An art city on the Swiss-German-French border, Basel is a pretty settlement filled with traditional Swiss architecture, plenty of historical museums, and lots of local food. And, if you’re looking to explore central Europe for a couple of days, then it’s the perfect place to base yourself for trips into central Switzerland, across to France, and over to Germany. Here are 10 magical day trips from Basel , northern Switzerland!

10 of the most magical and best day trips from Basel, Switzerland: fairytale towns, Swiss architecture and visits to Germany and France!

If you’re looking for even more information and inspiration, then be sure to check out our guide to the best-kept secrets of Switzerland .

#2 geneva, switzerland, #3 strasbourg, france, #4 lucerne, switzerland, #5 château du haut-koenigsbourg, france, #6 zurich, switzerland, #7 neu-falkenstein & alt-falkenstein, switzerland, #8 lausanne, switzerland, #9 bern, switzerland, #10 colmar, france, enjoyed reading about the best day trips from basel pin it now, read it again later:, best day trips from basel.

The vibrant city of Freiburg im Breisgau, often shortened to just ‘Freiburg’ has a population of around 220,000 residents, meaning that it’s pretty substantial in size and has plenty going on.

Located just south of the Black Forest, the university city is around two hours away from Basel via public transport. Once there, you’ll find that there are plenty of museums to visit as well as plenty of historical buildings to wander around.

Other highlights of Freiburg im Breisagu include admiring the Romanesque Cathedral which took three hundred years to build, and visiting the Münsterplatz, which holds a regular local farmers’ market.

Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany

Located lakeside, Geneva is one of the prettiest cities in Switzerland and is best known for its connections with chocolate, luxury goods, as well as its number of 5-star hotels. However, given Geneva’s location around two and a half hours from Basel by car, there are certainly closer day trips to the city to be taken!

But then again, if you want to see the birthplace of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, or experience the iconic fountain of the Jet d’Eau for yourself, then you simply must head to Geneva!

Other highlights of Geneva include a historic old town (complete with cobbled lanes) and the 12th-century St Pierre Cathedral (which offers fantastic views over the rest of the city) . As Switzerland can be pretty expensive, I’ve put together a  useful guide to visiting Geneva on a budget.

Most beautiful places in Switzerland: Geneva

For Francophiles, the fairytale French town of Strasbourg probably needs no introduction! Small riverways wend their way alongside timber-framed houses and candy coloured façades pop at every corner; all of which makes for great photo opportunities.

Often referred to as ‘Petite France,’ highlights of Strasbourg include medieval architecture and lots of local cuisine (think plenty of cheeses and wines).

Located under an hour and a half from Basel via either public transport or your own car, Strasbourg makes for the perfect day trip from Basel! For more wanderlust inspiration from this French city, be sure to check out this  free and self-guided Strasbourg walking tour

How to Visit Strasbourg Astronomical Clock in Strasbourg, the Alsace, East of France

If you’re looking for a magical day trip from Basel that’s within Switzerland itself, then you need to look no further than Lucerne (also known as Luzern in German) . Lying alongside a body of water of the same name, Lake Lucerne, this pretty city is full of fairytale architecture and quaint eateries serving local produce.

Nestled under snow-topped Mount Pilatus, in the summer months, there are plenty of water activities on offer, while the winter months offer the opportunity to visit one of the best Christmas markets in Europe.

Luzerne is easily one of the best day trips from Basel if you’re looking for a taste of fairytale Switzerland, and the city can be reached in just over an hour should you opt for a fast train. One particular highlight of the city which really stands out is the Chapel Bridge and Water Tower Lucerne, which is the oldest wooden bridge of its kind in Europe.

The fortified château du Haut-Koenigsbourg is a medieval castle in the entire Upper Rhine Valley area, a region well known for its stunning castles, including the ones at Alt-Eberstein, Dahn, and Badenweiler, among others.

Humans have inhabited the rock for centuries, as proven by a document issued by Charlemagne in the 8th-century. The Bundsandstein Rock was then home to a monastery before a later castle was constructed (though no one is completely clear on the dates.)

The day trip from Basel to the medieval Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg only takes around an hour each way by car, and is well worth the time spent driving! After all, a visit to the castle can easily be combined with a trip to the fairytale town of Colmar, which is en route!

Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, France

Often mistaken as the Capital of Switzerland (the Swiss Confederation doesn’t actually have an ‘official capital’ at all), with a metropolitan population of over 1.8 million people, Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland, and as a result, is packed with things to see and do.

Zurich can be found around an hour from Basel by either car or public transport (both take exactly the same time), making it an easy day trip from Basel.

Highlights of Zurich include various water activities on Lake Zurich, as well as visiting all of the various medieval churches and cathedrals dotted around the city. For those seeking a quirkier side to the city, there are plenty of trendy bars and unique stores to discover.

The twin Swiss castles of Neu-Falkenstein & Alt-Falkenstein are located around three-quarters of an hour from Basel by car. The impressive ruins of Neu-Falkenstein were constructed by a wealthy family in the 12th-century and are now open to the public.

Nearby, a seasonal heritage museum operates in the restored medieval fortifications of the Schloss Alt-Falkenstein. Elsewhere in the surrounding area, stunning hiking trails showcase the beauty of this mountainous country.

Neu-Falkenstein

On the same lake as Geneva, just across the water from the well-known town of Evian-Les-Bains (where Evian water comes from!) , Lausanne is a typically Swiss city that’s best known for its impressive cathedral (said to be the most beautiful example of Gothic architecture in Switzerland)

Other notable attractions include Lausanne’s punctual clock in the heart of the old town, and the city’s stunning views onto the Alps. The city is also well worth a trip if you’re interested in sports; Lausanne is home to a Winter Olympics Museum and the city has strong ties to the games.

Most beautiful places in Switzerland: Lausanne

Bern is often cited as one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland , and it’s easy to see why! Often referred to as the stand-in ‘capital of Switzerland’ as this is where all of the Cantons convene, Bern is a pretty city with plenty to see and do.

Highlights of Bern include a visit to the world-famous rose garden and a stroll around the Bern Münster (cathedral) , which has the highest spire in Switzerland. Elsewhere in the city, the Bern Historical Museum is said to be one of the best cultural offerings in all of Switzerland.

Bern Switzerland

With its pretty timber-framed façades and gently flowing river, a visit to Colmar is easily one of the best day trips from Basel. Best seen around Christmas time, when the mulled wine is flowing and the French stalls are at their best, Colmar is a magical town that’s well worth the two hours or so train ride from Basel.

After all, some of the best things to do in Colmar include visiting its toy museum, exploring one of the city’s many art museums, or simply strolling alongside the pretty riverside.

Other highlights of this fairytale town include a local museum housed with a former convent and strolling around ‘La Petite Venise,’ a pretty as a postcard Venice lookalike neighbourhood.

What’s more is that there are plenty of  hidden gems in Colmar you’ll love to visit! For more inspiration, check out our suggestions for o ne day in Colmar .

Europe’s most powerful waterfall is  Rheinfall  (or Rhine Falls). Rhine Falls is located in  Neuhausen  in the canton of  Schaffhausen . Not only is it beautiful and powerful, but it is also considered the largest in Europe.

Lucerne

The beautiful city of Lucerne is without a doubt one of the best day trips from Basel you can make. You can take a direct train from the Basel train station and be in Lucerne in just an hour.

The city has quite a few attractions, so it’s best to head there early in the morning to have enough time to see everything, especially if you want to go to a museum or two. Walk along the iconic Chapel Bridge and admire the art, see the spectacular Lion Monument, and the famous Bourbaki Panorama Lucerne .

Lucerne is home to the Swiss Museum of Transport, the Swiss Chocolate Adventure, the Lucerne Glacier Garden, and the Sammlung Rosengart art museum . Those are just a few of the most popular museums in town but know that there are many more worth visiting.

Also, try to find time for at least a short boat ride on Lake Lucerne. It’s a touristy thing to do in the city, but it’s a wonderful experience and offers some of the best panoramic views you can experience in the area.

Bern Old Town

Bern is about an hour away from Basel by train, and it’s one of the best day trips to make if you enjoy exploring big cities. With an old town that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site , excellent museums, a world-famous rose garden, and beautiful panoramic views, Bern, just like Basel , has plenty to offer whether you’re there for a day or a week.

Don’t miss out on a chance to see the Bern Bear Pit – you’ll understand better why Switzerland’s capital city bears its name. And if you are interested in Bern’s best museums, definitely go to the Museum of Communication, the Alpine Museum of Switzerland , the Fine Arts Museum , and the Bern Historical Museum . They’re the most popular ones, but certainly not the only options you have in the city.

But if you’re only there for a day, you’ll want to head straight to Zurich’s old town. See Bahnhofstrasse , Fraumunster , Grossmunster , St. Peter’s Church , the Lindenhof , the Opera House , Urania Sternwarte , and, of course, Lake Zurich.

When it comes to museums, Zurich has something for everyone’s interests and it will be hard to choose just one. Go with Kunsthaus Zurich or the National Swiss Museum if you want to learn more about the history and culture of the region.

On the other hand, visit Uhnrenmuseum Beyer to learn about the watchmaking tradition and experience something different. There’s also the FIFA Museum , which is an absolute must for all lovers of football.

mount pilatus

The Swiss Alps are the highlight of most trips to Switzerland and you can easily explore parts of the mountain range on day trips from Basel. You can follow popular itineraries like the Golden Round Trip , or you can create your own itinerary, based on the things you’re most interested in seeing.

Mount Pilatus near Lucerne is the closest mountain of the Emmental Alps that you can easily visit on a day trip from Basel. The mountain is easily accessible by gondolas and cable cars from Alpnach, which you can reach in about an hour and a half from Basel.

