Cruise Port Guide Tangier – Morocco: docked

The cruise ships dock at the port of Tangier. This dock are about 1,5 km away from the old Medina or city centre. This is about 20 minute walk from the ship. Most often the ships do not provide a shuttle service into town, but check this information with the front office on board. The facilities on the dock are limited. There is no tourist information, no maps, no hop on hop off bus and no wi-fi at the port. There are limited forms of transportation to find in Tangier. Expect that taxis will be plentiful but local transportation is limited. Walking to town is easy and the only way to explore the Medina is by foot. However, if you want to go further afield, we recommend a organised tour or perhaps a taxi tour. Taxis are available at about a ship length walk. Expect that a ride to the city will cost you about 5 euro.  Taxi tours run for about 10 euro per hour. Taxis will take Dirham (local currency), Euro and US dollars.

Destination and distance

Tangier Medina = 1,5 km to the west

Caves of Hercules = 19 km west of the port

Cap Spartel = 13 km west of the port

Asilah = 47 km south of the port

Tetouan – 60 km south east of the port

This is without doubt the most fascinating part of the city. It is overflowing with food stalls and vendors. They sell anything from spices, textiles, flowers to souvenirs. The Medina is quite big and it is easy to get lost in for the fact that it is one gigantic maze. Lots of locals are willing to tour you around the Medina. Feel free to say no.

Petit Socco or “Little square” is in the middle of the Medina. It was one one of the greatest souks in all of Morocco. People would come here from miles around to buy food an clothes. In the 19th century the area grew wealthier and in the beginning of the 20th century many prominent men would come here to catch up on their gossip. Ville Nouveau is the part of town that nowadays own that position, but Petit Socco is still a nice square to hang around for a cup of tea or coffee and to befriend a stranger or two.

Grand taxis: In Tangier you have two different type of taxis. The grand and the petit taxi. The grand taxi you will recognise because they are usually beige Mercedes sedans. These are the taxis that can take you for a tour around the area. Make sure to negotiate before you step in. Petit taxis: The smaller (and cheaper) taxis you will recognise by the blue color like you see on this picture. Keep in mind these taxis are not allowed to leave the city. When you want to take a ride within the city this taxi is perfect, but when you want to take a tour to get to other cities you will need to take a grand taxi.

11 Awesome Things to Do in Tangier Morocco Near the Cruise Port

11 Awesome Things to Do in Tangier Morocco Near the Cruise Port

Are you taking a day trip to Tangier by cruise ship or ferry? Here are eleven awesome things to do in Tangier, Morocco!

Whether you call it Tangier or Tanger (some people even call it Tangiers), this lovely port city at the northern tip of Morocco has so much to offer.

The city of Tangier is a great place to get a taste of North Africa, so unsurprisingly it’s an incredibly popular tourist destination. You can reach Tangier Ville port , just steps from the lively city, via cruise ship or a short ferry trip from Tarifa, Spain.

Located on the Strait of Gibraltar where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, the Moroccan city has long been a haven for artists and writers due to its fascinating mix of cultures.

Even if you only have the chance to see Tangier on a day trip or weekend city break, you can absolutely fit in lots of the must-dos in Tangier during your visit.

Find out all about the best things to do in Tangier within walking distance of the ferry and cruise port!

1. Explore the Caves of Hercules

Not far from Tanger Ville port by taxi or bus are the fabled Caves of Hercules , where ancient Greek and Roman mythology said the hero slept before embarking on his quest to steal golden apples from the nearby Hesperides Garden.

The caves are partly natural and partly man-made, formed via erosion as well as from human excavation. Archaeologists believe that the Phoenicians created the keyhole opening that faces the sea, known as the “Map of Africa” due to its shape.

cruise ships in tangier

Berber tribespeople also opened up parts of the cave complex in more modern times, cutting into the rock walls and ceilings to make millstones.

The Hercules Caves have been a popular tourist attraction in Tangier since they opened to the public in the 1920s. In 1952, the Moroccan government declared the caves a National Heritage site.

