The Flatirons The Flatirons free

These jaw-dropping rock walls flanking Green Mountain have become the symbol of the city, with many Boulder businesses sporting their image as a logo. Flatirons One through Five are the most prominent, but there are also several smaller formations –  with more creative names –  to explore. Altogether, these picturesque slopes are the most popular rock climbing areas around (you can even see markings left by some of the first climbers, dating back to the 1940s, on Number Three). But for those of you who aren't quite comfortable entrusting your life to a harness, you can still take in the Flatirons from one of the area's hiking trails  – recent visitors said there's a trail for every age and skill level.  For information about Flatiron trails, visit the City of Boulder website .

Previous visitors say that no trip to Boulder would be complete without spending time admiring the rocks. But if you plan on hiking, travelers recommend coming prepared: The trails can be steep in places, not to mention slippery. And don't forget your camera  – reviewers said you'll want to capture the stunning views.

Chautauqua Park Chautauqua Park free

Perched on the southwest edge of the city, this tiny extension of Boulder Mountain Park offers some of the city's most photo-worthy vistas. Originally established in the late 1800s as a verdant retreat, this National Historic Landmark now hosts a handful of community events like concerts and festivals. Even when there isn't anything marked on the social calendar, Chautauqua is still a place to go for a breath of fresh air: Numerous paths and gardens await hikers, bikers, picnickers and dog walkers, while more adventurous travelers explore the rugged mountains nearby.

Visitors are blown away by the park's landscape and its facilities, which include lodging, dining and auditoriums. However, some reviewers were less satisfied with the crowds and limited parking. Because of the park's accessible location just minutes from downtown Boulder, Chautauqua sees more visitors than some of the city's other hiking spots like Eldorado Canyon State Park and Flagstaff Mountain . If you can, try to get to the park early before your fellow hikers start clogging the trails.

Pearl Street Mall Pearl Street Mall free

Stretching from Eighth to 20th streets in downtown Boulder, this buzzing thoroughfare is a shopaholic's Yellow Brick Road. Here, you'll find familiar brand names like Urban Outfitters and Patagonia sharing sidewalk space with local boutiques, trendy galleries and laid-back cafes. If you're not much of a shopper, come to Pearl Street for the fabulous dining, entertaining street performances and the prime people-watching.

Recent visitors said the shopping options were a bit underwhelming, but they praised the food selection and bustling atmosphere and said a stroll through this district is a must-do for any first-time Boulder visitors. However, travelers were also quick to point out that this is area is heavily populated with panhandlers.

Boulder Breweries Boulder Breweries free

After you've conquered the Flatirons , what better reward than an ice-cold pint of local Boulder ale? Though Denver is often regarded as Colorado's reigning beer city, Boulder can keep up, offering 20 breweries in its 27.8 square miles. To acquaint yourself with the city's suds, embark on the bike-friendly Boulder Beer Trail (which also includes stops at wineries and distilleries). Or, take the advice of visitors and locals and start your tasting tour at Avery Brewing Co. , beloved for its India pale ale, brewery tours and large patio.

For a bit of history, head to the Boulder Beer Company. Back in 1979, America's 43rd brewing license was issued to two University of Colorado professors, giving them the go-ahead to open Colorado's very first microbrewery, Boulder Beer Company. Stop in for a tall glass of Hazed, an unfiltered dry-hopped ale, or a warm-weather favorite, the Pulp Fusion Blood Orange IPA.

Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory free

No wonder everyone in Boulder seems so relaxed: The city is home to North America's largest producer of herbal tea, which packages and sends more than 8 million tea bags every day. Founded in 1969, Celestial Seasonings has since grown to serve more than 1.6 billion cups of tea (including green, red, white and chai varieties) a year to consumers all over the world.

Recent visitors agree that a tour of the Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory is well worth the time, even if you're more of a coffee person. You'll get the chance to see the entire packaging process, not to mention the Celestial Herb Garden and the popular Mint Room, where the company stores giant bags of spearmint and peppermint tea. (Recent travelers delighted in the chance to see how long they can bear the powerful aromas before they need to step out for some fresh air.) Plus, you'll have the opportunity to sample some of the factory's best-sellers. If you're not already sold, keep in mind that the tour (and the tastings) is completely free.

Eldorado Canyon State Park Eldorado Canyon State Park

Cascading canyon walls, lush pine forests, winding trails ... Eldorado Canyon State Park has much to offer in the way of natural beauty. Its 885 acres provide opportunities to rock climb, kayak, horseback ride and bird-watch, not to mention sightsee. Just don't forget your camera –  recent visitors can't help but rave about the views.

