The power of passion

"Deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta in the Moremi Game Reserve resides Xigera Safari Lodge – a passion project for the Tollman Family inspired by their love of Botswana and the wild African bush. Rising up from the rich Delta soils on a framework of steel posts, the buildings stand lightly on the earth, fitting naturally amongst the large tree species of the island; the wooden-clad exteriors of the suites and main decks blend perfectly into a natural wilderness.

Part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Xigera Safari Lodge came to life after a two-year build. Every detail matters, especially in our sustainability initiatives: driven by solar power, water treatment and above-ground sewage facilities, waste management practices and a ban on single-use-plastic.

The hearts of the Batswana reveal themselves authentically in smiles and genuine service that makes guests feel at home. Wildlife delights include regular sightings of big cats (especially the resident lions and leopards), red lechwe, kudu, giraffe, impala, buffalo, wildebeest, tssessebe and the rare sitatunga. Local species entrance our guests on boats, mekoro, walks and game drives. Finally, I couldn’t talk about Xigera without mentioning the colourful sunrises and sunsets that paint the vast skyscapes dramatically each day.

I am so proud of Xigera Safari Lodge and all it encompasses, especially the beautiful people who live and work with us, and the guests who visit us."

Lodge style Unveiling the wilderness in style

A symphony of luxury and wilderness in Moremi

In a world where the charm of eco-tourism is gaining momentum, Xigera Safari Lodge surpasses expectations by reviving the notion of luxury in harmony with nature. The lodge’s contemporary design is inspired by the natural splendour of Moremi and the Okavango Delta, with organic shapes and earthy tones that pay homage to the local wildlife, flora, and indigenous culture. Every detail is handcrafted by African artisans, adding a significant personal touch to the lodge's distinctive style. This environmentally conscious ethos has become the hallmark of Xigera, promising an experience of seamless integration with the wild.

Stepping inside the private suites of Xigera Safari Lodge is akin to walking into a celebration of African heritage and craftsmanship. Each room is meticulously designed, offering guests an immersive experience, draped in elements of tribal culture, colours of the African savannah, and hints of modern elegance.

At the heart of each suite is an exquisite four-poster bed, custom designed and inspired by the intricate nests of the local weaver birds. The use of rich textiles and unique prints creates a sense of warmth and comfort that makes every room feel like a personal sanctuary.

Floor-to-ceiling glass doors provide stunning panoramic views of the wilderness, allowing guests to soak in the ethereal African sunsets and engage with the vibrant local wildlife right from their room. Bathrooms are spaces of serene indulgence, with deep soaking tubs and outdoor showers offering an intimate connection with nature, a luxury only Xigera can provide.

Each room extends into a private deck equipped with a daybed, where guests can unwind under the vast African sky. There's no better place to savour the tranquillity of the delta, witnessing the majestic play of light and shadow as day transitions into night. It is an unadulterated connection to nature, paired with the sophistication of modern living, creating a distinct sense of place and peace.

Activities at Xigera Safari Lodge

Enjoy day and night While Xigera Safari Lodge is located in a water-rich section of Moremi, its allure extends far beyond the wetlands, introducing guests to an array of unique safari experiences. Game drives form an integral part of the Xigera adventure, offered year-round and subject to the rhythm of African wildlife. Setting out in open 4x4 vehicles, guests can behold the riveting spectacle of wildlife in their natural habitat. During the chillier or wetter days, Xigera ensures your comfort isn't compromised. You will be provided with hot water bottles, cosy blankets, and lined ponchos, helping you to keep your focus on the enthralling landscapes and captivating wildlife.

An undeniable highlight of Xigera is its array of water-based activities. You can glide across the serene waterways of the delta in a two-seater glass-bottom mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, offering a unique perspective on aquatic life beneath the lily-covered surface. This is truly an experience that sets Xigera apart, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the tranquil aquatic rhythm of the Okavango.

Six-seater motorboats are also available, two of which are fitted with a glass bottom, and two featuring an upper-level roof seating structure, offering an enhanced vantage point from which to survey the landscape. Please note that these water-based adventures are subject to seasonal water levels. Regardless of the season, each day at Xigera promises a unique blend of adventure and tranquillity, forever imprinting the magic of the Moremi in your memory.

