So we surveyed 40 of our editors to find out which totes they swear by for commuting, vacationing, and everything in between. Though we personally love the convenience of being able to reach in and grab anything from the open top , if you prefer extra security, it also comes in a zipped version. The white canvas and colorful straps will never go out of style, and you can choose from 13 different colors and add a monogram for only $8 . The bag ranges from small to extra large , and if you want to easily wear it over your shoulder, we recommend ordering the long straps. It honestly may be the best $40 you’ll ever spend.

After filing the bag with all our items, it doesn’t weigh us down or become bulky. Though it doesn’t zip close, it does have a magnetic closure for extra security.

What to Look for in a Travel Tote

• Material: Material is without a doubt a key player in your decision when getting a travel bag. For a super long-lasting option, we recommend keeping an eye out for full-grain leather or pebbled leather since it’s more durable and won’t show scuffs or scratches easily. If leather is not your vibe, we recommend a fabric that will be either stain-resistant or easy to clean, like nylon or polyester. A cotton canvas tote, can also be a great option, as it often can be hand or machine washed.
• Organization: The way you organize your bag is personal—and you should find the bag that works to your advantage. The obvious answer is if you like a lot of organization, choose the bag with more pockets. For long distance travel, we recommend looking for a bag with interior pockets and zippered exterior pockets. If you’re more of a catch-all bag kind of person, we recommend looking for a flat-canvas bottom and a structured silhouette to help you stay organized even with less pockets.
• Color: “I often opt for versatile shades like black, brown, or neutrals that seamlessly complement my travel wardrobe,” says Deseri Kelley , founder of a luxury handbag brand. But if you like your accessories to make more of a statement, we recommend sticking with deep hues of statement colors such as deep reds, greens, oranges, etc. You’ll still get a pop of color without dirt showing up easily.

Okay, so this tote isn’t turning the heads of stylists and it-girls, but we simply cannot get enough of how functional this packable carryall is. In fact, after one trip, we’re sure that we’ll never be able to travel without it again. Initially, we were attracted to how small it was once folded. And whilst we were unsure of how much we would use it on the coast, it was compact and lightweight enough to pack in anyway.

Our only complaint is that the nylon silhouette is less structured than other fabrics, so when it isn’t full, it tends to look a little floppy.

Cuyana is our queen of elevated essentials and this one is extremely difficult to fault. Featuring zipped pockets, protective feet, a luggage sleeve and plenty of space, this travel tote is a guru in effortless overnight getaways.

In order to bring you the most objective review possible, we tried to look for faults in this overnight bag, but Cuyana made it almost impossible. As an overnight bag, this illustrious leather tote has thought over everything. From a spacious, compartmentalized interior to protective feet and a luggage sleeve, we really felt the difference sailing through the airport with this tote in tow. 

As one of the most sustainable luxury brands, Cuyana even has a recycled plastic option available for vegans and its leather option is responsibly sourced and LWG certified. If we had to find a downfall to this powerhouse travel tote , it would be that it’s slightly heavy for everyday use, but a lightweight packable tote or backpack solves that problem easily. 

Beis The Weekender: Best weekender travel tote bag

For us, this bag wasn’t love at first sight, but it’s kind of addictive once you start using it. So much so, that now we’ve added multiple colorways to our arsenal and barely go anywhere without one, especially while traveling. 

And while we prefer a more structured (like a backpack) at the airport, we love having a tote on holiday (especially when hitting the beach or heading to a market.) The Dagne Dover Dash is incredibly lightweight and compact to pack. It’s a lot more durable than other grocery totes (we tested it with a 600-page book and watermelon and it held up well.) And we appreciate the internal pocket for all those elusive smaller essentials like keys, cards and your phone. Just be warned that it’s almost impossible to settle on just one color, so you might as well add more than one from the get go. 

Anine Bing Rio: Best beach travel tote for women

• Timeless, sophisticated and incredibly stylish
• Woven seagrass fabric is light and breathable
• Spacious interior to fit all the essentials and more
• Woven seagrass fabric needs to be left to dry if exposed to excessive moisture or liquid

As major advocates of internal pockets and compartmentalization, we would only forgo this for an absolute showstopper, which this is. So we say go for it. Just add a zippered pouch to organize smaller essentials.

Usually, we’re all for prioritizing function, highlighting features such as pockets, zips and luggage sleeves. But for this Anine Bing Rio beach tote , the fashion-forward aesthetic is the real hero and should not be overlooked. 

Don’t get us wrong, it holds up well as a beach bag , with ample space for books, towels and a change of clothes. However, it’s the tote’s timeless yet on-trend style that has us summer lovin’ this season. So much so that we’re prepared to overlook the lack of pockets and luggage sleeve. I'll admit, I was sceptical about bringing a travel tote on my last trip through South East Asia. I'd always veered away from them thinking they were bulky, uncomfortable, messy and lacked the security of a crossbody. 

