Mayon Volcano

Famous for its “Perfect Cone”, the Mayon Volcano is the Philippines’ most active volcano and the most popular tourist destination in the Bicol Region. With a height of 2,463 meters, it is the centerpiece of the Albay province, which is about 300 kilometers southeast of Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

Mayon Volcano has had 49, recorded eruptions, and continues to be active. Through the years, life and property has been claimed by this wonder of nature. Its first recorded eruption was in year 1616. Even without volcanic activity, the volcano continues to be dangerous for climbers, including the more experienced ones. Its steep slope make it difficult for climbing, thus it has claimed the lives of climbers in the recent years. Rock avalanches and landslides are common. If you want to climb the volcano, you’ll have to work your way through the forest, grasslands, and deserts. The safest way is to pass on the north western slope, but you will have to register at PHILVOCS to climb. Once you reach the summit, be wary of the dangerous fumes emitted by the Volcano. A gas mask in hand will be really useful.

Apart from climbing, you can go nature hiking and marvel at the many wonderful animals such as the parakeet, red jungle fowl, owl, fruit dove just to name a few. You can also do many activities such as hiking, camping, climbing, bird watching as well as photography.

The best time to visit the volcano is between the months of March and May. Do not visit the volcano during rainy season (Nov to Jan) because it is more dangerous. You can go there by land through the Quirino highway, which is about 553 kilometers away. The journey will take about 8 to 10 hours, and many buses depart every day from Manila to Legaspi.

Mayon Volcano is one of the top attractions not only in Legazpi but the whole province of Albay .  It is regarded as sacred in Philippine mythology and is home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna including the nearly-threatened Luzon Bleeding Heart and the critically-endangered Philippine Cockatoo .  It was declared a natural park in 2000 and is one of the protected areas in the region.

Mayon Volcano is known as having the “perfect cone” for its perfect symmetric conical shape and often described as “a beautiful disaster” being the most active volcano in the country with more than 50 recorded eruptions in the past 500 years.  Its eruption in 1814 is considered as the most destructive one which resulted in burning of trees and damaging of rivers as well as the areas surrounding the volcano.  The Cagsawa Ruins, with only the church bell tower existing presently, is a prominent reminder of this unfortunate event.

Mayon Volcano is featured in the back portion of P100 Philippine money. There are ATV and 4×4 tours and trekking offered by several operators in Legazpi and nearby towns.

Usually they look perfectly conical, with a smoking hole on their top. Do you know that such a volcano really exists? It is located in the Philippines. Its name is Mayon Volcano, and one of the best views to its beauty can be observed from a city, called Legazpi. So, if you travel around the Philippines and your itinerary route passes nearby, don’t skip this amazing volcanic image!

Basic facts about Mayon Volcano

Mayon is one of the Pacific Rim volcanoes, located in the southeast end of Luzon Island. It is 2462 m high, and is the most active volcano in the Philippines. Its eruptions are not very strong, but are quite often and regular. It is well known for its perfect conical shape. Its crater is small and narrow, but there is always something getting out of it. Sometimes it is erupting lava. But even in its most quiet periods, there is always a tiny stream of smoke.

The volcano is located in a highly populated area, near the Albay Gulf. It is surrounded by several cities and many villages. The largest of them is Legazpi, and it is usually the most popular starting point for visiting and exploring Mayon Volcano. That’s why we chose it as a Mayon destination. But let’s learn more about Mayon and the history of the area around.

Legazpi and Mayon Volcano

History of Legazpi and Mayon Volcano area

The area around Mayon Volcano and the present day Legazpi has been always a place exposed to various natural disasters- volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and typhoons. Nevertheless, it has flourished civilization since ancient times.

The Spaniards came in 1569, lead by one of the Legazpi’s conquistadors, and added this area to the Spanish Empire. They built some churches, of which some remained until today, although in new versions. During the most of that time, there wasn’t a city called “Legazpi”, but many small towns and villages in the area. One of these towns was Cagsawa, built on the eastern foot of Mayon Volcano. But it had unlucky fate.

In 1814, a deadly eruption came from the throat of the volcano. It devastated the whole area around what is today Legazpi, mainly by ash and volcanic bombs, causing fire and destroying the rivers. And the effect on Cagsawa was the deadliest- 1200 of its citizens died in the disaster. Most of its buildings were destroyed, and the only prominent construction that can be seen today is its church tower.

Most of those who survived the eruption left the area. But later many of them returned, founding a new settlement, called Binanuahan. It quickly united with the neighboring settlements, forming a city, called Albay Nuevo. And in 1856 it was renamed into Legazpi. Thus the modern city of Legazpi was born.

Later it passed through all general events happened in the Philippines- the end of the Spanish rule, the Philippine Revolution, the American period and the independent Philippines. During that time Legazpi has lost its city status two times, then again was declared as a “city”. Finally, it gradually turned into a tourist destination. And all the time the magnificent Mayon Volcano is looking over Legazpi, most of the time “in good mood” with tiny white smoke, but sometimes (in fact, quite often, at least once in several years!) it is “angry” and “furious”.

