Corcovado Tour

Why should you do a corcovado tour.

A Corcovado tour is the opportunity to see wildlife as anywhere else in Costa Rica, a place mentioned in many magazines including NatGeo, rated as one of the leading national parks in the world by some, and considered to be a flora and fauna paradise by biologists, and naturalist tour guides.

Corcovado National Park has 2.5% of the biodiversity of the world. It is considered to be the place with the greatest concentration of biodiversity per square hectare on the planet

In conclusion, a Corcovado tour is a must if you love nature, photography, and wildlife. There are ways to visit any of the main stations in Corcovado National Park. You can choose a one-day Corcovado Tour , a two-day Corcovado Tour , or a three-day Corcovado Tour .

The main ranger stations of Corcovado National Park are Sirena Station, San Pedrillo Station, La Leona Station, Los Patos Station, and also less visited but not less relevant: La Tigra, and Los Planes Ranger Station.

About your guide

Yasnir Salazar was born and raised just a few kilometers from the lodge in an indigenous community where economic opportunity is scarce. He grew up hunting and fishing in the area and started his career in tourism doing odd jobs at the lodge. Over the years, he learned to captain the boat and lead tours to Cano Island. Based on the smiles and excitement from anyone who went on an excursion with him, it was evident that he could become one of the top guides in the area. His upbringing gave him a deep knowledge for the forest, and his positive attitude made him a natural guide. By working at the lodge, he was able to save up for his guiding certification and now he is one of the top rated guides in Corcovado. Yasnir lives onsite although he spends many nights at our overnight camp.

...We also experienced the jungle tour with an overnight stay. The trip started a little differently because a third party forgot to pick us up. However, it was resolved well and quickly. We would recommend this tour to everyone!! What an adventure!! Many thanks to Yaznir, our guide. He heard and saw so much, unbelievable! You sleep in the middle of the jungle in a good tent, which is on an elevation. A shelter has been made to provide extra protection against rain. The food during this trip was well organized and tasty. Thanks for bringing the food Jeffrey! The night walk was unforgettable and Yaznir's enthusiasm certainly contributed to this. In short, a stay in a beautiful place with fantastic staff and beautiful tours!

What to expect

Corcovado is the most exclusive national park in Costa Rica with the strictest rules and limitations on how many people can enter, who can guide tours, and activity protocols. Only a select list of local guides are allowed into the park, and the stations are boat access only.

These rules and protocols have saved many critically endangered species on the Osa Peninsula from extinction. This conservation success is an example of the measures that must be taken to save and bring back rainforests and their inhabitants. Up until recently, it was very difficult to spot any large wildlife like a tapir due to overhunting and habitat destruction . Now, the tapir sightings are part of what makes the area so attractive for tourism.

The park is an incredibly special place precisely because it is a wild and undisturbed rainforest. The fact that it is so exclusive and has such strict regulations helps to ensure that it remains that way, providing a haven for critically endangered species and allowing visitors to witness nature in its purest form. While it's true that there's no guarantee of specific animal sightings, visitors to Corcovado can appreciate the beauty and wonder of the rainforest as a whole, and the chance to catch a glimpse of some of its incredible inhabitants is truly a bonus.

The trails in this area are irregular and have ups and downs.

CASCADA CORCOVADO

SIRENA AND SAN PEDRILLO OVERNIGHT

The tour starts at 6:00 am at the main beach of Drake Bay, Playa Colorada. We take the boat to Sirena Station, this trip lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, with luck, on the boat ride we will have the opportunity to see marine animals such as whales, dolphins, etc..

We disembark on the beach of the Sirena Area, where we will put on our shoes to begin the first hike.

In this tour the trails are short, well marked, and flat. The objective of this part of the tour is to interact with the group and try to see as many animals as possible , since in the Sirena area the animals are more accustomed to humans, and there are few big predators. The most common animals to see are small mammals such as monkeys, coatis, agoutis, etc.

This hike ends at noon, when we take the boat to the San Pedrillo Area.

The boat ride between Sirena and San Pedrillo takes about 45 minutes, we disembark in the wildest area of Corcovado.

THIS IS WHERE THE ADVENTURE BEGINS!

In this tour the trails are irregular, wilder and in a more natural environment , we start walking to the San Pedrillo Waterfall where we will have lunch and refresh ourselves in fresh water pools.

The objective of this part of the tour is to get to know one of the only primary rainforests in the world , with ancient trees, forests over 3000 years old, land of top predators, such as pumas, jaguars, etc.

Here the animals are more elusive and maintain their natural behavior , so it is more difficult to see them, but you can get a great surprise, like seeing a tayra hunting a sloth, or a puma hunting a spider monkey.

