Is it safe to be near the lidar sensors on your vehicle?
Yes, the light is not hazardous. The low level of emissions falls under Class 1 limits and is essentially in the same category as lasers used in household appliances such as CD and DVD players.
What is the climate impact of your vehicles?
We use the fully-electric Jaguar I-PACE in San Francisco, and the chargers that we use are powered with 100% renewable energy.
What safety measures do you employ?
We follow a rigorous safety framework that combines multiple methods that help verify and validate our safety readiness and meet applicable laws and regulations. We’re dedicated to providing safe rides to our passengers.
How do your cars know how to share the road with cyclists?
Many of us are cyclists ourselves, and our personal experiences on the road help shape our engineering and product decisions. We also work with local bicycle coalitions to make sure our testing and validation procedures account for a diverse range of scenarios. Our vehicles are equipped with a combination of sensors designed to see 360 degrees around the vehicle, day and night, and our vision system can identify details like pedestrians and stop signs up to 500 meters away. Vehicles driven by the Waymo Driver all share the same behavior — safe, courteous, reliable — which removes a lot of the uncertainty for those around them. Making sure all road users feel safe is a top priority for us.
Can the cars be hacked?
Protection against hacking is a key priority, which is why we have multiple layers of security designed to prevent unauthorized sources from accessing our autonomous driving system. Steering, braking, and controllers are isolated from outside communication. The onboard computer that maintains responsibility for the driving task at all times is shielded from wireless networks. When our vehicles communicate with our fleet response team, all cellular connections are encrypted. And we’re constantly evolving our technology to help ensure we have secure protections to provide a safe ride.
What do you do with the camera footage you collect?
The cameras on the exterior of the vehicle are used to help the Waymo Driver see and improve its ability to safely navigate the road. Cameras within the vehicle are a way for us to make sure your ride goes smoothly. Among other things, we may use cameras to: make sure cars are clean, find lost items, provide help in case of emergency, check that in-car rules are being followed, and improve products and services.

Cruise is back driving autonomously for the first time since pedestrian-dragging incident
The gm-backed firm’s fleet has been grounded nationwide since an incident last year when a pedestrian was dragged by one of its driverless vehicles..

Cruise’s autonomous vehicles are officially back on the road and driving autonomously for the first time since one of its driverless vehicles dragged a pedestrian over 20 feet in San Francisco.
Cruise said last month that it would resume testing with manually driven vehicles focused on mapping and gathering road information — minor tasks for a company with as many autonomous miles as Cruise. But Cruise needs to show local officials that it is suitably apologetic for the pedestrian-dragging incident by going slow and talking a lot about safety and trust . The company is deploying its vehicles in Phoenix, Arizona, which has long been a hotbed for autonomous vehicle testing.
Cruise needs to show local officials that it is suitably apologetic
Cruise spokesperson Tiffany Testo said the company is deploying only two autonomous vehicles with safety drivers behind the wheel. In addition, the company has eight manually driven vehicles in the city. Eventually, the service area will “gradually expand” to include Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler — “measured against predetermined safety benchmarks.”
Cruise’s slow return to the road is noteworthy, given the huge hurdles facing the company in the wake of the October incident. Regulators accused the company of misleading them about the nature and severity of the incident, in which a pedestrian was dragged over 20 feet by a driverless Cruise after first being struck by a hit-and-run driver.
Several top executives have since left the company, including founder and CEO Kyle Vogt, and around a quarter of employees were laid off . GM has said it will reduce its spending on Cruise. And an outside report found evidence that a culture of antagonism toward regulators contributed to many of the failings.
With all that was going wrong, GM could have pulled the plug on Cruise . Indeed, the robotaxi company has been a huge financial drag on the automaker, losing $3.48 billion in 2023. Other car companies have pulled funding for their autonomous vehicle projects for much less. But instead, GM is sticking with it — and Cruise is gearing up to get back on the road — which is a sign that despite all its setbacks, the automaker is still intent on jockeying with Waymo, Tesla, and others for a spot in the race toward an autonomous future.

Cruise expands Walmart autonomous delivery pilot in Arizona
Cruise, the self-driving car unit of General Motors, has expanded its autonomous delivery pilot with Walmart in Arizona . The company will now be doing limited deliveries for customers in Chandler, in addition to Scottsdale.
The news comes a couple of months after Cruise had teased the expansion at a public meeting with Arizona state legislators, wherein Carter Stern, Cruise’s senior government affairs manager, said the company would expand to eight Walmarts in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas by the end of the year before exporting self-driving delivery to the rest of the country.
