Looking for fun things to do in Holland, Michigan? This little town on the west side of the state is a popular tourist destination, particularly in the spring when its famous tulips bloom with a burst of color. Holland is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway and is an absolute joy to visit every time whether you’re coming for a weekend or just taking a day trip.

Top things to do in Holland, Michigan

Most of the top Holland, Michigan attractions revolve around the Dutch history in the area . The first Europeans in the area were Dutch Calvinist separatists, who settled in Holland (and named it after their homeland) in the 1840s. Even today, more than a quarter of the city’s population is of Dutch descent, so it’s no surprise that many of the top things to do in Holland, Michigan focus on that history. It’s consistently ranked as one of the best small towns in the United States, so there’s more than tulips here.

Tulip Time Festival

Holland’s biggest annual festival draws thousands of visitors from around the Midwest each spring. Tulip Time lasts for eight days in early May every year and coincides with millions of tulips bursting into colorful bloom around the city, and it’s ranked as one of the top springtime activities in Michigan . Several of the spots mentioned in this article participate, with visitors flocking to places like the Windmill Island Gardens and Veldheer’s Tulip Farm, as well as city parks and areas downtown with gardens. Parades, Dutch dance performances, and other events round out the schedule. Learn more here .

Windmill Island Gardens

Photo of a Dutch windmill with rows of yellow tulips blooming in the foreground at Windmill Island Gardens, one of the top fun things to do in Holland, Michigan

This city-owned park ranks among the top things to do in Holland, Michigan because of its beautiful gardens and – most notably – the De Zwaan windmill that towers above them. This is the o nly authentic Dutch windmill in operation in the United States and it’s still used to grind grain today (you can pick some up in the gift shop if you’re so inclined). The city purchased the windmill from a small town in the Netherlands and had it shipped all the way to a port on Lake Michigan. Visitors can climb the stairs to the outdoor deck on the upper level and learn a bit about the milling process inside.

Elsewhere around the grounds, you’ll find a Dutch street organ from Amsterdam and a Dutch carousel. There is also a mini-Netherlands display that gives a glimpse of life among the canals. Though it receives its peak visitation during the Tulip Time festival, the staff replaces the tulips with longer-lasting flowers once they’ve lost their petals though, so the gardens remain beautiful all summer long.

Nelis’ Dutch Village

Photo of a giant stork carrying a sack for silly photos with Dutch style buildings in the background

Next on the list of top things to do in Holland is Nelis’ Dutch Village . This replica Dutch village is a great place to have fun and learn a thing or two about the culture. As you wander through the village, you’ll find dancers performing Klompen dances, and they’ll even teach you a few moves. In other areas, you can watch a wooden shoe carver creating the footwear and learn about their history. For a tasty touch, kids can learn to make their own stroopwafel cookies. If you’ve never had one, they’re delicious! You’ll also be able to view historic clothing or watch a demonstration of the famous blue and white delftware pottery. Kids will love the petting zoo, variety of kiddie rides, and over-the-top photo ops like the one pictured here.

Holland Museum

If you want to learn more about the city’s Dutch heritage , look no further than the Holland Museum , located right in the beautiful downtown area. You’ll learn about local history from the original Dutch settlers to the creation of the Tulip Time festival and on to the present. The museum also hosts plenty of artifacts from actual Holland, with artwork, delftware pottery, furniture, and Dutch clothing that span more than 400 years.

Cappon and Settlers Houses

Just down the road from the Holland Museum, you’ll find additional buildings where you can learn about the early days of the town. The Cappon House is a restored Victorian-style home that was home to the first mayor and his family . The house remained in the family for over 100 years and many original furnishings remain. This house gives you a peek into the life of a wealthy family in the area.

Just down the road, you’ll find the much smaller Settlers House . This little cottage is an example of the way a more typical working-class resident would have lived in the past. This home was occupied as recently as the 1990s, but it has been restored to the 1870s era for exhibition. Visiting both one after the other really shows off the contrast between lifestyles. Note that tours are by appointment early, so check the schedule ahead of time.

Veldheer’s Tulip Farm

Visitors walk among rows of brightly colored tulips blooms under bright blue skies with a small windmill in the background

Each spring, 6 million tulips burst into bloom at Veldheer’s Tulip Farm . Visitors can walk through the gardens and admire the varied colors and styles of blooms – and do a little bit of “shopping.” Orders can be placed for bulbs to be planted in the fall for gardens at home. The varieties are stunning, and include the world’s largest blooming tulip, which is enormous compared to the normal sized ones. Numerous tulips crossed with peonies have a unique look that isn’t commonly seen elsewhere.

If you can’t make it during the tulip blooming season, don’t worry. Longer-lasting perennials can be enjoyed in the gardens from June through October each year. The De Klomp factory produces wooden shoes and the famous Dutch delftware pottery . You can watch artisans creating both through large windows and can even request personalized products. Also on site, you can view the small herd of bison.