2. Sip a glass of traditional Moroccan mint tea

Made from green tea, fresh mint leaves, and copious amounts of sugar, mint tea is the national drink of Morocco. You’ll see it everywhere in Tangier, and you need to try it (even if you’re not usually a tea drinker).

cruise ships in tangier

You can order mint tea at practically every restaurant. In fact, if you just order “tea”, this is what you’ll get! If your server pours your tea at the table, don’t be surprised if they hold the teapot up super-high. It’s considered a sign of welcome and respect!

Tip: If you don’t like your tea to be overwhelmingly sugary, just ask for it to be made with less sugar. They won’t be offended! Many waiters actually asked me if I wanted my mint tea less sugary before I had a chance to request it.

3. Visit the American Legation Museum

If you’re visiting Tangier from the United States, you won’t want to miss spending an hour or two at the gorgeous American Legation Museum . It’s the only US National Historic Landmark located in a foreign country!

Ties between the US and Morocco go way back, as Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah recognized American independence from Great Britain on December 20, 1777. Morocco was the very first country to do this.

cruise ships in tangier

The building that now houses the museum was given by the sultan to the US government as a diplomatic post, and that’s how it was used for the next 140 years. Since 1976, the building has served as a cultural center, museum, and research library.

The American Legation Museum features several stories full of artwork, furnishings, and memorabilia focusing on the history and ties between the two countries. There’s also a fascinating exhibit on the American expat writer and composer Paul Bowles, who lived in Tangier for over 50 years.

4. Relax on the beach

Tangier offers some beautiful beaches, and Tangier Beach (known locally as Plage Municipale) is within walking distance of the cruise and ferry port. A 25-minute stroll along the waterfront will land you at a gorgeous stretch of sand with views across the water to the southern coast of Spain!

cruise ships in tangier

In the summer, Tangier Beach is hopping with activity. But it’s large enough to not feel crowded, even with lots of local families, teens, and tourists enjoying a day on the shore. This area also features lots of restaurants, beach clubs, shops, and nightlife right by the beach.

In the off-season, the beach is far more sedate—the beach clubs and many of the restaurants close for the winter. But Plage Municipale is still a great place to relax in the sand, or even to enjoy a horseback or camel ride by the water!

Tip: Although it’s a good idea to dress conservatively while walking around Tangier, you can absolutely wear a swimsuit on the beach! Consider choosing a style with a bit more coverage, and pack a swim cover-up for beach strolling.

5. Sample the best couscous

If you love Moroccan food, you’re in for a treat in Tangier. Not only will you find excellent tagines (the delicious stew made in a conical-lidded pot) all around the city, but the couscous is also to-die-for.

But the very best couscous I found in Tangier was at the tiny, nondescript Restaurant Ahlen . Located across from the Hotel Mamora Bay at the entrance to the Old Medina of Tangier, the restaurant features a shockingly inexpensive menu of French and Moroccan fare.

cruise ships in tangier

You can choose from couscous with lamb, beef, chicken, or a veggie version. Each features a generous portion of delicately spiced couscous, root veggies, and golden raisins. Your meal also includes an appetizer of fresh crusty bread, cheese, and olives, and finishes with a tasty Moroccan pastry. Bring your appetite!

Tip: In Morocco, families traditionally gather on Fridays to pray together and enjoy a meal of couscous. So if you visit Tangier on a Friday, it’s a great time to savor this favorite Moroccan dish!

6. Snag a bargain at the souks

Tangier is famous for its souks or open-air marketplaces, and you can find just about any Moroccan souvenir your heart desires with just a bit of searching.

The city features two main souks: the Petit Socco and the Grand Socco . I found that the area around Place Petit Socco tends to be super touristy (especially when cruise ships are in port). But wander through the twisty streets and you’ll soon find where the locals shop. With some luck and negotiation skills you can score amazing bargains.

cruise ships in tangier

With offerings at the souks ranging from leather goods to spices, pretty cooking tagines to rugs, you might want to pack an extra suitcase to tote home all of your treasures!

Prices generally aren’t marked, so when you ask the vendor the cost of an item that’s the starting point. A bit of friendly haggling is expected, but don’t start the process if you don’t really want to buy!

Tip: I’ve had excellent luck negotiating in Tangier’s souks by buying multiple items from a single vendor. Speaking the language (either Arabic or French) helps a lot too!

