It’s one of the most curious places to visit in Nevada since the stories and ideas surrounding this facility are super intriguing. Even though the airbase was built back in 1955, it is still a popular tourist destination enmeshed in mystery.

Las Vegas – Area 51 tour reviews

We took the Area 51 tour from Las Vegas and found it to be a one-of-a-kind experience during our time here. The different tour stops were quite interesting, and one of the highlights was listening to the stories and theories surrounding these places.

I didn’t realize that the McCarran Airport was home to a “secret” airline, and I learned a lot about the Area 51 culture. Whether you believe in aliens or not, I think the tour is one of the most entertaining things to do outside of Vegas!

Area 51, area 51 trip extraterrestrial highway

Some of the locations were a bit creepy, especially when you hear about the conspiracies about them. I had the most fun visiting the Little A’le’Inn because the owners were very kind and impressive in their attention to detail. It was the perfect lunch spot for this Area 51 day tour !

Overall, it was an exciting and informative day, and I appreciated that our tour guide took us to places that we wouldn’t have known about otherwise. If you’re thinking about exploring this area, I recommend this tour. It included everything we needed, and the bus can even pick you up from your Vegas hotel.

During your Area 51 tour in Nevada , you’ll explore several well-known sites and a few hidden gems. This map will show you where each tour stop is located.

Area 51 Museum Las Vegas

If you’re staying in the city but don’t want to take an  Area 51 tour in Las Vegas , I have another option for you. The  National Atomic Testing Museum has an Area 51 exhibit and all kinds of propaganda and artifacts from the Nevada Test Site (NTS).

The National Atomic Testing Museum is the only official atomic museum in the country. Its collection of interactive gadgets, displays, and short films is a great way to learn more about the NTS, which performed over 900 nuclear tests just 65 miles from Vegas back in the 1950s.

Area 51, area 51 day tour national atomic testing museum

In 2012, the museum added an Area 51 exhibit complete with alien vision goggles, newspaper clippings about UFO sightings, and much more. If you’re interested in learning more about local alien conspiracies and actual research on UFOs and extraterrestrial encounters, visiting the museum is one way to do a cheap Area 51 tour from Las Vegas .

The museum is about a mile from the Strip, on Flamingo Road, and is open Thursday-Tuesday from 9:30 am-3:30 pm. General admission to the museum costs $22, and the Area 51 exhibit costs $6.

FAQs – Area 51 Tours

Before you book your Area 51 day trip , read through these commonly asked questions.

What is Area 51?

Area 51 is a U.S. Air Force base and is said to be the site of alien experiments and other extraterrestrial objects.

Where is Area 51?

Area 51 is located on the Nevada Test and Training Range, and it’s about 83 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Is Area 51 real?

The Air Force base is a real facility, but what goes on inside is not made public. So, any alien and UFO theories about Area 51 are just that – theories.

Can you visit the real Area 51?

The gated perimeter around the facility is the closest you can get to the real Area 51 airbase. There are security cameras and other systems in place, so you can’t go any further without breaking the law!

How far is Area 51 from Las Vegas?

Area 51 is a little over 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

How to get to Area 51 from Las Vegas?

To get to Area 51’s front gate, take I-515 N/US-95 N to I-15 N/US-93 N. Continue to the Alien Research Center and turn left onto Mailbox Road, which becomes Groom Road. Follow it to the front gate. It’s in the middle of the desert, so if you’d rather go as a group or with a guide, I recommend a Las Vegas Area 51 tour .

How much does an Area 51 tour cost?

The Area 51 tour that I recommend and that we took costs $205/person.

Can you visit Area 51 without a tour?

Yes, you can go there without a guide, but I recommend taking an Area 51 day tour , especially since you need to take some desert backroads to get there. Plus, the tour will take you to other related locations that you might not know about.

I hope you enjoyed learning more about this creepy and mysterious place! An Area 51 tour is a great thing to do if you have some free time and want to explore a quirkier side of the Nevada desert. Again, the Area 51 trip that we took is the best full-day tour , and it includes your lunch, transportation, and tour guide.

Of course, if you have any questions about taking an Area 51 tour from Las Vegas , leave me a comment so I can get back to you! Have a safe trip to Area 51!