If you're looking for a place to hike, travelers say that the $8 vehicle fee is worth the access to Eldorado Canyon's extensive network of trails. The moderately difficult Rattlesnake Gulch Trail is a favorite, winding 3.6 miles (round trip) along the canyon to the ruins of the 20th-century Crags Hotel. Hikers are also afforded striking views of the Continental Divide from this trail.

Boulder Creek Path Boulder Creek Path free

Ask any Boulder resident for a hiking recommendation and they'll probably point you to the Boulder Creek Path. This 5½-mile-long trail –  completely undisturbed by automobile traffic –  traces Boulder Creek from Boulder Canyon eastward through downtown to the Stazio Ballfields on the eastern fringes of town. On any given day, you'll come across walkers, bikers, rollerbladers and even the occasional kayaker. Compared to other hiking trails in the area, Boulder Creek Path is fairly easy, and if you head from east to west, the second half of your walk will be all downhill.

Many hikers who recently followed the Boulder Creek Path described their experience positively: Travelers said they enjoyed the natural surroundings and marveled at all the different ways that Boulderites take advantage of the path, from dogwalking to yoga. However, some visitors note that parts of the trail have become respites for members of the city's homeless community.

Flagstaff Mountain & Summit Nature Center Flagstaff Mountain & Summit Nature Center free

If you're looking for a hike the whole family can enjoy, aim for the top of Flagstaff Mountain. Rising out of Boulder Mountain Park, Flagstaff Mountain sits about 5 miles southwest of the city. If you're a novice trailblazer, you may find this mountain challenging due its altitude of nearly 7,000 feet. But there are numerous paths to choose from that span a variety of difficulty levels, and kids will enjoy what awaits them at the top of the mountain. Sitting on Flagstaff's summit, the nature center offers interactive exhibits, games and activities that teach children about the area's geography and wildlife. Flagstaff's peak also boasts numerous picnic areas and viewpoints. As for the romantics, the family-owned Flagstaff House Restaurant serves locally praised cuisine with beautiful vistas.

Recent visitors raved about the stunning views, adding that this is a must-do when in Boulder.  If you aren't up for a several-mile uphill hike, you can drive to the summit by following Flagstaff Road (accessible May through October), but previous road-trippers warn that tight turns and steep passes can turn a car ride into an adrenaline rush.

University of Colorado Boulder University of Colorado Boulder free

Even if you're not a prospective student, recent travelers recommend you pay a visit to the beautiful University of Colorado Boulder campus, located just minutes from downtown Boulder. When you're not lounging at Norlin Quadrangle (a designated a National Historic District), learn about the university's history at the CU Heritage Center (housed in Old Main – the first building on campus). Or brush up on your astronomy skills at the Fiske Planetarium.

If you're visiting in the fall, head over to Folsom Field to watch the Colorado Buffaloes take on Pac-12 football rivals (just make sure to pick up some Buffs gear at the University Memorial Center before kickoff). And if you're in Boulder during the summer recess, check out the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. The professional theater company has been celebrating Shakespeare since 1958. The festival runs from June to August and draws crowds of more than 20,000 spectators. You can also check out concerts, plays, recitals and more on the stages of CU Presents, the home of performing arts at the university.

Leanin' Tree Museum of Western Art Leanin' Tree Museum of Western Art free

You don't have to be a hiker, a skier or a rock climber to experience Colorado's scenery. For a more laid-back glimpse at the mountainous landscape, head to the Leanin' Tree Museum of Western Art. This museum houses one of the largest privately owned collections of post-1950s Western-themed artwork. Along Leanin' Tree's walls you'll find everything from action-packed canvases portraying cowboy life to serene landscapes depicting the purple mountains majesty.

Recent visitors highly recommend taking a turn about the Leanin' Tree's sculpture garden, even if you aren't one for gallery-gazing. When you're not admiring the artwork or outdoor sculptures, reviewers suggest you take a free tour of the adjacent greeting card factory. Travelers also advised bringing some money as you'll be tempted to purchase some cards after taking a spin through the production process.

National Center for Atmospheric Research National Center for Atmospheric Research free

Most people consider a conversation about the weather to be a desperate attempt at small talk. But at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, sun, rain, wind and snow are always important topics. At this stunning sandstone building atop Table Mesa –  a landmark some might recognize from Woody Allen's film, "Sleeper" –  scientists study weather-related phenomena such as ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect. On a visit to the center, you can see some of the tools used to conduct experiments, like weather balloons, satellites and even robots. Meanwhile, hands-on exhibits are sure to excite the budding meteorologist in your family. After you've sufficiently toured the complex, get some fresh air along the Walter Orr Roberts Nature and Weather Trail, where you can learn all about Table Mesa's wildlife.

