It's All About the Music on Alejandro Sanz's Tour: 5 Best Moments From the Miami Show

At this stage in his life, nearly 30 years after making history with his hit "Corazón Partío" and following decades of arena touring, Alejandro Sanz could invest pretty much anything on his shows.

He has, and it's all gone into the music. At a time when Latin shows have leaned into special effects, dancers and staging, Sanz put together a musical tour de force with more than 10 musicians, plus back-up singers on stage, all moving freely about in service of the music - including several instrumental interludes that sounded like A-plus jam sessions, traversing from flamenco-tinged pop to funk.

Which is not to say that the production Saturday night (Sept. 23) at Miami's Kaseya Center was anything to scoff at. The video packages were stunning, and the stage risers allowed Sanz to operate from multiple locations.

But his biggest prop was his band, which Sanz used freely to navigate around the stage and set up moments: performing alongside his (upright) bassist, playing his guitar and singing fully acoustic with guest Beatriz Luengo, and perching cross-legged atop a set of stairs for one track, then standing beside the piano for another.

For Sanz's avid fans, it was more than enough. The show, part of his En Vivo Tour presented in the U.S. by Loud and Live, was his highest-grossing ever in Miami, selling more than 12,000 tickets, according to management, for a complete sell-out.

Sanz plays next in Chicago on Sept. 27 and in New York on Sept. 30. Here are five standout moments from the show.

Sanz is an artist with many artist friends, and many were there to either perform with him or cheer him on. "Miami is like our home," said Sanz, and it felt like it. Performing guest artists included locals Camilo (beautifully performing their joint hit "Nasa"); Elena Rose (who guested on "Paraíso Express," originally recorded with Alicia Keys in 2009, and who belted those vocals); Yotuel on "Labana," Sanz's homage to Havana; and last but not least, Yotuel's wife Beatriz Luengo in an all-acoustic rendition of "Viviendo Deprisa." Then there were the plentiful celebrity guests that were not on stage, including El George Harris, Camila Cabello and, up in a suite far from cameras, Sanz's good friend Shakira.

It's so refreshing to see a big band on stage these days. Sanz's was plentiful and included two grand pianos, one in each corner of the stage, drums, percussion, bass, guitars, trumpet and three phenomenal backup singers. All told, over 10 musicians regaled us not only with top accompaniment for Sanz that at times resembled an intoxicating wall of sound, but also with dazzling, virtuoso interludes.

Sanz went '80s and '90s on the crowd with a pink suit, sunglasses and his spiky, white-blonde hairdo. It was classic, and he looked like a boss.

The Repertoire

It's hard to encompass everything Sanz has to offer, but he managed to get through many of the big hits in the first quarter of the show before navigating into lesser-known gems like "Contigo," "one of those songs that I say, ‘Damn, I wish I had written it,'" says Sanz (Joaquín Sabina is one of the co-writers of the song). Of course, there was room for "Corazón Partío" as a grand finale, and, as part of the encores, an all-time favorite, "Y Si Fuera Ella," which doesn't make it to every show, but luckily, it got here.

The Overall Vibe

Sanz's arrangements are complex. His lyrics are complex. Watching 12,000 people sing along demonstrates that simplicity is not the only avenue to success.

Alejandro Sanz

Alejandro Sanz (born 18 December 1968) is a singer-songwriter hailing from Madrid, Spain. He has received countless awards including 15 Latin Grammys, making him the only artist to have done so. His style is primarily rooted in salsa balladry, but has crossed over into salsa, rock, and hip-hop.

Sanz has been playing guitar since he was 7 years old and grew up listening to artists like Yolandita Monge, Julio Iglesias, Jose Feliciano, and Joaquin Sabina. He was also heavily influenced by his father, who was a professional guitar player in addition to being a door to door salesman. While vacationing with his family in Andalusia Sanz was exposed to and inspired by the flamenco guitar playing he heard on the trip. He inevitably picked up the style, but was deterred from pursuing it professionally due to the strict nature of his teachers. The style has undoubtedly influenced Sanz’s signature sound; however, he uses it only to accent the pop construct of his songs rather than as a foundational framework.

Although Sanz started composing music by the age of 10 he did not release his first album “Los Chulos Son Pa’ Cuidarlos” until 9 years later. The album was a fusion of techno and flamenco and little resembles the sound Sanz has since become recognized for. He promoted the album at local strip clubs, but never made much of breakthrough with the release. Dismayed by the album’s lack of success, he went back to school to study business administration. This did not last for long and in no time Sanz was back making albums.

