It is elevated at an altitude of 3133 mt above sea level, from the left of river Alakhnanda. This sacred place is devoted to Lord Vishnu, legends says that Lord Vishnu maditated at this place.

This temple is situated at an altitude of 3584 m above the sea level, followed by the river Mandakini. Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirling of Lord Shiva. Uttarakhand, also known as Devbhoomi or the Land of Gods, is home to numerous temples and welcomes devotees all year round. Among the countless religious sites and circuits that devotees visit in Uttarakhand, one of the most prominent is the Char Dham Yatra. This Yatra or pilgrimage is a tour of four holy sites - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath – nestled high up in the Himalayas. In Hindi, 'char' means four and 'dham' refers to religious destinations.

The high-altitude shrines remain shut for around six months every year, opening in summers (April or May) and closing with the onset of winter (October or November). It is believed that one should complete the Char Dham Yatra in a clockwise direction. Hence, the pilgrimage starts from Yamunotri, proceeds towards Gangotri, onto Kedarnath, and finally ends at Badrinath. The journey can be completed by road or by air (helicopter services are available). Some devotees even do a Do Dham Yatra or a pilgrimage to two shrines - Kedarnath and Badrinath.

The Yamunotri temple, lodged in a narrow gorge close to the source of River Yamuna (the second-most sacred Indian river after River Ganga) in Uttarkashi district, is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The district of Uttarkashi is also home to Gangotri dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the most sacred of all Indian rivers. Located in the Rudraprayag district lies Kedarnath, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Badrinath, home to the sacred Badrinarayan Temple, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Char Dham Yatra is as divine as it is arduous but fulfills the soul!

Ans : If you forget to register yourself before starting the journey, you can also do registration during travelling through the Tourist Care Uttarakhand portal or visit the registration centres.

Q6: How to reach Kedarnath?  

Ans : In order to visit Char Dham or any of the dhams, one has to first reach Haridwar or Rishikesh. Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is around 20 km away from Rishikesh. This airport is well connected with all major cities in India. The nearest railway stations to reach Kedarnath are Rishikesh (around 200 km away) or Haridwar (around 120 km). From Rishikesh or Haridwar one can start the yatra by Yatra Buses run by GMVN Ltd, GMOU Ltd. and TGMOU Ltd. Taxi service is also available from Haridwar and Rishikesh to Gaurikund, the last road stop before Kedarnath.

From Gaurikund you have to take the 17-km uphill trek that leads to Kedarnath Dham. Pony, doli (palanquin) and helicopter shuttle services are easily available.

Q7: How to reach Badrinath?  

Ans: From Rishikesh and Haridwar buses and taxis are easily available. Badrinath is around 300 km from Rishikesh, and 320 km from Haridwar.

Q8: How to reach Yamunotri?  

Ans : To reach Yamunotri, the first stop in the Char Dham yatra, you have to travel to Janki Chatti, which is around 220 km by road from Rishikesh. Taxis and busses are easily available. From here, take the 5-km uphill trek to Yamunotri Dham. Pony and doli services are available.

Q9: How to reach Gangotri?

  Ans: Gangotri is very well connected by road. Rishikesh to Gangotri is around 270 km and travellers can book buses/taxis that are easily available from Rishikesh and Haridwar.

Char Dham Yatra Route Map

The Chardham yatra in Uttarakhand has even displaced the major Char Dham yatra comprising of Badrinath, Rameshwaram, Puri and Dwarka in terms of popularity with millions flocking to these pilgrimage sites. The terrain is challenging. Apart from a sense of religious fulfillment, one also gets satisfaction in being able to complete such a tough pilgrimage.  Before you set output together all information and one set comprises of knowing the route that takes you across scenic mountainous regions of Uttarakhand, Land of Gods. It is traditional Hindu practice that the circumambulation follows a clockwise pattern. Therefore, the Chardham yatra commences with Yamunotri being the first stop followed by Gangotri, Kedarnath and, finally, Badrinath. This is how the pilgrimage is undertaken on the commonly followed route map. More details below.

