Perched on the Iberian Peninsula bordering Spain, Portugal has never quite attracted the same level of tourist interest as its neighbouring continental counterparts, but its distinct culture makes it a worthy alternative. While many chose to explore the country independently, there are also a wide number of group tours available which allow you to meet and share your experiences with fellow travellers. We’ve picked out 5 of the best small-group tours of Portugal currently on offer.

Highlights of Portugal (7 days)

This action-packed week-long tour will introduce you to Portugal’s main highlights. Over the course of the trip, you’ll wander the hilly streets of coastal Lisbon, where you can munch on a custard tart while gazing at sun-dappled architecture, get your fill of history and culture at UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Monastery of Batalha, step back in history wandering charming hill towns like Sintra, take a day trip to the coastal town of Aveiro, and visit the pilgrimage sites of Fátima. The tour ends in the historic city of Porto via the majestic Douro Valley where you can learn to become a port connoisseur in the birthplace of the famous fortified wine. From €1,203 per person.

Portugal Small Group Tours

Portugal Small Group Tour Overview:  13 days south to north

The  Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal, most famous for its beautiful beaches. Our tour begins in  Tavira , an ancient Moorish town turned resort offering a relaxed away-from-the-crowds experience.   Évora is the capital of the region of Alentejo and our next lodging destination. It was once an important city of the  Roman Empire and was later home to Portuguese kings.

Lisbon  hosts us for a three night stay in the old Moorish district of Alfama . Our explorations inside the city will include an extensive walking tour and the fabulous Jerónimos Monastery in Belem.  Outside, we will travel to peculiar  Sintra and also to the very pleasing town of  Cascais .  Coimbra is the medieval capital of Portugal.  Our time there includes a visit to the university and the fabulous Joanina Library followed by a performance of Fado .

The Douro River Valley  displays some of the most lush scenery anywhere. We’ll travel winding roads through vineyard covered hills to visit one of the oldest wineries in the region. Then we’ll take a private boat cruise upstream to  Pinhão and lunch on a balcony overlooking the river.  Porto has deservedly been voted one the world’s best tourist destinations. It has great food, a lively riverside scene, 300 year old Port caverns and outstanding architecture.  Above all you’ll meet welcoming Portuguese people throughout your journey.

Getting there.

  • Terms & Conditions

From the 1400s to the 1800s Portugal was a maritime powerhouse, a pioneer in navigation and cartography, home to daring seafarers and traders who established colonies in South America, Africa, India and as far away as Macau in the South China Sea.  Today Portugal is a small democratic country of 10 million inhabitants while Portuguese is the official language of 8 additional countries and spoken by over 300 million people.

The region of Algarve comprises the wonderful, sunny southern coastline where some of Europe’s best beaches lie, stretching from the eastern Spanish border to the western Atlantic coastline. Tavira is the Algarve’s most beautiful town with cobblestone streets, traditional architecture and fine dining. Our historic center lodging for the first two nights on tour is the Pousada Convento Tavira , a former 16 th century convent.

Arrival to Faro airport where you will be transferred to the hotel. Late afternoon orientation walk followed by aperitifs and welcome dinner.

Portugal Small Group Tours

Tavira dates back to Phoenician times and was later dominated by Romans and Moors before being reconquered by Christians in 1242. During the Age of Discoveries Tavira was an important port – supplying wine, salt and dried fish to the expeditions.

The Ilha (island) da Tavira has one of the Algarve’s longest and most beautiful beaches. It is reached by a 20 minute ferry ride from the center of town and passes through the mudflats and lagoons of the Ria Formosa Nature Park.  The Atlantic waters are cold for swimming but the golden sand beaches allow for enjoyable walking.

The Gilão River flows through Tavira on its way to the Atlantic. The two sides of town are connected by the pedestrian “Roman Bridge” which is thought to be more likely a 17 th century reconstruction of a previous Moorish bridge.  Our guided morning tour begins here and will take us up to the remains of the former Moorish castle and includes a visit to the Igreja da Misericórdia to see the wonderful  Azulejos tiles.

Late morning train ride to the Algarve capital city of Faro .  Free time to wander and lunch on your own followed by a guided walk of the delightful, walled old town.