Xigera Baobab treehouse (add-on)

An add-on that every guest should consider at Xigera Safari Lodge is the enchanting experience of the Baobab Treehouse. Named after the emblematic Baobab tree, a beacon of life and resilience in the African landscape, the treehouse takes luxury to new heights, literally and figuratively. Perched ten metres above the ground, this secluded retreat offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding wilderness. It is an unforgettable experience to lay back on the plush, outdoor daybed, enveloped by the whisper of the Moremi breeze and the melodic chorus of nocturnal creatures. Remember, the Xigera Treehouse is a sought-after experience, and needs to be pre-booked to secure your night amongst the stars.

Tripadvisor comments Xigera Safari Lodge

To the perfect leopard with Gin tasting sundowner, dinner around the fire pit with fantastic 8 courses and wine, and morning elephant walking into sunrise and lion walking towards my amazing suite. Completely perfect Elin Paton
Then there is the ‘tree house‘, three floors, hot and cold running water for a shower and a flushing toilet! Next floor has a four poster bed or you can sleep under the stars on the top floor, just unbelievable! Chris C

Xigera Safari Lodge

Moremi game reserve.

Xigera Safari Lodge is one of the most luxurious lodges in the Okavango Delta, set in a beautiful location on private concession within the Moremi Game Reserve. After a complete rebuild Xigera has reopened under new ownership as one of the most exclusive and luxurious camps in Botswana, offering the ultimate flexibility for guests to shape the experience exactly as they desire. The philosophy at this stylish lodge says it all “anything, any time”.

Xigera (pronounced “kee-jera”, meaning pied kingfisher) has been on the Okavango safari scene for many years but the recent rebuild and take over by luxury boutique hotel group Red Carnation Hotels has transformed the lodge. The Red Carnation collection has 18 hotels worldwide, so the pedigree is good, with the likes of The Twevle Apostles and the impeccable Oyster Box in Kwa-Zulu Natal among the collection. Opening on 1 December 2020 the new face of this lodge is bold, sophisticated and utterly spoiling. A lodge for those looking for the ultimate luxury in stunning landscapes and varied game viewing. With Mike and Marion Meyers managing the lodge – with 40 years experience behind them – you can expect a slick safari experience.

Xigera Safari Lodge guests will not be shoe-horned into the standard safari timetable. Instead, the watchword is total flexibility and a completely bespoke approach to activities with no set times. Morning, afternoon and evening game drives are offered, as are private walking safaris, photographic workshops, private yoga, mekoro and glass-bottomed mekoro and motorboat trips, fishing in season and bush picnics, lunches or breakfasts. The team of guides at Xigera Safari Lodge have been handpicked and led by Mike Myers who has 40 years’ experience as a wildlife and conservation specialist.

Xigera is situated in an area which has permanent water all year round, which makes it the perfect water and land activity camp and all the activities will be in total privacy because NG28 is a private concession, but one which benefits from the astonishingly rich and productive wildlife of the Moremi Game Reserve .

The lodge sits on stilts under a canopy of large trees and benefits from superb views of the floodplains. Elevated walkways connect the different areas of camp. Xigera Safari Lodge has been constructed with undulating rooflines and scorched timber cladding. The suites have views onto the lily-covered lagoons: the lily is the camp’s emblem and a lily-inspired pavilion will provide shade overlooking the water’s edge. The sunken lounge has a huge copper lily-design centrally suspended fireplace.

The lodge’s interiors are the spectacular result of a collaboration with the award-winning Southern Guild Gallery. Every piece in the lodge’s collection of furniture, sculpture and ceramics is a work of art in itself and has been specially commissioned and made for the lodge over a period of 18 months. The pieces will include works by more than 30 leading African artists and craftspeople.

Xigera Safari Lodge has twelve suites, and one family suite suitable for two couples or a family. The suites all have air-conditioning and feature separate lounge, bedroom and dressing room and private deck, daybed with gazebo and each can accommodate indoor and outdoor private dining for up to four people. The large bathrooms also feature outdoor showers. The suites are extraordinarily spacious: 104 sq metres internally with 80 sq metres outside decking and 168 sq metres family suite with 105 sq metres decking. Wifi, TV and safes are provided in all suites, room service is fully available.

Red Carnation properties, who own Xigera Safari Lodge, are known for their attention to detail and personal touches- and service. With an impressive ratio of 105 staff to 24 guests you can expect incredibly attentive and personalised service . The African inspired menus are served by an interactive kitchen and the cellar serves wine from the owner’s award winning vineyard, Bouchard Finlayson, as well as other top wines. Post dinner, the boma has a totemic firepit sculpture by Conrad Hicks around which to sit, enjoy a digestif and stargaze.

