George’s Watersports offers a unique 4-stop stingray eco tour that goes to the following four spots, all in one tour:

– Stingray City Sandbar – Snorkeling at the Barrier Reef – Starfish Point – Mangrove Forest

2. George’s Watersports – Private Stingray City Tour

This private 4-stop stingray tour goes to the following spots:

This is basically the same as the “ 4-stop stingray eco tour ” mentioned above, except this is a private charter, meaning that you have the entire boat to yourself.

The type of boat is also different, as this charter uses a 29-foot center console boat with twin-200hp outboard engines. This boat can hold up to 10 guests.

Below is a video showing this private 4-stop Stingray City tour:

3. Captain Marvin’s – 2-Stop Stingray & Snorkel Tour

This tour has two stops: Stingray City sandbar and one snorkel spot (either Coral Gardens or the Barrier Reef).

The positive aspect of this tour is that it is slightly cheaper than other similar tours. However, group sizes can be relatively large with the potential for crowds.

4. Moby Dick Tours – Stingray & Snorkel Tour

Picture of man holding a stingray

This tour is similar to number three above. It is two stops, going to both Stingray City sandbar and then snorkeling at the Barrier Reef.

This tour is usually occupied with cruise ship passengers, meaning that it is more likely to be crowded compared to other companies that take smaller groups. However, this tour could be a good choice if you are visiting Grand Cayman on a cruise as it will likely depart at a time that is receptive to cruise schedules.

5. Frank’s Watersports – Stingray City Tour

image of women holding a stingray

Frank’s Watersports offers a 2.5 hour long Stingray City tour.

This tour can accommodate both cruise ship and hotel guests. This company has been operating for over 40 years, so they have a lot of experience in the industry.

6. Anchor Tours – Stingray & Snorkel

picture of boat

Anchor Tours is a company in Grand Cayman that offers Stingray City tours.

This company has a larger boat and takes larger groups.

7. Ebanks Watersports – Jet Ski Stingray & Snorkel Tour

Picture of people and jet skis at Stingray City sandbar

This 2.5 hour tour is designed for people who like adventure. You take a jet ski to Stingray City sandbar and also to the Barrier Reef to snorkel.

This tour has a much higher chance of cancellation if the weather is rough, compared to regular Stingray City tours that operate on larger boats. Also, if you have back problems, then this tour is not a good idea.

8. Get Bent Charters – Private Stingray Tour

picture of boats at Stingray City sandbar

“Get Bent Charters” offers private Stingray City tours.

They can accommodate up to 12 guests on their boat. Typical length of their charters are between 4 to 6 hours. You can also add snorkeling to this trip.

9. Fat Fish Adventures – Jet Ski Stingray, Snorkel & Mangrove Tour

picture of a jet ski on a beach

Fat Fish Adventures offers this three stop tour that goes to Stingray City sandbar, snorkeling at the Barrier Reef, and the mangroves.

This is a great excursion for thrill seekers, but this tour is not recommended for people that have back issues or disabilities. Also, there is a much higher chance of cancellation since this tour operates with jet skis, which cannot handle rough waves, meaning that if it is too windy (too rough), then the tour will be cancelled.

10. Nick’s Private Charter – Stingray & Snorkel Tour

picture of people on a boat

Nick’s Private Charter offers private trips to Stingray City.

This is a good company for smaller groups that want a more private experience away from the crowds.

11. Happy Day Charters – Private Stingray City Tour

picture of boat

Happy Day Charters specialises in offering private tours to Stingray City in Grand Cayman.

Their boat is about 30 feet in length, which is perfect for groups of 5 to 8 people. Since they offer private tours, you can customise your experience, by adding other stops to the trip such as snorkeling or Starfish Point.

12. Red Sail Sports – Catamaran Stingray Tour

catamaran boat at Stingray City

Red Sail Sports offers a unique tour that goes to Stingray City sandbar using a “ catamaran ” sail boat.

