Marathon County tourism brought in a record-breaking $490M in 2023. Here's why that matters.

WAUSAU – Marathon County residents welcomed more tourists in 2023 than ever before.

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism published economic impact data from the 2023 tourism season Tuesday that showed tourism in Marathon County generated a record-breaking $490 million, surpassing the previous record of $460 million set in 2022.

The department estimates tourism brought $25 billion in economic impact to the state of Wisconsin. This number also surpasses a record set in 2022 of $23.7 billion. The model the state uses to calculate economic impact considers direct spending by visitors, indirect spending by businesses for supplies and induced spending, or the spending done by tourism and business industry employees on goods and services in their daily lives.

“Wisconsin tourism powers the economy and strengthens the fabric of communities of all sizes,” Anne Sayers, secretary of tourism in Wisconsin, said in a news release. “The historic impact of tourism reached every corner of Wisconsin and, in doing so, sustained livelihoods for thousands of our friends and neighbors.”

Counties statewide experienced growth in economic impact with Monroe County seeing the largest increase of 11.2% and both Buffalo and Vernon tying for least at 0.2%, according to Department of Tourism data. Marathon County’s 6.4% increase was one of the higher increases among the state’s 72 counties.

“We are excited to celebrate another record-breaking year in Marathon County. It’s a testament to our communities and partners who roll out the red carpet of hospitality to visitors,” Tim White, executive director of Visit Wausau, said in a news release. “We are committed to developing the ‘quality of place’ in Central Wisconsin, to showcase how awesome it is to visit, live, work, and invest here!”

Tourism in Marathon County supported 3,574 part- and full-time jobs in various industry sectors in 2023, up from 3,480 the year before. There are 178,045 similar jobs in counties across the state, an increase from 174,623 in 2022.

Taxes collected from tourism-related activities in Marathon County increased from $28 million to $29.8 million from 2022 to 2023. The department said tourism generated $1.6 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2023. Without this revenue, Wisconsin households would need to pay $660 more to maintain current level of services, according to Visit Wausau.

The state as a whole welcomed 113 million visits in 2023, nearly two million more visits than 2022. A record 46 million overnight visits also occurred last year. Overnight visitors spend on average almost three times as much as a day-trip visitor, the release said.

“These numbers show what an important role our tourism economy plays in our state’s economic success. And this didn’t happen by chance − this happens because of the hardworking folks in this critical industry who work day in and day out to make sure visitors enjoy their time here and come back year after year,” Gov. Tony Evers said in a news release. “We’ve been proud to help support their good work by making smart, strategic investments over the last several years to support Wisconsin’s tourism industry, and our hard work together is clearly paying off.”

In June 2023, Evers signed 2023 Wisconsin Act 12, which modified how the state redistributes tax dollars to local governments across the state in a process called "shared revenue." One full penny of each dollar from a taxable purchase in the state goes into a separate fund to be returned to local governments as a result of the law change, according to analysis by the League of Wisconsin Municipalities .

Visitors to the Fox Cities spent nearly $575M in 2023, a gain of 2.3% from 2022

G RAND CHUTE, Wis. (WFRV) – Visitors to the Fox Cities spent $571 million in the area during 2023, an increase of 2.3% and a gain of $13 million from 2022.

This spending pushed the total economic impact of tourism in the Fox Cities to $748 million.

Spending directly supported 4,947 jobs in the Fox Cities tourism industry, with an employee income of $147.1 million. State and local tax revenue generated by visitation to the Fox Cities totaled $64 million.

“It’s exciting to see strong growth continue in the Fox Cities tourism economy,” said Pam Seidl, executive director of the Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau (FCCVB). “The growth is a testament to the Fox Cities lodging and hospitality industries and the incredible experiences available to visitors at our attractions and events.”

Visitor spending is tracked across five categories: lodging, food and beverage, retail, recreation and entertainment, and transportation.

Spending increased in four of the five categories: Recreation and entertainment spending grew the most, 4.9% to $86.6 million. Food and beverage spending grew 3.7% to 171.5 million. The remaining spend totaled $120.8 million in retail, $69.6 in transportation, and $122.4 million in lodging. Lodging showed a .1% decline in spending year-over-year.

The state of Wisconsin posted a historic year, with the total economic impact of tourism in the state rising to $25 billion in 2023. Statewide tourism supported more than 178,045 jobs and generated $1.6 billion in state and local tax revenues.

Indiana Republicans upset Mike Braun’s choice for lieutenant governor, backing far-right pick

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Republicans rejected Sen. Mike Braun’s choice for lieutenant governor on Saturday, instead nominating a podcasting pastor with far-right views to be his running mate.

Braun, who is leaving the Senate, endorsed state Rep. Julie McGuire for his running mate when he became the GOP nominee for governor. Indiana delegates usually back the nominee’s chosen running mate without a challenge.

But during Saturday’s state Republican Party convention, party delegates instead chose pastor Micah Beckwith, who promotes uncompromising positions on abortion, gender and sexuality and cohosts his “Jesus, Sex and Politics” podcast. The ultra-conservative Christian pastor lobbied delegates for a year to win the nomination at the convention.

Beckwith received the votes of 891 delegates, while McGuire got 828 votes, Indiana Republican Party spokesperson Griffin Reid said.

Braun had been endorsed by former President Donald Trump and campaigned largely on national issues such as immigration. Trump made a surprise endorsement Thursday night for McGuire ahead of the convention, indicating Beckwith’s campaign had some teeth.

“There’s no doubt about this, I’m in charge, and Micah is going to be someone that works with me. If he doesn’t, I think that means it will probably not be as fruitful,” Braun said after Beckwith’s victory.