To work up an appetite for all the fabulous meals there is a state of the art gym as well as a stunning pool. This swimming pool’s dark water is rest for the eyes by comparison with the usual stark brilliant blue; the views from the pool over the river give the sense that you are immersed in the Delta’s natural waterways.

For something more cerebral the library, an air conditioned haven of peace, will feature talks from specialists. Wellness is a real feature of the camp. Two spa rooms will provide a wide range of treatments and treatments can also be given in the suites. Guest practitioners will create a programme based on wellness, mindfulness and holistic healing with the perfect backdrop of the pristine natural Delta environment.

Birding in Xigera is excellent and guests can see the Pel’s Fishing Owl, African Skimmer, Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane, Lesser Jacana and plenty of eagles, vultures, raptors and kingfishers. An abundance of game includes red lechwe, lion, spotted hyena and leopard and the highest density of the rare sitatunga antelope found in the Delta. Although Xigera is considered to be a permanent water camp, there is a large presence of lion, leopard, hyena and buffalo on the islands. These animals wade and swim between the islands in search of food.

The environmental credentials are impressive and central to the philosophy of the lodge which will be diesel free and entirely solar powered and will use a 400kW Tesla plant incorporating lithium iron batteries and Tesla invertors. The solar farm will be the largest in the Delta.

Xigera Safari Lodge is reached by a 25 minute light aircraft connection from Maun airport to the Xigera airstrip, or around an hour and 20 minutes from Kasane airport. A 10-minute drive in a game drive vehicle will bring you to Xigera itself.

Children aged twelve and over are welcome and charged at a full adult rate.

Xigera Safari Lodge, Botswana: a sustainable safari in the Okavango Delta

Waterway Botswana

Why book? A lavish reinvention of a much-loved location in a plum private concession within the wild Moremi Game Reserve. It’s owned and run by fourth-generation hoteliers, so every inch and detail champions Africa ’s coolest designers and artists. To this add year-round access to the Delta’s pristine waterways and experienced guides tuned into the nuances of the landscapes, animals and seasons.

Sunken Lily Lounge at Xigera Safari Lodge Botswana

Set the scene An off-grid camp, run like a smart hotel by travel stalwarts the Tollman family, Xigera represents the sharp edge of transformative, sustainable travel in one of Botswana ’s prime private concessions. Thanks to the family’s takeover of this former Wilderness Safaris-run property on the western edge of Moremi Game Reserve, the dozen perfectly positioned, solar-powered tents, elevated between riverine forest, are filled to the brim with bespoke, artisanal pieces and artworks by Southern Africa’s creatives. This is the most pampered, plush, personalised safari to be had in the Delta.

The backstory The original Xigera, a modest camp built from reed and thatch, was the very first property opened by Wilderness Safaris in Botswana in the mid-1980s. Up until recently, the Tollmans owned a sizable share in Wilderness Safaris – a fraction of their global travel empire, but significant because of their commitment to Africa. For more than 20 years Stanley Tollman brought friends and family to the delta to be privately guided by the erudite and hugely entertaining Mike Myers. In the parting of ways with Wilderness, the family kept Xigera, fulfilling a lifelong dream of rebuilding and refining their favourite lodge. Today, Myers and his wife Marian have become the Dereck and Beverly Joubert of Xigera. They oversee operations, mixing the family’s hospitality expertise with their safari experience and a deep understanding of operating sustainably in the middle of nowhere.

Bedroom with painted Kassena furniture at Xigera Safari Lodge Botswana

The rooms The 12 suites, most facing east over the floodplains, are linked to the main areas by elevated boardwalks winding between the trees filled with birdlife. Each is a self-contained oasis of indoor-outdoor living spaces filled with contemporary furniture and art , commissioned and sourced through Cape Town ’s Southern Guild gallery. Bedrooms are lavishly layered – plump cushions, ornate Ardmore bedside lamps, rich, textured fabrics – it’s hard to believe you’re in the wilderness. While the dressing room is tucked behind the bedroom, the spacious en-suite bathroom has a free-standing copper bath, twin bronze lily-flower basins and a choice of indoor and outdoor showers.