Enjoy sweeping views of Lake Lucerne and the Emmental Valley from the top of Mount Pilatus, and explore some of the hiking trails in the area if you want. There’s also a restaurant at the top, so you don’t have to worry about food and drinks while you’re there.

geneva

Geneva is one of the largest cities in Switzerland and well worth a visit if you have plenty of time in Basel. It takes almost three hours to reach Geneva from Basel by train; it’s a long journey but the train ride is quite scenic so the time passes rather quickly if you focus on the changing Swiss landscapes.

Situated on the shore of the wonderful Lake Geneva, the namesake city is known for quite a few tourist attractions. A beautiful old town, excellent museums, and some of the best luxury shopping opportunities in Switzerland are just some of the ways you can spend your time in Geneva.

Don’t miss out on Jet d’Eau , the city’s iconic water fountain that lights up at night. Jardin Anglais is another iconic Geneva sight – the lakeshore park offers beautiful panoramic views and is famous for its flower clocks.

Lausanne

Lausanne is a gorgeous city on the northern shore of Lake Geneva. It’s a little more than two hours away from Basel by train, so you can easily visit it on a day trip. I would recommend taking one of the earliest trains possible because it’s a big city with lots to see and do.

Lausanne is the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, and it’s home to an excellent Olympic Museum . Definitely visit it if you usually enjoy touring museums and you want to see something unique.

The Swiss city also boasts a hilly old town with countless historic buildings, an imposing Gothic cathedral, and quite a few beautiful parks. If you want to experience a stunning scenic view of the Lausanne panorama, head to Sauvabelin Tower , which is a 20-minute bus ride from the heart of the city.

Gruyeres

Gruyères is a fairly long train ride from Basel (about two and a half hours), but it’s worth the time if you want to visit a lovely medieval town. Best known for the namesake cheese that’s an essential part of the Swiss Fondue, a day trip to Gruyeres is the perfect opportunity to stuff yourself with the most popular cheese in the country.

Don’t miss out on the Gruyères fortress either. It offers spectacular panoramic views from its walls as well as exhibits on the history and culture of the region. On top of that, this lovely little town is also known for a museum and bar dedicated to H. R. Giger, and they’re an absolute must-see if you’re a fan of the Alien movies.

Interlaken from above

Travelers who prefer to spend their time exploring the great outdoors should head to Interlaken . The city is two hours away from Basel by train, and it’s definitely worth the long trip if you’re up for an exciting day full of adventures.

Interlaken is known for its abundance of hiking trails, mountain biking trails, rafting opportunities, skydiving, bungee jumping, paragliding, etc. If it’s a fun adventure that can be done outdoors, you’ll find somewhere to do it Interlaken.

The city is nestled between lakes Thun and Brienz, so the views are absolutely magical no matter where you look. Head to Harder Kulm either by hiking trail or funicular, for the absolute best panoramic views of Interlaken and the surrounding landscapes.

Basel Old Town: Visit Switzerland’s Capital of Culture

Colmar, france.

Colmar

Colmar is a charming French town some 40-50 minutes away from Basel by train. It’s best known for its well-preserved old town with beautiful buildings and charming cobblestone alleys. The Dominican Church and St. Martin’s Church are two of the most impressive architectural landmarks in the town, and well worth visiting while you’re in Colmar.

The French small town is also known for its great museums, the most famous of which is the Unterlinden Museum . It is situated in the former building of a Dominican convent and boasts an extensive collection that covers the region’s history. Other popular museums in town include Musée du Jouet (toy museum), Choco-Story Colmar , and The Village Hansi & its Museum .

Also, make sure to check out the part of the historic old town that’s known as Little Venice. It boasts a canal that runs through the narrow town street and it’s absolutely wonderful to look at.

Freiburg, Germany

Freiburg

Freiburg is a vibrant town in Germany best known for its medieval city center. It’s about 40 minutes away from Basel by train, so a great place you can easily visit on a day trip from the Swiss city.

Freiburg is a university city so it’s very popular with younger crowds. There are lots of pubs and bars in the city that cater to young adults, as well as many international restaurants. Nature lovers can also enjoy their time in Freiburg; Schlossberg is a hiking area just outside the city center, which offers panoramic views of Freiburg’s old town.

In terms of tourist attractions other than the beautiful old town, the university city is known for its excellent museums and beautiful parks and gardens. The Freiburg Cathedral is truly a Gothic masterpiece and one of the best architectural landmarks in the German city.

Best Walking Tours In Basel (Culture, Art & Cobblestones)

Frequently asked questions, how many days do you need in basel.

That depends on how you want to spend your time in the Swiss city. If you just want to explore the most popular tourist attractions and the best museums in Basel , you can do it in 2-3 days. But if you’re up for Basel day trips and exploring central and northern Switzerland, then you can easily spend a week or more in the city.

Where can I go from Basel by train?

You can go to most cities and towns in northern and central Switzerland from Basel by train. The Swiss city is well connected not just to other Swiss cities, but also to places in Germany and France by railway.

What beautiful French town is near Basel?

Mulhouse and Colmar are two beautiful towns in France that are very close to Basel. Colmar is already covered in this guide, so let’s talk about Mulhouse for a bit. It’s closer to Basel than Colmar, and you can reach it in only some 20 minutes by train.

The town is small but very charming. It’s got a few interesting tourist attractions, a beautiful historic center, and a few interesting museums. The National Automobile Museum is one of the most popular attractions in town, with a collection of more than 500 vehicles, including racing cars.

What is the closest German town to Basel?

Weil am Rhein is the closest German town to Basel. It’s only one train stop away from the Basel Bad train station in the northern city area, and you can be there in less than five minutes.

However, it’s a very small town and a commune and there’s really not much there for tourists I would recommend heading to Lorrach instead if you really want to go to Germany. The town is just 10 minutes away by train (from the Basel Bad station), and it’s a little bigger with more things to do and see.

The cathedral was constructed between 1019 and 1500, and the design is in Gothic and Romanesque architectural style.

Although its origins were as a Catholic cathedral, today it is a Reformed Protestant church.

We highly recommend popping inside (access is completely free). The cathedral interiors are beautiful with stained glass windows, 3 naves, and a transept. You will also find a crypt here with graves dating back to 1000 AD.

During our visit, we also paid to access the church towers to take in the views of the city, river Rhine and the beautiful old town surroundings.

Views from the Basel Cathedral Tower

Access the church towers for a 6 CHF entry fee per person, and you can pay for it on-site.

The square or the Platz outside the church is always bustling with visitors and locals alike taking in the view of Old Town and the greenery surrounding it.

Visit the Basel Fine Arts Museum – Kunstmuseum

The next item on the Basel one day itinerary is one of the premier fine arts museums in the world – the Kunstmuseum.

Paintings inside Kunstmuseum

The Kunstmuseum is one of the oldest public arts institutions, dating back to 1661. The museum complex is huge and is spread across three buildings exhibiting paintings, drawings, and artworks from the 1400s to the 21st century.

The main building of the Kunstmuseum Basel was designed by Rudolf Christ and Paul Bonatz in the 1930s.

Here you will find over 4,000 paintings, sculptures, and installations, along with over 300,000 drawings and prints – with many dating back to the Middle Ages.

Kunstmuseum

There is also an impressive collection of works by Symbolist, Impressionist, and post-Impressionist artists. You will also find works of Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, and Vincent van Gogh, among others.

To explore the main building we recommend that you set aside at least 2 hours. Entry to the museum is included in the Swiss Travel Pass .

St. Alban Tal is perfect for a late afternoon stroll in a leafy boulevard soaking in the beauty of Basel. If you have time on your hands, be sure to stop at the medieval paper mill and the Museum of Contemporary Arts.

Now St. Albans is famous for one of the three historic city gates of Basel, called the Sankt-Alban-Tor or the Gate of Saint Alban.

While enjoying your stroll do check off this iconic Basel landmark from your day trip itinerary.

There were 6 city gates in Basel, but only three of them remained – Sankt-Alban-Tor, Spalentor or Gate of Spalen, and the Sankt-Johanns-Tor.

Spalentor Gate is the prettiest and also elaborative, but for the purposes of this itinerary visit the Sankt-Alban-Tor before calling it a day.

At this point, you can conclude your Basel day trip and return to Zurich. If you are planning to stay in Basel overnight, head over to Old Town for some dinner and drinks.

There are lots of traditional Swiss and international restaurants where you can enjoy a nice dinner.

Where to Stay in Basel

The best area to stay in Basel is the Old Town (Altstadt), not only because of its location but also because it’s home to many of the city’s points of interest.

I stayed at  The Passage Hotel , situated only a minute from Steinenvorstadt, a lovely street in the old town packed with restaurants, cafes, and shops. Also, the train station Basel SBB is just one bus stop away.

The hotel’s staff made me feel very welcome, and my room was bright, spacious, and comfortable, so I would definitely go back for another stay. You can  read more reviews on The Passage Hotel here .

Fun fact:  If you book a hotel in Basel, you get the  Basel Card  when you check in. With the card, you can use public transportation for free and get a 50% discount at the city’s museums. Even the journey from the airport or train station is free with your hotel booking confirmation email.

Zurich, Switzerland

By Josh from A Backpacker’s World

One of the best day trips from Basel by train is to the Swiss city of Zürich. Many mistakenly believe it is the capital city of Switzerland, but it isn’t. Though it definitely feels like a capital city when you visit.

The train takes just over 1 hour and leaves from Basel SBB straight to Zürich HB. There are only 5-6 stops between, and it’s an extremely scenic train journey through the countryside, passing through some small towns.

There are lots of reasons to visit Zürich. It’s a place with a lot of history and culture, and you only need to look as far as the  language in Zürich  to catch a glimpse.