But after 10 days with the Bellroy Tokyo Tote I've changed my tune.

It could have been its featherlight weight (650 grams approx), or the classic tote look which meant it could double down as a work bag when I wasn’t travelling. 

Or it could have been the spacious interior and flexible pocket structure, which saw me fit a spare pair of clothes, iPad, water bottle, snacks, headphones, keys, wallet, phone and passport and still be able to zip it up.

Plus, thanks to its thoughtful design I always knew exactly where everything was stored, eliminating that awkward fumble and embarrassing unpack that happens way too often with me and backpacks.

Whatever the reason, this has now become my go-to bag … for work and for travel.

I loved how all the pockets are completely enclosed, which saved a leaky water bottle from ruining my day, and that the main zip completely closes, ensuring that nothing fell out while the tote danced about in the overhead compartment.

The front zippered pocket is also pure genius. While the idea of a front zip is nothing new, the one on the Tokyo Tote is designed to be discreet and did such a great job that half the time I forgot which side it was on. It's also deceptively deep and carried (read, hid) our passports safely throughout our trip.

While it has a dedicated laptop pocket, it's quite small and can only fit a 13" laptop. If you, like me, have something larger, this can easily fit in the main compartment but it will compromise on your side pop-pocket space.

There's also no luggage/trolley sleeve on this tote. If that's a must for you, the Tokyo Wonder Tote is a new addition to the Bellroy family that comes with one. It’s also roomier and can fit a 16" laptop.

As a petite person this is a welcome change as I've found many unisex bags often run large on me.

There's loads of flexible inner pockets for organising your items and two small front pockets for the small stuff. The material is thin and soft and can easily be packed into your luggage. Bear in mind though that while there is a laptop sleeve it isn’t padded.

How to choose a tote bag for travel

To a certain extent the material you choose comes down to personal taste and preference.

Many of the totes on this list are made from recycled materials, which are lightweight and better for the environment. Some can also be machine washed. 

Other materials totes come in include canvas, which is also lightweight, can be easily screen printed and is eco-friendly, and leather which is a luxurious option though will need special care.

Zip compartments

Some totes are simply large shells where you can throw everything, including the kitchen sink in, at a whim. Well, maybe a small kitchen sink. Others however make you feel as though you’d signed up to a Marie Kondo workshop and come packed with flexible pockets, water bottle pockets, zips, hidden sections, attachment straps and a key ring strap. 

Depending on how organised you like to be, or what you're planning to tote around with you (pun intended), it's a good idea to consider how many and what type of compartments you need. 

In my opinion, having an external pocket is always a must for those quick-reach items like phones, keys and passports.

Waterproofing or Durable Water Repellent Coating

If you're planning to travel through rain or snow with your tote, it's a good idea to look at the weather proofness of your bag. 

Leather bags can be waterproofed using a protector spray. news.com.au checkout's Harriet Amurao recommends Sneaker Laundry's Nanotech  Shoe Protector Spray . Otherwise we recommend looking for a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating to protect your items.

I’m a sucker for a multi-tasking accessory and if you find yourself hopping between tote, backpack and crossbody while travelling a bag that can convert into different styles can save you loads of baggage space.

It was tested by Traveler 's global director of audience development Lara Kramer ; she brought it on an overnight staycation in Brooklyn and a four-night stay at the hospital for the birth of her baby. “You can easily fit a long weekend’s worth of clothes (and shoes!) in this bag. And, in our case, an abundance of pajamas, towels, and home comforts—think portable fan, slippers, a sound machine, and framed photos of family and our pet cat—for a long hospital stay,” she says. There's a handy bottom compartment that can hold two to three pairs of shoes (or your dirty clothes) that also features a removable padded tray that can be washed as needed. Kramer did note that because of its generous size and ample storage, this bag can hold a lot of weight. However, the padded messenger strap made of memory foam does take the comfort level up a notch.

Crafted by the popular direct-to-consumer line that turns out wardrobe staples , this go-with-everything oversized tote is a minimalist’s dream. Everlane's ReNew Transit weekender has become a go-to for Spurrell, ever since she first brought it on a weeklong trip to Egypt . “This makes a fantastic, roomy personal item to top your carry-on for a trip when you probably should check a bag but refuse to. It’s also perfect for a casual one-nighter when you just want to throw pajamas, an outfit or two, and some other essentials inside,” she says. The bag features a wider bottom than top, which is great for filling it to the brim without dealing with items spilling out in the back seat. “It’s quite comfy on the shoulders, even in sleeveless clothes with which other straps might dig in, though the padded section of the strap doesn’t sit on your shoulders unless you extend the length quite a bit (I prefer to keep the straps short so the bag sits right under my arm),” says Spurrell. We also love that it's constructed out of recycled polyester (made from 36.6 renewed plastic bottles) that’s also water-resistant. I Can’t Believe How Much This T+L Editor-loved Travel Tote Holds — and Still Fits Under the Airplane Seat

We tend to give a lot of attention to our carry-on bag — is it the right size, right material, right wheels? But for a frequent traveler like me, the unsung hero of stress-free trips lies in a great personal item bag . 