51Trips: Transforming Adventures into Timeless Memories

First and foremost, the concept behind 51Trips is simply fantastic! It's like bringing back the good ol' days of flipping through photo albums, but with a modern twist. I recently completed a trip and was able to turn my memories into a lovely Trip Book. The 51Trips app was easy to use, significantly streamlining the process of cataloging my trips. The quality of the book is amazing. The photos came out crystal clear and vibrant, and the paper used in the book is just so pleasing to the touch. My Trip Book was also a great way for me to share my travel adventures with my friends and family. All in all, I’d recommend 51Trips to fellow travelers. It's a wonderful tool for transforming those precious photo memories into a beautifully curated book, preserving the magic of your journey for years to come.

Las vegas area 51 tour.

This amazing day starts with a stop and viewing of the top secret Janet Airlines, the airline that doesn’t exist! Based at Las Vegas International Airport, this fleet of unmarked jets has been hiding in plain site for decades. It transport many hundreds of workers daily, to and from the infamous and supposedly closed and abandoned “Area 51.”

The route to Area 51 is through some of the most desolate, uninhabited and incredibly scenic desert in the world. After an amazing journey through a stunning Joshua Tree Forest we arrive on the edge of an ancient mysterious dry lake where UFO sightings often occur. After another beautiful drive along the “Extraterrestrial Highway” we arrive at the famous Little A’le’ Inn. This location has been host to numerous documentaries and movies including “Independence Day.” Here you will find a wealth of information and souvenirs on this top-secret area.

Area-51-Alien-Petroglyphs

Captain Chuck Clark, an ex-air force captain, has written an amazingly interesting and in depth report on Area 51, which is also available for purchase. After a very tasty Alien Burger at the Little A’le’ Inn we journey to the infamous Black Mailbox location, (the mailbox was recently abducted), a sacred meeting place for UFO enthusiasts. We then arrive at the absolute perimeter of Area 51 through a strange and mutant Joshua Tree forest where the guards (The Men In Black) with their high powered weapons, forever stand watch along with detection devices, listening devices and cameras mounted among the cactus. The signs read, “Top Secret Military Facility, Keep Out, Use of Deadly force Authorized” we’re confident they mean it. You can wave at the heavily armed guards in the 4×4 parked on the desert hillside but they never wave back. They just wait and watch from behind their darkened windows. It’s very spooky.

As much as the United States government denied the existence of this base for decades, we now know it is there but no one knows what they do there. This is an Extreme Tour to the world’s most top secret military facility, the real home of the X files, AREA 51.

All of the prize elements set forth in this Section 5 shall collectively be referred to herein as the “Grand Prize.” Total ARV of the Grand Prize is Four Thousand Nine Hundred Dollars ($4,900.00). Travel restrictions, conditions and limitations may apply.

The Grand Prize is non-transferable. No substitutions or cash redemptions unless directed by Sponsor. In the case of unavailability of any prize, Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value. All taxes and unspecified expenses are the responsibility of the Grand Prize Winner.

6. WINNER VERIFICATION AND PRIZE CONDITIONS: Before a Potential Winner can be deemed a Grand Prize Winner, he/she/they may be required to sign and return a background check consent form, prize verification form, a publicity release (except where prohibited) and any other legal documents that Sponsor may require, including IRS Form W-9 (collectively, “Prize Verification Forms”), within five (5) business days from the date Sponsor sends the Prize Verification Forms to the Potential Winner, or the Potential Winner will be subject to disqualification. If a background check is required of the Potential Winner, the background check must be reviewed and approved by Sponsor, in its sole discretion, before the Potential Winner is deemed a Grand Prize Winner. If Potential Winner chooses not to accept the Grand Prize, or is unable to be notified, an alternate Potential Winner will be randomly selected from all of the remaining Entries. If Sponsor is unable to award a Grand Prize after three (3) attempts, the Grand Prize will not be awarded. Grand Prize Winner may not substitute, assign or transfer any Grand Prize or redeem any non-monetary prize in lieu of his/her/their Grand Prize. Any difference between the ARV and the actual value of the Grand Prize, if any, will not be awarded. Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to substitute the Grand Prize (or Grand Prize component, if applicable) with one of equal or greater value. Sponsor is responsible only for delivery of the Grand Prize and is not responsible for Grand Prize utility or otherwise. All fees, federal, provincial, state, local taxes (including, without limitation, income and withholding taxes) or other costs and expenses relating to the Sweepstakes and the Grand Prize (including the value of travel, accommodations, meals, and other non-cash items provided to the Grand Prize Winner) are the sole responsibility of the Grand Prize Winner.