Our trip to Legazpi and Cagsawa

So, knowing all of it, we planned Legazpi and Mayon Volcano as a part of our Philippines itinerary . We arrived from Cebu by plane. But before focusing on Legazpi and Mayon, first we made a trip to Donsol, trying to see its whale sharks. Donsol is some 45 km away from Legazpi, but even from there, during our whale shark cruise, we could see the distant cone of Mayon Volcano. And after the cruise we back to Legazpi.

What to see in Legazpi

There are not too many attractions in Legazpi City itself. It is just a colorful city, full of resident areas, malls, parks, some new churches, jeepneys, tricycles, and many other kinds of transportation. A colorful place, full of life. And as everywhere in the Philippines, there are many church buildings in the city. Of them the most beautiful one is San Raphael’s Church, near the center and LCC Mall. Rizal Park is at the other side of the mall- a favorite place for the locals.

Maybe the most beautiful part of the city is its sea coast (its southeast section). You can walk at the coast and visit the nearby Sleeping Lion Hill and the Legazpi Monument- two of the city’s landmarks. Then you can proceed your walk along the so-called Puro Beach. You can reach the Legazpi Tourism Marker and from there you can enjoy a great panoramic view to the Albay Gulf, the city on its coast and the magnificent Mayon Volcano rising behind it.

There are more places to visit in Legazpi, but all of them are related to Mayon Volcano, so it is time to focus on it.

Check your Legazpi accommodation on Booking!

Check your Legazpi accommodation on Agoda!

Lignon Hill

The first and nearest to the city center place to observe Mayon is a park, called Lignon Hill. It is a nice place with some local attractions, such as a zipline and some others. But the most important part of the park is its panoramic view deck. From here you can make stunning volcano photos.

There is one more important place in Lignon Hill. It is not so attractive, but is very important. Actually, you don’t need to visit it, but you must check its website, if you want to hike Mayon Volcano. This is the headquarters of PHIVOLCS – The Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seizmology. From there you can get all the information about the current status of the volcano, which, needless to say, is very important for your life during a Mayon hike.

Cagsawa Ruins

This is the most popular and interesting place in Legazpi, related to Mayon Volcano. That’s why it has become Legazpi’s main landmark. This place takes you back in time, and at the same time you can enjoy stunning views to the volcano, along with the old Cagsawa Church tower, which remained still in time, since 1814.

We arrived in Legazpi from Donsol and slept in Commuter’s Inn , a nice budget hotel in the southern parts of the city. Then we made our Cagsawa trip on the next morning. Unfortunately, it was cloudy with occasional light rain, and Mayon was hidden in the clouds. But we didn’t want to miss the view of the volcano from this spot.

So, we found a jeepney (there are many jeepneys you can get from every main boulevard in Legazpi) going to Cagsawa. You can just ask the jeepney drive whether it is going to Cagsawa, but to make the things easier, better ask your hotel jeepneys with which signs should you stop, as we did. The jeepneys don’t go exactly to Cagsawa, but some 200 m before it. You can see a T-junction with a stone model of the Cagsawa Church tower and a sign “Welcome to Cagsawa”. Stop there and get on the right. After 5 mins walk you will be at the gate of Cagsawa. The entrance fee is 20 PHP.

When we entered the Cagsawa Ruins Park, it was still cloudy. But we were patient. We explored the ruins of the destroyed town, then just sat down in front of the volcano, patiently waiting for the clouds to reveal Mayon. And it happened. First its foot appeared under the clouds. Then we could gradually see its middle heights. And finally, after 3 hours waiting, we saw its smoking crater, the magnificent top of Mayon Volcano. Our patience was rewarded.

And it was all that we could do to visit Mayon Volcano, because our time in Legazpi was limited. But if you want more of the volcano, you can do two things.

Mayon Volcano behind clouds

ATV trip around Mayon Volcano

It is a popular and very exciting activity. There are several ATV trails on the foot of Mayon Volcano. Some are shorter and cheaper, other trails are longer and penetrate much closer and higher on the volcanic slopes. They are more expensive, because need longer time.

Mayon Volcano hiking

If you want, however, to explore Mayon Volcano at its best, you have to make a Mayon hike. It normally takes two days and can be a serious adventure with high grade of difficulty, requiring some additional hiking gear . But since 2013, now it is prohibited to reach the top of the volcano. Yes, it is a bit disappointing, but it is for safety precautions, after some hikers died on the top.

There is a so-called Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and it is a circle around the top of the volcano with radius of 6 km. You are not allowed to enter PDZ without a licensed guide. So the hikes are possible only with a guide. And the highest point that you can reach, even with a guide, is Camp 2, on 1800 m altitude, if the volcanic forecast from PHIVOLCS allows. This is the situation at least for now. I hope one day the top will be allowed for climbing again, if there could be find a way for safer access than before, but… who knows.