Guided tours of the center are available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between noon and 1 p.m., and recent visitors recommend coming prepared to learn as knowledgeable tour guides are eager to answer your questions. You can also opt for a tablet or cellphone tour; whichever option you choose, travelers highly recommend taking some time to explore on your own before grabbing a snack and enjoying the view from the on-site cafeteria.

14 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Boulder, CO

Written by Carri Wilbanks Updated Dec 23, 2023

Boulder has always prided itself on being unique, but this city, just 45 minutes northwest of Denver, also boasts stunning natural beauty thanks to its Rocky Mountain location.

Boulder residents tend to embrace healthy lifestyles, and when it comes to things to do, the city is definitely focused on outdoor activities, with more than 200 miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as lots of rock climbing opportunities. Boulder is also home to the University of Colorado at Boulder and has a lively student population.

There are two main areas that attract tourists: Downtown is anchored by the pedestrian-only Pearl Street Mall , which is filled with shops, art galleries, and restaurants that also spill out to the surrounding blocks. Farther south on Broadway (one of two main north-south drags through Boulder, the other being 28th Street) is The Hill , where the university is located. It is filled with more restaurants and shops.

However, many of Boulder's top attractions, like The Flatirons and Flagstaff Mountain , are located in the hills and parks surrounding this outdoorsy city.

Plan your sightseeing and find the best places to visit with our list of the top attractions and things to do in Boulder, Colorado.

Pearl Street Mall

Chautauqua park, celestial seasonings tea factory, eldorado canyon state park, university of colorado at boulder, fiske planetarium, flagstaff mountain, mount sanitas hiking trail, valmont bike park, boulder museum of contemporary art, dushanbe teahouse, museum of boulder at tebo center, where to stay in boulder for sightseeing, map of attractions & things to do in boulder, co, boulder, co - climate chart.

Flatirons

Visible from pretty much anywhere in town, Boulder's most distinctive feature is its natural backdrop, the Flatirons, which are a line of five huge, slanted slices of sandstone. One of the most popular rock climbing destinations in the city, the Flatirons area is also home to dozens of hiking trails that take tourists into the surrounding foothills, and one, the Flatirons Vista Trail , that leads right into the rocks.

The best place to begin admiring the Flatirons is the Open Space Mountain Parks area, a beautiful meadow space at the city's southwestern corner off Highway 93, where many of the hiking trails start. There is a paid parking lot on the west side of Highway 93.

Location: Open Space Mountain Parks, off Highway 93, Boulder, Colorado

Tulips blooming on the Pearl Street Mall

Boulder's most iconic man-made attraction is the Pearl Street Mall, which is definitely one of the top sightseeing spots in town. Running along Pearl Street for four blocks, the brick-paved pedestrian mall should be walked at least once while visiting. This buzzing area is filled with shops, both national chain brands and independent boutiques, as well as art galleries and dozens of restaurants.

There are benches where you can relax and do some top-notch people watching, and you'll usually stumble upon street performances. The Pearl Street Mall is the heart of Downtown Boulder, but not the only attraction here. The blocks surrounding the pedestrian-only walkway are home to more shopping and dining options and are equally popular with tourists.

Chautauqua Park

Boulder was the first city in the USA to specifically tax itself to preserve open space, and as such has a plethora of impressive city parks, including beautiful Chautauqua. The park, which is next to the Open Space Management Area, features stunning Flatirons views and plenty of hiking trails climbing up from its wide-open meadow setting.

It also has a cultural component. Chautauqua has been preserved as a historic landmark since 1898, when Boulder residents approved a bond issue to purchase the 80 acres it sits on.

Today, it is home to a community center dating back to the late 1800s that hosts lectures and music festivals, as well as a romantic restaurant, The Chautauqua Dining Hall. There is also a playground and tennis courts. Admission to the park is free.

Address: 9th Street and Baseline Road, Boulder, Colorado

Celestial Seasonings Tea Shop at the factory

When locals take their family sightseeing in Boulder, a stop at the Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory is usually on the agenda. The company is the largest herbal tea producer in North America, serving up more than 1.6 billion cups of tea annually.

The Boulder factory packages more than eight million tea bags a day, and visitors can tour the facility for free daily. The 45-minute tours give you a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the tea is made.

You'll get to check out the company's herb garden, as well as pay a visit to its Mint Room, where huge bags of peppermint and spearmint tea are stored before shipping - the smell in here is intense. There are also free tea tastings.

Address: 4600 Sleepytime Drive, Boulder, Colorado

Eldorado Canyon State Park

Part of Colorado's state park system, Eldorado Canyon is another top tourist attraction just outside Boulder. Home to soaring sandstone cliffs that are popular with rock climbers, the park boasts more than 500 technical climbing routes.