Holland State Park

Photo of a small sand dune with scrub on top and a picnic table and grill in the foreground at Holland State Park

Holland State Park is absolutely one of the top things to do in Holland, Michigan. It’s one of the most popular state parks, and it’s easy to see why. The beach area is huge, with perfect gentle waves rolling in off of Lake Michigan, crashing against sugary sand. Late summer is the best time for swimming as the water is at its warmest, but visitors flock to the shores year round. There are bathrooms and concessions at the beach house, as well as plenty of benches, picnic tables, and grills. From the beach area closest to the canal, you can get great views of the Big Red Lighthouse as boats pass by. Ottawa Beach is the perfect spot for sunsets. There is also a small swimming area on Lake Macatawa.

In addition to the day use beach area, Holland State Park has two separate campgrounds . These are among the most popular spots in Michigan and reservations book up very early for summer weekends so plan ahead if you want to stay here. The Beach Campground has some sights right off Lake Michigan and offers electrical hookups, but no built-in fire pits. The Lake Macatawa Campground is further from the beach, but also more wooded. A small number of cabins are available as well.

Tunnel Park

The 22-acre Tunnel Park right on Lake Michigan is named for a tunnel that was drilled through one of the sand dunes to offer easy access to one of the dreamy beaches you’ll find all over this side of the state. In addition to the swimming and picnic areas, you’ll find a playground and an area to climb the dunes – it’s harder than it sounds on sand! A stairway offers easier access to an elevated view of the lake. Admission to the park is free, but there is a parking fee. Like Holland State Park, this is also an excellent spot for watching sunsets over Lake Michigan.

DeGraaf Nature Center

If you’ve had too many stroopwafels and want to get outdoors to walk some of them off, check out the DeGraaf Nature Center . This 18-acre nature preserve has several short trails that pass through woodland areas and over streams and ponds. Many of the trails are wheelchair accessible. The trails are open year round for walking, running, cross-country skiing, and showshoeing – and they’re pet-friendly as long as you keep your dogs on a leash. You’ll also want to try the Geology Walk , which features different types of rock samples with educational signs at each stop. At the visitor center, you can browse some wildlife exhibits and watch birds through the large glass windows overlooking bird feeders.

Outdoor Discovery Center

Part of the same network as the DeGraaf Nature Center, the Outdoor Discovery Center offers a chance to try several short trails. None of them exceeds 3/4 of a mile in length and there are several sections of boardwalk that make some of them wheelchair accessible. There are several outdoor play areas and two fishing ponds (catch and release) on the grounds.

The De Witt Birds of Prey Center is home to various large birds that have injuries preventing them from being returned to the wild. You’ll see hawks, eagles, falcons, owls, and a vulture here. The Birds of Prey Center has indoor and outdoor programming where visitors can learn about the various birds.

Van Raalte Farm Park

The Van Raalte Farm Park is located on a historic farm with a beautiful home that was built by the son of the city’s founder as its centerpiece. The former farmlands are now open for recreation and outdoor activities. The park is accessible year round with hiking in the summer and cross-country skiing and sledding in the winter. You’ll also find picnic areas, grills, and playgrounds.

Holland Princess

If you want to get out on the water in Holland, hop a ride on the Holland Princess , a 65-foot paddle-wheel riverboat. Cruises start in Holland on Lake Macatawa before heading out to Lake Michigan. Along the way, you’ll get a close-up look at the striking Big Red Lighthouse as well as views of the dunes along the shore and beach houses that’ll make you green with envy. You can book lunch or dinner cruises and enjoy a meal with a view. Note that public cruises are limited, so check the schedule when planning your trip.

Holland looks so beautiful! I need to visit Michigan at some point and see Holland during tulip season. It looks like such a beautiful place 🙂

This is so amazing! I had no idea this was even a place but now I’m determined to go! How cool.

This looks so fun and your photos are gorgeous! I can’t believe I’ve been to the area twice and never visited Holland. I’ll have to check it out next time I’m there.

I’ve visited the Holland tulips festival 2x now- the first time was a week after the festival. There were no crowds but the flowers were starting to fade/pass on. Then unknowingly we went during the festival, and omg if it wasn’t so busy. So we weren’t able to get the BEST photos, but we plan on trying next year. Thanks for sharing!

I never knew Michigan had a Holland! Looks just like the real thing. Love those tulips!

This is such a cute place to visit! I love how many different tulip fields there are here – so similar to the Netherlands!

Holland State Park just happens to be one of the most visited state parks in Michigan, and it's all thanks to the gorgeous beaches.