Salad dish at Xigera Safari Lodge Botswana

Food and drink Ingenuity and variety spring from the kitchen – it feels as if you’re eating in a different restaurant every time, served in unique, last-minute surprise locations. A picnic lunch might be taken under a fig tree in the middle of the reserve, a romantic plated dinner on your private deck, sundowner snacks in the baobab-sculpture treehouse , a fireside barbecue in the boma with its giant centrepiece by Conrad Hicks. There’s even English tea with chocolate cake, smoked-salmon sandwiches, cream scones and pastel macarons. There are also authentic Indian curries (try the fragrant fish curry) and tandoori specialities on the menu every day, but you can order whatever else you feel like, from steak frites to a buddha bowl. House wines are from the family’s own cool-climate vineyards in South Africa , but the cellar holds many boutique labels besides.

The spa Definitely book a skin-quenching Tata Harper facial (the first African outpost of this cult organic range) or a full-body massage using botanical-enriched oils in one of Xigera’s two spa therapy pods. These open up fully to take in the views or can be closed to cocoon you against the elements. There is a gym, pool and yoga pavilion for sunrise practice with a resident teacher beneath Xigera’s very own folly, the water lily sculpture designed by architect Anton de Kock.

Gazebo at Xigera Safari Lodge Botswana

The area The lodge’s designer interiors and superb service are wonderfully distracting, but it’s the Delta’s watery wonderland that demands attention and exploration by boat, mokoro (request one of the glass-bottomed canoes), four-wheel-drive game-viewer or on a guided walk. Photograph lions stalking through long grass, watch red lechwe antelopes splash effortlessly through the water or elephants, knee deep, feeding on water-lily roots. Birding is excellent, especially on foot.

The service Many of the staff have been part of the Xigera family for decades, and are enormously proud of the new lodge, but it is a quiet, intentional, service-driven confidence – nothing is too much trouble and personal quirks are indulged and remembered, as they would be in one of the Tollmans’ Red Carnation city hotels. Days unfold as energetically or as leisurely as you want, with plans and surprises orchestrated with meticulous attention to detail in the background thanks to your private guide and butler.

Artwork inspired by an aerial view of the Okavango Delta

For families There’s no better place for a multi-gen gathering (the family suite is ideal for those with tweens or teens), but the camp is so spread out that a romantic rendezvous will be just that – deeply private, as if you’re the only guests in residence.

Eco effort Full marks for sustainable design, build and operations. Central to the efficient off-grid running of Xigera is the state-of-the-art Tesla solar hybrid-power system, which supplies almost 100 per cent of the camp and nearby staff village’s energy. Many of the eco efforts are behind the scenes, like the composter for organic kitchen waste that produces ‘black gold’ to boost the kitchen gardens; the biodegradable cleaning products and the gorgeously scented toiletries, packaged in recyclable grass-green glass; grey water from the above-ground sewage system that safely irrigates the gardens. The water supply throughout the lodge is purified via the latest in reverse-osmosis technology before being remineralised (tap water is perfectly safe to drink and guests receive a sleek, refillable water flask). Thermodynamic geysers supply hot water using minimal energy, while the tinted glass windows in the guest tents insulate the interiors against heat and cold depending on the time of year.

Mangosteen Suite at Xigera Safari Lodge Botswana

Accessibility for those with mobility impairments The lodge is not fully accessible for those with limited mobility.

Anything left to mention? Besides the obvious game-viewing options, book a helicopter trip to see the Delta’s large herds of elephant, buffalo, hippo pods and flocks of water birds. Spend a night in the baobab treehouse, a triple-storey, off-grid rooftop star bed (there’s a second bedroom below it, with drop-down canvas walls, should the open-air bed feel too scary).

Xigera Safari Lodge

Situated in the heart of the unesco world heritage listed okavango delta.

Botswana’s newest and most glamorous lodge, Xigera Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Okavango Delta and is a member of the acclaimed Red Carnation Hotel group – one of just 20 properties from around the world.

Pronounced ‘kee-jera’ the lodge is named after one of its local inhabitants – the Pied Kingfisher. Situated on an island within the renowned Moremi Game Reserve , this exclusive lodge has just 12 beautifully designed suites that overlook pristine floodplains that attract a myriad of wildlife.

With inspiration coming from its incredible surroundings, Xigera Safari Lodge’s design is dedicated to celebrating Africa’s art, design and creativity. The lodge’s opulent interiors express a deep connection to the natural landscape, and the meticulously crafted décor pays homage to the human heritage of the region.