After years of using every backpack, tote, purse, and laptop case imaginable, I knew I needed something more substantial for a two-week international vacation. I did a deep dive into the latest options, ultimately landing on the T+L-editor-loved Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe Tote , and I cannot stress this enough: it was a total game-changer. Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe Tote

At first glance, the Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe Tote is simply a stylish tote, but it shines in its thoughtful features and uber-versatility. For starters, the bottom pocket: an individual zippered compartment designed to keep your shoes, dirty clothes, or toiletries separate from the rest of the bag. On our way to Thailand, I was able to fit two pairs of women’s sandals (size 9) and one men’s sandal (size 14) comfortably, with room for socks and other little fill-ins. On our way home, we made even more room to fit some of our dirty clothes that we didn’t want mixed in with our checked bags.

On the back, you’ll find two exterior zippers that create a pass-through sleeve, letting you easily slide the tote over suitcase handles. Because they’re zippers rather than a standard slit-opening trolley sleeve, you can adjust the width to your specific carry-on handles, giving you a locked-in fit. I promise, no matter how quickly you’re moving through the terminal, this bag won’t budge. (Bonus: When you’re not using the trolley sleeve, simply zip the bottom zipper and you have an additional external pocket!)

The construction is built tough, with well-formed handles and a structured body that feels decently protective for a soft-body bag. Knowing we were going to be traveling in and around water, I chose one of the five color options in the 600D recycled polyester — a water-resistant fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. But there are also nine additional colorways available in an eco-friendly, high-quality canvas (which has a softer, less structured feel, but is still durable enough for travel). 

Last but not least, I adored its size, which can best be described as ludicrously capacious. Measuring in at 14 inches wide and 15 inches high with a volume capacity of 24 liters, the Catalina Deluxe Tote is the largest in the brand’s line that qualifies as a personal item. (The Catalina Deluxe Day Tote is also personal-item compatible, but comes in quite a bit smaller at 14 liters; the Catalina Deluxe Small and Catalina Deluxe Large — which hold 40 and 49 liters, respectively — both qualify as carry-on size but do not technically qualify as a personal item, though I’ve been told the smaller size can sometimes fit under the seat if it’s only partially packed.) To be honest, as I was packing I didn’t believe that this sucker would fit under my seat. But sure enough, even fully stuffed, it zipped shut and easily slid under on each of our eight flights.

Like a Mary Poppins bag, this tote fits a baffling amount of stuff, yet is so light and easy to carry. “I needed a bag that would allow me to bring a lot of extra stuff on a trip to Europe for two weeks with only a carry-on plus the Catalina,” one reviewer wrote. “I was able to add three pairs of shoes (sandals, wedges, and high heels) in the shoe compartment. In the main compartment, I had two blazers, a blanket, my laptop, makeup bag, chargers, wallet, Beats headphones, sunglasses, and gum — and I still had space to add more.” 

And while it obviously shines as a travel bag, you’ll find yourself taking the Lo & Sons tote everywhere. “I’ve been using it the past month for beach and pool trips with my kids — the separate zipper compartment on the bottom fits four rolled-up Turkish towels,” said one reviewer. 

“I’m not kidding when I say I use it for everything — gymming, work, I even took it on a weekend trip with four outfits, swimwear, laptop, and shoes,” said another. (Oh, one more deceptively useful feature I forgot to mention: If you don’t need a bottom pocket to carry separate items, simply unzip the panel that divides it from the main compartment and you’ve got yourself an even more spacious tote bag.) “I usually do that for grocery days, then put it back in for days I’m going to work and need to pack my gym shoes,” the reviewer noted.

Streamlined for everything you need and nothing you don’t, this spacious bag convinced me to join the same bandwagon as the woman who bought hers in 2019 before her honeymoon: “I searched high and low for the most spacious carry-on with pockets for all my things. I landed on the Catalina Deluxe Tote and have used this bag religiously since then. I travel quite often, and it comes with me every time.”

I’ve spilt coffee, food, and makeup on this bag and it's so easy to clean with a disinfectant wipe,” says associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny . It's her go-to backpack because of its many pockets, roomy compartments, and ultra-soft material. Inside, there's a large zippered compartment, a small mesh pocket, and three compartments for keeping items like socks, beauty products, or tech essentials separate. “One of my favorite features is the shoe compartment on the bottom of the bag that fits a pair of slippers or sandals,” says Kenny.