Concise Sketch for the Road Travel to Chardham

• 6 hours Delhi to Haridwar: 210 km
• 7 hours Haridwar to Barkot: 220 Km
• 7 hours by road and trek 7 km (can take more than 2 hours) Barkot to Yamunotri: 36 Km + 7 km
• 4 hours Barkot to Uttarkashi: 100 Km
• 4 Hours Uttarkashi to Gangotri: 100 km
• 7-8 hours Uttarkashi to Rudraprayag: 180 km
• 4 hours Rudraprayag to Kedarnath drive: 74 Km and 20 Km trek (greater part of the day)

These are rough estimates. Be prepared to any eventuality that may cause delays like traffic jams on the narrow mountainous roads.

The route starts from Haridwar and goes on to Barkot, Yamunotri, Uttarkashi, Gangotri, Guptkashi, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Rishikesh and back to Rishikesh or Haridwar and from there to other destinations.

Yamunotri Route Map

The pilgrimage to Yamunotri is relatively easy but gives you a glimpse of how tough it can get as you proceed. Yamunotri is located in Garhwal alongside the River Yamuna and has a shrine dedicated to Yamuna Mata. Said to have been built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal, it is the starting point to the Yatra. You can commence your journey by road from Delhi or arrive at Haridwar and then proceed onwards to Rishikesh and so on. This is the route map of Yamunotri:

• Delhi to Rishikesh:  231 Km
• Rishikesh to Narendranagar to Chama to Brahmkhal to Barkot: 117 Km
• Barkot is the staging point. You can just as well travel by road using alternate routes.
• Barkot to Sayana Chatti to Hanuman Chatti to Phool Chatti to Janki Chatti is the next leg covering a total of 41 kms. From Janki Chatti to Yamuna is a trek of 6 km. You can go on foot or hire a pony or a palanquin.

Along the way you can stop at Saptarishi Kund, Surya Kund and Divya Shila, each of which has religious significance.

Gangotri Route Map

Gangotri has a shrine dedicated to Mata Ganga Devi on the banks of the Bhagirathi at a height of 3200 metres. Built by General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18 th century, this is where Ganga is said to have descended to Earth in the matted locks of Lord Shiva.

After Yamunotri Darshan you travel to Uttarkashi and proceed to Bhatwari and then onwards to Gangnani and Harsil, the jumping off point for the Gangotri Yatra , a distance of 98 kilometres in all. Fortunately, you do not have to trek a long distance since Gangotri temple is only a short distance from Harsil.

Kedarnath Route Map

The next stop is Kedarnath, the toughest Yatra in that it involves an extended trek of 14 kms. From Harsil you return to Uttarkashi and go on to Tehri and travel the 100 km odd distance to Guptkashi. The next stop is Sonprayag, about 14 km by road. Phata is on the way, a starting point for the helicopter Yatra to Kedarnath . However, you proceed by road to Gaurikund, about 5 km away. From here it is a trek of 14 km to the shrine of Kedarnath .

There is an alternative route from Srinagar to Rudraprayag to Tilwara to Agastyamuni to Kund to Guptkashi to Phata to Rampur to Sonprayag and Gauri Kund, a total distance of 100 km but the road may not be accessible so the currently route is from Gaurikund to Rambara Bridge to Linchauli to Kedarnath, a distance of 16 km.

Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga in India, the abode of Lord Shiva at a height of 3586 metres in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. The shrine is located alongside the Mandakini River, which gushes forth in a noisy torrent while the surroundings are absolutely peaceful and calm. The present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8 th century but the place is as old as time, finding mention in the Mahabharata.

Badrinath Route Map

Badrinath is home to Lord Vishnu. Badrinath is the name by which he is known here since he meditated for millenia under the Badri tree, which, actually, was the form assumed by Mata Laxmi to protect him from the elements. Located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3133 metres on the banks of the torrential Alaknanda, Badrinath is of special importance since it is also one of the major char Dham pilgrimage destinations.

From Kedarnath you drive down to Guptkashi and take the road via Chopta to Chamoli and proceed to Joshimath from where you travel onwards to Govindghat and then Badrinath, a short route. Some people, if they arrive from Rishikesh, take the straight road via Devprayag to Rudraprayag and then go on to Karnaprayag, Chamoli and then Joshimath, the winter home of Badrinath.