Evening free in Tavira

Portugal Small Group Tours

Our morning visit is to charming  Mértola , perched on a hillside above the Guadiana River.  As the northernmost trading port on the river, Mértola has a long history of visitors and conquerors featuring Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans,  Visigoths, Moors and Christians. The sites we will visit regard the last two of these and include the mosque-turned church and museum, a typical Moorish home and the medieval archaeological site. Included lunch.

Transfer to Évora , a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Portugal’s best preserved medieval towns. Our lodging for the next two nights is the boutique Albergaria do Calvario hotel, located in the historic center of Évora.

Late afternoon and evening on your own to get charmed in the maze of cobblestone streets, visit the public gardens or just take in the view from the Giraldo Square.

Portugal Small Group Tour

Évora has a long and rich history and within its walls hosts a fascinating display of monuments. It was a regional capital of Celtic tribes as far back as 3,000 B.C. and under Roman domination from the 2 nd century B.C to the 5 th century A.D. – remains from this period are parts of the thermal baths, city walls and the 1 st century A.D Roman Temple, originally dedicated to Augustus. The city was ruled by Moors for 450 years whose architectural influence is still noted today. Under the rule of the Portuguese kings beginning in 1166 Évora became one of Portugal’s most important medieval cities. This morning our local guide will walk us through the centuries, taking in the imposing Romanesque/Gothic Cathedral and the eerie Chapel of Bones.

Half of the cork harvested in the world comes from Portugal. The cork from cork oak trees is harvested just once every nine years and is used in myriad products such as insulation, tiles, shoes and handbags as well as wine bottle corks. The process of harvesting and processing of cork is very interesting as we will discover in a late afternoon factory visit.

Included dinner in a local restaurant that serves only what arrives from the farm and sea that very day.

Portugal Small Group Tours

Mid-morning visit and tasting at a Quinta do Anjo family run winery.

Free time and lunch on your own at the coastal resort town and beach at Costa da Caparica.

Mid-afternoon departure for the fabulous city of Lisbon! Our lodging for three nights is the Aurea Museum hotel, located in the famous Alfama district. The Alfama is the oldest and most characteristic part of Lisbon, squeezed between the Tagus River and the hilltop São Jorge Castle. After check-in at the hotel your tour manager will guide you through the winding lanes and picturesque small squares that rise up to the castle.

Evening free

Portugal Small Group Tours

The Tagus River , the longest of the Iberian Peninsula, originates in Spain, flows through northern Portugal, opening to become an estuary at Lisbon before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. Its wide, slow moving waters, well protected from the ocean allowed the city to become a prosperous trading center through the rise and fall of many civilizations – the Roman Olisipo , the Visigoth Ulixbona and to the Moors, who ruled until 1147, it was al-Us̲h̲būna . Beginning in the 15 th century Portuguese navigators and traders traveled the globe, established colonies, brought back luxury goods and Lisbon became one of the richest, most vibrant cultural centers on the planet.

In 1755 Lisbon was devasted by an earthquake estimated to be of 8.5–9.0 magnitude, followed by a twelve meter high tsunami and a raging fire that lasted five days. An estimated 30,000 people lost their lives and most of the city, excluding the Alfama, was in ruins.  But, within one year, the city was cleared of rubble and new broad avenues, large squares and seismically protected buildings were under construction. This morning we will further explore Lisbon with a guided tour of the Chiado and Baixa areas of the city.

Cascais is one of the loveliest seaside towns anywhere, with small beaches, a pedestrianized Old Town, excellent restaurants, grand mansions, villas and gardens. Free time and lunch on your own.

Sintra is an attractive but busy mountainous tourist village set amidst forests and ferns, most famous for the nearby crazy, colorful and crowded Pena Palace.  We will arrive mid afternoon, after the cruise ship buses have departed, for a guided visit to the worthwhile Sintra National Palace , a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to Portuguese kings. The palace was built atop a former Moorish castle in various architectural styles of the 15 th and 16 th centuries.

Evening free in Lisbon

Portugal Small Group Tours

The Belém district is located 6 kilometers west of the Lisbon center and is home to many of the city’s most important monuments. Situated on the banks of the Tagus, the early 16th century Belém Tower was built as part of the city’s defense network and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Monument to the Discoveries was constructed in 1960 to honor the Portuguese Age of Discoveries . It is decorated with 33 of the most important figures of that period including Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan.

