The 2022 Tour of Britain kicks off on Sunday, with riders racing from Aberdeen to the Isle of Wight over eight gruelling days.

Tom Pidcock, who won Olympic gold for Great Britain in the cross-country mountain biking in 2020, is among the hopefuls. He will be riding for Ineos Grenadiers.

Among those challenging him are Israel-Premier Tech’s Dylan Teuns, a fierce Belgian rider making his debut for his new team, and Austrian national champion Felix Großschartner, representing Bora–Hansgrohe.

Here is the full route and schedule for the race.

When is the 2022 Tour of Britain?

The Tour of Britain takes place over eight days, with one stage per day.

  • Stage eight, Sunday 11th September – 10.45am to 3.45pm, highlights at 8pm

What is the full route?

Stage one – Aberdeen to Glenshee Ski Centre (181.3km)

Route description: Not only will this stage feature an entirely new route compared to last year’s finale in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, it will also include the first ever opening day summit finish in modern race history. The Old Military Road climb from Auchallater to Glenshee Ski Centre measures 9.1km long, with the final five kilometres averaging a gradient of 4.8 per cent.

Stage two – Hawick to Duns (175.2km)

Route description: Hawick, famous for its knitwear and the first whisky distillery to open in the region since 1837, will be the starting point of stage two. The race’s ninth visit to the Borders will feature a mix of roads old and new to the event, before a first-ever finish in Duns. The stage winner will be crowned in the shadow of the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum, which celebrates the two-time Formula 1 world champion who lived nearby.

map

Stage three – Durham to Sunderland (163.6km)

Route description: History will be made when riders roll out in the shadow of the city’s famous cathedral: Durham has never previously hosted a stage start or finish in a professional edition of the Tour of Britain. Stage three’s route will initially head west, taking the peloton through the North Pennines AONB, before heading back through County Durham and into Sunderland. The route will weave past some of the city’s beautiful green spaces and through communities on its approach to the finish line outside of Sunderland’s new City Hall, which forms part of a £500m development in the city.

Stage four – Redcar to Duncombe Park, Helmsley (149.5km)

Route description: The start will be the first time the borough of Redcar and Cleveland has hosted the Tour of Britain, while the finish marks the race’s return to North Yorkshire in 13 years. Popular seaside towns such as Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Whitby will be raced through before the route heads into the North York Moors National Park. The unforgiving final 30km of this 149.5km stage feature the climbs of Carlton Bank (2km long, 9.8 per cent average gradient) and Newgate Bank (2km long, 6 per cent average gradient) before descending into the finish at Duncombe Park, one of Yorkshire’s finest historic houses and estates.

Teams taking part Bardiani CSF Faizanè Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB BORA-Hansgrohe  Cara Rural – Seguros RGA Global 6 Cycling  Great Britain Cycling Team  Human Powered Health  Ineos Grenadiers Israel-Premier Tech  Movistar Team  Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling  Saint Piran  Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise  Team DSM Team Qhubeka  Trinity Racing  Uno-X Pro Cycling Team  Wiv SunGod

Stage five – West Bridgford to Mansfield (186.8km)

Route description: Stage five will start and finish in the same places – West Bridgford and Mansfield – as it did four years ago, albeit with a different route that takes in Cotgrave, Gedling, Southwell, Retford and Worksop. Riders will then head into Mansfield via Clumber Park and Sherwood Forest. This will be the only stage of the 2022 Tour with less than 2,000m of climbing.

Stage six – Tewkesbury to Gloucester (170.9km)

Route description: With the start and finish locations separated by a little over 10 miles, fans will easily be able to attend both on race day, which will further add to the atmosphere at this free-to-watch sporting spectacle. Stage six’s route will head into the Cotswolds before approaching the finish by the historic Gloucester Docks via South Gloucestershire.

