Travel + Leisure / Brian Kopinski

Several of the best travel steamers are marked down for Memorial Day! Score deals on the Polardo Hand Held Portable Travel Garment Steamer , Nesugar Steamer for Clothes , Hilife Steamer , and Nori The Nori Press (with coupon).

Despite our best efforts, packing for a trip often means arriving at a destination with wrinkled and creased clothing. And although many hotel rooms come equipped with an old-school ironing board, it can be a huge pain to unfold the clunky equipment and physically iron everything on arrival. Worse still, if your room doesn’t have an ironing board, paying to have the hotel press and steam individual garments quickly adds up.

Thankfully, portable handheld steamers make it easy and affordable to ensure you'll always look your best while traveling. The compact steamers tend to weigh about a pound or two and can easily fit into a carry-on bag or suitcase. Whether you prefer straight steaming, or would like a multi-purpose tool that irons as well, our list includes plenty of standout options for travelers of all types.

Best Overall

Nesugar g3 steamer.

It's sleek and stylish, so you won't mind this sitting on your bathroom counter for frequent use.

The water reservoir is quite small, so it needs to be refilled if you're steaming multiple garments in a row.

For a sleek steamer that truly looks like a high-end travel accessory, we love the compact Nesugar G3 Steamer. It comes with a soft bag to protect it while traveling and takes up no more room than a standard hair iron; plus, it's very lightweight at less than one pound. While it may be small, this steamer is also very powerful and heats up in just about 15 seconds. We used this to steam everything from silk to linen and there was no damage to any garments and, more importantly, it’s actually powerful enough to quicky get wrinkles out of pieces that had been stored away in packing cubes for days.

The Details: 2.6 x 1.65 x 9.1 inches | 0.75 pounds | 15 seconds to heat | 70 milliliters | 900 watts

Longest Cord

Hilife steamer.

This budget-friendly steamer is portable, yet it comes with an especially large water tank for efficiency.

This option is not cordless.

Travel steamers are significantly smaller than traditional stationary steamers which can sometimes mean the water tank is inconveniently small — but that’s not the case with the Hilife Travel Steamer for Clothes. This portable steamer offers a large, 240-milliliter tank with a total run time of 15 minutes before needing to be refilled (which is likely more than enough time to steam your garments for the day ahead). And, although this option isn’t cordless, it does have a nine-foot cord that will allow you to press your items without needing to be right next to a power outlet.

The Details: 6.8 x 5.5 x 7 inches | 1.8 pounds | 240 milliliters | 700 watts

Travel + Leisure / Alexander Huang

Best Splurge

Nesugar steamer for clothes.

The steamer's nozzle can rotate 90-degrees, so you can direct the steam where you need it.

There’s only one setting, so you can't adjust temperature or steam amount.

Just slightly larger than the Nesugar G3, this steamer is another powerful choice for any traveler. Simply fill the 70-milliliter reservoir with water and 15 seconds later it's ready to steam. What sets this steamer apart is the 90-degree rotating nozzle that allows you to direct your steam in a vertical or horizontal direction without spilling water all over your garment. It also includes a wall mount bracket, so you can store it easily when not in use, and a soft bag to pack it away while traveling.

The Details: 3.1 x 1.65 x 8.9 inches | 0.8 pounds | 15 seconds to heat | 70 milliliters | 900 watts

Best Budget

Bear travel steamer.

This affordable steamer comes with a handful of attachments and features a chic, gold-rimmed design.

The cord is only six feet long.

We love the look of this steamer — the modern design and gold-rimmed finish give it a look that is much more sophisticated than any garment steamer has the right to be. But the Bear Travel Steamer’s looks aren’t the only reason we love it. The budget-friendly price point and small size make this option great for travelers who rely on a carry-on bag only.

This option heats up in 10 seconds and has a run time of about 10 minutes. The only issue is that it has a tank capacity of just 120 milliliters, which is a bit inconvenient if you’re hoping to steam multiple garments at once.

The Details: 8.31 x 5.91 x 2.99 inches | 1.45 pounds | 10 seconds to heat | 120 milliliters | 1,000 watts

Best Iron/Steamer Combo

Nori the nori press.

This high-end option allows for casual steaming and more crisp, pressed lines thanks to steaming and ironing capabilities.

It’s the most expensive option on our list.

Nope, this gadget isn’t a hair straightener. Nori’s unique iron/steamer combination makes it super simple to look put-together on the go — even after multiple days of travel. The clamp-enabled press can create sharp collars and sleeves, but instead of simply ironing, it also has a built-in steaming system that allows for quick and easy pressing on the go. It’s extremely compact and easy to pack, and although the tank is only 29 milliliters in size, the Nori Press still offers continuous steam for up to 10 minutes at a time.

The Details: 14 x 5.79 x 3.11 inches | 1.4 pounds | 3 minutes to heat | 29 milliliters

Most Compact

Polardo hand held portable travel garment steamer.

This lightweight steamer only weighs a little over a pound, which makes it great for tossing in your carry-on.

It’s extremely small and might be tedious to steam lots of garments with.

The idea of fitting a garment steamer into a tiny or already overstuffed bag might seem impossible, but the Polardo Hand Held Portable Travel Garment Steamer was truly designed to be as compact as possible. The ultra-lightweight steamer weighs a little over a pound and the compact size is about the same as a bottle of shampoo. We also love that this product heats up in just 25 seconds, effectively eliminating the waiting time that's usually associated with high-end steamers.

The Details: 7.7 x 3.4 x 3.4 inches | 1.2 pounds | 25 seconds to heat | 118 milliliters | 120 volts

Best Ergonomic

Electrolux garment steamer.

This option might be a little clunky, but the ergonomic handle makes it by far the most comfortable to use.

The large size isn’t the best for fitting in a carry-on bag.

If you prefer convenience (and tend to pack in a checked suitcase) this steamer might be the best option for you. The Electrolux Portable Handheld Garment and Fabric Steamer isn’t particularly compact or lightweight, but it does offer the best steaming action and largest tank capacity on the list. We particularly love this option because of the ergonomic design that makes it easy to both grip and manipulate while steaming all kinds of garments. We also love that the Electrolux heats up in just 30 seconds for fast and efficient steaming.

The Details: 12.4 x 7.1 x 7.1 inches | 4.02 pounds | 30 seconds to heat | 300 milliliters | 1,500 watts

Best for Thick Fabrics

Conair extremesteam hand-held fabric steamer.

This high-end steamer is ultra-efficient and powerful enough for thick fabrics like wool or denim.

The steam flow isn’t always consistent and can sometimes spit water.

The Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Hand Held Fabric Steamer is your best option if you want a product that can handle thick fabrics like wool, but also provide gentle steaming for items made of silk or chiffon. The “ExtremeSteam” technology also kills up to 99.9 percent of germs through steaming alone which makes it very appealing for getting off all the nasties that cling to your clothing after a full day of traveling or sightseeing. This option boasts a tank capacity of 215 milliliters which provides an excellent run time of 15 minutes.

The Details: 5.6 x 8 x 13.6 inches | 7.3 ounces | 40 seconds to heat | 215 milliliters | 1,875 watts

Tips for Buying a Travel Steamer

Prioritize portability.

Having a large steamer is great for efficiency, but it won’t do you much good if you aren’t able to comfortably fit it in your carry-on or checked suitcase. If you want something you can genuinely bring with you on each and every trip, you’ll want to opt for a small, handheld one that can easily fit in baggage of all sizes. Most handheld steamers should fit the bill, but make sure to read the dimensions to ensure you’re getting something compact and portable.

Look for extra features and attachments

It’s wise to purchase something with bonus features that can be used on various trips. There are some steamers that come with attachments that allow them to function as an iron for when you need a crisp press, while others allow you to steam thicker materials like wool or corduroy, too.

Steamers can be a faster and more eco-friendly alternative to ironing. According to Brian Jones, product and travel expert at Best in Edmonton, a steamer can be used instead of an iron to eliminate creases from garments, especially in delicate fabrics that cannot be ironed (such as silk, wool, and pleated goods). However, you’ll want to note that steaming your clothes may produce a smooth, casual finish rather than the crisp, pressured gloss of ironing.