Another reason to visit Zürich is because it has a perfect mix of natural beauty and architectural beauty.

Zürich Lake offers the perfect place to relax and watch the swans swim past with a view of the Alps in the background on clear days. And then you have the beauty of the Fraumünster and Grossmünster just a few minutes walk away.

It’s also very walkable, and you can see everything in half a day, making it the perfect day trip destination.

Travel time: 1 hour. Top tour in Zurich: A walking tour of the Old Town . Save time and book your train ticket from Basel to Zurich in advance.

By Kristin from Global Travel Escapades

Another fantastic place to visit if you’re in Basel is the picturesque city of Interlaken! Perfect for a day trip, this city is located between two stunning lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and offers a variety of activities.

For starters, you can participate in an  adrenaline-inducing activity, such as paragliding ,  which allows you to take in views of the city from above!

Or, you can hike to the top of Harder Kulm and admire the incredible panoramic views. This hike takes about 2.5 hours to complete and is moderate in difficulty.

Alternatively, if you prefer something more relaxed, take a stroll along the river Aare! This river has a bright turquoise color and makes the perfect backdrop for beautiful pictures!

Just be sure to wear lots of sunscreen as the altitude means the sun is more intense!

Bern, Switzerland

By Iris from Mind of a Hitchhiker

Just a one-hour domestic train ride away from Basel is Switzerland’s  de facto capital city Bern . It’s Switzerland’s fifth biggest city and the perfect size for a day trip or one overnight hotel stay to get free public transit with the Bern Ticket.

Upon leaving the train station, it’s a short walk to the stately Swiss government building. From the Bundeshaus, there are wonderful views of the Aare River, which wraps around the Old City or Altstadt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One legend of the city name tells that Bern was named after the first animal a duke shot in 1191: a bear. You’ll notice a lot of bear-themed things in the city, such as the flag, the bear statue at the famous astronomical clock Zytglogge and the bear pit Bärengraben. There you can see the city’s small bear population forage and wander.

For the best vistas of the entire city, take the tram away from the center to the Gurtenbahn funicular and walk up the observation tower. If you’re visiting on a particularly hot summer day, make sure to pack a bathing suit to go for a swim in the Aare River as the locals do.

Travel time: 1 hour. Save time and book your train ticket from Basel to Bern in advance.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

By Zoe from Together In Switzerland

For a wonderful day trip south of Basel, consider taking the train to Bellinzona in Switzerland. The quickest and most direct route takes 2 hours and 39 minutes, so a long but enjoyable day trip is possible!

Bellinzona is quite a highlight to visit, located in the sunniest canton of Switzerland.

You can practice your Italian here as it’s the main language, compared to the rest of Switzerland with German or French. Bellinzona is the capital of the Ticino canton, where  there are many things to see  and do while visiting.

To start with, Bellinzona is beautifully known for its 3 UNESCO World Heritage castles that are dotted in and around the city.

Given this title in 2000, you can visit all in one day (by walking or local transport), with all castle grounds and walls being free to wander. They all have something unique, with a museum or exhibit you can attend to learn more.

If you can, visit on a Saturday for the local market, where they sell local treats like honey, wine, and Swiss cheeses! You could also grab some snacks and choose a local walking tour around the city and river.

For a sit-down restaurant, consider a table at  il Piazza Ristorante  at the Piazza della Foca. They have some great local options as well as many Italian cuisine dishes.

Travel time: 2 hours and 40 minutes. Top tour in Bellinzona: A combo ticket of the three castles of Bellinzona . Save time and book your train ticket from Basel to Bern in advance.

Colmar, France

To get a taste of what France’s oldest wine route, the Alsace Wine Route , has to offer, take a day trip from Basel to Colmar, a fairytale town surrounded by dreamy villages and countless vineyards.

The medieval town boasts stunning architecture with half-timbered houses, quirky decorations, and Gothic and Renaissance landmarks like St Martin’s Church and Maison Pfister.

You can also stay the night in Colmar and spend a day exploring postcard-perfect Alsatian villages like Eguisheim, Riquewihr, and Kaysersberg (using the Kutzig hop-on hop-off bus, which has a circular route starting in Colmar).

Travel time: 45 minutes. Top tour in Colmar: Walking tour with wine tasting . Save time and book your train ticket from Basel to Colmar in advance.

Freiburg Im Breisgau, Germany

By Sharon from Germany Footsteps

Freiburg im Breisgau (or just Freiburg) is the perfect place for a day trip from Basel.

In just 40 minutes by train, you can be exploring a slice of Germany. Located in the famous Black Forest, it’s a pretty city with plenty to do in the city itself and its surroundings.

Freiburg started life in 1091 when a castle was built on Schlossberg (Castle Hill) to control the nearby trade routes. This resulted in a settlement growing at the foot of the hill in what is today the Old Town area of Freiburg. Freiburg was then founded in 1120.

The castle itself no longer exists, but you walk up and around Schlossberg with some great trails, and you can find old ruins of the forts and the castle that used to exist here.

Another must-visit is the Old Town. It’s a great mix of old and new, as much was destroyed in World War II. It’s a fantastic place to wander with the Dreisam River on one side and Schlossberg on the other.

Make sure you visit Freiburger Münster (Cathedral), which dates back to the 13th century. There are also amazing museums, old city gates, and more to visit as  you walk about Freiburg’s Old Town.

If you want to experience the Black Forest, there are also some great hiking trails starting from Freiburg.

Travel time: 40 minutes. Top tour in Freiburg: Freiburg city tour . Save time and book your train ticket from Basel to Freiburg in advance.

The history of Karlsruhe dates back to June 17th, 1715, when Margrave Charles III William of Baden-Durlach dreamt of founding a new city under a tree.

Your journey begins at the Karlsruhe Palace and the Badisches Landes Museum inside, immersing yourself in the city’s past. Don’t miss the stunning views of the ‘Fan City’ from the palace’s roof tower.

Venture into the lush Palace Gardens and the majestic Botanical Garden, offering a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. Take a train ride around the gardens for a leisurely tour.

Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, France

The medieval Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle is a must-see historical landmark in Alsace, offering gorgeous panoramic views of the Vosges Mountains, the Plain of Alsace, and even the Black Forest.

Throughout the centuries, it was owned by the Hohenstaufen dynasty, the Counts of Thierstein, and the Swedish Empire, until it was reconstructed by the German emperor Wilhelm II at the beginning of the 20th century.

During your visit, you can tour the chateau’s rooms at your own pace and learn about its history while also taking in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes and the enchanting architecture.

To get to Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, you need to take the train from Basel to the town of Selestat, where a shuttle bus (number 500) can take you from the train station to the castle.

Using the shuttle bus also gives you a discount of 2 euros at the castle ( browse its latest prices and timetables here ).

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

By Martha from May Cause Wanderlust

Lauterbrunnen is a picturesque village in a steep-sided U-shaped valley at the foot of the Bernese Alps.

One day in Lauterbrunnen  will be filled with classic Swiss beauty: stunning views of waterfalls, impossibly steep mountains, and quaint wooden chalets.

The village itself is so pretty: there’s a church with a steeple next to a gushing river; you could walk up to Staubbach Falls, the highest free-falling waterfall in Switzerland.

There are also some scenic hiking and cycling routes in the surrounding countryside. And there are several cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy classic Swiss fare like raclette and rosti.

You could also take advantage of the mountain trains and cable cars to explore some of the mountainside attractions, such as the car-free hamlets of Mürren, Wengen, and Kleine Scheidegg.

And if you set off from Basel early enough, you might even be able to fit in a visit to Jungfraujoch, a high-altitude observation station offering panoramic views across mountains and the Aletsch Glacier.

The journey here from Lauterbrunnen is about an hour and 40 minutes, so it does take some time to visit Jungfraujoch, but the journey itself has stunning scenery all the way.

To get to Lauterbrunnen from Basel by train, you’ll travel first to Interlaken and then change for a short train ride to Lauterbrunnen.

Total travel time: 2.5 hours. Save time and book your train ticket from Basel to Lauterbrunnen in advance.

Liechtenstein

By Paul from Paulmarina

The principality of Liechtenstein is a micronation in Europe. In fact, it’s the 6th smallest nation in the world and one that you can easily visit on a day trip from Basel.

Its capital, Vaduz, is known for its contemporary and modern art scene and, as a fan, you will appreciate the street art and the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein.

With that, you will also immerse yourself in the history of the nation, with its proud postal stamp traditions and medieval castles and ruins.

I highly recommend taking part in a wine-tasting session. The prince’s own winery will introduce you to the top Rhine Valley wine domain, and perhaps you might even encounter Princess Marie on your visit.

To get to Liechtenstein, take the direct SBB train IC3 from Basel and get out at Sargans, a Swiss border town. From there, grab a short bus ride to Vaduz.

The complete trip doesn’t take longer than 2 1/2 hours, giving you plenty of time for the top  things to do in Liechtenstein .

Total travel time: 2.5 hours. Save time and book your train ticket from Basel to Sargans in advance.

Triberg, Germany

By Angie from We’re Not in Kansas Anymore

Triberg, located in the Black Forest Region of Germany, is an easy train ride from Basel. There’s enough to do in this small town to fill an enjoyable day trip itinerary.

Triberg is the quintessential “Black Forest” with dense forests and all the wonderful things associated with this popular region of Germany.

Colorful shops line the main street in town, where you can shop for quality handcrafted cuckoo clocks. You won’t want to miss the world’s largest (and smallest) working cuckoo clock.

Try some savory Black Forest ham and finish off your meal with a piece of delicious Black Forest cake, which was invented right here!

No visit to Triberg  is complete without a trip to the famous Triberg Waterfall, one of Germany’s highest.

