to ojai ca

Keep in mind that this is just a sampling of the many galleries and stores in Ojai. There are over 50 stores and galleries, so be sure to walk around and check out any businesses that speak to you during your one day in Ojai!

Stop by the Ojai Farmers Market

If you’ve planned your trip to Ojai on a Sunday, you’re in luck. The Ojai Farmers Market happens every Sunday in the downtown area, and has been serving the community for over 18 years.

The market is fairly small, but filled with tons of local vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables, olive oil, jam, honey, bread, desserts, eggs, flowers, plants, soup, handmade bath and body products, and so much more. It’s the perfect stop if you want to bring a little piece of Ojai home.

Enjoy Some Local Wine or Beer

After exploring the town of Ojai and finding some goodies at the farmers market, it’s time to kick back and enjoy a drink! If you’re in the mood for wine, there are some great options to check out.

Topa Mountain Winery is a wonderful spot with a gorgeous patio and even better wine. Their wine is made with grapes sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards in the Ojai Valley region and Santa Barbara .

day trip to ojai ca

At Topa Mountain Winery, they offer a wide variety of wines, including Syrah, Pinot Noir, Barbera, Chardonnay, Rosé, and Viognier. You can enjoy wine by the glass or bottle, or opt for a tasting flight. I highly recommend the tasting, as it’s a great way to get a glimpse of their best wines (their Syrah is my favorite!). If you’re feeling hungry, they also have a snack menu.

Heads up: you’ll need to make a reservation ahead of time. Be sure to get on their mailing list, as they send out emails on Monday about open reservations for the week and weekend ahead.

Another great option on the opposite side of town is family owned and operated Boccali Vineyards and Winery . Boccali produces their wines solely using grapes from their vineyards, and currently offers Syrahs, a Zinfandel, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Grenache Blanc, and more. On the weekend, tastings are offered outdoors on the lawn, which is shaded by oak trees.

Side note: the Boccali family also owns a pizza and pasta restaurant, which is in the same location as the winery. Be sure to pick up some food to enjoy with your wine!

In the mood for beer instead? Stop by the Ojai Taproom of Topa Topa Brewing Co. , a craft brewery founded in Ventura. They offer everything from IPAs to stouts to sours, so there’s an option for everyone. If you have someone in your group who isn’t a beer fan, they also have hard seltzers on tap.

Where to Eat & Drink in Ojai

Close your day out with a nice glass of wine or beer and a farm-to-table meal before making your way back home.

Eating in Ojai

There is no shortage of great restaurants in Ojai. Here are a few of the best eateries to stop by during your visit:

  • Bonnie Lu’s : This charming diner is a great spot for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. It offers everything you could want from a diner, including pancakes, waffles, omelettes, benedicts, burgers, and sandwiches.
  • The Nest : The Nest is an Ojai native-owned restaurant open for lunch and dinner, with a menu that features innovative takes on classic comfort food. You’ll find items like crispy brussels sprouts, bao buns, calamari tacos, a variety of pizzas and sandwiches, and rotating specials.
  • Hip Vegan : Whether you’re vegan or not, Hip Vegan is a great casual spot to stop by for lunch or early dinner. They offer burgers and sandwiches, bowls, soups, salads, and shareable sides (I highly recommend the gunpowder fries!) .
  • Nocciola : If you’re looking for a slightly more upscale dining experience for dinner, Italian restaurant Nocciola is a great spot. The menu features classic Italian food, including traditional homemade pasta dishes.
  • Ojai Rotie : This casual eatery describes its cuisine as a Lebanese French picnic, with delicious salads, soups, sandwiches, snacks, and more. They also make their own bread in-house, and sell whole loaves to take home.

Drinking in Ojai

In addition to the wine and beer spots mentioned above, there are some great bars to check out at the end of your day in Ojai. Here are a few favorites:

  • Chief’s Peak : Chief’s Peak is a cozy, trendy bar with hipster vibes located at Ojai Rancho Inn. Enjoy beer, wine, or a soju cocktail while sitting in front of the fireplace and listening to classic vinyl spinning on the record player.
  • Tipple & Ramble : While an outdoor bar and home dĂ©cor shop isn’t your typical business combination, Tipple & Ramble does this hybrid extremely well. On a warm day, enjoy some beer, wine, or hard kombucha on the festive (and naturally well-decorated) outdoor patio.
  • The Vine : This laid-back wine bar and restaurant is right in the middle of Ojai. It serves not only a variety of reds, whites, and sparkling wine, but also beer and craft cocktails.

Getaway to Ojai in California

How to Spend a Day or a Weekend at Ojai

day trip to ojai ca

Ojai Visitors Bureau

Ojai village settles down into its valley like eggs into a bird's nest, giving credence to some people's contention that its name means "nest" in the Chumash Indian language.

Ojai (pronounced like a startled greeting: OH-hi) is situated in a small, east-west valley about 15 miles from Ventura and the Pacific coast, surrounded by citrus groves, oak trees, and the protective Santa Ynez Mountains.

You can plan your Ojai day trip or weekend getaway using the resources below.

Why Should You Go? Will You Like Ojai?

Ojai is a good place for a relaxing getaway or a romantic interlude, with just enough to do at a leisurely pace.

If you're a photographer, the oak trees, mountains, and orange groves provide plenty of things to point your lens at. And the annual "pink moment" could be worth planning a trip around.

If you don't like to shop, spa , or hike , Ojai may not be for you. Ojai is also a little short on kid-oriented activities to make it a good place for a family getaway.

Best Time to Go to Ojai

Ojai weather is nice anytime, but hotter in summer. If you go in spring or fall, it will be less crowded, and hotels may offer off-season rates. It is also less busy midweek any time of year.

Don't Miss

If you've only got a day, take a leisurely stroll along the arcade and the streets branching off from Ojai Avenue (which is also Hwy 150). You'll find art galleries, boutique clothing stores, several places to eat and the tasting rooms for Majestic Oak Winery and Casa Barranca Winery, the first certified organic winery on the Central Coast.

Just a block off Ojai Avenue, on the corner of Matilija and Canada, is Bart's Books . Famous for being a (mostly) outdoor bookstore, it's known for its scandalously low-priced specials displayed on shelves along the sidewalk. Those super deals have been sold on the honor system since 1964 when the original Bart first put out a coffee can to collect his earnings when he wasn't around. Bart's Books is open seven days a week.

More Great Things to Do in Ojai

A weekend in Ojai is about escaping and relaxing rather than a big list of things to do. You can't beat the Kuyam experience at  Spa Ojai  for helping with the relaxing part. It uses the therapeutic effects of cleansing mud, dry heat, inhalation therapy, and guided meditation. Try the  Day Spa of Ojai  which offers massage, facials, and body treatments.

Visitors give high marks to Ojai Olive Oil at 1811 Ladera Road for their tours and products.

For a little more active day, you can go horseback riding with Western Trail Rides . If you have kids Ojai Trail Riding company offers special programs just for youngsters.

Rent a bicycle from Bicycles of Ojai (108 Canada Street) and pedal the 16-mile paved path that runs from Ojai's Libbey Park all the way to the beach in Ventura .

Annual Events You Should Know About

  • April:  Ojai Pixie Month —a month-long celebration dedicated to the Pixie Tangerine, a tasty citrus orb that is unique to the Ojai Valley. During the month, Ojai businesses, restaurants, and hotels throughout Ojai offer special packages.
  • April:  Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament
  • June:   Ojai Wine Festival at nearby Lake Casitas
  • June:  Ojai Music Festival
  • June:  Ojai Valley Lavender Festival
  • July: Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks Celebration
  • October: Ojai Studio Artists Tour
  • October: Ojai Day
  • November:  Ojai Film Festival

Tips for Visiting Ojai

  • Whether you're visiting for the day or the weekend, you'll quickly discover that parking along Ojai Ave is limited to 2 hours. Follow S. Montgomery or look behind the arcade shops off E. Matilija for lots with longer limits. They also have a trolley that operates during busy times. Check their maps for stops and prices .
  • If you need to "go" while you're downtown, head for the green-tiled arch under the arcade. Follow the signs pointing toward more shops. There are public restrooms back there.

Where to Stay

We haven't had the time to stay in every hotel, motel, B&B and other lodgings in town, but we would go back to the lovely Su Nido Inn  anytime and we still remember how nice it was to find the hot tub ready for us to jump into a chilly evening.