Find a guide for Mayon Volcano hiking

You can ask for a guide in Cagsawa or Lignon Hill. I found the following contacts of guides: Jameel Echaluce Mata and George (+63 0915 762 7169)- seems both of them can be reached on this phone number. According the reviews that I read about them, they are excellent guides, not only with great experience, but also full of knowledge and stories about Mayon Volcano.

We couldn’t climb Mayon Volcano. And we had to leave it. After our Cagsawa trip, we went back to Legazpi Airport, for our flight to Manila. We still enjoyed a great view of the volcano, rising behind the airport and the planes. Then we departed from Legazpi, our plane ascent around the majestic Mayon, until finally it remained as a sharp cone above the clouds and gradually disappeared behind us.

Why the Mayon Volcano Is One of the Top Philippines Tourist Attractions

Aryan Vaidh

Who wouldn’t love to visit comfortably warm places in the winter when much of the country is draped in snow and ice? If you are looking for the perfect travel destination this winter, you can do no better than the Philippines Tourist Attractions, and while you are there, you must tour the Mayon Volcano. Here’s why.

Post Contents

A Picture-Perfect Volcano

Because of its proximity to the city, many people like to pick up a self-drive car rental in Manila and make the drive to Mayon Volcano. Of all the Mayon Volcano tours, you will want a bit of adventure on a guided tour of the volcano riding an ATV in the open air.

This is because you will get to view the mountain as it is meant to be seen. Known as the perfect volcano in the world, the unique symmetry of Mount Mayon is perhaps one of its most fantastic attractions. There isn’t another volcano in the world that is as perfectly symmetrical.

A Great Place for a Photo Op

This picture-perfect symmetry indeed lends itself quite well to a photo op. It’s easy to hop off that ATV, extend the phone’s long arm accessory, and snap away at those single or group selfies.

Don’t worry; you will be warned not to get too close if there is seismic activity in the area.

The Thrill of an Active Volcano

Philippines Tourist Attractions

According to the Britannica website, there have been five eruptions within the past two decades that prompted evacuations of nearby villages on Luzon, the largest of the Philippine islands.

The volcano erupted in 2000, 2006 and 2009 in the first decade of the 21 st century and then again in 2014 and 2018 in the second.

There was plenty of warning each time, so that is not something to be overly concerned with. If you are a thrill seeker who thrives on getting up close and personal with danger, this is your chance!

Camping at Mount Mayon National Park

In 1938, Mayon National Park was established , and to this day, it is one of the leading camping and hiking in the Philippines Tourist Attractions.

You will want to explore this on that ATV guided tour, and perhaps it will hold enough allure for thrill seekers that you might want to spend a couple of nights camping and trekking before returning home.

Easy Access from Legazpi

Getting to Mount Mayon is not difficult because there is an airport in the city of Legazpi, located near the base of the 8,081 ft mountain.

You can choose to begin and end your stay in the Philippines from this airport or arrive in the capital of Manilla, reaching Mayon Volcano by rental car if you prefer. It is easy to arrange because Manilla is also on Luzon, the most prominent island in the archipelago.

You will find that the locals are warm and inviting, and although Spanish is the official language, many also speak English fluently. If you never tour another volcano in your life, Mayon Volcano is one you absolutely must add to your bucket list. When you get there, you’ll see why.

The Girl Behind the Pen

Discovering mayon volcano: beyond the beauty of the stunner and the killer.

Admired for its majestic beauty, Mayon Volcano Natural Park , a famous landmark in the Philippines, never fails to attract travelers across the world. With its beauty and history, one would never dare to miss Mayon when in Bicol. But more than being a beauty that is enough to be admired from afar, you can discover so much more if only you’re brave enough to see beyond the perfect cone-shaped volcano.

About Mayon Volcano

Mayon Volcano is both a stunner and a killer. While it is one of the most beautiful volcanoes in the Philippines, in the world rather, Mount Mayon is also among the most destructive that’s why many people dare to go near it. Its perfect cone shape draws attention all over the world but what lies beyond its beauty is its deadly nature: an enormous chamber, churning with molten rock and toxic gas that could blow anytime.

Carabaos at the foot of Mayon Volcano in Bicol

The Legend of Mayon Volcano

Mayon is the country’s most active volcano and is named after a beautiful princess named Daragang Magayon. She was the daughter of the ruler of Bicol. Darangang Magayon was so beautiful and kind that many young men wanted to marry her. But she was in love with Hadiong. But Hadiong was a warrior of the tribe that was Magayon’s family’s enemy. They were secretly seeing each other and when both of their families found out, they were furious and war between the two tribes started. Hadiong fought in the battle and got killed. When Daragang Magayon heard of Hadiong’s death, it broke her heart. She cried every day until she got sick, and died. Her family and the townspeople buried her with much sadness. But a few months later, the ground where she was buried grew and grew. And after a few hundred years, it became a beautiful volcano now known as Mount Mayon.