Holland State Park has two beaches – one on Lake Michigan and one on Lake Macatawa. In addition to the beaches, visitors can use the campgrounds , concessions, playground, paddle rentals, and the miles of trails that weave through the park.

Holland State Park

If you can stick around the park for sunset, it's completely worth it. Ottawa Beach overlooks Lake Michigan and is known for its spectacularly explosive sunsets. Standing on the banks of Ottawa Beach, it's easy to forget that what you're staring at is, in fact, a lake, and not an endless sea.

Windmill Island Gardens

You can't have a mini Holland without the windmills, so you can bet that Holland, Michigan, is sure to deliver. One of the best things to do in Holland is to visit the Windmill Island Gardens . The Dutch-inspired park is wonderful for getting out onto walking paths , slipping outside of the busy city, and experiencing nature.

Windmill Island Gardens is one of the best places to experience the city's Dutch Heritage. It features one of the last working windmills that was allowed to leave the Netherlands . In 1964, the windmill was brought to Michigan and is the highlight of the park, living among 36 acres of gardens and natural areas.

If you're wondering whether the mill still works, the answer is yes. The mill is still in operation and grinds grain into flour. Visitors can take a tour of the windmill to see it in action.

Among other attractions at the gardens are an antique carousel, a working street organ, 15,000 tulips that bloom in late April and early May, themed holiday plantings, and replica structures of Dutch buildings.

For the best view in town, you'll want to experience Mt. Pisgah Dune Boardwalk. This meandering boardwalk and stair system climbs 157 feet above Lake Michigan, with its apex offering sweeping views of Lake Macatawa, the marinas, and Lake Michigan.

The trail is an out-and-back wooden walkway that winds through the forest and eventually up Mount Pisgah. It's an easy climb for almost anyone.

It takes about 12 minutes to complete the half-mile walk , and you'll find ample parking not far from the entrance to Holland State Park.

Veldheer Tulip Garden

Close your eyes and just try to fathom six million tulips. Six million is a staggering number, so try to imagine the explosion of color that comes each spring from the six million tulips that bloom at Veldheer Tulip Garden . You might start to believe you are actually in Holland.

Vern Veldheer started his tulip garden in Holland, Michigan in 1947 with 100 red tulips and 300 white tulips. Since then it has grown to become one of the top tourist attractions – and most colorful places – in the country. Other blossoms to enjoy include daffodils, hyacinths, and crocus. In the summer, expect to see Dutch lilies, daylilies, and peonies.

Kollen Park

Overlooking the Macatawa River, Kollen Park has a lovely promenade that has wonderful views of the water. Residents and visitors consider Kollen Park, just outside of downtown Holland, to be one of the city's most beautiful green spaces.

In addition to the boardwalk, the park has a boat launch, playground, and picnic shelter. You can stop by the Queretaro Fountain , which was given to Holland by its sister city, the city of Queretaro in Mexico. An Immigrant Statue is a gift from the Netherlands.

The park is hopping with activity year-round, but one of the best times to visit the park is during the summer, when it hosts outdoor live performances at the bandshell.

Address: Kollen Park Drive, Holland, Michigan

Outdoor Discovery Center

Take a deep dive into West Michigan's natural beauty with a stop at the Outdoor Discovery Center . This non-profit outdoor education center provides visitors and the community with programs and interpretive exhibits to educate about the natural environment of Holland and the surrounding area.

You can visit the De Witt Birds of Prey Center to learn more about these species, which include owls, hawks, falcons, eagles, and vultures.

Among the programs offered at the discovery center are summer camps, school programs, guided hikes, and much more.

Address: 4214 56th Street, Holland, Michigan

Sanctuary Woods Preserve

If you thought you'd exhausted all the woodland wanderings available in Holland, think again. Sanctuary Woods Preserve is a lush, tree-covered, protected 40 acres that has a really fantastic (and easy) hike through the forest .

The secret of the preserve is that the path leads to a stairway that crests a high dune. From the top, you'll have a wonderful view of Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa.

Holland Museum

Soak up some culture with a visit to the Holland Museum , part of three museum sites in the city that also include restored houses, The Cappon House and Settlers House . The museum has an impressive collection of more than 100,000 artifacts and archival materials that help tell the story of Holland's past.

Among the exhibits are the famous Dutch Galleries . The Holland Museum has been gifted an extraordinary amount of Dutch heritage artifacts, which are all on display.

Address: 31 W 10th Street, Holland, Michigan

Centennial Park

Perhaps the prettiest place in downtown Holland is the Victorian-era Centennial Park. Stepping onto the leafy brick pathways will really feel like you've stepped back to the 19th century.

The park is a 5.6-acre space that sits on where Holland's original marketplace used to be. It was redeveloped to be a park in 1876. Today it is brimming with flowerbeds, a gazebo, a Dutch fountain, and a fish pond.