Considering “Los Chulos Son Pa’ Cuidarlos” was released under the name Alejandro Magno, it was not until 1991 that he officially released his studio debut, “Viviendo Deprisa” (this time under the name Sanz). The album proved to be both a critical and commercial success and launched his career as Spain’s biggest pop star. Two similarly themed albums followed: 1993s “Si Tu Me Miras” and 1995s “3”.

Sanz was largely confined to a Spanish market throughout the greater part of the 90s, but made his international breakthrough with the 1997 release “Mas”. The album completely dominated the charts in Spain, going platinum 22 times over; however, it also was incredibly successful in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and even the US, in which it sold over 600,000 copies upon release. With the help of the extremely popular single “Corazon Partio”, this record became the best selling Spanish album of all time.

Sanz also furthered his presence abroad particularly in the UK with his featured appearance in the Corrs music video for “Una Noche”. He also built his fan base in America with his 2001 recording “MTV Unplugged”.

Sanz challenged the expectations of his audience with his 2003 album “No Es Lo Mismo”. This release was a throwback to Sanz’s childhood street days and incorporated elements commonly found in urbanized music such as electronica and hip-hop. The mood was shifted from the plush romanticism of his earlier work towards a colder context. The risk’s Sanz took with this album seemed to pay off as it became another massive success in Spain and even managed to break into the US Billboard 200 (a particularly difficult feat for a Latin artist). The album was also critically herald, winning the Latin Grammy for best Latin Pop Album. Sanz’s next few releases were compilation albums detailing his hits and rarities.

Sanz did not put out his next studio album “El Tren de los Momentos” until 3 years later. In between these albums he released one of his biggest hits to date. “La Tortura” a song he co-wrote and recorded with Latin pop sensation Shakira. This song as well as his album “El Tren de los Momentos”, significantly boosted his status world wide.

Sanz went back to his formative style on his next studio release “Paraiso Express”, which came out in 2009. Alicia Keys made an appearance on the album contributing vocals to the grammy nominated track “Looking for Paradise”. Sanz’s 9th studio album came out in 2012 and marked his first release through Universal Music.

Live reviews

Alejandro Sanz, as well as having a phenomenal name (a born star, surely?), is also a 15 time Latin Grammy winner. Hailing from Madrid, Spain, Sanz is a hugely successful and talented singer/songwriter and musician- a man of many talents indeed. Although I would classify his music style as predominantly salsa, there are also elements of rock and hip hop that keep his music feeling fresh and current. Sanz has a stunning voice and you don’t even need to know Spanish to really appreciate his music. The atmosphere was quintessentially spanish and very romantic- the lights, music and fans predominantly added to this- but there was also a party atmosphere to the show that left everybody dancing and swaying to the music, huge grins on devoted fans faces as they beamed up at the Latin sensation. It was evident from Sanz’s stage presence alone that he is a musical icon and legend, and that he has been in the business for a hell of a long time. He had a natural confidence and elegance on stage that made him a delight to watch live.

Alejandro Sanz is a Spanish singer-songwriter and musician. He has fifteen Latin Grammy Awards and three Grammy Awards to his name. Such amazing accolades to his name no doubt. His discography is infinite with thirty-six singles to his name. The venue has the most amazing Spanish atmosphere you could imagine; there is some fantastic food going around, and beautiful lights being suspended from the ceiling. It is a very hearty and quintessential Spanish atmosphere indeed. He opens with “El alma al Aire” which has a fantastic vibe, with some virtuosic classical guitar being played. “Paraiso Express” is the song four songs in that just gets the party started, with every single person in this venue by this point dancing their socks off. “La Musica No Se Toca” is the amazing mid set peak song that just keeps the party going, maintaining this atmosphere. The energy that Sanz has is just so positively impressive with a lot of Spanish dancing in this room from the front to back.

Lannistaar’s profile image

Triple Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Alejandro Sanz is a Latino star with universal appeal. A discography that now stands at nine albums has been filtered well into a succinct, pacy set showcasing the very best of his upbeat pop/rock sounds.

