Portugal home to Best Beach Destination in Europe, but it might not be where you think it is
FUNCHAL – Madeira’s Porto Santo Island took top honor at the World Travel Awards gala on Wednesday in Berlin, Germany, receiving for the first time the trophy for “Best Beach Destination in Europe.”
According to the Madeiran Secretariat for Tourism and Culture, the Portuguese archipelago received two more awards: “Best Island Destination in Europe” and the Madeira Promotion Association as the best “Tourism Entity.”
“This is an exceptional night for Madeira, for Porto Santo and for tourism,” said Madeira’s Secretary of Tourism and Culture Eduardo Jesus in a prepared statement. “Today, Madeira, Porto Santo and Madeira Tourism, through the Promotion Association, have been elevated to the highest level of international recognition.”
The 5.5-mile-long Porto Santo beach, known for its fine golden sand, beat out rivals in Algarve; Cannes (France); Corfu and Costa Navarino (Greece); Majorca and Marbella (Spain); and Sardinia (Italy).
Madeira won the trophy for “Best Island Destination in Europe” for the 10th time, beating the Azores; the Canary Islands, Ibiza and Mallorca in Spain; Crete and Cyclades in Greece; Sardinia and Sicily in Italy; Malta; Cyprus; and Guernsey and Jersey in the United Kingdom.
The Madeira Promotion Association was a first time winner, beating nominees such as the tourism organizations of France, Austria, Croatia, Ireland, Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Slovenia, Portugal and Visit England.
At the ceremony, it was also announced that Madeira will host two international World Travel Awards ceremonies next November, namely the World Golf Awards on the 22nd and the World Gala on the 24th.
“The organization of these events is a unique opportunity to show the world what a unique and special destination the [Madeira] region is,” Jesus said.
Heralded as “the Oscars of the travel industry,” the World Travel Awards (WTA) reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.

Madeira again at the World Travel Awards 2023
Madeira Island is once again nominated for the 30th edition of the highly prestigious 'World Travel Awards 2023'.
The Best Island Destination in the World (in title), once again stands out from the competition by receiving a total of five nominations for this year's World Travel Awards. These distinctions are considered by experts in the tourism industry as being "the most prestigious and recognised awards" in the sector.
The Pearl of the Atlantic, as it has been known for decades, received the following nominations: Best Island Destination in Europe ; Best Adventure Destination in Europe ; Best Destination for Festivals and Events in Europe ; Best Sustainable Destination in Europe ; and Best Beach Destination in Europe .
According to Madeira Tourism, these awards, created in 1993 and for which Madeira has received several distinctions every year, "prove the quality of Madeira and Porto Santo 's offer as a tourist destination of excellence and have proven to be an excellent communication tool that, more than ever, places the destination in an excellent position".
We also recall that Madeira Island "has been elected the "Best Island Destination in the World" multiple times, awards that "attest to the exceptional nature of this archipelago, which is increasingly recognised as one of the most seductive tourist destinations on a global scale". In recent years, "this island has received awards for its excellence in areas such as culture and traditions, safety, hotels, golfing conditions and the richness of its ecosystems," adds the government source. In this regard, "the consecration of the Laurel Forest or Laurissilva Forest as World Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO stands out".
The European Gala of the World Travel Awards, which celebrates its 30th edition this year, will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023, in Georgia, in Batumi.

The leaders and figureheads of global travel and tourism will gather in the capital Funchal to find out who amongst them has been voted the industry’s best of the best.
The red-carpet banquet will take place at Savoy Palace from Savoy Signature, and will mark the climax of WTA’s Grand Tour 2024, a global search for the world’s finest travel organisations.
Graham Cooke, Founder, of World Travel Awards, says: “I am honoured that our Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2024 will take place in majestic Madeira, a destination blessed with incredible landscapes, fascinating culture, and delicious cuisine. This Atlantic jewel is also a world-class example of sensible tourism: a sector that is the engine of the economy but well balanced and managed sustainably.”
He adds: “I look forward to joining the most senior travel industry figureheads from across the world for what promises to be a fabulous event that will live long in everyone’s memory.”
Eduardo Jesus, Regional Secretary of Tourism and Culture and President of the Madeira Promotion Bureau says: “It is a great honour for Madeira to host this important ceremony,” recalling that the WTA Europe Gala Ceremony 2019 took place in Funchal.
He adds: “The hosting of this event presents itself as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show the world how Madeira is a unique and special destination."
A short, scenic walk from the heart of Funchal’s charming Old Town, the Savoy Palace is an exquisite modern take on island hospitality.
Roberto Santa Clara, CEO, Savoy Signature, says: “Hosting the WTA Grand Final at Savoy Palace presents a unique opportunity, and we are fully committed to embracing this challenge, striving to enhance the prestige of the hotel, showcasing the beauty of the island, and promoting Portugal on a global scale.”
During the same week, Madeira will also play host to the 11th annual World Golf Awards, part of the World Travel Awards family. The ceremony will bring together golf tourism leaders from across the world for what will mark the first World Golf Awards to take place in Madeira. Emirates recognised for excellence with nine wins at the 2024 Business Traveller Awards, World Travel Awards and International Loyalty Awards 2024
DUBAI, UAE, 9 May 2024: Emirates took home top honours at the Business Travel Middle East Awards (BTME), World Travel Awards (WTA) 2024, and International Loyalty Awards 2024, a testament to its ongoing investments and initiatives to provide customers with the best-in-industry travel experiences, in the air and on the ground.
The prestigious travel awards ceremonies were held on the sidelines of the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai this week and attended by industry leaders and professionals from across the world participating in the region’s biggest travel trade event.
Business Traveller Middle East Awards 2024
Emirates was named ‘Best Airline Worldwide’ at the Business Traveller Middle East Awards 2024 and scooped up four additional gongs for: ‘Airline with the Best Premium Economy Class’; ‘Airline with the Best First Class’; ‘Best Airport Lounge in the Middle East’; and ‘Airline with the Best Frequent Flyer Programme’.
Adil Al Ghaith, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Gulf, Middle East and Central Asia, and Dr Nejib Ben Khedher, Divisional Senior Vice President, Skywards, received the awards on behalf of the airline.
World Travel Awards 2024
At the World Travel Awards, Emirates took home top accolades for: ‘Middle East’s Leading Airline 2024’; ‘Middle East's Leading Airline - First Class 2024’; and Middle East’s Leading Airline Rewards Programme 2024 – Skywards.
International Loyalty Awards 2024
Emirates Skywards also won “Global Loyalty Programme of the Year Middle East” at the International Loyalty Awards 2024 – one of the most significant and prestigious awards within the industry. With more than 30 million members worldwide – Emirates Skywards continues to be one of the most valued and recognised loyalty programmes in the world.
Over the years, Emirates has earned a reputation for providing world class products and services to customers across all classes of travel, both onboard and on the ground. In just the past year, the airline had introduced a slew of product enhancements, notably the introduction of complimentary loungewear and meal pre-ordering for Business Class travellers, the re-opening of 8 dedicated Emirates Lounges around the world after a full facility refresh, and the roll-out of 16 more A380s offering the latest cabin interiors after a nose-to-tail retrofit.
This week at ATM, Emirates announced it will add 71 A380s and Boeing 777s to its multi-billion dollar retrofit programme, expanding it to 191 aircraft, nearly its entire passenger fleet, to ensure Emirates customers continue to “fly better” for years to come.
The airline will offer its popular Premium Economy product to customers in 42 cities by February 2025 as the first batch of A350 aircraft join its fleet from September, in addition to newly retrofitted aircraft equipped with Premium Economy re-entering service.