The Jerónimos Monastery and Cloister is an enormous, fabulous complex in Manueline design – a lavish and thematically complex architectural style named after King Manuel I. Construction began in 1501 and was completed a century later. The monastery is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After some free time for lunch along the riverside we’ll take in the National Coach Museum , a wonderful collection of 16 th to 19 th century coaches.  Beautifully maintained and restored – most were royal carriages – they show the evolution of private transport from horse drawn up the earliest motor cars.  Included in the museum is an exhibition of the Royal Family’s Departure for Brazil in 1807.

Late afternoon and evening free in Lisbon

Portugal Small Group Tours

Today we drive north from Lisbon to Coimbra with very interesting stops along the way.

Óbidos is a charming, fortified medieval hill town with a well-preserved castle. The main gate is beautifully decorated with glazed blue and white Azulejo tiles. Do try the local specialty – Ginja de Óbidos – a delicious cherry liquor served in edible chocolate cups.

The upper part of  Nazaré  has spectacular views from its headland 318 meters down to its lovely long, sandy beach. Some of the world’s biggest waves break here.

The Knights Templar were headquartered at Tomar for hundreds of years. They constructed the castle and the Charola, the Templar chapel, in the 12th century. Four centuries later the chapel was incorporated into an architectural splendor, the Convent of Christ.

The Palacio da Lousã , just north of Coimbra, occupies an 18th century palace in the heart of a wonderful mountain range, the Serra da Lousã.   Included dinner at the Palacio.

Portugal Small Group Tours

Morning free in Lousã.

Coimbra  was originally a Roman town. It was conquered by the Moors in 713 and, after the Reconquest, was the first capital of Portugal in the 12th and 13th centuries. The University was founded in 1290, making it one of the oldest in Europe.

In the afternoon we will have a guided visit of the University’s Royal Palace, the Chapel of St. Michael and the Joanina Baroque Library, followed by a performance of Fado.

Included dinner in Coimbra.

Portugal Small Group Tour

Morning departure to Aveiro , where we’ll visit the factory and museum of Portugal’s most well-known producer of porcelain.  Aveiro is a colorful coastal town crossed with canals and moliceiros , gondola-style boats. You’ll have free time here to take a ride and to enjoy lunch at an outdoor cafe in one of the town squares.

Arrival to Porto where our lodging for the last three nights on tour is the Pestana Porto – A Brasilera , located in the heart of the historic district.

The Ribeira district of Porto, the oldest part of the city alongside the river, is filled with small restaurants and bars, street musicians and strollers. From there the city slopes up the hillside where you’ll find narrow cobbled streets, beautiful architecture and vintage shops and coffee houses.

Evening on your own to enjoy the riverside scene of cafes and restaurants.

Portugal Small Group Tour

The Douro River  originates in northern Spain, some 900 kilometers from where it spills into the Atlantic Ocean. It forms a long stretch of the Portugal/Spain border, then passes through vineyards and agricultural areas down to the cities of Porto and, just across the bridge, Vila Nova de Gaia .

Early morning departure from our hotel for one of the most scenic rides in all of Europe. After a coffee stop in picturesque Amarante we’ll arrive to the Alto Duoro River Valley , the world’s oldest designated wine region. Most famous for the production of fortified Porto wines, vintners these days also produce excellent reds and whites.

Visit to the one of the oldest wineries in the region with a tour through their wine museum, a walk through their cantina for an explanation of how fortified wines are made, followed by an included lunch overlooking an amazing land and riverscape. Just below the winery we’ll board a private boat for the 45-minute cruise on the Douro to the village of Pinhão .

Evening on your own in Porto

Portugal Small Group Tours

Morning guided walking tour of Porto that includes two UNESCO sites – the 15 th century Gothic church Igreja de São Francisco , the 19 th century Palacio de Bolsa – and the beautiful interior of the São Bento train station.

Afternoon free to visit one of the Caves , the historic Port wine cellars of the Vila Nova de Gaia – easily reached on a short walk via the Dom Luis I Bridge, one of six fabulous bridges that cross the Douro. The underground cellars, some of which are 300 years old, reflect the trade history between England and Porto and the early English dominance of Port wine production.