Catamarans are very spacious, however, they are quite slow, so you end up spending more time getting to the destination, than actually being at the destination.

This tour takes about 40 people per trip, so it isn’t the best option for people that are looking for a small group excursion.

13. Cayman Turtle Divers – Dive At “Deep” Stingray City

woman scuba diving with stingray

Technically there are two different Stingray Cities.

There is the regular “Stingray City sandbar”, which is the main location that 99% of people go to. This is a shallow sandbar in the sea which you can stand at, since the water is only 2 to 3 feet deep.

Then there is the “Deep Stingray City”, which is about a mile away from the sandbar, and is about 12 feet in depth, meaning that you cannot stand there. Cayman Turtle Divers does a scuba diving tour to the “Deep Stingray City”. You can feed and dive with the stingrays underwater. This adventure is only for people who are certified scuba divers. If you want to simply snorkel, then it’s better to book a regular “Stingray City sandbar” tour, as most of those tours include a snorkel stop at the Barrier Reef.

14. Rowan Watersports – Private Stingray City Trip

picture of boat in sea

Rowan Watersports has a large 45-foot boat that you can rent to Stingray City.

Their crew is experienced and professional. This company is a good choice for largers groups who want to avoid the crowds.

15. The Sweet Spot – Guided Jet Ski Stingray Tour

two people on a jet ski at Stingray City

“The Sweet Spot” is a tour company that operates from the Kaibo area in Grand Cayman. If you are a tourist staying on the East side of Grand Cayman, then this may be a more convenient location for you (compared to driving to the west side of the island).

This tour takes you to both Stingray City sandbar and snorkeling at the Barrier Reef, via jet ski. This is a guided tour, meaning that you will have an experienced tour guide to lead you throughout.

This tour is not recommended for people with back problems or disabilities.

How much does it cost to go to Stingray City in Grand Cayman?

The cost can vary between $100 USD per person to $150 USD per person. It depends on the tour company that you go with, and what type of tour you do.

Is Stingray City suitable for kids?

Stingray City is fine for kids that are 3 years or older. If you have kids that are under 3 years, then it is probably too hot and rough for them.

How many people go to Stingray City a day?

It depends on the time of year. In the busy months, there can be over two-thousand people going to Stingray City in a single day. In the slower months, it may only be a few hundred people each day.

Final Thoughts

There are many companies that you can choose to go to Stingray City with.

All of the companies on this list are great choices, but the best overall experience is the “ 4-stop stingray eco tour ” by “ George’s Watersports “. This 4-stop stingray eco tour shows you the best parts of Grand Cayman, all in a single tour, giving you more value for your money.

17 Best Grand Cayman Stingray City Tours in 2024 (Review)

Caribbean Uncovered Privacy Policy

Ready for the trip of a lifetime on a Grand Cayman Stingray City tour? If you’re planning a trip to Grand Cayman, you’ve probably heard of Stingray City! It’s one of the most popular things to do in the Cayman Islands, and I would highly suggest joining in on the fun!

My picks: Best Grand Cayman Stingray City Tour

Snorkeler in the water on a Grand Cayman Stingray City Tour

I personally took this Stingray City tour with Captain Bryan as a Grand Cayman cruise port tour.

Captain Bryan was so nice, and even accommodating when the cruise ships were backed up (which is a common issue in GC!) So, whether you’re stopping in GCI for a cruise or staying on the island, I’d highly recommend booking this tour !

A van took us to the dock where we loaded onto a beautiful two story boat. The group was a perfect size . I saw some boats that were packed to the brim. We had plenty of space and it was a comfortable ride.

The trip out to the reef takes about 20 minutes. The reef was my favorite part; hopping in the clear water and getting to see the most beautiful coral reefs and schools of fish ever. We even saw stingrays (before we went to Stingray City). It was cool watching the rays swimming in deeper water in a more natural habitat.

