Flip-flops may seem like a random item to add to this safari packing list. But it’s nice to air out your toes if you’ve had them in sneakers all day. Flip-flops are also great safari shoes as they’re convenient to wear in camp showers. And don’t forget about the beach!

Not a big fan of flip-flops? Try one of these slip-on beach sandals as your second pair of safari shoes instead. Throw in a pair of cute ankle boots or stylish slip ons if you’re traveling in Cape Town .

But make sure not to add too many shoes to your safari wardrobe!

Whether you need to pair your socks with safari boots or sneakers, make sure they are moisture wicking socks ! This is particularly important so you can keep your sock numbers down.

I know we’ve mentioned merino wool a lot, but just as with the rest of our suggested safari clothing, merino wool socks are perfect to pair with your safari shoes because you can rewear them multiple times without having to wash them.

Several TFG readers agreed that Kirkland’s merino wool socks are a great pick to add to your safari wardrobe. One reader says, “I wash them in cold water and hang them to air dry, but they have held up really well and keep my feet warm, too.”

If you’re camping, you can bring a pair of Kirkland socks (like the ones shown above) to keep your feet warm at night. If you choose dark colors or prints they won’t show the dust as easily.

Last but not least for your safari travel checklist, make sure to pack a good sports bra for the bumpy journey! Vehicles in Kenya, and other countries, often cover all terrains including deeply rutted roads and huge potholes.

Make your ride more tolerable by wearing a sports bra whenever you are being transported. Also, take some motion sickness meds beforehand if you are prone to car sickness.

Also, quick dry travel underwear helps you easily do laundry without having to wait ages for it to dry!

Because you may be moving locations every night, you won’t have much time to wash your safari clothing, so it’s best if you bring fast drying fabrics or clothing you can re-wear easily.

Safari Travel Tip: Most of the time, you’ll be popping a squat on the side of the road, so a female urinary device or even a flowy skirt might be helpful if you’re not crazy about the idea of flashing your goods. Don’t forget your antibacterial hand wipes!

To go along with your safari clothing choices, you’ll need a few accessories.

Hats are great because they can help shield you from the sun and hide unwashed hair. But while hats are a definite must, but that doesn’t mean they have to be unattractive.

When it comes to your hair, you will want to keep it covered and pulled back in a ponytail or bun so it doesn’t get tangled in the wind and full of dirt from the road. We have a few suggestions for some hair accessories that will help keep high maintenance hair on the down low during your safari tour.

Sunglasses are also a must-have, they offer shade and protection from the sun which is really important considering how close to the equator you’re going to be! A few other safari necessary accessories include a bathing suit and scarf.

Don’t be a target for unwanted attention. When you choose what to wear on safari, make sure you don’t dress too flashy or showy. Make sure you don’t bring any of your expensive jewelry and leave your designer handbags at home (or another safe place).

Which luggage should I choose for safari?

When it comes to choosing luggage for safari, check out the Osprey Fairview 55L . It’s kind of perfection.

I found it easier to lug a soft bag than a suitcase, as everyone’s gear gets piled up under the truck. I personally use it with the Compass Rose packing cubes to stay organized and fit in everything!

Don’t worry so much about the baggage weight. My bag never goes over 30 lbs using the guidelines suggested on the site. If you aim to pack light, you shouldn’t be overpacking!

What should I pack for toiletries on safari?

When it comes to what you need to pack for toiletries on safari, there are a few things you’re definitely going to need.

You definitely will want to have a female urinary device , because the only bathroom breaks you get are in the bush. Finding adequate coverage can be a challenge, so you might also need to get comfortable with flashing your bum at other women on the trip!

You’ll want to bring a travel towel so that it can dry quickly when you’re constantly on the go. You should also pack any prescriptions you might need along with mosquito repellent … don’t forget that! And while it’s not exactly a toiletry, you’ll want a collapsible water bottle , too!

If you’re going to go the carry-on only route, make sure you cut back on your toiletries. It’ll help with TSA if you put all of your liquids in a Ziploc bag, following the 3-1-1 rule !

The Dos and Don’ts of Safari Clothing Packing

Packing for your African safari can seem overwhelming, so let’s finish off by going over our main dos and don’ts when it comes to getting together your safari gear and planning your safari attire!

What should you not wear on safari?

What you shouldn’t wear for an African safari depends highly on the actual trip type that you’re participating in. An overland trip that touches on a variety of countries is going to mean different must-haves from a short safari to Kruger Park that’s smack in the middle of a longer trip.

If your African safari trip is long, you’re going to want to focus on making comfortable, practical safari clothing a priority. But if you’re headed on a short three-day trip, you can definitely get by with wearing regular clothes.

But for both trips, we highly recommend that you DO NOT wear a romper on a safari — three days, seven days or otherwise. We know that we’ve mentioned this before, but it’s such an important note that we want to talk about it in a little more detail!

When you’re on an overland safari trip, it’s common place to simply pull over on the side of the road to go to the bathroom — in public — as there really aren’t bathrooms along the way. The reason why we stress that you shouldn’t wear rompers is due to the fact that going to bathroom in a romper means taking all of your clothes off to go to the bathroom.

While you might be able to find a somewhat “discreet” spot in the pushes to pop a squat, you’ll still be pulling off your entire romper in public and it’s much harder to attempt to conceal the top and bottom half of your body at the same time. It’s much easier to focus on covering your backside.

We know you’ll thank us for this advice later!

What colors should you wear on safari?

As exciting as it is to experience nature in its rawest form, you don’t have to immerse yourself to the extent that your safari clothing completely blends in with the foliage and desert itself. We can leave that for the Hollywood movies!

With that in mind, the best colors for safari clothes include:

• Olive green

A tip for picking the best color for your safari clothing is to go with colors that are inspired by nature. Measure your clothes with the image above, if they’re in the same tone, intensity and relatively the same color they’re good to go. You’re looking to blend in, but you don’t have to look like Crocodile Dundee or wear full tactical gear!

What color should you not wear on safari?

If you’ve done your safari clothing due diligence, chances are you’ve come across something that tells you not to wear bright colors. It seems like a strange request, but it’s recommended that you choose neutral colors because you don’t want the animals to see you — if they do they might be scared off!

Stick to neutral colors but avoid white because your safari clothes are bound to get very dirty, especially if you’re camping, and white will show it all!

Can you wear black on safari?

Wearing black on safari is not recommended. Black clothing attracts mosquitoes, and you’ll want to avoid that as much as possible to keep your trip its most enjoyable!

If you do end up bringing some black pieces, keep them to a minimum and opt for lightweight fabrics wherever possible!

On August 2, 2022, Just got back from South Africa; Cape Town, Cape Winelands, then off to safari at Kruger; Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe; Botswana, Okavango Delta! It was a great 12-women trip, Women, Wine and Wild. I researched and looked at this site for everything from suitcases, carry-ons, cross-body bags, packing, lists of clothes, shoes, jackets, underpinnings, toiletries, hats, scarves, etc.; for varying types of travel, city, winelands, safaris, and Travel Fashion Girl came through on all fronts – I was ordering things left and right even in the last few days and got it all together and had the most wonderful trip. I may have taken a little too much, but I really used most everything I brought so it all worked out. But as they say, less is more; I wouldn’t bother even with a little heel for dinners out if it’s only a few night in a city. I wouldn’t take as many pants as those can be interchangeable pretty easily, especially if you bring a few blouses/tops. For chilly mornings or evenings, a lightweight puffer jacket was perfect. And scarves are perfect to help mix it all up and really be able to wear the same things with different scarves. TFG is an amazing place to go for everything travel; I love it!

Just got back from our 3 week honeymoon on safari in Kenya and Tanzania including a week in Zanzibar – these packing lists from TFG were so helpful for knowing what to expect and helping to minimize how much luggage to bring. Definitely recommend carry on backpack for this trip to fit in the small trunks of the land cruisers and for small airplanes (we took one with only 12 seats!)

Someone recommended we take soft travel bags to fit onto the small airplanes which I would NOT do again. Due to their weight, it made the grueling trek through airports a painful experience 😣 Instead, we would have preferred rolling, carry-on luggage. My two-cents, but unless you travel lightly, soft bags aren’t the way to go for this type of trip. Anyone else?

Loved this packing list! I only went on a two day safari but this was immensely helpful with helping me choose the right clothes to pack for a conference plus my safari outing.

We’re just back from a Safari in Zimbabwe , Botswana and Zambia And I found previous posts on Safari clothing on this site invaluable! And def no all in ones ! We stopped for loo breaks whenever needed and took it in turns to go round to the back of the truck so it was totally private and discreet! I took very thin summer dresses for the middle of the days and was really glad of these . And we definitely needed warm things for early morning … I had a cashmere snood I was so thankful for … I could pull it up over the back of my head . Also silk gloves ! And it was the best holiday we have ever had !

Just came back from a trip that included: Capetown; The Winelands; Vic Falls; Chobie game drive in Botswana; self drive through Kruger; and a luxury resort/safari game drive; — oh yeah and we had a two day stop over in Doha (!) So we had temps that ranged from 50-65 degrees in Capetown/Winelands; 55-85 in Kruger, and 98-112 degrees in Doha (!)

So one big thing to consider is that the weather is vastly different depending where you go: Capetown in July is Winter, which is chilly and drizzly, can be windy and stormy, BUT because it’s their winter, it was the best time to go on Safari on the other side of South Africa, which was Great Kruger National Park, so just remember, your season might not be their season. Best safari pants I brought was North Face Hybrid Yoga/cargo pants in olive — stretchy, quick dry, had tons of pockets, but felt like leggings. Also the lululemon “Smooth Departure” packable rain coat. Ultra light, and looks good while on safari or in the city. Lastly, even if you go during a “light bug” season, I would recommend at least one Insect Shield SPF long sleeve top (that can be also rolled up) and at least two pairs of their socks. Long sleeve shirts that have SPF can keep you cooler than a t-shirt because the African sun is HOT!! And even if you come from a sunny state (Like CA, as I do) your arms can get really get burnt. Also, a first layer underlayer (for cold) can do double duty. I wore it over my bathing suit while I was going into Devil’s Pool (Victoria Falls), and it really saved me because the water was COLD!! Because it was dry-wicking, it dried almost immediately. Also, just a note: our safari guides would NOT have recommended wearing that bright turquoise jacket that’s pictured in the photo (especially on a walking safari) — maybe it was more “neutral” looking in real life?

YES it gets COLD, even in summer! Keep in mind that some local flights out into the bush have a weight limit on luggage so double check on this- they’re strict! Also, some safari’s do laundry daily so that helps cut down on what you need. I survived a 2 week trip with 2 pairs of leggings, 1 hiking pant from Athleta (cute!), 1 pr of shorts, 5 shirts, (mix of button ups, tanks and athletic type t’s) a fleece and a windbreaker. Don’t overdo the shoes either! One pair of sneaker types and one pair of sandals is fine!

Great article! Having lived in Africa for the past nine years, I might also advise against wearing shorts. Most of Africa is significantly more conservative than many Western countries, and the only people I ever see in shorts are the tourists and, at times, wearing anything cut above the knee can attract unwanted attention from males- an unfortunate but true reality

Hi Alex, Emily’s comment about shorts also might include strappy tank tops and leggings. Your comment about wearing sports bras was right on. Safari trucks have lousy shocks and you will be bounced around. A scarf is useful for keeping dust out of you eyes and mouth.

We are going to Cape Town for 4 days then winery for 4 days, safari for 5 then victoria falls. Will it look silly if I wear kaftans for dinners? And what about days for shopping and touring in towns? I can’t imagine having only a carry on and not a variety of clothing.

If you’d normally wear kaftans to dinners at home then you should wear them while you’re traveling too 🙂

No blue clothing, as it (like black) attracts mosquitos. Bring decent underwear, something you won’t be embarrassed for camp staff to wash by hand, as I found one fellow doing. You’ll wear the long-sleeve shirt in the jeep during the afternoon so you don’t get sunburned. Unless you’ll hike, closed-toe sandals are good for everything. I wore clogs for the plane and around camp. Glad I brought a fleece jacket for cold mornings. I brought older clothing and left it. In Tanzania, I left sneakers with a camp staffer who was extremely grateful, even though they were one size too big for him. To my safari driver went my bathing suit and robe (someone will wear them), fleece jacket, and old Tevas. I suggest a headlamp, which you may need (tents and hotels were short on light).

I would add one trash bag to the packing list. In the morning game drive on our last day of the safari, it rained cats and dogs on us, and we got soaked (we all had rain ponchos on but they didn’t help much). Thankfully, someone had trash bags to spare, so we could put the wet clothes in the bag and put in the luggage without everything else getting damp.

Just got back from an Africa safari, and here is my recommendations: 1.) Take Sunscreen! I burned one half of my face sitting in the safari vehicle one day…so I switched sides to burn evenly the next. 2.) A hat would help combat problem #1. 3.) Don’t waste space on hair dryers or makeup etc. No one in the bush cares. 🙂 Bring soap, shampoo, toothpaste and call it done. 4.) I only brought hiking tennis shoes. I longed for a pair of flip flops on the long days in a car. 5.) It can get quite chilly at night. Bring long pants for sleeping if you are staying in a tented camp. I was on my honeymoon so pajama’s wasn’t a top priority when packing…wish it had been! Lol! 6.) Bring a clean outfit for the plane ride home and put it aside. Coming out of the bush after a week of bucket showers you feel dirty enough. 7.) Last and most important: Don’t pack anything that resembles food in a tented camp. I had a granola bar in my bag and we had a honey badger break into our tent while we were gone. It ate the granola bar, chewed up all my underwear, and then took a big poop in my husbands suit case!

At least one knee length skirt or dress is a must if you are going to be exploring outside of the parks at all. A sarong also goes a long way and I have a nice knit hat I alway bring along in the winter. Also, the first time I traveled to Tanzania I made the mistake of thinking I would only need camping gear and spent the whole time wishing I had a cute top with me. I highly recommend bringing an outfit you can wear to dinner or a club. Overall, great tips! Thanks!