Yes, it does work to clean your clothes if you're in a pinch. “Running the steamer removes odors and perspiration residue from garments, and helps to remove creases from goods that aren't best suited to laundering or dry cleanings, such as silks, vintage items, pieces with leather ornamentation, and other specific materials,” Jones explains.

The easiest steamers to use should have a large water tank, steady bursts of steam, and a comfortable grip that will allow you to get into nooks and crannies without having to strain your arm.

Yes! Portable steamers can be packed in carry-on luggage and personal items and go through airport security without issue. Just be sure to remove any remaining liquid before packing.

Even the most seasoned travelers open their suitcase after landing and find themselves with a daunting task ahead: deciding if their wrinkled clothes can get by with a thorough shake out or if reinforcements are needed. Of course, most hotel rooms are equipped with irons, but the task of setting up the ironing board and fitting each article of clothing just right can feel overwhelming. Not to mention, some pieces are too delicate for harsh heat. But is it easy to travel with a clothing steamer instead?

When I set out to find the best travel steamer a few years ago, I admit, I was hesitant about such a practical item taking up precious carry-on space. But when traveling as a family of four, as I often do, an ironing board set-up can quickly become a catch-all for toys, shopping bags, or electronics and simply gets in the way. Since I began testing these steamers, it’s rare I leave home without one.

Of the 13 steamers I've tested, my favorite models have one thing in common: a metal soleplate, allowing you to touch the steamer to the clothing to smooth out tricky spots. While steamers are mostly celebrated for their ability to get the wrinkles out, they also kill 99 percent of bacteria. Important to note, most steamers come with the recommendation of distilled water to keep the sediment buildup at bay, which I did not use as most of us don’t have easy access to it when we travel.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

My top picks:

Best overall steamer, best lightweight steamer, best long-lasting steamer, best foldable steamer, best steamer for international travel.

  • Most leakproof steamer

Best two-in-one steamer

How i tested:.

Each steamer has been tested on jeans, khakis, T-shirts , button-down shirts , linens, blouses, and jackets based on the following criteria:

  • Size/packability : Does it fit into a weekender or carry-on?
  • Power/efficiency: Is it faster and easier than setting up and using the hotel iron? Or at least just as good?
  • Water capacity: How many times do you have to refill the reservoir to steam an entire outfit?
  • Leakproof: Will you be late to dinner while waiting for the wet spots to dry?
  • Durability/longevity : Is the quality going to withstand enough trips to make the steamer worth packing and purchasing?

Can I travel with a portable steamer?

Most travel steamers will fit into a carry-on and can go through TSA without any issues; just make sure any remaining liquid from the reservoir has been emptied before getting to the airport.

Is a portable steamer worth it?

If you are going to a formal event or know you’re packing clothes that are famous for wrinkling, then yes, it's worth adding to your suitcase. A new perk I’ve recently come to love about steamers is I actually pack less clothing knowing I have a way to freshen up an item I want to rewear. This makes packing a simpler capsule wardrobe all the more possible. As someone who typically only uses a carry-on, I do value my space and find the steamer to be an easy item to remove should I be running short on room. Below, the six best travel steamers to pack on your next trip.

Image may contain: Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, and Electrical Device

I have a new favorite steamer. While the Nesugar handheld steamer used to be my most-used, the Proctor Silex 2-in-1 compact garment steamer has moved into the top spot for me. It’s only seven ounces heavier than the Nesugar model and steams continuously for almost 10 minutes without needing to refill the reservoir. Plus, it works effectively on every type of garment—even jeans with stubborn wrinkles. Often we don’t know where or how many outlets our hotel or Airbnb will have, so the 10-foot cord on this steamer is much appreciated, as it allows you to move around comfortably. Surprisingly, this is also the most affordable steamer at $20. If you are someone who will only travel with a steamer for special occasions, this one is a safe choice.

Weight: 1.63 lbs. Water tank capacity : 4 oz. What I like most: Affordable, de-wrinkles all fabrics, heats up in 45 seconds, effective brush attachment Where there's room for improvement: Reservoir can be hard to completely empty

Image may contain: Appliance, Device, Electrical Device, and Blow Dryer

I've used this steamer regularly for over a year, and very much appreciate the smart design. The Nesugar portable steamer weighs less than a pound, but produces a solid stream of steam. With a small reservoir, I was surprised the water lasted for almost 10 minutes, allowing for five items to be de-wrinkled (though it was not powerful enough for jeans). There is a button to turn the steam on, but you don’t have to hold it down, which I like. The metal soleplate allows for an ironing option, which is what I ended up using to smooth out the jeans. An adjustable head not only makes the steamer compact, but gives you the option to steam at different angles. Originally, I wondered if frequent adjusting of the head would loosen the feature, but it is still going strong after countless trips. The unit also comes with a wall mount so you always have a place to hang it at home.

Weight: 12.8 oz. What I like most: Lightweight and packable, adjustable head, comes with a wall mount Where there's room for improvement: Works best on lighter fabrics

compact travel steam iron

One of the more expensive steamers I tested, the Conair is definitely the winner in terms of power and functionality—a T-shirt can be good as new in less than a minute. While the steamer can blast wrinkles from jackets, you can also lower the setting for more delicate items. The Conair turbo is the only steamer I tested that had various settings to choose from. It even has a built-in creaser, if that’s your thing. Because the steamer is more powerful, it uses more water, so refills are necessary after a few items (depending on the fabric and intensity of the wrinkles, of course). The Conair Turbo would’ve taken the top spot if it were more compact for traveling (its dimensions are 13" x 8" x 6", making it a bit bulky for carry-ons). If you find yourself using an iron a lot at home, this steamer may actually be your best bet.

Weight: 3.2 lbs. Water tank capacity : 6.6 oz. What I like most: Can de-wrinkle anything, various settings to choose from, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Hard to fill with its small opening, on the larger size for travel

compact travel steam iron

This is by far the most aesthetically pleasing steamer I tested and ranks number two for packability. With a 30-second warm up and automatic steam (no trigger to hold), the Seekclass was off to a good start, but it did take four minutes to steam one pair of pants and I had to utilize the metal soleplate in order to get the job done. The reservoir is tiny, so I had to refill it before I could finish the pants, too. Because the hole to refill is so small, it’s also hard to get out any remaining water when you’re ready to pack up the unit. Knowing this, it’s smart to let the steamer dry out at your earliest convenience to keep any build-up from forming.

Weight: 1.4 pounds Water tank capacity : 3.5 oz. What I like most: Its foldable handle is great for travel, metal soleplate, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Leaks when on its side; has small, hard-to-fill reservoir; heavier material requires at least one refill

compact travel steam iron

International travelers will be happy about the automatic dual voltage with this steamer. While the heat up is quick (about 20 seconds), the reservoir of the steamer is painfully hot—so be sure to only hold on to the handle. Unfortunately, the high temperature of the reservoir requires a pause between fill-ups, but you can get three items done with one tank. My favorite feature is the automatic steam from the get-go, which means your fingers get a rest from holding down the trigger button that comes with many other steamers. The main reason this steamer remains on the final list is for its appeal to those who frequently travel abroad.

Weight: 1.2 lbs. Water tank capacity : 3.4 oz. What I like most: Dual voltage, collapsible handle for travel, automatic heat-up (no power button), no trigger needed to release steam Where there's room for improvement: Cannot promptly refill reservoir because the tank gets so hot

Most leakproof

Image may contain: Blade, Weapon, Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, Electrical Device, and Razor

I tend to gravitate toward the hybrid steamers that can also be used as an iron. The large iron plate on the Steamery Cirrus 3 is almost as efficient as a full-size iron, but I could only steam three items with one tank of water. Something that stands out with this steamer is its ability to remain leak-free. This is one of the most important features for me as I tend to travel with a busy itinerary, which means I may be steaming in a hurry and the last thing I want to do is take out a hair dryer to dissolve the wet spots left behind by the steamer. I even gave it a bit of a shake test and nothing spilled. Where this steamer falls short, honestly, is the price.