The main reason why we love this part of the tour is because of the interaction between prey and predators , even if it is just hearing or feeling them, it is something magical. We will walk on trails that only we walk, always looking for the purest and most adventure oriented.

Here you will feel the force of nature, you will feel small and spied.

In this par t of the tour the speed of the walk is faster, mainly to be able to surprise the animals are very elusive and to arrive at the station before nightfall.

Once we have covered a total of 16km and arrived safe at the station, we will have dinner and get ready to rest, for today we lived enough adventure.

The next day, we wake up to the sounds of the jungle, have breakfast and recharge energy for the last part of the tour.

In this hike you will walk about 10 km, always visiting wild trails and away from humans.

You will have to opportunity to refresh in the river, and see a beautiful waterfall and we arrive at noon to los planes where we take the lunch and a 4X4 wait to take us back to Drake bay .

PLEASE NOTE: – The tour is for adventurers. – In the rainy season, there is a lot of mud, you have to cross rivers, there are obstacles on the trails, since they are irregular.   – The tour is focused on appreciating nature in its purest state, therefore the observation of animals is unpredictable. – An adequate physical condition is required , if you have doubts you can consult us.

WHAT INCLUDES?

  • Entrance fees to the National Park

WHAT TO BRING?

Sirena and San pedrillo Full Daytour

The  tour starts at 6:00 am in Playa Colorada in Drake Bay , we take a boat to the Sirena Ranger Station, this ride lasts approximately 1:15 hours and perhaps with luck we can see marine life on the way.

We disembark at Sirena beach and begin the tour of the trails of the Station, the objective of this tour will be to search for animals, the guide carries a telescope to see them more closely.

This tour will run until noon, where we will return to the beach to take the boat and head towards San Pedrillo Station , the purest part of Corcovado, where here the objective changes, the idea is to observe a primary tropical rain forest of 3000 years, surrounded by those huge trees, with the refreshing shade of the primary forest, we will walk trails immersed in the jungle where you will feel the energy between predators and prey.

In this all-day tour  you will be able to see two completely different ecosystems, and visit the two most important Corcovado Stations with their great differences.

The return is leaving Corcovado walking and you will take a boat that will return you to your hotel. The hours are approximately between 4 and 5 pm.

CORCOVADO PARK TOUR TWO NIGHTS

The adventure begins at 6:00 am from Drake we take the boat to Sirena Station, your journey will go along the lush Pacific coast for approximately 1.15 hours. With a little luck, it will be possible to spot marine life such as turtles, dolphins or whales and seabirds.

Arrival time is estimated at 7:30 am arriving at the black sand beach of Sirena, we will walk to the station to check in and leave the excess luggage, we prepare for the first walk, walking the trails in search of animals until approximately 11:00 am, where we return to the station to take lunch and take a strategic break, since at that time it is very hot and the animals rest.

We walk around the station and in the afternoon, we go out again to visit new trails, swim in rivers with natural pools, walk through the thickest part of the forest until 5 or 6 pm, where we must return to the station to have dinner and rest. The guide will accompany you during dinner, and will show you where to sleep. There we will take the opportunity to talk and get to know each other better.

The day starts early before 5 am, the group will get ready to leave before sunrise. The first hours of the day are cool in temperature, which makes it perfect to try to see some life.

After the first hike, the group will arrive at the station for breakfast around 7:30 am. After breakfast, we will go for the last hike at Sirena Station, and leave with our luggage, as we will take the boat to San Pedrillo Station at noon.

The adventure begins…

Once we disembark at the San Pedrillo station, we will walk to the waterfall and stop there for a refreshing break and lunch in a very different environment than the one we have been seeing. In the afternoon, you will hike to the camp, passing through a primary forest, where the trees are so tall that they cover the sunlight.

On this hike, we change the focus of the tour, the objective is no longer to look for animals (although they are there) but to experience a real jungle, a very intense place, with an ancient forest. Here we will need to alert our senses to perceive the jungle.

This hike ends at the place where we will sleep and have dinner.

We wake up to have breakfast with the incredible sounds of nature, after getting ready we will do the last hike of the tour, the departure hike.

During the next few hours you will explore hidden trails full of rivers and thick jungle. It is important to note that this tour is not offered by practically any other operator, it was designed for adventurous tourists who really want to explore the wildest trails of Corcovado.

Get ready to dive into the deep jungles and live an unforgettable adventure.

The tour ends after lunch and we return to Drake Bay around 12 pm or 1 pm.

Tour objectives:

This tour aims to visit the two most important stations of Corcovado Sirena and San Pedrillo. The first part of the trails are easy and is more focused on trying to see animals, the second part is more focused on adventure and looking to be connected with nature, more solitary trails and with a thicker jungle.