The distance from Rudraprayag to Joshimath is 110 Km and from Joshimath to Badrinath you travel a distance of 42 kms. After Darshan at Badrinath temple you can drive straight back to Haridwar.

Important places in the vicinity are Mana Village, Tapt Kund, Neelkanth Peak, Narad Kund, Ganesh Cave and Vyas Cave among others.

First, you will reach Phool Chatti and then Janaki Chatti, which is the last stop before you reach Yamunotri. However, there are some resting places and several shops for tea breaks.

The main attraction of the Yamunotri pilgrimage is the Yamunotri temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Situated at an altitude of 3,291 m, the glacier is considered the source of the Yamuna River. The main deity of the temple is Goddess Yamuna, who is also believed to be the daughter of the Sun God.

Apart from the main temple, there are quite a few other attractions that you can also visit. For example, a hot water spring called Surya Kund where the devotees cook rice and potatoes, and accept it as Prasad from Goddess Yamuna. There is also a rock pillar that you need to worship before entering the main temple, which is also considered sacred.

After seeking blessings from Goddess Yamuna, it’s time to find your way back to Hanuman Chatti. Then the process of visiting the next destination, Gangotri, begins. The return journey also offers spectacular views of the Himalayas, somewhat different from the previous one.

Gangotri Route

The Gangotri route is a significant part of the Char Dham Yatra. It holds immense spiritual importance since it is the main origin of the Ganges, the holiest river in India.

The journey begins from the town of Rishikesh and can be easily accessed via rail or road. Like Yamunotri, Rishikesh serves as a major gateway to Gangotri. After seeking blessings and strength from the temples in Rishikesh, you need to proceed towards the first stop, Uttarkashi.

Uttarkashi is situated about 147 km from Rishikesh, and the journey takes around 6-7 hours. Uttarkashi is a picturesque town nestled in the Himalayan mountain range that acts as a base for the Gangotri Yatra. Upon reaching Uttarkashi, you must rest for some time to acclimatise yourself to the higher altitude.

From Uttarkashi, your next destination is Gangotri. To reach Gangotri, you need to cover a distance of 197 km, which is difficult, but not impossible. On this route, you will cover places like Bhatwari, Gangnani, and Harshil. The journey is a treat to the eye with beautiful waterfalls, lush forests, and snow-capped mountains.

Gangotri is renowned for the Gangotri Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The holiest river in India, the Ganges, originated from Gangotri Glacier, which is another reason to visit this place. Situated at an altitude of 3,048 m, Gangotri is adjacent to the Indo-Tibetan border as well. After you reach the temple, it’s time to seek blessings and take in the tranquil surroundings of the temple.

However, you can follow some other routes as well to reach Gangotri. From Rishikesh, you can go to Dehradun and then to Mussoorie. Mussoorie is one of the most picturesque hill towns in Uttarakhand. Mussoorie, Chinyalisaur, Uttarkashi, Harshil, and then Gangotri could be another convenient route for you.

Another route to reach Gangotri is via Devprayag. However, this is the longest route anyone can take, as you have to cover a distance of 300 km. Rishikesh, Devprayag, Maletha, Uttarkashi, Harshil, and Gangotri is the route here.

Kedarnath Route

After visiting Gangotri, you need to walk your way towards Kedarnath. Kedarnath is perhaps the most famous pilgrimage site among Char Dham. Situated in the magnificent Himalayan range, Kedarnath is one of the holiest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The journey to Kedarnath begins at the base camp in Gaurikund. Reaching Gaurikund is quite easy as it can be reached from either Haridwar or Rishikesh. The journey to Kedarnath is tricky, and not many people can finish it. The route is challenging, yet breathtaking since it takes you through rivers, forests, and mountains. From Gaurikund, you have to trek for 18 km, which is a little exhausting. However, helicopter services are available for people who don’t want to trek. You can take a helicopter ride from Dehradun, Guptkashi, Sirsi, or Phata.