For a unique lodging experience, try Caravan Outpost , a collection of vintage Airstream travel trailers circled around a central area where you can get to know your fellow travelers.

For other ideas, go to Tripadvisor for reviews and price comparisons on hotels in Ojai .

If you're looking for a place to camp, you'll find 400 sites along the shores at Lake Casitas , just a few miles out of town.

Getting To Ojai

Ojai is 83 miles from Los Angeles, 207 miles from San Diego and 120 miles from Bakersfield. From the north or south, take US 101 to CA Hwy 33 east. The junction is just north of Ventura. If you're driving southward on US 101 at night, resist the urge to turn off at Hwy 150 (which is the first exit you'll encounter toward Ojai). While Hwy 150 is scenic in the day, it's two-laned and winding, no fun in the dark.

From the east or central valley, take I-5 to CA Hwy 33 west.

Getting Home from Ojai

You'll likely be done with Ojai after spending a full day there. After breakfast on your second day, think about taking a leisurely drive home.

If your home is north of town, CA Hwy 150 toward Santa Barbara includes a scenic drive around Lake Casitas, through pastoral countryside and past avocado groves. From there, you could continue north on Hwy 192, skirting the eastern edge of Santa Barbara, then follow Hwy 154 north through the Santa Ynez Valley, connecting with US 101.

If you are going south from Ojai, take CA Hwy 150 int the other direction, and you'll climb to some scenic vista points overlooking the valley on the way to Santa Paula. From there you can take CA Hwy 126 toward Ventura or follow CA Hwy 126 the other way to I-5.

CA Hwy 33 leads through the Los Padres National Forest and toward the Central Valley.

The Perfect Ojai Day Trip Itinerary

If you’re looking for a Southern California day trip spot, Ojai is the perfect place. This town is small enough to not feel overwhelmed when planning your itinerary, but there are definitely enough things to do in Ojai to fill up the day! Below, I’ve created a stop-by-stop guide on what to do (and where to eat) when spending one day in Ojai, CA.

Things to Do in Ojai, CA (in One Day!)

Ojai Meadows Preserve View

First Stop: Ojai Olive Oil

The first stop during our Ojai day trip was Ojai Olive Oil . The farm is open to the public daily, and you can do an olive oil tasting on site for just $10. As you taste, you’ll learn about the process of making the olive oil and the history of the farm.

Of course, they also have a store on-site where you can buy their olive oils and balsamic vinegars – and you’ll definitely want to leave with a few bottles in hand after the tasting! We ended up buying the Tuscan olive oil, basil olive oil, and fig balsamic vinegar.

The store and tasting area are located right on the olive farm, so you can walk around and check out the trees during your visit.

Ojai Olive Oil Trees

Second Stop: Bart’s Books

One of the best spots in Ojai that you definitely won’t want to miss is Bart’s Books – the world’s largest outdoor bookstore. Even if you’re not on the market for some new books, it’s a super cool and unique space to walk around. The novelty of having a bookstore outside makes it worth the stop! Bart’s Books is just a few blocks away from Downtown Ojai, so you can park your car by the bookstore and just walk over to our third stop…

Bookshelf at Bart's Books

Third Stop: Downtown Ojai and Ojai Farmers Market

Of course, an Ojai day trip isn’t complete without a stroll through the center of town. There are plenty of fun boutiques, antique shops, thrift stores, and more to walk through.

If you’re there on a Sunday, you can also check out the Ojai Farmers Market. Didn’t get a chance to stop by Ojai Olive Oil? Don’t worry – they’ve got a stand at the farmers market!

Libbey Park is also a super pretty park to check out, and great if you have kids. There’s a very cool playground that seven year old me would have been stoked to play on.

Ojai Tower

Fourth Stop: Lunch at Hip Vegan

Whether you’re vegan or not, Hip Vegan is a great Ojai restaurant to stop by to pick up lunch! The highlight of our meal was the gunpowder fries. They don’t share their secret sauce, but they have some sort of spicy, curry-ish seasoning on it. I don’t know what it is…but it’s delicious, and definitely worth a try.

Fifth Stop: Topa Mountain Winery

If you’re a wine fan, a stop at Topa Mountain Winery is one of the best things to do in Ojai! The wine was delicious, the outdoor patio is beautiful and sprawling.

Topa Mountain does require reservations (which is great for ensuring it doesn’t get too crowded), and you can get on their mailing list to be notified when reservations open up. They send out an email on Monday for reservations that Wednesday through Monday (at the time of writing this – check their website for the most up-to-date info).

If you’re unable to make a reservation, another option is Boccali Vineyards, which is a bit over two miles east of town. I haven’t been there personally, but it is highly rated. They do tastings on a lawn, with tables spread far away from each other.

Topa Mountain Winery

Sixth Stop: Ojai Meadows Preserve

I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect with Ojai Meadows Preserve, as there wasn’t much info online. Thankfully, I was very pleasantly surprised.

The area is absolutely gorgeous, peaceful, and filled with wildlife. Lots of bunnies and ducks, and we heard so many birds and crickets chirping! I liked visiting at the end of our Ojai day trip, because we were there during golden hour.

This is definitely more of a walk than a hike, so you don’t need to break out the hiking boots. That said, it is a dirt path, and there is an uphill section that you can explore if you’d like, so be prepared with the right shoes. I was wearing my converse, and was totally fine.

Ojai Meadows Preserve View

I hope you have a wonderful time exploring the beautiful town of Ojai! If you have a longer trip planned for Santa Barbara County or the larger Southern California region, be sure to check out some of my other articles:

How to Spend a Perfect Day in Ojai, CA

Ojai, CA is an idyllic town of approximately 7,500 people and is less than an hour from the arguably more famed wine and resort destination of Santa Barbara. While it doesn’t quite garner the same attention as its neighbor to the west, Ojai is just as relaxed and charming. The town is worthy of a weekend visit and at minimum a full day in Ojai.

Based on several trips to Ojai and as a Southern California native, here is my guide to one perfect day in Ojai and my favorite things to do in Ojai.

topa winery in ojai, ca

It’s easy to spend a perfect day here because of the architectural beauty, easy walkability, and friendliness of the establishments that make up the town. It’s perfect for a couple’s weekend getaway, a girls’ trip, or a solo adventure. There’s much to be uncovered in this picturesque place.

Afternoon Wine Tasting in Ojai

ojai vineyard tasting room

Napa, Paso Robles , and Santa Barbara all get their fair share of wine exposure, but Ojai isn’t a place to be overlooked when it comes to tasting rooms. Majestic Oak Vineyard and Winery is tucked below the main street of downtown Ojai in a not-so-secret garden that’s a relaxing place to enjoy a glass of red (which they’re known for) and chat among friends.

The Ojai Vineyard

The Ojai Vineyard is located within walking distance from Majestic Oak and has a beautiful and slightly larger tasting room. The building was once an old bank and the restoration of it is picture-perfect for a place to try out some regional sips.

End your wine tasting at Topa Mountain Winery , which has indoor seating and room at the bar for wine tasting, but the real fun is outside on their sprawling grounds with plenty of tables, chairs, and misters. They typically have a food truck that pulls up for people to purchase food, but the place also allows guests to bring in their own eats.

It’s not uncommon for wine drinkers to order a pizza for delivery or bring extravagant homemade picnic spreads. One of the best options is to first stop by Marche Gourmet Delicatessen and allow them to create a cheese plate or charcuterie board to go as well as a couple of their specialty salads.

Where to Eat in Ojai

There’s an Ojai ordinance that prohibits chain restaurants with the exception of Jersey Mike’s which snuck in as the exception since it was already in existence prior to the new rule. That means visitors can support local businesses that get most of their produce and meat from local markets and farmers.

Taking the Ojai Food Tour is an excellent way to maximize your afternoon, while also sampling some of the top dishes and learn more about the town.

Ojai Beverage Company

The Ojai Beverage Co. is ideal for lunch or dinner. The portions are significant, the dishes are delicious, but it’s the friendly, laid-back service that makes this a must-try on your visit. Not sure what to get? The Ribeye Melt is a mountain of meat so tender that it melts into the Muenster cheese and caramelized onions that top it. On your way out, grab a bottle of wine or beer by the can from the fully stocked store at the front of the restaurant.