Travel restrictions, conditions and limitations may apply. Guest must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of Grand Prize Winner’s entry. ARV of Grand Prize may vary depending on point of departure, travel dates and fare/rate fluctuations. The Trip Package must take place on the dates specified by Sponsor. Grand Prize Winner and Guest must be able to travel on dates to be determined by Sponsor. Exact travel dates to be determined at Sponsor’s sole discretion.

The Trip Package is subject to certain restrictions. All meals, ground transportation and incidentals not described herein and incurred by the Grand Prize Winner and Guest will be the sole responsibility of the Grand Prize Winner and Guest. If Grand Prize Winner resides within a one hundred (100) mile radius of Las Vegas, NV (a “local resident”), in lieu of the round-trip domestic coach air transportation portion of the Trip Package, Grand Prize Winner will receive a travel stipend in the amount of Three Hundred Dollars ($300.00) to cover travel for Grand Prize Winner and Guest. No additional compensation will be awarded in lieu of the difference in the ARV for the Grand Prize for a local resident and the ARV for the Grand Prize for the Grand Prize Winner who is not a local resident.

Grand Prize Winner and Guest must possess United States government-approved travel documents prior to awarding of the Grand Prize. Grand Prize Winner and Guest must be willing to sign any other legal documents required by Sponsor and travel on the same itinerary. Grand Prize Winner’s Guest may be subject to background screening and approval, at Sponsor’s sole discretion, prior to travel. Exact travel times and arrangements are subject to availability and blackout periods. The Sweepstakes Entities are not responsible for any cancellations, delays, diversions or substitutions, or any act or omission whatsoever with respect to the Trip Package. Except as indicated in the Trip Package, all meals, taxes, gratuities, travel insurance, bag check fees, parking fees, laundry service, food, alcoholic beverages, incidentals (including mini-bar), phone charges, merchandise, souvenirs and other expenses not specifically identified in these Official Rules are solely the responsibility of the Grand Prize Winner and Guest. Grand Prize Winner and Guest must comply with all hotel check-in requirements, including, but not limited to, the presentation of a major credit card. Trip Package is non-transferable and may not be given, bartered, substituted, sold, or exchanged for cash or another Grand Prize. Unused components of the Trip Package have no redeemable cash value. All airline tickets issued in connection with the Trip Package are not eligible for frequent flyer miles. Airline tickets cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotion or offer.

If Grand Prize Winner elects to travel or partake in the Trip Package without his/her/their Guest, no additional compensation will be awarded. If Grand Prize Winner elects to travel or partake in the Trip Package with people in addition to the Guest (if allowed), such additional guest(s) shall be responsible for any and all costs associated with such travel and/or the Trip Package. Such additional guest(s) may be subject to background check and approval, in Sponsor’s sole discretion, and must be willing to sign any legal documents required of other Trip Package participants. Air transportation and hotel accommodations must be taken together and cannot be taken separately. No changes will be made to travel details once any element(s) of the travel arrangements have been booked, except at Sponsor’s sole discretion. All airline tickets issued in conjunction with the Trip Package are not eligible for upgrades. Lost or stolen tickets, travel vouchers or certificates or similar items, once they are in Grand Prize Winner’s possession, will not be replaced. Travel is subject to capacity controls, availability, blackout dates and certain other restrictions, all of which are subject to change. Travel must be roundtrip. No stopovers are permitted on tickets issued as the Trip Package. If a stopover occurs, the Trip Package will terminate and Grand Prize Winner and/or his/her/their Guest will be responsible for the full fare which will be charged from the stopover point for the remaining trip segment(s), including the return. Airline, airport(s), and flight itinerary will be determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion. Any unclaimed and/or unused Trip Package or element thereof will be forfeited by and will remain the property of Sponsor. No refund or compensation will be made in the event of the cancellation or delay of any flight. Travel is subject to the terms and conditions set forth in these Official Rules and those set forth by Sponsor’s air travel prize supplier, as detailed in the passenger ticket contract issued by such supplier. In the event Grand Prize Winner and/or his/her/their Guest engage in behavior that (as determined by Sponsor and/or Administrator in their sole discretion) is obnoxious, threatening, illegal, reflects poorly on Sponsor or other Sweepstakes Entities, or that is intended to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person, Sponsor reserves the right to terminate the trip or other applicable experience early, in whole or in part, and send Grand Prize Winner and/or his/her/their Guest home with no further compensation.