You can also visit the Veterans Memorial , which is a Michigan Historic marker that honors the Dutch settlers in Michigan.

Address: 250 Central Ave, Holland, Michigan

Dorr E. Felt Mansion

While visiting Saugatuck Dunes State Park, be sure to stop at The Felt Estate , one of the most historic mansions in Michigan . Built in 1928, the mansion was built by Dorr Felt for his wife, Agnes.

Felt, an inventor and industrialist, came to Western Michigan in the early 20th century. He built his estate for he and his wife and their four children. The Felt Estate is a 12,000-square-foot mansion with 25 rooms spread across three floors.

After The Felts left the home in 1949, the mansion was used as classrooms for The Saint Augustine Seminary, a Catholic prep school. In the 1970s, it was used as a prison. It was sold in the 1990s to Laketown Township to be used for the public.

Today it is one of the top places to host events in Western Michigan, and is popular for history tours.

Seasonal Things to Do in Holland Michigan

Springtime holland michigan things to do.

Holland blooms and blossoms in the springtime — quite literally. Every year, the community plants thousands of Tulip bulbs — flown directly in from The Netherlands — and each spring, residents and visitors are showered with miles of brightly colored tulips.

Holland Michigan Tulip Time Festival

To celebrate this colorful array of flowers, the community hosts its Tulip Time Festival. Tulip Time is an annual tradition in Holland that has been taking place since 1929. The festival itself is a week-long celebration filled with endless events and activities, including two internationally recognized exhibits – Zeeland Girl by Rem van den Bosch and Journey of the Tulip by Ibo Gülsen.

The Best Summer Things to Do in Holland Michigan

Spring in Holland is short, sweet, and full of opportunity, but summer quickly follows and that is one of the seasons that people love the most in this lakeshore town.

Not only is Holland situated off the coast of Lake Michigan, but it also is home to Lake Macatawa — an inland lake that is perfect for fishing, swimming, and boating. Both of these popular Holland Michigan lakes boast beautiful beaches and opportunities for water sports.

Whether you are renting a vacation home or you are taking a day trip to the dunes, you will find that these are some of the best things to do in Holland Michigan in the summer…

Spend a day at Holland State Park

With over 142 acres, Holland State Park is home to Lake Macatawa with a channel connecting the inland lake to Lake Michigan. You can come for a day, or stay the night at one of the two modern campgrounds.

Relax on the beach, or hike along the dunes. Holland State Park is one of the most popular parks in the entire state of Michigan, and for good reason. There are recreational activities for people of all ages and skill levels.

“ Although the weather was not going to allow us to spend real time at Holland State Park Beach, we still wanted to visit Lake Michigan before we left town on Sunday. A friend recommended James Street Beach, a hidden gem situated at the end of James Street. “ I’m not sure how much of Holland’s shoreline you’ve seen lately, but “beach” is a generous term. We had a great time following the trail to the sandy area that led straight to the water. Nothing is more exciting and magical than Lake Michigan in the morning, especially a morning after a storm. “ Lake Michigan is beautiful, clean, large, obviously great (hehe), and can be enjoyed on a day trip from Metro Detroit. So, to me, Holland was a city that granted access to Lake Michigan. “ Most of my trips to Holland have been spent lying on the beach, eating a late lunch or early dinner Downtown, and retiring to a three-hour car ride home or a B&B for the night. “ Known best for its soft and sandy  Lake Michigan beaches  and sand dunes, breathtaking sunsets, and iconic views of the “Big Red” Lighthouse, Holland State Park is one of the most visited  Michigan State Parks . “ Joanna Dueweke

Window on the Waterfront

Vibrant and green, Window on the Waterfront is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists in Holland’s downtown area — a great place to wander, rest, and recharge.

Heading toward your car afterward, stop at  Lemonjello’s  for a “Buzzed Latte” made with honey and vanilla. It’s a great little pick-me-up before exploring other parks.

Visit Nelis’ Dutch Village

This theme park celebrates the Dutch culture that the Holland Michigan community holds so dear. The youngest visitors to this theme park can enjoy the rides, explore the tulip farm exhibit, pet a few animals, and participate in unique events, such as wooden shoe racing.

“ We didn’t want the Dutch experience to end, so we headed over to  Nelis’ Dutch  Village to get a more interactive history lesson. This attraction has something to offer the whole family, and we had a great time checking out the replica village before heading back to our side of the state. “ As we entered Nelis’ Dutch Village, a young girl dressed in traditional Dutch garb asked if we would like to hear a song. Of course, we said yes! She then placed a songbook into the street organ (that was about the size of a wall) and pressed some pedals, then, as it has for many years, the very large wall of sound began to play. I couldn’t help but smile. “ The Dutch village consists of 30 structures, all paying homage to different parts of Dutch culture, from cheese making to candle making to the carving of wooden footwear known as clogs. “ We watched several demonstrations and also witnessed many families taking candid photos with horse sculptures and tulip gardens. We wandered over to the petting zoo and fed baby goats, bunnies, and even a llama. It was truly an experience for all. “ Joanna Dueweke

Windmill Island Gardens

If you haven’t had enough Dutch heritage yet, don’t worry — there is more! Windmill Island Gardens  is a municipal park on the edge of the city that offers the only authentic working Dutch windmill in the United States.