Cruise’s initial pilot with the Walmart located on Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community lands near Scottsdale began in November 2020. In April 2021, Walmart became an investor in Cruise to aid the development of its autonomous delivery ecosystem.
The expanded pilot, which now features the Walmart in north Chandler on Warner Road, will still have limited availability between the two stores. Cruise will offer delivery from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., in a service area that Cruise says is set by customer demand and varies by location. The company did not share its operational design domains in each city, which it says is constantly evolving.
Cruise did not respond to queries about how many vehicles are included in the pilot, but the company did confirm that it would be continuing to use its Chevy Bolt EVs, which will be chaperoned by a human safety driver.
The addition of Chandler brings Cruise’s potential addressable market in Arizona up to a respectable number. Chandler’s population was about 253,000 as of 2019, whereas Cruise’s initial pilot takes place in a less populated area.
Walmart customers are told that they’ll save money by opting to have their orders delivered by Cruise. To opt-in, they must place their Walmart order online and agree to receive SMS messages. If their order qualifies, they’ll receive a message from Cruise asking if they’d like to receive their parcel from one of Cruise’s vehicles.
If they say yes, they can track their order and receive notifications when the vehicle is two minutes away and when it has arrived. Customers then meet the car at the curb, using their phone to unlock the rear passenger door, grab the order and then, if polite, close the door.
The expansion of the self-driving delivery pilot in Arizona should bring in some much-needed revenue for Cruise as it sets out to increase both delivery and robotaxi operations.
Most of Cruise’s operations are focused on San Francisco, where the company is offering free driverless robotaxi services to the public . Cruise cannot currently charge for its ride-hailing service until it secures a permit from the California Public Utilities Commission.
Cruise’s service in San Francisco is available from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Arizona is also where Waymo, Cruise’s main competitor, operates a commercial robotaxi service in Phoenix.
This article was updated to include populations in the cities where Cruise is operating autonomous delivery for Walmart, as well as some limited information from Cruise. Previously the article stated that Cruise operated within a one-mile radius of the Walmart stores.

The Very Slow Restart of G.M.’s Cruise Driverless Car Business
An incident that seriously injured a pedestrian in San Francisco led Cruise to take all of its cars off the road. The question now is when they will return.
By Yiwen Lu
Reporting from Warren, Mich., and Mountain View, Calif.
At a sprawling complex in Warren, Mich., General Motors’ hopes for its driverless car future play out in a virtual reality headset offered to visitors.
In a video, the electric and autonomous car drives itself. Wirelessly connected to traffic lights and the surrounding streets, the car avoids collisions and reduces congestion, part of what G.M. calls its “0-0-0” vision — “zero crashes, zero emission, zero congestion.”
At least, that’s the plan. G.M.’s driverless future looks a lot further away today than it did a year ago, when Cruise, G.M.’s driverless car subsidiary, was deep into an aggressive expansion of its robot taxi services, testing in 15 cities across 10 states.
On Oct. 2, a Cruise driverless car hit and dragged a pedestrian for 20 feet on a San Francisco street, causing severe injuries. Weeks later, the California Department of Motor Vehicles accused Cruise of omitting the dragging from a video of the incident that was initially provided to the agency and suspended the company’s license in the state.
In November, Cruise voluntarily paused all operations across the country after facing widespread criticism that it was neglecting safety as it expanded its driverless taxi service. Cruise also pushed out nine executives, its chief executive stepped down , and the company laid off a quarter of its work force.
Now comes the hard part: Rebuilding a ruined reputation. In recent interviews with The New York Times, the three executives now running Cruise say they are in no rush to get back on the road. After learning the hard way about the risks of moving too fast with a cutting-edge technology, Cruise has slowed its breakneck development to a crawl to avoid another major mishap.
“For a long time before, Cruise was really moving fast and other competitors were not,” said Craig Glidden, who became president and chief administrative officer of Cruise in November. Now, he said, safety is Cruise’s “North Star.”
But going slow means the company risks falling far behind its top rivals. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has had driverless taxis operating in the Phoenix area since 2020 and San Francisco since late 2022 without serious incidents, and it recently expanded to Los Angeles . Zoox , an Amazon subsidiary, has been testing a steering-wheel-free robot taxi in Las Vegas since last June.
“Catching up with Waymo technologically is going to take three to five years at best,” said Alex Roy, a consultant and former executive in the autonomous car industry. He added that it was even harder for Cruise to catch up commercially because Waymo was “generating revenues with trust that Cruise never earned.”