Stage seven – West Bay to Ferndown (175.9km)

Route description: Dorset’s natural beauty – including the Jurassic Coast Unesco World Heritage Site that runs through the county – will be showcased to the world as riders travel from West Bay, known for its striking golden cliffs, to Ferndown on Saturday 10 September. Stage seven will run parallel with the West Dorset Heritage coast before passing through Dorchester, West Lulworth and Corfe Castle. The route heads inland towards Wareham, Milton Abbas and Wimborne Minster and loops round into the heart of Ferndown town centre.

Stage eight – Ryde to The Needles, Isle of Wight (148.9km)

Route description: Stage eight promises unforgettable for riders and fans alike, owing to the spectacular 148.9km route from Ryde to The Needles. Not only will the route showcase the island to a worldwide TV audience – its county town of Newport, as well as the popular tourist locations of Cowes, Sandown, Shanklin, Totland, Ventnor and Yarmouth all feature – fans will be able to catch the race in multiple locations owing to the way it loops around the Isle. The final 20km will take the peloton along the stunning Military Road, which offers breathtaking panoramic views out across the English Channel, towards The Needles Landmark Attraction. This year’s race culminates with a 2km climb up to Tennyson Down, the final 400m of which average a gradient of 9.6 per cent, making it the toughest ending to any Tour of Britain in modern history.

Tour of Britain 2024 Stages and Routes

The first details of the 20th edition of the modern race will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Following the cancellation of the 2021 edition owing to the death of Her Majesty The Queen, organisers SweetSpot will continue to work with the local authorities who were due to host stages to explore opportunities to host the race in the future.

One of the most highly anticipated professional cycling events in the United Kingdom is all set to kick off in the first week of September. The Tour of Britain is gearing up for its 2021 edition, which will also be the 14th edition since the reincarnation of the event with several changes in 2004. The cycling Tour of Britain route was unveiled back in February 2021 with the addition of a time trial stage. It now means that the Tour of Britain 2021 has nine stages compared to 8 in recent years. Even those eight Tour of Britain stages were a bump up from the five stages the event used to have in 2004.

The Surprising Route

Tour of Britain 2021 race director Mick Bennett unveiled the cycling Tour of Britain route in the hope of keeping up with the recent momentum of popularity gathered by the event. Several changes to the Tour of Britain stages over the last few years have made it more competitive and brought it to the levels of Tour de France or Vuelta a Espana. Attracting the best riders in the world to the United Kingdom is one of the sole objectives of this event.

George Square in Glasgow will form the location for the start of the 2021 edition. The nine Tour of Britain stages will see riders cover just over 1300 km from September 4 to September 11. This will certainly take its toll on the riders, but there is a consensus that the 2021 edition will be slightly easier than the 2015 edition. Furthermore, there is an opportunity for riders to make use of every Tour of Britain stage to prepare well for the upcoming World Championships in Qatar. This reason alone is expected to increase general interest amongst riders in the competition.

Tour of Britain 2021 – Challenging Parts

The upcoming competition brings a lot of aspects like challenging races and sprint finishes. These are aspects which will have a lot to do at the World Championships. Glasgow last played host to the start of the event back in 2008. It provides a sprint finish to the Castle Douglas since there is no prominent climbs along the way. Stage two goes through various sections of the enchanting Lake District, which may not offer anything out of the blue for experienced riders. The Lake District has been a standard fare of the Tour of Britain in recent years. Even though much of the route will be familiar, riders will have to be prepared for the climb from Ambleside towards the end of the stage.

Stage three at the Congleton marks the beginning of the tough stages. As expected, the stage four takes its toll since it is the longest. As the competition enters into the final stages, riders go through Wales and Bath before a time trial event near London. The final stage will be a replica of the final stage in 2015, which received a lot of rave reviews. Each stage is tough and this will be on the minds of punters when it comes to Tour of Britain bet online.

The growing popularity of the event has also resulted in a number of punters looking for good Tour of Britain bet online opportunities. These opportunities are presented because of the Tour of Britain 2021 odds, which are once again leaning towards the favourites like Alberto Contador. Even though it makes a lot of sense to make an early judgement, Tour of Britain 2021 odds at a later stage will provide a more accurate picture about the favourites for the title.