Not only is the property lavish in its style and design, but at the heart of its creation are the latest conservation and sustainability techniques. It is powered almost entirely on solar energy and has eliminated all single-use plastics.

No two suites are the same at this ultra-glamorous lodge, with each suite unique in design, décor and name (each named after a different native plant). The suites are surrounded by the African wilderness and spread out across two islands, ensuring a truly intimate experience. Grand in their size and design (each suite is 184-square metres in size), Xigera Safari Lodge offers some of the largest living spaces in the Okavango . The rooms boast spacious lounges, a dressing room and ensuite bathrooms that feature both indoor and outdoor showers along with a free-standing bath looking out onto natural bush. There are also indoor and outdoor dining spaces within suites that can accommodate up to four guests – perfect for families or groups travelling together. Guests can also enjoy spa and beauty treatments within the privacy of their own suite.

An exclusive Family Suite blends shared spaces for spending time together with quiet spots to relax in privacy and peace. The suite has two spacious bedrooms – each with their own ensuite bathroom and outdoor shower – a superb lounge area and an expansive deck. Children aged 12 and over are welcomed at Xigera Safari Lodge and the lodge has curated a child-friendly program with customised age-appropriate activities.

Xigera’s Baobab Treehouse Experience

Rising above a stand of indigenous Croton trees, this remarkable structure is built in the shape of a baobab tree and ascends nearly 10-metres above the floodplain. Inside the “trunk” of the three-storey treehouse is a winding staircase that leads to the spacious 2nd floor bedroom and ensuite bathroom. The space has canvas walls that can be zipped or un-zipped opening up to the floodplain below. At the top of the tree, guests will find an expansive deck with an open-air king-size bed for sleeping under the stars. The “Baobab Treehouse Experience” is available for sundowners and a picnic-style dinner on the deck or an exclusive overnight stay under the magical night sky.

Xigera Baobab Tree House

Dining at Xigera is a journey for the senses with dishes prepared by talented chefs and inspired by the flavours of Africa. The elegant al fresco dining area is at the heart of the lodge’s culinary experience but guests can also enjoy private dining at any time, as well as bush breakfasts and picnics in the wild. For after dinner drinks and sharing stories from the day’s adventures, there is no better place than the open-air bush-style fire pit, connected to the lodge by a raised walkway.

UNESCO World Heritage Listed

Making the most of its awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Listed surroundings, the lodge offers a wealth of extraordinary guided experiences including 4WD game drives, mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions, motorboat safaris, sunrise yoga overlooking the floodplains and of course magical evening sundowners. Private game-drives and thrilling helicopter safaris can also be arranged (extra cost).

Xigera Safari Lodge

About Xigera Safari Lodge

Xigera (pronounced 'keejera') is within a private area of Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve, in the heart of ...

... the Okavango Delta. When the water levels are high in the Delta, it feels as if water is everywhere around the camp, and the luxuriant vegetation makes this seem one of the Delta's most tropical corners. Xigera Camp changed hands in 2019. It was subsequently re-built and re-opened as 'Xigera Safari Lodge' in December 2020 - having been extensively re-modelled. Considerable opulence and comfort are now its hallmarks, and it caters unashamedly for those who will want room service, air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs as part of their Delta experience. Xigera's location offers visitors the kind of lush, watery experience that many first-time visitors might expect in the Okavango Delta: not the best for big-game, but ideal for water-based activities and a totally tropical feel. It's now one of the most luxurious, even palatial, lodges in the Okavango - with a very substantial price tag to match. Air-conditioning, satellite TV channels and room service are the norm in five-star hotels, but not yet in the camps in the Okavango. So is the new Xigera a trail-blazer of what's to come? Or a profligate use of resources for travellers who insist upon having every luxury, even here? The jury's currently out...

When to go to Moremi Game Reserve

Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Xigera Safari Lodge in Moremi Game Reserve

Botswana in January

January is at the peak of Botswana’s rainy season. These rains are often in the evening and are short but heavy, with occasional thunderstorms. Temperatures will still be high but cooler than October–December. Animals are generally dispersed, and not easy to spot, with the best game viewing found in the north of Chief’s Island and on the eastern and southern sides of the Okavango Delta . January is also one of the best months to see the zebra and wildebeest migration in the Makgadikgadi salt pans and at Nxai Pan . Migratory birds abound throughout northern Botswana, along with a large number of breeding flamingos in the flooded salt pans. Rates are generally relatively low, making this a good time to visit on a budget.