Some industry observers were surprised G.M. didn’t shut down Cruise after its public meltdown late last year. Since acquiring the company in 2016, G.M. has spent over $8 billion on its driverless subsidiary. Cruise lost $3.48 billion last year, and another $519 million over the first three months of 2024.
“I was thinking in the late part of 2023 and into early 2024 that the most likely outcome was that they were going to completely turn off Cruise,” said Reilly Brennan, a partner at Trucks Venture Capital, which invests in the future of transportation.
But after slashing $1 billion from Cruise’s 2024 budget, Mary T. Barra, G.M.’s chief executive, reiterated her commitment to the company during earnings calls. In April, she told investors that Cruise had made “tangible progress,” although G.M. is exploring different options to fund the business, including taking outside investments.
After Cruise’s former chief executive and co-founder Kyle Vogt resigned in November, G.M. appointed two presidents who report to its board: Mo Elshenawy, previously the company’s executive vice president of engineering, and Mr. Glidden, who also serves as G.M.’s general counsel. In February, Cruise hired Steve Kenner, a veteran product safety executive, as chief safety officer.
The three executives all decide on safety decisions, such as when to take the next step in deployment. Those calls, Mr. Kenner said, have to be unanimous.
So far, Cruise has taken baby steps back to the road. In April, it picked Phoenix, the home to its operations center, to be the first city to restart testing with human drivers. On May 13, after a month of driving a handful of vehicles in order to understand local road features, Cruise transitioned into supervised autonomous testing , with two safety drivers per vehicle.
Cruise used to say its robot taxis were, on average, safer than a human driver. But so-called edge cases — incidents like road construction or erratic cyclists that humans can intuitively react to — bedeviled the robot taxis. Mr. Elshenawy said the cars had improved their navigation of construction zones and how they deal with emergency vehicles.
Cruise hopes to offer driverless ride-hailing service in one city by the end of 2024, while operating with safety drivers in fewer than five cities, Mr. Glidden said. That is, if the edge case issue can be improved.
While Mr. Elshenawy’s engineering team works to improve the technology, Mr. Glidden and Mr. Kenner have been traveling across the country to meet with regulators. Cruise has met with local officials and state regulators in Arizona, Texas and California, as well as with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It has also spoken with several cities in the Southeast where it previously tested its fleet.
In California, Cruise has answered questions from state regulators about driverless testing, but it is unclear if or when it could regain a permit. The talent pool in Silicon Valley is essential to Cruise’s business, so executives say they are committed to staying in the state.
Whether Cruise’s cautious approach restores faith in the company among regulators is an open question. Dave Cortese, a California state senator representing Silicon Valley, said the autonomous vehicle industry’s aggressive testing on public roads in the past had “created tension and distrust.”
For the company to win over regulators, it needs a “profound demonstration of transparency” to demonstrate that an incident like Oct. 2 will not happen again, said Mr. Roy, the consultant.
“We may not agree, but I think there are lots of places where we do agree,” said Tilly Chang, executive director of San Francisco County Transportation Authority. “But it is also unclear to us what it would take for them to get reinstated.”

Awkward moment Tom Cruise almost gets into Rishi Sunak's car
Hollywood legend Tom Cruise almost accidentally ended up in Rishi Sunak 's car after a mix-up at a heliport in London .
The Top Gun actor could be seen waving to adoring fans as he strode out onto the car park at London Heliport in Battersea.
Cruise, wearing a light grey polo and black trousers, attempts to yank open the door of the black Audi before realising it is the wrong vehicle.
The film icon, who has been spending time in London filming the latest instalment of the Mission Impossible series, then walks awkwardly over to the correct car while one of his entourage ushers him in.
Later on, Mr Sunak was spotted leaving the heliport and getting in the same vehicle Cruise had darted towards before.
Unlike the Hollywood icon, the Prime Minister makes no mistake and finds the correct car, while an aide holds the door open for him.
Wearing a white shirt underneath a black quarter zip sweater, while carrying a rucksack, the leader of the Tory party jumps into the backseat of the Audi while his assistants pack the car.
The comical incident appears to have taken place last Wednesday as Mr Sunak arrived back in the capital after a campaign trip to Cornwall and Devon.
The Prime Minister had taken the sleeper train to the southwest, arriving in Penzance on Wednesday morning.
He then returned to London by helicopter later that evening, arriving at the heliport in Battersea.