Mayon Volcano History

The reflection of Mayon Volcano in the water

After knowing the beautiful legend of Mayon Volcano, it’s time to learn more about its history. The Mayon Volcano is located in Albay Province. It stands at 8,077 feet above sea level.

Mayon Volcano has erupted over 51 times in the past four centuries, the most destructive of which is in 1814 where thousands of families were affected. In spite of everything, Mount Mayon has helped in developing a culture of resiliency among the locals who always rebuilt their towns and cultivated their fields after each destructive eruption.

The Mayon Volcano Natural Park is also among the 17 protected areas in the Bicol Region and home to 156 floral species and 83 species of trees according to UNESCO. It is also a habitat for 104 species of land vertebrates, including 57 species of birds, 10 species of amphibians, 24 species of reptiles, and 13 species of mammals. Of the 13 mammal species, 7 are endemic of which 3 are listed as vulnerable: the  Philippine Brown Deer, Philippine Warty Pig, and Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox. The bird fauna includes 37 endemic species with 3 species listed in the IUCN red list: the nearly-threatened Luzon Bleeding Heart, vulnerable Philippine Eagle-Owl, and critically-endangered Philippine Cockatoo. The 10 amphibian fauna are all endemic frog species with 4 listed in the IUCN red list: the nearly-threatened Luzon Fanged Frog, Luzon Forest Ground Frog, and Guenther’s Forest Frog; and the vulnerable Banded Pygmy Tree Frog. Mount Mayon also houses 1 endemic butterfly, 7 endemic stick-insects, and 9 endemic spiders in the registered insect and arachnid fauna.

Mayon Volcano Natural Park offers a variety of ecotourism activities like the ecological tours, camping, trekking, among others.

10 Tips in Visiting Mayon Volcano 2023: Perfectly Symmetrical Cone Shape

  • February 27, 2023

mayon volcano

Mayon Volcano is an active stratovolcano found in the province of Albay in the Bicol region of the Philippines. It is one of the most well-known and iconic landmarks in the country, known for its perfectly symmetrical cone shape and violent eruptions.

Mayon Volcano stands at 2,462 meters (8,077 feet) above sea level and has a base diameter of around 20 kilometers (12 miles). It is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, with 48 recorded eruptions since the 17th century.

Mayon Volcano stands tall over the region, particularly located in Legazpi City, and provides an amazing backdrop no matter where your location is in Legazpi Province.

Despite its frequent eruptions, Mayon Volcano is also a famous tourist destination because of its stunning views and natural beauty. It is surrounded by lush forests and abundant farmland, and visitors can take a hike up to the crater or view it from various vantage points around the province.

It is believed that the name is derived from “magayon” the Bicolano word that translates to beautiful. This is more than enough to describe how breathtaking this natural landscape is from all angles.

mayon albay flowers

Why is it called Mayon?

Mayon Volcano is named after the legendary princess-heroine Daragang Magayon, who, according to the mythology of the Bicol region, was the daughter of a local chief. The story goes that Magayon was recognized for her beauty and had many suitors, but she fell in love with a warrior named Panganoron from a rival tribe.

However, their love was forbidden by their feuding families, and they eventually died tragically in battle. After their death, it was said that Magayon’s father ordered a great funeral pyre to be built for his daughter, and Panganoron’s body was placed beside hers. The pyre grew into a great mountain, which came to be known as Mayon, after the heroine Magayon.

The legend of Magayon and Panganoron is still widely known and honored in the Bicol region, and Mayon Volcano stays a symbol of their love and the tragic outcomes of their forbidden relationship.

7 Unmissable Things to Do in Albay: Visiting Mayon Volcano

The Philippines might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of heavenly natural scenery. However, our country is home to some truly spectacular natural attractions.

Take our white sandy beaches and limestone islands, for instance. Yet, the beauty of the Philippines doesn’t stop at the coastline. Venture inland, and you’ll find majestic mountains and volcanoes, like Mayon. This volcano, located in the province of Albay, is a natural masterpiece. Its perfect cone shape sets it apart. A unique spectacle.

Mayon Volcano’s distinctive shape is one of the reasons why it’s so famous in the Philippines. But there’s more to it than just its appearance. Visiting Mayon is an experience worth having, and I’ll tell you why.

This post contains affiliate links. I may receive a tiny commission at no additional cost to you.

7 Best Things to Do in Albay: Visiting The Mayon Volcano

Use the table of contents to skip to topics.

One common mistake I’ve noticed among travelers visiting Mayon is their tendency to leave immediately after seeing the mountain. Often, they head straight to the beaches for a quick selfie with Mayon in the background, or they engage in other activities, like food trips, that aren’t directly related to the mountain.