  • Temperatures are still warm, with occasional thunderstorms
  • The bush feels alive; birdlife is at its most spectacular
  • Big game is dispersed
  • Zebra & wildebeest migration at its height
  • Availability in lodges and camps is often very good

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in January

Botswana in February

The weather in February is very similar to January, with heavy rain most days – often towards evening – and temperatures on the high side, albeit cooling off from the rains and surface water. Across northern Botswana, the landscape feels green and alive; insects and smaller animals are more easily seen, and many birds and animals are raising their young. However, the rains have created pools and waterholes in the bush and thicker vegetation and tall grass makes it trickier to spot larger animals. Further south, the game viewing is beginning to pick up in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Visitor numbers remain low, with attendant rates and availability in camps and lodges.

  • Temperatures still warm with occasional thunderstorms
  • Many animals with young; birdlife at its most spectacular
  • Game viewing picking up in the Central Kalahari
  • Visitor numbers are low, so camp availability can be very good

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in February

Botswana in March

March usually sees Botswana’s main rains starting to tail off. Many days will be clear, with a strong sun raising temperatures. On some days clouds will build, and the late-afternoon may see a short thunderstorm. Across the country, the landscape is green and alive. Many birds and animals are finishing raising their young. Much of the migration is now moving north towards the Savute area or Chobe National Park, though thick vegetation still makes it trickier to spot even larger animals. March is one of the best times to be in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, where many of the pans fill up and animals come to drink, closely followed by predators. With few visitors in most areas, rates may still be relatively low.

  • Variable weather: rains tailing off but still hot
  • Occasional small thunderstorms
  • Many animals finish raising their young; birdlife still spectacular
  • The best time to visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve
  • Few tourists visit during March, so rates often low

Weather in March

Botswana in April

During April the rains have usually stopped, though there may be still be the odd late downpour. This results in clear skies and a lovely green, lush landscape. Night-time temperatures usually start to drop during April with this being most noticeable in the Central Kalahari and the Makgadikgadi areas. The Central Kalahari is really coming into its own at this point and from April through to May/June the Savute region is a particular favourite of ours, with good predator/prey interaction. In much of northern Botswana, the camps are coming into their “shoulder” season, so rates are on the rise but still relatively low.

  • Evening temperatures cooling with just the odd shower
  • Northern Botswana is green and lush
  • Many animals still with young; good predator/prey interaction
  • Central Kalahari and Savute the best places for wildlife
  • A popular shoulder season time to book. Rates relatively low

Weather in April

Botswana in May

May is a very popular month to visit Botswana, often the last month of the “shoulder” season before camp rates hit their peak. While there is very little chance of rain, the annual floods from Angola are starting to make their way through the northern part of the Delta, and will eventually reach the majority of the Okavango late June. With cooler temperatures morning and evening, predator activity tends to be higher, although tall grasses can still obstruct game viewing. With cool crisp evenings, and the game viewing really picking up, this is the favourite time to visit for many of our team – and camp bookings throughout Botswana are snapped up quickly.

  • Cool mornings and evenings with little chance of rain
  • Game viewing is beginning to pick up
  • Predator activity increasing, though grasses still quite high
  • Last month of “shoulder” season for most camps
  • Availability goes quickly throughout Botswana

A very good time to visit

Weather in May

Botswana in June

June is the real start of the dry season. Temperatures are still cool in the morning and evenings with night-time temperatures sometimes reaching freezing, rising to 25–30 degrees Celsius during the day, with blue skies. Along with this comes a certain clarity to the air, favourable for serious photographers. Surface water and waterholes begin to dry up during this period and many animals begin to congregate around the remaining areas with water. Visibility is improving as the grass is beginning to die back, and game viewing is very good everywhere, with particular improvement in the Kwando–Linyanti areas. Not surprisingly, camp availability is becoming scarce and rates are high.

