Endeavour River

Courtesy Gone Fishing

The Endeavour River is wide at the mouth, and progressing north, lined with over 25 species of mangroves. As it branches it changes dramatically to narrow creeks lined with palms and rainforest flora. It is along the Endeavour River that Solander first documented much of Australia's flora.

The Endeavour River offers very good mixed fishing right in the heart of Cooktown on a river steeped in history. This river is a great example of how a tropical estuarine system should be.  Deep holes, submerged timber, sand flats, smaller inlets and tributaries, weed beds and all your mangrove species in one river.  By casting lures to the numerous snags and fallen giants of the rainforest that litter the waterway, you will be bound to catch either the predominant species, barramundi or jacks, fingermark, trevally, barracuda or sharks. Brilliant family fishing can also be had on the local wharf and immediate vicinity using a variety of methods.  Many big barra, Spanish mackerel, queenfish and trevally are landed here throughout the year.

Crocodile

To really explore the system and appreciate it a boat is necessary.  Bring your own, hire a tinny or take advantage of a local guided charter.  If you enjoy lure/fly casting a vessel equipped with an electric motor will provide you with lots more opportunities and a heap more fun.  Boats can be launched opposite the seaview Motel or at the Marton boat ramp 10 minutes north of town.

The best time for croc-spotting is during the winter months of June-August on a low tide. Saltwater crocodiles are most commonly seen in the North Arm of the River, with many different-sized crocs reluctant to slide back into the cold water.

River cruises are popular for croc spotting and bird watching and the following companies operate tours on the Endeavour River:

  • Cooktown Barra Charters
  • Cooktown Dinghy Hire  and River Cruises
  • Gone Fishing

Welcome to Cooktown, the Tropical North Queensland town whose history and heritage draws 25,000 visitors to it each year.

It’s not just the story of Captain James Cook that you’ll find here, but a rich Indigenous history and plenty of evidence that Cooktown was booming in its gold-rush glory days. For a town that sits on the Cape York Peninsula, what surprises most visitors to Cooktown is its accessibility. All roads lead to Cooktown, whether you take the fully sealed road (the Mulligan Highway from Cairns) in just four hours, choose to four-wheel drive the coastal Bloomfield Track or take the 45-minute flight connection from Cairns. If you find yourself yearning to explore Cooktown yourself, chart your course with this guide to 10 things to do in Cooktown.

Grab a bite to eat at the onsite cafe

Not all Visitor Information Centres are bloomin’ beautiful, but this one backing onto Queensland’s oldest regional botanic gardens (est. 1878) certainly is. Spend the morning exploring the heritage listed Cooktown Botanic Garden’s 62 hectares, which house five major botanical collections including those species collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander in 1770.

After wandering the Cooktown Botanic Gardens, fuel up with a bite to eat at the onsite café, whose open veranda is the perfect vantage spot to watch the world go by. The café is open seven days a week, dishing up coffee, cake breakfast and lunch. The menu rotates based on seasonality, so you can be assured no two meals will be the same.

If you’d like to work up an appetite for your meal here, step it out along the scenic rim walking track which links the Botanic Gardens to Finch Bay and Cherry Tree Bay – two of the beaches in the area.

Drop a line near Cooktown & you're bound to reel in something good

Cooktown’s waters offer some great fishing. The wharf is the local’s favourite spot to try and catch a feed. And there are fishing platforms along the waterfront park. Bait up for the chance to reel in Spanish Mackerel, Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Fingermark, Trevally and more.

If you’ve brought your own boat, check out the Endeavour River – there are a couple of boat ramps – or the Annan River. If the wind permits the local reefs and fantastic fishing are less than an hour offshore. Or take a charter to get the benefit of the local knowledge of where the fish are biting!

Retrace the town’s colourful and diverse history

The Cooktown History Centre

James Cook and Joseph Banks spent 7 weeks in Cooktown – longer than anywhere else in Australia. And Cook left a legacy of charts of the east coast that 100 years later showed that Cooktown was the ideal place to establish a port to service the Palmer River Gold finds in 1873.

Cooktown grew rapidly into a vibrant town as the only way in and out of the goldfields – the Queen of the North – a town of 7,000. Promotion in China led to a large Chinese population both in the town and the goldfields.

The History Centre and Waalmbal Birri Heritage & Culture Centre , sitting side by side in Charlotte St, are great places to retrace Cook’s stay and the town’s subsequent development in the late 1800s.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Explore cooktown's many attractions.