The gardens are full of flowers (especially the tulip gardens that Holland is infamous for), whimsical landscaping, a large windmill, and plenty of places to roam.

This windmill is called a DeZwaan – meaning “graceful bird.” The park is quite picturesque, featuring well-kept gardens full of flowers (obviously with plenty of the signature tulips), a bridge perfect for a selfie, walking paths around the outer edge, and even a carousel for the kids.

The Story of Holland Michigan and How It Transformed Into a Premier Michigan Destination

The story of Holland is similar to many communities that were settled in the Midwest by European immigrants who were looking for a new place in America to call their own.

Nelis' Dutch Village, Holland - Best Things To Do In Holland

Dutch Heritage

Holland Michigan was, and still is, tied closely to the Netherlands. The people who founded Holland were a group of Dutch settlers who traveled to New York from Holland in the 1840s, with hopes of purchasing land and settling in Wisconsin.

It was a mere coincidence that an early winter arrival and poor travel conditions forced the group of pioneers to stay in the Detroit area, with hopes of traveling again in the spring. While staying in Detroit, the group’s leader, Albertus C. VanRaalte, heard about available land in West Michigan and decided to look into the opportunity.

VanRaalte Settles Holland

After discovering the natural beauty and abundant natural resources, VanRaalte changed the settlers’ plans, ultimately leading them to the shores of Lake Macatawa.

This original group of settlers arrived in 1847, and soon after, many more Dutch immigrants followed. Lured by the promise of the American Dream, they did not realize that there were many years of hardship ahead as they worked to settle the land and make it prosperous.

Railroads & Tourism

By the late 19th century, railroads connected Holland to the rest of the Midwest, which helped spur industry in the community. In addition, Holland was almost immediately hailed as a tourist destination.

By the 20th century, Holland was home to many industries where stuff ranging from pickles to pianos was being created. Throughout the 20th century, Holland continued to grow and develop, and it benefited from the many industries that were able to find success in this community of tight-knit residents.

However, the economy was almost always anchored by the tourist industry, as visitors from around the state sought refuge in the peaceful, natural beauty of the area and the charm of this cultural community.

Nelis' Dutch Village, Holland - Best Things To Do In Holland

The Nelis Family

In 1910, the Nelis family first ventured to the United States. They were so in awe of the beauty that is West Michigan, they purchased land and began growing produce.

During the Great Depression, the family started growing flowers, specifically tulips. This business became quite successful, and as an added feature the family began to import Dutch goods to sell in their shop.

By 1952, the Nelis’ small operation was outgrowing its small beginnings, so the family purchased land on a small two-lane road that would become Nelis’ Dutch Village.

Holland Mi Michigan | By Sherry Trautman | Travel-Mi.com

Holland Michigan was named one of “America’s Prettiest Towns” by Forbes Magazine! See for yourself what makes this town so special!

Downtown Holland’s iconic cobblestone sidewalks line the streets with over 100 unique and locally owned shops, galleries, eateries, and brew pubs. Be sure to visit on a warm Thursday evening during the summer to watch lively street performers entertain shoppers from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

You can dine, shop and explore all year round thanks to Holland Michigan's effective snow-melt-system.  Snowmelt keeps downtown sidewalks and streets free of ice and snow so you can safely shop throughout the winter!

Holland is more than just tulips or the downtown area, it has nature centers, boardwalks, campgrounds and lots of hiking trails to explore!

The Big Red Lighthouse

Holland Michigan Big Red Lighthouse

2215 Ottawa Beach Road, Holland State Park View, Holland Mi Michigan

Did you know The Big Red Lighthouse is Michigan's most photographed lighthouse?  For a great view of Big Red, travel to Holland State Park Beach Parking lot and walk along the boardwalk to the north pier (wheelchair accessible).

You can also view Big Red from Mt. Pisgah, where the dune stair case takes you 157 feet above sea level. There's lots of info and directions below about that.

Who Wants Ice Cream!?

ARRR! Visit Captain Sundae at two locations in Holland!   Holland North-365 Douglas Avenue and Holland South-247 West 40th Street.

Ahoy Matey!   It's impossible to FULLY enjoy Holland without a stop at Captain Sundae's for nautical themed ice cream treats!  Maybe you need to try a Yucky Sailor or their delicious Kiss the Captain which involves creamy vanilla ice cream topped with gooey hot fudge, crushed cookies, a bright red cherry and a Hershey's kiss!