Number Ten declined to comment on the encounter.
As for Cruise, the Golden Globe winning actor, 61, has been shooting the eight film in the Mission Impossible franchise in the capital recently.
Last month he was seen good spirits as he touched down in London after flying himself there in his helicopter.
Cruise, who has had his pilot's licence since 1994 and owns several aircrafts, was seen at the helm as he landed at Battersea Helipad alongside a secondary pilot.
He had flown from Longcross studios where he is filming Mission Impossible eight which will see him return as agent Ethan Hunt.
The seventh film, Dead Reckoning Part One came out last year, but production on the second instalment, was hit with delays due to the Hollywood writers' strike.
It is not the only UK location where the American star has been spotted.
In March he was seen filming in Derbyshire along with co-stars Simon Pegg and Hayley Atwell.
The Mission: Impossible film series, beginning in 1996, is based on a 1966 television series of the same name.
Along with the action franchise, Tom is flying back into action for a new Top Gun sequel after the massive box office success of Maverick, which grossed nearly $1.5billion.
Tom will return as Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, and Paramount, which will be producing again, is hoping to reunite him with his recent costars Miles Teller and Glen Powell.
The news that Tom is back in business with Paramount — where he has released many of his recent films — comes after he signed up for a deal with Warner Bros. to produce and develop new films for that studio, including movies he'll star in.
According to Puck News, Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger is writing a script for the third entry in the series.
2 subjects taken into custody following Arizona reservation shooting: FBI
Two subjects have been taken into custody after an officer and a civilian were killed, and another officer and three others were wounded in a shooting incident in the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona early Saturday morning, the FBI said Sunday.
Both subjects -- one adult male and one juvenile male -- were identified by the FBI and Gila River Police and taken into custody, authorities said. They are currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during Saturday's shooting.
On Saturday, officers responded to an incident involving a large crowd at a home in Santan, District 4 in the community around 2 a.m. local time, when multiple gunshots were fired, according to the Gila River Police Department.
Six people were shot during the incident, including Officer Joshua Briese, who succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, police said. Briese had been with the force for less than a year and was still in field training, according to the police.
An unidentified person who was shot was also pronounced dead at the scene, police said. An unidentified officer was struck and remains in serious but stable condition at the hospital, according to the police.
The remaining three civilians who were shot were also recuperating at the hospital, the police said.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, with the FBI saying on Sunday that it is working on the case with the Gila River PD. There was no timeline for the investigation.
The FBI said it will hand the case over to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona for a charging decision when completed.
Braise's father was also an officer who died in the line of duty in a car crash in 2006, according to ABC affiliate KNXV .
Gale River Indian Community Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis offered his condolences to the victims.
"I know I speak for our entire Community when I say that we grieve for our fallen and injured police officers and every Community member touched by such tragic violence. Nothing cuts deeper than a life cut short. We will pray for our officers and their families, and for every Community member, every loved one, and every family impacted by what happened this morning," he said in a statement .

On Monday, General Motors’s self-driving car subsidiary officially resumed manual driving of its vehicles in Dallas, Texas, which will allow it to create maps and gather road information. Collecting that data will help train Cruise’s driverless systems and allow it to return to autonomous driving.
It follows Cruise’s earlier return to Phoenix in April . After roughly a month of manual testing, Cruise announced the return of supervised autonomous driving, meaning its cars will drive themselves with a driver ready and able to take the wheel if necessary.
Cruise was forced to suspend operations last October after one of its driverless cars dragged a pedestrian for roughly 20 feet after a separate — human-operated — car hit them. The incident led to the revocation of its license to operate in California, a recall of its fleet, layoffs, and the departure of several executives.
Testing in Dallas had been in its final testing phase for an autonomous launch before the incident. Now, after about eight months, Cruise is back.
“Dallas is a city on the forefront of innovation,” Cruise said in a statement . “Together, we believe self-driving technology can significantly improve road safety and provide a more sustainable transportation option that directly addresses the needs of Dallas communities.”
In the months since the October incident, Cruise has attempted to regain the public’s trust, hiring a Ford and Apple veteran to be its new chief safety officer and publishing a highly critical third-party report . The company has said it “maintained ongoing and extensive testing in complex, dynamic simulated environments and on closed courses” during its almost six-month operational freeze.
With testing resuming in Dallas, it may be only a matter of time before Cruise returns to Austin and Houston, where it had also been testing its vehicles.