I am not sure if you have already gone trekking or not, but I might consider changing your black skirt to tan, beige, grey or even light pink. I spent two years in and out of Dubai and Afghanistan….you will constantly be trying to clean your black skirt, the sand is more like a talcum powder and sticks to everything, also the dark colours are hot! You will definitely want something feminine/girlie though and the scarves are an excellent idea! Have a wonderful time! 🙂

As always, love, love, love the lists! In all parts of Africa, it’s best to always err on the side of modesty and cameo prints should always be avoided. On safari, it would be worth spending the extra money for clothing that is sunscreen rated/treated with bug repellent.

Some travelers like to have a more dressed-up option for cocktail hour and dinner back at camp—think flowy, breezy dresses, flats that can withstand a little dust, and a warm scarf to wrap yourself up in. Jumpsuits are a great option since it eliminates having to pack both tops and bottoms for evenings. In terms of accessories, leave any really blingy jewelry at home and opt for a more simple, pared down look.

Dark clothes for safari like black and blue attract heat, biting tsetse flies, and other insects, so these colors are better not to wear on safari. Also, avoid bright colors and neon colors that may startle or attract animals; especially when you go on a walking safari . Although white colors often look nice and stylish on the safari photos across the web, I wouldn't recommend wearing white clothes on safari drives as the  roads can be extremely dusty, especially if you're allowed to go off-road in for example the conservancies around the Maasai Mara .

• DON'T wear on safari: bright colors, pale and neon hues, black and blue colors, busy patterns and military camouflage clothing (in African countries, camouflage attire is only worn by the rangers and military).

2. Wear Layers on Safari for Protection from the Cold

Layer Up! On safari in Africa, weather in certain seasons can change quickly and temperatures can vary significantly, especially during early morning and late afternoon game drives . In the mornings, it can be cold and windy, while in the afternoon it can still be very hot. Sometimes, Mother Nature may surprise you with a heavy rain shower; all part of your Africa safari adventure. That's why it's a good idea to wear layers when you go on a game drive or a walking safari. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing accordingly and stay comfortable in changing weather conditions.

Now, what does wearing layers mean? In the morning, when you start your game drive before sunrise, it can be chilly. So start by wearing for example a lightweight khaki short-sleeve shirt, then a beige long-sleeved blouse, and an olive-green warm fleece jacket to keep you warm in the mornings and on exciting night drives to spot nocturnal animals. When it gets hotter during the day, you can take some layers off. Simple as that. For rainy days, it's handy to have a rainproof jacket, for example a soft shell or poncho that you can easily put in your daypack.

3. Wear Breathable Fabrics on Safari

Safari destinations often have warm climates, so prioritize lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to stay cool and comfortable throughout the day.

You can wear lightweight pants, shorts or long outdoor pants that can change into shorts (zip-offs). Choose long-sleeve neutral colored blouses made of light fabric. Opt for outdoor clothing with built-in UV protection or safari clothing with  insect-repellent  for added defense and to minimize pesky insect bites.

Also, don't forget to bring a hat and a scarf. A wide-brimmed safari hat and safari sunglasses protect your face from the sun, and a scarf keeps you warm when it's chilly or it can protect you from rain or dust. If you choose lightweight clothes, you can travel with a lighter bag. This is especially important when you travel around with charter flights , as most small planes used for moving between safari destinations have rules about how heavy your bags can be (often max. 10kg). Many African lodges offer laundry services, so you don't need to pack too much.

One clever trick is to bring safari clothing for hot weather and safari clothing for cold weather that can be mixed and matched and used as layers. Earth tones, like khaki and green, are not only great for blending in with the surroundings, but they also make it easier to put together your safari outfit.

Moreover, leave valuable jewelry at home. Minimal jewelry is the way to go. It does not only enhance your comfort but also ensures your safety. Instead, by some colorful beadwork from the ladies that make beautifully handmade jewelry, like bracelets.

6. Wear Comfortable Footwear on Safari

Make sure to bring along a comfortable pair of shoes to complete your safari outfit. Opt for sturdy, closed-toe shoes, boots, or vellies with good traction. You'll likely be walking on uneven terrain, so prioritize comfort and support to avoid discomfort and potential injuries.

The type of closed shoes you need depends on the type of safari and activities on your safari trip. For example, if you go on walking safaris, or if your safari involves gorilla trekking through muddy forests or hiking dusty terrain, it’s advisable to bring high-quality safari boots or hiking shoes with good grip worn with hiking socks and impenetrable soles, which can be useful to protect you from sharp objects like snares or thorns and from reptiles like snakes.

Some even wear gaiters for better protection from snake bites or ants. Depending on the terrain, I wear short olive-colored gaiters when encountering wildlife on foot in East Africa. For Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda , I wear higher gaiters as you trek through dense vegetation than can be thorny and slippery with biting ants along the way.

If you're mainly going on a game drive in a vehicle, basic stable shoes, like lightweight trail shoes, are fine. If you're in an area with lots of bity insects and reptiles, it's wise to consider higher-rise hiking boots for added protection on safari. I prefer closed shoes on walks because of the insects and thorns but I'm also someone who loves to wear slippers on game drives. If you decide to wear sandals or slippers, please make sure to apply sunscreen on your feet.

One of my preferred safari shoes choices is the authentic South African Veldskoen boot. These shoes are handcrafted, comfortable, durable, and have a stylish touch. Many local field guides in Africa wear these boots too.

7. Respect Cultural Sensitivities

Respect local customs and traditions by dressing modestly , particularly if you'll be visiting communities or cultural sites during your safari. In (rural) communities, revealing clothing, such as short shorts or low-cut tops, can be considered disrespectful or offensive. If your safari includes visits to local communities , opting for clothing that covers your shoulders, arms, and knees is advisable.

If you have the opportunity to participate in local festivals or ceremonies, wearing clothing that aligns with the traditional attire of the community can be a sign of respect and can enhance your cultural experience.

8. Check the Camp or Lodge Dress Code

Most safari lodges and camps have a casual safari-style dress code . In that case, formal (evening) wear is not necessary to pack. If you prefer, you can change your safari outfit for formal evening wear, but in reality, most people go straight to dinner after arriving from the evening game drive.

On my first African safari , I used to go back to my room to take a shower and change my safari clothes . But I quickly learned that most people prefer to stay by the fire after the game drive while sipping on a glass of wine or cold beer as an after sundowner . From gazing into the fire and talking about your sightings with other guests, you go straight to dinner. Most safari days don't end extremely late as you have early morning game drives.

Some lodges or camps may have specific dress codes for certain activities or dining areas, so it is advisable to check the clothing guidelines of your lodge or camp in advance.

What to Wear on Safari • Ultimate Safari Outfit Packing List

You’ve booked your dream trip; an African safari. And now, the slight panic sets in because… what do you wear on safari? What should be on your African safari packing list? You’ve seen in documentaries people in head to toe tan, with dirt-covered boots and mosquito nets, but is actually what the ideal African safari outfit looks like? I’m going to help you put together multiple safari outfit ideas so that you are dressed in a safe, functional, and maybe even cute way for this safari trip! So settle in and let’s look at some Africa safari outfits.

I specifically went to Tanzania for my 7-day safari, but these rules for a recommended safari outfit are pretty applicable to almost any safari in Africa (aside from gorilla trekking).

However I promise I would never recommend something to you that I didn’t personally love. So these items are all vetted through yours truly and are 100% perfect for a safari outfit.

Colors Matter in African Safari Outfits

The first time I typed “what to wear on Safari” in Google was because I wanted to know what colors and patterns I could get away with on my first safari. Turns out, not many! You see mostly earth tones from guides and naturalists because that’s what you need to wear to not stick out to the wildlife so it’s important that what you wear on an African safari meets the muted tones of your destination.

Here are some no-go African safari outfit colors:

• Don’t wear black or dark blue because these colors attract tsetse flies
• Don’t wear white, it doesn’t blend with any terrain
• Avoid loud colors and patterns for the same reason as white
• Avoid camouflage, this is reserved for military only

What colors are good to wear on an African safari?

• Light earth tones; tans, browns, forest greens, and colors in that same vein
• Either solid print or very minimal patterns aregoing to be ideal for your safari outfit

Dress in Light Fabrics and Layers on African Safari

The mornings and evenings on an African safari can be cool with warmer to hot afternoons, so you’ll definitely want to pack safari outfits that can be layered. It’s easiest to layer light fabrics, and you’ll definitely want things that are breathable so you don’t overheat. A safari outfit made of sweat-tastic fabrics is no good so this “what to wear on African safari” guide is going to be FULL of breathable, cooling fabrics.

What fabrics to wear on an African safari?

• Anything lightweight and breathable

You’re going to be traveling between lodges or camps almost every day on your African safari, and you’re not going to want to be packing up a ton of clothes every time. So no matter what you wear for your African safari, I HIGHLY recommend you pack 2 or 3 outfits that you can mix and match items between.

I also packed using my Peak Design backpack and the Away Bigger Carry-On luggage, and these were easy to move with every day.

Keep Your Safari Outfits Simple

I know we’re all sort of convinced from movies we need to wear these extravagant African safari outfits, but I promise simple is better here. Form and function over fashion for sure, but I promise you can still look nice. You’re going to be getting in and out of vehicles, standing up and down all day every day for however many days you’re on African safari so what you wear on safari should be comfortable first and foremost. BUT the best thing about some of my outfit recommendations below is that they’re still cute!

Wear Long Sleeves and Pants

This might not seem an obvious suggestion for what to wear on safari, but you’ll appreciate it nonetheless. You’re going to want to protect yourself from the sun, the dirt/dust, and the elements, so I highly recommend wearing pants and for one of the layers of your safari outfit to be a long sleeve shirt of some sort. Not every layer needs to be long sleeves, but at least one.

Comfortable Shoes

If you’re not doing any sort of hiking or trekking on safari, your shoes won’t really matter as much. Our safari consisted of game drives for the most part, so I really just recommend something comfortable and neutral in color. This can be hiking boots or a sneaker; whichever would work.

But you will want something that isn’t going to get ruined by a little mud. Depending on what time of year you go on safari you may be walking in a little bit of mud at your hotel/camp site, lunch spot, or any other stops you make along the way.

Shoes I’d Recommend:

• Blundstone boots (but make sure they’re broken in by the time you go)
• My all-time favorite hiking boots – Timberland Chocorua Trail Boot
• Baabuk Sky Wooler in Oatmeal – these are the sneakers I wore
• Salomon hiking boots – these are my husband’s favorite shoes

Bring a Raincoat

Again, because of the weather I highly recommend a raincoat for your safari outfit. Because not only is it a light jacket that acts as a great outer layer should you need it, it’s also great in case you’re going on safari during the shoulder or rainier seasons. So definitely add a raincoat to your African safari packing list.

What to Wear on an African Safari: A Practical Expert Guide

Before going on my first African safari, I had a lot of questions. What do I wear ? What do I bring ? I turned to the internet, which did not give me all of the answers I was looking for. If you feel like this, you have come to the right place. Keep reading to find out what you should really wear on an African safari, based on my real-life experience.

In this article, I reviewed a few outfits that I wore on safari at the Makalali Prive Game Reserve in South Africa, and I provided feedback on each. This way, you will know what worked, what didn’t, and why. I also wrote out my general conclusions based on my experience, so you can make informed decisions when planning your attire.

Safari Outfit #1 Review

The details:

• Casual t-shirt
• Lightweight pants
• Hiking boots

My thoughts:

Overall, this outfit was a great choice. The safari hat was a must for sun protection during the day (although it is not pictured in every photo, I wore it on every drive). It also prevented my hair from blowing around uncontrollably in the wind. Alternatively, you may choose to wear a Shemagh scarf, which my husband raved about.

In my opinion, a short-sleeve t-shirt is the way to go when on safari. It kept me cool during the day’s heat, was comfortable and durable, and was easily covered by a jacket or sweatshirt when the sun went down. The only downside was that it did not provide protection against mosquitos all day long (I guess that is what mosquito spray is for, though). A solution would be to wear a long-sleeved lightweight t-shirt, as you may see my husband wearing in a photo featured later on in this article.

I also think the lightweight pants were a good choice. They kept me as cool as possible while still protecting me from mosquitos. The bottoms of the pants were tight, so they could easily be tucked into my hiking boots for extra protection.

Last but certainly not least, the hiking boots provided the support and comfort I needed for a long day of safariing. You will be in the wilderness, which is filled with dirt, rocks, bugs, and animal feces. Don’t risk ruining your sandals; you can thank me later.

Safari Outfit #2 Review

• Utility jumpsuit

Although this outfit seems like your stereotypical safari wear, it was the least practical of the bunch. Game drives can last hours, meaning you may be forced to “mark your territory” behind a bush (if you know what I mean). This jumpsuit did not make it easy. I had to unbutton the whole thing, which took a while, and then do my business entirely naked in the great outdoors. Even if you are going to a reserve or national park with established rest stops and bathrooms, such as Kruger National Park, I would still advise against this outfit; taking it off and putting it back on is time-consuming. I often held up the group because of it!

Some positives were that this was a jumpsuit, meaning it covered my legs and protected them from mosquito bites. My arms were exposed, but this helped with the heat, and I could easily throw on a sweatshirt when I got cold. It also looked super cute in photos!

Once again, the hiking boots were a great, practical choice.

Safari Outfit #3 Review

• Convertible cargo pants

I feel the same about this t-shirt as I did about the one featured in outfit #1: cool and comfortable (with, unfortunately, no protection from mosquitos). However, the pants were the highlight of this outfit. Although not the most stylish, convertible cargo pants will be your best friend on safari. The temperature can fluctuate a lot (and very quickly), so you’ll need an adaptable outfit. When I got hot, I converted the pants into shorts; when I got cold, I zipped the pant legs right back on. They are also durable and comfortable. You can’t go wrong with convertible cargo pants!

Again, hiking boots are always a good idea.