Stop at the Ojai Valley Museum

day trip to ojai ca

Ojai Valley Museum is a good starting point when spending the day in Ojai because it’s near the start of the town’s main street. You can miss the beautiful architecture of the building that was once the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Here, visitors can learn about the history of Ojai, view local artwork, and become further immersed in the culture of the area.

It’s a museum, research library, and visitors’ center all in one, which means it has something for everyone. As a non-profit, they do take suggested entrance fee donations of $5 for adults and $1 for children.

The Best Time to Visit Ojai, CA

It can heat up in Ojai, but mornings usually start cool. April is considered Pixie Month, the time when Pixie tangerines are in season. There’s an annual festival that celebrates the fruit and the restaurants feature specialty items on their menus. Everywhere you go, there will be a faint scent of citrus that lingers thanks to these ripe wonders.

The weather during this time of year hovers around the high 60s, but for a weekend getaway or a day trip (depending on how close you live), any time of the year is bound to be a fun time.

A Few Fun Facts about Ojai, CA

bart's books in ojai, ca

  • The beloved Bart’s Books is the largest independently owned and operated outdoor bookstore in the U.S. Take your time to wander through the stacks because they go further back than what is visible from the street.
  • Depending on who you talk to, Ojai is also known for its calming effect thanks to its spiritual vortex. Even if you’re not a believer, you can sense the serenity of the town and appreciate the alternative medicine offerings.
  • More than a few celebrities call or have called Ojai home. Among the city’s list of famous residents are Reese Witherspoon, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Selleck, and Britney Spears.

Ojai, CA Budget Hotels

Ojai is a place where visitors tend to splurge to stay at one of their well-known resorts. VRBO is a more affordable route, but depending on the season, there are still reasonable accommodations.

Hummingbird Inn offers a stay for around $100 per night and includes free WiFi, free parking, and complimentary breakfast. It’s one mile from Los Padres National Forest and a few blocks from downtown. Guests enjoy the comfortable coziness of the low-key space.

The Capri is another budget-friendly option that has a bohemian flair also located near downtown Ojai. Guests receive free breakfast, WiFi, and parking at this modest motel.

The Weekend Travel Guide to Ojai, California

The Best Ojai Hotels

Updated September 2023

Welcome to Ojai, California. An enclave for artists, those looking to escape city life, and truly one of the most relaxed California destinations.

My first time visiting Ojai I was completely smitten with the town. I tried to find a comparison, but truly nowhere else in California compares. It’s intimate, connected with nature, and a place to rest. I found myself slowing down and soaking in smaller moments.

Travel Guide to Ojai, California

What caught my attention during my time visiting Ojai was the focus on “local” by so many of the businesses. You found it at restaurants through the ingredients they used and at stores that carried local artisans. And when a town has a focus on supporting local, you sense it, you sense their passion for highlighting just what makes their home so great.

So while I came with the intention to relax and reconnect, which I surely did, I left with a much greater appreciation. An appreciation for what local can mean and just how truly wonderful it is to be connected with a community.

Travel Guide to Ojai, California

I hope you’ll find Ojai a place to be inspired and to disconnect. Soak it all in at those sun-filled patios at restaurants and try the local produce. Enjoy wonderful accommodations that will spark a love for design in your own home. A weekend trip to Ojai, California does wonders for the soul.

Short on Time? Here Are My Top Picks for the Best Hotels in Ojai:

  • Ojai Valley Inn , for the best luxury hotel
  • Ojai Rancho Inn , for the best overall hotel
  • The Capri Hotel , for the best design-for-dollar hotel

For more on where to stay, read my in-depth guide to the best hotels in Ojai .

What to Know Before Visiting Ojai

Travel Guide to Ojai, California

Best Time of Year to Visit Ojai

Ojai can truly be a year-round destination given its location and generally sunny weather. If you’re looking to spend time poolside, I would aim for later in spring through late summer to have warmer days.

Amount of Time in Ojai

Two nights is the perfect amount of time to visit Ojai. It will give you a chance to enjoy the restaurants, relax, shop, and do a few activities.

Location of Ojai

Ojai is located in Ventura County in the valley under the Topatopa Mountains. It is 75 miles north of Los Angeles and not far from Santa Barbara. There are a few airports to fly into, LAX would be one good option. I use Skyscanner to find the best flight deals.

Do I Need a Rental Car in Ojai?

The short answer is yes. While you could Uber around town, getting to Ojai is best by car. Pick up a rental car at your arriving airport and head out on a scenic drive. I use Discover Cars for booking the best low-cost car when possible.

The Best Hotels and Resorts in Ojai, California

The capri hotel.

Travel Guide to Ojai, California

During our trip to Ojai, we stayed at the hip Capri Hotel . This renovated hotel has an incredible design and is set up perfectly for those who are coming in for a few nights. It has a pool and hot tub to enjoy during the day as well. What drew me to this hotel, in particular, is that it is boutique and the interiors are stunning. Inside the lobby, don’t miss to shop their favorite finds as well. Complimentary coffee in the morning and WiFi throughout. Book the best rates here .

Ojai Rancho Inn

Ojai Rancho Inn

My husband stayed at the Ojai Rancho Inn last year and loved the setup with the pool. It’s a wonderful choice located just as you get into town. They have their own bar as well so you can sip drinks while you hang out poolside. This is one of those smaller hotels, so you will want to book in advance especially on the weekends. Book the best rates here .

Caravan Outpost

Caravan Outpost

A very popular choice for their unique Airstreams you can book for a stay. Their chic Airstreams are really beautifully done with all of the amenities you need. It’s good to note this property does not have a pool. The lush grounds and communal spaces make for a wonderful backdrop for your stay. Book the best rates here .

Ojai Valley Inn

Ojai Valley Inn

Ojai Valley Inn is the most “resort-like” property in Ojai set with a golf course and a very large pool. If you’re looking for this kind of experience, you’ll love this hotel. The Spanish-style architecture is very chic, making it one of the more expensive choices in the valley. There is even an onsite spa as well to enjoy here. Book the best rates here .

Best Restaurants in Ojai, California

Farmer and the cook.

Many pop by this market to shop their local produce but did you know it’s also a vegetarian cafe? Mexican-inspired dishes, you can order plates like their delicious Huarache. I adored the food here and they have plenty of outdoor seating. If you’re headed on a hike, you could also stock up on supplies here. Don’t miss their baked goods as well!

Tipple and Ramble

One of the most charming spots in Ojai is Tipple and Ramble. They’re open in the late afternoons for charcuterie boards, wine, and drinks. This is a fun spot to come by for a relaxed night out with drinks. Their back patio is perfect as well for the year-round dining.

So much love for Ojai RĂ´tie and the food they serve. It’s dubbed as Lebanese French picnic food with a focus on the rotisserie and it is so delicious. Try their small plates, order their half chicken, and don’t forget to try their fresh-baked bread. One of our favorite meals in Ojai while we were there!

A totally vegan restaurant open for lunch and dinner, this spot is always busy. They have a wonderful patio to eat outdoors.

LOVE Social Cafe

One of the best spots for breakfast, pop in here for food made with extra love. Their mostly vegetarian menu has something for everyone, but don’t miss the breakfast burrito!

Drinks & Coffee

Topa topa brewing company.

Local to Ventura, Topa Topa Brewing Company (named after the mountains nearby) has wonderful craft beer on draft. Their patio sits out on the main street of Ojai and you can even see the Topa Topa mountains! If you’re looking for a snack, grab a bite at the in-house Little Sama that serves food.

Things to Do in Ojai, California

Take a pottery class.

Travel Guide to Ojai, California

One of the more unique things to do in Ojai is to take a pottery class with Firestick Pottery Studio . We spent a wonderful afternoon learning some of the basics of how to make our own ceramics. The studio is lovely, you can even pop by to shop for work done by local ceramicists.

The pottery class is a small group and mostly outdoors, so you can feel very comfortable. After going through the process, you create your pieces which you can leave there. You can then pay to have the pieces fired and glazed, then sent to your home. We just got ours back and absolutely love them. Book the class here .

Chill Poolside

Capri Hotel

While the weather is amazing most of the year, I would personally take advantage and chill poolside. Bring a few good books, stock up on snacks and a few drinks at the market, and stay by the pool for the afternoon.

