Kosher Info: Brussels (Bruxelles) has two kosher restaurants, both located in the city’s southern suburbs. There is not much to find in the old historic center, so it’s a roughly 30 minute trek by tram to have a kosher meal.

Gel Tov is an Israeli style eatery offering the usual mix of falafel and schnitzel. They also have a kosher shop and offer catering and Shabbat meals to go.

La Mozzarella is a nice Italian restaurant offering pasta and fish that opened in 2016.

It is always a good idea to call ahead and confirm opening times before you go.

For Shabbat Hospitality, contact the  Chabad . They offered to host us for meals and accommodation, but we opted instead to stay in the city center. They were really nice, and I had good communication with them by e-mail.

Another option is to head over to Antwerp where kosher food abounds. It’s only 45 minutes or so from Brussels by train, and many kosher shops and restaurants are right near the Antwerp train station.  If you’re staying in Brussels for more than a day or two, Antwerp is a must-visit whether you need the food or not.

Chocolate is, of course, a Belgian specialty; but the only brand we were told is definitely kosher is Guylian, which you can also buy internationally. We did manage to find some obscure kosher chocolate in a tiny store in Bruges that happened to have an Israeli hechsher on it, but we never saw it in Brussels.

Another Belgian specialty is beer, including many types of flavored beers. We were never given a definitive answer on the kashruth of these beers, so we stuck to regular, plain beer.

As for the ubiquitous Belgian waffles (sold in stands on nearly every street)…good luck finding kosher ones. Let me know if you do. They smelled incredible — it was torture.

Jewish Info: The Jewish community of Brussels is much smaller than the one in nearby Antwerp, much of it outside the historic center. We did not encounter a lot of it, but there are a few sites in the city center. The Great Synagogue is a lovely Neo-Romanesque structure on Rue de la Regence between the Palais de Justice and the Place Royal. There are also a couple of memorials to the Holocaust and Jewish martyrs. For more information on Jewish life in Brussels, check out the Jewish Virtual History Tour.

Tourist Info: Once a major medieval city, now the de facto capital of Europe, Brussels has a great mix of old and new with some amazing Art Nouveau thrown into the mix. A first stop for any visitor would be the Grand Place, a stunning square surrounded by the city hall and the glittering former guild houses of medieval merchants, where you can also find the tourist office. Every other summer the square is filled with a giant Carpet of Flowers. If I ever go to Brussels again, it’ll be a summer when I can see it. Nearby is the famous “Mannekin Pis,” a hilarious symbol of Brussels as it’s a fountain with a center sculpture of a tiny boy putting out a fire by rather unusual methods. (The title is a hint.)

Up a hill is Place Royal, home of the King’s Palace (open only in summer) and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, which houses both the Museum of Ancient Art and a Modern Art museum.

For Elegant Shopping you can visit the Sablon Squares and Avenue Louise. If you have children with you, you might want to visit Mini-Europe.

One unique museum is the Center for Comic-Strip Art. Belgium is the home of the famous Tintin, and it’s a fun museum housed in a gorgeous Art Nouveau building. Art Nouveau lovers will also love the Museum of Musical Instruments and the Musee Horta.

Interesting. We visited Brussels in 2006 and we had a really rough time with kosher food. We arrived Friday morning with an international kosher travel guide and (long story very short) ended up in two Arab neighborhoods trying to find kosher stores that had been closed for years. Some Israeli groceries saved us, and later, a list of kosher items for next-door Netherlands helped us navigate the supermarket.

The beers, as far as I know (and obviously based on your own level of kashrut), are fine as long as they do not have any flavor additives. So we had a good selection of beers to try and they were mag-ni-fi-cent. We passed on some of the fruity beers since they were obviously brewed with other ingredients and had no local halachic authority to fall back on. We had some chocolate but I can’t recall from where (I wanna know what the name of this store in Brugge is!).

The waffles. Oh the waffles. Please someone make a kosher one. I plead this to the entire Belgian Jewish community. It was a crime being in Belgium and not being able to have one of those waffles. Or the frites for that matter. Waffles and frites . Please.

I got to pray with the local minyan on a Sunday morning at the Great Synagogue, but we had minyan because I was there. It was summer, so who knows, maybe people were out, but I got the feeling that the community was just that small, at least in the city center. We never found any of the local kosher restaurants (without a car, we stuck to the old center), though we did find the enclosed, heavily protected, tucked-away JCC that had an attached restaurant, except they were closed on Sundays. Sigh.

It’s been a few years, and based on the above it seems there’s been a bit more organization geared towards Jewish tourists. Which is good, cause otherwise I would stay in Antwerp and daytrip into Brussels.

Well, Pilpel (which was not that easy to get to either, only because no one could give us decent directions — once we found it we realized it was really simple!) but now it’s closed and we never attempted to try any of the other shops because, as you said, not easy to get to. I’m wondering if I should get a friend of mine who works for the EU in Brussels to just check and see that the kosher places in that area are really there.

I wish I knew the name of the chocolate place in Bruges! We went on an organized day tour and that’s where the guide took us, saying it was an older place with good prices (which from what we could tell was true.)

As for the beer — yeah, I meant that we didn’t know about the kashruth of the *flavored* beers so we stuck to regular, non-flavored beer, which to us was…beer.

I kept a journal when we went but alas, it was stolen a couple days after our return, so I don’t have the names. I’ll check if my wife wrote them down, because we did find kosher chocolates in Brussels for sure. I wanna say Leonidas?