Safari Outfit #4 Review

• Cropped leggings

I wore this outfit because all of my other outfits were dirty. The t-shirt was fine, as I previously mentioned, but I regret having worn cropped leggings with it. My ankles were not protected, which the bugs seemed to enjoy. It also made me rather cold during the morning, as my exposed ankles made my body rather chilly, no matter how many sweatshirts I put on.

I wore sneakers by accident. I meant to put on my hiking boots, but it had slipped my mind. Honestly, sneakers worked just as well. They did not provide the support I had come to expect during my safaris, but they did the job, and I would not necessarily advise against them.

My Conclusions

Based on my personal experience, I believe a safari hat, casual t-shirt, light jacket, lightweight pants (or convertible cargo pants), and hiking boots are the best things to wear on an African safari. Skip on the stylish safari outfits, as they can complicate your day and leave you uncomfortable; it is not a fashion show!

P.S. Do not worry about the color of your clothes. According to my guide, who goes on safari for a living, the animals can only see in black and white. Additionally, they see the vehicle and those inside it as a single unit, so wearing a particular color will not make a difference. To prove this, my guide wore bright red patterned pants on many of our game drives. The animals did not bat an eye. If you want to wear hot pink on your safari, nothing should stop you!

African Safari Packing List

Now you know what to wear on an African safari. To ensure you do not forget any of the items I mentioned in this article, I put together an African safari packing list. I also included some other items that were essential to my successful experience.

• Hat (or Shemagh scarf )
• Lightweight long-sleeve pullover sweatshirt/zip-up jacket for cold mornings and evenings
• Lightweight long-sleeve shirts
• Comfortable short-sleeve shirts
• Lightweight pants (and/or convertible cargo pants)
• Hiking boots (sneakers may also work)
• Reusable water bottle
• Camera (preferably with a long lens) and batteries
• Bug spray with DEET or picaridin lotion
• Malaria pills (if necessary – talk to your doctor)
• Energy chews

What To Wear On Safari: My Detailed Safari Packing List With Photos

You’ve all seen the brochure photos: a smiling family is sitting at a camping table in the middle of the African bush. Behind them, the sun is setting, and perhaps a giraffe is crossing the savanna landscape.

What are they wearing? I’m sure you can picture it: lightweight designer safari gear, all matching, in indistinguishable shades of beige, taupe and camel. Maybe the dad is wearing khaki chinos and the mum has a floppy-brimmed hat (colour: putty) on her head. They all have sand-coloured lace-up boots on, and from head to toe all their clothes are pristine, clean, and crease-free.

If it’s your first time figuring out what to wear on safari, it might feel like this is the model you have to follow. Like, having booked the blindingly expensive trip of a lifetime, you now have to go out and splurge hundreds more on the ‘proper’ kit, otherwise people will laugh at you and you may even get into trouble for not doing it right.

Well I’m here to reassure you: that’s rubbish.

What should you wear on safari?

I’ve been on five safaris (to Kenya , Botswana , Tanzania , Uganda and South Africa) and I still don’t own any ‘official’ safari clothes. I’ve always worn stuff I already own and been just fine.

That said, there are some dos and don’ts about packing for a safari, some things it’s a good idea to make sure you bring with you, and some stuff you should definitely leave at home.

So welcome to my complete safari packing guide. I’m going to go through a few points and FAQs, and then make a handy list at the end. Scroll down if you just want to skip ahead to that.

What happens on a safari?

Days on safari follow a similar schedule. You wake early and head out shortly after sunrise for a morning activity – usually a game drive but sometimes a boat cruise, guided walk, or scenic flight.

You return to the camp mid-morning for brunch and have some hours to relax in the heat of the day before heading out again for another activity later in the afternoon. Your afternoon game drive or boat cruise normally ends with sunset drinks in a beautiful location, before you head back to the camp for dinner.

After dinner you might sit round the campfire or boma enjoying a few drinks with your fellow guests, but most people go to bed fairly early, ready for another dawn start the next day.

What to wear on safari during the day

The most important thing to note is that a safari is not a fashion show. It can be hot and dusty, or rainy and muddy, so it’s important to dress for comfort and practicality, so leave the designer gear, luxury fabrics and bling jewellery at home. Instead, bring stuff that washes easily, dries quickly and hides the dirt well!

You’ll also be coating yourself daily in suncream and insect repellent, so don’t bring anything that won’t mix well with those!

When I was in Botswana in December, some days reached 40 degrees C (104 F) with high humidity, so think lightweight breathable fabrics like cotton, viscose or sweat-wicking sportswear, or even linen if you don’t mind the creases).

T-shirts and shorts are your friends, but I’d avoid strappy vests for two reasons:

• Many African countries are quite conservative, and it doesn’t do to flash a lot of skin.
• The sun is extremely strong and the more skin you show, the more of you there is to get burned, even in a shaded safari car.

What to wear on a game drive or boat cruise

On wildlife viewing trips you’ll be sitting in a car for several hours, so it’s important to be comfortable. T-shirts and shorts are a great option.

Early mornings in Africa can be chilly, so bring a long-sleeved shirt, light sweater or jacket just in case.

Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. Safari cars have roofs, but sometimes the roof rolls back so you can stand up, and when the sun is low in the sky it can shine in from the side very strongly. I was surprised by how much I ended up needing my hat.

Since you won’t be walking around much, light sneakers or sandals are fine.  

Safari cars are open-sided, so if it rains you may get a bit wet. Most safari companies carry ponchos in the car, to hand out to guests when it rains, but you might want to bring your own light waterproof raincoat just in case.

What to wear on a walking safari

For a walking safari the principles are the same, but you should wear long trousers to prevent your legs being cut or scratched by branches, and closed-toed shoes to protect you from biting or stinging animals or insects.

Although walking safaris can sometimes last for three or four hours, you don’t actually walk that far because there’s a lot of stopping and looking at stuff. So you don’t need hiking boots; comfortable trainers or walking shoes are fine. If you’re travelling in rainy season you might want to bring waterproof or Gore-Tex ones.

Do I need warm clothes on safari?

We think of Africa as being hot, and it is, but it can also be extremely cold. If you travel during the northern hemisphere summer, that’s winter in most of Africa, and temperatures can drop below freezing especially in desert areas, if you’re at altitude, and the further south you go.

In Botswana and South Africa during the winter, average nighttime temperatures can be 0 or even -2 degrees C (28-32 F), and remember that most safari cabins and tents are not heated!

Even in Kenya, which is much closer to the equator and therefore not as cold, nights and early mornings can definitely be chilly.

Staff in camps will provide you with hot water bottles and blankets both in your tent and on game drives, but you still need to bring warm clothes with you as well.

If you’re travelling to the southern African countries between April and October, I’d recommend bringing at least one pair of long trousers, one long-sleeved top, one jumper, and a packable down jacket.

But remember to dress in layers, as the day quickly warms once the sun’s up, and even if it’s close to freezing during the night, afternoon temperatures can ramp up to high 20s (70+ F) or more.

It’s very important to check the weather forecast before you travel, as different regions’ climates can vary.

What colour should you wear on safari?

It’s recommended that you wear plain designs in neutral, earthy or natural colours, such as shades of beige, grey, brown or natural greens.

Avoid vibrant, bright colours like orange, red and yellow, or vivid patterns. This is for two reasons:

• It helps to make you less noticeable to animals.
• You can get pretty dusty on safari, and natural shades don’t show the dirt so much!

Bright white and full black are also not recommended. This is not only because they show the dust really badly, but because many animals actually only see in black and white, and large gleaming white shapes or dark black ones are very noticeable to them.

With that all said, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, and you certainly don’t need to rush out and buy an entire new wardrobe full of khaki and beige. As I just mentioned, many animals only see in black and white, and when you’re inside the car, most only see the car as one large object, and not the people inside.

It’s more important to stick to the rules when you’re on a walking safari and don’t have the protection of the car.

But in general, if you pack plain, neutral-ish colours, you’ll be fine.

Why not wear blue on safari?

Some people recommend not wearing blue on safari. Apart from being a pretty noticeable bright colour, it’s said to attract tsetse flies, which are prevalent in some areas of southern Africa and can deliver a nasty bite and spread disease. They are also thought to prefer black (another reason not to wear it).

That said, my light down jacket is bright blue, and I also took a blue t-shirt and a pale blue cardigan to Kenya, and I wore all three with no problems.

What to wear on safari evenings

Most people like to dress up when they go on holiday, so you might think about throwing a few glamorous dresses, high heels or some party shirts into your suitcase.

But you probably won’t wear them. Even in the luxury camps, most people really don’t dress up for dinner, for four main reasons:

• At night it’s a good idea to cover your arms and legs to avoid insect bites, so floaty skirts and strappy tops are a bad idea.
• It can get quite chilly at night, so you’ll probably be more comfortable in trousers and a fleece anyway.
• You’ll be tired after a long day and an early start; you’ll probably find you can’t be bothered to dress for dinner as you’ll be going to bed soon afterwards anyway.
• Walking round camp after dark you may run into snakes or spiders, and paths can be muddy and uneven, so high-heels are a definite no-no.

When I was in Botswana in December (the height of their summer) it was still 30+ degrees (86 F) in the evening, so I wore lightweight trousers or a long casual dress and then liberally coated myself with insect repellent. In Kenya in September it was a bit cooler, around low 20s (70 F), so I wore trousers, a t-shirt and a light cardigan, and had my jacket handy for later in the evening as the temperature dropped.

Is it OK to wear jeans on safari?

It’s perfectly fine to bring a pair of jeans for the cooler evenings, especially if you’re travelling in winter when you know it will be chilly at night.

However jeans aren’t recommended for game drives as you’ll probably be too hot in them during the day, and if you need to wash them they’ll take ages to dry.

As a general rule I wouldn’t take jeans on safari but instead bring lightweight trousers. The convertible zip-off ones that turn into shorts are especially good as you can have long pants for cold mornings and safari walks, and convert them into shorts once the day’s warmed up.

Pro tip: Whatever you choose to bring, make sure you have some ‘room to grow’! The food on safari is usually really good and you won’t be doing much exercise, so stretchy waistbands are a good idea!

Can you wear leggings on safari?

Yes, absolutely. Leggings are a great thing to bring on safari because they’re lightweight, wash and dry easily, are comfortable, and protect you from bugs and the sun. Just stick to neutral colours and leave the snazzy activewear designs at home!

I always pack a pair of leggings for safari – and if there’s a gym in the hotel then I can also use them for a workout!

What are the best shoes to wear on safari?

As I mentioned above, high heels and smart shoes are definitely not the thing to bring on safari. For game drives it’s fine to wear sandals or light sneakers, and for safari walks you want closed-toed comfortable walking shoes.  You definitely don’t need to buy special safari boots, no matter what the sales people might say.

If your lodge or hotel has a pool, you might want to bring some flipflops (also handy to have for walking around in your tent at night, or for nipping to the bathroom block if you’re staying in a campsite).

Can you wear trainers on safari?

Yes, absolutely. I always pack a pair of Asics Gore-Tex trail trainers that I wear for exercise, when it’s muddy or raining, and for walking or hiking. On game drives and boat cruises, and for walking around the camp in the evening, I have a pair of Skechers Go-Walk sneakers that are super comfortable and easy to slip on and off.

What to pack for the beach in Kenya or Tanzania

Many people like to combine their safari with a few days on the beach, perhaps in Zanzibar in Tanzania, or at Diani or Vipingo in Kenya .

Here’s where you will get the chance to dress up a bit – as if you’re staying in a nice hotel or beach resort destination, there will definitely be opportunities to put on a strappy dress, holiday shirt, or some sparkly sandals.

If you’re planning to hit the beach for a few days at the end of your trip, you’ll definitely want to throw in one or two nice evening outfits. And don’t forget swimwear and a beach cover-up too!

Can you wash clothes on safari?

This is a very important question, and the answer is yes! Almost all safari lodges and camps offer a laundry service and most of the time it’s included in the price of your stay. So you can wash your clothes as often as you like at no extra cost – which means you really don’t need to bring huge amounts of luggage as you can wash and re-wear your clothes several times.

Note that in many places the laundry is done by hand by the hotel staff, dried out in the sun, and ironed using an old-fashioned coal iron. This is yet another reason not to bring anything too delicate or precious, as there’s a small chance it may get damaged during the laundry process.

What sort of underwear should I bring for safari?

Ladies: remember that you may spend many hours bouncing around over unsealed and bumpy roads in the back of a safari car. Being quite an athletic build, this is not something that’s ever bothered me, but I’ve been reliably informed by more curvy girls that a sports bra can be a life-saver in this situation. So if you’re particularly susceptible to bouncing, bring sports bras!

It’s also important to note that the people who handwash your clothes are usually male, and for cultural and hygiene reasons they won’t wash women’s underwear. Ladies will need to bring a small amount of hand wash (though sometimes laundry soap is provided) and wash your own pants and bras in the basin. For this reason it’s a good idea not to bring anything too fancy or delicate: lightweight, quick-drying microfibre underwear is best.

Other things to pack for safari

Of course, packing is not all about clothes. Here are a few other things you won’t want to forget (more in the complete packing list below):

Camera, spare batteries, chargers, plug adapters

Can you imagine going all that way on safari on the trip of a lifetime and then forgetting your phone charger or camera? I know, I’d die!

So definitely make sure you pack all your gadgets, and all the cables and plugs you’ll need to make them work! And then bring spares!

Often hotel rooms and safari tents only have a limited number of plug sockets, so if you have loads of gadgets, it’s a good idea to bring a multi-socket splitter. I recommend one with surge protection : power cuts can happen frequently and if there’s a surge when the power comes back, your devices can get fried. This happened to me the night before my Tanzania safari , so now I’m extra careful!

Medication and toiletries

Most of the places you’ll be staying will be out in the bush, with limited access to shops. Make sure you bring all the toiletries, medicines and personal items you’ll need, as once you leave the airport, opportunities to replace anything that’s missing will be very limited.

Do you need malaria tablets for safari?