Weight : 1.8 lbs. Water tank capacity : 3 oz. What I like most: Large iron plate, completely leakproof, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Expensive price point, reservoir empties after three garments

Image may contain: Device, Electrical Device, Smoke Pipe, and Appliance

Rounding out our list of the best travel steamers is this hybrid steamer/iron that comes highly recommended by senior editor Megan Spurrell . “I was drawn to the Nori steamer because of its sleek design—two-in-ones are always ideal for travel, and not needing an ironing board seemed like a plus,” Spurrell says. “I put it to the test the day of my destination wedding this past month, on both my dress and my husband's linen suit. It did get the job done, and both functions (steaming and ironing) deliver.”

The unique, compact steamer features two aluminum plates that can simultaneously iron the front and back of a garment, getting the job done in half the time. Another perk: It offers six fabric settings (polyester, silk, wool, cotton, denim, and linen)—so no matter what you pack, you can rest assured it will be wrinkle-free and free of any damage when it's time to wear.

Weight : 1.4 lbs.  Water tank capacity : 1 oz.  What I like most: Double plates, dual voltage, automatic shut-off after 10 minutes of no movement Where there's room for improvement: Its tiny reservoir means it's best reserved for smaller jobs; it can be tiring to hold while smoothing out a very crinkled shirt.

Why You Need a Travel Iron

Although any iron is designed to accomplish roughly the same goal, there are some pretty important distinctions. Most notably, a travel iron should be significantly smaller or at least lighter than those that are best suited for home use.

While some of the travel irons on our list are bigger than others, they are all suitable for being packed away in your luggage and put to use when you arrive at your destination.

While early versions of travel irons lacked some of the features and power that could be found on more substantial models, today’s selection rivals home models on every front.

You no longer have to decide between portability and performance when it comes to banishing wrinkles from your clothes while taking a trip. Selecting any of the best travel irons listed below will put you in a perfect position to look sharp wherever your path might lead.

Best Travel Irons: Our Top 7 Picks

There are many high-quality options out there, but we’ve paid close attention to a few broad factors when making our final choices.

Each of the following travel irons has something unique to offer, but all of them offer a great design, durable construction, and plenty of value, making them a top pick.

1. Rowenta DA1560 Travel-Ready Steam Iron – Best Design

Rowenta DA1560 Travel-Ready Steam Iron

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use
  • Fold-flat handle
  • Limited water capacity
  • No automatic shutoff

There is plenty to appreciate about the design and performance of this travel iron. At first glance, you’ll notice that its handle is shaped a bit differently than many other models.

One function of this feature is that it makes the smaller iron easier to grip and control. Additionally, the handle can fold down flat so that it takes up even less space when you pack it in your luggage.

Although it seems to get the job done with roughly the same quality and efficiency as much larger irons, there’s one relatively minor setback associated with its compact size.

There’s less room for water to make the steam, so if you’ll be using it on a number of garments you’ll probably have to refill the reservoir.

With a 1000-watt output, it’s not as powerful as some other steam irons but there’s enough power to remove even the toughest wrinkles. It’s got an easy temperature control switch, allowing you to use it with any fabric.

As for its construction, users say the materials are substantial and the product feels sturdy. The only exception is the fold-flat handle.

While this is a great feature when it works, a few owners said that it broke after extensive use and required some creative thinking to keep using it for its intended purpose. This is a travel iron worth considering, but be sure to treat the handle with care.

2. Steamfast SF-717 Mini Steam Iron – Best Design

Steamfast SF-717 Mini Steam Iron

  • Heats up quickly
  • 2-year warranty
  • Low power output
  • Flimsy construction

As this option proves, a capable travel iron doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Weighing in at under a pound, this is one of the smallest and lightest products available in this diverse segment.

It comes with a travel bag that makes it even easier to tote around on any trip. Despite its small size, this iron comes with a 7.5-foot cord that will allow you to reach further than many other models.

Such versatility can come in handy when you’re staying in unfamiliar locations. Of course, the small, lightweight construction does have some inherent drawbacks. For starters, the plastic construction doesn’t feel as sturdy as some other irons on our list.

Additionally, it’s got a comparatively anemic 420-watt output and can only hold 1.4 ounces of water. Nevertheless, the water heats up quickly and it’s up to the task of removing wrinkles despite its apparent power deficit.

Take comfort in knowing that you can get a replacement if something goes wrong within the first years. It’s also easy to contact customer support if you have any questions or concerns.

Not only does this design save lots of space, but it’s comfortable to grip and a breeze to glide over whatever garments you need to iron while away from home. The convenience of two voltage settings means you’ll be able to plug it in virtually anywhere you travel around the world.

3. Beautural 1800-Watt Steam Iron – Best Features

Beautural 1800-Watt Steam Iron

  • LED display screen
  • Lots of power
  • 9 Preset Modes
  • Somewhat heavy
  • Small water reservoir opening

If you’re still not convinced that a travel iron can pack the same punch as a full-sized model, look no further than this compelling option. With 1800 watts of steam power, no wrinkled fabric stands a chance against its ceramic-coated plate.

It also has an adequate water reservoir, though some owners noted that the opening is a bit too small to confidently refill the chamber.

Once the water is ready to convert into steam, however, you’ll appreciate the nine settings that make it easy to determine which level you should be using for a particular garment.  There’s also an LED display screen that clearly shows all relevant information.

Its self-cleaning function makes cleanup simple before packing up to head home. Of course, all of these functions and features do come with a trade-off. This is one of the largest and heaviest irons on our list.

4. Kexi Steam Iron – Best Performance

Kexi Steam Iron

  • Two power speeds
  • High-quality construction
  • Unique design
  • High price tag
  • Prone to leaks

There are some distinct design cues that separate the various travel irons on our list, but none are as dramatic as this one. It looks like no other steam iron on the market and it’s sure to capture some attention from almost anyone who sees it.

That might not be the primary motivation for purchasing a travel iron, but the packaging is also functional and made of high quality materials. With dedicated settings for dry or wet ironing, you’ll be able to choose just the right setting for whatever job you need it to perform.

Despite its innovative shapes and features, however, some reviewers indicated that it’s easy for the water compartment to leak if it’s not filled precisely.

One of the most obvious drawbacks of this iron is its price. Tipping the scales at several times the cost of other options, you’ll have to really be drawn to its functionality and eye-catching design to feel that its premium price is justified.

Nevertheless, anyone who wants to be on the cutting edge even when ironing clothes should definitely give this product some consideration.

5. Utopia Steam Iron – Best Value

Utopia Home Steam Iron for Clothes

  • Lightweight design
  • Plenty of features
  • Unclear instructions
  • Limited return window

Maybe you don’t need all the latest features or an innovative design. If your only motivation is finding a capable product for a fair price, here’s a product that might fit the bill.

Not only does it come in as one of the least expensive options on our list, it also provides plenty of power and functionality. You’ll have 1,200 watts of output and there’s enough steam available to remove wrinkles from garments, sheets, curtains, or just about anything.

Another clever feature is the swivel cord that allows you to move the iron around in almost any direction without anything getting in the way.

Its design also allows for upright steaming so you won’t even have to take your clothes off the hanger to get rid of stubborn wrinkles. You might expect that a low price means cheap materials and inferior construction.

That’s definitely not the case with this product. It feels sturdy and all the components reliably perform the task at hand. There are a few possible shortcomings, such as an instruction booklet that some owners found difficult to fully understand.

Additionally, its warranty isn’t as robust as some of the costlier models on the market. If you’re on the lookout for a travel iron that provides a lot of bang for your buck, you might not need to look even further.

6. Hilife Handheld Garment Steamer – Best Steamer

Hilife Handheld Garment Steamer

  • Large capacity
  • Space-saving design
  • 9-foot power cord
  • No traditional iron capability
  • Low heat output

Maybe you want to keep things as simple as possible when tending to your garments while traveling. If you don’t need the precision of a travel iron, you might want to consider a garment steamer. In that case, this is an excellent contender.

It handles itself admirably by smoothing out wrinkles about as effectively as a traditional iron. It’s much simpler to spray some steam, and many travelers will appreciate this convenient option.

Furthermore, it comes with one of the longest cords available so you can easily extend it from the plug to wherever your garment is hanging.