Tour of Britain 2022 teams | What teams are competing?

The squads and stars aiming for Aberdeen

Ian Forsyth/Getty Images

The Tour of Britain is ranked 2.Pro on the UCI calendar. The ‘2’ relates to it being a stage race, while the ‘Pro’ means it’s one level below the top-level WorldTour.

There are 18 teams in the men’s WorldTour and, while teams aren’t obliged to ride races at the Tour of Britain’s level, up to 70 per cent of such a race’s start list can consist of WorldTour teams.

Whether a WorldTour team enters depends on several factors, including how relevant the race is to its sponsors and competing events.

This year sees five WorldTour teams, including Ineos Grenadiers and Movistar, taking on the undulating 2022 Tour of Britain route .

The remaining 30 per cent or so is made up of ProTeams, Continental and, sometimes, a GB national team. There are a host of ProTeams such as Bardiani-CSF-Faizone and UNO-X and Continental Teams including WiV SunGod and Ribble Weldtite.

UK in 'ongoing discussions' to host Tour de France Grand Départ in 2027

British Cycling and UK Sport supporting bid to bring race back

A union jack flag at the Tour de France

The UK is currently in discussions with the Tour de France to host a Grand Départ in 2027, British Cycling has confirmed.

UK Sport, the government body responsible for investing in sport in the country, has made contact with Tour organiser ASO with an ambition to stage a return of the French Grand Tour. Britain last hosted the race in 2014, when it started in Leeds, Yorkshire; it also previously began in London in 2007.

In a statement issued to Cycling Weekly , British Cycling revealed it is currently supporting a British bid to host the Tour de France.

"TdF27 [Tour de France 2027] was identified as a hosting target by UK Sport earlier in the year and BC have been supporting the ongoing discussions," a British Cycling spokesperson said.

"The Tour de France does not have a formal bid process or deadline and any decisions on future international hosts of the Grand Départ is at the sole discretion of ASO."

Earlier this week, British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton told City AM that he was "fully supportive" of another Tour de France Grand Départ in the UK.

"The Tour de France would have a hugely positive impact, it would create incredible visibility and it would allow all partners to deliver more social value over a period of time," Dutton said.

"Off the back of the Grand Départ in 2014, which I was personally involved in, and seeing the millions of people come to the side of the road and the reach across the geography of the UK, we are fully supportive [of its return]."

Dutton added that the cost is "still in the process of being worked through", but said the country would be "definitely within our means" to host the Tour.

Plans for an exact start location in the UK are yet to be specified.

It was previously understood that UK Sport hoped to welcome the race in 2026, before abandoning the bid . The Tour will instead start in Barcelona that year.

"UK Sport is currently undertaking feasibility work into the costs, impacts and technical requirements of hosting a future Tour de France in the UK," a spokesperson for UK Sport said. "The Tour de France is one of the largest global sporting events that could be hosted in the UK and is a key hosting target for us. It supports our ambition to secure a programme of major sporting events into the 2030’s that will generate impact across the cities and regions of the UK and allow our World Class events sector to survive.

"The Tour de France does not have a formal bid process or deadline and any decisions on future international hosts of the Grand Depart is at the sole discretion of the organiser."

The Tour has followed a trend in recent editions of foreign Grands Départs . This year's event began in Florence, Italy, while the race started in Spain in 2023 and Denmark in 2022. Next year, the Tour will open in Lille , beginning in France for the first time since 2021, before heading abroad again in 2026, to Barcelona .

ASO was contacted for this piece.

British Cycling Announces 2022 National Road Series Calendar

British cycling is pleased to today announce the dates and venues for the 2022 national road series and national circuit series, beginning where the 2021 season ended with the rapha lincoln grand prix on sunday 8 may..