Large parts of Africa have malaria, including popular safari countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, so it’s very likely that you may need to take malaria tables on safari. I usually take doxycycline which is cheaper than malarone, but may not be suitable for everyone so speak to your pharmacist or travel clinic.

You can check the malaria risk for the country you’re visiting, as well as any other vaccine requirements at the Travel Health Pro website here .

Some countries also require you to have a proof of yellow fever vaccination – you can check if this is needed on the website above as well. For example, places like Kenya and Tanzania won’t let you in without proof of vaccination if you’ve spent time in a yellow-fever-risk country before arriving. If you have already had your yellow fever jab, make sure you pack the certificate!

What to wear for safari in Tanzania

Best suitcase for safari

This is important, so pay attention! Many safaris involve internal transfers by tiny plane or even helicopter. They all have pretty strict packing rules, with a maximum of 15 kg weight per person and no hard-shelled suitcases allowed. Luggage must be soft sided, and don’t overpack! You shouldn’t need to anyway, since you can wash everything when you’re there.

Wheels are OK as long as it’s a soft bag, so I recommend a soft holdall with or without wheels, or a wheely backpack like the one I have and love . This one came to Kenya and Botswana with me with no trouble at all.

Packing for safari for photographers

If, like me, you’re travelling with 15 kg of camera gear, don’t stress. The little internal plane operators are used to photographers and will let you put your backpack of gear at the back of the plane. I travelled with 15 kg of hold luggage and another 15 kg of camera gear around Botswana and Kenya, and it was never an issue.

What should you NOT take on safari?

Now I’ve told you all the things you should bring on safari, here are a few things it’s a good idea to leave at home.

Perfume: No one in your safari car will thank you for dosing yourself liberally with Eau de Whatever, and if you wear a very strong scent it may even allow animals to detect you sooner and run away faster.

Hairdryer: Many safari camps run on solar power and cannot support a hairdryer. Those that can (if they’re on the grid, or running off a generator), will usually provide one that’s suited to the electricity supply. As I said, no one really worries too much about their appearance or cares about what your hair looks like on safari anyway.

Camouflage clothing: This might surprise you, but wearing military-style camo print clothing is a no-no in many African countries, where it’s associated with the military. It’s actually illegal to wear camo gear in Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Plastic bags: Disposable plastic bags are banned in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. You should be fine with the little zip-lock one for your liquids on the plane, and I’ve used reusable plastic packing bags many times with no problems, but try to keep plastic bags to a minimum or you may get a fine.

A drone: Unless you have special permission, drones are not allowed in most lodges and African National Parks.

Expensive watches, jewellery, and other valuable items: This doesn’t just apply to African safaris but to all travel. Jewellery can easily get lost, damaged or stolen, so if you care about it, leave it at home.

A hard-shelled suitcase: As mentioned above, all safari companies ask you to bring a soft bag or at most a wheeled soft holdall , as these are much easier to pack into the small luggage spaces on planes and in cars. You will not be thanked if you bring rigid-sided luggage.

Where to buy safari clothing

For the most part, you don’t need any specialist clothing for safari. You can wear your own normal clothes. However, there are some great companies that do excellent clothes for travel, in suitable colours, and made from practical fabrics that are sweat-wicking, comfortable and don’t crease.

My favourite brands for travel clothes are The North Face , Patagonia , Rab , Mountain Equipment , Arc’teryx and Craghoppers , and my favourite places to shop in the UK are Ellis Brigham and Cotswold Outdoor , which stock all these brands at competitive prices, have high-street stores where you can get advice and try stuff on, and often have good end-of-season sales too.

What to wear on safari: my Africa packing list

So now we’ve gone through the details, here’s what I would pack for a 10-day or two-week safari in Africa.

What to wear on safari: Clothes

• T-shirts in neutral or earthy colours x 5. The green t-shirt in the photo above is by Mountain Equipment . I love it so much I bought three!
• Long trousers x 1 pair. I really like my lightweight ones from The North Face .
• Shorts x 1 pair.
• Convertible trousers that zip-off into shorts, or a second pair of shorts . North Face and Craghoppers both do good convertible trousers for men and women .
• Leggings . I’m a big fan of Sweaty Betty.
• Long-sleeved shirt for covering up in bright sunshine.
• Lightweight jumper or cardigan for chilly evenings.
• Lightweight jacket , fleece or mid layer for cold nights. I have a fleece from Arc’teryx and a mine is a Nano puff from  Patagonia .
• Waterproof jacket . I have two, a lovely Zeta LT by  Arc’teryx  and a packable Meridien jacket by  Rab .
• Dress or smart shirt for the evening if you’re going to a city or the beach (x2). For packable jersey or lightweight viscose dresses I love Boden , Sugarhill Brighton and Joanie Clothing .
• Gym kit – if you think you’ll need or use it. But many safari camps don’t have fitness equipment and you can’t go for a run in the bush or you might get chased by a predator!
• Sports bras or comfortable wireless bralettes x 3.
• Underwear x 7. If you’re staying for longer you’ll need to handwash. I recommend something quick-drying and non-delicate like these microfibre ones from M&S .
• Swimwear . I get cute bikinis and swimwear from M&S , Next , or Pour Moi .
• Sarong or cover up (if you’re spending time on the beach)
• Sandals or flip flops . I love my walking sandals by Teva .
• Trainers or walking shoes for exercise and walking safaris. Mine are Gore-Tex trail trainers from Asics .
• Soft sneakers for walking round the camp, game drives and boat cruises. I’m a big fan of Skechers Go Walks .

Pro tip: if you’re going to the beach and plan to do a lot of snorkelling, pack a rash vest or t-shirt to swim in. The sun is super strong and we all got very burnt even though we were wearing Factor 50!

What to pack for safari in winter

If the forecast is for cold weather, I would add:

• Another long-sleeved top or baselayer .
• A warmer, packable insulated jacket .
• A pair of jeans.
• Beanie hat.

What to pack for safari: Accessories

• Baseball cap or hat. My cap is this one this one by Buff and I really like it.
• Scarf or buff to keep dust off (and you can dip it in water to cool you down on very hot days)
• Headphones or ear buds (for the plane), you won’t need them on the actual safari! I have these ones which are pretty good and much cheaper than Apple ones.
• Eye mask and ear plugs (if you’re a light sleeper).
• Camera, batteries, memory cards and charger
• Charger cables for all your devices
• Portable phone charger. Mine is this one from Anker .
• Plug adapter for the country you’re going to, or a universal plug adapter
• Plug splitter or 3-way adapter with surge protection
• Refillable water bottle (though some safari companies provide them, so check). An insulated water bottle will keep your water colder for longer on hot days.
• A padlock for your luggage to protect you from airport thieves

Safari packing list: Toiletries

As well as all your usual toiletries and medications, don’t forget:

• Suncream. I swear by  Riemann P20  because it’s hard wearing and you only need to apply it once a day. Or for the best face SPF you will ever find, that’s non-greasy and non-orange (!), I love  this one from the Body Shop .
• Insect repellant (though this is often provided in camp).
• Malaria tablets ( check to see if these are required in your destination )

Pro tip: Luggage goes missing more and more frequently these days, so pack your medication or anything else vital in your hand luggage.

The desert presents unique challenges with its extreme weather conditions—scorching hot days and chilly nights. Dressing appropriately will help you stay comfortable and safe in this harsh environment.

The essentials:

Lightweight and breathable fabrics are key in the desert. Look for quick-dry clothing which also allows your skin to breathe and keep you cool. It’s also important to protect your skin from the sun, so pack a wide-brimmed hat , sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Don’t forget:

In the desert, it’s important to stay hydrated. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it often. You may also want to pack a scarf or bandana to protect your face and neck from the sun and sand.

Pack a hydration pack or utility belt to keep your water and other essentials close at hand. You may also want to consider packing a sun umbrella to provide extra shade on hot days.

The African Jungle Safari🌴

When it comes to “jungle” safaris, the term generally refers to tropical rainforests rather than the actual savannas commonly associated with African safaris. Here are regions within some of these countries that offer a more jungle-like experience:

• Uganda : Known for its lush landscapes, Uganda offers jungle safaris in places like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you can go gorilla trekking.
• Madagascar : This island nation is more of a tropical paradise with rainforests, making it a jungle safari destination. Andasibe and other national parks offer a unique jungle experience.
• Ethiopia : While not a jungle in the traditional sense, the Simien Mountains offer a different kind of green, rugged terrain that’s rich in wildlife.
• Tanzania : The Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream National Parks offer jungle-like environments, primarily known for chimpanzee trekking.
• Zambia : Parts of Zambia, like the Lower Zambezi, offer lush landscapes that could be considered more jungle-like, especially during the green season.

The jungle is a humid and unpredictable environment, so it’s important to dress in a way that will keep you comfortable and dry. You’ll also need to protect yourself from insects and other hazards.

Quick-dry clothing is a must in the jungle. Look for fabrics like polyester and nylon, which wick away moisture and dry quickly. You’ll also need a pair of waterproof boots to keep your feet dry in the rain and mud. And don’t forget to pack bug repellent!

Pack a rain poncho or jacket in case of unexpected showers. A wide-brimmed hat is also a good idea to protect you from the sun and rain.

Pack a pair of zip-off pants or roll-up pants so you can convert them to shorts or capris if needed. Multi-use gear is also a good idea, such as a scarf that can be used as a head covering or a neck wrap.

The African Savanna Safari🌾

The classic savanna safari—a timeless experience that never loses its charm! Here’s where you can find those iconic, sweeping grasslands:

• Kenya : The Maasai Mara is the epitome of a savanna safari, complete with the Great Migration if you time it right.
• Tanzania : The Serengeti is another iconic savanna landscape, and it’s part of the same ecosystem as the Maasai Mara.
• South Africa : Kruger National Park offers a mix of savanna, woodland, and bush, providing a well-rounded safari experience.
• Botswana : The Okavango Delta is a unique wetland in the middle of the Kalahari savanna, offering a different kind of savanna experience.
• Namibia : Etosha National Park has its own kind of savanna—more arid but still teeming with wildlife.
• Zimbabwe : Hwange National Park is primarily a mix of woodland and savanna, offering a classic safari experience.
• Zambia : South Luangwa National Park offers a mix of savanna and woodland, making for a diverse safari experience.
• Uganda : While known for its jungles, Uganda also has savanna regions like Queen Elizabeth National Park.
• Madagascar : While not a traditional savanna, the central highlands offer a unique kind of grassland experience.
• Ethiopia : The lower Omo Valley offers a type of savanna landscape, although it’s not the primary draw for most visitors to Ethiopia.

The savanna is a diverse environment with a variety of weather conditions, so it’s important to pack clothes that are both versatile and comfortable. You’ll also need to dress in a way that won’t disturb the wildlife.

Layer your clothing so you can adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day. Pack sturdy and breathable footwear , as you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

Bring a pair of binoculars to enhance your wildlife viewing experience. And don’t forget to pack sunscreen!

Pack a multi-pocket vest to store your essentials, such as sunscreen and binoculars . UV-protective clothing is also a good idea, as it offers an extra layer of protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Colors for every occasion:

Choose neutral colors (shades of khaki, brown, beige/tan, and green) that won’t startle the animals.

What NOT to wear on an African safari, ever:

• Avoid wearing white as it stands out more than any other color.
• Avoid dark colors since they also stand out in the bush but these colors also attract tsetse flies.
• Avoid patterns as these can startle the animals.
• Avoid wearing camoflauge. In some countries, wearing camoflauge is a no-no; you could be mistaken for someone in the military, possibly targeted, detained, or fined.
• Avoid heavy fabrics, as they can trap heat and make you feel uncomfortable.
• Avoid wearing cotton clothing, as it absorbs moisture and takes a long time to dry.
• Avoid wearing open-toed shoes, as these can leave your feet exposed to insects, to the hot sand and rocks, and to other unthinkable hazards.
• Avoid, ABSOLUTELY AVOID , wearing any perfume, or strongly-scented hairspray or body spray/wash. You’ll attract insects and repel the animals.

Ultimate African Safari Packing List and Outfit Ideas

An African Safari is an amazing bucket list vacation . If you fortunate enough to be planning a safari vacation, you are in for a treat! Once you plan an African Safari , you are likely wondering what should be on your safari packing list.

Unlike other vacations, packing for an Africa safari takes a bit more thought and consideration. There are packing restrictions, color limitations and comfort to consider.

In addition, there are many extras to pack such as a headlamp and binoculars that you may not need for a traditional vacation.

The first time I went on safari, I remember my family frantically shopping for a new wardrobe that fit into the neutral color scheme. We stocked up on bug proof clothing, adventure wear, and supplies, then crossed our fingers that we packed correctly.

I’ve since been on three African safari’s and have mastered the art of what to wear on a safari. This packing list will take out the guess work for you by outlining exactly what you need to bring on your safari vacation.

What to Wear on a Safari

As I mentioned, packing for an Africa safari is more complicated than packing for an average trip. Here are some important things to consider when planning your packing list for African safari.

Neutral colors – The color scheme for safari is neutrals, such as green, khaki, beige, brown, and light grey. This is for your protection from insects and optimal game viewing.

Casual safari clothing – Even a luxury safari packing list should consist of casual clothing. This seems counterintuitive when staying in a 5 star luxury resort, but safari is meant to be a rugged, adventurous experience.

Layering – The temperatures in sub-Saharan Africa can fluctuate widely throughout the day. Layering is your best friend to stay comfortable from below freezing to 80 degrees over the course of a day.

Pack light – Since you will be travelling in small plane and safari vehicles, there are weight and luggage restrictions for safari. Packing light is key!

Packing Restrictions for Safari

One of the main complications of a safari packing list is meeting all the packing restrictions set by the tour companies.

Weight Restrictions : Many tour companies will limit the weight of your luggage to 35 pounds to account for the small internal flights you will take.

Luggage Restrictions : Since tour companies transfer your bags between small planes and jeeps, pack soft-sided luggage such as backpacks or duffel bags for easily storage.