To reach Kedarnath temple, you have to cover 223 km in total. But when you reach the temple, you will know that your journey was worth everything. The Kedarnath Temple, located at an altitude of 3,584 m, stands as a symbol of devotion and more importantly, resilience. It is believed to be more than a thousand years old, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas. According to a legend, Lord Shiva took shelter in this place after the great Kurukshetra war. If you visit the temple at least once in your life, you’ll be forgiven from all sins as it is believed.

The trek to Kedarnath is challenging and not suitable for all. You have to start early in the morning so that you can reach on time. Make sure to hire a pony or Palki if you are not able to cover that much distance on foot. The trek itself is an adventure where your physical and mental endurance will be tested.

The temple itself is not without challenges as well. In 2013, a tremendous flood devastated the area, including the temple. The temple was restored to its former glory, which is a testament to the underlying faith and determination of the people.

However, Kedarnath has witnessed tremendous growth over the years when it comes to accommodation and other facilities. If you take the journey now, you will have safety and comfort to a certain level. Helicopter services have also played a crucial role to make the journey more comfortable for the elders and physically challenged people.

Badrinath Route

Pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath Temples

After the snow clears at the foothills of the Himalayas in late April, Hindu pilgrims start flocking to the four ancient temples known as Char Dham. Located high up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand , these temples mark the spiritual source of four holy rivers: the Yamuna (at Yamunotri), the Ganges (at Gangotri), the Mandakini (at Kedarnath), and the Alaknanda (at Badrinath). Hindus consider visiting the Char Dham to be very auspicious. Not only is it believed to wash away all sins, it will also ensure release from the cycle of birth and death. There are a number of options for going on a Char Dham yatra (journey).

Char Dham Yatra Overview

The Char Dham are only open at certain times of the year from late April or early May to November. May and June is the peak pilgrimage period. The monsoon season (July to September) can quite dangerous as the rain makes the route slippery.

How Can the Char Dham be Reached?

A Char Dham yatra isn't easy. Pilgrims really need to earn the benefits bestowed, as only two of the temples (Badrinath and Gangotri) are accessible by vehicle. The remaining two (Yamunotri and Kedarnath) require treks. Kedarnath has the lengthiest trek. It takes around 10-12 days to visit all the temples. However, it's now possible to cover all the temples in two days by helicopter.

To help ensure the safety of pilgrims, a medical checkup has been introduced for those trekking to Kedarnath temple. Special checkup points are provided en-route for this. In addition, all pilgrims going on the Char Dham Yatra must complete biometric registration. It can be done online here or at designated registration centers in Uttarakhand. There will be regular weather updates provided along the route, as well as telecommunication network coverage, mobile medical facilities, and a control room. 

Where are the Char Dham Located?

• Badrinath and Gangotri -- are both directly reachable by road from Haridwar , Rishikesh , Kotdwar, and Dehradun.
• Yamunotri -- the trek starts from Janki Chatti, 225 kilometers (140 miles) from Rishikesh .
• Kedarnath -- the trek starts from Gaurikund, 207 kilometers (130 miles) from Rishikesh .

Are there any Tour Packages?

Although it's not difficult to make your own travel arrangements for a Char Dham yatra, there are plenty of Char Dham packages available as well. Two options are:

• Government-operated Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam organizes package tours by bus every year from May to November. There are plenty of options from seeing only one temple to all four temples. It's possible to include the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib too. Most tours depart from Rishikesh but some leave from Haridwar or Dehradun, depending on the itinerary. The shortest tour is four nights and the longest is 11. Tours are priced from around 10,000 rupees per person. Some have shared accommodations and bathroom.
• If you'd prefer a more upmarket option, Leisure Hotels has set up luxury Chardham Camps at each of the sites and offers various package deals .
• Pilgrim Aviation is a reputable private company that offers helicopter tour packages.

The temples are usually visited in clockwork direction, from west to east. This means you should see them in the following order: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath. Haridwar or Rishikesh are the starting points for transportation.

What is the Situation After the 2013 Flood At Kedarnath?