Then, we were off to Stingray City! It’s crowded, but there was plenty of space to hop in and make some stingray friends. The three guides on our tour were SO gentle with the rays; they educated us before getting in . I felt fully comfortable jumping in the water.

One of the guides showed me how to feed the stingray (it was weird). I even held and kissed one of them!

Last, we headed to Starfish Point. The guides made sure we knew not to take the starfish out of the water. There’s a little floating restaurant here for beer and snacks, which was cool.

Overall, I can’t recommend this tour enough. Definitely book with Captain Bryan !

Best Grand Cayman Stingray City Tours FAQ

If you’re nervous about visiting Grand Cayman’s Stingray City, don’t worry! Here are answers to all the frequently asked questions so you can educate yourself before booking a tour.

Is Stingray City safe?

There’s always a risk when interacting with wild animals. However, visiting Stingray City is safe . In general, they are docile and used to being around humans every day on this sandbar.

They tend to sting if you step on their stingers . Keeping your feet in the sand will help you avoid stepping on them.

The most important thing to remember is to treat their environment with respect.

One of my guides, who clearly loved his job, said something that stuck with me before we got in the water at Stingray City:

“You show them love, they show you love.”

Reliable Stingray City tours should include knowledgeable guides that will educate you on staying safe in the shallow waters with the rays.

How much does it cost to go to Stingray City?

The average group tours range from $65-$75. Most tours to Stingray City include a snorkeling stop as well. If you prefer to opt for a private charter, they can range from $600-$800, or more depending on the group size and itinerary.

Do people get stung at Stingray City?

Of course! It’s not common, but if you step on a stingray’s stinger or aggrevate them, they will, of course, use their defense system.

Keeping your feet dug in the sand or floating above the water is the best way to avoid stepping on them. I personally saw someone accidentally step on a stinger and it gave her a little sting on the leg. It startled her, but she was fine.

Can you go to Stingray City on your own?

Your guide to exploring the world famous Stingray City attraction in Grand Cayman: learn about the stingrays, find tours to book, and get insider tips.

One of the most famous attractions in Grand Cayman, Stingray City is an absolute “must-do” for any visitor to Cayman and is often described as the experience of a lifetime. Stingray City is home to approximately 90 Southern Stingrays. These wild, gentle and graceful creatures roam free in the North Sound, a 35 square mile area of ocean protected by the reef. Even the most seasoned traveller will be enchanted by these beautiful animals.

Stingray City & The Sandbar

There are in fact two separate sites: Stingray City lies in 12 feet of water, so is ideal for snorkellers and divers; indeed, it is often billed as the best 12 foot dive in the world. Stingray City Sandbar is where the majority of visitors are taken. Here the water is just 2-4 feet deep, so even non-swimmers can safely stand in the shallow water, surrounded by stingrays. The sandbar is suitable for all ages and offers the best photo opportunities.

In the past, local fishermen would anchor their boats in the calm shallow water inside the reef while they gutted their catch and threw scraps overboard. Over time, Southern Stingrays came to realise there were free daily meals in certain spots of the North Sound and so they returned day after day. Today, dozens of rays continue to visit the two sites, although nowadays it is mostly divemasters and boat captains who feed them squid.

Southern Stingrays are large creatures, their wingspans can reach two metres across, however, males are noticeably smaller than females. Their wings are soft and silky and feel like velvet as they brush past you. Stingrays are incredibly gentle animals and their instinct is to flee from danger. Their poisonous sting in their tail is only used for defensive purposes, mainly against sharks, which are their only predators in the open water outside the reef.

What to Expect

When you reach Stingray City your crew will explain how to interact with the rays and put you at ease. The rays love to be petted and you will even get the chance to feed them their favourite dish: squid. After the rays get a whiff of the squid and swim towards you, it can feel intimidating, but as they vacuum it off your hand (remember to keep your thumbs tucked in) you’ll fall in love with this amazing experience and will not want to leave the water! You may even be tempted to give your favourite stingray a kiss – if you do, you will be rewarded with seven years of good luck!