Building a Safari Capsule Wardrobe

To prepare for this limited amount of packing, utilize a capsule wardrobe to be able to mix and match a small amount of clothing items. A capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothing items that can be combined create different outfits. Typically, a capsule wardrobe includes staple pieces in the same color scheme so they can be combined make up a capsule wardrobe.

Additionally, many safari outfitters will include laundry in the price of the tour. At a few lodges, you will be able to get overnight laundry, allowing you to re-wear outfits easily.

Below are three helpful tips for packing for safari and two examples of safari capsule wardrobes.

Safari Packing Tip #1 – Stick to the Neutrals

An important guideline for a safari packing list is the colors to wear on safari. Tour operators strongly discourage certain colors for safety and comfort reasons. Some of these colors can be difficult to find and may need to be purchased specially for safari.

Colors TO Wear on Safari

The best colors to wear on safari are light blues, greens, browns, greys, and tans. Fortunately, these colors tend to match, making capsule wardrobes easy. The below collages are fantastic examples of how to create a capsule safari wardrobe.

One great option for a safari capsule wardrobe is a mixture of blues and browns . For clothing items, I love convertible pants like these that can be worn as both shorts and pants to save packing space. Also jumpsuits are super easy to throw on, are fashionable, and super comfortable.

An alternative color scheme for your safari outfits is greens and greys, shown above. You don’t have to be strict and only pack in one scheme, but it will make mixing and matching very simple.

Colors NOT to Wear on Safari

Black/ Navy Blue – Dark colors such as black and navy attract bugs such as mosquitos and tsetse flies. Since these bugs are annoying and carry harmful diseases, it is best to stay away from these colors. This means to leave your jeans and black leggings at home.

Camouflage – Camo is a popular print right now and falls into the suggested green color category. However, many people in African countries associate camouflaged print with military and its even illegal in some places.

Red – Animals in Kenya and Tanzania associate red with the local Masai warriors. Animals avoid this color to avoid being hunted. To not scare off the wildlife, be sure to not pack any red or other bright colors.

White – White is ok in moderation, but easily get’s dirty and will be difficult to re-wear.

What to Wear on Safari Tip #2 – Materials Matter

As mentioned above, comfort is key when deciding what to wear on safari. Focus on materials that are moisture wicking, comfortable to sit in, and breathable.

The temperature on safari will have a wide range, depending on the time of day and location. On my trip, we experienced near freezing temperatures in the morning and in mountain locations. We also experienced warm, summer weather during the day at lower elevations.

To best dress for the heat, focus on clothes that are breathable for the heat, but easily layered to stay warm. Materials such as performance fabric, linen, and high quality cotton are great options.

Africa Safari Outfit Tip #3 – Wear Versatile Clothing

Since packing space is limited, it’s important to find clothes that can be dressed up, dressed down, and paired with a variety of other clothing items. This will allow you to wear different outfits with a few staple pieces.

To demonstrate this idea, here are a few examples:

Kuhl Womens Freeflex Dash Pant – These pants are a great staple piece for safari. The material is comfortable, durable, and hides dirt easily. The pants have a built in cinch at the hem that allows them to be worn as a straight-leg or jogger style. This versatility allows you to have two pants in one.

Kuhl Konstance Tank – This tank top is another example of a versatile piece of clothing for safari. It can be paired with different bottoms or layered with a jacket to create a completely different look. The cut is also super flattering and the material is soft and breathable.

The Best Shoes to Wear on Safari

Hiking Boot

If you are doing any hiking on your trip, a hiking boot is a must. These are super comfortable for all-day wear and come in safari-friendly colors.

Hiking Shoe

If you are not hiking, save space and bring a hiking shoe instead of a boot. These have plenty of support for walking around camp and the bush.

Sturdy Sandal

In addition to a sneaker, a pair of adventure sandals is great for around camp or on game drives. I even wear these on short hikes because they’re so comfy.

Safari Packing List: Clothes and Shoes

• 1 Pair of Walking shoes : Even though you will spend most of the day in vehicles, it is important to have sturdy shoes for any walking that you may do. The African bush has uneven ground and dirt, so sturdy shoes like these are important.
• 1 Pair of Sandals : In addition to your hiking/walking shoes, pack a pair of sturdy sandals to wear around camp or in the safari vehicle.
• Convertible Jacket : Depending on the area, temperature can range from freezing to 80+ degrees during your safari trip. Be sure to include a convertible jacket, like this 3-in-1 option on your safari packing list.
• Tops : For a 7-10 day safari, I recommend packing three short sleeve shirts, one long sleeve shirt, and two button up shirts for layering
• Pants : Bring one pair of pants for every three days of safari and 1-2 pairs of shorts for the entire trip.
• Swimsuit : This item is easily overlooked, but you will appreciate the swimwear to spend time in resort pools.
• Safari hat : A good safari hat will protect from sun and bugs.

Safari Packing List: Other Important Items

• Headlamp : Many lodges and camps will have outdoor pathways connecting common areas to rooms. At night, the paths can be hard to see, so a headlamp can be helpful for hands-free lighting.
• Binoculars : Binoculars are critical for seeing faraway animals.
• Camera : Safari is prime for getting amazing photographs. If you have a good camera or are thinking of buying one, make sure it makes it on your safari packing list.
• Phone zoom attachment : iPhone attachments can help enhance phone photos.
• Insect repellent : As mentioned above, it is important to keep bugs off you. Pack bug spray with deet or bug-off wipes for daily use.
• Sunscreen : Wear sunscreen daily for protection from the near-equator sunshine.
• Cash : It’s super important to bring all the cash you will need for your trip. ATMs are very hard to come by in the bush, and often local currencies are not preferred. Bring enough new, crisp, US dollars for tips and purchasing souvenirs.

Summary of What to Wear on a Safari

The most important aspect of an African safari packing list is focusing on essentials that will provide comfort, safety, and function. Be sure to utilize layers in complimentary colors to make your items go far. Do not forget the other essential items like bug spray and a headlight.

Dinner attire on safari is very casual, even at luxury resorts. You can often wear what you wore on safari that day, such as long pants, hiking shoes, and a button down top. If you prefer to change your outfit, something simple like a green jumpsuit or linen set is very appropriate.

Most safaris require you to pack in soft-sided luggage such as a duffel bag. I recommend a duffel bag that is waterproof and a scratch-resistant material. In addition, there are weight limits for safari, so ensure your bag is the appropriate size to not be overweight.

The best colors to wear on safari are neutrals such as green, beige, brown, grey, and light blue.

I do not recommend wearing jeans on a safari. First, they are often dark blue which is a big no-no for tsetse flies. In addition, jeans are not breathable or flexible for active days.

What to Wear on a Safari in Africa

When you’re on safari, you want to blend into nature as much as possible. Sure, you’re going to be in a big truck and clearly not a part of nature, but you still want to be hard for the animals to spot. For example, sometimes guides won’t want you to stand up in the vehicle because some animals will run when they see the outline of a human (at least that’s what I heard).

Safari Clothing Colors

Certain colors work best on safari. You want to wear neutral, nature tones, like olive green and beige . You can even get away with browns and very neutral colors and still look the part, but avoid white (too bright in the sun), black or dark blue. These dark colors attract Tsetse flies which have a painful bite, so if nothing else, just avoid dark colors.

You also want to avoid wearing anything camouflage on safari, just to be safe. Many African countries actually prohibit wearing camo.

Truthfully, I’m not sure how much it matters what color you wear as far as the animals are concerned. Like I said, you’re in a truck the whole time so it may or may not really make a difference if you wear the classic safari outfits. For me, it was really important to get the full safari experience, clothes and all. And I imagine you’re reading this because you feel the same. 🙂

Choosing the Right Fabrics for Your Safari Outfits

You’re going to be spending hours outside (maybe even your entire day for full-day safaris), so you want to choose lightweight, breathable fabrics that will be comfortable through heat, sweat and wind.

Man-made performance fabrics that are breathable and sweat-wicking will work great, as well as quality cotton, linen and even wool.

Keep in mind you want to be able to protect yourself from the sun and easily add/remove layers for when it’s cold in the morning and evening.

Safari Clothes Comfort

When on safari, you need to be comfortable more than anything . You’re going to be sitting in a truck bumping up an down for hours on end (don’t worry it’s way more fun than it sounds) and it’s so important that your clothes don’t take away from your experience.

Another thing to know is that you may be using the bathroom…in the bush. Yes, I mean outside. Behind the truck. So you definitely want to wear clothes that you can quickly squat down in and do your business.

Skip the jeans and find comfortable pants in a neutral tone like olive green or beige. You could wear cotton pants, leggings, a jumpsuit or even shorts. Just make sure to check the weather of your destination and how bad the mosquitos are so you’re covered up enough for the conditions.

Remember, you’ll likely be starting your safari around 6:30am and many African countries get pretty cold. On my recent safari in Masai Mara, Kenya in October, the mornings were around 60°F. I’d wear a sweater over my outfit, then wrap up in the traditional Masai wraps our safari guide gave us.

For tops, you want to keep sun protection in mind as well as comfort. Even though you’re in a vehicle, you still get a decent amount of sun.

A thin button up shirt with sleeves that can roll up is perfect for sun protection. However, I recommend wearing a lighter top, like a tank top or lightweight t-shirt, and bringing the button up along. That way you’re comfortable at the warmest part of the day, and you can put on a layer if you get cold or need sun protection.

You could even wear a dress for the day as long as it’s long enough to keep you warm in the mornings. I didn’t bring a dress on my trip, but I wish I did! It would have been so comfy and convenient.

Pack a good sun hat with a neck strap, a scarf to protect your neck (even better if you can use it as a shawl for sun protection) and a lightweight sweater or jacket to get you through chilly mornings.

On safari, you can wear pretty much any shoes you want, including tennis shoes, boots or sandals. If you do go the sandals route, I recommend wearing a sturdy pair like Birkenstocks or even Rainbows, versus thin rubber flip flops. You don’t do too much walking on safari, except when stopping in the bush to eat lunch or use the bathroom. The Masai Tribe people all wear sandals, if that helps convince you. 😉

I was DEAD SET on wearing boots on my safari in Kenya. I just couldn’t see the perfect safari outfits in my mind working with anything but boots. After searching high and low for bougie leather boots and returning THREE pairs of $175 boots that didn’t fit, I ended up getting chic, simple rain boots for under $35!  I absolutely love the boots because they’re waterproof, stylish and extremely comfortable.

Safari Outfits Ideas & Examples

Okay, now that you have an idea of the types of safari clothes to wear, let’s get into examples.

Safari Outfit #1

Top: Thin, pale green tank top .

Bottoms: High-waisted cotton pants in olive green .

Shoes: Black rain boots .

Outerwear: Thin cotton scarf that doubles as a shawl and beige sweater with turtle neck (second picture).

Safari Outfit #2

Top: Light brown, cotton tank top.

Bottoms: Olive green cotton jumpsuit .

Outerwear: Infinity scarf and beige sweater with turtle neck (not pictured).

Safari Outfit #3

Top: Beige linen beach cover up top.

Bottoms: Olive green exercise leggings from American Eagle.

How to Find Affordable Outfits for Safari

Your African safari trip is going to be expensive enough. There’s no reason to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe for it. By combining new and thrifted items with that you already have, you can create amazing safari outfits that look killer in pictures, without breaking the bank.

I got all the pieces I needed to complete my safari wear for $100 by shopping used at Goodwill and a local boutique. Here’s how I did it.

Find the Safari Clothes in Your Closet

Go through your closet and pull out anything light colored and comfortable that you think could work on safari. Think tees, tanks, sweaters, scarves, pants and leggings. It doesn’t matter how much or little you have, you’re going to build on whatever you need when shopping.

Once you have a pile of safari-type clothes, make a list of the pieces you need so you know what to look for when thrifting.

Finding Safari Clothes at Goodwill or a Thrift Store

If you’re in the United States, it’s likely you have a few Goodwill stores in your area. Head to the one that’s in the wealthiest area near you and plan to spend around three hours shopping.

Once you get to the store, grab a cart and go up and down every single aisle for women’s clothing. Look for olive green and beige clothes specifically, and grab anything in those colors that looks like it might fit you. If your Goodwill is anything like the one in my town, you’ll be shocked at how many cool pieces you find!

Once you have a cart full, head to the dressing rooms. Trying clothes on is *the key* to finding gems at Goodwill or any thrift store, so definitely make time for it. When I tried on all items in my cart, I was shocked at what fit and what didn’t. Sometimes the item that looks like it’s impossible ends up being the best find of the day after you’ve tried it on!

Finding Safari Clothes In Stores & Online

If you don’t find everything you need second-hand, look for safari clothes online. Once you’ve gone through your closet and determined the items you still need, it’s much easier to shop online because you can search for each specific piece. Pinterest is amazing for inspiration (of course!).

I know this post was about wardrobe choices and while i searched for promised upcoming posts, there weren’t any. I am heading off to So Africa in june w a group of somewHat adventurous ladies (ages 20 to 72) and was looking for Sites/articles to point them to where they might find some useful info. . While i safari annually, they are all safari virgins. With that in mind, i might suggest a few additions that may help for a 1st trek into the bush should you post again:

1. Insect repellent. Yes. All camps provide bug spray (some even providing coils to burn in your tent), but i always brIng deet. Never spray 100% on your skin. The best way to use DEET is to spray it on any cotton Clothing or scarf you are wearing. A drop or 2 on the shoulder and sleeve edges and on your socks works miracles For the pre-sunrise drive and for the sundowners. I also bring bandanas. Spray then twist tightly and tie loosely around Your neck.

2. While cotton tees or leggings may seem like a good idea, i prefer fabrics that are easily hand washed and can dry quickly inside your tent. (You haven’t laughed until you hear that obnoxious “affluent” poseur with the LV duffel screaming bloody murder as you catch a glimpse of a huge male baboon scampering away with her undoubtedly expensive red brassiere because she left it on the deck chaise to dry.) it may seem that portland-based columbia sportswear is distributed gratis as you go through immigration because it is omnipresent but its my go to garb.