There are a few things to think about when deciding if this product is right for you. It doesn’t have as much heat output as a typical iron, so you might have to make additional passes over stubborn wrinkles to get your clothes as smooth as possible.

Another thing that users noted is that it tends to spew out a considerable amount of water while producing the useful steam.

Although it’s not perfect, this is a cost-effective and simple-to-use product that likely provides all the functionality most people will need when on the road.

7. Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Iron – Best Feel

Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Iron

  • Dual voltage options
  • Ergonomic design
  • Convenient dial
  • Limited features

Whether you’re planning a vacation or heading out on a business trip, comfort is key. That concept is frequently applied to a hotel suite or your rental car choices, but it can also be found in the right travel iron.

This one offers an excellent design that makes it very easy to grip. You can also comfortably change the setting with a conveniently placed dial. While this iron feels great in your hand, there’s a possibility that it won’t perform to the same high standards of some other options on the list.

It doesn’t have as many customizable options as other irons and the amount of steam power in its reserves is somewhat less than at least a few of its top competitors.

Nevertheless, this is one product that can be purchased for a reasonable price and will allow you to be comfortable while ironing your clothes wherever you go.

Finding the Best Travel Iron for You

Tomasz Majchrowicz/Shutterstock

Regardless of what you need from your travel iron, a few features are important in almost all cases. Here are a few factors to check before deciding on the right product.

Whether you’re looking for simplicity or the most high-tech functions available, any travel iron must be designed in a way that makes it easy to use.

Each of the top picks on our list has proven that its design makes sense for the purpose it was created to serve.

Instead of settling for the lowest price you can find, it’s important to consider the value proposition for any of the travel irons available for purchase.

An important factor to consider is how often you’ll likely be using the product. Buying an inexpensive iron made of substandard materials will end up being more expensive than a well-constructed alternative if you have to end up replacing it prematurely.

While it’s true that you don’t need the highest steam output to get the wrinkles out of your clothes, that doesn’t mean you should settle for an underpowered option.

Instead, check the reviews and find a competent iron that will perform well while you’re away from home.

It doesn’t have to be as robust as the model you leave behind, but if it doesn’t reliably smooth out your garments, there’s no need to bring that iron in the first place.

Whether you plan to travel internationally and need a versatile plug or you’d like a digital display for all the information, there’s sure to be a travel steam iron with everything on your wish list.

It’s easy to dismiss the importance of special features when you’re shopping around for travel supplies, but there’s no good reason to settle for less than the best with so many excellent options currently available for purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Galina-Photo/Shutterstock

What should you look for in a travel iron?

At its root, any iron should consistently and reliably remove wrinkles on demand. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, but it’s clear that some products are more adept than others.

Before considering other characteristics such as size and portability, be sure that whatever you pick is capable of handling its core function.

What’s the difference between a travel iron and a traditional iron?

The short answer is that a travel iron should be smaller and easier to pack in your luggage than a more bulky iron like the one you use at home.

Of course, simply settling for the lightest and most compact option available won’t necessarily result in the type of performance you need.

Fortunately, many of the travel irons on the market will get out tough wrinkles without hesitation despite taking up considerably less space.

How much power do you need?

As the options on this list reveal, there is a wide range of output available among travel irons. Although it might be tempting to go for the one with the highest amount of wattage, that’s not always necessary.

If you’ll be wearing garments that don’t typically get very wrinkled, you might have just as much success with an iron that has 1,000 watts of power or less.

How should you pack your travel iron?

Some options come with bags or other specialized containers meant to allow safe and secure transport. If your iron doesn’t have such accessories, it should still be relatively easy to pack one away in a suitcase.

Just remember to ensure that its water chamber is completely dry and find a cushioned area of your luggage to reduce the possibility of damaging any of its components.

What is a reasonable price?

The range of prices for these products is fairly wide with some inexpensive models going for about $20 and high-end options that cost well over $100.

In the end, factors like performance, design, and even name brands can impact the price, so it’s up to the individual to determine how much those details are worth to them.

We’d all rather look well-groomed while traveling. However, any traveler is familiar with the headache of opening your suitcase only to find all your clothes limp and wrinkled.

The most convenient tool for addressing this problem is the travel iron. This handy tool is specially designed to fit in your suitcase and is powerful enough to keep you looking tidy. Choosing the best travel iron can be intimidating, but we will guide you through the whole process.

It’s important to know what to look for when you are setting out to buy a travel iron. Perhaps your foremost consideration will be the size and weight of the iron in order to maximize your luggage storage space.

But there are several other factors to keep in mind, including the iron’s power and heat control. Let’s dig a little deeper into these aspects.

Weight and Size

Travel iron weight and size

One of the biggest advantages travel irons have over regular ones is their weight. Made to be easily portable in your luggage, they weigh significantly less than regular irons. Look for an iron that weighs approximately 1 pound .

As for size, a travel iron is built to fit perfectly into your suitcase or travel bag. This convenient tool’s dimensions typically vary from 6 to 8 inches in length.

Ease of Use

Travel iron ease of use

When it comes to a travel iron’s ease of use, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. First, take a good look at the handle and see if it looks comfortable . A functional handle will go a long way in making your iron usable. Second, the best travel irons include motion-sensitive technology, helping you iron faster and with greater precision.

On top of that, there are some really interesting additional features you can look out for, like anti-drip or water-spraying features, both of which contribute to overall ease of use when it comes to ironing.

Heat Control

Travel iron heat control

If you’re looking at an iron without the option to control the heat level, think again. Any travel iron on your shortlist should have this ability. You don’t want to iron synthetic clothes with the same level of heat as cotton clothes.

Hot Tip: Look for an iron that has printed indicators on the swivel that denote exactly what each level is for.

If you are traveling to a different country, look for an iron with dual voltage . You will likely be dealing with different voltages, which can render your travel iron useless.

If you plug your iron into a higher voltage source, you run the risk of frying it.

Similarly, power is an important consideration when choosing a travel iron. Simply speaking, more powerful irons are made for heavier clothes or fabrics that are hard to iron. So, choose wisely, and if you plan on straightening heavier clothes like hoodies or jeans, find a 1,000-watt iron that can handle the job .

On the other hand, lighter clothes like t-shirts and shorts will not require a powerful iron.

Portability

Travel iron portability

Weigh the portability of your travel iron against its power output. You don’t want to have to make room for a huge iron in your suitcase at the expense of something else.

Most travel irons are specially designed to ensure maximum portability, but it’s still something to consider.

Now that we’ve discussed exactly what to look for in a travel iron let’s take a look at some of the best ones available. We’ve compiled a list of the best options that are versatile and will satisfy all of your expectations for a travel iron.

Imagine you just finished a long day of travel. You sprawl out on the bed of your accommodation exhausted.

The next morning, you pull out your clothing and see that no amount of flattening with your hands is going to take out the wrinkles in that dress or shirt!

Whether you are off to an important client meeting or just going sight-seeing in a new city, you realize there is no way you can leave looking this way. But then, to your frustration, you see that there is no travel iron available in your room. At least one that works well!!

Hotel room closet

At home or on the road, we still want to look put together and not like we are living out of a suitcase (even if we are!) which is why bringing along a small travel iron or even a travel steamer with you when on the go is really worth it.

Instead of being caught with a wrinkled outfit and wondering where to buy a travel iron in the moment, I’ve

put together this guide so that you can quickly see the best travel irons on the market today and choose the one that is best for you, your fashion, and your travel style.

My Pick & The Best Travel Iron: Rowenta Travel Iron

N/A

The Rowenta Travel Steam Iron is my absolute favorite travel size iron. It is both a steamer and an iron and being dual voltage, it is easy to travel abroad with. Weighing in at just a little over 1 pound and with a handle that folds down, it is actually quite easy to toss in your luggage and bring along.

My New Hack & The Best Solution for Minor Travel Ironing: Wrinkle Release Spray

N/A

While having a portable travel iron on hand is great if you have particularly easy to wrinkle clothes, it actually isn’t impossible to have wrinkle free travel outfits without an iron.

When I don’t want to bring along a small iron for travelling, due to luggage space or weight, I absolutely love using a wrinkle release spray .