However, I believe there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to travel; it varies from person to person. But if you’re in Albay, there’s so much more you can do to truly appreciate the beauty of Mayon. Especially for those who have traveled a great distance, it’s worth taking the time to fully immerse yourself in the majesty of this mountain.

Some places that let you see Mayon can make your visit even better! There are spots where you can spend time with friends and family, go on exciting adventures, or just relax. You can also try the local food of the Bicolanos while you’re there.

why mayon volcano is a tourist destination

At the time of writing this post, I haven’t been to Mayon. However, I’ve reached out to friends and other travelers who have visited Albay. They were kind enough to share their experiences and tips with me.

I decided to create this blog post because I was looking for advice and ideas for visiting Mayon Volcano. I thought it would be helpful to share this information on the internet. I believe there are others, like you, who could benefit from these tips.

Getting to Mayon Volcano or Legazpi City

First things first: If you’re not from the Philippines, you might be wondering where Mayon Volcano is located. It’s situated on the eastern part of the country in the region known as Bicol Region.

The nearest city to Mayon is Legazpi City, which is the capital of the province of Albay . If you’re coming from Manila, there are currently three ways to reach Mayon Volcano: by plane, by bus, or by driving a ca r.

If you’re not already in the vicinity, say in provinces like Samar or Quezon, getting to Mayon Volcano or Albay is best done by flying or taking the bus. This mode of travel is not only more convenient, but it also saves time and is cost-effective.

Driving through the countryside in the Philippines is an adventure in itself, as my French friend often says. The driving conditions there are not as regulated as you might be used to. So, you might want to think twice before deciding to drive.

You can find the best accommodation deals from here .

Are you pressed for time? If so, air travel is your best bet to reach Legazpi City. Flights from Manila to Legazpi are typically available daily and the journey usually takes less than an hour.

Interestingly, flights are quite affordable, costing only about 10 to 15 dollars more than a bus ride.

Here’s a tip: If you’re planning your trip in advance, keep an eye out for seat sales from local airlines like Cebu Pacific, Air Asia, and Philippine Airlines. These promotions often occur on dates where the day and month digits match, like a 3-3 seat sale on March 3rd.

If you’re a traveler who, like me, enjoys a leisurely journey, a bus ride could be a great option. There are several types of buses to choose from, depending on your budget.

Firstly, there’s the air-conditioned bus, which is the most affordable option. Secondly, there’s an upgraded version of the air-conditioned bus, equipped with a restroom, reclining seats, and extra legroom for added comfort. Lastly, there’s the sleeper bus, perfect for overnight journeys.

Bicol Isarog is the only bus company that offers sleeper buses to the Bicol Region, specifically from Manila to Legazpi.

You can catch these buses at various terminals around Metro Manila, including the Araneta Center bus station, EDSA Cubao, LRT Buendia, EDSA Pasay, PITX in Paranaque, and Alabang.

Do note that the bus ride from Manila to Legazpi typically takes about 10 to 12 hours. Plan accordingly for a comfortable journey.

Here’s a tip for your trip: If you’re a foreigner, I suggest renting a motorbike or a private vehicle when you arrive in Legazpi. Transportation in the Philippines, such as tricycles and jeeps, may not be the most convenient, especially if you’re tall like me.

Importantly, having your own vehicle for getting around Legazpi can be advantageous. It allows you to make the most of your trip, particularly if you’re not comfortable with commuting. However, I do recommend trying out the local tricycles and jeepneys at least once during your trip. It can be a fun and absolutely unique experience.

Things to Do in Legazpi Near Mayon Volcano

One of the great things about visiting Mayon Volcano is the proximity of its amazing tourist attractions. They’re not far from each other and are just a few kilometers away from the city of Legazpi.

In fact, you could visit several attractions around Mayon on your first day in Legazpi if you wish! These include Daraga Church, Mayon Golf Course, Casa Simeon, Tabaco City, Tiwi Pottery, and the Masaraga Volcano camp.

However, if you’re wondering what you shouldn’t miss during your visit to Mayon or how to make your trip unique, I have some recommendations. There are seven attractions and activities that can make your visit memorable.

1. Cagsawa Ruins

Cagsawa-Ruins-Albay-Philippines

When you find yourself in Legazpi, the first place to set foot in is the Cagsawa Ruins. This iconic site, with its breathtaking view, has been captured on countless postcards, long before the advent of smartphones.

Every time I think back to our social studies classes, the image of Cagsawa Ruins is the first that springs to mind. But behind this picturesque scene lies a tale of a tragic past and the formidable power of Mayon Volcano.

In 1814, Mayon Volcano erupted with a violence that buried and obliterated the entire town of Cagsawa. This included the Cagsawa church, a symbol of the town’s faith and community.

Yet, in an amazing twist of fate, the church’s belfry survived the devastation. Today, it stands as a testament to the town’s resilience and has become a popular tourist attraction.

It’s simple. The ruins are situated in Daraga, Albay. From the Legazpi City Grand Terminal, it’s a quick jeepney ride of less than 30 minutes, covering a distance of 8 kilometers.