Fabulous panoramic views from Cooktown's Grassy Hill Lookout

GRASSY HILL LOOKOOUT

From Grassy Hill take in the panoramic views of Cooktown, the Endeavour River and hinterland and the Coastline and Coral Sea. Check out Grassy Hill Light, the working lighthouse built in 1886. You can walk up Grassy Hill in the same way as James Cook and his men walked up in 1770 to look for a safe exit through the reef ("I saw with great concern innumerable sand banks and shoals lying all along the coast in every direction"). The walk takes about 30 minutes from the town centre but is steep. Or you can drive up to the top where there is plenty of parking.  Great views are had all day but sunsets and sunrises are particularly special

Cooktown's Nature's Powerhouse and Vera Scarf Johnson Exhibition

NATURES POWERHOUSE

An innovative modern building in the Botanic Gardens; it was built to house the Vera Scarf Johnson collection of fabulous botanical illustration of local flora that were left by the Artist to Cooktown. It often puts on other art exhibitions and has a good selection of books relating to Cooktown and its history. It is also the Visitor Information Centre and boasts a lovely cafe surrounded by the Botanical Gardens.

Cooktown's famous Milbi Wall - a popular local reconciliation project

THE MILBI WALL

The unique Milbi (Story) Wall was built at the invitation of the Cook Shire Council to the local Aboriginal peoples to tell the story of Cook’s stay from their perspective. The ceramic tiles telling the stories were developed by a local group of Aboriginal artists and story tellers with the help of a well known potter. It is built in three sections; the first tells the Creation Story and how the Endeavour River and Cooktown were made; the second section commemorates the historic meetings between the local peoples and Cook and his crew and their experiences through subsequent early settlement and the gold rush; the third section illustrates the historic 1967 referendum when the right to equality for the Aboriginal peoples was finally recognised.

Cooktown Saturday Markets

COOKTOWN MARKETS

Cooktown Markets are held every Saturday from 7.30 to 11.30am in the Lions Park just past the Bowling Club. There you can find good fruit, veg and home produce together with excellent cakes and preserves and plants for the garden. A couple of Asian takeaway stalls ensure you wont go hungry and you can get a fish feed for dinner from the Nicko the fishmonger’s van.

Beautiful Keatings Lagoon and its birdlife lies 5 minutes out of Cooktown

KEATINGS LAGOON

The scenic Keatings Lagoon conservation park protects the freshwater wetlands adjacent to the Annan River. It is on the right five kms heading south out of Cooktown, well signed with a car park. Many different water birds head to this waterlily filled lagoon, particularly in the dry season making it a destination for bird lovers. Take the beautiful gentle walk through the paperbarks around the lagoon - see Map

Cooktown's historic and beautiful Botanic Gardens

BOTANIC GARDENS

Cooktown Botanic Gardens is situated within the Gallop Botanic Reserve of 62 hectares at the (east) end of Walker Street. It was established during Cooktown's gold rush boom years, mid 1880s to early 1900s but fell into disuse before being restored from 1984. A good selection of plant species in a beautiful setting including examples of some of the many living specimens collected by Banks & Solander while the Endeavour was being repaired as well as traditional bush tucker. Strolling through the Gardens and enjoying their tranquillity is one of our favourite ends to the day. Check out the detailed Map for more information

Drop a line in or just check out the activity and great views from Cooktown Wharf

COOKTOWN WHARF

No visit to Cooktown is complete without checking out the wharf. Wonderful views particularly at sunup and sundown and always something going on. A working commercial wharf where the fishing boats come in to unload and reprovision; you can often see the live coral trout being unloaded to head for Hong Kong restaurants. And it's the favourite fishing spot in town too.

Finch Bay is Cooktown's favourite beach

Picturesque Finch Bay is Cooktown's main beach. Follow Walker Street east past the Botanic Gardens into Finch Bay Road where there is parking by the path leading to this spectacular beach. With Mt Cook behind there are great views out to the Coral Sea and Cape Bedford to the north. A favourite spot for dog walking but be careful of crocs in the creek behind the beach.

Grouper Feeding at Cook's Landing Kiosk, Cooktown

GROUPER FEEDING

In the season Tom feeds the giant groupers who readily come to Cooks Landing wharf for a feed. Usually around 5-6pm and depending on tides, it’s a great spectacle as these giant creatures feed from his hand on fish carcasses.