[…] restaurant within a 150 mile radius. That may be slightly overstating the truth (with kosher in Brussels, Belguim about 130+ miles away). Either way, if you’re in the area and wanted to consider visiting […]

In the Leonidis chocolate store they have a book if you request to see it that lists which of their chocolates are kosher. They will hand fill a box for you of the ones you want. Also, the Delhaize market almost next to the Chabad on Rue de Froissart has many kosher items as well as kosher fresh french breads. The Chabad in Brussels is the most wonderful friendly community and every shabbat they host (for free) a full kiddish and lunch. If you need anything or a place for Friday night dinner they will come thru in a pinch. Contact Rabbi Michoel Rosenblum. If you want to do a full shopping excursion while you are staying in Brussels hop on a train and go to Antwerp. Gross Center is a big kosher store that also has a full counter of parev Belgian chocolates. Kleinblatts bakery is the best kosher bakery in Antwerp!

The Jewish Museum of Belgium was conceived almost 30 years ago and aims to introduce the Jewish history, religion and culture as well as encouraging dialogue and open-mindedness. Judaism is an integral part of the life of Belgium. Its heritage is presented through the introduction of the Jewish teachings and lifestyle, each structured by a set of millennial laws and traditions. From birth to death, Jewish life is punctuated by rites of passage accompanied by objects, symbols and celebrations detailed in this museum. Its ‘ Nouvel Espace Contemporain (NEC)’ hosts temporary exhibitions dedicated to art and history, rising to the occasion of highlighting Belgian or international artists who illustrate the plurality of Jewish culture and life.

Jewish Museum of Belgium

Located in the Sablon district of Brussels, the Jewish Museum of Belgium takes a fresh look at Jewish history and culture through exhibitions and activities focusing on sharing, discovery and accessibility for all sectors of the public. Firmly anchored in the present day, it is an artistic and cultural place that is lively, dynamic and multidisciplinary, led by a team that values openness, boldness and modernity, and whose goal is to promote a knowledge and understanding of Jewish history, religion and culture. Through its three principal missions, namely the preservation of Jewish heritage in Belgium, temporary exhibitions reflecting topical subjects and educational activities for school groups, the team is gradually constructing the public face of the New Museum that will open its doors by 2025. Pending the start of work, visitors can discover a selection of the permanent collection as well as several temporary exhibitions in two buildings covering a total area of five floors. At the same time, the Museum organises a wide range of activities such as conferences, concerts, workshops and literary evenings.

Popular Places In Belgium

Are you looking for kosher eatery or jewish poi near you, about belgium.

Belgium, a country in Western Europe, is known for medieval towns, Renaissance architecture and as headquarters of the European Union and NATO. The country has distinctive regions including Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north, French-speaking Wallonia to the south and a German-speaking community to the east. The bilingual capital, Brussels, has ornate guildhalls at Grand-Place and elegant art-nouveau buildings. The name 'Belgium' is derived from Gallia Belgica, a Roman province in the northernmost part of Gaul that before Roman invasion in 100 BC, was inhabited by the Belgae, a mix of Celtic and Germanic peoples. In 1830, the Belgian Revolution led to the separation of the Southern Provinces from the Netherlands and to the establishment of a Catholic and bourgeois, officially French-speaking and neutral, independent Belgium under a provisional government and a national congress. Tourism in Belgium is one of Belgium's industries. Its accessibility from elsewhere in Europe makes it a popular tourist destination. Much of the tourism industry is located either on the heavily developed coastline or in the Ardennes. Brussels and the Flemish cities of Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven and Mechelen, the Flemish Cities of Art, attract many cultural tourists. Much tourism in Brussels is business tourism.

The Best Of Belgium

Are you a belgium kosher establishment or tour operator, jewish history, poi & kosher establishments in belgium.

The Belgian Jewish community currently numbers around 42,000 (out of a total population of 10.5 million), most of whom live either in Brussels or Antwerp, the two largest cities. Jews arrived in what is today Belgium when the Romans first settled the land over 2,000 years ago. In the 15th and 16th centuries, a large number of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain also moved to the Low Countries. After 1713, Austrian rule in Belgium promoted a more open Jewish society, and there was also some Ashkenazi immigration. The status of Jews in Belgium improved under French and Dutch rule as well. In 1831, Belgium became an independent kingdom. Whereas Jews in the mainly French-speaking capital Brussels are mostly secular, the Dutch-speaking port city of Antwerp has Europe’s largest Hasidic community, including followers of the traditions of Belz, Ger, Czortkow, Lubavitch, Satmar and Vishnitz. Belgium has 45 active synagogues, 30 of which, all Orthodox, are in Antwerp. Brussels has more than 10 synagogues, including two Reform congregations – one of them English speaking – and three Sephardic synagogues. Whereas Antwerp has an abundance of kosher restaurants, food stores, and Jewish bookshops, such facilities are relatively sparse in Brussels, although there are two well attended community centres. A Jewish Museum in central Brussels informs visitors about the history of Belgian Jewry. The communities of Brussels (15,000) and Antwerp (15,000) are the main centers of Belgian Jewry. Significantly smaller communities are located in Arlon, Liege, Mons, Ostende, Charleroi, and Ghent. Total Jewish population: 30,000 Jews

Belgium Experience

Suitable for Family, Group, Senior

From the charming old town of Bruges to the vibrant city of Brussels, Belgium is one of the most interesting countries in Europe to explore for Jewish travel. It’s the headquarters of the European Parliament, the center of the European Union, and home to the fourth-largest Jewish community in Europe, famous for their involvement in the diamond and fur industries.

45% of Belgian Jews were deported to concentration camps during World War II, and Belgium was the only country where a transport was stopped and deportees had a chance to escape.

Visit the Belgian Jewish Museum to see religious objects from the 16th century or see the National Monument to the Jewish Martyrs of Belgium. The Great Synagogue of Europe, completed in 1878, is also an important stop on a Jewish tour of Belgium. There’s so much to explore, and all while enjoying the beer, chocolate, and other treats that Belgium is famous for.