7. By participating in the Sweepstakes, Entrants hereby agree to Sponsor’s collection and usage of their personal information and acknowledge that they have read and accepted Sponsor’s privacy policy.

Receipt of any of the Grand Prize components of the Sweepstakes is conditioned upon compliance with any and all applicable federal, state and local laws, rules, and regulations. Sponsor reserves the right to correct clerical or typographical errors in any promotional materials. Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to modify, cancel, terminate, extend or suspend the Sweepstakes and to hold a random drawing from among all eligible, non-suspect Entries received prior to and/or after (if appropriate) such action, for any reason in its sole discretion, including without limitation if any computer virus, bug, tampering, technical failure, unauthorized human intervention or any other cause outside of Released Parties’ control corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Sweepstakes. In the event of any such modification, cancellation, termination or suspension, a notice of such action will be posted on the Website, if functioning. In the event that Sponsor receives, in its sole discretion, an insufficient number of Entries, Sponsor reserves the right to extend the Sweepstakes Period or terminate or modify the Sweepstakes. Sponsor’s failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.

8. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY AND GOVERNING LAW : To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the Released Parties are not responsible for any claims, damages, expenses, costs or losses to any person (including death) or property of any kind resulting from, arising from, or in connection with, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from: (a) any typographical or other error in the printing or publishing of these Official Rules, offering or announcement of any Grand Prize; (b) late, lost, stolen, damaged, garbled, incomplete, misaddressed, postage due or misdirected Entries, e-mails or other communications; (c) errors, omissions, interruptions, deletions, defects or delays in operations or transmission of information, in each case whether arising by way of technical or other failures or malfunctions of computer hardware, software, communications devices, transmission lines, websites, applications or data networks; (d) data corruption, theft, destruction, loss, unauthorized access to or alteration of entry materials; (e) electronic communications that are undeliverable as a result of any form of active or passive filtering of any kind or insufficient space in Entrant’s e-mail account; or (f) any problems or technical, hardware or software malfunctions of any network or means of transmission, failed, incorrect, inaccurate, incomplete, garbled or delayed electronic communications whether caused by the sender or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Sweepstakes, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, applications, failure of any e-mail or Entries to be received by the Sponsor due to technical problems, human error or traffic congestion, unavailable network connections on the Internet or any website, or any combination thereof, including, without limitation, any injury or damage to Entrant’s or any other person’s computer relating to or resulting from participating in the Sweepstakes or downloading any materials associated with the Sweepstakes. Grand Prize Winner hereby acknowledges that the Sweepstakes Entities have neither made nor are in any manner responsible or liable for any express or implied warranty, representation or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, relative to the Grand Prize or any component thereof. Grand Prize Winner and Grand Prize Winners’ Guest assumes all liability for any injury or damage caused, or claimed to be caused, by participating in this Sweepstakes or use or redemption of the Grand Prize.

In addition, Released Parties shall not be responsible for any cancellations, delays, diversions or substitutions or any acts or omissions whatsoever by any performer(s)/event(s), air carrier(s), hotel(s), transportation companies or any other persons providing any of these services, accommodations or other Trip Package components to passengers, including any results thereof, such as changes in services or accommodations necessitated by same. Service was great, drinks are reasonably priced, I tried the seltzer, it was a bit on the sweeter side maybe should've asked for less syrup. Ambiance was nice. Dogs are allowed. It was a little warm inside in the afternoon, wish some windows opened.

Our drinks

My wife and I stopped to check out this new brewery in Ft. Bragg, while staying in Mendocino. I'm glad we did. They have a nice selection of interesting original beers. They also offer food from local bakeries and restaurants. We didn't eat. But saw some tasty looking hot baked pretzels go by! The service was friendly and helpful. The space is very large with lots of big windows out to the street. They have a lot of seating, including two very nice couches. Although there are a lot of seats the space is not crowded at all. They also have two dart boards and other games to help pass the time while enjoying their tasty beers.