Reconciliation Rocks

RECONCILIATION ROCKS

In Adelaide Street near the end of Furneaux Street is the are ‘Reconciliation Rocks’ and the new Reconciliation Memorial. These commemorate the famous first act of reconciliation between Europeans and Aboriginal Australians. This followed what appeared to be the only dispute that arose during what was otherwise an open and friendly series of exchanges between Cook and his crew and the local Guugu Yimithirr people. The dispute arose when Cook’s crew caught a number of turtles. Turtle meat was greatly prized and it was customary to share this with the Elders first. Ignorant of the local etiquette Cook’s crew took umbrage when the Guugu Yimithirr tried to remove some turtles from the ship and a scuffle broke out; fires were lit, spears thrown and shots fired, fortunately with no serious injury. Shortly after the two sides met up and re-established amicable relations at this site

Visit the wonderful James Cook Museum to discover Cooktown's unique history

COOKTOWN MUSEUM

This fantastic museum run by the National Trust occupies the beautiful old Convent building in Helen Street. Experience the rich history of this remarkable town from Cook's seven week visit through its heyday as a port servicing the Palmer River Goldfields to the 20th century. The Museum also tells the stories of the local Guugu Yimithirr peoples who have lived here for many thousands of years. See Website for more

Check out the great photos of old Cooktown and exhibitions at Cooktown History Centre

THE HISTORY CENTRE

The History Centre is housed in the old Telegraph Office in Charlotte Street, Cooktown’s oldest building. It has a great array of old photos, stories and displays that provide a unique insight into Cooktown’s fascinating history. The exhibition is set out in a timeline which tells Cook town’s story from 1770 to current times and is a great supplement to the James Cook Museum. See Website from more.

Stroll around the picturesque Cooktown Cemetry and take in more of our history

COOKTOWN CEMETERY

Cooktown Cemetery on the McIvor Road heading west out of town is well worth a visit. It illustrates the diversity of peoples that have contributed to this historic town and it's also a reminder of the transience of life and the regular tragedies of earlier times. Famous graves include the Jardines, Mary Watson, the 'Normanby Woman'. The Chinese Shrine with its inscription 'Respect the Dead as if they are present' is a reminder of how many Chinese passed through and lived and died in Cooktown and on the Palmer River during the Gold Rush Years. We enjoy the (well-marked) walk through the mangroves from the bottom of Hogg Street. see Wikipedia for more.

Cooktown's beautiful waterfront

WATERFRONT WALK

Follow Sheridan Esplanade along the foreshore of the Endeavour River towards its joining with the Coral Sea. Stop to play a tune on the Musical Ship. Continue meandering north across the Memorial Park and past the James Cook Memorial. Follow the River of Life Walkway that features hand painted ceramic tiles depicting the diversity of Cooktown and its history to the Cairn marking the spot where Cook beached the Endeavour for repairs and the Milbi Wall. Check out the three parts of this unique wall with its tiles designed by local Aboriginal artists to tell their history and the story of Cook’s stay from the Aboriginal perspective. Walk past the boat ramp, the statue commemorating the miners in the Palmer River Goldrush know as ‘Mick the Miner’ and the Queen’s Steps made for HM Queen Elizabeth II when she visited Cook town to open the James Cook Museum in 1970. Pass Cook’s Landing Kiosk and the Riverside Café (perhaps stopping for a coffee or refreshment) to Cooktown Wharf. See who is catching any fish before heading out along the new Waterfront Park that provides beautiful views across the bay and out to sea.

Flanked by pristine coastline on one side and ancient rainforest on the other, this track to Cooktown is a feast for the eyes. Experience the captivating natural beauty of Australia's Top End through the eyes of our visionary artists. The area is home to ancient coastal rainforests, stoney Black Mountains and intricate Mangroves providing habitat for many forms of marine life that have evolved over thousands of years alongside the Aboriginal people. ‍ Travel alongside the winding Bloomfield River, ending at the base of the beautiful Bloomfield Falls ; also known as Wujal Wujal Falls or "Roaring Meg". Leaving Wujal Wujal behind, we're ready to venture to the elusive Black Mountain; a place of mystery and legend to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike. To traditional owners, Kalkajaka is a sacred battlefield of both spirits and warring clan groups. It's also a site where the natural elements of water and fire formed the Earth, giving birth to numerous other landforms along the Trevathan Range. Kalkajaka has its own Rainbow Serpent, called Walumba. Enjoy lunch and a cold one at the legendary 1875 Lions Den Hotel. The Lions Den Hotel is one of the oldest Pubs in Far North Queensland and though it's well off the beaten track, the pub has long been on the bucket-list for adventure seekers in Cape York . When the 1878 Cooktown Botanic Gardens were established, they were the first of their kind in Far North Queensland, offering the ideal environment to cultivate a diversity of exotic plants found only in the Cape York region. Today, the acclaimed gardens represent and reflect the cultural heritage of Cooktown , Australia's European Pioneer Settlement. It is also a popular refuge for local birdlife, including the Zebra Finch and Crimson Finch. We will make our way to the top of Grassy Hill, one of Cooktown's most popular attractions. Even if you're only inspired by a walk in the park, Grassy Hill offers a 360-degree view of Cooktown , The Endeavour River and The Great Barrier Reef. As you climb the Hill and look over every direction, you'll notice that very little has changed since Captain James Cook first set foot on this land.
