How To Travel from Rome To the Amalfi Coast

Not far from Rome is the Amalfi Coast—it’s the pearl of Italy and definitely worth a visit. If you’re not sure how you’ll get there, don’t worry! In this guide, we show you how to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome . Plus, what to see and where to eat once you’re there.

Transportation Options To the Amalfi Coast

There are a few different ways to get from Rome to the Amalfi coast. Whether you prefer public transportation or driving yourself, read on to see which option is the best for you!

From Rome To Naples To the Amalfi Coast by Train

If you’re planning to visit the Amalfi Coast, one of your options is to take a train from Rome to Naples. At the main Roman train station (Stazione di Roma Termini) you’ll find more than one train per hour that will take you to Naples in an hour and a half.

The main train companies that provide this service are Trenitalia and Italo train. Tickets range from €17 to €70 (one way), but they are cheaper if you book in advance!

Once in Naples, you can reach the Amalfi Coast and, more specifically, Sorrento by catching the local train (Circumvesuviana) paying only €3 or €4. Get this train right at the Naples Centrale station. 

From Rome To Salerno To the Amalfi Coast by Boat

At the Roma Termini train station, jump on a train to Salerno. The company providing this service is Trenitalia, and the trip lasts two hours. Prices can vary and range from €30 to €70, depending on the time of your booking.

Once in Salerno, reaching the Amalfi Coast is simple. From the Piazza Concordia in Salerno, you can find boats that will take you to Amalfi in 35 minutes at just €8 only. Usually, there is one departure every hour, but the timetable might change, so be sure to check before going there.

From Rome To Salerno To the Amalfi Coast by Bus

From Salerno, you can opt for the bus instead of the boat to reach the Amalfi Coast. Departing from Rome, you can always find a train at Roma Termini train station that will get you to Salerno, where you will catch the bus to Amalfi.

In Salerno, head to the bus stop located in Via Vinciprova. The trip to Amalfi takes just over an hour. There are several buses departing throughout the day, either from Salerno or from Amalfi, and tickets cost €10 and are valid for 24 hours. 

From Rome To the Amalfi Coast by Car

If you’re a confident driver and like the idea of a bit more freedom, you could rent a car in Rome and drive directly to the Amalfi Coast. There are several places in Rome where you can rent a car, the most convenient may be at the Roma Termini train station. Car prices can vary and they usually depend on how in advance you book.

In a little over three hours, you’ll reach the coast. If you are afraid to miss trains and want to feel free to leave at any time, this may be the best option for you. Just keep in mind that Amalfi Coast roads are pretty small, so opt for a smaller car instead of a big one!

From Rome To Pompei To the Amalfi Coast with a Tour

If you’re planning to add some real sparkle to your Italian itinerary, you might want to consider our tour that will lead you to Pompeii first and then to Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast .

The meeting point in Rome is in Piazzale Ostiense, right outside the metro stop and under the Pyramid located in the square. Your private driver will take you to Pompeii and then on to Sorrento in a small bus, and back to Rome in the evening.

In Pompeii, you will enjoy the company of a professional archeologist who will walk you through history in this incredible place. Once in Sorrento, you will have some free time to explore the city and enjoy the Amalfi Coast vibe.

The tour will take you back to Rome in the evening, or you can organise with us to leave the tour in Sorrento where you can continue on to your Amalfi Coast accommodation by taxi.

What to visit on the amalfi coast.

Once in Amalfi, you can’t miss the wonderful beach, but there’s more to see! Pay a visit to the ancient Duomo. With its stunning facade, the cathedral is worth it—but lovers be careful! According to legend, you shouldn’t hold the hand of your partner while climbing the stairs or you’ll never get married!

I have been on the Amalfi Coast/Pompeii Tour twice; once in 2019 with my husband and now in 2024 with my daughter. It is a wonderful tour that I highly recommend. The tour guides on the bus as well as at Pompeii were friendly, fun, and provided lots of information. The views are wonderful and the lunch, views, and shopping at Positano were divine. Go and enjoy!