Take a short, dreamy trail through the forest, where you’ll experience babbling brooks, moss-covered rocks, and wooden bridges and walkways. Your reward at the end is the stunning Triberg Waterfalls!

Total travel time: 2.5 hours. Save time and book your train ticket from Basel to Triberg in advance.

When you visit, you should spend time wandering through the old town and be sure to take in the iconic Chapel Bridge. Lucerne is also a great base to explore the rest of central Switzerland, by ascending either Mount Pilatus or taking a casual boat trip around Lake Lucerne.

Rötteln Castle

A short trip across the German border near the city of Lörrach are the ruins of Rötteln Castle , which sits on a mountain spur, surrounded by forests and plenty of greenery. It’s mostly in ruins, but the tower remains intact; a climb up its stairs offers great views of the surrounding countryside.

Rhine Falls

You won’t find a bigger waterfall in all of Europe. At their peak, the Rhine Falls is a mass of white froth as hundreds of litres of water tumble 23 metres (75.5 feet), all along a 150-metre (492-foot) expanse. The falls are best experienced by a boat ride, but there are plenty of viewing platforms on either side of the river’s banks.

Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg

Haut-Koenigsbourg

The rocky perch of the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg couldn’t be better for enjoying views of the Upper Rhine Plains. It’s not known when the castle was built, but it may have been around since the 12th century. The castle has seen a rich and dramatic history as it’s changed hands frequently over the years and was the seat of princes, warlords and bandits, resulting in a long period of decline. Restored at the beginning of the 20th century, the Haut-Koenigsbourg now sees 500,000 visitors pass through its gateway every year. The journey takes around one hour from Basel.

You can reach the buzzing city of Zurich in under an hour from Basel. Switzerland’s biggest city is often mistaken for its capital, and it certainly has that busy feel to it. On a day trip, you can choose from a number of great things to do, whether you want to visit some of Switzerland’s best museums, tour the historic old town or head to the Bahnhofstrasse, the country’s premier shopping street.

15 Things To Do In Basel, Switzerland & Best Day Trips

Europe , Switzerland , Travel | August 31, 2017

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may make a small commission if you buy anything mentioned here. It doesn't cost you anything extra.

Basel is a pocket-sized Swiss metropolis where locals commute to work with a swim in the River Rhine during the warmer months. No, seriously. They really do, and they don’t mind if visitors join in!

In this teeny city, you can saunter from urban cityscape to idyllic residential streets in just moments.Yet Basel doesn’t seem to be on many travellers’ bucket lists (yet)!

I spent a few days in Basel to uncover what the city has to offer and found there are some unusual things to do in Basel alongside the expected tourist attractions.

Best things to do in Basel in summer

In this mammoth guide to visiting Basel in summer, I’ve covered all of the things that make Basel unique, what to do in Basel on a short trip plus where to eat and sleep. At the bottom of this guide, I’ve also included a list of the best tours and day trips from Basel.

Top things to do in Basel, Switzerland

I hope this inspires you to book a trip to Basel, because I really fell in love with the city and can’t believe more people aren’t raving about it!

When you arrive, it’s worth booking a one-hour tour with a local to familiarise yourself with the city before you go it alone.

1. Culture vultures can overdose on Basel’s museums

With over 40 museums and exhibition centres plus some world-renowned annual festivals, Basel delivers a hefty dose of culture, whatever type of traveller you class yourself as. The museums are some of the top places to go in Basel.

Don’t miss the Fondation Beyeler , a modern art museum set in serene verdant surroundings. Alternatively, unleash your inner child at the Dollhouse Museum .

You certainly won’t be short of indoor things to do in Basel on a rainy day!

Museums in Basel

2. Get to know Basel’s arty side

Basel is famed for its annual Art Basel festival so exploring the creative offering in the city is one of the best things to do in Basel. Book an art tour with a local to discover all the best gems.

I managed to stumble upon a street artist doing his thing during my trip, proving that Basel values   the arts, in any shape or form.

3. Hunt for Basel’s water fountains

Basel is dotted with fountains (314, if we’re being exact), and you can drink the water from all except one – the intricate Tingueley Fountain, which was created in 1977 by artist Jean Tingueley.

Its shallow basin stands where the old city theatre stage once stood, and its various sculptures are in constant motion, to represent the artists that once moved around the stage here. It’s especially interesting on a cold day in winter, when the water can freeze into intricate ice sculptures.

Art fountain in Basel, Switzerland

The easiest way to tick all of the fountains off your list is to do a city bus tour of Basel (check prices here ). Especially handy if the weather isn’t on your side but you want to zoom around Basel’s tourist attractions!

4. Spot Basel’s modern architecture

Basel somehow packs old and new architecture in side-by-side to great effect, which results in some happy surprises for tourists sightseeing in Basel.

Basel’s modern architecture reaches its peak at the Exhibition Centre , where a circular skylight lets light flood in to the outdoor entrance.

5. See some of Basel’s oldest buildings

And then there’s Rathaus City Hall. This colourful building has been the seat of Basel’s government since the canton joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501 and its bright red facade makes it impossible to miss. Even if you’re only in the city for one afternoon, this is the big thing to see in Basel.

In the atmospheric inner courtyard, you’ll see a statue of a Roman colonel – see if you can spot his trendy red undies! People say that this guy was the city of Basel’s founder, but that’s actually not true.

City hall in Basel

Basel Minster’s red sandstone walls can be seen from across the Rhine, and it’s a focal point in the cityscape. Its arched windows overlook the river and there’s an interesting metal sculpture in the courtyard.

Top tip: some of Basel older buildings’ facades are conveniently painted with the date they were built.

6. Wander Basel’s old town

As is the case in many destinations, one of the best free things to do in Basel is take a walk around the old town.

The old part of Basel is built on two hills, and wandering the sloping residential streets will make you forget that you’re still in the thick of the third-largest city in Switzerland.

Here, you’ll see the local postman carrying his parcels along the cobbles in an old fashioned cart, and lots of ivy-clad, shuttered-window houses that could easily have been pulled from a fairytale.

Basel old town

Perhaps the most picturesque street in Basel is lined with curious little shops, including one where it’s Christmas all year round. Rumour has it that even the Pope gets his decorations here!

Explore Basel’s historic Old Town with a guide, and gain insight into the city’s history and heritage on a walking tour of the area .

7. Have a romantic date night in Basel at the movies

For three weeks in August, Allianz Cinema take over the area outside the Cathedral (Münsterplatz) and show films. There are food and drink stalls (buvettes), so this is the perfect way to spend a balmy evening in Basel.

Outdoor cinema in Basel

This has got to be among the most romantic things to do in Basel for couples, but it’s equally fun for groups of friends!

8. Get around Basel for free

This compact Swiss city is a doddle to navigate, thanks to an efficient tram service and walkable streets.

There’s no denying that Switzerland is expensive, but the government makes it easy for tourists to see all the top tourist attractions in Basel.

All hotel guests in Basel are given a mobility ticket to use for the duration of their stay, which means you can use public transport at no cost. It’s definitely something to think about when you’re deciding whether to book an airbnb or a hotel!

Tram system in Basel

The mobility ticket also gets you into France and Germany, so you can easily do a bit of border hopping when you visit Basel.

9. Taste local treats

Cheese is an obvious indulgence, but are you wondering what else is good to eat in Basel? It’s a foodie paradise, and it’s not just the cheesemongers that will entice you.

A food tour of Basel’s best-loved eateries will introduce you to the local gastronomy. This one is self-guided , so it’s super flexible with timing and includes a drink and snack at each stop.

You can’t go to Switzerland and  not  eat the locally made chocolate, and one of the most mouth-watering chocolate shops is Läderach , where you can drool (not physically, that’s gross) over slabs of chocolate with every flavour under the sun.

Chocolate shop in Basel

You can also satisfy your sweet tooth with some Basler Läckerli, a locally-made hard spiced biscuit that tastes a little bit Christmassy. It’s made from hazelnuts, honey, almonds and candied peel.  The best in the city can be found at Confisserie Bachmann .

Best leckerli in Basel

10. Swim in the Rhine

One of the things you absolutely have to do in Basel in summer is swim in the Rhine. Join the locals in their daily commute and strip off on the riverbank, throw your belongings into a waterproof bag and use the bag as a flotation device to float down the Rhine!

This is especially relaxing at sunset, and it’s a surreal experience unique to Basel. I was surprised to find that the water is really clean – my skin didn’t even feel icky after my swim!

Swimming in the Rhine in Basel

If you don’t fancy getting wet, you can soak up the sun on the pebbly ‘beach’ or take a seat at the recently renovated public terrace overlooking the Rhine, which is near the Cathedral.

11. Discover Basel’s hipster area

Walk along the riverbanks and you might just hear the beat of bongo drums in the air. I was surprised to find that the hipster scene is alive and kicking in Basel, and nowhere is this more true than at Landestelle , an open-air restaurant at Klybeckquai.

This urban hangout space feels like the perfect mix of industrial and cosy, and the various pop-up bars and restaurants are a magical place to go at night. Definitely a cool place to visit in Basel!

If you go on foot, you’ll feel like you’re on a road to nowhere as you walk along disused train tracks on the river bank past the old harbour area, but trust me – keep going and you’ll stumble upon something quite special.

Off the beaten path in Basel

The food is also excellent, with smörgåsbords of antipasti and succulent meats served all night long, best washed down with a few Swiss Swizz Ciders.

Alternatively, the freshest craft beer in town, Volta Bräu, is brewed in this industrial space inside Basel’s former electrical substation at Voltaplatz.

13. Take a photography tour

For the best shots of a new destination, a little local guidance doesn’t go amiss. This locally guided photography tour helps you find new angles of the top sights in Basel, as well as some off-the-beaten-path gems you might not otherwise discover.