Explore Downtown

The main street downtown has a ton of wonderful shops and eateries. If you’re looking to go for a stroll, I’d work your way down Ojai Arcade and Plaza. The section below has all of my favorite local boutiques as well if you’re looking to shop.

Go Olive Oil Tasting

Travel Guide to Ojai, California

One of the top things to do in Ojai is to try the local olive oil at Ojai Olive Oil Company . Set off a country road, it’s a stunning location to spend an hour or two. Amongst the olive groves, the tastings are given to you to go to enjoy at one of their picnic tables. My suggestion would be to bring a lunch or a snack to enjoy with. It’s a lovely spot to spend the afternoon on a sunny day.

Try a Honey Tasting

In downtown Ojai, the family-owned Heavenly Honey Company opened up a storefront. You can pop in to shop local honey (trust me you’ll want to bring some home). You can also stop by to do a honey tasting. I had never done one before and learned so much about the different kinds of honey. Plus, it was very educational to learn the importance of shopping for local honey!

Catch the “Pink Moment”

Ojai is very famous for what they call the “pink moment” in the valley. It’s when the sunset comes down and the alpenglow lights up the mountain peaks with pink and purple hues. The incredibly popular phenomena happen frequently hence why Ojai is so known for it. I would recommend looking at sunset times and getting there a bit before to catch this. One popular spot to see the “pink moment” is The Scenic Overlook of Ojai located on the 150.

Take a Hike

For those looking to get outdoors, there are a few places to go hiking in Ojai. You’re not far from Los Padres National Forest which would have more adventurous hiking trails. In town, the Ojai Meadow Preserve is popular for walking trails that are surrounded by stunning seasonal wildflowers.

Where to Shop in Ojai, California

One of the best parts of visiting Ojai is getting to shop at the local boutiques. The shops are incredibly well-curated and there are a variety of stores in town.

In the Field

This may be the most upscale shop with a section for women, men, babies, and home. You’ll find designers like Isabel Marant to incredible local ceramics. This was one of my favorite stops in Ojai.

Summer Camp

A hip store located in an old gas station. Pop in to find plants, things for the home, and other oddities. I also love the range of incense they have in the store as well.

Bart’s Books

No trip to Ojai is complete without a stop at Bart’s Books. The largest outdoor bookstore around, come stroll through a wide selection of books. While you browse, you can also find plants for sell too!

deKor & Co

A lovely home and design store with a range of pieces. You’ll find homeware, rugs, and furniture like antique chairs. There is even a selection of clothing as well. This shop is very well-curated and loved the atmosphere.

Fig Curated Living

The store for all things home and garden. You can find a little bit of everything here from ceramics to plants.

Use Booking.com for hotels and guest houses. They have the biggest inventory and consistently offer the best rates.

3. Book Your Tours & Experiences

Use Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours and experiences. They are my favorite tour search engines. I always check both as their inventory varies depending on the destination.

4. Book Your Car

Use Discover Cars or Rentalcars.com to find the best car rental deals. I recommend comparing rental agency reviews on Google to ensure you are booking with the best company in that destination, as the reviews are often more accurate than the car rental search engines.

6. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

I never leave the country without travel insurance. It provides comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong (ie. illness, injury, theft, and cancelations, etc.). I use it frequently for my travels to stay protected.

My favorite companies that offer the best coverage and rates are:

  • World Nomads (best for all-around)
  • Safety Wing (best for frequent travelers)

day trip to ojai ca

Located in Southern California in the mountains of Ventura County, Ojai offers the perfect blend of exploration and relaxation! Ojai is best known for its stunning Spanish-style architecture, relaxing spas, local shopping, and exquisite sunsets.

Ojai is the perfect destination for a relaxing weekend trip. There are plenty of fun things to do in Ojai to keep you busy, but not too many to feel overwhelmed. It’s the ideal spot for a laid-back weekend filled with great food, wine, and views!

Here’s a look at the best things to do in Ojai during your weekend trip to this gorgeous California location. But first, here are some questions you might have about traveling to Ojai!

Disclosure: Some of the links in this blog post are affiliate links, meaning that I earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase at no additional cost to you. This helps me keep the content on my website free for you to enjoy!

When Should I Visit Ojai?

Ojai is a beautiful destination to visit year-round, but like the rest of Southern California, the area shines in the spring through the fall. I’d recommend a  late-spring  or  early-fall  visit to experience mild temperatures and constant sunshine!

I would also recommend visiting Ojai during  the weekend . Many shops, restaurants, and other things to do in Ojai are closed on Monday and Tuesday, so it’s best to avoid visiting during these days. However, if you’re planning a long weekend in California, Monday is a great day to take a day trip from Ojai to a larger, nearby city, like Santa Barbara. You can learn more about popular day trips on this list of the best things to do in Ojai.

How Do I Get to Ojai?

Ojai is tucked away in the Topa Topa Mountains, so it’s a bit of a drive from the nearest airports. If you’re flying into Ojai, here are the closest airports to choose from:

  • Santa Barbara (SBA) Airport:  34-mile drive from Ojai
  • Hollywood Burbank (BUR) Airport:  54-mile drive from Ojai
  • Los Angeles (LAX) International Airport:  60-mile drive from Ojai

If you’re looking for the most affordable option, I’d recommend flying into Los Angeles. Since it’s such a large airport, flights and rental cars will be cheaper. If you’re looking for the closest option and a fun city to fly into, Santa Barbara is your best bet!

10 Best Things to Do in Ojai, California

1. wine tasting  .

Ojai is known for its collection of local wineries and tasting rooms, making wine tasting in Ojai a must-do activity while you’re in the city!

Topa Mountain Winery  is perhaps the most famous winery in Ojai, with plenty of space to relax, unwind, and enjoy spectacular views of the Topa Topa Mountain Range. Unfortunately, Topa Mountain Winery was closed for a private event during our visit, so we couldn’t stop at this popular spot.

We did, however, stop for a glass of wine at the  Majestic Oak Vineyard and Wine Tasting  in Downtown Ojai, and we loved our experience! The lush, shaded patio and quiet atmosphere make this one of the best things to do in Ojai!

If you’re looking for other wine tasting locations in Downtown Ojai,  The Ojai Vineyard Tasting Room  and  Casa Barranca Organic Winery & Tasting Room  are two additional options.

2. World’s Largest Outdoor Bookstore

Did you know Ojai is home to the world’s largest outdoor bookstore? Even if you’re not a big reader, you have to pay a visit to  Bart’s Books —one of the best things to do in Ojai!

Bart’s Books is an experience within itself that’s been an Ojai staple since the 1960s. During your visit, you can get lost winding through hundreds of shelves and thousands of books, or you can sit at a table sprinkled throughout the store to read a few chapters of your latest purchase.

3. Olive Oil Tasting

Olive oil tasting is one of the best (and most unique!) things to do in Ojai, California. You can take a self-guided tour of  Ojai Olive Oil —a family-owned farm that has been making olive oils from 150-year-old olive trees for decades. They also offer free tastings!

If you don’t want to make the drive up to Ojai Olive Oil (it’s about a 10-minute drive from Downtown Ojai), you can stop at the  Ojai Tasting Room Carolina Gramm , located just across the street from Majestic Oak Vineyard and Wine Tasting, to sample their olive oils instead!

4. Downtown Ojai Shopping

In Ojai, you won’t find any large retail chains. Large chain businesses with five or more locations are banned from Ojai. That said, when you shop and dine in Ojai, you are supporting locally operated and family-run companies, which I think is amazing!

In Downtown Ojai, you can explore the boutiques and other independent stories filled with handmade jewelry, plants, furniture, clothing, and more. If you love shopping for unique items, you’ll adore perusing the shops in Downtown Ojai. Some cute and trendy places to shop in Ojai include  Summer Camp ,  In the Field , and  Plant Based .

5. Local Eateries

Ojai has tons of fabulous places to eat—here are a few of the most popular!

  • Tipple & Ramble— Tipple & Ramble is a bohemian-style wine bar offering charcuterie boards and an Instagrammable, casual patio perfect for spending the afternoon!

  • LOVE Social Café— This spot is perfect for a quick breakfast bite, like a sandwich or burrito, and a cup of coffee.
  • The Farmer and The Cook— This organic restaurant serves breakfast and lunch with ingredients from their local farm just down the road!
  • Topa Topa Brewing Company— If you’re looking for a venue that’s a bit livelier, you’ll love grabbing a beer and enjoying the atmosphere of Topa Topa Brewing Company’s taproom location in Downtown Ojai.