If you don't climb, however, no worries as there are also plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails as well as picnic spots along pretty South Boulder Creek, which also runs through the park. In winter, visitors can try snowshoeing and cross country skiing - it's easy to rent equipment from outdoors shops around Boulder.

Address: 9 Kneale Road, Eldorado Springs, Colorado

University of Colorado at Boulder

The CU Boulder campus is well worth a wander. It has plenty of impressive architecture, like the Old Main building, which was the university's first structure, dating back to 1876. The campus also boasts a number of attractions like the outdoor Mary Rippon Theatre, where the Colorado Shakespeare Festival performs in summer.

Here, you'll also find the Museum of Natural History , where more than four million objects, including Colorado's largest collection of bee specimens are on display. And the CU Art Museum , which has more than 8,000 objects covering some 10,000 years of human artistic creations.

Address: Regent Drive, Boulder, Colorado

Official site: https://www.colorado.edu/

Fiske Planetarium

On the CU Boulder campus, Fiske is one of the largest planetariums between Los Angeles and Chicago and also one of the most impressive.

The venue features a busy event line-up throughout the year. These include talks by leading researchers in the field, opportunities to check out the stars through the lens of the powerful Zeiss telescope, live musical and theater performances, interactive full-dome films in its completely immersive theater, and popular late-night laser and liquid sky shows that are set to music.

Address: 2414 Regent Drive, Boulder, Colorado

Official site: www.colorado.edu/fiske/

CU Boulder neighborhood

Directly to the west of the CU Boulder campus, The Hill is the city's college neighborhood and a buzzy place to wander when school is in session. Here, you'll find a number of student-focused shops and restaurants like The Sink, which has been attracting visitors for decades with its graffiti walls and delicious pizza. You'll also find live music entertainment venues like Fox Theatre .

Location: West of CU Boulder off University Blvd, Boulder Colorado

Flagstaff Mountain

A favorite destination to watch the sunset, you can either hike up or drive to the top of Flagstaff Mountain, which offers stunning panoramic views of Boulder and behind from its 6,983-foot-high summit. Also at the top is the Flagstaff Summit Nature Center, where you can learn about the local flora and fauna.

To drive up the mountain, take Flagstaff Road to Flagstaff Summit Road. There is a $5 fee to park at the summit. If you want to hike to the top, depart from the Flagstaff Trailhead where Baseline Road turns into Flagstaff Road. It is a moderate to strenuous two-mile hike up to the summit.

Location: Flagstaff Summit Road, Boulder, Colorado

Mount Sanitas Hiking Trail

Winding up both sides of the ridge that leads to Mount Sanitas' summit, the Mount Sanitas Trail is a challenging but rewarding hike that's a local favorite - although many Boulderites choose to run the trail for a quick workout.

The climb is rated moderate to difficult, and if you're not used to the altitude, you will definitely feel it on the way up, with a 1,343-feet of elevation gain in just over 1.5 miles (it's a 3.1-mile round-trip). But make it to the top, and you'll be richly rewarded with beautiful views across the valley.

Location: 0.5 miles west of 4th Street on Mapleton Ave, Boulder, Colorado

Valmont Bike Park

If mountain biking is your preferred outdoor activity, then you'll love Boulder's natural surface terrain park. Covering 42 acres, it offers a range of amenities for different skill levels, from beginner freestyle riders to cyclocross experts.

In the terrain park, you'll find dirt jumps, dual slalom, and two pump parks. For cyclocross there is a sandpit and two staircase run-up features. For more traditional riders, check out the network of single-track trails of varying difficulty. This attraction is also family friendly, with kid specific amenities.

Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art

Located downtown, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art has been around since 1972 when it was founded by a group of local artists. Today, it is one of the top venues in the state to showcase contemporary art.

The three galleries here rotate exhibits of regional, national, and international art. There is also a 100-seat black-box theater that puts on innovative performances, from dance to poetry readings, held throughout the year. The art exhibits are often eclectic and explore topics from racial inequality to disparities in wealth and poverty. Check their informative website for upcoming exhibits.

Ornate detail at the Dushanbe Teahouse in Boulder

The most unique looking restaurant in Boulder, the Dushanbe Teahouse is an attraction in its own right. Set along the Boulder Creek just a few blocks from the Pearl Street Mall, this landmark property was a gift from Boulder's sister city in Tajikistan.

The ornate Persian teahouse is a 1,700-square-foot work of art created by a group of 40 Tajik artisans over a number of years. Hand-carved and painted, it was built in Tajikistan than disassembled and shipped in pieces to Boulder, where it was put back together.

Today it serves as a functioning teahouse and restaurant. There are more than 100 teas on its menu, including a signature Teahouse Chai that should not be missed. The menu is internationally influenced but includes some Tajik dishes.