Evening farewell dinner in the Ribeira.

We had a fabulous day made all the more special by the care & attention given by Filipa to make our excursion so memorable! I have already recommended this tour to others! Book it you will have a fabulous day!!

Ken L. | Apr. 2024

We had a wonderful time in Évora! Filipa was an outstanding tour guide. We saw so much together!

Stacie F. | Mar. 2024

Tripadvisor.

My daughter and I had a great tour with Andre at Portuguese for a Day. Andre was well-informed, punctual, and professional. He got us into all the sites ahead of the crowds and made great recommendations for the rest of our stay. In fact, he helped us secure “hard-to-get” dinner reservations at his favorite fado restaurant for TONIGHT! We are so excited! Thank you, Andre!

Brittany H. | Mar. 2024

Absolutely amazing tour and a wonderful experience overall! Andre was so personable, incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. He made our first trip to Portugal unforgettable. Will definitely recommend his company to all of our friends planning Lisbon vacations.

Elizabeth P. | Oct. 2023

After sightseeing on our own for a week, this tour made me realize how invaluable a guide can be. Filipa made everything so easy, stress free, and fun. We did two tours in two days and by the end, she was part of our family. She thought of every detail and even accommodated my aging parents. You will not regret booking a tour with them!!

Testimonial sent via email.

We are having tea with our pastries and reliving the happy memories of today.  We really, really enjoyed meeting you and appreciated all that you shared.  We are also very happy you suggested early admission to Pena Palace. It was so worth it! We also loved Regaleira! Both places are a photographer’s paradise. Thank you for being so warm, welcoming and patient. Will definitely recommend you and the tour to others.

Peekpro reviews.

Working with Filipa to create a tour for the five of us in our party, we worked on a two-day tour that took us around many great sites inside and outside of Lisbon, while working in some very good wine tasting. Since this was a first time in Portugal, we felt we wanted to get the most of our time and we soooo many pictures to remember our visit for some time. Our tour guide was the main reason our time there was complete. He seemed well prepared for our days out, was quite knowledgeable (and patient) answering all of our questions, and really went out of his way to make us all feel comfortable in Lisbon and the towns we visited. Now we know so much more about the region, and looking forward to a return trip.

Adam R. | Mar. 2019

Tripadvisor.

Filipa was our guide and she was nothing short of phenomenal. Tour was excellent and she pointed us towards excellent food spots multiple times. Probably the best tour of our two week vacation. Also a great way to see multiple spots near Lisbon in a single day.

Linda L. | Jul. 2018

This was an excellent escape for a day outside of the city. We got to see how the locals live and saw some of the most stunning mountains and beaches on our stops. Our guide Andre was interesting and shared so much information with us, treating us like we were lifelong friends. Be sure to eat some seafood for lunch in Setubal.

Did you know there’s a little Portugal tucked way in Coimbra where everything is shrunk to a miniature size? Here, we’ll visit two prime examples of the exuberant Manueline style of architecture, JERONIMOS MONASTERY and the TORRE DE BELEM . The monastery is filled with grand architecture and delicate arches, a marvel to behold. It now houses an archaeology and maritime museum and stands as the resting place for some great explorers like Vasco de Gama. After lunch on the riverside, we drive to the ALFAMA district, one of Lisbon’s oldest and most charming. Here, we’ll wander the colorful squares and get lost in the medieval maze of streets and alleys—compact houses line the steep streets with an ancient cast dominating the skyline. The extravagant interior is furnished with Victorian and Edwardian pieces, rich ornaments, and perfectly preserved paintings and porcelain. Step into a fairy tale storybook as you take a panoramic tour of Sintra, admiring the monuments and lush greenery. Afterward, we will drive towards Lisbon along the coast with a stop in the quaint fishing village of CASCAIS for a relaxing walking tour along the coast. Enjoy lunch at a restaurant on your own before we head back to Lisbon. You’ll have the evening in Lisbon to explore on your own. Today, we’ll explore this museum city with a tour of the Roman Temple before heading to the 12th-century Cathedral. Pass through the cobblestone alleyways adorned with wrought iron balconies to the famous Temple of Diana and the mysterious Chapel of Bones. Today’s trip takes you to the nearby seaside town of AVEIRO or the “Venice” of Portugal. The canal lined streets and pastel-colored houses bring a little bit of Venice to Portugal. Here, we will also take a Moliceiro boat trip and visit the Praia De Costa Nova. We’ll return to Porto just in time for you to have a free afternoon before tonight’s performance. Tonight, join us for a performance of FADO , a melancholic music that is unique to Portugal, an expression of longing and sorrow. Enjoy dinner on your own this evening.