6. Relaxing Spa Day

With dozens of spas, yoga studios, and wellness retreats scattered throughout the town, Ojai is a great destination to enjoy a relaxing, rejuvenating vacation.

However, nowhere beats  Spa Ojai  at the Ojai Valley Inn for a day of massages, facials, and other relaxing spa treatments. Guests can book massage therapy, hydrating facials, sound energy therapy experiences, natural nail therapy, wellness classes, and more.

7. Sunset Hiking

Since Ojai is in the mountains, it’s a beautiful location to go hiking.  Ojai Meadows Preserve  is a great location just outside the city to take a long walk, while the  Los Padres National Forest  is better if you prefer more challenging hikes.

Los Padres National Forest spans from Ventura to Monterrey. Some of the more popular hikes you can access from Ojai include Rose Valley Falls and the Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail.

Plus, you can try to time your hike to end around sunset to capture the “ Pink Moment “—the nickname for Ojai’s famous sunsets. Watching the sunset is one of the best things to do in Ojai!

8. Farmers’ Market

California grows some amazing produce! So naturally, visiting the farmer’s market is one of the best things to do in Ojai, California! Downtown Ojai has two popular farmers’ markets, and if you’re planning to stay for a long weekend, you should be able to visit them both.

The  Ojai Certified Farmers Market  occurs on Sunday mornings from 9 AM – 1 PM, and the  Ojai Community Farmers’ Market  happens on Thursday evenings from 3 PM – 7 PM. At each market, you’ll find tons of goods, like fruit, veggies, cheeses, flowers, and more from local vendors.

9. Beach Day Trip

If you’re looking to get your beach fix during your California vacation, you’ll be happy to discover that Ojai is just a short 15-mile drive from Ventura and a 33-mile drive from Santa Barbara. Even though there are plenty of things to do in Ojai to fill an entire weekend, it’s worth exploring the nearby cities, too!

If you’re looking to lounge on the beach for the entire day, I’d recommend visiting  Ventura since it’s closer to Ojai and offers a laid-back beach atmosphere.

However, if you’re willing to make the drive,  Santa Barbara  is filled with beautiful architecture, clean beaches, and a hopping foodie scene that’s worth checking out during your trip!

10. Hot Springs

Ojai has some great hot springs! You can visit during the day if it’s cooler outside or in the evening to relax under the stars.  Ecotopia  or  Matilija Hot Springs  are two places where you can find some of the steamy hot springs near Ojai!

What are the Best Places to Stay in Ojai?

Ojai is a small town, so options for accommodations are limited. The following accommodations are by far the most beautiful and popular places to stay in Ojai, so book them plenty of time in advance to ensure the best rooms at the best rates!

  • Ojai Valley Inn —Ojai’s most popular place to stay, equipped with beautiful scenery, a full-service spa, and a championship golf course.
  • The Emerald Iguana Inn —Cozy hotel with a beautiful garden view and outdoor pool that’s perfect for a couple’s vacation.

Ojai, California Daytrip from Los Angeles

O jai, California is a cute town just 90 miles from Los Angeles. Tucked away in a valley filled with orange groves is an oasis from stress, home to artists, health devotees and other urban escapees.

Surrounded by burnished peaks, its grasses green in spring and gold in summer and fall, the Ojai Valley was the setting for Shangri-La in the 1937 Hollywood movie The Lost Horizon. It is still a place where you can retreat from a fast-paced lifestyle to find serenity on oak-shaded paths.

Ojai’s main drag, Ojai Avenue, is filled with unusual little shops and restaurants nestled in a block-long Spanish arched arcade. Start your day with breakfast, it is served all day at Bonnie Lu’s . In good weather, choose a table in the courtyard.

If you’re in the mood for some perfectly cooked bacon, chicken steaks, or eggs Benedict, you won’t be disappointed. And let’s not forget about their fantastic biscuits, waffles, and blueberry pancakes – they might be just what you’re craving.

One dish I absolutely love ordering from here is Gunner’s Chorizo & Eggs. It’s a delightful combination of three scrambled eggs with onions and homemade chorizo, topped off with a generous layer of Jack and Cheddar cheese.

If you’d like a bit of exercise and adventure after breakfast head to the paved Ojai Valley Trail . It begins on Fox Street, one block east of the Arcade, and runs for 9.5 miles through the valley with a parallel dirt path for horses. Rent a bicycle or merely go for a lovely walk.

The trail follows the Ventura River into the valley, passing broad open spaces and wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. The terrain is downhill from Ojai. There is a market near the midpoint of the trail, in Oak View, for sandwiches and apples. Pick up lunch and enjoy it at the end of the trail in Foster Park that offers riverside picnicking and a playground for children.

The return is, of course, uphill as you climb into quiet neighborhoods and to a shady pathway frequented by locals walking dogs and pushing baby carriages.

In the afternoon take your book-lover self over to Bart’s , nestled under a 400-year old live oak at the corner of Matilija and Canada streets. Possibly the world’s only outdoor bookstore, Bart’s makes an inspired selection of books available day and night. After they close their doors, payment is on the honor system – pick a couple of titles and slip the money under the door.

From Bart’s, walk west a half block to Rincon, then turn left and walk two blocks to West Ojai Avenue. On your right, you will see OVA Arts .

OVA Arts in Ojai is a distinguished gallery showcasing accomplished local artists and select emerging talents. Focused on original fine visual arts, custom jewelry, and contemporary crafts, OVA Arts provides a quality venue for artists to exhibit and sell their work. The gallery encourages artists to explore new interpretations within their body of work, ensuring a diverse range of value and scale. Committed to being a creative hub, OVA Arts aims to inspire both the arts community and its featured artists, offering distinctive and compelling original art to patrons.

Head back downtown by walking east on Ojai Avenue for about five blocks. Take time to look leisurely through the shops and galleries in the Arcade. Glo West Beauty has wonderful soaps from Italy and France and Gunays Shop specializes in home textile and jewelry accessories. They are most known for their 100% handwoven products such as home textiles, pillowcases, rugs, and carpets.

Finally, it’s time to get off your feet – they’ve had a workout today! Stop into The Ojai Beverage Company for a glass of wine and a bite to eat in fashionable surroundings. The menu is great with appetizers like tuna tartare and fried artichoke hearts or heartier options like Baja fish tacos or mac n cheese with pulled pork.

Across Ojai Avenue, under a canopy of majestic oaks, Libbey Park beckons. As the day winds down, find a spot here to take in the sunset. Ojai is famous for its pink moment when the sun sets over the surrounding peaks and bathes the sky in every imaginable shade of…you guessed it…serene, reflective, and utterly amazing pink.

You can go outside to enjoy them in their patio area, or at a picnic table they have set outside under the shaded trees.

Their Tuscan extra virgin olive oil turned out to be our favorite. We took a bottle home to remember our day in Ojai.

It was super peaceful there and not at all busy for a weekday.

Take a Stroll at Ojai Meadow Preserves

Trails are open. You can walk or bike at Ojai Meadow Preserve . You can make the loop trail that is not even a mile long for an easy walk. It’s peaceful and beautiful as long as it is not crowded.

The flowers probably bloom in spring, making it a more picturesque spot.

Day Trip to Big Bear Lake, CA

A day trip to Big Bear Lake, California, is a great escape in Southern California during any season: fall, winter, spring, or summer. Here are 6 tips to help plan a day or a weekend getaway to Big Bear.

Ojai Restaurants

With only one day in Ojai, you can’t try all the restaurants. We suggest researching ahead or on the morning of your day trip to Ojai, just in case you need reservations.

Boccali’s Pizza & Pasta

If you’re in the mood for a casual Italian dinner, Bocalli’s is a fantastic spot for couples and families. Family-owned and loved by locals. There was already a line at the opening at 4 pm.

There are two locations. The one we ate at is at the Boccalli’s ranch. They have picnic tables outside under these large oak trees.

day trip to ojai ca

We ordered their garlic mushrooms and a cheese pizza cooked in a wood-burning oven. We are picky with our pizza, but I have to say the crust on this pizza is excellent.

day trip to ojai ca

The best part about Boccali’s is that their farm-to-table dishes come straight from their garden. Make sure to ask what those are on the menu.