Braun, who is leaving the U.S. Senate, had announced McGuire as his choice in May, a day after winning the primary election with about 40% of the votes. Trump won Indiana in the 2020 election by 16 points.

Braun will now run with Beckwith against Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jennifer McCormick, a former state education chief, and Libertarian nominee Donald Rainwater. Democrats haven’t won a statewide office in Indiana since 2012.

The Indiana Republican Party said in a statement that with Beckwith’s nomination as Braun’s running mate and state Attorney General Todd Rokita’s nomination Saturday for a second term in that post, “the statewide Republican ticket is set and ready to win in November!”

Beckwith, who unsuccessfully ran for Congress from central Indiana in 2020, actively campaigned for lieutenant governor for a year, courting delegates months ahead of the convention. He is known for his far-right stances on gender, sexuality and abortion. He cast himself as a political outsider who would keep the governor’s office in check, limit property taxes and oppose school efforts to support the LGBTQ+ community.

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Mike Schmuhl said in a statement that Beckwith’s nomination “shows how out-of-the-mainstream extremism has hijacked the current Indiana GOP.”

“Beckwith will bring the worst of the culture wars to the lieutenant governor’s office, which is usually tasked with increasing tourism and supporting agriculture. He is dangerous for business, dangerous for women, dangerous for families, and dangerous for Indiana’s future,” Schmuhl added.

McGuire, from Indianapolis, was a policy analyst for Senate Republicans until 2022, when she unseated a representative who had angered other Republicans in part by repeatedly pushing a complete ban on abortion. Indiana’s current law allows exceptions in rare and limited circumstances.

Braun said he selected McGuire for her strongly conservative legislative and policy record despite her short time in office. If ultimately elected by voters in November, she would be the latest in a series of women to reach the second-highest office in a state that has never seen a female governor.

Indiana’s lieutenant governor runs four state agencies, ceremoniously presides over the Senate and would break tie votes there, if that would ever happen in a chamber where the GOP enjoys a supermajority.

Delegates sometimes buck their leaders’ choices. In 2022, they defied Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb’s backing of the incumbent secretary of state for a second term and instead elected Diego Morales, who went on to win the general election.

The entertainment giant dropped its federal lawsuit on Thursday, a day after DeSantis appointees green-lighted a plan that officials say will result in up to a $17 billion investment into Walt Disney World over the next 10 to 20 years.

In a court filing, the corporation’s lawyers attributed the move to the approval of the new development agreement by the DeSantis-backed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.

The governor’s office applauded Disney’s decision to withdraw the lawsuit.

“This is another positive step as we turn the page and uphold responsible government and continue making Florida the No. 1 tourist destination for families,” said Bryan Griffin, a spokesman for the governor.

When asked about their decision to end the lawsuit, Disney officials emailed a copy of the court filing but did not comment on the legal move.

Disney sued DeSantis, the tourism oversight district and other state officials in April 2023 and accused them of engaging in a “targeted campaign of government retaliation.”

The dispute stemmed from a 2022 law limiting classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity that critics dubbed “don’t say gay.”

In a statement at the time, Disney pledged to get the law repealed or overturned in the courts, adding it was committed to “standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country.”

DeSantis made Disney a political punching bag as he courted conservative voters in the GOP presidential primary, accusing the company of promoting the “sexualization” of children. He devoted a chapter in his book “The Courage to Be Free” to Disney, detailing how he was tackling the “The Magic Kingdom of Woke Corporatism.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger called the governor’s accusations “preposterous” and said the business was being excoriated for exercising its First Amendment rights.

As the feud escalated, DeSantis and GOP allies in the Florida Legislature seized control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District , which Disney had used for decades to essentially self-govern its Central Florida theme parks and resorts.

Lawmakers renamed Reedy Creek the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, and DeSantis ousted the district’s five Disney loyalist board members and replaced them with Republican allies in February 2023.

The dispute then entered the courts. Disney sued in federal court and asked for the changes to be undone. Discovering binding development deals approved under the outgoing Disney-friendly leadership, the new DeSantis-aligned tourism oversight district filed a state lawsuit and asked for those agreements to be voided.

In Disney’s suit, the corporation’s lawyers blasted DeSantis, writing that the governor and his allies were “employing the machinery of the state in a coordinated campaign to damage Disney’s ability to do business in Florida.”

Disney suffered a setback in January when a federal judge dismissed its suit. Disney appealed that ruling.

Then in March, Disney and the tourism oversight district settled the state lawsuit, paving the way for a new development plan to be brokered. The district board approved that agreement Wednesday night.

The agreement includes Disney’s commitment of an $8 billion investment during the first 10 years and up to $17 billion over 20. In return, the district committed to road and other infrastructure projects to support the growth.

The agreement covers about 17,300 acres owned by Disney, according to a summary of the deal. It authorizes a maximum of five major theme parks, one more than Disney operates in Central Florida now. Disney officials have not announced the specifics of their plans.

It also allows a maximum of five minor theme parks, such as a water park, nearly 1.3 million square feet of office space, 1.7 million square feet of restaurant/retail space and 53,467 hotel rooms.

Other highlights include a $10 million commitment by Disney to fund affordable housing projects, along with a pledge to launch a “buy local initiative” with at least half of construction dollars going to Florida businesses.

Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort, praised the deal, saying it will support growth, fuel Florida’s economy and allow for “more memorable and extraordinary experiences for our guests.”

DeSantis officials struck a conciliatory tone, too.

“This agreement is a big win for central Florida and will lead to numerous jobs and improved guest experiences,” said Griffin, the DeSantis spokesman.