Outdoor Discovery Center Macatawa Greenway

The Outdoor Discovery Center has a pond that you can "catch and release" fish!! The center provides the poles and tackle so you can practice your skills! It's a great place for kids as there are lots of hands-on things to do. They have a wonderful raptor house and discussion area.

The Outdoor Discovery Center rescues raptors that can't be returned to the wild. They have a golden eagle, two bald eagles, several owls, red tail hawks, falcons and more. They are open year round and allow use of their trails to ski in the winter.  Oh and did I mention this place is free?! ;)

Holland State Park

2215 Ottawa Beach Rd, Holland Mi Michigan.   Camping, Paved Bike Trails, Great Sunsets!  The campgrounds are walking distance from the beach with showers and bathrooms.

Be sure to reserve your spot early as they fill up quickly in the summer, especially close to holidays. Visit the Michigan State Park and Harbor Reservations website to book.

Holland State Park Campground Map

The Lake Macatawa campground is a traditional campground offering 211 campsites, the Beach Campground is tucked between sand dunes with 98 paved campsites and 31 full hook-up sites.  Nice restrooms available.

Both campgrounds are within 50’ of swimming beaches and Lake Macatawa Campground is only ½ mile from Lake Michigan.

is located near 3rd street right after you pass the sign for Holland State Park-see map below.  It is a great place to obtain brochures, a map of the area and ask questions.

Mt. Pisgah Dune Boardwalk

Holland Mi Michigan Mt. Pisgah Dune Boardwalk

2238 3rd Ave, Holland Mi Michigan.  (Off Ottawa Beach Road)

This incredible dune east of the Holland State Park is accessible via a boardwalk and stair system. With its apex 157 feet above Lake Michigan, the boardwalk offers breathtaking views of Lake Macatawa, marinas, Lake Michigan and the Big Red Lighthouse.

Holland Mi Michigan Map

Location:   Look for the white gazebo which marks the start of the trail.  It is paved until you reach the 237 stairs to climb to the top to view the lighthouse and lakes.  There are two viewpoint levels so be sure to check them both out.

The rest of the trail is not a boardwalk, it's a dirt trail (see my photo above).  Enjoy the walk through a cool wooded forest with numerous trail markers.

Holland Mi Michigan, Mt. Pisgah. By Travel-Mi.com

Parking : On our first visit we had a heck of a time finding the parking location for the boardwalk (I had to ask two people working in their yards!) as you cannot park on 3rd Ave. If you are driving south, drive past the State Park sign, pass the Mt. Pisgah trail head white gazebo on your right and look for a very small brown "Mt. Pisgah Parking" sign. There are two lots on the left.

Restrooms:  The second parking lot closer to the State Park has a port-a potty.  There is not a restroom near the boardwalk.  There are also restrooms at Holland State Park and Lake Macatawa Campground to the east of the trail head.

Park Hours:  April 1-Oct 31: 8 a.m.-10 p.m., Nov 1-March 31: 8 a.m.-dusk.

Holland Mi Michigan. By Travel-Mi.com

If you are unable to obtain parking in the two small lots on Ottawa Beach Road, proceed to the Holland State Park Beach Parking lot and walk back.  You will need to have or purchase a Michigan State Park Pass.

The Mt. Pisgah Trail system does not lead to the beach.  You will need to walk there from your parking space along Ottawa Beach Road.

Be sure to wear athletic shoes, bring water and your camera!

Where to Eat:   So, a Traveling Michigan reader highly recommends Crazy Horse.  We haven't been there yet but if you go let us know how it is!!

Holland Cottage Rentals

The Holland Area Visitors Bureau has a nice list of available home rentals.

Houses on or overlooking Lake Michigan tend to be pricey. But prices drop a block away from the beach, and houses on Lake Mackatawa are less expensive than on Lake Michigan.

Whether you are a resident of Holland or one of its neighboring towns, you’ll want to know where the best beaches in Holland Michigan, are located!  Holland sits right on the shore of Lake Michigan, the third largest of the five Great Lakes, and offers stunning Holland Michigan Beach experiences.

Table of Contents

A boy's feet walking along a beach waterline

The West Michigan area of Lake Michigan’s coast boasts some of the most popular access points to the stunning and unsalted Lake Michigan.  Whether you’re looking for something bustling with activity or off the beaten path, I have some suggestions for you to check out!

Holland Michigan Beach #1

Holland state park.

One of the most well-known of all beaches in Holland is Holland State Park. This beach attracts the most traffic throughout the sunny summer months!  Visitors and locals love the long length of the beach that has room for everyone to stretch out.  At this Holland beach, you can bring your blanket, beach umbrella, and cooler to stretch out for a day playing in the waves of our lovely unsalted lake.