Substantial repair and reconstruction works have been carried after the flash flood in Uttarakhand, which caused extensive devastation and loss of life in the area around Kedarnath temple. This has made the trek much safer and more comfortable for pilgrims.

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering has repaired the damaged stretch of track from Gaurikund to Rambara and made a new track from Rambara to Kedarnath. There are resting points, toilets, tea stalls, medical facilities, police stations, and State Disaster Response Force patrols on the route. Badrinath temple is the most accessible and thus most popular of the Char Dham. You'll find this temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, surrounded by a rather untidy village and overshadowed by the towering, snow-topped, Nilkantha peak.

The opening date is decided by priests on Basant Panchami in February, while the closing date is decided on  Dussehra . Generally, the temple remains open for around 10 days after Diwali . The opening date for 2021 has been announced as May 18.

How to Visit Gangotri Temple

The simple shrine of Gangotri temple has special significance for Hindu pilgrims. It's considered to be one of the holiest places in India as it's regarded as the spiritual source of the ever powerful Ganges River. Set amidst rugged mountains and forest, Gangotri attracts almost 300,000 pilgrims a year. Every evening towards 8 p.m., an aarti (worship with fire) is held at the temple.

When is Gangotri Temple Open?

Gangotri temple opens on a set day every year. This falls on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar), in the last week of April or first week of May.  In 2021, Gangotri will open on May 14. The occasion features a traditional procession of the Goddess Ganga back from her winter home at Mukhyamath temple in Mukhba village, 20 kilometers (12 miles) downstream. The temple closes on Diwali every year, and the Goddess returned to Mukhyamath temple.

How Can Gangotri Temple be Reached?

Gangotri is most popularly reached from Rishikesh (12 hours away) via Uttarkashi (six hours away). It's possible to take a bus or jeep to get there. Guesthouses and a GMVN Tourist Bungalow provide accommodations for those who want to stay.

Trekking to the Actual Source of the Ganges River

If you don't mind a strenuous trek, you can actually go to where the Ganges River emerges from a glacier above Gangotri. The actual source is an ice cave called Gaumukh (meaning Cow's Mouth), 18 kilometers (11 miles) up. Three days are required to complete the return trek, with around six hours of trekking a day. You can stay in a dormitory at a GMVN Tourist Bungalow along the way at Bhojbasa. It's situated around six hours from Gangotri and three hours from Gaumukh.

How to Visit Yamunotri Temple

The Yamunotri temple lies close to the source of the Yamuna River, the second holiest river in India, which flows all the way down past the Taj Mahal . The temple is relatively undeveloped as it's the least visited of the Char Dham. However, there is a certain magic to be experienced from the pristine mountain air, running water, natural scenic beauty, and enthusiastic devotees. Pilgrims also get to enjoy a number of hot water springs in the vicinity of the temple.

When is Yamunotri Temple Open?

The same as Gangotri temple, Yamunotri temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar). It falls in the last week of April or first week of May. In 2021, it is on May 14. The temple also closes for the season on Diwali. On the day the temple opens, the Goddess is carried from the nearby village of Kharsali (said to be Yamuna's mother's home), installed in the temple, and duly returned when the temple closes.

How Can Yamunotri Temple be Reached?

The route by road is Haridwar/Rishikesh-Dehradun-Mussoorie-Naugaon-Barkot–Hanuman Chatti. The journey to the village of Hanuman Chatti, which is around 14 kilometers from the Yamunotri temple, takes around eight hours from Rishikesh and six hours from the hill station of Mussoorie . From there, it's necessary to take a shared taxi (departures every few minutes) to Janki Chatti. Your trek starts there! It's only 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the Yamunotri temple, via Kharsali, but it's a very steep and and in some parts narrow climb. As a result, people usually take around two hours to cover the distance and it really helps if you take a locally available walking stick. If you find you don't want to walk, there are mules and men to help carry you.

Basic guesthouses and GMVN Tourist Bungalows provide accommodations at Yamunotri, Janki Chatti, and Hanuman Chatti. If you stay the night at Yamunotri, you'll be able to witness the evening aarti (worship with fire) there.

Is it Possible to See the Actual Source of the Yamuna River?