How to get to Basel

Basel has it’s own airport: BSL Airport is called EuroAirport and depending on which side you exit, you’ll find yourself in either French or Swiss territory. I may have took an accidental trip to France when I sauntered out of the wrong door!

The airport is 4km from the city centre and has good transport links. It’s a 20 minute bus ride on the number 50 to get into town.

I got the tram from Basel’s airport into the city. Line no.2 takes you to the exhibition center in downtown and on to the BadischerBahnhof, which is the German railway station.

If you’re arriving at night, a private transfer to your hotel might be more straightforward. You can also book group transfers . Don’t forget to let the company know which side of the airport you’re travelling to or from: Swiss or French!

If you’re visiting Basel from Zurich, take a look at this full-day tour which includes a boat trip .

In northwest Switzerland close to the border of France and Germany, is the wonderful town of Basel; with its incredible old town, mass of museums and location close to some of the world’s most beautiful mountains, you can’t go wrong over 1, 2 or 3 days in Basel. Our Basel itinerary will show you how to reach the city, as well as how to move around from hotspot to hotspot.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Basel?

As Switzerland is a rather small country, you might think there are fewer things to see and do than other countries in Europe, but despite its size, Switzerland offers a great deal for all kinds of visitors – not just skiers!

As a lesser-known city compared to its neighbours Bern and Geneva , it’s natural to wonder how many days to spend in Basel, so let us fill you in.

Basel is perfect for a weekend break or a day trip from western France, eastern Germany or other Swiss towns, with plenty of museums, parks and the wonderful Rhine River to enjoy.

In 1 day in Basel, you can enjoy the charming small streets of the old town, surrounded by glorious historical buildings, but if you can spend 2 days or a weekend in Basel, you’ll also get the chance to relax in the parks or around the river or, if you’re visiting in December, head to the city’s iconic Christmas market.

For a bank holiday weekend or 3 days in Basel, you can either take a leisurely break around the city and visit more museums or spend more time eating Cervelat (Swiss sausage) and people-watching.

City of Basel

Getting To & Around Basel

If you want to arrive in Basel by plane, the city’s nearest airport, EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, is actually in France. However, as France and Switzerland are both part of the Schengen area, you can cross the border with no difficulty.

If you rent a car from the airport, you should be aware that you have to pay road tax upon entering Switzerland.

You can fly to the airport directly from a few European destinations, however, there are cheaper and more eco-friendly routes by train from Frankfurt to Basel SBB; when you factor in airport security and passport control, the journeys take roughly the same length of time. You can view train schedules here.

Basel Airport is just a 15-minute drive from the centre, or 18 minutes via bus line 50, which is scheduled every ten minutes. You can find bureaux de change in the airport and outside the bus station to change your currency to Swiss Francs if needed.

You can also arrive very easily from most French cities, including Dijon , Strasbourg and Paris by bus. When you arrive, there is an excellent bus and tram system covering the whole city, so although you can walk for most of our Basel itinerary if you want to speed it up or save your legs, then take the trams for an enjoyable and quick journey across the city.

The great thing about Basel transport is that it’s all free with the BaselCard ! When you book a hotel or apartment in Basel, you get a free transport card which you can use across the city’s bus and tram system, as well as having half-price access to the museums, zoo, sightseeing bus and guided tours of the old town.

Switzerland has a few official languages, with Italian and French being spoken in some areas, however, the main language used in Basel is German, with its own Basel dialect.

If you’re a German speaker, you’ll get by swimmingly, but even if you just speak English, people are friendly and helpful, and unsurprisingly, polylingual.

Town Hall in Basel

1, 2 or 3-Day Basel Itinerary

Day 1 – old town.

The old town of Basel is full of wonderful hidden gems, with small squares and fountains appearing around every corner and some of the historic city’s most iconic buildings. If you want to explore with a guide, there are a number of walking tours such as this 2-hour tour or this walking tour.

Our itinerary begins in the most logical place to start a tour, the incredible fortified Gate of Spalen, otherwise known as the Spalentor.

Previously part of a large fortification to protect the city in the 14th century, now only the Sankt-Johanns-Tor in the North, the Spalentor in the old town centre and the Sankt-Alban-Tor in the East of the city remain, with the Spalentor being by far the most impressive structure.

With its pointed, angular tower at 40 metres high and two round towers on either side, stretching up 20 metres, this mediaeval gate is one of the most amazing landmarks in Basel and hard to miss as you spend 1 day in Basel wandering around the old city streets.

Having welcomed arrivals from Alsace for almost half a century, this great gate welcomes you into the city of Basel to explore and enjoy a taste of the local culture. You can visit the tower 24 hours a day for free, as well as the university’s 16th-century botanical garden just next door from 10 am to 5 pm.

Basler Rathaus (Town Hall)

Walking for 10 minutes towards the Rhine, or taking a bus or tram to Marktplatz, you arrive in the old town square. This large square is surrounded by wonderful colourful architecture, the most prominent of which being the Basel town hall.

This large red sandstone building and tower from the 16th century is very striking as you enter the square, and as you approach you can see the colourful tiled roof, similar to those found in Beaune, France, as well as the ornate and intricate designs painted on the façade by Hans Bock in the 1900s.

Previously the seat of the parliament of Basel before the city joined the Swiss Confederation, the building now shows the coat of arms of each of the 12 Confederate members on its outer walls and invites visitors into the courtyard to see the beautifully painted walls and archways.

The town hall is open for visitors for free from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

Back in the Marktplatz, you can find a wonderful fresh produce market on weekdays as well as fantastic street food, including the simple and unforgettable Cervelat sausage served with bread and mustard. In Autumn, you can also find Mässmogge, a delicious hazelnut praline-filled sweet treat. If you want to learn more about the Basel food scene, you can take a self-guided food tour.

Basler Munster (Cathedral)

Another 10-minute walk parallel to the Rhine will bring you to another iconic red Basel building – Basel Cathedral. With construction work going on from the 11th to the 16th century, the design spans a few architectural styles, with the classic simplicity of its overall structure demonstrating a Romantic design, and the ornate spires and stained-glass windows showing its Gothic influences.

Within the cathedral, which you can enter for free from 10 am to 5 pm from Monday to Friday (hours differ slightly at weekends), you can discover the crypt and cloisters, as well as the tomb of famous Dutch theologian, Erasmus, who sought refuge in the Swiss city before his death there in 1536. You can find some of his works in Basel University.

Just behind the cathedral, and one of its favoured attractions, is the Basler Pfalz, a large terraced viewing platform on the edge of the Rhine with fantastic views over the northern part of the city and its two famous bridges, the Mittlere Brücke and the Wettsteinbrücke. Seeing this view is definitely one of the best things to do in Basel.

Basel Cathedral

Spielzeug Welten Museum (Toy Worlds Museum)

You may have never expected to read the phrase “the world’s largest collection of teddy bears”, least of all in a Basel itinerary, however, Basel’s Toy Worlds Museum houses just that.

Over four floors in a grand building just 5 minutes away from Basel Cathedral, is Basel’s Toy Museum, which has a collection of over 6,000 childhood toys, from teddy bears and dolls to miniature figurines and carousels. If you’re looking for that childhood teddy you haven’t seen in years or want to see what kind of toys your great-grandparents played with, this is definitely the place for you.

On the ground floor, the museum also has an excellent restaurant serving local dishes, Ristorante La Sosta. Although it has the same opening hours as the museum, you don’t have to pay to enter the restaurant or visit the museum as well.

Kunstmuseum (Fine Arts Museum)

Walking briefly towards the Wettsteinbrücke, you’ll come across an intriguing building belonging to the Kunstmuseum.

The Basel Fine Arts Museum has an enormous collection spread over two buildings, the main and new (Hauptbau & Neubau), which sit opposite each other on the corner of Dufourstrasse.

With works from such revered artists as Rembrandt, Rubens, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Andy Warhol and Roy Liechtenstein, as well as ever-changing temporary collections, this is one of the most enviable museums in Europe.

The Kunstmuseum is the perfect place for a last stopover before you head off to find a delicious fondue to tuck into.

Day 2 – Galleries and Gardens

Spend your second day exploring a different part of the city, from the Modern Art Museum, through the wonderful Merian Garden, to another artistic centre.

Kunsthaus Baselland

Either starting from the Birsköpfli (where the Rhine meets the Birs) and walking for 30 minutes along the delightful Birs River to the Kunsthaus Baselland, or taking a tram or bus to St. Jakob, the city’s football ground, your second day begins at the city’s Modern Art Museum.

Having started in the 1940s, the Modern Art Museum has only been housed in its current location since 1997 but has made a big impression on the city and the international artistic community.

In a converted factory, the museum houses many temporary exhibitions and encourages artists to develop large-scale works specifically for the space, which leaves visitors in awe of the modern art surrounding them.

While the exhibitions are the main attraction, the museum does have a modest collection of paintings by local artists which you can also see.

Schänzli Graffiti Gallery

Taking a very short walk from the Modern Art Museum and being careful to use a designated crossing to navigate the busy road and tramway, you’ll come across some pretty winding paths under the road and rail bridges, where you’ll come across an unofficial urban art gallery.

A popular meeting spot for football fans and artists alike, there are usually many people passing through this area, some of whom stop to create their own works of art, many of the FC Basel related. Since so many people use these big canvases, the graffiti changes quickly, giving the area an entirely new appearance every few weeks.

It’s a great area to wander through on your way over the river and around the sports fields to the Merian Gardens.

Merian Gärten

Open from 8 am until sunset every day and with free entry (although sadly no dogs allowed) the Merian Gardens are a must-see stop over 2 days in Basel.