3. Travel insurance is an absolute must. Full stop. Not just for missed flights but it also came in handy earlier this year when i was thrown out of the land rover after bouncing into and out of a collapsed warthog burrow – and who knew warthogs lived in burrows! The airlift flight to the hospital in lusaka, Zambia, was also covered. American express also replaced the brand new MIRRORLESS canon and the 100-500mm lens since they were both 4 days old.

4. Side trip suggestions are always helpful. The Blixen house, of course. The Sheldrick sanctuary as well. For other locations – Robben island…victoria falls… the wineries…the delta… the only thing i would wave off is the migration. Who really needs to see what can only be DESCRIBED as the world’s LARGEST buffet for the top of africa’s Predatory food chain?

All suggestions are just my two cehts. Enjoy.

Finally! someone who gets that it’s not about spending $400 on a jacket or $300 for a pair of pants! Like you, I picked out of my wardrobe first and hit goodwill and a favorite thrift store for the fill-ins. 3 columbia shirts (2 brand new) total $20. Tuesdays are 25% off for seniors! my local thrift store had a gorgeous exofficio brand new dark green button up shirt that feels like silk for $8..boots from a consignment store (where I had a credit)..cost $0!!! i’d rather have the money to do other things..half the fun is planning and looking for cool items. 🙂 looking forward to my trip this year!

What to Wear on Safari for Women: 10 Cute Safari Outfit Ideas

One of the most challenging things when planning a safari is what to wear…how do I look cute on safari while still choosing practical clothing? I spent weeks researching what to wear and how to prepare, only to realize that looking cute on safari is no easy feat. It’s a challenge to balance comfort, practicality, and style, especially when you’re going on a rugged adventure in the wild. But fear not, fellow fashion-conscious travelers, because with the right tips and tricks, you can look chic AND be prepared on your next safari!

In this post, I’ll share my best advice on what to wear on safari for women and pass along plenty of cute outfit ideas for both day and night. Whether you’re planning a luxury safari or a more budget-friendly trip, these tips will help you pack the perfect safari wardrobe. So, let’s get started and make sure you’re ready to slay on your next safari adventure (while still being comfortable!)

1. What to Wear on Safari for Women: Packing List

I’ll give you a quick packing list on what to wear on safari for women and then give you plenty of tips and outfit inspiration below! Here are some essentials to include on your packing list:

• Lightweight Pants
• Long-sleeve tops (bonus points if they have UPF protection)
• Tanks/ T-shirts to wear under your long-sleeves
• Trail runners (or some kind of sturdy closed-toed shoe)
• Accessories (bandana, scarf, hair scarf)

2. Choose Neutral Colors

When it comes to what to wear on safari for women, neutral colors are your best bet. Avoid bright colors, which can attract unwanted attention from animals and make it more difficult to blend in with your surroundings. Stick to earth tones like khaki, light grey, light blue, and olive green. The good news is these colors all hide dirt pretty well and safaris can get quite dusty. I include a ton of example outfits in my post for inspiration, so keep on scrolling!

I would definitely avoid bright blue and black, as these colors attract tsetse flies. Also avoid camouflage in some countries since it is designated for military use.

3. Pick Clothing Made of Breathable Fabric

When packing for a safari, it’s super important to prioritize comfort. The African sun can be intense, and the dust can be a lot to handle. Go for lightweight, breathable fabrics that will keep you cool and dry. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive, as you’ll want to be able to move easily in your clothes (and lounge in your safari vehicle). On some days, we spent 12 hours bouncing around on safari, so I was incredibly grateful for my comfy attire!

4. Footwear for Safari

While you may be spending most of your time in a vehicle during game drives, you’ll still need a sturdy and comfortable pair of shoes for walking around camp, any guided walks, and bathroom breaks during game drives. Trail runners are a great choice for safari because they offer excellent support, traction, and durability. The uneven ground, animal poo, and prickly bushes can make walking a challenge, so it’s important to have shoes that can handle the terrain. Plus, trail runners are relatively lightweight, making them a comfortable choice for long days in the bush. We mostly stayed in the vehicle, but even for quick bathroom breaks, I definitely preferred sturdy closed-toed shoes.

5. Bring a Hat & Sunglasses

Sun protection is crucial on a safari, and a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are essential. Choose a hat with a wide brim that will protect your face and neck from the sun, and sunglasses with polarized lenses that will reduce glare and help you spot wildlife. When planning out what to wear on safari for women, both of these items are must-haves. Plus, how cute is this hat?

6. How to Look Cute on Safari

Who says you can’t look cute on safari? While comfort should be your top priority, there’s no reason you can’t add some style to your safari attire. Accessories are a great way to add some personality to your outfit. Bring a hair scarf or a pair of earrings to dress up a simple outfit in the evening.

For the daytime, try a scarf or a bandana . A scarf comes in handy keeping you warm on chilly mornings. Plus, bandanas are great for protecting your neck from the sun and keeping dirt out of your face during particularly dusty drives! Go for a lightweight and breathable fabric, and choose a neutral color or pattern that complements your outfits.

7. Consider Wearing a Sports Bra

Safari vehicles are incredibly bumpy, and the last thing you want is to be bouncing around in an unsupportive bra. Not only will a sports bra keep you comfortable on your off-road adventure, but it will also provide support during any walks or hikes you may take. Plus, if you’re in a hot climate, a sports bra made of moisture-wicking material can help keep you cool and dry. When considering what to wear on safari for women, this is an absolute must-have.

8. Dress in Layers

Temperatures can vary greatly throughout the day on a safari, so it’s important to dress in layers. Start with a lightweight base layer, such as a moisture-wicking tank top or t-shirt, and add a long-sleeved shirt on top. Bring a lightweight jacket or fleece for cooler mornings and evenings, and a hat and scarf for sun protection.

For me, it was much cooler than expected in the mornings, so I’d also recommend packing a beanie or something to keep your ears warm. Fortunately, this doesn’t take up much room in your luggage, and it keeps you nice and toasty!

On the other hand, it can get pretty warm during the day. If you feel the heat, you may want to invest in zip-off pants or pack a spare pair of shorts in your bag. However, depending on how bad the bugs are and if you are getting out of the vehicle and doing any walking, you may want to keep those long pants on all the time despite the heat. I only wore shorts a few times – mostly around camp and for short drives during the day when I knew we would be staying in the vehicle.

9. Pack a Swimsuit

Many safari lodges have pools, so it’s a good idea to pack a swimsuit. You’ll be able to cool off after a hot day on safari and relax in the pool. This is an absolute must-pack on your list of what to wear on safari for women (if you have a pool). If you don’t have a pool, you can probably take a miss on the swimsuit because trust me…you do not want to jump in any watering holes on the Serengeti. You never know where a family of angry hippos may be lurking beneath the surface!

10. Prepare for Rain

Even if you’re traveling during the dry season, it’s always a good idea to bring a rain jacket on safari. Weather can be unpredictable, and a sudden rain shower can leave you feeling pretty soggy. Plus, a rain jacket can also double as a windbreaker on cooler mornings or evenings. On some of the super chilly mornings, I definitely doubled up with my fleece and rain jacket just to cut down on the wind.

Pick a lightweight and packable rain jacket, so you can easily stow it in your backpack during game drives. Our safari vehicle had rain jackets available, but I’d recommend bringing one just in case. I actually ended up using the rain jacket much more than expected…the Serengeti had a surprising amount of downpours in September! A rain jacket definitely ranks high on my list for what to wear on safari for women.

11. What to Wear in the Evening

This was one of my biggest questions…do people dress up in the evening on safari? Do I need to bring a different wardrobe? I’m here to answer all of your burning questions on safari eveningwear. The answer? You can wear the exact same thing that you do during the day – though you may want to switch it out for a clean version! Since there are pretty strict baggage allowance requirements on bush planes, this was definitely a relief for me to hear. Deciding what to wear on safari for women is already difficult enough before trying to plan out eveningwear!

My recommendation? Throw on a clean outfit after safari that you can wear on your next day’s adventure. Switch up your footwear for sandals instead of hiking shoes. Bring one dress if you’d like to look pretty one evening, and bring a few accessories to mix it up. I brought a scarf, a pair of earrings, and a couple hair scarves to make myself feel a little more girly some of the evenings. The good news is – it is pretty chill and nobody is going to be judging what you’re wearing!

The one caveat I’d add is that if you are staying in a super high-end lodge, I’d check in and see if there are any requirements. The photo above is from a 5-star lodge, and you can clearly see that my version of “dressing for dinner” is pretty low-key.

12. What NOT to Wear on Safari

While jumpsuits may be on-trend and super cute, they’re not the best choice for a safari. Jumpsuits can be difficult to get in and out of quickly, which is a problem if you need to use the bathroom during a game drive. Imagine having to literally take off the majority of your clothing while standing behind a termite mound (the most common place to use the bathroom) on the Serengeti, and you’ll see why this is a very serious recommendation. Hard pass! Instead, opt for separates for maximum comfort and ease of movement.

Finally, remember that a safari is an adventure, so don’t be afraid to dress for the occasion. Choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t be afraid to add a touch of style. After all, you never know what kind of epic photos you’ll be taking on your safari!

The Ultimate Africa Safari Packing List to Help You Look Stylish & Feel Amazing

You might not be planning to head to Africa anytime soon, but I promise there is something for everyone in this post! I’m sharing a packing list that can be used to help pack for many types of trips and some chic and casual spring and summer outfit ideas. You still here? Okay, awesome!

Bucket List Trip to Africa

Africa has been on my personal bucket list for years. Anyone remember my old video on YouTube where I talk about turning 40 and all the things I still want to do (8 years ago)? I mentioned visiting Africa in that video. Anyway, years later, we planned THE trip… for April 2020. Needless to say, that timeline didn’t work out.  So after years of dreaming, planning, cancellations, etc. we finally made it! This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip that I’m so excited to share with you all!

African Safari Packing List

When we first started planning the trip, I had this clear vision of what I wanted to look like. My inspiration was Meryl Streep’s character in Out Of Africa or  Julia Schlaepfer’s character in the show, 1923 . Have you seen either of those??

Then… I found out I could only bring one 40-lb. duffel bag because of the plane’s weight restrictions. This was maybe one of my greatest packing challenges yet! But I wasn’t ready to give up on my chic African safari outfits…and from what you’ll see from the outfits below, I still got some stylish looks to fit in that duffel! Depending on your specific trip, you might want to pack differently, but if you’re headed to Africa during the dry season, the packing list above will be super helpful.

A few tips and notes…

• Most camps do laundry for you daily (for free) so you only need to pack minimal socks and undies.
• To minimize, you could bring only one pair of shorts and only one jacket. I mostly wore one jacket (you’ll see below).
• I packed two long dresses and wish I had packed one short and one long instead. Which is why you’ll see that reflected in the list above, but you’ll see two maxis below.
• To make packing easier, stick to a color story. You’ll see below that I went with greens, tans, and whites. That is by design as it’s suggested you wear earth tones on safari.
• This list is for anyone traveling during dry season and into fall.
• If you look up other packing lists, you’ll see lots of specific gear to pack vs. more fashion-focused clothing. I don’t think you need serious outdoorsy gear for this trip.
• Make sure that all toiletries, skincare, and makeup are travel sized to cut down on the amount of space you use in your bag.

Outfit #1) White Top & Green Shorts

This first outfit is one I’d wear for spring/summer even at home…no Africa trip necessary! I’m wearing a pretty white eyelet top by Velvet. It’s 100% cotton so it keeps you cool, but you get that arm coverage with the long sleeves. I’ve styled this top with denim shorts and jeans but for this look, I’m wearing a pair of super chic green shorts by DL1961. These shorts have a high waist (12.25”), pleating details on the front, a wider A-line leg style (a must for flattering shorts!), and cool cargo-style details. The cargo trend is very big right now so all of the pieces in this post will be great for your spring/summer wardrobe. On my feet, I’m wearing some Golden Goose sneakers, but you can go with a different, more affordable option. Just make sure it’s a chic and stylish pair of sneakers that are comfortable! I kept the jewelry minimal with a pair of Julie Vos hoops.

Outfit #2) Green Pants, Tan Tee & Veronica Beard Cargo Jacket

Next up, I’m wearing a pair of green Paige pants that you’re going to see A LOT more of in this post. They’re a jogger style with cargo pockets in this gorgeous military green color. They are a 26” inseam, which is perfect for me to wear with boots, sandals, or sneakers. These pants are one of those pieces you can have in your closet to dress up or down and they look SO chic. In this look, I styled them with a tan Nation LTD tee. It has subtle puffed short sleeves, a flattering V-neckline, and button front details. For warmth, I recommend taking a vest like the one I’m wearing above by Patagonia.

Cargo Jacket

Over the vest, I’m wearing a Veronica Beard cargo jacket that you’ll be seeing throughout the rest of this post. This jacket and the Paige pants were my most-worn pieces from this trip. And the jacket has remained a heavy hitter since we returned home. It’s such a gorgeous, special piece with cargo details and a zip-off bottom so you can wear it long or cropped. It’s like you’re getting two jackets for the price of one! Of note, you go on safari early in the morning and during the evening. It gets pretty chilly so you definitely want to wear layers as I did above.

Accessories

To complete the look, I’m wearing a few accessories you’ll be seeing more of in this post…because again, I was only allowed that one duffel bag! I’m wearing my go-to Rag & Bone hat I’ve owned for years. Trust me, it’s worth the investment. Around my neck is a gorgeous neutral, animal-prin scarf from Banana Republic that’s so gorgeous and versatile. I styled it a bunch of ways on the trip. I added a western-inspired belt by ba&sh but you could go with whatever brown belt you already own. On my feet, I’m wearing some Sam Edelman combat boots…comfort was key during this trip and these did the trick! Plus, they’re such a good, neutral pair of boots, I know I’ll wear them again. To finish off the look, I’m wearing some Julie Vos jewelry and my Celine sunglasses.

