Don’t just take it from us! Read reviews from our customers.

Great bargain and excellent tour. I cannot think of any must-see stops in greater LA that were missed. Our guide, Aron, was patient, knowledgeable and entertaining. He made adjustments to the schedule to personally accommodate the desires of our group. Ours was a very international group representing England, New Zealand and Canada. If you are looking for a quiet tour without interacting with others, this isn’t for you. But if you don’t take yourself seriously, enjoy a laugh, and don’t mind people staring as you drive around in this colorful bus you couldn’t make a better choice….

With only one day to see the LA area, my husband and I decided to book this tour. We looked over A LOT of other tours online, but we found this one to be the most well-rounded. After having now completed the tour, I can attest that it didn’t disappoint!

Our guide, Jake, was HILLARIOUS! He was fun, kept the tour upbeat, and made sure to answer any questions we had. A total rock star! The time spent at each stop wasn’t necessarily long, however we spent the most time at the places that were most interesting – the grove, the strip, and the Griffith Observatory.

After the tour, we received an email asking for feedback. To which, they actually responded to – you don’t see that these days so kudos to them! We’re excited to hear that they’re looking into providing different tours.

We’d love to book with them again, but wouldn’t want to do the one we already did (great general/overview tour). We’re hoping to narrow do one in future that appeals to our specific interests – that way, we can spend more time at the spots we’d enjoy most 🙂

Our family of 7 (2 adults and 5 kids aged 6-15) had a wonderful time on this tour. We started and ended in Santa Monica and travelled all over the city, with several stops to explore. We visited Venice, drove by the stars’ homes, stopped at Graystone, Griffith Park, Hollywood Boulevard, and a lunch stop at the Farmer’s Market. Our guide, Kimeko, was knowledgeable, friendly, and entertaining, The tour lasted from 9:45 until about 5pm, and our guide was full of information, yet gave us some time to just take in the scenery, She welcomed questions. And yes, the price was $75. I think that many people may suspect that this tour may be inferior to others due to the low price. The Rastabus is simply a great tour which just happens to be a great deal.

My husband and I were staying in Palm Springs for a week and decided to take a day trip out to LA to see the main sites. Having only one day in LA, we decided to look for a tour that would show us the most sites. This tour did that and a lot more! Jake was an amazing tour guide!! Very funny and entertaining and played amazing music the whole time (we regret not asking him for his playlist afterwards!). He showed us everything we could’ve wanted to see and also had so many stories to share about his own personal experiences with stars in the area. His knowledge of the area was also very helpful when we had to take detours due to traffic. He always kept the bus moving and got us everywhere quickly. It was fun to hear some of crazy hollywood stories about the stars and see sites that most tours woudn’t tell you about (“this is where Lindsey Lohan crashed her car”, “this is where Mel Gibson was arrested for drunk driving”!). Even though it was an action packed day, nothing felt rushed. We had sufficient time to explore Rodeo Drive, Hollywood Blvd and Griffith Park on our own. I still can’t believe how cheap this tour is as we would’ve paid a lot more for it! Even though we only had the one day in LA, we really feel like we saw everything there. I will recommend this tour to anyone going to LA. Thanks for a fantastic day Jake!!

We went on the LA tour with Rastabus and thoroughly enjoyed it. The bus was not jam packed like others ive been on so everyone talked to each other. The guide was knowledgeable and constantly kept us informed on where we were going and info about the place – he also answered any questions anyone had. We pretty much covered all the spots that everyone wanted to see and our driver did ask if there was anything in particular we wanted to see then to just let him know, so that was good. We stopped at each place for just the right amount of time, not too long to get bored but just long enough to see what was needed. The trip lasted the whole day and i would definitely recommend if you are visiting LA.

A great tour, takes in all the LA sites and a bit extra. Kimeko picked us up from our hotel and then deviated to show myself and 2 teenage daughters The Venice Canals. We met up with others at Santa Monica and were greeted with coffee and doughnuts, then went on to Venice Beach. Following this stopped at Rodeo Drive and the farmers market (for amazing fish tacos). Off then to Hollywood spotting lots of celebs homes, Griffith Park (Hollywood Sign) and then Sunset Strip. Definitely one of the highlights of our time in California and because the bus is small you get to know your fellow travelers too. Would do it all again

A full day tour…This is the best value for tours in LA. I booked this for the first day of my vacation in LA. The tour takes you to the most popular areas… the stars homes, Beverly Hills, Hollywood etc. etc… with stops along the way to get out and take pictures and explore. I had planned a day trip to Beverly Hills, but the stop on the tour was all I really needed … gave me an extra day on my vacation. The tour is very personable, our guide was witty and there was 9 of us from 4 different countries all laughing and joking. You see the other tours going by, everyone looking like statues with headphones on. I’d book it quick!