He has topped the charts in his native Spain an impressive seven times whilst he has also remained atop the US Latin charts twice. As you can imagine his tours are always well attended and the man himself greets the crowds fondly making sure to interact with them throughout the long show. He keeps them dancing along to older music whilst he allows himself time to showcase his ability with the guitar. His live band keep the beats allowing Alejandro the opportunity to really get to know his crowds as they scream in appreciation. As the final tropical tones of 'La música no se toca' end there is no question that Sanz is one of Spain's most internationally acclaimed stars.

Excelente show!!!

Why Michael Olise is a target for Chelsea, Man Utd and Newcastle

LONDON, ENGLAND - MAY 19: Michael Olise of Crystal Palace reacts during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Aston Villa at Selhurst Park on May 19, 2024 in London, England. (Photo by Alex Davidson/Getty Images)

Michael Olise is gifted with game-changing qualities that would benefit any top club.

The Crystal Palace winger, 22, has growing interest from clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United after a fine end to the season under Oliver Glasner.

The France Under-21 international has a release clause in his contract and a growing list of admirers after scoring 10 goals as well as providing six assists last season. As reported in The Athletic ’s Monday’s Transfer DealSheet, Olise will only move if he is certain it is right for him .

It was his performance in the 4-0 victory over Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United last month that cemented Olise’s reputation as one of the most exciting talents in the Premier League.

He scored twice and was a threat that United could not contain throughout. The difference to when he has been in Palace’s team has been stark.

alejandro sanz tour 2022 miami

A hamstring injury restricted him to 19 appearances in 2023-24 but Palace’s win percentage leapt from 26 per cent to 42 when he was in the team.

Olise’s attacking output and ability to break down defences is why he is on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

His nine non-penalty goals came from an expected-goals (xG) figure of only 4.7 and his six assists followed his Premier League record for Palace of 11 in 2022-23.

His numbers match or even surpass wide players who played significantly more games. Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon played 35 times and had 21 goal involvements from 57 chances created — enough to get him into the England reckoning for Euro 2024.

alejandro sanz tour 2022 miami

His statistics easily surpass Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling, who both had lower outputs in 2023-24.

This kind of productivity from the right wing, where many clubs struggle, makes Olise a key target. Teams who are looking to diversify their scoring opportunities across the front line see value in him.

alejandro sanz tour 2022 miami

Olise is left-footed but plays mainly on the right, an area where Manchester United and Newcastle United have been lacking this season.

For Newcastle, Miguel Almiron works hard but lacks the creativity and ambition required, rarely attempting crosses or through balls and providing only three assists across the last two seasons.

Olise’s rate of 5.86 take-ons per 90 minutes in 2023-24 was not dissimilar to Alejandro Garnacho ’s 4.56, but the Argentine prefers to operate on the left. United began last season with Antony as their first-choice right-winger but his 2023-24 total of one goal and one assist in 29 Premier League appearances explains why United are looking for alternatives.

Off the field — as shown in numerous in-house interviews at Palace and after matches with broadcasters — Olise appears reserved.

But on the pitch, he transforms into a different persona: he is confident, creative and able to make things happen. In particular, it is the weight of his crosses that has stood out.

This chart shows Olise’s significant role in Crystal Palace’s attacking sequences.

His collaboration with Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta has been productive and would appeal to his suitors with the likes of Nicolas Jackson at Chelsea and Rasmus Hojlund at Manchester United often starved of service. Or if Newcastle were to make their move — fitting into a frontline with Gordon and Alexander Isak would be a daunting prospect for opposition defenders.

His ability to integrate and contribute to existing attacking dynamics would also be beneficial for these clubs.

Under Patrick Vieira, Roy Hodgson and now Glasner, Olise has been free to roam centrally. He averages 3.53 final-third ball carries per 90, which is in the top three per cent of Premier League players. He often finds space within small areas and is particularly adept at using defenders as screens to bend shots on goal — as Cole Palmer has done to great effect in his first season at Stamford Bridge.

Olise thrives with the support of an overlapping full-back. This season, Nathaniel Clyne and Daniel Munoz, who made such an impact at Palace having signed from Genk in January, filled that role. Their movement creates space for Olise’s one-v-one situations and crosses.

Chelsea and Newcastle United have suitable full-backs for this approach, including Malo Gusto, Reece James, and Tino Livramento. Although Manchester United’s full-backs aren’t a perfect fit, Diogo Dalot can make underlapping runs. All would work well with Olise’s ability to pass centrally.

Olise is in France’s preliminary Olympics squad, a fitting stage for him to show the world just what he can do. But the big question is: will any of his suitors have convinced him to change clubs by then?