.

Another perk of a visit to Holland beach at Holland State Park is the ample parking as long as you have a recreation pass or are willing to pay the daily entrance fee.  You can find all of the information about daily fees or annual passes HERE .  If you are a Michigan resident, you can add this pass to your yearly vehicle license plate, which grants you access to all of the Michigan State Parks all year round.

Bonus! Exercise aplenty at this beach in Holland

While you are enjoying this bustling Holland beach, be sure and take a short walk out on the pier, where you can get some bonus exercise.  While you’re there, look back for a stunning view of the Holland Harbor Lighthouse, affectionately called Big Red by locals.  If you’re not sure the pier is the walk for you (it is closed when conditions are risky), then you can take a walk down the side of the channel that the boats use to travel from Lake Macatawa into the much grander Lake Michigan .  Many folks place their lawn chairs out near the channel and catch some rays while watching the boats pass by.  Don’t be surprised to see a few kites flying high over the beach while you’re there.

Big Red from the Pier

One feature that distinguishes Holland State Park from other beaches in Holland, MI, is amenities.  A sturdy brick building sits on the beach with modern restrooms (and baby changing areas), concessions (I’m talking ice cream!), and a small gift shop.  Beach volleyball courts are available nearby, along with water sprayers to clean your feet before heading back to the large parking lot.

There’s a Reason This Beach is #1

I could go on and on about the many offerings at Holland State Park.  It’s one of the many lovely Holland beach areas and great for hours and hours of fun in the sun.  There are plenty of vacation cottage rentals available through VRBO and AirBNB .  Even camping accommodations are available.  You can choose a lot next to the sandy beach or a smidge further from the sand in a woodsier setting.  You can find more information about camping on either of these sites at the Michigan DNR website .  But before you pack up and head for the beach, I have one last tip.  If you’re unsure about the weather before heading to the state park, you can peek in on the State Park Beach Webcam .

a book sits on a wooden table with greenery in the background. The book's title is Midwest State Park Adventures

Midwest State Park Adventures makes a great travel companion or gift. Some of the best travel writers in the Midwest collaborated to put this book together, which covers 12 Midwest States and hundreds of state parks.

And I, the Hip Grandma, contributed by writing the Michigan chapter!

Holland Michigan Beach #2

Tunnel park.

Tunnel Park is an unspoken hero among the beaches of Holland, Michigan.  Perfect for families, you will find a play area and large grassy park area before crossing through the concrete tunnel carved out under a dune leading onto the sandy beach and gorgeous lake view!

A couple walks down the beach together at Tunnel Park

Parking is readily available and comes with a minimum fee when an Ottawa County Parks System representative mans the entry.  Take note that an annual recreation pass is not valid at this county park.

Once you find a comfortable parking space, let the kids stretch out on the play equipment while you nab a picnic table for a quick lunch.  If you’d like to grab a quick workout while you’re there, be sure and take the stairway up the dune to get some leg action while your kids run past you up and down!  The view from the top is fantastic and makes it worth the exercise!  Finally, while in the park, check out the beach volleyball courts – challenge someone to a match or park your chair nearby and watch someone else battle it out.

This beach in Holland is a 2-in-1 experience!

After lunch, make a quick pitstop at the modern restrooms on your way over to the tunnel (you can’t miss it).  Enjoy the short trip through the tunnel and be prepared for the breathtaking view that awaits you on the other side.  The concrete tunnel opens to a small area with a couple of benches.  A few small stairs will take you down to the white sand, a hallmark of all of the beaches in Holland, Michigan.

Once you’ve arrived at the sandy beach area, you can take a sunset walk along the shore or find a place to chill on the sand while the kids splash in the water.  The dunes and grasses come relatively close to the beach area here, and my kids always love to scale these grassy ledges.  This hip grandma finds it fun to watch, but not to climb, but if you’re adventurous, give it a try!

Holland is more than just beaches.  Take a look at How to Enjoy Your Visit to the Holland Michigan Tulip Time Festival – An Insider’s Guide

After you’ve enjoyed your time on the sandy beach, rest easy knowing you can use one of the handy water sprays back on the way from the tunnel to the parking lot to spray off your sandy feet.

You can check HERE for more info on amenities available at Tunnel Park, including rules for bringing your dog.

Holland Michigan Beach #3

Riley beach.

A local favorite, Riley Beach, is a small area of beach in Holland, Michigan.  This quiet little beach boasts convenient parking and carry-in boat access (great for kayaking or canoeing).  Because this beach is small and less-traveled overall, you won’t find modern restrooms or picnic accommodations.  You will, however, still find the white sand and beautiful lake view that makes Holland beaches so lovely.