You just simply spray all over the minor wrinkles and flatten out or hang the clothing. Before long, the wrinkles will disappear, just as if you had ironed them! It works best on cotton and natural materials (except linen, that’s a tough one).

The Best Travel Irons 2024 Comparison Table

Check out the table below for a quick and easy comparison of the different small travel iron options in this guide. For further information about each travel iron, keep reading the reviews below.

What To Consider When Choosing the Best Travel Irons

Size and weight.

When looking for the best travel irons, the size and weight of what you pack can be a big concern, which is why choosing a compact travel iron is really important. But, a small travel iron doesn’t need to mean that it doesn’t work as well as a full sized one! While yes, it may take a bit more time to iron simply due to the size of the area that the iron can cover, you can still find quality travel irons that due to the job, like the Sunbeam GCSBTR 100 travel iron.

Steam vs Iron… or Both?

One of the things you will want to consider is if you actually want a travel steamer for clothes or just a small electric travel iron. So what’s the difference?

An iron is great for pressing. This definitely can get out wrinkles, but also will require an ironing board (or similar surface for best results, like this ironing mat ) and actually does have a small learning curve. Ironing can also take a bit longer, especially when using a small, compact iron.

However, you can actually find a travel steam iron, which uses steam to help iron out the wrinkles. It still uses the hotplate but some come with actual steamer features or just uses steam through the holes to help get those harder wrinkles out. You’ll see these typically as “dry irons” or “steam irons” (steam irons being ones that use the function of a small amount of added water to have a steam effect).

There are also actual travel clothes steamers. A stand alone clothes steamer is not going to use a hotplate, but instead purely the use of high powered steam to release the wrinkles from your clothing, typically while they are hanging up. This method doesn’t require as much time or even “skill” and also doesn’t require additional gear. However, some could argue that steaming doesn’t work AS well as an iron and definitely won’t press anything.

Using a travel steamer on a T-shirt

So, which one is best? A Travel Steamer or a Travel Iron

This really depends on what type of clothing you typically wear and how much time you are willing to put into making your clothes look polished and sharp. A steamer is great if you are traveling for leisure and just need the packing wrinkles to get released. An actual steam travel iron (one that uses both steam and the hotplates) is a good option if traveling for work and need presses and pleats.

Higher wattage doesn’t necessarily always equate to better. However, this is still something to look into when considering what iron to purchase.

If you are buying a steamer, then low wattage could mean longer wait times for it to heat up as well as fewer steam strokes, needing extra heating time during the steaming.

Dual Voltage

If you are a frequent and world-wide traveler, you’ll want to make sure that you have a dual voltage travel iron. Just make sure you have the right power converter for your plug and you are good to go. However, not all travel irons are dual voltage! Make sure yours is before doing any international travel.

Heating Time

As stated above, wattage can influence how long it takes for an iron to get hot enough to use. But other internal features can also effect how long it takes. When on the road, you don’t want to be delayed with your plans because your iron wasn’t heating effectively.

Automatic Shut Off Timer

The last thing you want to be worrying about when traveling is being gone from the hotel room most of the day and fretting over if you unplugged your iron! Having an Auto-Off feature is a great peace of mind to have, especially in a travel iron.

Have you ever ironed over something only to lift the iron and find even tinier, hard pressed wrinkles!? This is most likely due to a poor shape design. Look for an iron that is well rounded and only has a sharp edge at the top tip.

travel iron on a beach

It’s not an uncommon theme in mini travel items to seem to lose their function quickly. It must be something with travel sized mechanisms, but regardless, it’s infuriating to buy a product that works great for several months or usages only to die out within a year.

Check to see if the travel iron has a warranty and if so, make sure you save your documentation so that if you need a replacement, it is not too big of a hassle.

The Spruce / Leticia Almeida

Having a travel steamer on hand means you'll be able to freshen up your clothes in minutes, whether you're comfortably at home or on a trip, with blouses, linen pants, and more packed tightly into your suitcase. We've tested more than 40 clothes steamers in The Lab and in our own homes, measuring each steamer's heat time, considering its water tank capacity, and noting its effectiveness against deep-set wrinkles on linen, cotton, and silk.

After all our testing, we can say: don't let a travel steamer's compact size fool you. These units are light enough to pack into a carry-on or duffel bag, or store in your bathroom vanity , yet they deliver powerful steam. You may need a funnel in order to fill up their water tank without making a mess—but, they'll eradicate all wrinkles from your clothes in just a few up-and-down motions and give you an average of 10 minutes of steaming time, which is plenty ahead of a day at work or night out.

Whether you're looking for crease-creating attachments or pocket-size devices, the models below are the best options to reach for when you're in a pinch—or should we say wrinkle ?

Editor's Note: This review was updated in May 2024 with new buying considerations and testing insights for our three favorite travel steamers.

Best Overall

Brookline steamer.

Pink or black design

Wide-mouthed reservoir for easy and clean filling

Good water tank capacity

One steam setting

Performs better when tank is more than halfway full

The ideal travel steamer should be lightweight, as small as possible, and able to decrease wrinkles in a matter of minutes. We saw in our testing that the Brookline Handheld Garment Steamer hits all of the above notes, and has a few extra conveniences that set it apart from the pack.

It comes in black or pink—so, depending on your choice, it would be easy to spot in your bag (pink) or subtle enough to blend in (black), if that's your priority. The reservoir is also easy to fill thanks to the wide mouth, so even if you're dealing with the limitations of a hotel sink, you'll be good to go without a funnel. The 6.1-ounce capacity is in the middle of our picks, too, which range from roughly 4 to 10 ounces.

The Spruce / Henry Wortock

It takes about two and a half minutes to heat up; this was a bit longer than our typical experience, but is still within reason in our eyes. There's one steam setting, and depending on your materials (and the severity of their wrinkles), you may need to fill up the container in between garments. This steamer does perform better when the tank is more than half full, so you'll really want to stay on top of the water level either way.

Weight:  1.57 pounds |  Water Tank Capacity:  6.1 ounces |  Heat Time:  2.5 minutes |  Steam Time:  10 minutes |  Power Level:  800 watts

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Electrolux garment steamer.

12-foot power cord

Heats up instantly

Trigger lock for continuous steam

Smaller mouth on water reservoir

Not as compact as other picks

We've raved about the Electrolux Garment Steamer before, giving it the top spot among clothes steamers of all shapes and sizes. We definitely recommend it as a travel steamer, too. It's relatively compact and heats up fairly instantly, and the handle has a trigger lock so you can have continuous steam without having to keep a finger on the button. This especially came in handy when we used it to steam a pair of jeans during our testing. Denim is a tall order for any steamer, and while it took multiple passes, it made a noticeable improvement.

Although, we do have a few caveats with this steamer, since it isn't quite as small as some of our other picks. It's perhaps the sort of steamer you could comfortably tuck in a suitcase, as opposed to squeeze into a carry-on. The water tank is 10 ounces large (our other picks are 4 and 6 ounces), and the 12-foot cord doesn't retract, so you'll need to wind it and make room for that in your bag, too.

The Spruce Home / Henry Wortock

Lastly, the smaller mouth on the water reservoir is easier to fill when you use a funnel—which could be hard to come by in a hotel room if you don't think ahead and pack one. Still, we'd call this a good steamer to have on hand. You'll be able to bring it with you when you travel, but will also want to unpack it so you can use it full-time at home, too.

Weight:  1.99 pounds |  Water Tank Capacity:  10 ounces |  Heat Time:  Immediate |  Steam Time:  18 minutes |  Power Level:  1500 watts

We Also Love

True & tidy handheld garment steamer.

Brush attachment included

Large, stainless steel soleplate

See-through water tank

Tricky to fill water reservoir

The True & Tidy Handheld Garment Steamer is a colorful unit that breaks down into two pieces, making it super easy to stash in a bag of any size. We loved that its water reservoir is completely see-through, which allowed us to monitor exactly how much water was left. And it excelled in our testing, removing tough wrinkles with just a few passes, thanks to its powerful steam and stainless steel soleplate.

This travel steamer comes with a brush attachment that can help smooth fabric as you work, and it was ready to use in around two minutes. The handle stayed cool and comfortable for the duration of our testing, and the on-off rocker switch made the steamer simple and straightforward to operate.