The real reason to visit, however, is to check out the interior design that features ornate carved plaster panels, cedar columns, a hand-painted ceiling, and contemporary oil paintings.

Address: 1770 13th St, Boulder, Colorado

Official site: https://boulderteahouse.com/

In a striking brick and concrete building downtown, The Museum of Boulder at Tebo Center is dedicated to telling Boulder's story throughout the decades. It is home to numerous artifacts from the city's past and also displays current artistic accomplishments. Dedicated to showcasing community stories, the museum features rotating exhibits covering everything from health to the art of travel.

The permanent Boulder Experience exhibition gives a good lesson on Boulder's history through interactive displays and multimedia experiences. There are also exhibits specifically for children, including the Playzeum, where kids can let their imagination loose with age-appropriate activities and exploration zones. The museum is closed on Tuesdays.

Founder / Director at Boulder Bike Tours

Herschel goldberg.

Born and raised in New York City, Herschel has lived in Boulder Colorado since 1968.

"As a bike tour professional, I knew I had to provide an experience for people to connect in the way I had, on the ground and in a very personal way. I want travelers and locals to experience Boulder in the way that I see and feel it."

What Happy Bikers Are Saying!

My family of four enjoyed the bike tour with Herschel! Not only did we enjoy the activity we enjoyed the knowledge that Herschel shared with us. We learned A LOT about the local history. Herschel is THE BEST tour guide! A must if visiting the area for the first time.

We did the Thursday night bike-to-farm tour and it could not have been more delightful! Herschel was an awesome guide, the route was gorgeous and easy, the farm could have been out of a storybook, the food was delish, and the sun setting on the way back was just the cherry on top.

Don't skip this terrific opportunity to visit area farms and learn from Herschel. I have such a deep appreciation for organic farming and the gifts we have in Boulder to be surrounded by such dedicated farmers and ranchers. The day was amazing, the company was superb and the lunch to follow could not be beat.

My husband and I spent most of the day riding with Herschel. He is a terrific teacher and guide. First, we rode the mountain trails, followed by a city tour of Boulder. It was a fun and memorable experience. We would definitely recommend riding with Herschel if you're in Boulder!

Having ridden with top European tour organizers for years, I approached Herschel of Boulder Bike Tours with a challenging proposition: helping a group of experienced road cyclists have a top-notch tour in Colorado. Herschel exceeded our expectations due to his high level of dedication, attention to detail, and strong network in the area. I strongly recommend his services.

15 Incredible Things To Do In Beautiful Boulder, Colorado

boulder colorado tours

  • Destinations
  • United States

From the time I first visited Boulder as an incoming college student in the 1970s, I have continued to admire Boulder’s majestic beauty and have repeatedly taken advantage of this mecca for outdoor adventures.

While the city’s foothill location and landmark Flatirons make it an ideal destination to enjoy Mother Nature by trekking on hiking trails and rock climbing, Boulder is also well known for an assortment of worthwhile attractions. Some of these places are associated with the University of Colorado , while others are either private endeavors or places run by the city. Year-round, Boulder offers fantastic spots to engage both young and old.

Boulder is less than an hour’s drive from Denver International Airport. Visitors can arrange day trips to nearby Eldorado Canyon State Park, Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Red Rock Amphitheatre, and some popular ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains.

outdoor amphitheater

1. Flagstaff Mountain Scenic Drive

To reach the summit of Flagstaff Mountain , it is necessary to drive up a series of hairpin turns. Along the way to the Realization Point parking area, some drivers stop at designated places to hike and enjoy the view. From the parking lot, one can walk to outlooks offering pristine views of Boulder and the surrounding area, the Sunrise Circle Amphitheater, the Flagstaff Nature Center, and a few hiking trailheads. Parking is available for a small fee.

Base of Chautauqua Trail in Boulder

2. Chautauqua Park

Chautauqua is a treasured Colorado National Historic Landmark. At the base, visitors can rent cottages, eat in a historic dining room, pick up snacks at the general store, and seek information from the ranger cottage. Crowds also flock to the park for film festivals, concerts, and programs that are held in the auditorium and community building. Throughout the year, multitudes of people access the easier trails heading into the mountains while more experienced hikers and climbers tackle the iconic Flatirons.

Pro Tip: Parking can be an issue on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Arrive early or consider taking the Park to Park free shuttle .

Boulder Falls

3. Boulder Falls

For many generations, visitors have driven to Boulder Falls to take pictures at the base of a 70-foot waterfall in a narrow canyon. Most combine this simple photo opportunity with day trips to Nederland or hike the moderate Devil’s Thumb Pass Trail or the easier Forsythe Canyon Trail.