The site tends to be crowded during weekends, which might not be ideal if you’re looking to capture the perfect shot without any photobombers.

Personally, I prefer visiting either early in the morning or at sunset. These times, often referred to as the ‘Golden Hour’, offer the most stunning light conditions. The sunlight strikes the perfect angle with the ground, making your photos truly epic!

2. Mayon ATV ride

Mayon ATV ride, albay, legazpi, philippines

The Cagsawa Ruins will be a brief stop unless you rent ATVs to explore the area. The ATV rentals, such as MayonSkyDrive ATV Adventure, are just a two-minute walk from the ruins’ tower and volcano view.

From there, you can start an incredible adrenaline rush experience with nature and Mayon. It’s the best way to get a close-up view of the Mayon Volcano.

You can choose between the Green Lava Trail or the Mayon Lava Trail for your ATV adventure. The Green Lava Trail will lead you closer to the Mayon Volcano, up to the 6-kilometer safe radius from the crater. You’ll have fun with river crossings and uphill and downhill tracks in the forest.

On the other hand, the Mayon Lava Trail will offer a more thrilling and exciting experience. With this trail, you’ll follow tracks passing wide rivers, fields of lahar, and hectares of coconut plantations.

The most fantastic part is when you reach the trail’s end. You’ll get an amusing overlooking view of the city, sights of deep gullies, and erupted lava rocks.

The ATV rental service operates from 7 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon.

Book in advance here:

3. Lignon Hill Nature Park

Lignon Hill nature park, Albay, Mayon, Legazpi, Philippines

If you’re a fan of ziplining, Lignon Hill Nature Park is a must-visit. Imagine soaring through the air with a view of Mayon – it’s quite an experience!

Lignon Hill Nature Park isn’t just about the zipline, though. This elevated park offers a variety of activities for a fun-filled day in Legazpi. It’s the perfect spot if you’re looking to see Mount Mayon from a unique perspective or height.

In addition to the zipline, you might also want to try your hand at rappelling. But if you’re looking for a less strenuous adventure, why not take a discovery trip to the observatory, galleries, and view deck?

You could even play a round of mini-golf. And don’t forget to check out the Japanese tunnel – it’s a unique feature of this place.

Lastly, Lignon Hill Nature Park is home to the Mayon Volcano Observatory. This is Phivolcs’ central monitoring station for Mayon Volcano.

For the best experience, consider climbing the hill early in the morning. This way, you can avoid the midday heat. Plus, it’s quite a sight to see the sun cast golden hues on the majestic Mayon at sunrise. The park is open from 8 am to 11 pm daily.

As for getting to Lignon Hill Nature Park, look for any jeepneys that follow Loop 1. These jeepneys circulate around Legazpi city and pass by the jump-off site of Lignon Hill. If you can’t find Loop 1 Jeeps, you can also hire motorcycle cabs, or tricycles, to take you to Lignon Hill.

4. Quintinday Hills

Quitinday hill, mayon, legazpi, albay, philippines

Not far from Legazpi City you’ll find an unforgettable natural destination – Quintinday Hills. In my opinion, a visit to these hills is one of the top things to do in Legazpi. Here, you’ll encounter Albay province’s own version of Bohol’s famous Chocolate Hills.

While they may not appear as grand as Bohol’s hills in photos, the presence of Mount Mayon in the background gives Quintinday Hills a unique charm. This balance of elements creates a captivating landscape.

I first learned about Quitinday Hills during a lunch conversation with my French boss at a cafeteria near our office. He shared a photo of him and his Filipina girlfriend at Quitinday Hills.

The image of them embracing on a hilltop under a sky tinged with hues of gold and pink left me in awe. The romantic moment was certainly a highlight, but the main draw was the combination of Mayon Volcano, the hills, and the dramatic clouds.

Start from the Legazpi City Grand Terminal. Take a jeepney or bus to Camalig and get off at Quitinday Junction/Diversion Road. Once you reach the junction, hire a motorcycle cab, also known as a “tricycle”, for a round trip to Quintinday Hills.

As an alternative, you could rent a four-wheeled motorcycle. This allows you to drive yourself via the Cotmon-Solong-Calabidongan and Baligang-Caguiba routes to the hills.

I recommend going in the morning when the heat is not too intense. If you’re interested in photography, aim to be there during the golden hour, which is from 4:30 until sunset. The angle of the sunlight during this time creates beautiful shadows on the hills, making for some stunning photos.

5. FarmPlate

Farm plate, mayon, legazpi, philippines

If you’re seeking a tranquil retreat near Legazpi City, consider visiting Farm Plate. This location offers the opportunity to go camping with your family or friends. You can enjoy a bonfire and there’s a playground for children.

Farm Plate is an ideal spot to unwind near Mayon. You can relax and watch the sunset by a small lake. It’s a peaceful experience that shouldn’t be missed.