For anyone that really wants to see LA this is the tour for you. Sit back, relax and and love it. Tour through all the hot spots in LA and enjoy the sights! The tour of LA was great and i believe the Segway tour of venice beach and santa monica was just as good! I never knew how much a fun a segway was (even though you do look funny). Both of of my tour guides for both tours were great. i was a little nervous at first coming to LA – but this company made me feel very safe and secure. I left my camera on the bus and they hand delivered it later in the night to my hotel for free. It shows the really care.

Tooling around LA on the Rastabus is a great way to be introduced to LA in a short amount of time. Our guide Matt was a whole lot of fun, and very knowledgeable about the city. You get to see all the main tourist destinations, and some gossip on some of the celebrities who live there. The Farmer’s Market is a great place to stop and have lunch, and it is great to start the day in beautiful Santa Monica. If you are only in LA for a short time, this is a really good way to make sure you don’t miss anything.

Based upon tripadvisor reviews I booked a tour. This tour could not have been better!!!! Our tour guide was so good I brought back lunch for him at a restaurant he recommended. Our tour guide showed so much enthusiasm it was like we were the first group he took (which we were not we later learned). This is a tour you will enjoy and learn from.

I’m so glad I took a Guideline Tour over the many other advertised LA sightseeing tours. Rather than the typical big bus with the company name and logo painted on the side, we were picked up in a black Mercedes van that was air conditioned, comfortable, and relatively inconspicuous . The tour size was small (about 8 guests). Our tour guide, Paul, was fabulous. He had extensive knowledge of the LA area, he was easy to hear and understand, he interacted nicely with the group, he had a good sense of humor, and he was very accommodating. Read more

Berries for sale at the Original Farmers Market

Highlights: Open-air market offering fresh produce and local goods every day of the week

The Los Angeles Farmers Market first started in 1934 as a very modest affair that sprung from the hardships created by the Great Depression. At the height of the economic depression, eighteen farmers came together and set up stalls on a piece of open land near Wilshire Boulevard in order to sell their produce direct to the consumer.

This experiment was so successful that the market continued to expand. At that time, it truly was a fruit and vegetable market, but over the years the market has grown to accommodate more and more vendors. Today, the market hosts vegetable and other food stands, as well as restaurants and specialty shops. You can find everything from jewelry and candles to kitchenware and toys.

If you are looking for things to do at night in Los Angeles, the market hosts a variety of entertainment, including free evening concerts on Friday nights in summer.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art lays claim to being the largest art museum in the western United States , with almost 130,000 pieces spanning from antiquity through to modern times. Of particular note are the outstanding collections of Asian, Latin American, and Islamic Art.

The most recent expansion, known as the Transformation, saw the opening of several new buildings on the western half of the campus, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop. The LACMA is next to the La Brea Tar Pits on museum row.

Address: 5905 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, California

Venice Beach

Highlights: Sunny beach with snaking bike path and bohemian shopping corridor

Venice Beach deserves its reputation as a place to see and be seen, making it perfect for people-watching, although the area definitely has its own unique vibe. This stretch of golden sand and the Venice Beach Boardwalk are always thronged with people walking, cycling, rollerblading, and jogging.

Eclectic shops and street performers of all kinds line the walkway. The Skatepark , also just off the beach, is frequented by some of the area's best skateboarders, and nearby are a number of creative art installations. At the appropriately named Muscle Beach , gym members pump iron in the hot California sun.

Food stalls selling everything from shaved ice to kettle corn and funnel cakes make you feel like you're walking through fairgrounds. You can also find some good restaurants here. This is not a typical family beach, but it's well worth a visit.

Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills borders Los Angeles to the west, encompassing 5.7 square miles tucked beneath the Santa Monica Mountains. And within this small footprint are some of the poshest streets in America, including the world-famous Rodeo Drive .

Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica Boulevard, and Wilshire Boulevard converge in Beverly Hills to create the city's " Golden Triangle " of upscale retail and dining. This luxe thoroughfare is worth the visit even without shopping, as the glamour spills out onto the sidewalks with celebrity sightings and luxury cars.

And there are a lot more things to do in Beverly Hills besides shopping and dining. The city is very walkable with several gardens, historic buildings, and public art throughout. Spend some time at Beverly Gardens Park for a sample of these first-class public spaces.