Pro Tip: Before heading up Boulder Canyon, it is always advisable to check the Boulder Falls website and the Boulder Trails App for closures.

4. University Of Colorado Boulder

Bits and pieces of University of Colorado history can be collected during a self-guided walking tour of the campus . Start at Old Main, where the university opened its doors in 1877. Inside the building, the Heritage Center hosts exhibits chronicling the university’s history. Other notable campus landmarks are the Mary Rippon Theater where the Colorado Shakespeare Festival performances are held during the summer, the Henderson Building, the Museum of Natural History, The University of Colorado Art Museum, Varsity Lake, Macky Auditorium, the University Memorial Center, Folsom Field, the CU Events Center, and Fiske Planetarium.

Game Day at Folsom Field stadium where the Colorado Buffaloes play

5. Colorado Buffaloes

On game days , football and basketball fans are easy to spot. T-shirts, jerseys, and hats vividly display the team colors of black and gold along with references to the team’s mascot, Ralphie. Ticket holders for football games should arrive before the game begins so they can watch Ralphie and her handlers run the field. Anyone who loves the spirit generated by a college marching band and cheerleaders shouldn’t miss the opportunity to attend the Ralphie Stampede event the night before a football game at the Pearl Street Mall. This can be combined with an exploration of historic Downtown Boulder and a stop at a microbrewery or distillery.

6. Outdoor Colorado Shakespeare Festivals

For decades, Shakespeare performances have been a popular summer attraction on the CU campus. These annual events are held in the Mary Rippon Theater, named after Mary Rippon (1850–1935), the first CU female professor and the first woman in the U.S. to teach at a state university. Tickets for performances at this outdoor pavilion are available at the CU Presents website.

7. Fiske Planetarium

Take a respite from Boulder’s sunshine by watching a celestial show displayed on a 65-foot dome, the largest planetarium between Chicago and Los Angeles. Weekend matinees are offered to accommodate school-aged children who are mesmerized by space. The upcoming schedule for full dome films and star shows, laser fantasy and liquid sky music shows, music concerts, and live talks are posted on the Fiske Planetarium website .

8. The CU Museum Of Natural History

Anyone who loves fossils may be surprised to learn that Colorado is one of the richest fossil regions in North America. The museum’s permanent exhibit, Fossils: Clues to the Past, showcases how ancient plants and animals offer clues to the Earth’s history. Another noteworthy collection is found in the Unearthed: Ancient Life in Boulder Valley exhibit. In this room, the museum shares dozens of stone tools discovered in Boulder that date to approximately 13,000 years ago. Consider stopping at this museum in conjunction with a self-guided campus tour.

street lined with buildings

9. Pearl Street Mall

Four blocks of the historic downtown area are designated as a pedestrian mall. Locals and visitors walk along this route to check out the assortment of eclectic shops, restaurants, cafes, and street performers (buskers) on Pearl Street Mall .

Breweries And Restaurants

Take time to sample Boulder’s diverse culinary scene at one or more of Boulder’s downtown restaurants. Beer lovers can sample an assortment of local craft beers by following the Downtown Boulder Walking Beer Trail . However, be aware that this self-guided tour may not be up-to-date; some places may have recently closed. When weather permits, take advantage of the outdoor seating at cafes and restaurants or head to nearby Boulder Creek Path.

Indoor Attractions

Popular indoor attractions near Pearl Street include the Dushanbe Teahouse, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, and live music at the St. Julien Hotel and Hotel Boulderado. Don’t forget to search the Boulder Colorado USA site for annual event dates that bring additional entertainment, summer outdoor concerts, and crowds to the mall area.

10. Museum Of Boulder At The Tebo Center

The Boulder Experience Gallery, the museum’s permanent exhibit, reveals the impact that Boulder had on Colorado and the rest of the world. Young and old will become engaged with the hands-on interactive displays that showcase key aspects of Boulder’s remarkable history. Check the museum’s website for information about the temporary exhibits, as well as kid-friendly Playzeum and Google Garage. This popular indoor attraction is just a few blocks from the west end of the Pearl Street Mall.

Lobby of the Hotel Boulderado

11. Hotel Boulderado Tour

When the Hotel Boulderado opened for business in 1909, Boulder had approximately 6,000 residents, and the hotel’s daily room rate was between $1 and $2.50. Even though the structure has been renovated and updated numerous times, many of the historic details remain. The multi-tiered lobby staircase is one prime example. Original furnishings and black-and-white photos enhance the guide’s spiel.