Texas has become a major state for autonomous startups, playing host to at least 15 companies as of November. The state has also partnered with Cavnue to pilot the U.S.’s first autonomous freight corridor on a stretch of Texas State Highway 130 north of Austin.
Cruise’s operating loss totaled $3.48 billion in 2023. GM is planning to reduce the subsidiary’s expenses by about $1 billion to “slow the cash burn and align with a narrower focus in 2024,” it said in January. Before the October incident, CEO Mary Barra said Cruise could generate $50 billion annually by 2030.

'He was a sweet kid': Slain Gila River officer overcame hardships to follow in dad's footsteps
Joshua Briese, 23, was a Gila River police officer who died June 1 after being shot while responding to a disturbance call in Santan, District 4, of the Gila River Indian Community.
Briese had been with the department for less than one year and was still on field training, according to a Gila River Police Department Facebook post .
"It was a big surprise," said Briese's step-grandmother, Helen Briese. "He was a sweet kid. I loved him."
Helen Briese told The Arizona Republic she last spoke to Briese on Oct. 10, which she said was his birthday. "He was a wonderful person," she said.
Briese always wanted to be a police officer, she said. In 2019, when he was 18, Briese told KULR News he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, former Yellowstone County Sheriff's Officer David Briese.
David Briese was also killed in the line of duty in November 2006 in an automobile accident on Interstate 90, near King Avenue West in Billings, Montana, while responding to a backup call for an officer who was dealing with a combative impaired driver, according to the Sheriff's Office.
After the death of his father, Briese told KULR he moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, with his older brother, mother, and stepfather. But things at home were tough, he said. At the age of 16, Briese said he emancipated and moved back to Billings.
Being on one's own at a young age came with more responsibility — going to school and working to pay bills.
In an interview with KULR, Briese said he would wake up at 2:30 a.m. and work at the airport for four hours before he had to go to classes at Billings West High School . But he also made time for extracurricular activities and was a member of the school's cross-country team, KULR reported.
Briese told KULR he hoped his dad would think he was doing a good job in life. Helen Briese said she thinks he did, given what Briese had been through.
"He had kind of a hard life, but he made it through," Helen Briese said.
Briese was employed by the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry beginning April 2021. He graduated the Correctional Officer Training Academy in June 2021, then was assigned to ASPC-Phoenix. He resigned from ADCRR in June 2022.
"With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of Officer Joshua Briese of the Gila River Police Department. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as to the second officer injured in this tragic incident," ADCRR said in a post to X.
One other person died in the early-morning shooting Briese was involved in. Four others, including another officer, were injured.
Gila River Indian Community Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis called the incident "tragic."
"I know I speak for our entire community when I say that we grieve for our fallen and injured police officers and every Community member touched by such tragic violence," Lewis said.
The Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office released a statement regarding Briese's death:
"YCSO is heart broken and in disbelief upon receiving word this morning of the Line of Duty Death of Gila River Arizona Police Officer Josh Briese, Joshie as many of us called him," the statement said. "All we can say is God Speed and rest easy. Knowing Dave & Josh are together again, both left this world serving their community and doing what they loved. RIP."

I toured an Arizona neighborhood that banned cars and found a walkable oasis in the middle of a Phoenix suburb
- Culdesac is a car-free neighborhood in Tempe, Arizona.
- The housing startup has 200 residents who use bikes, scooters, and ride-share services to get around.
- Take a look inside the walkable oasis filled with courtyards, local shops, and plenty of shade.
Walkable neighborhoods are on the rise. In a country run by cars, many millennials and Gen Zers are willing to spend more to live in a community where it's easy to get around without a vehicle, according to a 2023 study by the National Association of Realtors .
Enter Culdesac — the budding Arizona block making a name for itself as the "first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the US."
Located in Tempe, home of Arizona State University, Culdesac is a community where cars are banned. It's been a project in the making since 2018. Last year, the neighborhood opened to residents. Now, 200 people live on the 17-acre block, a company representative told Business Insider. Eventually, Culdesac plans to house 1,000 residents.
As a New Yorker without a car, Culdesac intrigued me. So, on a recent trip to Arizona, I visited the car-free neighborhood and thought it felt like an urban oasis in the Phoenix suburb .
Culdesac is in the greater Phoenix area.
The neighborhood is located on the east side of Tempe, just about 10 miles from Phoenix.
I recently got a private tour — and the chance to chat with the CEO.
During my visit, I met with CEO and cofounder Ryan Johnson. After years of working in the real estate and transportation industries — and traveling to walkable places around the world — he was inspired to create a neighborhood free of cars.