Contested over eight rounds for women and seven rounds for men, the National Road Series will welcome back the Stockton Cycling Festival Grand Prix and the Tour of the Reservoir, which were unable to take place in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Riders will also make a welcome return to the Isle of Man in July for the Manx International Stage Race, including a first women’s national series event on the island. The four-stage race will include a time-trial, two kermesses and a road stage.

Following a successful debut in 2021 the Ilkley Cycle Races will once again feature in the men’s and women’s National Circuit Series, while races in Barnsle and Colne will all return following cancellations in 2021. Both the men’s and women’s series will begin in Otley, with the Otley Women’s Grand Prix and Property Development Men’s Otley Grand Prix.

As has been the case since 2017, equal prize money will be on offer in both the men’s and women’s series, and further details on the 2022 national championships for road, time-trial and circuit will be published in due course.

British Cycling Head of Sport and Major Events, Jonathan Day, said:

“I’m really pleased to publish the 2022 road and circuit calendars today, and want to express our deepest thanks to the event organisers for their ongoing support through what has been a really challenging period for the sport.

“It’s brilliant news that we’re able to welcome back a number of races which haven’t been able to take place in the past two seasons, including some mainstays of the calendar, and we’re determined to give our teams and riders the best possible platform to develop and grow from.”

Winner of the 2021 women’s National Road Series for TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank, Abi Smith, said:

“Winning the National Road Series was a big stepping stone for me this year - it has given me confidence, experience and tactical knowledge, which will enable me to progress my career in years to come. As I have found, having a well-supported and well organised National Series is particularly important for the young and upcoming riders to be able to learn and race at this level.

“I don't know exactly what my calendar looks like for next year, but I am very excited about being a part of EF Education-Tibco-SVB, and jump to the next step, which is learning how to function in a professional road team and gain experience at World Tour level. It will be a steep learning curve but I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

Winner of the 2021 men’s National Road Series for Canyon dhb SunGod, Jacob Scott, said:

“The condensed national series saw some really aggressive racing within the British scene this year, and the courses and racing provided me with a great platform and mix of terrains to go on and take the series win. For 2022, I’m glad to see the British series get back to its normal series length, with a mix of some new and original courses.”

Brits on Tour – the eight British riders taking on the Tour de France

Former Tour winners Froome and Thomas headline the UK's representatives in France

Froome Thomas Pidcock Tour de France 2022 Brits on Tour

Riders from all around the world will be rolling down the start ramp in Copenhagen to kick off the 2022 Tour de France on Friday, with the peloton consisting of men from nations as varied as Norway, New Zealand, Colombia, and South Africa.

There are, of course, plenty of riders from the traditional cycling powerhouses of central Europe taking the start, while nine Australians and now – with the late addition of Canadian Guillaume Boivin (Israel-Premier Tech) to the start list – 11 North Americans will also be racing. There's also a small British representation at the race, with eight riders taking the start in Denmark this week.

It's down a few riders on last year, when a record 10 British riders started the race, equal with 2015, with big names such as Mark Cavendish , Simon Yates, Tao Geoghegan Hart, and Hugh Carthy not lining up.

There are still two former winners racing the Tour this year, though, as well as another GC contender, stage hunters, and domestiques. Read on to get the full rundown of the British riders starting the 2022 Tour de France.

Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers)

VADUZ LIECHTENSTEIN JUNE 19 Geraint Thomas of The United Kingdom and Team INEOS Grenadiers celebrates winning the yellow leader jersey on the podium ceremony after the 85th Tour de Suisse 2022 Stage 8 a 256km individual time trial stage from Vaduz to Vaduz tourdesuisse2022 WorldTour ITT on June 19 2022 in Vaduz Liechtenstein Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

At the age of 36, 2018 winner Thomas is back as Ineos Grenadiers co-leader this time around and a real podium contender after winning the Tour de Suisse earlier this month.

There he got the better of riders like Sergio Higuita, Jakob Fuglsang, and Remco Evenepoel, during what was really the first week of the season where he has shown his top form.