Page Museum and La Brea Tar Pits

Highlights: Indoor and outdoor exhibits detailing the incredible natural history of the area

In Hancock Park, La Brea Tar Pits offers a unique opportunity to see live excavations of fossils and learn about the process. The Tar Pits were formed 40,000 years ago, when oil seeped through the rock, entrapping passing animals, which would get stuck in the substance. The tar then preserved the fossils throughout the ages, leaving behind an incredible glimpse into another age.

The museum at la Brea Tar Pits (formerly the George C. Page Museum) shows reconstructed fossils of prehistoric animals found at the site, as well as the process of fossil recovery. You can see bones being worked on and learn what takes place behind the scenes, before skeletons are able to be displayed.

The museum displays fully reconstructed fossils of a variety of mammals including mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and others, all dating from between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. An outdoor area displays replicas of extinct animals.

Plans are in the works for a renovation and new design. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is reviewing plans from architecture teams in the hopes of reinventing this unique attraction.

Lanterns in Little Tokyo

Highlights: Japanese restaurants, historic fire tower, wishing tree, gardens

Los Angeles is home to one of just three remaining Japantowns in the United States: Little Tokyo. The petite neighborhood packs tons of culture, cuisine, and color into about five city blocks.

The Japanese Village Plaza is considered the central gathering place. Lit by red and white paper lanterns, this pedestrian-only plaza feels like it was plucked from Tokyo and dropped into Downtown Los Angeles. Check out the Yagura Tower at the First Street entrance—this replica of a rural Japanese fire tower has been greeting visitors for nearly 50 years.

In addition to popular shops, like Nijiya grocery store and the Sanrio Hello Kitty boutique , another major attraction is the wishing tree . People from around the world jot down their hopes and dreams on colorful paper strips, then hang them from the tree's branches in hopes that they'll come to fruition. Reading the notes is deeply touching.

Come hungry—Little Tokyo has some of the best Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles. Slurp ramen noodles at Hachioji , fill up on okonomiyaki (a Hiroshima speciality!) at Chinchikurin , and satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh mochi from the 120-year-old Fugetsu-Do Bakery Shop .

Los Angeles notoriously enjoys warm weather throughout the year. However, the best seasons to visit are the "shoulder seasons," including spring (March, April, May) and fall (September, October, and November). The air is easier to breathe this time of year, and the streets are less crowded with tourists.

June, July, and August are still some of the most popular times to visit Lost Angeles. And for good reason. The hot weather beckons for the beach and the late evenings extend a day of exploring. Expect to pay the highest rates for things like lodging and transportation this time of year.

The winter months, including December, January, and February, are suitable months to visit. Expect slightly colder temperatures that keep most people away from the beach. But, with average daytime temperatures still in the 60s Fahrenheit, it's often a welcomed warm escape from other parts of the country.

Earthquake Rattles Coastal Area Near Los Angeles

Preliminary estimates said a 4.7-magnitude temblor was centered near Malibu. The authorities were determining whether there was any significant damage.

Shake intensity

Reporting from Los Angeles

Los Angeles residents were rattled Thursday morning by an earthquake centered north of the coastal city of Malibu.

Preliminary estimates showed it was a magnitude 4.7 quake, according to the United States Geological Survey. Quakes of that magnitude are often felt widely but tend to do only minor damage, if any.

Across the region, which has been shaken by several temblors in recent months, some residents still in bed were awakened just before 7:30 a.m. by an emergency alert on their phones that urged them to “drop, cover, hold on,” and protect themselves.

“I’m sure there are a bunch of people that jumped out of bed when that thing hit this morning,” said Steve Uhring, the mayor of Malibu.

Mr. Uhring, 77, was sitting in his home office when a strong jolt made the floor shake. His computer moved, he said, adding that it almost seemed to him as though the walls tilted a bit. His dog Izzy, a pit bull mix, jumped up and ran out of the room.

But Mr. Uhring said he did not have time to get under his desk. “A little shaking, and then it was over,” he said, adding that city officials in Malibu had not received any reports of damage.

Los Angeles Fire officials said that after surveying the city, no significant infrastructure damage or injuries were noted. They encouraged residents to use the incident as a reminder to prepare for “inevitable” earthquake activity in the region.

The quake was followed by a number of smaller aftershocks, as is common.

In the area around the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the middle of the city, where construction crews have been working for months, a jolt was followed by a slower wobble. Construction workers stood on the roof of the museum as it swayed slightly.