For children, Farm Plate offers plenty of activities. They can ride bikes, fly kites, and learn about local traditions. One such tradition is the carabao cart ride, a method used by Filipinos in the past to transport people and goods from farms. It’s a fun way to immerse kids into adventure and a little bit of history.

If you’re in Legazpi or Daraga, you can easily hire a tricycle to take you there. As per their Facebook page, if you start your journey from Caltex Daraga, a tricycle ride for three people costs only 30 to 50 pesos per person.

As for the best time to visit, FarmPlate is open from 8am to 9pm from Monday to Thursday, and from 8am to 10pm from Friday to Sunday. It’s a good idea to plan your visit to coincide with sunset. Spending the evening there can be a delightful experience. Picture this: you’re sitting around a bonfire, enjoying dinner with your loved ones, all under the beautiful evening sky.

6. Sumlang Lake

Sumlang lake, mayon, legazpi, philippines

Sumlang Lake is the place where those stunning mirror images of Mayon Volcano are captured. It’s a tranquil spot where you can unwind and appreciate the beauty of Mayon from a raft. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature, a visit to Sumlang Lake is a fantastic choice.

In addition to rafts, the lake offers other rental options. You can choose from kayaks, aqua bikes, or even floating cottages.

For photography enthusiasts, the lake presents a unique opportunity. The shimmering waters and, at times, mirror-like surface of the lake create a beautiful reflection of Mayon Volcano.

If you’re commuting from Legazpi City, start by taking a tricycle ride to Bañag. Once there, look for jeepneys with a “Polangui” sign. Board one of these jeepneys and get off at the intersection before Albay Agri Ethno Eco Village. From there, you can either hire a tricycle or walk to Sumlang Lake.

As for when to visit, Sumlang Lake is open from 8 am to 6 pm from Monday to Thursday, and from 6:30 am to 6 pm from Friday to Sunday. The lake can get quite crowded on weekends, so you might want to consider visiting on a weekday instead. This way, you can avoid the peak tourist times and enjoy a more relaxed visit.

7. Legazpi Boulevard

Legazpi Boulevard, Legazpi, Albay, Mayon, Philippines

To round off your trip around Mayon Volcano, consider a visit to Legazpi Boulevard. You could even take a photo with the large “LEGAZPI” sign. Of course, that’s entirely up to you!

On a more serious note, Legazpi Boulevard is a great spot to connect with the locals. It’s also an ideal location to watch the sun set behind Mayon Volcano, all while listening to the soothing sound of waves crashing nearby.

When to Visit Mayon Volcano & Bicol Region

As you may already know, a trip to Albay wouldn’t be complete without a glimpse of Mayon. While Mayon Volcano is always in Albay, it’s not always visible. There are times when clouds obscure Mayon, preventing visitors from fully appreciating its majestic form.

So, before you plan your visit to Mayon and Albay, consider the time of year. The Bicol Region experiences less rainfall during the dry season, which typically starts in March and ends in May. This is the best time to explore the region.

You might also want to time your visit to coincide with the vibrant Bicolano festivals. These colorful and lively events add a unique cultural dimension to your trip. You’ll learn more about them as we go on.

By the way, if you’re planning a trip to the Philippines, I can recommend visiting the places I’ve visited. These destinations offer a mix of adventure and breathtaking scenery. They might even help you discover new perspectives:

  • Cebu : Known as the adventure capital of the Philippines.
  • Sagada : A mystical town nestled in the mountains of northern Philippines.
  • Maligcong : Home to some of the most beautiful rice terraces in the Philippines.
  • Mount Pulag : Considered the most beautiful mountain in the Philippines, it offers a stunning view of a sea of clouds and a glimpse of what could be described as heaven on earth.

Festivals To Watch While Visiting Mayon Volcano or Bicol

Hundreds of festivals and fiestas happen in the Philippines all year round. There are 19 festivals in the province of Albay alone! But here are the ones that really got my attention:

1. Magayon Festival

The Magayon Festival is a yearly, month-long celebration that is both colorful and lively. It honors the bounty and beauty of the province of Albay. The festival is derived from the legend of Daragang Magayon, whose death gave birth to the majestic Mount Mayon.

At first, I could not believe it was a month-long celebration! That’s epic! In our town in Batangas, our celebration only lasts for two days.

The festival becomes more fantastic when you witness the actual events. The activities during the Magayon Festival are endless! Visitors may see local product exhibitions, workshops, float parades, fireworks displays, concerts, and live bands.

You may also watch drum and lyre competitions, sports tournaments, colorful dance competitions, dance recitals, and job fairs. There are also paragliding experiences, dog marathons, beauty pageants, bodybuilders competitions, and the grand SantaCruzan!

The Magayon Festival occurs every May.