Safety note: Please respect the animals and note that lifting the stingrays out of the water is seriously discouraged. Wearing fins is prohibited and when in the water you should practice the “Stingray Shuffle”, to avoid stepping on any sleeping rays.

Plan Your Trip

Stingray City tours are usually around three hours. You can choose from group charters, which are a cost effective option, or a private charter which is a great way to spend the day with family and friends.

Insider Tip

Stingray City Sandbar can get quite busy especially when there are a lot of cruise ships in port. If you are planning to visit during the week we recommend going after 3pm in order to miss the crowds, as passengers head back to their ships around 2pm. As cruise ships rarely come to Cayman on the weekends it is less busy.

Trips are often combined with a snorkelling stop at Coral Gardens, Starfish Point and lunch at either Kaibo or Rum Point. Some operators offer lunch on-board, and during Conch season (November to April), the crew will dive for conch and serve this Cayman delicacy on-board.

What is Stingray City

Stingray City is a series of shallow sandbars found in the North Sound of Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. It is a tourist attraction, where southern stingrays are found in abundance and visitors can pet and interact with the animals.

Stingray City History

It may be that stingrays began gathering in the area decades ago when fisherman returning from an excursion, navigated behind a reef into the sound, and cleaned their fish in the calm water of the shallows and sandbar area. The fish guts and squid were thrown overboard and the stingrays eventually congregated to feast there. Soon the stingrays associated the sound of a boat engine with food. As this practice turned into a tradition, divers realized that the stingrays could be fed by hand.

Today, tour and excursion boats, along with private watercraft, gather at Stingray City in large numbers. There is a wide variety of companies that offer Stingray City excursions, which all have their own unique features. Passengers disembark and enter the chest-high water to interact with the stingrays. The boats’ proprietors bring along with them pails of chunked-up squid meat, which they dispense by hand to the animals, thus attracting dozens of the creatures to the feeding spot. Visitors can visit Stingray City and pet stingrays, while standing in only 3 feet of water. There are however growing concerns about alterations in behaviour, feeding patterns and general ecology of these rays, when compared to rays not receiving supplemental nutrition.

UPDATE: 2023/08/04 07:39 EST BY BARRY JUMA

Things To Do In Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman is one of the best beach destinations in the world, and the list of things to do here is seemingly endless. This article has even more recommendations, with activities like snorkeling and visiting the Cayman Turtle Centre, among others.

Things To Do

Whether someone wants to walk the Seven-Mile Beach or soak in local culture throughout town, Grand Cayman has more than enough to do for vacationers . Keep reading to learn more about this tropical tourist destination.

Explore Grand Cayman's Sealife At Stingray City

One thing that every visitor to Grand Cayman should do is visit the stingrays at Stingray City. This location is 25 miles off Grand Cayman's shore and easily accessible via boat. Many companies on the island run tours to Stingray City for eager adventurers, usually costing $25-$50 per guest.

Cruise ships also offer itineraries for guests wanting to view the stingrays, so there are many ways to get to them. It's worth mentioning that these tours to Stingray City typically take 3–5 hours, so bring water and allow enough time.

This is one of the top-rated things to do in Grand Cayman , so there's plenty to keep the whole group busy during a trip.

  • Address : 32000 SMB Seven Mile Beach Royal Watler Cruise Ship Terminal & Safe Haven Marina Grand Cayman, KY1-1208, Cayman Islands
  • Tour Duration : 3 to 5 hours
  • Tour Price : From $25 per person

Enjoy World-Class Snorkeling At Smith Cove

Another ocean-friendly activity for travelers to Grand Cayman is snorkeling at Smith Cove. This beach is in the South Sound of Grand Cayman, offering plenty of vibrant sights below the water's surface. Because Grand Cayman has clear, blue water, snorkelers can see to the bottom and explore the various fish, reefs, and stingrays nearby.