The origin of the Yamuna River is a frozen lake and glacier located around a kilometer above the temple. Unless you have mountaineering skills, the climb isn't advised though. It's a very difficult one.

How to Visit Kedarnath Temple

The most remote and holiest of the Char Dham, although Kedarnath temple requires effort to get to, it still draws more than 100,000 pilgrims a year. This is because it's considered to be the seat of Lord Shiva and the most important of the 12 Jyotirlingas (large lingas /shrines to Shiva) in India. It's an impressive temple too -- perhaps the largest and most magnificent one in the Himalayas. Situated high up in Lord Shiva's territory, it occupies a glacial terrace leftover from a long ago melted glacier, in the Mandakini Valley.

When is Kedarnath Temple Open?

The opening date is decided by priests on Maha Shivaratri in late February or early March each year. In 2021, it will open on May 17. The temple closes the day after Diwali each year.

How Can Kedarnath Temple be Reached?

The route to Kedarnath starts off at Rishikesh and heads in the same direction as to Badrinath, but branches off at Rudraprayag (where connections are available). The destination is Gaurikund, 14 kilometers (9 miles) from Kedarnath. The whole journey from Rishikesh takes around 12 hours by bus or jeep. Then, from Gaurikund, it's a grueling uphill trek to the temple. Expect it to take around six hours. The stunning scenery of the Mandakini River along the way helps though! Those who don't feel up to walking can opt to take a pony, which will reduce the duration of the trek by an hour. There are porters available to help carry luggage as well.

Alternatively, Kedranath temple is also accessible by helicopter! The Uttarakhand government provides services departing from various locations and online bookings can be made here . Other options are Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (owned by the Indian government) and private company Pilgrim Aviation . A one way trip only takes 15 minutes.

Where to Stay?

In terms of accommodations, basic GMVN Tourist Bungalows can be found at Gaurikund. Following the devastating 2013 flash flood, which destroyed infrastructure around the temple, the government has constructed tent colonies to accommodate pilgrims. New sanitation facilities, including toilets and bathrooms, have been added along with community kitchens.

How to reach Chardham Sites

The dhams Badrinath and Gangotri can be reached directly by road from Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kotdwar, and Dehradun. For Yamunotri, there is a trek you have to take from Janki Chatti (approx. 210 km from Rishikesh). Similarly, for Kedarnath, a trek starts from Gaurikund (93 km from Rishikesh).

GMVN, or Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam provides budget stays with a range of hotels, bungalows, and tourist rental houses in Uttarakhand. Hotels are also available by GMVN on the routes of Chardham Yatra in serene locations.

Food has not much variety and is basic but healthy. You will only get vegetarian food with no onions and garlic, especially in the vicinity of the temples, particularly Yamunotri. You will find cauliflower, cabbage, and potatoes in a normal sabzi.

Tips for Chardham Yatra –

• Check the weather booking the tour.
• Be kind to fellow yatris.
• Cover your head and remove your clothes before entering the temple.
• Wear a sturdy pair of shoes for easy walking.
• Avoid wearing sarees as they will cause a hindrance in walking (not necessarily).
• Do not litter on the Chardham Yatra. Keep Mother Nature clean.
• Stay close to other yatris.
• Pack heavy woolen clothes as the weather is cool at all times. Dress in layers.
• Pack moisturizer, hand creams, and sunscreen to protect the skin from sunburn.
• Keep a medical kit with painkillers, some antibiotics, and basic medicines for cough, cold, and fever.
• Keep some snacks with you, like biscuits, glucose, dark chocolates, candies, etc.
• Prepare well for the Chardham Yatra, as it is one of the most difficult yatras in India, and you need to be physically and mentally fit for it.
• Carry extra batteries for your camera; electricity is unavailable in remote areas.
• Avoid coming to this yatra in the monsoon season as it may cause landslides and road blockage.
• If photography is prohibited in some places, respect that. And if not mentioned, always take permission.
• It is best to book your hotels in advance before the opening dates of the temples to avoid the rush of pilgrims and last-minute hassles.
• Alcohol consumption during the yatra should be avoided.