Day 10: HIGHLIGHTS OF PORTO

This morning, we’ll take a walking tour of PORTO , Portugal’s second-largest city, named for port wine. We’ll visit beautiful sites like the riverfront Ribeira district, the Stock Exchange Palace, and the gilded Church of São Francisco. We will complete our morning with a visit to a Porto Winery in the Vila Nova de Gaia district. In the afternoon, you’ll have time to explore the sites of Porto on your own. We highly recommend walking through the streets and enjoying the atmosphere of the lively city. Sights like the unique stores of Livraria Lello and the Mercado do Bolhão are a must to be visited. Tonight, we will celebrate the conclusion of our tour with dinner and wine in a local restaurant.

Day 11: ADEUS BEAUTIFUL PORTUGAL

Today, we’ll depart with transfers to the Porto airport and train station. Continue on your European journey with a Sicily small group tour or a trip to the Northern Italian Lakes .

Amazing Portugal

My wife and I participated in the 11-day group Tour “Wonders of Portugal and Douro Valley,” Sep 12-22, 2022. The tour organized by Secret Tours was superb. I cannot imagine a better itinerary. It was very well thought up to the smallest detail, smartly alternating between a variety of activities – visiting historical places , wine and food tasting, listening to fado, and many more. Our minibus was very comfortable and spotlessly clean with WiFi and water bottles. Our wonderful guide, Diana Oliveira, is highly educated, competent, flexible, accommodating, and fun to be with. She generously shared her knowledge with us, was always ready to help, and made the tour really enjoyable. This was our second tour with Secret Italia – last year we went to Puglia, which was also fantastic. We are looking forward to more tours with this company.

Surprisingly Portugal

I wanted to let you know that our experience with Secret tours in Portugal was AMAZING! It exceeded all our expectations. You could not have picked a better tour guide; Diana has a real passion for her profession. She was warm and friendly, and painted beautiful tapestries of the history and culture of places w e visited. She was also very efficient and ensured the trip ran smoothly at all times, allowing us to just sit back and enjoy ourselves.

The hotels we stayed at were also wonderful. The one on the Douro River was a fantastic experience, with unmatched views and a beautiful outdoor restaurant. We especially enjoyed sitting on our patio at night looking over the pool and river while we enjoyed a bottle of wine. We also can’t say enough about the staff and service at the hotel in Lisbon.Although I have traveled extensively around the world for work, this was our first tour experience together in a foreign country, and we could not have asked for a better experience.Thank you, we are already looking forward to our next Secret tour!

Reviews of small group tours to portugal and spain.

Tour Radar and Destination Spain did not advise at any time that neither of them were actually the tour operators. As a result of this we were very close to not being picked up at all as there was a mix up with paperwork and we had no idea it was a different company. We will not go through a third party again. In saying that the actual tour itself was good. Guides were great, accommodation was excellent. Well done Julia Tours.
Loved Portugal, beautiful towns and cities. Such wonderful historic treasures.
Well organised and good pace. All went smoothly Thankyou!

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar (a territory of the United Kingdom). You are not required to obtain a visa to enter either country for the short duration of this tour. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom (for Gibraltar) to determine what travel documentation is required.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

89-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. , no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Spain, Portugal or Gibraltar (a territory of the United Kingdom). For complete vaccination and inoculation information, please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries visited on this tour to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

The tour is fast paced. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Spain and Portugal are home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, many dating from ancient or medieval times. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. We conduct walking tours in most of the cities visited.