Outfit #3) Green Romper

Next up, I’m wearing a chic green utility-style romper by Simkahi. I love the cinched waist, oversized lapels, and capped sleeves. It’s that pretty olive green color I tried to tie into all of my outfits with the pants, hat, and a tee you’ll see in some of the looks below. (Sizing note: this runs short so if you have a long torso or are quite tall, I would skip it.) I kept the rest of the look simple and wore a pair of Madewell slide-on sandals that are really comfortable and a great shoe to have in your closet this summer. I only brought three pairs of shoes on this trip…these sandals, the boots from the last look, and the sneakers from the first look. The belt back I’m carrying is from Banana Republic and was perfect for carrying the essentials and being hands-free. I completed the look with a Julie Vos bracelet, a pair of hoops, a subtle Monica Vinader necklace, and come sunglasses.

Outfit #4) Tan Tee, Green Pants & Green Utility Jacket

In this look, I’m wearing the same green Paige pants with a tan ATM tee. I love ATM tees because they’re SO high-quality that you’ll definitely wear them for more than one season. Over the tee, I have on a green utility jacket by Good American. It’s super lightweight, has an oversized fit. I could have left the jacket at home and only brought one jacket, though. If I had a do-over, I would have only packed the Veronica Beard cargo jacket and saved the space for another pair of pants or jeans.

Outfit #5) Rails Button-Down & Green Shorts

Is it any surprise that I packed my Rails white button-down shirt? I take it on every single trip I go on no matter what the destination because it’s THAT versatile. If you don’t already have a high-quality casual button-down for summer, this is what you’ve been looking for! I wear it with everything from shorts and jeans to skirts and swimsuits. In this look, I’m wearing it with the same green DL1961 shorts from Look #1, the Madewell sandals, my belt bag, and some gold jewelry.

Outfit #6) Vix Swimsuit with Rails Button-Down Shirt

I mentioned I wear the Rails button-down with swimsuits and this is what I mean…it makes the perfect coverup! The swimsuit I’m wearing is a sexy, strappy bikini by Vix. Vix is one of my go-to brands for chic and sexy swimsuits and I love the waxed rope and cutout details on this bikini. I wore this when I took Elizabeth to the pool one day.

Outfit #7) Green Tee, Pants & Cargo Jacket

Yep, these are the same green Paige pants! This time, I’m wearing them with a green ATM tee that’s the same style as the tan one, just in a different color. I love the monochrome look. But for a little added warmth and style, I threw on the tan Veronica beard jacket. I completed the look with the Rag & Bone hat, Banana Republic scarf, ba&sh belt, Sam Edelman boots, and some sunnies. See how important the layers are? I was able to take off the jacket to get cooler.

Outfit #8) Green Tee & Cargo Shorts

In this outfit, I’m wearing the same green tee and Veronica Beard cargo jacket… but this time, I’m wearing matching Veronica Beard cargo shorts! It’s hard to see the shorts in this picture but they’re good . I love the look of the shorts and jacket combined and it’s really easy to style casually with a tee. The shorts have the same chic cargo details as the jacket, a flattering A-line silhouette, cool contrasting stitching, a high waist, super lightweight material, and they’re comfortable!

Outfit #9) White Short-Sleeve Tee & Green Pants

Did I mention I love those ATM tees? 😉 This white v-neck is also by ATM and is my most-worn tee. I know it’s a little pricey for a T-shirt but it lasts more than one season, doesn’t yellow around the armpits, and washes and wears really well. I styled it with the same green pants, tan cargo jacket, and accessories.

Outfit #10) White Long-Sleeve Tee & Green Pants

If you liked the last look but want a little coverage, this white Nation LTD tee is one I’ve owned for years and is great for covering my chest and arms! I love the big billowy sleeves, smocked cuffs, and that it’s 100% cotton, so I stay cool. I could have styled this tee with any of the other bottoms I packed but I stuck with ol’ faithful…the green Paige pants. 😉

Outfit #11) White Button-Down Shirt & Green Joggers

In case you were getting tired of the Paige jogger pants…here’s a different pair of joggers! These are by James Perse and I’ve owned them for about two years. They’re SO comfortable, have an elastic waistband, are 100% cotton, and are the perfect length for me (I’m 5’4”). I styled them with my Rails button-shirt, tan cargo jacket, and combat boots. In hindsight, I wish I had scrapped these joggers and opted for a pair of jeans instead. But, the beautiful thing about this post…you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did! Remember only one jacket, and one pair of joggers or pants and one pair of jeans.

Outfit #12) White Top & Green Joggers

Next, I styled the same James Perse joggers with the white eyelet top from Look #1. I wore this while we were exploring Cape Town and I was not prepared for how cold it was there. I threw on my Patagonia vest, Veronica Beard jacket, and scarf for added warmth.

Outfit #13) Brown Cutout Dress

While we were in Cape Town, I wanted to feel a little more elevated instead of wearing my safari clothes so I went with this beautiful brown Indah dress. It has a v-neckline and cutouts at the waist that are very flattering, a long dramatic maxi length, and billowy sleeves. For a photoshoot at our lodge, I styled it alone with some gold jewelry. But in Cape Town, I wore my Veronica Beard jacket and zipped off the bottom to get that cropped length. I added my scarf for warmth, belt bag for convenience, and combat boots for comfort.

Outfit #14) Pink Cutout Dress

I mentioned in my tips above that I wish I had packed one long dress and one short dress. I wore this beautiful pink Simkhai cutout dress to shoot photos in but didn’t get a chance to wear it for anything else, which is why I’d recommend some sort of short cotton dress instead. BUT…I do love the dress and think it’s a great special occasion piece if you have an event or wedding coming up. You can throw on a shawl, jacket, or blazer for added coverage too. I styled it with most of the jewelry I packed for the trip to really add some oomph to the look.

Skincare & Makeup I Packed

Below I linked all of the skincare and makeup I packed for this trip. My biggest tip is to make sure you have travel sizes for everything. You could buy travel-size containers and transfer all of your product to them, but it’s much easier to buy the travel sizes if they’re available!

More About Our Trip

Every trip to Africa can be different depending on what you want to do, when you go, where you want to go, and what you want to see. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips so it’s important to do your research or even hire a travel agent to help you plan your perfect trip to Africa!

Here is a quick rundown of our trip for anyone who’s interested…

• We flew into Johannesburg and stayed at our airport hotel.
• Then we flew to Kasane and Chobe National Park in Botswana and stayed at The Sanctuary. They had 2-bedroom lodges perfect for our family and it was the closest to the park. We loved our guide, Chika!
• Then we flew from Kasane to Nxabera in Okavango Delta and landed on a dirt landing strip and our safari guides arrived early to ensure no animals were on the runway.
• We stayed at andBeyond , which ended up being our favorite place we stayed. They sang on our arrival and departure which was so sweet. The tents were connected by a passageway which made me feel comfortable. You don’t want your kids to be alone without easy access to you in these camps. And we loved our guides Richard and KB!
• Then we flew to Kasane and drove to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. We did a canopy tour, zip lining, a tour of the falls, and an elephant excursion where you could touch and feed wild elephants. We stayed at The Elephant Camp , which was very close to the fall and the activities we did.
• Then we flew to Cape Town. There we swam with sharks, went whale watching, had some fun dinners, and did a Table Mountain visit. We flew home from Cape Town.

Safari Camera Equipment

I also got quite a few questions about the camera I brought including what lens I used. If you are interested in shooting with a huge zoom lens, I would HIGHLY recommend renting the lens. I didn’t even think of that before I went and it would have saved a lot of money.  I bought this Canon lens that was quite pricey but it didn’t have nearly enough zoom – think paparazzi-like lens. This one would be amazing (and it’s $20,000!) Rent one!! OR…just get a really awesome point-and-shoot with incredible zoom. Honestly, that’s what my husband had and his pictures came out beautifully.

Hi Erin, The timing of this post is perfect for planning my trip to Namibia and Southern Africa in 6 weeks time.looks like you all had a fabulous trip and yes Cape Town can be very windy and cold. We have 10 days on Safari or in the bush in Namibia (Safari clothes) and 4 days in South Africa. Remaining 7 days are is in cities or travelling to and from JNB/Windhoek/Madikwe. I have a couple of questions for you. 1. Noticed the kids wore some light tan pants , same as the guides. How did that colour go re laundering? Was there any red dirt marks that wouldn’t come out? I have cargo joggers that colour…. 2. How chilly did it get (early morning/evening) in Botswana and how warm during the middle of the day, please? I’m trying to gauge if extra layers (light merino mid layers, cami undershirt) needed for evening and night drives vs middle of day clothes. Oh my gosh, Erin, I came upon this post at just the right time while searching for African safari fashion inspiration. I hit the jackpot here! Thank you! I’m 46, I feel like 26, and I like to think I look 36 (but that may just be a dream). Like you we have been planning our trip (to Tanzania and Zanzibar) for years and we’re finally heading there in July 2023. I’m insisting upon making every outfit count (cute and practical) but unfortunately we’re limited not to 40lbs but to only 33lbs per person, including any carry-ons, cameras, bags, etc. Fortunately, because my husband is like most other guys, he’ll only be needing about half of his weight allocation…I’ll make sure of that. :). Without having seen your packing list, it’s uncanny how much our lists already overlap…down to the Paige joggers, Golden Goose sneakers, R&B fedora hat, BR scarf, romper, green utility jacket, and more. I absolutely adore your Veronica Beard Cargo Jacket, but I’m guessing that will be a casualty of the weight restriction…but maybe not. Fingers crossed. I had also hoped to pack a long-sleeved utility jumpsuit, cargo leggings, linen safari dresses, and some cute lugged-soled canvas sneakers (in addition to my GG sneakers, and Frye combat boots…which I had already purchased before seeing your really cute Sam Edelman boots…. which leads me to my two questions. Did you find yourself wearing long-sleeves and long pants more often than shorts and short-sleeves (to ward off the sun and bugs)? My first-ever safari was a three-day budget camping safari in Kruger National Park run by a hostel. I shared a small 5x5 tent with a friend. Since then, I’ve taken over 150 safaris, running the gamut from bare-bones camping to luxury lodges. I’ve gone from being underprepared to being over-prepared to knowing what safari essentials you should pack no matter where you’re headed or what type of safari experience you’ve booked.

To double-check my checklist, I also reached out to Koen Pretorius, a local safari guide in South Africa, for his expert input on what travelers should pack for a safari. Although his company, Tsala Trails, focuses on luxury walking safaris, his packing suggestions apply to all types of safaris.

For the most part, the products on this list are all items I’ve used (or wish I had), have seen other people use, or were recommended by our expert guide, who reminds you to “prepare for the worst, but go with the flow and enjoy” once you arrive.

Packing Checklist for a Safari

Whether you’re heading out on a walking safari, staying in a basic tented camp, or checking into a luxury lodge, these are the items you’ll want to make sure make it into your bag.

The most important things you’ll pack for your safari aren’t clothing items, but your gear. I’ve included the essential items for most safaris here, but your exact needs will depend on your particular safari destination and the type of safari you’ll be embarking on (camping, walking, or luxury excursions will require different types of gear). Pretorius also says that no matter what type of safari you’re on, small travel towels can come in handy to clean your face from dirt, dust, sweat, or sunscreen. For anyone planning on using their phone to take pictures and videos, packing a portable power bank (like this fast-charging option ) will help make sure you don’t run out of juice and get you powered back up quickly so you don’t miss too many photo ops.

Best Camera

Nikon z50 mirrorless camera two lens kit.

For those who don’t want to rely on their smartphone, which can lose power, overheat, or glitch while on a safari, a handheld camera is a must. Pretorius suggests going for a mirrorless model. I agree and recommend the Nikon Z30 Mirrorless Camera with Two Lens Kit. Mirrorless cameras are much more lightweight than DSLRs and tend to have a faster shooting reaction speed that can make or break a wildlife shot. This Nikon Z50 has 20.9 megapixels, shoots 4K video, and comes with both a 16-50mm that’s good for portraits and a 50-250mm zoom lens that is perfect for wildlife safaris (and the maximum you’ll probably be able to shoot without the image becoming unstable). It can also shoot at a pushed 204800 ISO, which basically means it’s also great for night shots.

Best Binoculars

Zeiss 10x42 terra ed binoculars.

Binoculars are technically optional for a safari, but what’s the point of going on a bucket list trip experience and squinting to see the wildlife? That said, binoculars can be expensive, so you want to make sure to get the best bang for your buck. Pretorius suggests looking for binoculars with good quality lenses that are lightweight and durable with a strength of at least 8x32, 10x28, or 10x32. Our top pick are the Zeiss 10x42 Terra ED Binoculars, which are just over 1.5 pounds and compact. Zeiss glass is considered premium quality, and the 10x42 specs give you both a good depth of field and a steady view. Their weatherproof design keeps them working in temperatures ranging from 24-140 degrees, but they also have a waterproof body, so you don’t have to worry about ruining them if they get wet.

Best Sunscreen

Thinksport kid’s safe sunscreen spf 50+.

While many people remember to pack sunscreen for their safari, they often don’t think twice about how eco-friendly it will be since safaris are primarily a land-based activity. It’s still important to wear eco-friendly sunscreen like Thinksport since any residue will be washed off your body in the shower and eventually absorbed in the ground in the bush. I am a loyal Thinksport fan because their eco-friendly mineral sunscreens have broad-spectrum UV protection, don’t go on greasy (be sure to shake it before applying), and have a minimal white cast. The Kids’ formula is also non-toxic, biodegradable, unscented, and suitable for sensitive skin. Plus, it’s water-resistant and will last for 80 minutes.

Best Bug Spray

Off familycare smooth & dry aerosole personal repellents and bug spray.

Bug spray is available in most safari destinations, but the options may be limited. Bring your own to be safe. I recommend the Smooth and Dry version of Off! FamilyCare Insect & Mosquito Repellant. It comes in a convenient four-ounce size that is sure to last for your entire trip, but won’t take up unnecessary room in your day pack. This aerosol formula makes application effortless and even, and it dries without any sticky or greasy residue — there’s nothing worse than sitting in the heat and feeling like you have a coat of chemicals on you. It’s also unscented, which is ideal for heading into wildlife territory. The 15 percent DEET formulation covers a range of insects, from mosquitos to gnats and ticks. It can also safely be sprayed on clothes.