This beach is often called "Smith Barcadere," so locals may refer to it by that name.

Get Plenty Of Steps In At Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach is one of the most popular destinations in the Cayman Islands. Because of its white sand, crystal clear waters, and wealthy resident, Seven Mile Beach is a premier location on the island.

The beach is home to many of the Caribbean's most luxurious properties, adding to its already illustrious effect.

  • Caribbean Travel Magazine named Seven Mile Beach "The Caribbean's Best Beach" in 2015 , so there is plenty of hype surrounding the pristine location.

Seven Mile Beach is incredibly popular, meaning it may be hard to find a good spot during peak spring and summer break times. Therefore, it is a good idea to arrive before noon to set up a few chairs and whatever else the group needs.

Take An Adventure To Kittiwake Shipwreck & Artificial Reef

For anyone wanting a bit more adventure while in Grand Cayman, exploring the Kittiwake Shipwreck and artificial reef may be worth the boat ride. One thing to note is this diving location is accessible through dive operators, such as Ocean Frontiers, so visitors to the island will need to go through a booking process with local guide companies.

Over the years, the Kittiwake Shipwreck has become a must-experience for divers in the Cayman Islands, so this can become busy during peak travel seasons. Luckily, most companies work together to prevent crowding at the shipwreck site, but it's better to go out early in the day to beat the afternoon diving rush.

Of course, there are plenty of things to do in the Cayman Islands besides scuba diving , but it's a great way to get an adrenaline rush.

Travelers do not need to be experts to check out this shipwreck and reef site. According to local travel websites, the attraction is only 55 feet below the water's surface and is open to divers and snorkelers of all experience levels.

Be Amazed At The Cayman Crystal Caves

Another natural wonder to see while visiting Grand Cayman is the Cayman Crystal Caves. At this attraction, guests can explore a nearby tropical forest & underground caves, plus a souvenir store & restrooms. This is a tourist attraction, meaning there are tickets, guides, and opportunities to grab a gift for people back home.

This is a popular spot on the main island, meaning it might be best to secure tickets before arriving at the crystal caves. Grand Cayman is a world-class travel destination, so there may be large crowds.

Spend A Few Hours At Starfish Point

For guests of Grand Cayman wishing to experience a quiet, secluded, and starfish-filled beach day, Starfish Point is the perfect solution. This location is on the north side of Grand Cayman, often being a top-rated site for people wanting to escape the hustle and bustle.

Visitors can snorkel here, lay in the sand, or swim around the shoreline while being in the company of local sea life.

Relax And Unwind At Governor's Beach

Located within Seven Mile Beach, Governor's Beach is an even more private, luxurious spot to enjoy the Caribbean atmosphere. One of the best parts of this beach is that it's in front of the Governor's home, allowing tourists to see where the politician lives.

Here, people can check out various pop-up souvenir stands and grab food from local vendors.

  • Many people recommend coming here for sunset, which is when the beach is at its best.

Tips For Staying In Grand Cayman

For people headed off the Grand Cayman, there are some things to be aware of. First, tipping is a thing here, so American travelers: treat the wait staff the same as in the United States. Most tourists recommend tipping between 10 and 15 percent at restaurants, bars, hotels, tours, etc.

Many past visitors to Grand Cayman suggest staying on the island's West Side. This is where nicer hotels, attractions, and dining will be located.

Additionally, nearly everything will be closed Sundays. Because this territory is religious, anywhere in the Cayman Islands will be closed on Sundays to adhere to local traditions and church. That said, hotels, restaurants, and other "essentials" should still be open with modified hours on Sunday.

It's also important to realize that the Cayman Islands are expensive . Many people spend thousands of dollars to visit this tropical paradise, so it's a good idea to create a budget beforehand.

Because Grand Cayman is a religious island, establishments may be closed or have modified hours on Sundays. Grabbing food/snacks and essential items before Sunday is a good idea to avoid paying extra at the hotel.