This place is awesome! It's a great spot to visit, especially since it's open later than most places in the area. The taproom offers a fun atmosphere with games, live music, and food on select nights. Plus, it's dog and kid friendly indoors, which is a big plus. However, the only downside is that the staff might be too accommodating to their guests. On the night I visited, there were a handful of young rambunctious children running around and even doing cartwheels in the establishment while their parents sat comfortably with their drinks. While it's great to see a family-friendly environment, it might be nice to have some boundaries in place to ensure everyone's comfort and safety.

Great atmosphere! Felt super chill and relaxing. Nice staff and good food. Minus one star because there was no cheese sauce for the pretzels! That is essential when offering soft pretzels.

Awesome local spot with great beer! Chill vibes and a great place to relax with friends.

Tall Guys Brewing Company is a new and welcome addition to the community. They have helped the Franklin Street revitalization by remaking our famous Sears building into something truly warm, fun and filled with great beers. I went for an impromptu meeting to talk about outside help for a work project and ended up meeting other friends. It is in a good spot for tourist foot traffic and is well frequented by locals. The best part for me is the great windows where you can people watch who look back longingly wishing they too could be inside.

While camping with friends at MacKerricher, we came by tall guy brewing on a Saturday afternoon. I enjoyed that they were dog friendly, and the large open space allowed for us to find a spot and sprawl out. They offered a nice variety of beers, and even some seltzers. There was a food truck outside but we did not partake. A decent spot to hang out and grab a beer if you find yourself in the area.

We need it a place like that for everyone in the community , 100% agree!!!!! Great place to go and enjoy a fresh beer and listening to music, watch sports or play darts .. Friendly and warm environment with great service !!!

Made our yearly trip from Los Angeles and were pleasantly surprised to see a new brewery in town. They had only been open about a week when we stopped by. I love Belgium and light, crisp beer. Their Wit is definitely one of my top favorites, and I've been to over 100 breweries. If you're in town, this is a must stop spot! Grab a flight and try them all! The location has a lot of space and is really nice. Bathrooms are clean. They allow outside food but do sell pretzels, pigs in a blanket, and chips. Did not try but looked good! The service was friendly and allowed you to get spashes to try the beer, which is always a plus when going to a new brewery. They also have seltzer for non-beer drinkers.

7 Scenic Canyon Road Trips To Add To Your Arizona Bucket List

  • There are many scenic road trips in Arizona to canyons, like Marble and Sycamore, as well as the Grand Canyon.
  • Flagstaff to Marble Canyon boasts ancestral sites, natural springs, and limestone gorge views.
  • Tucson to Sabino Canyon leads to lush desert landscapes, ideal for hiking and tram tours.

The United States, with its wide array of landscapes and historical monuments, provides an ideal backdrop for land travel in any direction, whether aboard a tiny vehicle or a luxurious RV. There are exciting Texas day trips only three hours from Dallas , for instance; iconic landmarks along the various sections of Route 66 ; or simply charming small towns in the Hudson Valley to explore .

However, the Grand Canyon State is particularly a traveler's favorite; in fact, 40.19 million people visited Arizona in 2022 , perhaps drawn by some of the most iconic landmarks in the USA, including the Grand Canyon, commonly said to be the top tourist attraction in the United States .

While this natural wonder gets most of the attention, there are actually a number of other canyons in Arizona in addition to the Grand Canyon , and what better way to explore them (as well as many of the state's other noteworthy landscapes, towns, and cities) on a road trip?

There's already a myriad of Arizona road trips to the Grand Canyon , but this list will expand on those, including scenic drives to its South Rim as well as other canyons in the state. The following Arizona canyon road trips also take adventurers through picturesque and interesting stops on their way to majestic canyons like Marble, Sabino, and the Grand Canyon's South Rim.

What To Know Before Visiting The Three Indian Canyons Of Palm Springs

Flagstaff to marble canyon, 130 miles via wupatki national monument and antelope pass.

The spring weather in Flagstaff is ideal for outdoor activities , although it's great to visit year-round, given its proximity to many natural wonders, such as the Wupatki National Monument , which is only 36 minutes away and features many ancestral Puebloan sites, three natural springs, ripple-marked sandstone, several blow holes, and evergreen trees like the One-seed Juniper and Mormon Tea.

The next photo stop after heading northwest is Antelope Pass Vista , a viewpoint of canyons and red rock formations at 6151 feet, via the hills and narrow curves of State Route 89A, just outside Bitter Springs.