The “Pompeii Tour from Rome with Almalfi Coast Drive” has three excellent elements, one mediocre element, and one abysmal element. The excellent elements are the ruins of Pompeii, the official guide that joins the group in Pompeii, and the time spent (including the restaurants you can walk to) in Sorrento (when the tour is taken during the winter, otherwise it will be Amalfi). The mediocre element is the amount of driving you’ll experience (with no scenery) and the somewhat uncomfortable bus you’ll be spending about 7 hours on. The worst, and I mean almost a dealbreaker element is where you stop for a quick breakfast on the way to Pompeii. You’ll be subjected to a complete tourist trap of a minimart with prepackaged food, no marked prices, and then an astronomical bill once you’ve stood in the long line and pick out what to order. Honestly, this reflects very poorly on Walks, Devour, and City Experiences because it feels like they are not looking out for their customers and instead, subjecting them to precisely what we are paying a lot of money to NOT experience. Would it really be that hard to stop a coffee shop instead of a truck stop? There are only about 8,000 caffès to choose from between Rome and Pompeii. Seriously, what a joke and a scam. Shame on you.

I greatly enjoyed this tour from Rome to Pompeii and Positano. Our tour guide was very professional, kind, and informative. He made sure to make a stop on the way there and the way back in case anyone needed a restroom or snack. He also made a point in Positano to help familiarize the group with the area. Overall, I had a very nice time and greatly enjoyed the Pompeii portion especially!

How to Travel From Rome to the Amalfi Coast by Train, Bus, and Car

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's most popular and stunning regions, located only 172 miles (277 kilometers) from Rome . It can be found in the region of Campania, just south of Naples and not too far from Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius . Travelers can take a train or bus straight to Salerno or drive to the town of Amalfi along the winding road through the Ferriere Valley.

The Amalfi Coast is made up of many different towns , so having a car may be useful if you plan to explore, but there's also an easy-to-use bus system that runs frequently and services many of the towns on the tourist route. There are several options to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome if you don't want to drive yourself, such as taking the bus or train. The train ride to Amalfi from Rome is often much faster than driving.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Rome to the Amalfi Coast?

The absolute cheapest way to get to the Amalfi Coast is to take a regional train, which is a local train that typically runs on a commuter schedule. These fares start at $19, but they are not high-speed routes. Depending on how many stops it makes, a regional train to Salerno could take between four and five hours. Bus routes offered by Marino Bus take about the same length of time, but are slightly more expensive with tickets starting at $22.

When looking for the cheapest option, make sure to check both bus and train schedules. Although the bus may cost a few bucks more than the regional train, the route might be slightly faster with fewer scheduled stops.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Rome to the Amalfi Coast?

For not much more than the cost of the regional train, you can take a direct high-speed train from Rome to Salerno that will get you there in about two hours, 30 minutes, although sometimes direct trains can take as long as three hours. These trains are more expensive, but you'll also have the option to upgrade to first class and on-board bar service will be available.

To get to Amalfi quickly, you'll first need to catch a Trenitalia or Italo train from Roma Termini, Rome's main train station, to Stazione Salerno, the main station in Salerno. Trains run directly between the two stations from early morning until late at night. You could also take a train to Naples and then make a connection in Salerno, which may be worth a stop for a quick lunch—especially if you've never tasted Neapolitan-style pizza before.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

The roads in Amalfi are famously winding and narrow in places, especially the SS163, the Amalfi Coast road which connects the main coastal towns and offers iconic views along the way. This three-hour, 30-minute route may be difficult for a non-local driver to traverse easily.

However, you may want a car if you're staying in one of the Amalfi Coast's small villages. To drive from Rome, take the A24 Autostrada to the E45. When figuring out your budget, don't forget to factor in the cost of tolls, gas, and parking.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to the Amalfi Coast?

The fastest train, the Frecciabianca , leaves Rome every day between 6:00 a.m. and 9 p.m. If your schedule is flexible, you should book this train and plan for an early evening arrival in Amalfi, which will give you more time to check into your accommodation and rest a little before heading out in the evening. Alternatively, the fastest train to Salerno, via Italo, leaves Rome late at 6:30 p.m. and arrives at 8:11 p.m. Although it's the quickest way to get to Amalfi, this arrival may be too late for some travelers.