The Spruce / Camryn Rabideau

Our only woe when it comes to this travel steamer is that the water tank is a bit tricky to fill. You have to pour water in slowly. Otherwise, it backs up and overflows. However, beyond that one quirk, the product exceeded our expectations and is still one worth adding to your home (and suitcase!).

Weight: 1.43 pounds | Water Tank Capacity:  4.6 ounces | Heat Time:  80 seconds | Steam Time:  10 minutes | Power Level: 600 watts

Final Verdict

The best travel steamer is the Brookline Handheld Garment Steamer : a compact yet powerful option that's lightweight, easy to use, and a cinch to fill thanks to the wide reservoir mouth. We also love the Electrolux Garment Steamer that heats up almost instantly and has a trigger lock that'll allow you to steam continuously, without having to press a button at the same time.

How We Tested the Travel Steamers

We've tested more than 40 clothes and travel steamers in The Lab and at home. Our tests can vary, but always include assessments of the following categories.

  • Setup: To start, we unbox and set up each steamer, noting how clear the instructions are and how intuitive the design of the steamer is. We take note of the placement of buttons and how long the cord is, and jot down anything that makes the steamer particularly comfortable, or cumbersome, to use.
  • Heat Time: We evaluate the heat time of each steamer by timing with a phone stopwatch how long the steamer takes to heat up. We also note if there are any indicators that the steamer is ready or not.
  • Effectiveness: We then use household garments, like linen pants, cotton shirts, linen napkins, and silk tops to test the effectiveness of each steamer and try out all the settings. We also use any attachments in the box, and note how effective they are at releasing wrinkles and making desired creases.
  • Portability : We rate the portability of the product, noting how easy it is to hold or carry. In some tests, we put the travel steamer in a packed carry-on bag to see if it would be practical in your suitcase and if it drastically alters the weight of the bag.
  • Overall Value: Lastly, we use our hands-on experience to rate the overall value of the product, and decide if it's worth the money you'd spend on it.

What to Look for in a Travel Steamer

The heat and steam time.

When comparing different steamers, you'll want to look at their heat and steam times. The former indicates how long the unit takes to heat up and be ready for use, while the latter indicates how long the steamer runs when the tank is full. The longer the steam time, and the larger the water reservoir capacity, the more garments you can often de-wrinkle in one steaming session, without having to run to the sink to refill the tank.

"I like [a steamer] that has a decent amount of continuous run time—10 minutes, at least—so that you don't have to stop and refill several times," notes Melissa Maker of Clean My Space. While portable or travel steamers sometimes sacrifice a longer steam time for their small size (and thus, smaller water tank), all of the models in our roundup have steam times of 10 minutes or more.

The Electrolux Garment Steamer 's steam time clocks in at 18 minutes, and this steamer heats up almost instantly, too, meaning you can de-wrinkle your clothes sooner rather than later.

How Portable (and Packable) It Is

A steamer's size not only impacts its steam time, but it also determines how packable it is in your suitcase. If you're going to be packing a steamer in your suitcase, it should ideally be compact and lightweight—otherwise, it will prevent you from packing other necessities.

The unit's weight will also impact its usability and how packable it is, since you likely don't want to add to much weight to your suitcase or carry-on bag. "A steamer should be a manageable weight, comfortable to hold, and nicely balanced, so it's not too top or bottom-heavy," says Maker.

All of our selections weigh less than 2 pounds apiece, and the True & Tidy TS-10 Handheld Garment Steamer can even be separated into two pieces for easier storage in your suitcase or at home.

To produce steam, travel steamers need to generate water temperatures of more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit. That means you need to use any clothes steamer with care , to avoid accidental burns and spills. For use with heavier fabrics, temperatures can reach as high as 395 degrees Fahrenheit on many standard clothes steamers, but the less-powerful travel varieties don't often reach these temperatures.

While they may seem similar, steamers and steam irons serve different purposes in the laundry room.

Steamers use hot steam to relax fibers within a fabric, while irons are used to press and smooth fabric and create creases. Further, steamers are typically used vertically on hanging garments, while irons require a horizontal surface, such as an ironing board .

How to better use my product

What type of ironing board should i use.

Choose a board that is height-adjustable to adjust it to your height. It should be steady and robust so that you can place the ironing appliance on it. The board should be perforated to allow the steam to pass through the fibres of the fabric to soften it and make ironing easier. The ironing board cover should also be suitable to allow the flow of steam through.

The soleplate of my iron is giving off a yellowish colour that is staining my clothes.

There could be several reasons for this: • You are not using the right type of water (Refer to the FAQ "What water should I use for ironing?"). • You have used a starch type product on your laundry (Always spray to the reverse side of the fabric to be ironed and clean your iron afterwards). • Fibers from clothes have been trapped in the holes in the iron and have become carbonised. • The clothes have not been rinsed enough and there is detergent left on them or you have ironed a new item of clothing before washing it. • See the instructions for use to find out what type of water is appropriate and clean the soleplate from time to time with a damp sponge.

What is the right temperature for my clothes?

It is essential to select the right ironing temperature. Your iron has a built-in thermostat controlling the temperature very precisely over the entire surface of the soleplate. The thermostat dial contains international markers with dots corresponding to three ironing temperatures. Make sure that you use the right temperature for your clothes: • Marker with 1 dot for synthetic fabrics. • Marker with 2 dots for wool and silk. • Marker with 3 dots for cotton and linen.

How do I prevent water drips on my fabrics?

• Don't use the Boost steam button intensively. Wait few seconds between each use. • The temperature button must be placed on Steam area (between 2 dots and MAX). • Use steam only when the iron is hot (the light must be off).

What is the vertical steam function used for? How do I use it?

This function allows you to iron fabrics in situ or on a hanger. To do this, set the iron temperature button to the maximum position. • Leave the item on a hanger and gently pull the fabric with one hand. • Press the steam control button intermittently and move the iron from top to bottom. As the steam produced is very hot, it softens the fibres and removes creases. Note: Never use the vertical steam function on an item being worn by anyone.

Can I use my steam iron for Dry Ironing?

Yes and you do not need to fill the tank with water. Set the variable steam control to Dry and set the temperature to suit the type of material (care points •, ••, •••). At the end of your ironing session, we would suggest that once your iron has cooled down, you should wipe over the soleplate and around the steam holes to remove any burned fibers that may have started collecting around the steam holes.

What should I do if my iron has not been used for a long time?

If it has not been used for a long time (for example several weeks), use it over the sink for a few minutes to remove any residue that could stain your laundry.

Can I fill the iron with water when it is plugged in?

No, you must always unplug the iron before filling it.

How can I avoid scratching the soleplate of my iron?

To avoid damaging the soleplate, follow this advice: • Always place your iron on its heel rest or its base (depending on model). • Avoid ironing over abrasive items (buttons, zip fastenings, etc.). • Never clean your iron's soleplate with abrasive or metallic pads.

How can I avoid shiny marks on fabric?

Shiny marks can appear on some fabrics, especially on dark coloured fabrics. We would advise ironing dark clothes inside out and using the correct temperature. If ironing mixed-fibre fabrics, set the temperature for the most fragile fibre. Important: The iron takes longer to cool down than to heat up. We recommend that you start with fabrics to be ironed at a low temperature.

Can I put my iron away right after ironing?

Maintenance and cleaning, how do i prevent the steam holes of my iron from clogging up.

Firstly, fill the iron tank to MAX with water. Set the thermostat control to Max and the steam control on DRY and switch on. Place the iron on its heel and leave to heat up for around 5 minutes. Unplug the iron then hold your iron horizontally above the sink. Remove the anti-scale valve (or set the control to self-clean/autoclean depending on the model). Steam, water and scale deposits will leave the steam chamber through the steam holes and the iron will be clean. At the end of the operation, push the anti-calc valve back into position. When your iron is cold, you will also be able to use your vacuum to gently suction limescale and dirt that may have clogged the holes in the soleplate.

What should I do to maintain my iron correctly?