This great park covering 18 hectares brings more colour to the city every month as the groundskeepers carefully plant and care for all kinds of flowers, shrubs and trees to ensure a beautiful bloom all year long.

The Merian Gardens are a wonderful place to wander through at any time of year to discover the natural beauty and smell the sweet floral scents – what’s more, the beautiful Iris restaurant in the grounds serves scrumptious teas, coffees and cakes to replenish your energy before you discover the neighbouring Park im Grünen.

The Park im Grünen, or Green Park, covers 13 hectares below the Merian Gärten and sports fields, and while you may think you’ve had enough of walking through beautiful gardens and around bodies of water, it contains a few large and curious sculptures that you don’t want to miss.

As well as the red squirrels, fish and beavers you can see around the park’s lakes, you can also discover the park’s most famous sculpture, a huge diplodocus.

Once you’ve wandered around, you can enjoy a game of minigolf or a ride on the carousel, or, if you’re in Basel from the end of June to the beginning of July, you can look forward to a big music festival taking place in the park for around 90 Swiss Francs per day.

Performers have included Sinead O’Connor, Joe Bonamassa and Deep Purple, to name a few.

Laurenz-Stiftung Schaulager

If you’re yet to quench your thirst for art, you might want to head over the road from the park to the Laurenz-Stiftung Schaulager. This converted warehouse hosts many temporary exhibitions of contemporary works alongside its two permanent pieces.

Or, if you’re ready to start a culinary adventure, take a tram back into the old town, to Musik Akademie or Schifflände, and find a cosy local restaurant for the evening. Try a speciality Cordon Bleu in Gifthüttli, or sample the curious and diverse menus of Löwenzorn or Schnabel.

If you’re in Basel for the carnival in February, try the local flour soup Mehlsuppe – it’s similar to French Onion Soup but less rich.

Old Town of Basel

Day 3 – Basel Day Trips

Basel still has plenty of highlights in the centre, from the Anatomy Museum to the Tinguely Museum, however, for 3 days in Basel, it’s nice to mix it up a bit and take a break from walking the city streets.

Dreiländereck

If you’ve got time during your trip to Basel, you should definitely take a trip out to the Dreiländereck, although we haven’t included it because it’s not very close to the city centre. This is a point in the Rhine, the northernmost part of Basel, marked by a large monument, where the borders of France, Switzerland and Germany all meet.

You can reach it from the centre by taking a tram to Weil am Rhein Grenze, but the best way to arrive by far is by boat along the Rhine.

Rhine Boat Trips

On Fridays and Sundays from April to October, you can take a 50-minute round-trip along the Rhine to the tri-border meeting point and enjoy views of France to one side and Switzerland to the other.

Or, you can go in the opposite direction to take in the wonderful old town buildings overhanging the Rhine, as well as Basel Cathedral and the various other landmarks you can spot along the riverside. With your BaselCard, you can enjoy these trips offered by Basler Personenschifffahrt with a 50% discount!

You can also take evening river cruises and enjoy an aperitif before a magnificent dinner onboard.

Amphitheater Augusta Raurica

Just outside Basel, 15 minutes driving or 12 minutes on the S1 train to Kaiseraugst followed by a 10-minute walk, you can find one of Switzerland’s most outstanding Roman remains.

This huge Roman amphitheatre built around 170 CE may seem delightful now, but was once a place of death, hosting gladiatorial battles, animal fights and executions in front of a 13,000-strong audience.

You can enter the amphitheatre for free and enjoy a picnic there before learning more about the place in the nearby museum and Roman house. A couple of hours is ideal to discover the whole site, before spending the final afternoon in Basel taking a ferry on the Rhine from Kaiseraugst back to Basel.

Some of the must-try food include Chapellbridge-Röschti or Swiss hash browns, raclette, Zopf, or plaited loaf and älplermaggronen, the Swiss version of mac ‘n cheese and of course, the world-famous Swiss chocolates .

Zürich

The city of Zurich may be known as an upmarket destination, but it is more than just a global hub for banking and finance.

One of the easiest day trips from Basel, it is located by the northern end of Lake Zurich and is definitely not all high rise buildings and upscale shopping districts.

Walk along the pretty streets of the  Altstadt (Old Town), and you’ll come across structures that showcase its long history.

Zurich is also a city that deeply values the arts, so it’s a must to visit the Kunsthaus Zürich Museum of Fine Arts, the Rietberg Museum, or Chagall’s stained glass windows of Fraumünster Church.

Meanwhile, art and history merge on the other side of the Bahnhofstrasse, formerly known as Fröschengraben. This part leads towards the lake and is lined with beautiful turn of the century buildings.

8. Zermatt and Matterhorn

Matterhorn

The Zermatt and Matterhorn area offers a unique day tour from Basel. The train ride is under three hours, so it’s best to set out early to make the most of your visit.

Located in southern Switzerland’s Valais canton,  Zermatt is known as a year-round destination for those into climbing, hiking, and skiing. It is also situated at the foot of the iconic, Matterhorn peak.

There is an alpine village in Zermatt that is a must-see because you’ll get to learn more about the area including the history of climbing the Matterhorn.

From here, there’s a cogwheel train  to Mount Gornergrat, which is regarded as the go-to place if you want to enjoy spectacular views of Matterhorn.

Best Day trips from Basel, Switzerland

Once you have landed in Basel and discovered the old town of Basel , Kunstmuseum, Tinguely Museum along with other charming places and museums (Basel is the city of museums in Switzerland), it is time to do awesome day trips from Basel. No matter if you’re traveling alone or with a family, there is something for every taste. Keep reading as I’m going to share my favorite day trips from Basel, how to get there, and what to do in these beautiful places.

Basel is an awesome hub for exploring Switzerland. Once you’re in Basel, everything is well-connected. For example, you can reach Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux, or St. Moritz in less than 3 hours.

One very important note as well, Basel sits on the border with France and Germany, so it’s a great getaway city for visiting beautiful places in neighboring countries. I would like to offer: Strasbourg (amazingly beautiful old town), Schwarzwald (the Black Forest with many charming villages and mountains), Parc naturel régional des Ballons des Vosges (French mountains with villages) – these places are really worth visiting as well.

Anyway, here’s the list of places you shouldn’t miss once you’re in Basel.

Table of Contents

Solothurn (1 hour, 70 kilometers)

Solothurn, Switzerland

Solothurn is a very nice small city just 70 kilometers away from Basel which is as well capital of Solothurn canton .

The city lies in a flat part of Switzerland, but some nice peaks are not that far from the city, it is surrounded as well by beautiful nature all around. Solothurn has a very charming old town and the walk by the river is really beautiful.

I have visited Solothurn myself quite a few times and I really like the calm pace of the city and having a slow cup of coffee there is one of my favorite things to do.

Things to do in Solothurn

For me personally that would be an old town tour. They have a very nice charming historical old town with museums, gates, churches, towers, and many other Swiss architectural details. I would suggest to park close to Baseltor  (gates of Basel) and just jump into the old town, stroll around, maybe get into a museum or two, visit churches and have a cup of coffee outside in the old town OR by the river.

I have as well written an article on the best things to do in Solothurn: What to do in Solothurn .

Naturpark Thal (1 hour, 43 kilometers)

Nature Park Thal, Switzerland

Nature park Thal is the closest one to Basel which has some nice hills, villages, farms, castles, and hikes. If the mountain is just 1000 meters it is considered a small hill in Switzerland:) So Nature Park Thal is full of these. It is very close to Basel, so that is why it makes it into 7 Day trips from Basel.

If you are lucky, you can as well see some wildlife such as beavers, reindeer, many birds, and many other animals.

Things to do in Naturpark Thal

Without a doubt, it is hiking. There are many very well maintained hiking paths that lead through beautiful meadows, small villages, and hills.

I would suggest to hike up to or around Vogelberg  – it is one of the highest peaks in Thal Nature Park. There you will find amazing views of all surrounding nature, hills, and if you are lucky – to the Swiss Alps. As well there is a nice restaurant to get some delicious Swiss food. Do not forget the Swiss fondue.

Naturpark Gantrisch (1h 30 minutes, 120 kilometers)

Gantrisch Nature Park, Switzerland

Gantrisch nature park is one of my favorite places to hike and snowshoe in Switzerland. It is a stunning location for nature lovers with mountains over 2000 meters. It is very well maintained and loved places with hiking trails, lakes, huts, restaurants, cows, goats, and hotels. I personally love that place.

Although it is pretty close to the capital city of Bern, in Gantrisch you can feel pretty isolated and can find some nature spots where no one is around. I did hiking, snowshoeing, swimming, running – all things I love. As well there are some small places to ski, do off-road snowboarding and even paragliding.

Things to do in Naturpark Gantrisch

Hiking to Gantrisch peak . It is a peak standing at 2,175 meters and gives you fantastic views to hundreds of other peaks far away.

The hike itself is short, up to 2 hours to the top, but gets quite steep in some places so you must pace yourself. On the way to it, I met hundreds of friendly goats and cows, it is full of live nature there. If you decide to do this hike, start from Untere Gantrischhütte,  park there and go up 🙂 You are really going to love nature and the hiking trail as well. Do not forget to have plenty of water as summers are very hot up there.

Jura Mountains (1h 20 minutes, 106 kilometers)

Jura Mountains, Switzerland

If you think that Switzerland is lucky to have the Alps, you will think that Switzerland is even luckier now as it has the second mountain range called the Jura mountains. Yes, in this small mid-Europe country they have not one, but two mountain ranges. How amazing is that?

Jura mountains are not as big as the Alps, but still, there are many places to check out and you can definitely get great views. In Jura mountains mostly spoken language is French.