Summers in the Amalfi Coast can be extremely hot and especially crowded as visitors flock to the beaches. If you'd rather visit at a quieter time , you should plan a trip for the spring or fall, particularly in the months of May or September when the temperatures are still pretty warm and hotel rates are on the cheaper side. Although the Amalfi Coast is in the southern part of the country, winters can still get pretty cold with temperatures occasionally falling below freezing point—although snow is an extremely rare event.

What's the Most Scenic Route to the Amalfi Coast?

If you really want a car to get around the coast, you could also take the train to Sorrento , then pick up a rental car there. The drive between Sorrento and Salerno is undoubtedly one of the most stunning in Europe, but it does require nerves of steel. The narrow road zigzags along the coast for 50 miles (80 kilometers) as it precariously clings to cliffs high above the sea, with low or non-existent guardrails between you and the rocks ​below. The views are spectacular, but if you're driving, you'll have to be sure to keep your eye on the road instead of the scenery. 

What Is There to Do in the Amalfi Coast?

To see the Amalfi Coast properly, you should try to visit all the villages and towns that make up the coastline, from Salerno to Positano , Praiano, Amalfi , and everywhere in between. In these towns, you'll find some of the best hotels and restaurants the region has to offer. You should also make time to get a nice long day at the beach or, for something different, you can go for a hike in the mountains. This is one of the best ways to get far away from the crowds, while taking in some unique views of the coastline that most tourists don't get to see. The hike down to Fiordo di Furore from Agerola is particularly picturesque, winding past ruins, churches, and finishing at a quiet inlet that even has a small beach.

The Amalfi Coast is 172 miles from Rome. The trip takes around 3 1/2 hours in a car.

The direct high-speed train from Rome to Salerno will get you there in about 2 1/2 hours.

The high-speed train can often be the fastest and most direct way to get to Amalfi from Rome, but once you're in Amalfi, having a car is a huge perk. Driving can be the best way to get there, allowing you to stop off in villages, or even in Naples to try some Neapolitan pizza.

This Lesser-known Region of Italy Has Stunning Ocean Views, 3 National Parks, and Rolling Vineyards — and It's Just Outside Rome

Abruzzo is filled with dazzling medieval towns, rolling vineyards, and a divine food scene.

Some 30 miles away from Rome in central Italy is a region that offers travelers a world of opportunity: Abruzzo. It's filled with dazzling medieval towns, rolling vineyards, pictorial stretches of sand on the Adriatic Coast, and alpine peaks set amongst three protected national parks. It's home to 75 percent of all European animal species, flora, and fauna. In fact, it's so lush that it's often called the "green lung of Europe."

Abruzzo has four provinces: Chieti, Teramo, L’Aquila, and Pescara. I called Chieti — a hilltop town dotted with ancient streets and a coastline filled with sunbathers and fishing huts — home.

Having visited Tuscany’s famed vineyards years ago, I was excited to see what this less frequented part of central Italy had to offer, from its celebrated Montepulciano wines to its charming towns flanked by mountains and the sea.

It's easy to reach Abruzzo from international airports like Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) or Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ). Some connections are also offered through Abruzzo Airport (PSR). The Adriatic coastline is connected through high-speed railway services; the trip from Bologna Centrale to Pescara Central in Abruzzo takes a little over three hours.

I made my way to Chieti after spending a few days in bustling Rome, and the first thing to catch my eye was the lack of crowds.

Where I Stayed

I checked into Castello di Semivicoli , an 11-room, 17th-century castle surrounded by vineyards and mountain peaks that frame the sparkling Adriatic Sea. But really, I was here for the wine — the idyllic location and views were just the bonus.

The three-generation Masciarelli name is well-known in the region as the driving force for putting Abruzzo wines (like Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano ) on the map, helmed by Gianni Masciarelli. (In 2004, Masciarelli and his wife Marina Cvetic purchased Castello di Semivicoli, keeping its historical details intact, including an olive press, antique furniture, and Murano glass chandeliers.)