As for the ultimate destination, Marble Canyon , it sits at 3,573 feet and is partially located within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the Grand Canyon National Park. This impressive, free-access gorge features limestone rocks and cliff walls perched above the Colorado River, and it attracts whitewater rafters, trout-fishing lovers, picnickers, and photographers alike, especially in the early morning and at sunset.

  • Total Drive Time: 2 hours 8 minutes
  • Great Attractions and Stops: Wupatki National Monument (sunrise to sunset; from $15 ); Glen Canyon National Recreation Area ($15/person); Marble Canyon Lodge (rooms from $170)
  • Easy Trail: Old Navajo Bridge (0.5 mile; 10 minutes)

Tucson To Sabino Canyon

51.9 miles via gates pass.

Once visitors are done with the city of Tucson’s unique activities and attractions , like the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun Museum, it’s time to explore the area’s natural marvel: the 20,000-acre Tucson Mountain Park , which is popular for hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, rifle shooting, horseback riding, bird watching, and archery hunting. For the best panoramic desert and mountain views around, one must head to the Gates Pass Scenic Overlook, named after Thomas Gates, a pioneer and rancher.

From there, it will take an hour and 15 minutes to reach Sabino Canyon Recreation Area , located in the Santa Catalina Mountains and the Coronado National Forest and which can be explored on the emission-free, English and Spanish-narrated, and open-air Sabino Canyon Crawler tram. Death toll at Hajj pilgrimage rises to 1,300 amid extreme high temperatures

Updated on: June 23, 2024 / 7:42 PM EDT / AP

More than 1,300 people died during this year's Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia as the faithful faced extreme high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert kingdom, Saudi authorities announced Sunday.

Saudi Health Minister Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel said that 83% of the 1,301 fatalities were unauthorized pilgrims who walked long distances in soaring temperatures to perform the Hajj rituals in and around the holy city of Mecca.

Speaking to state-owned television, the minister said 95 pilgrims were being treated in hospitals, some of whom were airlifted for treatment in the capital, Riyadh. He said the identification process was delayed because there were no identification documents with many of the dead pilgrims.

The fatalities included more than 660 Egyptians. All but 31 of them were unauthorized pilgrims, according to two officials in Cairo. Egypt has revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies that helped unauthorized pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia, authorities said.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief journalists, said most of the dead were reported at the Emergency Complex in Mecca's Al-Muaisem neighborhood. Egypt sent more than 50,000 authorized pilgrims to Saudi Arabia this year.

Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca

Saudi authorities cracked down on unauthorized pilgrims, expelling tens of thousands of people. But many, mostly Egyptians, managed to reach holy sites in and around Mecca, some on foot. Unlike authorized pilgrims, they had no hotels to return to to escape the scorching heat.

In a statement Saturday, Egypt's government said the 16 travel agencies failed to provide adequate services for pilgrims. It said these agencies illegally facilitated the travel of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia using visas that don't allow holders to travel to Mecca.

The government also said officials from the companies have been referred to the public prosecutor for investigation.

According to the state-owned Al-Ahram daily, some travel agencies and Hajj trip operators sold Saudi tourist visas to Egyptian Hajj hopefuls, violating Saudi regulations which require exclusive visas for pilgrims. Those agencies left pilgrims in limbo in Mecca and the holy sites in scorching heat, the newspaper said.

The fatalities also included 165 pilgrims from Indonesia, 98 from India and dozens more from Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Malaysia, according to an Associated Press tally. Two U.S. citizens were also reported dead.

The AP could not independently confirm the causes of death, but some countries like Jordan and Tunisia blamed the soaring heat. AP journalists saw pilgrims fainting from the scorching heat, especially on the second and third days of the Hajj. Some vomited and collapsed.

Historically, deaths are not uncommon at the Hajj, which has seen at times over 2 million people travel to Saudi Arabia for a five-day pilgrimage. The pilgrimage's history has also seen deadly stampedes and epidemics.

But this year's tally was unusually high, suggesting exceptional circumstances.

SAUDI-RELIGION-ISLAM-HAJJ

In 2015 a stampede in Mina killed over 2,400 pilgrims, the deadliest incident ever to strike the pilgrimage, according to an AP count. Saudi Arabia has never acknowledged the full toll of the stampede. A separate crane collapse at Mecca's Grand Mosque earlier the same year killed 111.

The second-deadliest incident at the Hajj was a 1990 stampede that killed 1,426 people.