Beds, window blinds and shelves rattled for about 15 seconds in neighborhoods dozens of miles from the quake’s center, including Culver City and Silver Lake. Parents getting their children ready for school ducked under kitchen tables.

But for the most part, the weekday morning continued as usual. Residents walked their dogs, coffee in hand, as if nothing had happened. Drivers continued to crawl through rush hour traffic without interruption.

Many Southern California residents have been unnerved by what has felt like an increase in seismic activity this year.

On Aug. 7, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake centered near the Central Valley city of Bakersfield, about 110 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, rattled a large area. Then on Aug. 12 , a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near the Los Angeles suburb of Pasadena, shaking densely populated neighborhoods on the city’s east side.

Does the activity mean the region’s long overdue “big one” is imminent? Angelenos have been pondering the question in group chats and on social media. Many have declared they are finally getting their earthquake kits together and anchoring bookshelves to walls.

Lucy Jones , Southern California’s best-known earthquake expert, answered the question with a resounding “no”: Frequent smaller temblors do not mean that a major earthquake is more likely.

Dr. Jones said that overall, Southern California has been relatively quiet on the seismic front since 1993. However, she said, there has been a notable increase this year in the number of earthquake series in Southern California in which at least one was magnitude 4.0 or higher. (Earthquakes often occur in a series, with foreshocks or aftershocks.)

As of mid-August, there had been more than a dozen such series, compared with just six last year, two in 2022 and four in 2021.

She said it was too soon to tell whether this apparent increase is a statistically insignificant blip on a vast time scale, or the region really is tipping into a more active earthquake period.

“Maybe in 1,000 years, we’ll be able to tell you what it means,” she said. But for now, “all we can do is observe it. It’s all within a framework of lots of randomness in a very chaotic system.”

Dr. Jones said that residents should take the recent temblors as a cue to get ready for the dangerous quakes that could come at any moment.

“We’ve had a really easy time the last few decades,” she said. “Let’s remember that we really are earthquake country.”

Alexa Díaz , Corina Knoll , Nicole Stock and Lauren Dragan contributed reporting.

Harvey Weinstein Update: Accused Rapist Indicted on More Sex Crime Charges

With a new memoir 20 years after breakout hit ‘Leave (Get Out),’ JoJo is back in control

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Joanna "JoJo" Levesque looks contemplative as she rests one hand in the palm of another beside her chin.

For a long time, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque resented “Leave (Get Out),” her best-known, breakout track released in 2004 when she was just 13. “This song was on some Disney Channel s—,” she writes in her memoir, “Over the Influence.” Although she was the target demographic for the family-friendly programming she likened her song to, Levesque thought of herself as a wise-beyond-her-years R&B and soul singer, the genres that she had been firmly working in up to that point in her young life and that the rest of her self-titled debut album consisted of.

“I like it now. I just didn’t get it then,” Levesque, 33, says on a video call from her New York apartment.

“It’s a totally different experience singing ‘Leave (Get Out),’ ‘Too Little Too Late’ or ‘Disaster’ or any of these songs that are about breakups or relationships as an adult, versus being 12, 15, even 20. You get more grit and texture and experience under your belt. It’s the difference between phoning it in and feeling it. I’m thinking about this person as I’m singing it, and I’m able to drop into that because I have a memory of telling someone to get the f— out of my house, it’s done.”

Kanye West in a black shirt, jeans and sunglasses holding a microphone on stage with Taylor Swift holding an award

On 15th anniversary of Kanye’s VMAs interruption, will Taylor Swift rerelease ‘Reputation’ as ultimate rebuttal?

On the 15th anniversary of Kanye West’s VMAs interruption, will Taylor Swift stage the ultimate clapback by dropping the long-awaited ‘Taylor’s Version’ of her West revenge album, ‘Reputation’?

Sept. 10, 2024

Far from a one-hit wonder, Levesque has been working steadily since her debut single, as a singer and actor, including in the films “Aquamarine” and “G.B.F.” and the show “All American.” Admittedly, her recording career never again reached the heights of “Leave (Get Out),” which made her the youngest female solo performer to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart, largely due to a prolonged legal battle with her record label Blackground.

In 2013, Levesque filed a lawsuit against Blackground Records to be released from her contract, which she signed as a minor and, under New York state law, should have elapsed after seven years. Unable to release albums, she put out mixtapes and “tringles” (trios of singles) instead. Both parties came to an agreement out of court but Levesque found similar creative differences at her next label, Atlantic Records .