2. Cagsawa Festival

Here’s the corrected paragraph, broken down into shorter paragraphs:

The Cagsawa Festival is another month-long celebration in Albay. It celebrates the strength and resiliency of the Albayanons. The Cagsawa Festival takes place every February. Although the celebration begins on February 1, most events occur during the third and fourth weeks of February.

3. Ibalong Festival

Like most of the festivals in Albay, the Ibalong Festival features lively synchronized dance parades with vibrant costumes. It is based on the story of Ibalon and three other legendary heroes who destroyed the monsters terrorizing the town and saved the villages from great floods.

The Ibalong Festival is one of the most sociable events in the Philippines. It serves as a way for the Bikolanos to express their hospitality to tourists. During the festival, Bikolanos not only invite visitors to watch the festival but also encourage them to participate!

Aside from dance parades, you can also watch fireworks and festival musical performances. Additionally, you can watch a drag race show during the Ibalong Festival.

When I started looking for places near Mayon, I didn’t know which was the best. There’s no list on the internet that says which place tourists like most. It was hard to choose.

I picked seven places near Mayon Volcano because I think they’re worth visiting. I hope these places will help you learn new things, have fun adventures, and feel excited.

Hopefully, the places on my list gave you ideas for romantic spots or places to hang out with your friends and family. That’s all! Enjoy with your travels.

A trip to Albay isn’t complete without visiting Cagsawa Ruins, the remnants of an eruption of Mayon Volcano in the past. Located in Daraga, this former Franciscan church was built in 1587 but was buried by the volcano’s eruption in 1814. Today, the surviving belfry has become a landmark and tells a story of resilience amidst catastrophe.

This spot offers a unique backdrop for photos, blending history and natural beauty with Mayon Volcano often visible in clear weather. Don’t miss out on the local handicrafts sold by vendors surrounding the site, as well as Bicol delicacies such as sili ice cream, pili, and more.

Built on top of a hill in the 18th century by Franciscan missionaries, the church offers a panoramic view of the Mayon Volcano. The church’s façade is an exquisite showcase of intricate stone carvings and elaborate baroque architecture. Inside, visitors are greeted by a calming ambiance, beautiful religious art, and stunning stained glass windows.

Quitinday Hills - one of the best attractions in Albay Province

For nature lovers, the Quitinday Hills is a must-visit destination in Albay. This exhilarating tourist spot is comprised of numerous rolling hills, mirroring the iconic Chocolate Hills of Bohol, and offers a stunning view of Mayon Volcano.

Traversing to one of the hills is easy as it only takes half an hour, with the reward of breathtaking panoramic views and picture-perfect moments at the summit. The best time to go here is before sunrise or before sunset for the views.

Cagraray Eco-Energy Park is one of the most popular Bacacay Albay tourist spots. Spanning 110 hectares, it is the first ecological park in Albay Province, ideal for those who are looking for a blend of adventure and relaxation.

The eco-park’s centerpiece is the amphitheater, a majestic structure inspired by the grandeur of Roman architecture, with the view of the ocean at the background. There is also a chapel that you can visit.

Prior to the pandemic, the eco-park also offers various activities such as wall climbing, rappelling, ziplining, horseback riding, and more. However, as of this writing (October 2023) these activities have not resumed yet. That saying, you can still visit the park for photos.

This cave has interesting history . It is said to be around as early as 3,000 B.C. to 4,000 B.C. Mayon Volcano tours like Mayon ATV rides are recommended to be done in the morning for a higher chance of a clear view of Mayon Volcano. Do note however that an unobstructed view of Mayon Volcano isn’t guaranteed even on sunny days during Legazpi tours .

The province of Albay, Bicol, has a rich heritage and culture that is evident in its many festivals. When planning an Albay travel itinerary, it’s best to plan around these notable annual festivals in the province for an enjoyable experience:

Magayon Festival in Albay (May) - A month-long colorful festival in the province of Albay to honor the beauty of Mayon Volcano. Magayon translates to “always beautiful to look at.” One of the festival’s highlight events is the retelling of the Mayon Volcano legend called “Daragang Magayon” (Beautiful Maiden).

Cagsawa Festival in Daraga, Albay (February) - This month-long festival celebrates the resiliency of Albayanos and not the horrors of the disasters that the province has been through over the years. This festival kicks off at Cagsawa Ruins, a reminder of one of the deadliest eruptions of Mayon Volcano and now one of the top attractions of Albay.

Ibalong Festival in Legazpi, Albay (August) - A non-religious festival in the city of Legazpi that is based on the Ibalong epic. This week-long festival showcases street parades with locals wearing masks and costumes to imitate the heroes and villains of the Bicolano story.

The highest average temperature in Albay is 32 degrees Celsius usually from April to June. The lowest average temperature in Albay is 27 to 29 degrees Celsius in the months of December to February. The wettest months in Albay are usually around November to December.

Albay has been given the nickname the “Vatican of Disasters” of the Philippines. Due to its geographical location, the province is plagued with various weather and natural calamities such as typhoons, landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