Sunset at over Lake Michigan

Be prepared to head up a somewhat steep and sandy hill to get from the parking area to the beach.  No rush – the walk to the beach area is part of the charm of this cozy little beach that lies off the beaten path.  Once you reach the sand and sun, know that the water tends to be a bit deeper at this location.  While you are catching some warm rays with fewer people around, you may be lucky enough to see some freshwater surfers enjoying the deep water and the waves.

For my local friends, here are The Seven Best Places to Have a Kid’s Birthday Party in Holland Mi

Holland Michigan Beach #4

Laketown beach.

Laketown Beach is a hidden little treasure in the Holland beach area!  The beach itself is small, making it much less crowded than some of the more popular options.  Unlike some of the more popular public beaches, though, Laketown offers free parking.

When you choose Laketown beach, be prepared for a hike up some pretty rigorous stairs and then back down on the other side of the sand dunes to reach the sandy shore of Lake Michigan.  These stairs are here to help protect the beautiful dunes along the shores of the lake.  Please note that one needs to be reasonably ambitious and in good physical condition to enjoy this experience.  If you’re looking for some good exercise, then this is the location for you!  You will not want to haul a large cooler and heavy lawn chairs to this spot.

A sailboat near sunset on Lake Michigan

The Tranquil Beach

There are no amenities available at this Holland beach.  No public restrooms, and because of the remote location, you may have a bit of difficulty getting a solid cell signal.  But what this beach lacks in creature comforts, it makes up for in beauty and tranquility.  Once you make your way onto the beach, spread out your towel, sit back, relax, and enjoy the sound of the water and the beat of the sun.

Because of this beach’s remote location and the effort it takes to access the water, you will find both the sand and water very clean and lovely, likely due to less human traffic than the more popular public beaches.  If you aren’t sure you can make it up and back down the stairs, know that you can always choose a spot to sit along the stairs, watch the water and seagulls, and even enjoy a gorgeous sunset.

Holland Michigan Beach #5

If you have a furry friend who loves to enjoy the beach’s white sand, you must check out Kirk Park.  This Holland beach is a county park situated just a few miles north of Holland State Park.  Locals love this beach in Holland for its clean sand and less crowded atmosphere.  Be sure and come in the morning for the least crowded part of the day.  This Holland beach is the perfect location for an early morning jog with your furry friend!

When you arrive at Kirk Park, you’ll find an ample parking area that comes with a small fee.  Once you’ve unloaded, you’ll find 68 acres of park and beach area, including trails with wooden stairs that take you through wooded areas of the dunes.  The park features modern bathrooms, a handicap-accessible loop through the trails, a play area for the kids, and even a horseshoe pit!  You can also enjoy a picnic at one of the shelters, picnic tables, or built-in grills.

If you’re looking for the pure white Holland beach sand, head straight for the paved path that will take you to a deck overlooking the Lake Michigan beach.  Keep going down the wooded path to access the sandy beach area that runs over 1/3 of a mile along the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

Bonus Beaches of Holland, Michigan

We’ve covered some of the most favored beaches in the area, but when I asked around for some more personal favorites from Holland residents, here’s what I found.

At the end of James Street in Holland is a small area of water access.  This area has parking for several vehicles.  The beach access is relatively limited but not busy.  If you’re looking for a location with a bit of privacy, check it out!

Saugatuck Dunes State Park is another favorite local beach in the Holland area.  Although not technically a Holland Michigan Beach, it is only about a half-hour drive south from the Holland area.  You will walk about a mile from the parking lot to the beach, but it is very peaceful.

Pier Cove Park is located just south of Saugatuck in Fennville, MI.  The area features lots of pretty rocks and shade.  Check it out, and let me know what you think in the comments below!

The Holland Beach Lovers’ Best Kept Secret!

Finally – one of the best-kept secret beaches in Holland, Michigan, is lovingly referred to as “The Bowl” and is located not far from Laketown Beach.  The Bowl is a gigantic bowl-shaped, reverse-dune.  It feels a bit like you’re in a giant bowl made of sand, hence the name.  The bowl was likely carved from the ground by a massive glacier that traversed the area millions of years ago.  It was most likely a lake before it dried into the giant sand bowl we can enjoy today.

Wrapping it Up!

After reading about the many beautiful and scenic beaches in Holland, Michigan, you can probably see why I love living in this area.  West Michigan is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful areas of the state, and dare I say, country!?  I love to travel and explore the country, but I am always happy to return to this beautiful area I call home!  Whether you’re visiting or lucky enough to live here like I do, be sure and venture out to see all of these picturesque areas, and remember to take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints! Hi, nice article but it would be nice to know how to get to the sand bowl, not just know what it’s near! I’ve heard about it for years but have never had an address!

Hi Lisa! I sure do understand your dilemma! I would love to help you out, but there is no registered address for The Bowl. Thank you for reading!