From New York City to Budapest, Johnson says his travels launched a passion for cities.
"I saw those places and said, 'Wow, this is a much better way to build a city — with thoughtful architecture, great transportation systems,'" he told BI.
Johnson added that developments in the transportation industry, from ride-share apps to public transit systems and electric bikes , have made living car-free possible in places like Arizona.
Johnson, who grew up in Phoenix and currently lives at Culdesac, hasn't had a car in 14 years.
All around the property, I spotted electric bikes and scooters.
Visitors and delivery drivers can park their cars at Culdesac, but residents cannot.
The company representative told BI that for residents with cars, "it's regulated through their lease agreement that they won't park on-site or on any public streets within 0.25 miles."
Some residents park their cars elsewhere in Tempe, while others, like Johnson, don't have a vehicle at all. Residents get around on foot, bicycles, electric bikes, and electric scooters. The neighborhood has more than 1,000 bike parking spots.
One Culdesac resident previously told BI that living without a car can be challenging outside the neighborhood, as the surrounding city was built for vehicles.
However, according to the company's website , Culdesac provides residents with a mobility package worth almost $3,000 a year to make transportation easier. It includes a complimentary Valley Metro pass for the light rail that goes through Phoenix and Tempe and discounts on ride-share apps like Lyft and Waymo , a self-driving cab service.
My tour began in the plaza.
The plaza, located across from the neighborhood light rail stop, is the communal center of Culdesac. It's marked by a sculpture by artist Matthew Salenger that doubles as a canopy.
Here, there are games, shaded tables, and weekly events.
Every Thursday evening, Culdesac hosts Little Cholla, a public outdoor night market with music, vendors, food trucks, art, and activities such as line dancing and yoga.
There's also a two-story gym.
A two-story building in the plaza with giant windows is home to the neighborhood fitness center. It offers workout classes and is lined with equipment.
Across from the plaza, there are local shops run by residents.
From thrifted clothing to unique dishware and candles, there's plenty of local shopping at Culdesac.
According to the company's website , there are about 11 micro-retail shops, including a market, a laundromat, a medical spa, an art studio, and a plant shop.
These micro-retailers have the option to live in their workspace.
The company representative told BI that the small-business owners at Culdesac are residents, and some even live in their stores thanks to a zoning permit that allows them to do so.
All the stores have kitchens and bathrooms, and some have bedrooms.
Steps from the plaza, the neighborhood has a restaurant with outdoor seating.
In April 2023, Culdesac's Cocina Chiwas opened. It's a family-owned Mexican restaurant serving Chihuahuan cuisine.
As I strolled the communal paths, I noticed that Culdesac didn't feel as hot as the surrounding streets. That's because there's no asphalt on the property.
It's no secret that the Phoenix area is hot — sometimes dangerously so in the summers. So Culdesac was built to keep pedestrians cool without asphalt — a road material that gets hotter in the sun.
In the residential areas, the walkways are narrow.
Culdesac intentionally placed the buildings close together to create as much shade as possible.
The buildings' color is also no accident. Culdesac chose white because it reflects sunlight rather than absorbs it.
Between residential buildings, there are courtyards with grills, tables, hammocks, and firepits.
More than half of the entire property is open, landscaped space.
Culdesac has apartments ranging from studios to three-bedroom floor plans.
Culdesac currently has 172 units. More will open in the fall, and the neighborhood will eventually have 760 units.
Studios start at $1,300 a month, one-bedrooms are $1,400, two-bedrooms are $2,100, and three-bedrooms are $2,900 a month.
On the outer rim of Culdesac, there's a bike shop with tune-up services.
Archer's Bike Shop sells manual and electric bikes. And Culdesac residents get complementary services and product discounts.
Culdesac seems like a place where people can not only live car-free but also get to know their neighbors.
After my visit to Culdesac, I chatted with Brad Biehl, a 24-year-old resident from Colombus, Ohio. Biehl has lived in the neighborhood for six months. He said one of the best parts of living there is the sense of community.
"We're usually in environments where we walk from our door to our car and from the car into the place," Biehl said. "But here, to go anywhere, I usually pass at least two or three of my neighbors, even when I'm just walking to the light rail right around the corner."
Biehl added that he's optimistic about the future of Culdesac when more residents and retailers come in.
"While there are still not a ton of people here yet, there's way more going on than I would've expected there to be," he told BI. "The number of serendipitous interactions that have taken place with the limited number of residents makes me super excited for what people will experience here."