Four good tips: After use, empty the tank, close the steam control, set the thermostat to minimum and stand the iron upright or place it on the base (depending on model). Cleaning: Use a damp soft cloth to wipe your iron and never use cleaners or solvents. If your iron has an auto-clean function, refer to the instruction manual before using it. Tips: • Always use untreated water in your iron. If your water is very hard, we recommend you use a mix of 50% untreated tap water and 50% distilled water. • Avoid placing your iron on sharp objects such as zip fasteners and metal buttons. • Do not put your iron down flat on rough surfaces.

What are the safety rules for iron use?

You must take precautions so that using your iron is risk-free. • Above all, never leave a hot iron unattended. This is not only to avoid overheating of the iron or the surface on which it is placed but also to ensure that no-one gets burned. If safety is one of your main concerns, choose an iron that has an automatic cut-off function. Never leave a hot iron within reach of children or pets who risk knocking it over and injuring themselves. • Like any electrical appliance, never put your iron in water. • Do not use an iron that has fallen down or has a damaged power cord. If you have the slightest doubt concerning the condition of your iron, contact the Service Centre. • Always unplug your iron before leaving it, cleaning it or filling it with water (unless it is a model that has a removable water tank). Regularly check the water level to ensure that there is always enough.

How do I descale my steam iron?

Never use any descaling agent or vinegar when rinsing the boiler: they could damage it. • Self-cleaning: heat the iron, unplug it, remove the anti-calc valve and spray the iron over the sink. • Cleaning the anti-calc valve: Remove the antiscale valve and soak the valve in a cup of white vinegar or plain lemon juice for 4 hours.

How do I clean the anti-calc valve on my iron?

I want to remove the water from the tank but there is still a little left..

It is not designed for the water to be removed completely. It is okay to use or store the iron even with a small amount of water remaining. When storing, please remove as much water as possible and store in an upright position.

How do I clean the soleplate?

• The Durillium soleplate : Regularly clean the soleplate with a damp, non metallic washing up pad. For easier, non-corrosive cleaning of your iron's soleplate, use a damp sponge on the soleplate while it is still warm. If cleaning dirt off is an issue, use the stick which is made specifically for cleaning the Durillium soleplates. • The stainless soleplate : Clean the soleplate of your iron when it is cool with a damp cloth or a non-abrasive sponge. • The autoclean soleplate : It is recommended that you use a soft damp cloth on the warm soleplate, in order not to damage the surface. Warning: The use of iron cleaner will cause damage to your soleplate's autoclean coating.

Technical support

My iron is not heating up..

3 possible causes: • There is no power in the mains socket: check that the plug is properly connected, or try to plug the iron into a different socket. • Temperature control set too low: set the temperature control to a higher temperature. • The automatic electronic cut-out* is active: move your iron. * depending on model

Why is my iron leaking from the soleplate when I fill it?

Always set your iron to the 'No Steam' function before you start to fill.

Why isn't my iron steaming when set on the one dot setting (depending on model)?

Some irons (depending on model) can produce steam when set on the One dot setting. However, the majority of our irons will only produce steam when set on the 2 dot or 3 dot setting. When you look on your iron's thermostat dial you will notice that the 2 dot and 3 dot settings have a shaded background, this indicates that the iron will produce steam when the dial is set inside this shaded area.

Why does steam not come out from all of the steam holes?

Not all of the steam holes release steam, the smaller holes on the soleplate that look like they might be steam holes are actually designed to assist soleplate glide ability.

Why isn't the spray function on my iron working?

There is not enough water in the tank. Fill it up with the quantity indicated in the instructions for use and push spray button several times to fill the system complete.

The indicator light keeps going on and off.

All irons contain a thermostat light. It is normal for the thermostat to turn on and off. It indicates the thermostat is working and your soleplate is being maintained at the desired temperature. If the auto-off light blinks, you must disengage the auto-off function. This is done by gently shaking the iron which will allow the iron to reheat.

Why did my iron smoke on first use?

When heating your iron for the first time, you may notice a small amount of odour and smoke, this is simply the engineering residues from the manufacturing process burning off. These are harmless and will quickly disappear.

Some waterdrops drip out onto the floor during ironing.

It is normal. Your iron generates a lot of steam; this steam is condensing on the board. Some waterdrops could appeared underneath the ironing board and fall on the flooring.

Water flows from the soleplate when the iron is stored or when it is cooling off.

Your iron has been stored horizontally, without draining the water tank and with the selector placed on steam position. When you store your iron horizontally, check that the tank is empty and the selector on "DRY" position.

My iron is producing no or little steam.

Check the following points: • The tank is empty or almost empty: add more water. • The selected temperature is too low and does not allow steam to be produced: set the thermostat to the steam zone (between 2 dots and MAX). • If your iron has a Dry/Steam control: set it to the Steam position. • Scale has built up in your iron: descale it. • Your iron has an intelligent system (a moving sensor) which temporarily stops steam being released when the iron is not moving, even when it is placed horizontally. This function eliminates wasted steam while you are handling the clothes.

The “supersteam” or "turbo" function is not working. What should I do?

Please check the following points: • The tank is empty or almost empty: add more water. • The selected temperature is too low to use this function: set the thermostat to the zone between 3 dots and MAX. The "supersteam" or "turbo" function should not be used intensively – wait a few seconds between pressing the button.

Why does my iron release steam once the tank is filled?

You are filling the tank with the "Dry/Steam" control set to Steam – it needs to be in the "Dry" position. Or, you have over-filled your iron – do not go beyond the "MAX" level on the tank.

The auto stop function has been activated (depending on model).

The iron doesn't glide very easily..

Some laundry starches and synthetic fibres may stick to the surface of the iron. Please clean the Iron's surface.

White powder or grit is coming out of the steam outlet.

This is probably crystallized calcium chlorohypochlorite. Carry out the self-cleaning instructions in the instruction manual two or three times. If that hasn't resolved the problem, it may be that your iron needs repair. Please contact the service centre.

A short time after use, I can hear a metallic sound.

The internal parts may make metallic noises with the change in temperature. There is nothing wrong with it.

What should I do if my appliance is not working?

After following the instructions in the user manual for starting the appliance, make sure that your electrical socket is working by plugging another appliance. If it still does not work, do not try to dismantle or repair the appliance yourself, instead, take it to an approved repair centre

What should I do if the power cable or the cord guard of my appliance is damaged?

Do not use your appliance. To avoid any danger, have it replaced by an approved repair centre.

Various topics

How do i prevent brown spots from the iron appearing on the clothing.

This may be due to the use of chemical descaling agents or additives in the water for ironing. Never use this type of product in the water tank (see our recommendations regarding water to be used). Some residues could also been present in the steam chamber or on the soleplate; use the self cleaning function (Depending model). All linen, especially new garments, must be washed and rinsed thoroughly to remove any soap and chemical deposits before you iron them. If these are not removed by washing they may appear later out of the soleplate in the form of small brown or white spots or streaks on your linen.

The soleplate is sticking to my garments.

Use the right temperatures on the thermostat for the right fabrics. A reason for sticking may be the use of starch. If you want to use starch, simply spray it on the reverse side of the garment, so that there is no contact between the soleplate and the starch. Clean the soleplate from rubber prints of fabric. (Which always must be ironed on reverse side of the rubber prints.)

What is the anti-calc collector (depending on model)?

The anti-calc collector is a scale collector which automatically collects the scale which forms inside your iron. The amount of scale collected depends on the hardness of your water.

How does the auto stop function work (depending on model)?

What is the function of the autoclean catalys soleplate (according to model).

This system prevents the soleplate from clogging. Its active coating eliminates fibres and impurities that often become stuck to the plate and end up reducing its glide.

What is the advantage of high wattage?

The higher the wattage, the faster the iron will reach the desired temperature.

Where can I dispose of my appliance at the end of its life span?

Your appliance contains valuable materials which can be recovered or recycled. Leave it at a local civic waste collection point.

I've just opened my new appliance and I think there is a part missing. What should I do?

If you believe that one part is missing, please call Consumer Services Center and we will help you find a suitable solution.

Where can I buy accessories, consumables or spare parts for my appliance?

Please go to the “ Accessories ” section of the website to easily find whatever you need for your product.