I spent my afternoons poolside, sipping the first Masciarelli varietal (the black fruit-driven Villa Gemma) and Cerasuolo, a zippy cherry forward rosé. Guests at Masciarelli can also take cooking lessons, a private vineyard tour, and visit former professional soccer player turned winemaker Luigi Valori’s organic vineyard in northern Abruzzo.

The pastoral and coastal location of Abruzzo makes for a diverse cuisine of seafood, legumes, and meats ranging from mutton to pork. Thinly salted mutton skewers, called arrosticini , are one of the region’s most popular.

Don’t miss a visit to a sagre (local fair), for a chance to try ventricina (hot spicy salami), artichokes, and freshly baked bread.

Abruzzo has produced handmade spaghetti alla chitarra for more than 200 years. It's often served with a tomato sauce made with miniature meatballs, called  sugo di pallottine .

A popular seafood dish is brodetto alla pescarese , which is a stew made of slow-cooked tomatoes, pepperoncini, garlic, and small fish ranging from mullet to skate wings.

For sweet tooth satiation, two well-known desserts of the region include sugar-coated almonds (called confetti), and a soft chocolate nougat from L’Aquila, called torrone nurzia .

Outdoor enthusiasts will find several activities in Abruzzo. In the medieval mountain hamlet of Castel del Monte sits Gran Sasso National Park, a biodiverse playground accessible for children, elderly people, and visitors with mobility limitations. Marked as a protected area since 1995, the park is filled with olive groves, almond trees, and areas dedicated to mountain biking and horseback riding. Campo Imperatore plateau, often called Abruzzo’s "Little Tibet" because of its comparable Himalayan views, is also in Gran Sasso and accessible year-round.

Along the coast, a 26-mile back path called Via Verde leads to the Trabocchi coast, where fisherman huts on water stilts line the sea like wooden octopus’ in the distance. A dinner of grilled seafood paired with Vini Valori wines at Trabocco Valle Grotte , suspended over the water during a multi-colored sunset, remains one of the greatest moments of my trip.

Also along the Trabocchi coastline, Punta Aderci Nature Reserve is a protected enclave of dunes, beaches, and clifftops where you can bike along a path or grab a seat on its pebbly sand.

The Wines of Abruzzo

Never one to shy away from a wine tasting or two, I eagerly leaned into learning more about Abruzzo’s varietals. After all, its proximity to the sea and the Apennine Mountains creates an ideal Mediterranean climate for growing wine, and there are approximately 250 wineries in the region that produce roughly 1.2 million bottles per year.

I was off to a good start in Chieti, as the area produces the majority of wines in Abruzzo, including the coveted DOC label, which notes the highest level of quality assurance. While Tuscany is well known for its Vino Sangiovese grape used to make its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, in Abruzzo, it’s all about the full-bodied Montepulciano grape. (Montepulciani d’Abruzzo represents approximately 80 percent of the region’s wine, followed by Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Pecorino, and Cerasuolo–an Abruzzo rosé.)

At Masciarelli, visitors can tour the barrel rooms and then have a curated tasting at Castello di Semivicoli , paired with typical Abbruzzese food. The region’s dry and herbal white wine, Trebbiano, is a good complement to the fragrant seafood stews and fried foods of the region.

Fifth-generation Pasetti Winery and guest home is elevated 1,800 feet above sea level in the village of Pescosansonesco, inside the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. It’s an ideal location to spend a day immersed in nature and several varietals. Their Pecorino is filled with aromas of grapefruit and pairs well with just about any seafood dish.

Getting Around Rome

The best way to get around Rome is on foot. And because many of the best attractions are clustered together in traffic-free zones, walking makes the most sense. However, some places, like Vatican City, are pretty far from the central historic district, necessitating the use of the metro or a taxi. A nonstop express train (the Leonardo Express) can take you from the Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO) to the Rome Termini railway station in a little more than 30 minutes; one-way tickets cost 14 euros (about $17). Buses are also available, but these aren't recommended because of crowded conditions aboard and heavy traffic outside. If you must bring a car to Rome, you should park it as soon as possible once you enter the city limits. Otherwise, you'll find heavy traffic, impatient drivers and pedestrian-only areas make driving around virtually impossible.