Of the top two favourites – Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič – he hasn't been in a head-to-head battle with either since taking third at the 2019 Tour de Romandie, which Roglič won. Even if he was impressive in Switzerland, logically he's behind the pair in the pecking order until he can prove otherwise.

Ineos do have strength in numbers, though, with Dani Martínez and Adam Yates (see below) co-leading the squad with Thomas. While a leadership 'trident' hasn't worked out for other teams in the past – see Movistar's recent history – Ineos going on the offensive in the mountains could spring a surprise.

Chris Froome (Israel-Premier Tech)

British Chris Froome of IsraelPremier Tech pictured at the start of the first stage of the Criterium du Dauphine cycling race 192 km between La VoultesurRhone and Beauchastel France Sunday 05 June 2022 BELGA PHOTO DAVID STOCKMAN Photo by DAVID STOCKMAN BELGA MAG Belga via AFP Photo by DAVID STOCKMANBELGA MAGAFP via Getty Images

Four-time champion and Thomas' old teammate Froome has had a very tough time of it since his major crash at the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné. It's been a battle to get back to anything like the dominant form he showed before that career-threatening accident, but things are looking up.

A month ago, at the Classic Alpes-Maritimes he achieved his best result since 2019 with an 11th place, even if it was four minutes down on teammates Fuglsang and Michael Woods, who took the one-two.

The 37-year-old was hit by illness at the Dauphiné, so we don't have much else to go on and no real idea of what he's capable of at the Tour. A return to GC contention is a pipe dream but expect him to be seen working for Fuglsang and Woods and taking his own chances in the break if he has the form.

Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers)

KUSNACHT SWITZERLAND JUNE 12 Adam Yates of United Kingdom and Team INEOS Grenadiers competes during the 85th Tour de Suisse 2022 Stage 1 a 1776km stage from Kusnacht to Kusnacht 679m ourdesuisse2022 WorldTour on June 12 2022 in Kusnacht Switzerland Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

Yates is part two of the Ineos leadership trio, the 29-year-old returning to the Tour after missing last year's race. His form is in question after he admitted that he struggled with COVID-19 after testing positive for the virus at the Tour de Suisse.

In a pre-Tour press conference, he said that he didn't lose much form during his illness but would have to wait for the opening time trial in Copenhagen to find out how he's going.

As such, it's hard to make any major proclamations about what Yates can do in France. He started the season well with second at the UAE Tour and fourth at Paris-Nice, though both were behind Pogačar and Roglič, and as is the case with Thomas, it's tough to envisage a scenario in which he'll beat them – even if he is in top form from Friday onwards.

Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious)

Ronde van Vlaanderen 2022 - Tour of Flanders - 106th Edition - Antwerp - Oudenaarde 272,5 km - 03/04/2022 - Fred Wright (GBR - Bahrain Victorious) - photo Gregory Van Gansen/SprintCyclingAgency©2022

After making his Tour debut last year in service of Jack Haig, who was forced to abandon on stage 3, Wright returns to the police raid-prone Bahrain Victorious team, again as a domestique for the Australian GC hopeful.

Last October, the 23-year-old was a couple of seconds away from becoming British road champion, and this year he still awaits the first breakthrough win of his three-year career. A seventh place that few expected at the Tour of Flanders is his standout of 2022 so far.

With Haig and Damiano Caruso leading the GC fight and Matej Mohorič and Dylan Teuns set to hunt stages, Wright likely isn't going to get a lot of leeway to go for his own chances during the Tour. He will be a key domestique for the team leaders, though.

Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers)

WAREGEM BELGIUM MARCH 30 Thomas Pidcock of United Kingdom and Team INEOS Grenadiers on third place poses on the podium ceremony after the 76th Dwars Door Vlaanderen 2022 Mens Elite a 1837km one day race from Roeselare to Waregem DDV22 DDVmen WorldTour on March 30 2022 in Waregem Belgium Photo by Luc ClaessenGetty Images

The Olympic mountain bike and world cyclo-cross champion is the only British rider making his Tour de France debut this year. Like teammate Yates, though, he's on the comeback from COVID-19 after catching the virus in Switzerland.