View of NCAR while hiking in Boulder

12. Tour NCAR

Perched on a mesa near the base of the Flatirons is NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research), an architectural treasure designed by I. M. Pei. Inside this iconic structure, which was designed to resemble the Native American dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park, are the offices of an impressive group of award-winning scientists. Since 1960, these individuals have collaborated with scientists throughout the world. Guided and self-guided tours introduce visitors to these researchers’ award-winning accomplishments.

Pro Tip: NCAR’s parking lot is also used by day hikers who begin their hikes at nearby trailheads.

Locals often take their out-of-town guests to NOAA’s 90-minute guided tour where participants are escorted through four areas of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration complex. Unlike many other outings that replicate the work of scientists, this tour allows visitors to watch scientists monitoring real-time data on Earth and in space — as well as the interaction between the two. At the end of the tour, school-age children will be fascinated by the interaction of complex environmental processes by watching animated images of atmospheric storms, climate change, and ocean temperatures displayed on a 6-foot diameter sphere.

Pro Tip: Reservations are required for the free Tuesday afternoon tours.  Make sure to bring along an ID card for the security screening prior to entry. The post-pandemic tours are anticipated to commence soon.

14. Boulder County Farmers Market

Boulder County Farmers Market is considered one of the best in the state. Dozens of “growers only” vendors and locally sourced items are showcased at each week’s market, which takes place on Saturdays from the first weekend in April through the Saturday preceding Thanksgiving. The less busy Wednesday market has live music and a beer garden and runs from early May to early October. Parking close to the event at 13 th Street between Canyon Boulevard and Arapahoe Avenue may be an issue during peak times.

Boulder Theater

15. Boulder Theater

Boulder has multiple venues to showcase live performances and cinema presentations. The Dairy Arts Center is Boulder County’s largest multidisciplinary art center. Visitors and locals come to admire art exhibitions and to watch dance and theatrical productions as well as to view cinema showings. Macky Auditorium , on the CU campus, is another multi-use building with a seating capacity of a little more than 2,000 people. Their annual schedule includes Grammy Award-winning artists, local, domestic and international performers, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boulder Ballet, and musical performances by University of Colorado students and faculty. Smaller entertainment venues offering local, domestic, and international talent include the Boulder Theater in the downtown area and the Fox Theatre on The Hill.

Pro Tip: Plan ahead by checking online sites for updated lists of performances and the availability of tickets.

To maximize your time in beautiful Boulder, it is advisable to add both outdoor adventures and indoor explorations to your itinerary.

7 Colorado Hikes That Show Off The Beauty Of The State In The Fall

It’s not too early to start planning autumn adventures, and these hikes flaunt the beauty of Colorado in the fall.

8 Chautauqua Trail

Iconic hike with breathtaking views of the flatirons.

The Chautauqua Trail in Chautauqua Park within Boulder offers hikers an unforgettable experience. It's one of the best things for travelers to Boulder to do . As visitors begin their journey, they're immediately greeted by the towering Flatirons, Boulder's most recognizable natural landmark.

The trail winds through meadows bursting with colorful wildflowers in spring and summer, gradually ascending towards the base of the Flatirons. Hikers are treated to panoramic views of Boulder and the surrounding plains as you climb.

7 Mount Sanitas Trail

Challenging climb with rewarding city views.

Located on the western edge of Boulder, the Mount Sanitas Trail offers vistas that are similar to some of the most scenic fall hikes in the Rockies . The trail begins with a series of rock steps, immediately setting a challenging pace.

As hikers ascend, you navigate through rocky terrain and switchbacks, occasionally catching glimpses of Boulder below. The summit provides a 360-degree panorama of the city , plains to the east, and the Rocky Mountains to the west.

Despite its difficulty, the trail's proximity to town and relatively short length make it a favorite among locals for a quick but intense workout.

6 Royal Arch Trail

Steep hike leading to a natural stone arch.

The Royal Arch Trail, beginning in Chautauqua Park, takes hikers on a steep journey to one of Boulder's most impressive natural formations. It shouldn't be confused with the Royal Arch in the Grand Canyon , but this rock formation is just as intriguing.

The trail starts off gently but quickly becomes more challenging, with hikers navigating rocky terrain and steep inclines. As you climb, the path offers intermittent views of the Flatirons and Boulder Valley. The final stretch involves a series of rock steps leading to the grand finale: the Royal Arch, a massive natural stone arch framing spectacular views of Boulder and beyond.

7 Overlooked State Parks In Colorado Worth A Visit In 2024

These state parks might be underrated, but they are just as fascinating as the more popular ones and are worth visiting too.

5 First And Second Flatiron Trail

Adventurous hike with close-up views of the flatirons.

This trail is one of those that lead to surprisingly high elevation views despite being less challenging . Starting from the Chautauqua Trailhead in Boulder, the First and Second Flatiron Trail offers an exhilarating hike that brings visitors up close to these iconic rock formations. The trail begins with a steady climb through pine forests, gradually revealing increasingly impressive views of the Flatirons.