For dessert, if it’s in season, do not leave without trying their strawberry shortcake.

We enjoyed our meal outdoors under the shaded tree, which was the perfect end to our time in Ojai.

Fall Season Bonus: Their pumpkin patch is right behind the restaurant. On that particular day, they had an honor system set.

Next time we are in Ojai, we’d like to try Nocciola’s for dinner.

I seriously loved this post! Sorry for my delayed read! Work stress has gotten to me lately and I’ve slipped away from the blogging world. I’ve never heard of this area but it sounds and looks so….what should I say! Lovely! Absolutely lovely. I love that you are taking day trips now. I’ve always loved Cali when I’ve visited so I’d definitely like to explore more of Cali via your blog. Hello, that pizza looks amazing. I know I’m in pizza central NYC but I want that pizza. Maybe the garlic mushrooms too. Sometimes I like mushrooms and sautĂ©ed in all that garlic could be good. That strawberry shortcake for sure looks amazing. Those strawberries look mouth watering. Wish I could have that right now. The local shops look fun to explore and love the honor system pumpkin patch. In NH, they have this spot to get ice cream that’s in the woods and it’s all the honor system. It’s cool! The ice cream itself isn’t our favorite but the concept is amazing.? Great post!

So sorry to hear it’s been so rough at work. You gotta take care of yourself first and foremost, so don’t worry about catching up here. My blog isn’t going anywhere… I hope lol. Thank you for stopping by and reading about our little day trip to Ojai. We had such a great day. It was so nice cause it was during the week and not that busy. Also sad because a lot of the local shops were either permanently closed because of COVID or just closed for the day lol. I think the weekends will probably be best for shopping. Just driving around was so nice. Lots of farms and horses. You would love it.

Honor system ice cream? Wow. Honestly, this is the first honor system I’ve seen here. Ojai is a different world from LA.

We passed through Ojai last fall on a drive to some parks. It was a ghost town! We’ll definitely have to get back up there.

It was definitely on the quiet side since it was during the pandemic, but I rather enjoyed it. I definitely loved the Olive farm.

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed reading this post, Kathy. Just when I thought there was one experience that I would really enjoy, another one came right after it! One of my favorite things to do when visiting a major city is to find an escape to somewhere close by with a slower pace and interesting things to do. Ojai is that place, and I hope to visit this unique town someday soon!

It is such a cute town. I totally felt so relaxed there and I hope to visit again too.

Ojai looks really wonderful Kathy. It helps you captured it beautifully in your photos. With wineries, good food, and quirky shops there’s so much to fill a good day there.

Yes, visiting Ojai definitely helped us feel good.

Your post was relaxing to read as I imagined ourselves visiting to get away from everyday life. I’d like to visit the olive oil farm and try the strawberry shortcake.

So happy to hear it was relaxing to read as that is how I felt when I was there.

What a lovely village! I can feel the relaxing vibe here. I can spend hours at the shops and the bookstore. And great food too, Thanks for sharing this part of California!

Very relaxing vibe! There are spas nearby that people book for the weekends. Perhaps I’ll get to do that one day.

I’ve never been to Ojai, even though it’s within a few hours drive of my family. The shops there look adorable – it looks like the perfect city break! Thanks for joining #TravelBlogTuesday 🙂

Ojai is such a cute and relaxing town. I loved the vibes and it was the escape I needed from Los Angeles. Hope you get to visit one day.

Ojai Valley Day Trip Things To Do & See

The Ojai Valley is an area in Ventura County, California. The valley’s hub is the City of Ojai, one of the smallest towns in the county, with just over 8,000 residents. It is located a few miles up Highway 33, about 12 miles inland from Ventura and the coast.

The Chumash Indians were the first residents of the Ojai Valley, and the name is derived from their word for “Valley of the Moon.” Ojai was settled in the 1800s and incorporated as a city in 1921. Later, Edward Libbey, a glass manufacturer, rebuilt the town after a fire in 1917.

Ojai Valley California

Ojai is centered within the east-west mountain range, which creates a unique sunset that few other towns in the world offer. Called a “Pink Moment,” the brilliant sunset over the nearby Pacific Coast is reflected onto the mountainside, creating a pink glow for several minutes on the Topatopa Bluffs at the east end of the Ojai Valley, which is over 6,000 feet above sea level.

At the western edge, the Topatopa Mountains at Nordhoff Ridge rise to more than 5,000 feet. The pink sunset is something everyone should witness.

Post Office Ojai California

The climate of the Ojai Valley is like the Mediterranean, with hot and dry summers. The area has drawn many health-conscious individuals who wish to rejuvenate their well-being with the dry air.

Known as a center of physical and mental health, many new-age gurus and yoga practitioners call the valley home, which creates a real sense of spiritualism. The Krotona Institute and School of Theosophy have been in the valley since 1926. Visitors are welcome at their library and store.

Matilija Creek Ojai Valley

Outdoor Things To Do Ojai Valley

Outdoor recreational activities are a large part of the culture in the valley. Los Padres National Forest provides opportunities for camping and outdoor escapes. Matilija Creek is a favorite spot for locals to splash under waterfalls, backpack, and soak in a hot spring.

Matilija Hot Springs Ojai Valley

The Lake Casitas Recreation Area offers camping, picnicking, and hiking on the western edge of the valley. Lake Casitas boasted nearly 32 miles of shoreline and was the site of the 1984 Olympic canoeing and rowing events. Rental rowboats and small powerboats are available, but swimming is not allowed.

Hiking & Biking Ojai Valley

From Highway 150, turn left onto Santa Ana Road and followed the signs to the recreation area. The Ojai Valley Trail runs for more than nine miles with a parallel path for horses. If you want to meet half the town, that is an excellent place to start.

Ojai California

Bicyclists, walkers, joggers, and outdoor types can be seen enjoying the beauty of nature. In April of each year, the town hosts a bicycle race called the “Garrett Lemire Memorial Grand Prix.” It began in 2004 as a tribute to a 22-year-old cyclist from Ojai who died racing his bicycle in Arizona the previous year.

If you are a tennis fan, Ojai hosts the oldest competitive tennis tournament in the United States, The Ojai, which has been held since 1893. The game draws up to 30,000 spectators who overtake every public and private court in the Ojai Valley.

Ojai Valley is child-friendly, with many parks. Mighty oaks with plenty of paths and picnic areas shade Libbey Park. The oaks are so loved that a local man chained himself to one a few years ago to protest its removal.

Libbey Park Ojai California

The Ojai Valley has become an art Mecca, with residents including principal musicians, artists, actors, and director Tim Burton.

Events Ojai Valley

Ojai California

The Ojai Music Festival was founded in 1947 and is an annual festival of performances by some of the world’s top musicians and composers; and occurs on the first weekend after Memorial Day.

Notable appearances have included Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. It’s held in the Libbey Park amphitheater and fills the summer air with notes as crowds gather to fill the wooden benches around Libbey Bowl. Free concerts are offered on the bandstand.

Ojai California

Ojai occasionally hosts the “Ojai Classic Rock Festival,” featuring tribute acts of various rock groups. The Ojai Film Festival was founded in 2000 and showcased independent films worldwide.

Another annual event is Ojai Day, the downtown street fair hosted by the Recreation Department. It’s not your ordinary festival – it’s a cultural explosion bursting with art, food, spiritual chants, multi-ethnic celebrations, and good old fashion fun and games.

Ojai California

With the Ojai Valley filled to the brim with delightful shops, art galleries, and places to retreat and rediscover your creative and spiritual side, why not pay a visit? Numerous restaurants dot the village, and many take advantage of local harvests with an eye toward healthy cuisine using fresh food.

The 15 best day trips from Los Angeles

Experience everything that SoCal has to offer with these day trip from Los Angeles to stunning nearby beaches, wineries and small towns

Michael Juliano

L.A. is great and all, but sometimes you need a change of scenery. If you only have one day to spare, consider one of these quick day trips from Los Angeles to some amazing nearby destinations. Luckily, living in L.A. means it’s an easy (well, depending on traffic) and often  scenic drive  to SoCal’s best beaches , small towns, wineries and gorgeous desert landscapes—all within three hours of the city. Oddly enough, taking advantage of the ease with which you can get  out of L.A. is easily one of the best things to do  in L.A.