What are the warranty conditions of my appliance?

Find more detailed information in the Warranty section of the website.

Best Small Steam Iron for Travel 2023

best-mini-travel-iron

Whether you travel by train, plane or automobile, wrinkled clothes are an inevitable part of the journey. Regardless if you’re traveling for work or pleasure, unpacking your luggage will reveal clothes that don’t look like they should. The solution is much simpler (and cheaper) than you think.

A mini travel iron takes up less space than your average shoe and will add little more than a pound of weight to your luggage. They are also dual voltage, which makes it perfect for European vacations.

Our absolute winner is the Oliso M2 Mini

They also work perfectly for students who need a quick way to look sharp before class. We’ve reviewed the top performers for you to choose from…

Travel Iron Review – Buyers Guide

Highest power output.

Both Oliso and Rowenta have 100 watts of power. This is compared to a full-sized iron which is usually around 1700 watts. So expect it to be a little slower to warm up, but given their small size, they still pack a punch and iron really well. If you need something bigger, check out our best steam irons for clothing article instead.

Most Compact Mini Iron

Small, lightweight mini irons mean you can always take this convenient appliance with you, even for short overnight stays. Steaming ironing clothes is so quick and effortless with an appliance only just bigger than your hand. They also help you to get more than a day’s wear our of some clothing. A quick steam will freshen up garments and even removes faint odors.

The Steamfast mini travel currently holds the title of world’s smallest iron, and after checking the facts, we can confirm this claim.

Not only is it tiny, but it’s also as light as a few feathers, 1 pound to be exact. It’s so teeny tiny yet delivers impressively in both heating speed and steaming capability. It is super comfortable to operate making it the winner not only in this review but as a favorite choice on Amazon too.

All the travel irons listed above can be packed in your carry on luggage too. The TSA Rules confirm that as long as you don’t attempt to use in during the flight, you have their approval.

Best Cheap Steam Iron Choice

The Sunbeam is a near-impossible price to beat. If budget is a factor in picking out your travel iron, then this option will be the lightest on your pocket.

Dual Voltage Performers

All of the above reviewed mini travel irons are dual voltage so book that overseas holiday. Yay! Only the Cordless Panasonic does not qualify in this category.

Globe trotters need an iron that can switch between the lower 100 and higher 240 volts. Depending on the rated voltage of the country you are visiting, you can simply adjust your steam iron to the correct setting and then straighten out clothing that needs a little attention.

If you use your steam iron when there is a higher power input, it may fail to work or worse, cause damage to the iron. Heating appliances like irons without a dual-voltage setting would require a voltage adaptor or convertor.

Safest Iron with Auto Shut-off

None of the mini travel irons above have a safety shut off so it’s essential to remember to switch them off when they are done. They all power on then connected to a power source, so no on/off switches either.

Only the cordless Panasonic has an auto shut-off safety feature, the iron switches off after 10 minutes of inactivity. We generally expect this feature on a high-end product such as this. As the iron only powers up when on its charging plate, if it falls off its base or is left standing on its heel, it will automatically cool down.

Largest Water Capacity

This is only really a factor if you plan to use your iron for more than just a travel ironing. For a shirt or two, the small water capacity of any of the above irons will suffice, but… what if you want more?

The amount of steam you use will ultimately determine how many times you need to refill your water reservoir. This in itself is as easy as popping open a water cap but if you have more ironing to get through, this can be a time-wasting nuisance.

Unbeatable Warranty

Cheap and low-quality irons have a reputation of only lasting a short period of time, but this should not be that case with any of the above travel irons. Should your iron fail, despite proper use and care, the manufacturers should back their products with support, repairs, and replacements.

Variable Heat and Steam Settings

Heat settings need to be adjustable to ensure different fabrics are treated with the correct temperature. The steam output should also be controlled and a steam burst feature is a great addition as it allows you to tackle tougher wrinkles with less effort.

An iron that offers both steam ironing and dry ironing offers more versatility if you plan to use it for home crafting too.

Ergonomic Design

Travel steam irons are conventionally small for easy portability, but this should not make them difficult to use. You should be able to grip the handle comfortably, fill the water tank without difficulty and adjust setting effortlessly.

Need an Iron for Sewing or Quilting?

Small travel sized irons are excellent to include in your sewing tool kit. Sometimes, a large iron can be cumbersome and heavy, especially on repetitive jobs like patchwork. The fact that most travel irons do not have an auto-shutoff, also means your iron is always hot.

The small soleplate also allows detailed precision without the chance of burning your fingers when it comes to flattening seams.

Small Irons for Home Use and Laundry

If you’re a bachelor or bachelorette, then a compact iron may be all you need. Although not what it’s been designed for, a travel iron can be used at home too. Because the soleplate is small, it goes not cover a very large surface area so cloth ironing will take longer compared to a traditional iron.

But if you’re one of those people who only iron the occasional shirt or dress when going out, then it’s a good match for you. It doesn’t take up much space, an 8 foot power cord is long enough to give you good reach, and it heats up really fast. (Sometimes faster than a traditional iron as they have a larger surface to heat.)

Word of warning: Travel irons do not have a safety-off switch, so be sure to switch it off to avoid scorches, burns or worse.

Having a travel iron in your luggage completes the experience of traveling across the planet and looking the part when you finally arrive. After you’ve used it once or twice, and saved a small fortune on the hotel’s ironing service, you won’t leave home without it.

It’s a game-changer for sure. You’ll sooner leave home without your toothbrush before leaving your steamy friend behind. Okay, maybe not everyone gets as excited about ironing as we do, but you’ve got to love the cool convenience of a tiny appliance that helps perfect the ultimate holiday photos.

Travel Iron Comparison Table

Travel iron buying guide.

This guide will provide you with a better idea about what features you might want to include when buying a travel iron. Use the factors listed below to help you select the best travel iron for your needs.

Famous brand names sometimes have an inflated price tag to go with it. Be sure to check out some of the less familiar brands which are emerging as solidly reliable travel iron manufactures.

Everyone is travelling on a different budget. The reason why people on the move need a travel iron is to avoid the very expensive laundry fees charged by hotels. So, work out what price you feel comfortable with, and don’t be tempted into overspending on a more expensive model.

Feedback from previous buyers is an essential part of making a buying decision. Look out for common problems people have with certain models.

Performance is always linked to wattage. Even though a travel iron must be lightweight and compact, it must still offer enough watts of power to do the job it’s meant to do properly. Look for wattages higher than 1100 if you want easy ironing.

Temperatures & Settings

The more setting choices your travel iron offers, the more fabrics varieties you will be able to press. If you like to pack silks, cotton, and linen clothing, you will know these materials always need to be ironed when they come out of the suitcase. Each of these fabrics requires a different temperature setting.

Water Capacity

Steam irons need water to flatten all the creases caused by your clothes being folded up for so long. This is the most effective way of removing creases in the shortest amount of time. If you want your clothes to look effortlessly smooth and cared for, consider buying a travel iron that can steam and press.

Weight & Dimensions

There’s nothing worse than finding a must-have souvenir on your travels, and then having to leave it behind because you have no space in your luggage or you are overweight. Make sure your travel iron is compact and lightweight.

As with any electrical appliance, you should check for warranty length, repairs, and replacement guarantees. Safeguards such as a 1-year warranty or money-back guarantee indicates the manufacturer backs the product’s reliability.

Extra Travel Iron Features

To make a travel iron stand out, manufacturers like to add a few extra features such as:

  • stainless steel soleplate
  • handy travel pouch
  • anti-drip design
  • steam control

This makes the product unique and leaves it up to you, the buyer, to decide which addition you like before deciding on which travel iron to buy.

Steam Vs. Press Iron

Will you really need a travel iron with a steam feature on the road, or just a small, electric one?

Irons are great for pressing out creases as long as you have an ironing board or other surface to press on. The more compact (smaller) the iron, the longer it will take to finish the job.

A travel iron with a steam feature allows you to steam out any wrinkles while smoothing the material at the same time with the hotplate.

Then there are the standalone  garment steamers  that remove creases, but can’t replicate that sharp edges look some travellers require for work situations.

You can decide which features your iron should have, before deciding which model is best.