His form, too, is under question, then, but he'll have a chance to grow into the race rather than being 'on it' from day one. Of course, the 22-year-old will be expected to work for Thomas, Yates and Martínez, but there will be opportunities for him and other teammates to fight for their own glory.

Pidcock confirmed in a pre-race interview that he's hoping to "maybe try and win a stage" in addition to working for others. As the squad's lead directeur sportif Steve Cummings told Cyclingnews earlier this week – Pidcock has "a role as a 'free electron', to take his chances where he can."

Connor Swift (Arkéa-Samsic)

KNOKKEHEIST BELGIUM JUNE 16 Connor Swift of United Kingdom and Team Arka Samsic during the team presentation prior to the 91st Baloise Belgium Tour 2022 Stage 2 a 1756km stage from Beveren to KnokkeHeist BaloiseBelgiumTour on June 16 2022 in KnokkeHeist Belgium Photo by Luc ClaessenGetty Images

26-year-old Swift makes his third Tour appearance in a row for French squad Arkéa-Samsic, who he joined back in mid-2019. Since then, he's been working in the sprints for André Greipel and Nacer Bouhanni.

This time he'll be helping out Amaury Capiot and Hugo Hofstetter in the flat finishes, though neither are top favourites for stage wins – Capiot hasn't raced the Tour before while Hofstetter collected a top-four place in 2020.

Swift won't be expected to assist team leaders Nairo Quintana and Warren Barguil in their natural terrain of the high mountains, so should have some leeway to infiltrate the breakaways here and there.

Luke Rowe (Ineos Grenadiers)

MOOSALP SWITZERLAND JUNE 17 Luke Rowe of United Kingdom and Team INEOS Grenadiers leads the peloton during the 85th Tour de Suisse 2022 Stage 6 a 1775km stage from Locarno to Moosalp 2048m ourdesuisse2022 WorldTour on June 17 2022 in Moosalp Switzerland Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

The fourth and final Ineos Grenadiers rider on our list, Luke Rowe is one of the most experienced British riders at the Tour, his seven appearances second only to Thomas' 11.

Unlike the three GC leaders and stage hunters Pidcock and Filippo Ganna, though, Rowe's glory will come when the team wins rather than any personal stage victories. The 32-year-old is the road captain of the squad, helping out on all terrain however he can.

While the Welshman will be expected to be at the service of the team leaders throughout the race, his skills on the cobbles should come in very handy as the team navigates the Paris-Roubaix pavé on stage 5.

Owain Doull (EF Education-EasyPost)

COPENHAGEN DENMARK JUNE 29 A general view of Alberto Bettiol of Italy Stefan Bissegger of Switzerland Johan Esteban Chaves Rubio of Colombia Owain Doull of United Kingdom Ruben Guerreiro of Portugal Mark Padun of Ukraine Neilson Powless of United States Jonas Rutsch of Germany Rigoberto Uran Uran of Colombia and Team EF Education Easypost with special Rapha x Palace Skateboards during the Team Presentation of the 109th Tour de France 2022 at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen City TDF2022 on June 29 2022 in Copenhagen Denmark Photo by Stuart FranklinGetty Images

Rounding out the British Tour selection is a third Welshman, Doull. The 29-year-old transferred from Ineos during the off-season and this July makes his Tour de France debut with his new squad EF Education-EasyPost.

A veteran of the track and an Olympic champion in the Team Pursuit, Doull possesses a quick finish, though is a level below the top sprint contenders like Wout van Aert, Caleb Ewan, and Fabio Jakobsen.

In an eclectic and versatile EF team , he'll be expected to help others, with several of his teammates strong options for a stage win on all different terrain. Doull said he's realising a "childhood dream" this July, and he could make the breakaway a few times himself, too.