  • Warm, comfortable days; cold nights, morning & evenings
  • Air clarity favours serious photographers
  • Wildlife is gravitating to waterholes, making game-viewing productive
  • Grasses beginning to die back
  • Most camps are into peak season, with rates correspondingly high

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in June

Botswana in July

Evenings and mornings are still cool in July, and this combined with great game viewing makes it one of the most popular times to visit Botswana. Vegetation is really thinning out now making game easier to spot, with the few remaining waterholes attracting lots of wildlife. The north-eastern side of Chobe National Park, along the Chobe River, is also very rewarding, although this area can become very busy. Game viewing is extremely good in the Khwai areas, too, but again, this is a public area and – unlike in the private concessions of the Delta – vehicle numbers can be high. Camps are now very much into the peak season, and tend to be full.

  • Comfortable days; cold nights, morning & evenings
  • Game viewing very good as vegetation dies back and waterholes dry out
  • Chobe Riverfront and Khwai areas become very busy
  • Private concessions helps to avoid potentially high vehicle numbers
  • Now very much into peak season

Weather in July

Botswana in August

August is a popular time to visit Botswana, coinciding with the European summer holidays, and camp availability is difficult. Temperatures are generally cool at night, and comfortable during the day, although towards the end of the month they can rise above 35 degrees Celsius (albeit with low humidity). Cloudless skies bring spectacular star-gazing. Wildlife has congregated around the few remaining water sources, and much of the vegetation has now died back, so wildlife viewing tends to be varied and rewarding, particularly in the Okavango Delta. Depending on the rains in Angola this can also be one of the best times to see the delta floods at their peak.

  • Dry, warm days, with mainly cool nights
  • Cloudless skies with spectacular stars at night
  • A fantastic time for wildlife watching, particularly in the Okavango
  • Traditionally one of the best times to see the Delta in full flood
  • Peak season: so high rates and many lodges full

Weather in August

Botswana in September

September is another favourite month for some of our team members. Daytime temperatures are getting warmer, but nights remain cool. With the drier conditions, most of the greenery has faded from the landscape, and dust or even smoke create hazy conditions that aren’t great for photographers – though this does result in fantastic sunsets. This is another extremely good month for game viewing, with large numbers of elephant and buffalo congregating in the Chobe region and migrant birds begin to return to Botswana. Rates remain high – and availability correspondingly low.

  • Warmer days and cool nights
  • One of the best months for wildlife viewing
  • Large congregations of elephant & buffalo in the Chobe region
  • Hazy conditions less good for photographers, but brilliant sunsets
  • High season rates; many lodges & camps are full

Weather in September

Botswana in October

October is the one of the hottest months of the year, and usually one of the driest. Towards the end of the month the chances of rain can increase, and along with this can come greater humidity. The air is usually dry and hazy, making photography more challenging, but the lack of water and vegetation result in very good big-game viewing. Water levels are now much lower, so water-based activities such as boating, mokoro trips and fishing cease in many of the camps which are not on major tributaries.

  • Hot temperatures, with the chance of rain towards the end of the month
  • Great big-game viewing
  • Less opportunity for water activities in camps as floods recede
  • Hazy air not great for photographers
  • Final month of the peak season in camps

Weather in October

Botswana in November

November usually marks the end of the dry season in Botswana, when increasing temperatures drive a rise in humidity, sometimes culminating in the first rains. These are often short but very heavy showers in the late afternoon or during the night, and can be spectacular. The rains lower the temperatures slightly but bring a flush of green back into the dry landscapes. As waterholes in surrounding areas fill, wildlife will gradually begin to disperse as it is not restricted by the availability of water. November is a great time for birdwatching, with the arrival of many migrant birds. The first couple of weeks are very popular with travellers looking for great game viewing at lower rates as Botswana enters the “shoulder” season.

  • Hot in the middle of the day; sometimes humid
  • Heavy showers increasingly likely as the month progresses
  • Wildlife watching still good, but less reliable once it rains
  • Migrant birds start to arrive
  • “Shoulder” season brings mid-range rates in camps

Weather in November

Botswana in December

The rains in Botswana have now started, bringing some respite to the high temperatures. Game viewing becomes harder as wildlife is more dispersed but great sightings can still be had in the right areas such as Khwai and the Kwara and Mombo concessions. Areas such as the Makgadikgadi Pans change completely with the salt pans becoming covered in a shallow layer of water attracting large numbers of breeding flamingos. Low-season rates at many camps are a draw.

  • Temperatures starting to fall from the highs of October/November
  • Very high chance of rain, usually large heavy storms for short periods
  • Flamingos return to breed at the Makgadikgadi Pans
  • Wildlife more dispersed, so game viewing more challenging
  • Typically low-season rates in the camps