As hikers ascend, the path becomes steeper and more challenging, with some scrambling required near the top. The trail winds between the First and Second Flatirons , providing intimate views of these massive slabs of rock. At the highest point, hikers are rewarded with panoramic vistas of Boulder and the surrounding landscape.

4 Mesa Trail

Long, scenic trail connecting multiple boulder open spaces.

The Mesa Trail, stretching across Boulder's southern open space, offers hikers a diverse and scenic experience. Beginning near NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research), the trail meanders through meadows, forests, and rocky outcroppings.

Hikers are treated to ever-changing views of the Flatirons and the Boulder Valley as they traverse the foothills. The trail's length allows for various out-and-back or loop options, making it suitable for both short walks and all-day adventures.

Wildlife sightings are common, with deer, birds, and even the occasional bear adding excitement to the journey. Do not disturb or threaten the wildlife on the trail.

3 Green Mountain West Ridge Trail

Challenging summit hike with panoramic views.

Located in the western part of Boulder, the Green Mountain West Ridge Trail offers a strenuous but rewarding hike to one of the area's prominent peaks. The trail begins with a moderate incline through pine forests, gradually steepening as it ascends. Hikers navigate rocky terrain and switchbacks, occasionally catching glimpses of the surrounding landscape.

The final push to the summit is challenging but worth the effort. At the top, hikers are greeted with a 360-degree panorama of Boulder, with plains to the east, and the Continental Divide to the west.

This hike is particularly popular for its stunning sunrise and sunset views.

2 Eldorado Canyon Trail

Scenic hike through a dramatic canyon landscape.

Located in Eldorado Canyon State Park, just south of Boulder, the Eldorado Canyon Trail is rumored to be a better canyon hike than the one at Black Canyon Of The Gunnison . The trail begins by winding along South Boulder Creek , providing close-up views of the park's famous towering cliffs and rock formations.

As hikers ascend, you navigate through pine forests and rocky outcroppings, occasionally catching glimpses of rock climbers on nearby walls. The trail offers panoramic views of the canyon and surrounding mountains, with the difficulty increasing as it gains elevation.

1 Boulder Falls Trail

Short hike to a picturesque waterfall.

Located just 11 miles west of Boulder in Boulder Canyon, the Boulder Falls Trail offers a brief but rewarding hiking experience. The short trail leads visitors through a rocky canyon to a stunning 70-foot waterfall cascading down a sheer rock face.

Despite its brevity, the hike provides a sense of adventure as it winds along Boulder Creek, with the sound of rushing water accompanying hikers throughout the journey. The trail ends at a viewing area, where visitors can admire the falls and feel the cool mist.

City of Boulder Launches Affordable Commercial Grant Pilot Program

aerial view of downtown boulder around pearl street showing shops and businesses

Emi Smith , Media Relations, 720-822-9529

Reegan Brown , Community Vitality Senior Project Manager

The program is designed to increase opportunities for small businesses to thrive in Boulder’s commercial centers.

The City of Boulder is working to help address the rising cost of commercial space for small businesses with an Affordable Commercial Grant Pilot Program. This program provides grant funding to owners of commercial buildings, managers of commercial properties, and business ventures proposing new, expanded or repurposed uses for currently vacant commercial spaces, or redeveloped facilities offering retail, office, or industrial spaces at below-market rates. The pilot program strives to provide more affordable options for local small businesses, including women-owned and minority-owned businesses, that were most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Applications will be open to property owners or property managers with a project site within the city limits of Boulder. Additional grant dollars are available for properties located within the Central Area General Improvement District (CAGID). Applications will be scored based on several criteria including the project’s anticipated support for small businesses, diversity and inclusion and estimated impact on the local economy with a primary focus on how the project will improve affordability for local businesses. Applicants awarded grants will be able to invest the funds into capital projects that enhance their space for future tenants and initiatives designed to provide rent subsidies to tenants. The city will reimburse for a portion of the up-front investment with the requirement that the new or redeveloped spaces be leased at below-market rates.

“Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many office spaces in our downtown and urban centers remain under-utilized. The city is focused on partnering with our business community to find creative ways to reimagine vacant spaces into more affordable commercial opportunities for local businesses,” said Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde, City Manager. “Not only does the Affordable Commercial Pilot Program open doors for small businesses to thrive, but it also gives property owners a chance to fill their spaces with new, innovative ideas.”

Applications for the Affordable Commercial Pilot Program are open from Monday, Sept. 9 through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7. Visit the program webpage to learn more and apply. The program is partially funded by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding.