Best Travel Adapter

Vintar universal travel adaptor kit.

The Vintar Universal Travel Adaptor Kit is an essential buy that you can reuse for subsequent trips abroad. Not only is this adaptor beloved and well-priced, but it also stands out because it actually contains a plug adaptor configuration for South Africa. South Africa has a unique plug that is usually only available as its own clunky, pricey plug. I also love the streamlined design of this adaptor unit compared to other units and the fact that it has two two-prong plugs, two 5-volt USB-C ports, and one 5-volt USB-A port built right in.

Best Water Bottle

Brita stainless steel premium filtering water bottle.

While most lodges and safari companies will offer water bottles , Pretorius recommends bringing your own reusable water bottle to stay hydrated between game drives and walks, and during transfers and travel. I recommend the Brita Insulated Filtered Water Bottle because many lodges and camps in Africa use rainwater for drinking water, and while it is safe to drink, it may taste differently than you’re used to. This bottle has a replaceable carbon filter that helps to improve water taste and odor. It can also remove particulates in the water, but note that it is not a purifier. The stainless steel insulation will keep contents cool or warm for up to 24 hours, and the straw is ideal for taking sips inside a bumpy vehicle without spilling. One filter lasts up to two months or 40 gallons of water and replaces up to 300 plastic bottles of water.

Best First-aid Kit

Adventure medical kit ultralight watertight .5.

Any reputable safari operator or lodge will have a first-aid kit , but I still recommend packing this Adventure Medical Kit for peace of mind. It has all your essential medical needs covered, including an assortment of bandages and wound dressings, single doses of various generic pain and allergy medications, a splinter remover that can also remove ticks, and a collection of blister covers. Everything comes in a compact, double-layer waterproof bag that will easily fit into your day pack without taking up too much room. I particularly like having this on hand because it offers a quick way to deal with minor ailments on your own, using products you’re familiar with, and doesn’t require you to hunt down the lodge manager or interrupt the safari.

Best Luggage and Accessories

Your exact accessories and luggage needs will again vary depending on your specific trip, but I’ve compiled a basic list of items that function as universal needs. Regarding walking tours, Pretorius says a walking stick is a great addition, but only if you know you’ll use it. On the flip side, he says you’ll definitely want to pack a pair of ankle gaiters to strap onto your shoes to protect your lower legs and ankles from dirt, mud, debris, and errant branches or rocks.

Best Suitcase

Osprey sojourn shuttle bag 30 inch.

This eco-friendly, water-resistant wheeled duffel from Osprey ticks so many boxes, even ones you didn’t know you needed. On a basic level, it has a 108-liter capacity, several interior zippered organization pockets, a retractable handle, and is constructed with tough Bluesign-approved nylon. But the beauty of this bag is in the details. The duffel’s compression straps allow the bag to conform and snugly hold several different capacity levels — meaning you can pack it partially full, leaving room for souvenirs. Exterior storage includes a waterproof shoe compartment (key for muddy or dusty after-safari shoes) and a top easy-access compartment for toiletry bags or dirty clothes. It also has an extra-wide wheelbase and oversized 110mm wheels that maneuver beautifully over multiple surfaces, including rough terrain.

Best Day Pack

Deuter speed lite 21 pack.

Day packs are necessary for keeping your essentials with you while out on game drives or bush walks. These sunglasses are made from a strong but lightweight polycarbonate material and have comfortable nose cushions for those long outings. In particular, the polarized lenses are FDA-approved for their excellent impact resistance. They’re only available in one color and one size, but luckily it’s black and a size with a near-universal fit. These sunnies are also affordably priced, so you can leave your expensive sunglasses at home.

Best Sunglasses for Women

These classically shaped square sunglasses offer 100 percent UV protection and the benefits of polarized lenses, plus a little extra that makes them a great safari pick. They have a proprietary ChromaPop component that enhances the view by further reducing glare and filtering out certain light wavelengths, resulting in superior clarity and natural color matching. Plus, they come in three color options, so you can find the pair that’s perfect for your look. Polymer materials makes them durable, and anti-slip nose cushions help keep them comfortable (and on your face during those windy game drives). They are an investment, however, so you might want to pick up a hard sided glasses case for storage.

Pretorius says to stick with a brimmed hat since it will help keep your neck and shoulders protected from the sun, and he recommends investing in a hat from Tilly, the brand he himself uses. I like their LTM6 Airflo Sun Hat because it has the second-widest brim in the collection, comes in safari-friendly colors, and is made of Bluesign recycled materials. Where it shines, though, is its UPF 50+ sun protection rating and cooling mesh band around the crown that allows air to flow through (somehow while staying water-repelling). I love that it packs down flat and has the all-too-important adjustable wind strap, so it will stay in place in windy conditions. Oh, and Tilly guarantees all their hats for life.

Best Travel Pill Organizer

Use this travel pill organizer to pack your daily anti-malarial meds, regular prescriptions and supplements, or to ensure you have a stash of your trusted over-the-counter allergy or pain medicines. What I love about this seven-day pill organizer is that each day’s container can be removed separately and easily slipped into your pocket or day pack, giving you access to your daily dosage without having to cart around the entire case. Plus, the containers have a large capacity that can fit several larger-sized pills, and each day is a different color, a boon for visual folks like me. You’ll also get a water-resistant case with an easy-grab handle, and an interior pocket where you can store printed copies of your prescriptions (especially essential for any controlled prescriptions).

Best Shoes and Apparel

When it comes to clothing, Pretorius suggests leaning into performance tech items that are lightweight, breathable, and offer sun and water protection when possible. He says that waterproof pants and a waterproof jacket are “game-changers” during the rainy season since they fold up small and can make or break your experience in cold and rainy weather. For winter safaris, he warns that it can get cold and recommends packing a warming beanie and a pair of insulated gloves . These can also come in handy for early morning or nighttime game drives or walks during the shoulder season. The biggest tip is to pack layers, as temperatures can fluctuate from day to night and even throughout the day.

Best Sun Shirt

Whether you’re walking or in a vehicle, be sure to pack at least one top that has UPF protection. UPF protection is like built-in sunscreen and the UPF number refers to the percentage of UV rays the fabric blocks. According to Pretorius, you should aim for easy-to-care-for materials such as polyester, cotton, or blends. Uniqlo’s recycled polyester-spandex Airism Mesh UV Protection Full Zip Hoodie provides a removable full-coverage layer that’s lightweight and breathable enough to wear in high temps without overheating. I love that it has hand pockets and thumbholes, too, so you can protect your hands as well. It also packs down into its own pocket, making it a cinch to toss into your day pack.

Best Insulating Layer

An insulating layer is a must for keeping you cozy during morning or night walks, chilly nights in a tent , or during early or evening game drives. It’s amazing how quickly it can go from warm to chilly (or even freezing) when you’re zooming through the park in an open-air vehicle. I never got in the vehicle without my Patagonia fleece, a men’s version hand-me-down from a ranger friend after I failed to pack my own. I like this style in particular because it has a contoured cut that is easy to layer and features a full zipper that doesn’t require you to pull it over your head. The zippered hand pockets and sleeve stash pocket are also key for keeping items secure during bumpy rides or long hikes (they also help keep out sneaky bugs). Plus, it’s made from recycled material and is Fair Trade-certified.

Best Waterproof Pants

Waterproof and rainproof pants are essential for Safaris. Pretorius notes that they can help to keep your safari experience comfortable and pleasant in cold or inclement weather. These REI Co-op Sahara Convertible Pants ( also available for men ) are made from recycled polyester, spandex, and nylon, and have a special water-repellent coating that causes water to bead on contact. The cargo-style design includes six storage pockets to securely carry any essentials, and the drawstring elastic waist allows you to customize the fit for maximum comfort. The pants are lightweight and breathable but also feature vertical ankle zippers for extra airflow — or you can simply zip off the lower portion of the pants below the knee to convert them into shorts.

Best Walking Shoes

A durable and comfortable pair of sneakers is a must, even if you’re spending the majority of your time in a vehicle (you’ll likely have the chance to get out of the vehicle a few times to walk around or do a short bush walk). Heading out on a walking safari or staying in a ground-level tented camp? They’re a necessity. These Merrell Moab 3 Mid all-terrain boots get the job done by providing a supportive but comfortable fit with contoured footbeds, excellent shock absorption, high-traction soles, and outer heel and toe protection.

They’re also waterproof, which comes in handy for water crossings or downpours, and this mid-rise version has extra ankle support — highly recommended by Pretorius — for uneven ground and tiring trails. Several neutral colorways also mean you can pick the right combo for you while still blending into the bush.

Best Sandals

Teva women's original universal sandals.

Pretorius recommends packing a pair of sandals . While he is comfortable wearing flip-flops, I prefer a sturdier sandal like the Teva Original Universal. It’s a bit more rugged, with stabilizing traction in the sole and an adjustable heel strap to prevent them from sliding off. These sandals are also top-notch performers in wet conditions and have a molded sole with heel cushioning and arch support for long-wear comfort. Fitting with the theme of most of the items on this list, they are also made from recycled materials. Another bonus? They have an accessible price point, and there are a whopping 43 colors and patterns to choose from in women’s sizes and over 50 options in men’s sizes .

What to Know Before You Go on Safari

Avoid camouflage clothing.

If you’re visiting countries like Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, and Uganda (to name a few), you’ll need to avoid packing anything with a camouflage design. In these countries, it is illegal for anyone outside of official law and military personnel to wear camouflage.

Consult your doctor about anti-malarial medications

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes. It is present in some safari destinations, but not all. For example, all game reserves in South Africa's Eastern Cape are in malaria-free zones, but malaria is still a risk in other provinces, including Mpumalanga, which is home to Kruger National Park. Likewise, popular safari countries like Tanzania and Kenya are high-risk malaria zones.

Get in touch with your doctor or local travel clinic several months before your trip to discuss antimalarial options, as some medicines require you to start taking them several weeks before you arrive — and/or several weeks after. It’s also a good idea to ask if your destination requires any vaccinations for entry. Many countries require proof of a yellow fever vaccination, while Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, typhoid, cholera, and MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccinations are recommended prior to travel.

Prepare for the weather

Within the four global seasons of summer, spring, fall, and winter, you should pay attention to whether your visit coincides with the wet or dry season. In South Africa, the dry season is roughly between May and September, and the wet season is October through April with rains starting in November, Pretorius says.

“There is essentially no rain during the winter months,” he adds, which can make “spotting wildlife easier as the vegetation is less dense and the animals tend to stay around permanent water sources. Summer months are hot and humid, and storms can occur frequently, but rarely last very long. Rainy season means the return of migratory birds, and numerous antelope species also give birth during this time of year.”

Keep in mind, the majority of safari destinations are located below the equator in the southern hemisphere. Pretorius is quick to remind safari-goers that the winter and summer seasons occur at opposite times compared to locations above the equator. If you book a safari in most destinations during the months of June, July, and August, you’ll be hitting winter, not summer, and vice versa.

Everyone’s safari needs will differ, but check with your safari provider about what types of items will be available for free or to rent onsite so you don’t pack unnecessary items. For example, many providers offer simple ponchos during the rainy season but rarely offer waterproof pants. Focusing on the necessities will help keep your costs down, luggage lighter, and avoid product waste. Plus, you’ll have more room for souvenirs!

Additionally, avoid single-use and plastic products and instead try to stick to eco-friendly options when possible. Many lodges and camps operate with eco-friendly practices, and following suit during a safari is one way to be respectful of the natural areas, people, and wildlife you’ve come to see. Thin, plastic bags have also been banned in countries like Uganda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Kenya, making eco-friendly materials a must.

A soft-sided rolling duffel is the best luggage to bring on safari, particularly if part of your travels include a smaller airline or will take place on a smaller plane. Many smaller aircrafts and smaller airlines in African countries require soft-sided luggage. The last thing you’ll want to do after a long flight is purchase a new piece of luggage and repack before being let onto your intra-country flight. Since size, weight, shape, and luggage types can vary vastly between airlines, it’s a good idea to do research beforehand to make sure your luggage meets all restrictions.

Pretorius says to avoid “anything red, orange, yellow, fluorescent, and even white” since predators often associate these colors with prey. You want to blend in as much as possible with your surroundings, which is why natural, neutral-colors are best for safaris. This is even more important for walking safaris or camping as you’ll actually be on the ground. "Think earthy tones, like khaki, brown, beige, and even navy blue” when choosing your safari packing palette, Pretorius adds.

If you’re in a self-contained lodge, you can wear pretty much whatever you’d like while on the property. Just be sure to dress for the weather and remember that even luxury safari lodges have a fairly casual vibe (a.k.a you won’t need any formal or business attire).

When in doubt, opt for lightweight clothing that offers protection from the elements and environment — breathable, water-resistant/waterproof, and UPF fabrics in layers.

Dennis Mwanja's charges were no match to the highly skilled and intelligent Chinese outfit who outscored them by four tries to one in an entertaining duel.

The Asian outfit took command early to land the opening try courtesy of  Chen Keyi with Gu Yaoyao slotting home the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Kenya regrouped and after some neat interplay between the two Japanese-based players Grace Adhambo and Janet Okello, the latter scored a centre post try which Adhiambo converted to level the match at 7-7.

From the resultant kickoff, China regained possession and went through several phases of play that saw Keyi scoring a second try for a 12-7 lead at the interval.

On resumption, China stepped up a gear, denying the Lionesses territory and possession to seal the win with tries by Sun Yue and Yaoyao to close out the match and send the Asian to the Paris Olympics.

In Paris, they will join New Zealand, Australia, USA, hosts France, Great Britain, Canada, Japan, South Africa, Fiji and Japan.

The Lionesses defeated the Czech Republic 12-10 in the semifinals and eliminated Argentina 15-12 in the quarter-finals.