Things to do in the Jura mountains

I have once written an article about the best things in Jura: Best things to do in Jura mountains . But I think the best one is to visit the Chasseral.  It is one of the highest peaks in the Jura mountains with a huge (I would say even iconic) radio tower on the top. You can get very close by car to the top or you can hike there if you wish.

When I was in Chasseral, there were dozens of Swiss cows on the way there, so if you see them, do not be afraid. Swiss cows are quite often on official hiking trails and paths.

The views are amazing and as it is on the edge of the Jura mountains, you can see far far away in the flat part of Switzerland. If you are hungry: no worries, there is a big restaurant on the top.

Bern (1 hour, 110 kilometers)

Bern, Switzerland

Quite many people mistake Zürich to be the capital of Switzerland as it is the biggest city in Switzerland, but No, the capital is beautiful and charming Bern. It is always a very cool experience to visit the capital city and put it into your list of visited places.

Things to do in Bern

Bern is full of museums (great museums), restaurants, parks, and other places, but in my opinion the best thing there is simply to stroll through the old town. I know that I am maybe biased, but I really adore and appreciate old towns. And if it is a beautiful one, why not spend time there?

In the old town, you will find dozens of churches, old architecture, parliament, Swiss national bank, squares, and many other attractions. If you are in Bern in summer, go to the main square as there is a very nice fountain which jumps from underneath the ground.

Zytglogge is a must in Bern. It is a very famous city watch in the middle of the old town and you are going to love the tour of it: Zytglogge tour .

You should definitely enjoy a walking tour of Bern old town where you are going to learn a lot about the history of Swiss capital: Bern walking tour .

As well, in the old town, you can find a very nice viewpoint where you can see all those beautiful old roofs. Do you want to get the best possible pictures of Bern and surprise your followers and friends? Then jump into the Bern Instagram tour .

And if you have more time, you can stroll through Bern with a private guide: Bern city tour .

One other thing you can do: swim in the river. It is very popular in Switzerland to swim in the rivers.

If you’re lacking the ideas for awesome activities in Bern, check out my article that will give you the needed inspiration.

Lucerne (1 hour, 97 kilometers)

Lucerne, Switzerland

If one would have to choose the most beautiful city in Switzerland, Lucerne will definitely make it into the top 3 on anyone’s list. It is in a pretty fascinating location: lake and mountains in one place. Can anyone ask for anything better? Lucerne is one of the best day trips from Basel.

The architecture of Lucerne is as well very uplifting and exciting, so everyone will love the old town of Lucerne as well.

Lucerne is full of boat tours to other villages and mountains, full of expensive watch shops, full of amazing ice cream, full of swans in a crystal clear lake, and many other things.

Things to do in Lucerne

One place you must go to Lucerne is the old Harry Potter world looking bridges. In summer they are full of people and you can even get into the traffic jams made of tourists, but you will love it. These bridges are really really old and charming at the same time.

You should visit both bridges and while doing so you will do a very nice tour of the old town as well.

Visit Mount Pilatus – it is one of the most beautiful peaks in Switzerland with wide views with hotels and restaurants on the top. You are not going to regret a trip up there. Check the best tours here: Mount Pilatus tour.

Lake Lucerne is on of the most beautiful lakes in Europe and it is crystal clear, great to swim and as well enjoy a cruise tour. Why not? Jump onto the cruise and enjoy dinner with your friends or family – Lucerne cruise tour .

And you may find many other activities and tours from paragliding to historical tours right here: Lucerne guided tours .

Lauterbrunnen (2 hours, 163 kilometers)

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

If Lucerne is one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland, Lauterbrunnen definitely makes it into the most charming village’s list. Top 3. For sure. That is why Lauterbrunnen makes it into top 7 day trips from Basel.

If you have ever seen the iconic view on Instagram of beautiful old Swiss buildings, mountains all around and the waterfall pouring water down in a gracious line – that is probably Lauterbrunnen.

All the surroundings of Lauterbrunnen and the village itself are one big fairy tale place. It would be hard for anyone to not fall in love with this place.

It has it all: dozens of hiking trails, skiing, old Swiss architecture, Swiss food, cows, meadows, valleys, amazing neighborhood of other charming villages, and so on.

Things to do in Lauterbrunnen

That is a hard one, but recently I skied in the Jungfrau region and used a train just for a little bit over 6 CHF which takes you up the mountain from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen . In my opinion, it is one of the best train rides in Switzerland which has a great price/experience ratio, because all other spectacular train rides in Switzerland are pricey.

So just for 6 CHF, you get to see all the valley of Lauterbrunnen, the waterfall, the mountains, and in the end, you get to charming Wengen. From there I highly recommend hiking back to Lauterbrunnen , so you will have a great nature experience as well.

Lauterbrunnen is very close to the most amazing mountain top in Switzerland – Jungfraujoch. It is a mountain base at 3463 meters altitude with shops, restaurants and many other activities. Once you are in Lauterbrunnen, jump onto the train and visit this place where winter is all year long: Jungfraujoch trip . I have done it myself few years ago and it is still the best place I have eaten fondue in my life.

Want to jump into the James Bond world? Visit one of the places James Bond visited in Switzerland: Schilthorn. It is an iconic mountain peak in Switzerland with great history: Schilthorn tour from Basel .

Do you love hiking? Why not to try the best hiking paths in Lauterbrunnen – hiking in Lauterbrunnen . Lauterbrunnen is one of most favorite places of mine to hike.

5 Winter Day Trips from Basel, Switzerland

5 Winter Day Trips from Basel, Switzerland

But everything else – the nature, the beautiful cities, the food (aka cheese)…We loved ( and ate ) it all.

Tiled rooftops in Basel, Switzerland in February

We booked a private room in Basel on AirBnb (which is pretty much the cheapest place in Switzerland that we could find for accommodation) and hit it off with our hosts. They showered us in chocolate and beer our first night there, and even invited us to go dancing with them!

They asked what we had planned, and I proudly announced our chosen destinations. Our hosts looked at each other, shook their heads, and were like nahhh we have MUCH BETTER IDEAS FOR YOU.

So, here are the best places to go in Switzerland in winter according to 2 Swiss locals !

BASEL MAKES FOR A GOOD BASE

The Spalentor (Gate of Spalen) is one of the three city gates that still remains from the original Basel city wall in Basel, Switzerland

Apparently all the AirBnbs/hotels offer this perk which is pretty cool. And no, that doesn’t mean you get a free train to the alps, but it means that all the trams/buses you take within Basel are all free! And this includes to and from the Basel airport , which is pretty lit if you ask me – usually getting to and from the airport is ridiculously expensive.

Buildings along the Rhine River that runs through Basel, Switzerland

But to be honest, wandering was really nice.

All the following day trips take place from the Basel SBB railway station, the central station in Basel.

THE BEST WINTER DAY TRIPS FROM BASEL, SWITZERLAND

Colmar, france is the prettiest little french town.

Colmar, France in the Alsace region is full of cobblestone streets and colorful half-timbered buildings and houses

I would suggest you bypass the annoying machine and just purchase your tickets inside the Basel train station from people that can help you in the information section . Don’t even bother with the machines. That’s what we did on our second attempt and it was so much easier.

The canals of Colmar along the La Lauch are beautiful next to the colorful, half-timbered buildings and houses

But, once we made it to Colmar we forgot all of our train station woes. It was stunning!

It’s usually a very touristy place, but it wasn’t that crowded since we went on a weekday in February . That is my advice to you if you want to avoid all the people.

Colmar is an easy day trip from Basel, Switzerland

LUCERNE IS MORE THAN JUST A BRAND OF DAIRY PRODUCTS

Lake Lucerne in February

You can also get up earlier so you can enjoy more time in Lucerne before taking the ferry to Rigi (I believe ferries leave every hour or 2). Or you can just come back to Lucerne on your own because it’s so freaking pretty??? Especially dusted in snow??

Lake houses in February are covered in snow on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland

RIGI IS THE COOLEST MOUNTAIN

The view from the top of Rigi in Switzerland is full of clouds and mountain peaks

I’d highly recommend this or Pilatus (the other mountain similar to Rigi, although I believe Pilatus is a little higher), as it’s really really cool to be above the clouds!

Especially during a cloudy winter – great way to get some sunshine. Although remember to bring your sunglasses and sunscreen , PLEASE – and a hat if you’re feeling crazy. The sun is really strong up there, especially since it’s reflecting off the snow.

Clouds surround the top of Rigi in Switzerland

Oh and try and tell me that seeing toddlers in snowsuits isn’t the CUTEST THING EVER. Ok actually, toddlers in snowsuits riding in old wooden sleds was the cutest thing ever. One kid was totally passed out in the sled with his limbs just flopping around, which was absolutely adorable.

LAUTERBRUNNEN HAS SOME EPIC VIEWS

Lauterbrunnen is a pretty Swiss Alps ski town to visit in winter in Switzerland

MÜRREN IS THE PERFECT SWISS ALPS SKI TOWN

Mürren is a quintessential Swiss Alps ski town, and is full of large mountains and ski chalets - worth a visit in February!

You have to switch trains at Interlaken (so you still get to see it if it’s really on your list), then take a cable car/gondola thing up the mountain, then another train. But it’s soooo freaking beautiful and worth it, I promise! Even if you’re a non-skier, it’s fun to just walk around! OR they have ski lessons and sleds you can rent.

Ski chalets in Mürren, Switzerland, a classic ski town in the Swiss Alps, covered in snow in February

And we opted not to go to many big cities simply because we’re not city people, and really wanted to see nature! But if you’re a city person, by all means check out Zurich and Bern! You can also check out the southern parts of Switzerland like Geneva or Lugano. We just didn’t feel like riding on a train ALL DAY to get there and then head back.