During this year's Hajj period, daily high temperatures ranged between 46 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit) and 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) in Mecca and sacred sites in and around the city, according to the Saudi National Center for Meteorology. Some people fainted while trying to perform the symbolic stoning of the devil.

The Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is one of the world's largest religious gatherings. More than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj in 2024, including more than 1.6 million from 22 countries, and around 222,000 Saudi citizens and residents, according to the Saudi Hajj authorities.

Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars on crowd control and safety measures for those attending the annual five-day pilgrimage, but the sheer number of participants makes it difficult to ensure their safety.

Climate change could make the risk even greater. A 2019 study by experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that even if the world succeeds in mitigating the worst effects of climate change, the Hajj would be held in temperatures exceeding an "extreme danger threshold" from 2047 to 2052, and from 2079 to 2086.

Islam follows a lunar calendar, so the Hajj comes around 11 days earlier each year. By 2029, the Hajj will occur in April, and for several years after that it will fall in the winter, when temperatures are milder.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A U.S. Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint as President Joe Biden was visiting Los Angeles for a fundraising event over the weekend, officials said.

The agent was returning from work Saturday night when he was accosted in a residential community in Tustin, about an hour’s drive southeast of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

Someone called the Tustin Police Department shortly after 9:30 p.m. to report the robbery. Police said the agent had his bag stolen at gunpoint. The agent, who was not injured, fired his gun during the confrontation, police said. The Secret Service said they did not know if anyone was shot.

Tustin Police said Monday they had not found a suspect. Officers did find some of the agent’s stolen belongings in the area. Police reported a silver Infiniti FX35 was seen leaving the scene.

Biden and former President Barack Obama held a star-studded fundraising event in Los Angeles on Saturday that brought in more than $30 million for Biden’s reelection campaign.

Why the 1951 Tennessee baseball team had to wait 41 years to be honored. It won't happen again

Two oak ridgers on that '51 ut team.

51 trips

It won't take more than four decades for this Tennessee baseball team to be celebrated for its historic success this season, regardless of what happens in the College World Series.

The No. 1 Vols advanced to the national championship series for the first time since 1951 after they beat Florida State on Wednesday. They'll be recognized for the program's seventh trip to Omaha and for sweeping the SEC titles now, by fans and the university.

But the 1951 team had to wait 41 years for any kind of recognition. Former Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico and the Bullpen Club were the reason why it happened.

The 1951 Tennessee baseball team was finally honored over a weekend in May 1992 for its accomplishment. At the time, 1951 was still the program's only trip to the College World Series and the Vols wouldn't make it there again until 1995. Tennessee won its first five games in Omaha before it lost 3-2 to Oklahoma in the 1951 national championship.

A Knox News story about the events said "amazingly, the team never received any recognition for its achievement."

"If we did, I don't remember it," All-American third baseman B.B. Hopkins told Knox News. "Coach Delmonico is trying to build a baseball family, and he said there was no better place to start than by honoring us."

Hopkins, along with Billy Joe O'Kain, were the two members of the team from Oak Ridge High School. Hopkins was inducted into the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 . He was also a member of the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Baseball Wall of Fame.

The Vols went 16-1 in SEC play that season and finished 20-3 overall. Fourteen of the 15 players on the Cy Anderson-led team attended the events that May, which included receiving plaques at a dinner at Calhoun's and a barbecue at Hudson Field before attending the doubleheader between Tennessee and Florida.

By the time the team was honored four decades later, Anderson and left-handed pitcher John Huffstetler had died. They were both honored posthumously. There are now no living lettermen from the 1951 team, according to Tennessee athletics historian Bud Ford.

Hopkins said at the time he would have never dreamed the Vols still wouldn't have returned to Omaha 41 years later.

"Absolutely not," Hopkins said. "Cy was fired by (athletic director Gen. Robert) Neyland and the program went down hill. It never got the support and went by the wayside."

The 1951 roster also included a pitching staff of Huffstetler, Bill Joe Bowman, Bill O'Kain and Jim Gillespie. Sid Hatfield, who was named MVP, was a shortstop and pitcher.

The rest of the roster was made up of utility player Billy Dodds, second baseman Herky Payne, first baseman Dale Powell, catcher Andy Anderson, catcher Mike Overbey, center fielder Bert Rechichar, left fielder Bill Asbury, right fielder Ace Adams and shortstop Watson Bell.