Many of the hotels do not provide for disabled access. Although all the hotels on this itinerary have elevators, many of the sites visited do not. Airports and train stations provide limited access to elevators. Many of the museums will have elevators; however, they are not always conveniently located for your use. Further, ramps are not commonly found in public venues.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate of Portugal is among the warmest of any country in Europe. In spring and summer temperatures are extremely high, often reaching 85ºF (30ºC) and above, and most days are sunny. Evenings and nights cool down considerably. Throughout this region rainfall is minimal or non-existent during the summer months and light in late spring and early fall.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here .

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Spain and Portugal are generally warm and dry from April through September. From late March into November, the weather cools considerably and there is a higher chance of rain. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are not usually available, so guests may have to give their garment to the hotel to be ironed for a fee. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Spain and Portugal:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Escorted & Package Tours in Portugal

Escorted tours are structured group tours with a group leader. The price usually includes everything from airfare to hotels, meals, tours, admission costs, and local transportation.

There are many escorted tour companies to choose from, each offering transportation to and within Portugal, prearranged hotel space, and such extras as bilingual tour guides and lectures. Many of these tours to Portugal include excursions to Spain.

Some of the best escorted tours to Portugal are offered by Blue Danube Holidays (tel. 800/268-4155 or 416/362-5000; www.bluedanubeholidays.com in the U.S.), a long-established company since 1983. It offers a Grand Tour of Portugal along with any number of beach holidays (from Madeira to the Algarve), and even city tours of Lisbon.

Some of the most expensive and luxurious tours are run by Abercrombie & Kent International (tel. 800/554-7016; www.abercrombiekent.com), including deluxe 15-day tours of the Iberian Peninsula by train. Guests stay in some of the country's finest hotels.

Alternative Travel Group Ltd. (tel. 01865/315678; www.atg-oxford.co.uk) is a British firm that organizes walking and cycling vacations in Portugal and Spain. Petrabax Tours (tel. 800/634-1188 in the U.S.; http://petrabax.com) attracts those who prefer to see Portugal by bus, although fly/drive packages are also offered. A number of city packages are also available, plus trips that try to capture the essence of Portugal and Spain.

Many people derive a certain ease and security from escorted trips. Escorted tours -- whether by bus, motorcoach, train, or boat -- let travelers sit back and enjoy their trip without having to spend lots of time behind the wheel. All the little details are taken care of, you know your costs upfront, and there are few surprises. Escorted tours can take you to the maximum number of sights in the minimum amount of time with the least amount of hassle -- you don't have to sweat over the plotting and planning of a vacation schedule. Escorted tours are particularly convenient for people with limited mobility.

On the downside, an escorted tour often requires a big deposit upfront, and lodging and dining choices are predetermined. As part of a cloud of tourists, you'll get little opportunity for serendipitous interactions with locals. The tours can be jampacked with activities, leaving little room for individual sightseeing, whim, or adventure -- plus they also often focus only on the heavily touristed sites, so you miss out on the lesser-known gems.

Before you invest in an escorted tour, ask about the cancellation policy: Is a deposit required? Can they cancel the trip if they don't get enough people? Do you get a refund if they cancel? If you cancel? How late can you cancel if you are unable to go? When do you pay in full? Note: If you choose an escorted tour, think strongly about purchasing trip-cancellation insurance, especially if the tour operator asks you to pay upfront.

You'll also want to get a complete schedule of the trip to find out how much sightseeing is planned each day and whether enough time has been allotted for relaxing or wandering solo.

The size of the group is also important to know upfront. Generally, the smaller the group is, the more flexible the itinerary is and the less time you'll spend waiting for people to get on and off the bus. Find out the demographics of the group as well. What is the age range? What is the gender breakdown? Is this mostly a trip for couples or singles?

Discuss what is included in the price. You might have to pay for transportation to and from the airport. A box lunch might be included in an excursion, but drinks might cost extra. Tips might not be included. Find out whether you will be charged if you decide to opt out of certain activities or meals.

Also ask about the accommodations choices and prices for each. Then look up the hotels' reviews in a Frommer's guide and check their rates for your specific dates of travel online. You'll want to find out what type of room you get, too. If you need a certain type of room, ask for it; don't take whatever is thrown your way.

Finally, if you plan to travel alone, you'll need to know whether a single supplement will be charged and whether the company can match you up with a roommate.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.