From wine tasting in Santa Barbara and  vintage hunting in Palm Springs to  camping  in Joshua Tree or feeling the sand between your toes in San Diego, you’re sure to find a short trip (as opposed to a longer road trip ) worth taking on this list.

Top day trips from Los Angeles

Coronado

1.  Coronado

2 hrs by car There’s a reason Coronado has topped lists of the country’s best beaches: Its wide shores never feel overcrowded, the soft, fine-grained sand is easily walkable and the weather is practically perfect. Just a quick ferry ride or bridge drive from San Diego, this wealthy peninsula has the feel of a resort town with the amenities that come from being near a major city.

The beachfront grounds of the regal, red-roofed Hotel del Coronado  are a must-visit, even if you can’t foot its pricey room reservations. Back in town, stop into hole-in-the-wall diner Clayton’s Coffee Shop for a quick meal or MooTime Creamery for frozen treats. Coronado is also home to a sizable naval base, and while you can’t exactly visit, you can spot fighter jets coming in for landings and submarines surfacing off the coast.  —Michael Juliano

Ojai

2.  Ojai

1 hr 20 mins by car Ojai is a not-so-hidden gem close enough to L.A. for a day trip, but with a unique, relaxed feel that’s worlds away from busy city life. Start early with a decadent, hearty breakfast at Bonnie Lu’s , then stroll the town’s quaint main street; the antique shopping is great here, but relatively new school shops like Summer Camp are also worth a stop.

Tour an olive farm or a citrus grove, then grab an organic lunch at Farmer & the Cook . Alternatively, grab a a bite to go and explore the nearby trails in Los Padres National Forest , just north of town. If the weather is right, swimming holes abound along the Sespe Creek.

Back in civilization, check out Bart’s Books , an outdoor bookstore housed in an actual house (sans roof), or head up to Meditation Mount   (reservations required)  for incredible views, especially the famed “pink moment” at sunset.

Swing back to the center of town to explore its many wine tasting rooms, or grab a beer and a bite at Ojai Beverage Company . Chief’s Peak, the bar at Ojai Rancho Inn (where you should stay if your trip runs long), is a hip spot for an after-dinner drink; you’ll find more old-timers—and regular live music—at Deer Lodge down the road.  —Kate Wertheimer

Santa Barbara

3.  Santa Barbara

1 hr 50 mins by car Santa Barbara is a scenic and worthy vacation destination regardless of your starting point, but we’re fortunate enough to have relatively easy access (granted that the L.A. traffic gods are working in our favor).

Stearns Wharf is a go-to spot to see the Pacific, and nearby is State Street, filled with tons of shops and people-watching opportunities. And the Wharf isn’t the only place to see the water: Butterfly Beach, a relatively private spot, is situated next to the Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel and faces west for ideal sunset-watching views.

Grab lunch at La Super-Rica Taqueria —famous for being one of Julia Child’s favorite eateries. The lines tend to be on the ridiculous side, but it’s worth the wait for novelty’s sake alone.

If you’re traveling with family, spend a few hours at the Santa Barbara Zoo   (reservations required) . Otherwise, grab a glass of Pinot Noir at one of the many tasting rooms along the Urban Wine Trail   (hours and status vary by winery) ; the spots are located in downtown Santa Barbara, steps from the Amtrak station, and source grapes from local vineyards.  —Seth Kelley

Discover the best things to do in Santa Barbara

Laguna Beach

4.  Laguna Beach

1 hr by car Forget what you know from a certain unfortunate MTV reality show: Laguna Beach is an easygoing oceanfront city graced with lush vegetation, tidepools and a picturesque rocky coastline.

Main Beach is the spot of choice for downtown sunbathing, but you’ll find pristine, less crowded beaches at tide pool-filled Treasure Island, camper-friendly Crystal Cove or hidden Victoria Beach with its weathered, castle-like turret.

Walk the city’s downtown area to find a mix of shops, galleries and restaurants; many eateries cater to the well heeled, so we suggest bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy on a bench at the hilltop Heisler Park. Do, however, follow the smell of fresh waffle cones onto the enchanting Peppertree Lane for a scoop from Gelato Paradiso .

It’s not just about the beach here; you can explore the reservation-only Hortense Miller Garden  or thousands of acres of hillsides and canyons to find hiking trails, nature centers and the Pacific Marine Mammal Center   (closed through fall 2024) , a sea lion rescue. Summertime typically sees the arrival of two festival favorites: Pageant of the Masters , a live stage interpretation of classical paintings, and Sawdust Art Festival , an open-air artisan market that transforms into a Christmas village in late fall. There’s only one road in and out from the 5, so bring some patience during rush hour—alternatively, take the scenic route and follow Coast Highway through Newport Beach.  —Michael Juliano

Solvang

5.  Solvang

2 hrs by car After Danish immigrants grew tired of Midwestern winters, they began to make their way west and eventually settled in the pastoral Santa Ynez Valley. Though you won’t find many Danes in Solvang anymore, you will find wooden windmills, rural houses and a replica of Copenhagen’s Round Tower. The post-WWII structures are as touristy as they are charming; walk around town to find an assortment of Christmas shops, Hans Christian Andersen and Little Mermaid keepsakes, and sort-of-Danish bakeries.

Solvang’s downtown area is dotted with breweries and pancake cottages, including local standbys Solvang Brewing Company   and Paula’s Pancake House —and an increasingly impressive new culinary scene . For a bit of history on the area, make sure to stop by the humble Elverhøj Museum .

For a more offbeat adventure, head to the outskirts of town to  OstrichLand , which feels like the Jurassic Park of the ostrich and emu world. If you’re visiting in early January, make sure to schedule your trip around the annual Christmas tree bonfire . —Michael Juliano

Balboa Island

6.  Balboa Island

1 hr by car, 5 min ferry

Visitors to Balboa Island in Newport Beach can enter the man-made island by driving onto it via Marine Avenue, but it’s far easier—and more fun—to park your car on the Balboa Peninsula and take the Balboa Island Ferry for a quick and scenic five-minute trip across the water.

The first order of business: getting your hands on one of the island’s famed frozen bananas (make the Bluth family proud). Choose from rivals Sugar N Spice or Dad’s Donut & Bakery Shop; both claim to be the originators of the chocolate-covered frozen treat.

Take a jaunt around the 1.6-mile boardwalk surrounding the island, passing by multi-million dollar homes and streets named after gems, before strolling down Marine Avenue, the island’s main artery. Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants ( Wilma’s Patio is a staple), boutique shops, art galleries and the Balboa Island Museum and Historical Society .

Of course, there’s plenty to do out on the water, too: kayaking, parasailing, paddle boarding and the like. If you’ve got kiddos tagging along, the Balboa Fun Zone on the peninsula hosts a Ferris wheel and plenty of arcade games.  —Erin Kuschner

Discover the best things to do in Newport Beach

Los Alamos

7.  Los Alamos

2 hrs 20 mins by car Once a major stagecoach stop, this small, easy-to-miss town looks stuck in the past with its Old West style—but behind the facade are trendy treasures waiting to be discovered. Inside Bob’s Well Bread Bakery is a hip, stylish setup serving artisan breads—including gluten free options—croissants, sandwiches and more. Exploring antique shops and art galleries can easily fill a day here, just be sure to call ahead, as some places are only open on weekends.

A big draw of the Los Alamos area is its wine tasting—this is Santa Barbara County, after all—which can be done at Bedford Winery  and other local tasting rooms. Before you leave town, make a pit stop at  1880 Union , an event space with an authentic stagecoach saloon, or spend the night at the Victorian Mansion Bed and Breakfast . For being a single stoplight town (we haven’t actually counted, but you get it), there’s a bevy of delicious places to eat, such as  Full of Life Flatbread (known for its occasional A-list diners) and the destination-worthy Bell’s .  —Stephanie Morino

San Juan Capistrano

8.  San Juan Capistrano

1 hr 30 min by car, 1 hr 25 min by train A piece of California history and a quaint old town make San Juan Capistrano an off-the-beaten-path day trip with a lot of charm and a little learning. If you take Amtrak there, the train will drop you off right where you want to be—just a couple of blocks from a good cup of coffee at Hidden House Coffee .