“It was like every Tom, Dick and Harry was encouraged to voice their opinions about what they thought I should do,” Levesque writes. “I came in with a vision, but I don’t even remember what it was anymore.”

A blond woman in a white tank top and black leather skirt sits on a chair with feet stretched.

She finally found some independence by launching her own imprint, Clover Music — a joint venture with Warner Records — in 2017.

Long before Taylor Swift began re-recorded her albums in 2021 after losing ownership when Scott Borchetta, the chief executive of her former record label, Big Machine, sold her masters to music manager Scooter Braun, Levesque embarked on a re-recording journey of her own in 2018.

“That was between me and my fans so that I could feel some sense of empowerment when my music was not available on streaming services because my record label didn’t make a deal with the DSPs [digital service providers],” she says. “I was so sick of feeling like things were happening to me as opposed to me being in control.”

Although Swift and Levesque did have a “moment” during Swift’s “ squad ” era in which they were friendly, Levesque says Swift did not approach her for advice about re-recording her “Taylor’s Versions.” “I do appreciate those who noticed that I did it a few years before,” Levesque says.

“Over the Influence” by Joanna “JoJo” Levesque

This battle for control is one that has followed Levesque throughout her career and, indeed, her life. The title of her memoir, “Over the Influence,” has a double meaning. First, it refers to intergenerational trauma — her parents met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, and her father, Joel, died of complications from drug addiction in 2015. Levesque says she’s cautious of coming across as “judgmental” of her parents. But she need not be: Levesque crafts a remarkably compassionate portrait of not only “my story [but also] our story” that’s bolstered by fastidious journal entries she’s kept throughout her life. “It was interesting to see the things I thought I had overcome that I hadn’t,” she says.

She also had a lot of deep and meaningful conversations with her mom, Diana, who helped Levesque fill in the blanks of her own childhood memories as well as her parents’ early relationship. “I’m grateful that she was even open to going there with me,” Levesque says.

Things could have certainly gone a lot worse for Levesque as a child star. “Maybe I dodged a bullet,” she writes in “Over the Influence” — out Tuesday. “I’ve seen the doc and listened to the podcasts and OH MY GOD.”

Levesque’s mom was her reluctant manager who shielded her from a lot of it. Momagers often get a bad rap, but Levesque says she wasn’t pressured into pursuing fame at a young age. “I wanted a different life than the one my mom and I had, and I felt like I could be the one to get us there,” she says. Still, that’s a lot for a pre-teen.

“She did a great job of trying to keep me humble, but from a young age, I really wasn’t told no, and I do think that that can create a monster. It gave me a false sense of the world. Already, [I’m] an only child. People are telling [me] that [I’m] so great and talented and [I] deserve certain things, and then I become famous?” she muses. “It’s only in hindsight that I can see that I might have been spared some growing pains if I had had more parenting, in a sense.”

‘Seinfeld’ star Michael Richards is more than the worst thing that ever happened to him

‘Seinfeld’ star Michael Richards reflects on his infamous racist tirade in his memoir, ‘Entrances and Exits.’ Yes, he is sorry. And he accepts the descent into purgatory that followed.

The second allusion in the book’s title is to the freedom to determine her own career path.

“For so much of my life, [I’ve felt] under the influence of other people’s visions [as to] what I should want and what my values should be: ascension or topping the success I had as a teenager,” she says.

“I am eternally grateful for [‘Leave (Get Out)’] because I now have a life that I really enjoy,” she later adds.

That includes her return as Satine in the Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge!,” alongside Aaron Tveit.

“Her voice is very moving to me,” Tviet says. “There’s so much emotion conveyed by [it].”

Levesque made her Broadway debut as Satine in 2023, following a pandemic closure spent singing show tunes with her mom. She thrives on the repetition and stability that musical theater offers.

“I didn’t have a lot of that growing up. I was always doing different things — being in a different city, being around different people, moving a lot,” she says. “As an adult who has an inner child, I’m giving her the structure that she might’ve needed.”

Although Levesque did perform in musical theater as a kid, she’s newly inspired by the combination of singing and acting that Broadway affords. “It’s a really exciting time for me, because a lot of my passions can intermingle pretty seamlessly,” she says, adding that she’s been workshopping an original musical during the day — while performing as Satine in the evenings.

“It’s not something for that faint of heart,” Tviet adds, but “I think she has a lot to offer to musical theater.”

Joanna "JoJo" Levesque, with shoulder-length blond wavy hair, looks out a window.