HOW TO GET AROUND

We mostly took trains to explore Switzerland! In Basel, you can use the trams and buses (for free!) and we just used Google Maps to plan everything out. We used the SBB website (the Swiss train site) to look up tickets, but you can also use their app which is a little more handy.

Having AirBnb hosts was also really great as they helped us out with purchasing our tickets, too! And again – Google Maps is your BFF.

Keep in mind that Swiss train tickets can be pretty pricey, so book early if you can!

Basel is a great base for exploring Switzerland, and it's old town is especially pretty in the winter!

Oooh so I like the look of the buildings in Basel, but wooooow for the views at Rigi and the others areas up in the mountains. Wowza!

p.s. I think you might need some microspikes to strap over your shoes/allow you to walk on snow and ice! 😉

Yeah the views at Rigi were unlike any other! I’ve never been above the clouds like that before (besides being on a plane lol.)

And haha, yes I definitely should invest in some microspikes! They look handy. And then I wouldn’t have to worry about suffering any potential broken bones…

I actually visited Colmar this summer. It’s indeed a pretty amazing place. I only had a long weekend and so I did Colmar and Strasbourg, but I am kicking myself for not booking a day in Basel. It looks pretty awesome and I am totally in love with that type of architecture.

September 5, 2019 at 8:32 pm

Very happy to come across your blog as I am considering relocating to Basel from near Zurich. I laughed out loud at the “Lucerne is more than a dairy brand” comment. I literally had the same first thought when I went there! Not many cows though haha.

I’m glad you enjoyed it, Jacqueline! I was hoping people would find that comment funny, so nice to know it’s worked 🙂 Best of luck relocating. I genuinely loved Basel – it’s such a pretty city.

Nowhere does the saying "the journey is the destination" ring truer than in Switzerland .

With valleys deep and mountains high, get ready for rides of a lifetime – from hairpin-bend road trips to trains chugging high into the snowy wilds of the Alps and and heavenly boat journeys across piercing blue lakes. Travel in Switzerland isn’t only beautiful – it’s also environmentally sound. The eco-minded Swiss have nailed rail travel like no other nation, and climate-neutral boats, solar-powered cable cars, electric buses and car-free towns and resorts further boost its sustainable credentials. Thanks to plentiful charging stations, the entire country is drivable by electric car.

Journeys in Switzerland aren’t just about getting from A to B – they are travel moments you’ll be raving about for years to come. Here's how to get around this tremendously scenic country.

Be wowed by the Swiss scenery when traveling by train

You’ve got to hand it to the Swiss – their trains really are the dream: efficient, slickly modern, eco-friendly and with views that keep you glued to the window for the duration of the journey.

Most major cities, including Bern , Geneva , Zurich and Basel , are connected by rail with daily services. Tickets do not need to be bought in advance, and they can be purchased at stations on the day of travel or on the official Swiss Railways website . That said, look out for sizable discounts when booking “supersaver” tickets ahead of travel.

Ride the panoramic trains for the best views

Primarily geared towards tourists, these panoramic trains often have cars with extra large (and remarkably well polished) windows that emphasize the incredible scenery and let you get some great photos. They all require reservations, with tickets usually sold for a specific leg on the routes rather than the full journey.

  • Glacier Express : The "wow" never leaves your lips on this legendary Alpine train journey between Zermatt and St Moritz. The Brig–Zermatt Alpine leg makes for pretty powerful viewing, as does the area between Disentis/Mustér and Brig.
  • GoldenPass Line : Skirting the shores of some of Switzerland’s most ravishing lakes, this route links Lucerne to Montreux . The journey is in three legs, and you must change trains twice. Regular trains, without panoramic windows, work the whole route hourly.
  • Bernina Express : This route negotiates 55 tunnels and 196 bridges as it travels the Alpine valley of Engadine one way from Chur to Tirano in four hours, hitting its high point at 2253m (7392ft) above sea level. Between May and October, you can continue from Tirano to Lugano by bus.
  • Mont Blanc/St Bernard Expresses : Go from Martigny to Chamonix, France, or over the sensationally wild St Bernard Pass.
  • Voralpen Express : Glide between Lake Constance and Lake Lucerne, through St Gallen, Rapperswil and Romanshorn on this route.
  • Gotthard Panorama Express : This rail-boat combo starts with a wonderful 2.5-hour cruise across Lake Lucerne to Flüelen, from where a train winds its way through ravines and past mountains to Bellinzona or Lugano.

Tip for saving francs on scenic train journeys: Regularly scheduled services, which often ply the same routes as the tourist trains, can be just as enjoyable and significantly less expensive.

Mini driving on snow lined road in Switzerland

Driving in Switzerland is a breeze

Skirting lakes and vineyards and twisting up and over passes in the high Alps, Switzerland’s roads are beautiful on a cinematic scale, and the country has plenty of drives that are too darned scenic to rush.

The headline road trip is the 1600km (994-mile) Grand Tour of Switzerland , an epic, efficiently signposted lap of the country that links 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and shows off the Alpine nation from its most flattering angles. And the environmental clincher? It’s entirely drivable by electric car.

You’ll find car rental companies at airports and in cities and towns. Many now rent out electric cars, too. The minimum rental age is usually 25 but falls to 20 at some local firms. You always need a credit card. In winter, rental cars are usually equipped with winter tires.

Switzerland’s roads are well signposted and maintained, but you should always check conditions before heading up into the Alps, especially in winter. The highest passes are only open from June to October and, depending on the weather, you may need to use a tunnel instead.

Tip for driving on freeways in Switzerland: You’ll need to pay an annual one-time charge of Sfr40 to use Swiss freeways and semi-freeways, identified by green signs. This is available as an E-vignette online or as a Vignette (sticker) at the border, at Swiss gas stations, post offices and at Swiss tourist offices abroad. The sticker must be displayed on the windshield.

Buses serve remote mountain regions

If you are in no hurry, Switzerland’s bright yellow postal buses can be a fun way to reach the remote mountain regions. The country’s PostBus service is synchronized with train arrivals, and bus stops are handily located right next to railway stations.

Prices are comparable to train fares. Swiss national travel passes are valid, but a few tourist-oriented Alpine routes levy a surcharge. Tickets are purchased from the driver, though on some scenic routes over the Alps (for instance the Lugano to St Moritz run) reservations are necessary.

A cable car dangles high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland

Take a mountain railway, cable car or funicular ride

What a way to commute! The cable cars, funiculars, cogwheel railways and gondolas that climb up to the country’s highest Alpine reaches  are an absolute joy to experience and a highlight of traveling in Switzerland (as long as you have a head for heights!).

True marvels of engineering, the mountain gondolas graze treetops, rail-bound funiculars shimmy precariously close to rock faces, and cable cars wobble across valleys (don’t worry – they are safe and subject to regular checks), before all emerge at a spectacularly snowy summit or glacier. It’s worth checking out what money-saving passes are available locally because they often work out cheaper than individual tickets and costs can quickly mount up in a country with so much vertical.

Tip for taking cable cars: A word of warning: always check what time the last cable car goes down the mountain unless you fancy a very long trek down. In mountain resorts in winter, it's as early as 4pm when the light starts to fade.

Boat travel is a slow but wonderful way to cross Switzerland's lakes

Switzerland is a landlocked country, but boats ply the country's large lakes, serviced by steamers operated by Swiss Federal Railways or private companies for which national travel passes are valid.

Passenger boats run on Lake Geneva , Constance, Lucerne , Lugano , Neuchâtel , Biel, Murten, Thun, Brienz and Zug. Traveling by boat is a slow and delightfully scenic way to get around.

Tip for seeing Switzerland from the water: Check out SwitzerlandMobility for a detailed overview of regional and national canoe routes on lakes and rivers - from Bodensee (Lake Constance) in the country’s north to Italian-flavoured Ticino in the south.

Consider investing in a Swiss Travel Pass

Though travel in Switzerland is efficient and convenient, it can also be expensive, and visitors planning to use intercity routes should consider investing in a Swiss Travel Pass . With this transport pass, you're allowed unlimited travel by train (including premium panorama trains), bus and boat, as well as local public transportation in cities, free entry to 500 museums and discounts of up to 50% on mountain excursions.

Tip for families: Children under 16 travel free of charge with the complimentary Swiss Family Card when accompanied by at least one parent (holding a Swiss Travel System ticket).

Mountain bikers stop for a break at a picturesque lookout over the Swiss Alps, in the Portes du Soleil region.

Experience Switzerland up close by bicycle

Whether you’re looking to crawl up hills on a road bike, tear down trails on a mountain bike or simply want a gentle pedal through orchards and vineyards hugging the shores of a shimmering lake, Switzerland is brilliantly set up for cyclists. Many cities have free or inexpensive bike-rental schemes , and bicycle and e-bike rental is usually available at train stations.

There are many well-signed and highly scenic cycle routes heading along rivers and lakeshores in Switzerland, perfect for two-wheel adventures. For details on national, regional and local routes, rental (including e-bike rental), bike-friendly accommodations, guides and maps, check SwitzerlandMobility .

Tip for traveling by train with a bike: Bikes can be taken on slower trains, and sometimes even on InterCity (IC) or EuroCity (EC) trains, when there’s room in the luggage carriage. Advance booking is sometimes necessary.

Accessible transportation is good in Switzerland

Switzerland ranks among the world’s most easily navigable countries for travelers with physical disabilities. Most train stations have a mobile lift for boarding trains, and city buses are equipped with ramps. The majority of modern hotels also have wheelchair access (although budget accommodations tend not to have elevators).

Switzerland Tourism has excellent information on barrier-free travel , including details on airport arrangements, assisted rail travel and disabled parking, or get in touch with Procap , an authority on barrier-free travel in Switzerland. The SBB has helpful pages on accessible travel , including details on tickets, booking assistance and journey planning.