From there, you can tour Mission San Juan Capistrano , founded in 1776 and arguably one of the mission chain’s prettiest links. The mission used to be known as a migratory destination for swallows in February, but the famous birds have been spotty in recent years. If you have your heart set on getting up close with some animals, check out Zoomars   (reservations recommended) , a petting zoo for kids of all ages (read: adults love it, too). It’s a historic ranch where you can also pan for gold like the California miners did. You’re also near Los Rios Historic District , which has some historic homes and museums that are perfect for a walking tour.

When you get hungry, you have several options: Heritage Barbecue serves remarkable Texas-style smoked meats,  Ramos House is a romantic spot known for great food and huge Bloody Marys on the weekends and  Five Vines is a nearby wine bar with snacks and sandwiches. If you want to catch a later train, head over to Swallow’s Inn , the local dive bar, where bras hang from the ceiling and bands play late into the night. You’re still within stumbling distance of the train station.  —Sara Fay

Oak Glen

9.  Oak Glen

1 hr 30 mins by car

Though you can visit Oak Glen year-round, the best time to head to this picturesque town to the east is September through November. The five-mile loop of orchards, ranches, shops and restaurants is a necessity for any New England transplant looking for fall foliage, and the town’s most popular activity— apple picking —is a nice alternative to canvassing L.A.’s farmers’ markets.

Many of the orchards, like Willowbrook Apple Farm  (opens Labor Day weekend), offer a cider press to make your own cider, which you can pair with a cinnamon roll or apple dumpling from Apple Annie’s Restaurant & Bakery . Stop by the Turquoise Pueblo  on your way back to L.A. for some beautiful handmade Native American jewelry.  —Erin Kuschner

Solana Beach

10.  Solana Beach

2 hrs by car, or 2 hrs by train

If you want to spend a day in San Diego, you can either try to go big (the San Diego Zoo! Balboa Park!  Padres game! All in one day!) or go small-town and spend a chill day in a cool oceanfront neighborhood. The beach towns north of San Diego—no, we’re not talking about Pacific Beach—are the stuff of the Beach Boys lyrics.

In Solana Beach, you’ll find laid-back vibes and beaches that aren’t completely overrun. It’s easy to get there from L.A. via Amtrak, and it’s a perfect way to day-trip because all the spots you’ll want to hit are within walking distance of the station.

Start at  the Naked Cafe for a beach-y brunch, then, either head down to the beach at Fletcher Cove or cruise along the Cedros Design District for window shopping, brewery hopping and people watching. There’s also a mix of cute boutiques, surf shops, restaurants, taco spots and bars along South Coast Highway. If it’s racing season, the Del Mar Racetrack  isn’t far—it would be either a long walk or a short car ride.

Before you catch the train back up to L.A., you have several good options for dinner near the tracks: Station Sushi is a solid locals’ spot for classic and creative rolls, Bangkok Bay  has some of the best Thai food we’ve ever eaten and Pizza Port is known for being a last-slice-and-beer-before-Amtrak place. It’s directly across a pedestrian crosswalk from the train station, and has been slinging pies and pouring pints for three decades.  —Sara Fay

If the San Diego Zoo caught your eye, book a ticket and spend a day with the animals.

Temecula

11.  Temecula

When hoofing it to Napa and Sonoma isn’t an option, Temecula is your next best destination for a day of wine tasting. Before sampling the grapes, stop by quaint Old Town Temecula, where you can pay a visit to the Temecula Valley Museum  for a historical walking tour.

Then it’s down to business; the heart of Temecula’s Wine Country includes more than 30 wineries, which you can bounce between at your own leisure (don’t drink and drive, folks!) or take a guided tour from one of the many wine tour companies in the area. Taste your way through the 70-acre Wilson Creek Winery and the red-focused Monte De Oro Winery   before heading to Maurice Car’rie Vineyard  for an educated tasting and a loaf of the vineyard’s famous sourdough bread, oozing with brie.

Just down the road, Magical Adventure Balloon Rides encapsulates another popular Temecula activity: riding in a hot air balloon. We can’t think of a better way to end your day in Temecula than by sailing over the town’s vineyards at sunset with a glass of Champagne in hand. —Erin Kuschner

Palm Springs

12.  Palm Springs

2 hrs by car Known for its ultra-fancy resorts and legacy of celebrity residents, Palm Springs is worth at least a weekend, if you can afford the time. Still, if you’re limited to 24 hours, make the desert city a choose-your-own-adventure day trip.

Start with brunch at Cheeky’s , and trust us that it’s worth the wait. If you’re in the mood to exercise, check out Indian Canyons , made up of three separate canyons (Palm, Murray and Andreas) that each offer hiking trails and fantastic views of the diverse landscape. Another of the best ways to see Palm Springs is on the Aerial Tramway , which helps visitors escape the heat of the desert with a scenic ride to the top of the San Jacinto Mountains.

If relaxation is your goal, shop at the outlets in Cabazon, or just get a massage and sit by the pool. The Palm Springs Art Museum  is small but displays works from incredible artists including Picasso and Warhol. For dinner, try reservations at Sandfish  for superb sushi and Japanese whiskey.  —Seth Kelley

Big Bear

13.  Big Bear

2 hrs by car; access may be limited during the winter This mountain town is home to some of L.A.’s closest ski slopes in winter, but don’t discount a summertime trip, when a dip in a mountain lake is the best way to keep cool. Rent a kayak or paddleboard to tour the water, and keep an eye out for the white-domed Big Bear Solar Observatory perched at the water’s edge on the north shore. The hiking here is also plentiful and offers some amazing views.

If you’re a bit more adventurous, stop by Bear Valley Bikes and rent a mountain bike; there are fire roads for beginners and lots of technical, downhill single track for more seasoned riders.

Back in town, check out the Bowling Barn  and the Alpine Slide , both of which are a blast with or without kids in tow. For a drink with the locals, head to karaoke night (which is pretty much every night) at Murray’s Saloon , the town’s self-proclaimed “five star hole in the wall.”  —Kate Wertheimer

Joshua Tree

14.  Joshua Tree

2 hrs 15 mins by car You’ll find Joshua Tree National Park on our shortlist for perfect day trips, road trips and weekend getaways from L.A. That’s for good reason: the magical desert spot—with its gnarled, ancient namesake trees, picturesque cacti and giant boulders—should be on every traveler’s bucket list, no matter how much time they have to spare.

Watch rock climbers scale mini-mountains at  Hidden Valley campground (first-come, first-served) or try some scrambling yourself at Jumbo Rocks . If you visit in spring, head south to Pinto Basin for a chance to see colorful wildflowers in bloom.

On the drive out, plan for a pit stop at the Cabazon exit, where you can explore the famed dinosaur park from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (and even, for a fee, climb inside the three-story T. Rex for a photo op in his mouth). Shop for cacti at multiple roadside marts on Twentynine Palms Highway, or hang a left at Pioneertown Road for a stop at Pappy & Harriet’s , which boasts a ghost town, small inn and great live music.

Another worthwhile detour is Landers, home of countless alien sightings and new-age sound baths at the  Integratron   (reservations required) . In the town of Joshua Tree, take your pick from a few tasty restaurants, including Crossroads Cafe   to rub elbows with locals. There are some good thrift shops around here, as well as the kind of quirky public art; be sure to check out the World Famous Crochet Museum , as well as prolific artist Andrea Zittel’s A-Z West tour.  —Kate Wertheimer

Salton Sea and Slab City

15.  Salton Sea and Slab City

3 hrs by car This day trip isn’t for everyone; but if you’re a fan of things decrepit, forgotten and way off the beaten path, head south to Bombay Beach at the Salton Sea. A popular vacation spot in the ’50s and ’60s, these days all that’s left of the once-booming seaside town are photo-worthy ruins and a lot of dead fish.

The Ski Inn remains; stop by for a drink or a greasy bite and decorate a dollar bill to hang on the wall or ceiling. Continue on to Niland, made famous by artist Leonard Knight’s Salvation Mountain , a giant folk art monument made from adobe, straw and thousands of gallons of paint (you may remember it from Into the Wild ). Beyond is Slab City, a former marine training base that now exists as a squat for campers, transients and desert dwellers who’ve created a community complete with a library, skate park and live music stage, “the Range.” If you’re respectful and friendly, folks may share their hot spring and swimming hole secrets, so bring a bathing suit—or do as the locals do and go in your birthday suit.  —Kate Wertheimer