After Tveit and Levesque take their final bow Oct. 13, Levesque has a tour and new music planned, under the tutelage of her co-manager Randy Jackson — yes, that Randy Jackson . Although the two connected in 2021 when Levesque was a contestant on “Name That Tune” (Jackson is bandleader of the Fox game show), they had actually met years earlier when Levesque was starting out. Jackson was interested in signing her to his record label at the time.

“I’m interested in people who’ve had longevity. [I’ve been doing this for a long time], but there’s people who’ve been doing this for a really long time, and I want to know, how do you maintain good relationships, how do you nurture business relationships?” Levesque says of Jackson.

Jackson calls Levesque a “triple threat” of music, screen and stage. “You have to be inspired by the person and their personality first, and [talent second],” he says.

The cool girl at the fairground from the “Leave (Get Out)” music video is certainly on display in “Over the Influence” and is a persona Levesque has adopted as a kind of “ eccentric auntie ” to her fans and others coming up in the industry.

“I’m an only child, so I’m nobody’s aunt, but I think that I could be a help to people,” she says. “I want to share what I have to give.”

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake has rattled the Los Angeles area. It unleashed boulders onto a Malibu road and shook Santa Monica’s pier on Thursday morning. No injuries or damages were immediately reported. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake was centered north of Malibu. It was felt as far as Orange County. Malibu Councilmember Bruce Silverstein says it's the hardest quake he had felt in 13 years. The quake followed recent wildfires and a heat wave in the region. Several celebrities shared their experiences on social media, expressing surprise and concern. Some residents said they were alerted by the state’s earthquake early warning system.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A 4.7 magnitude earthquake rattled the Los Angeles area Thursday morning, unleashing boulders onto a Malibu road, visibly shaking Santa Monica's 1909 wooden pier and jolting some people from bed. No injuries or damages were immediately reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was centered 4 miles (7 kilometers) north of Malibu and was about 7 miles (11 kilometers) below the surface.

The jolt was felt as far as 45 miles (72 kilometers) away in Orange County, where people reported items moving in their homes. It was followed by several smaller aftershocks.

Officials around the region said authorities were surveying for damage, but had not found anything major.

The earthquake occurred closest to the Malibu fault, but was also near the Anacapa fault, according to California Institute of Technology seismologist Lucy Jones. Earthquakes below magnitude 5.0 are too small to be definitively associated with large faults that are mapped at the earth’s surface.

“It’s a garden-variety Southern California earthquake,” Jones said.

A live camera at the 115-year-old Santa Monica Pier, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Malibu, showed several seconds of intense shaking during the quake. Several morning newscasts also captured the earthquake live as cameras shook in television studios.

A crew was working on clearing large boulders that rolled onto Malibu Canyon Road, near the epicenter, KTLA-TV reported.

Malibu Councilmember Bruce Silverstein said he has lived in the community for 13 years and this was the hardest quake yet, but nothing broke.

“Our house shook for about two or three seconds. I was concerned the windows were going to pop,” Silverstein said.

Rene Vasquez, manager at The Country Kitchen breakfast place in Malibu, said the shaking lasted a few seconds and kitchen staff ducked outside as a precaution.

“It wasn’t that bad,” Vasquez said. “Thank God nothing fell.”

People, including several celebrities, took to social media to post they were awakened by a jolt.

Hotel heiress and media personality Paris Hilton wrote on X, “That #Earthquake was scary.” Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian posted: “Damn that was a big one.”

Some residents said they were alerted by the state’s earthquake early warning system.

The quake happened as the region has been dealing with three major wildfires burning east of Los Angeles that torched dozens of homes and forced thousands to evacuate. The blazes erupted during a blistering heat wave that has just subsided.

A number of quakes have been felt in the area in recent months, including a 4.4 magnitude earthquake in August that rattled nerves from the Los Angeles area to San Diego, swaying buildings, knocking items off shelves and setting off car alarms. The temblor caused a pipe to burst at the ornate 1927 Pasadena City Hall building.

In February, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake was felt in Malibu that occurred south of Thursday’s earthquake.

Thursday’s event was the 14th earthquake sequence of magnitude 4.0 in Southern California this year. While this is above the average of eight to 10 per year in the past few decades, it’s too soon to tell whether the increased activity is statistically significant, said Jones, the Caltech seismologist. The previous highest number was 13 earthquakes of this size in 1988.

Taxin reported from Orange County. Associated Press writer Olga R. Rodriguez in San Francisco also contributed.