7. Ride a camel

Tangier is located hundreds of miles from the desert, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have plenty of opportunity to ride a camel during your visit!

Your best bet to find a camel-riding experience is by heading out to the beach. Both Plage Municipale near Tanger Ville port and Achakkar Beach (on the Atlantic coast between Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules) offer short camel experiences for a very reasonable fee.

cruise ships in tangier

I paid 100 dirhams (about $9 US) for a 10-minute sunset ride at Achakkar Beach. If you’ve never sat atop a camel before, it’s much less scary (and a lot more comfortable) than it might look!

8. Try some fresh-pressed pomegranate juice

Morocco grows a lot of pomegranates, and a tall glass of freshly-pressed pomegranate juice is one of the yummiest treats to enjoy in Tangier. You know it’s fresh when they hand-press it right in front of you!

cruise ships in tangier

My favorite place to enjoy fresh pomegranate juice in Tangier is at a tiny juice stand with cafĂ©-style seating on Bab Dar Dbagh . The friendly owner, Abdul Rahim, has been welcoming guests from around the world for over a decade with a smile and conversation—he speaks Arabic, English, French, Spanish, and even Japanese!

9. Ride the HOHO bus around the city

Starting its route right at Tanger Ville port, Tangier’s hop-on-hop-off bus (or HOHO for short) is the easiest way to get a taste of the city. Plus, the cost of tickets is far less expensive than HOHO buses in many other cities.

The hop-on-hop-off buses in Tangier offer two routes included in your ticket: a historic tour that shows you the heart of the city in an hour-long loop, and an Espartel tour exploring the outskirts including the Caves of Hercules and the beautiful Cap Spartel.

cruise ships in tangier

Disclaimer: I may receive a small commission when you make a purchase from a link on this site, at no added charge to you. For more info, please read my  Disclosure Policy .

Whether you choose to use the HOHO bus simply as a guided tour (you can listen to a fascinating narration in your choice of eight languages) or as a means of getting around Tangier, it’s a great budget alternative to pricey shore excursions in port.

Tip: Buy your HOHO bus tickets online . When I visited, the employees at the ticket kiosk told all of the walkup passengers that there wasn’t room for them on any of the buses departing that morning. But they always set aside space for online ticketholders, so I was able to hop on the first bus of the day!

10. Sample some Moroccan wine

You might not think of Morocco as being a hot spot for wine, especially as the predominantly-Muslim country bans its citizens from drinking alcohol in public. But Morocco makes some excellent wines, and visitors to the country are exempt from the ban.

Although most restaurants in Tangier don’t serve alcohol at all, some do (just check the menu before going in or ask the staff). You may have a rare chance to sample some Moroccan wine!

The country produces about 40 million bottles of wine annually , but only about 5 percent of that is exported.

cruise ships in tangier

Winemaking began here during Phoenician times, but the tradition was lost during the 7th century due to religious bans on alcohol. Colonization by the French brought wineries back, and by the early 1950s Morocco was one of the world’s largest wine exporters.

Once the country gained independence in 1956, the vineyards were again abandoned, but the industry began another resurgence in the ’90s. Today you’ll mainly find local red wines in Morocco—Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot are the most popular. But the country also produces whites, rosĂ©s, and Vin Gris.

Tip: Want to bring some Moroccan wine home with you? Some larger supermarkets in Tangier, including Carrefour, do sell bottles of wine. But you might have to ask an employee to find it!

11. Watch the sunset at Cap Spartel

Cap Spartel (or Cape Spartel in English) is the most northwestern point in mainland Africa. Not far from the Caves of Hercules, this beautiful spot where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean is known as one of the best places to watch the sunset in Tangier .

cruise ships in tangier

If you visit, plan to spend at least 30 minutes touring the small museum in the historic 1864 lighthouse, the oldest in Morocco, perched high on a cliff. Climb its spiral staircase to the observation deck to enjoy unmatched views of the rugged coastline and far out to sea.

Watch the sun set over the water right from this lofty viewpoint, or head over to Achakkar Beach just down the coast to enjoy the sunset with your toes in the sand.

Top-rated shore excursions and guided tours in Tangier

Although you can easily see a lot of Tangier’s highlights by walking around from Tanger Ville port (or by taking a taxi or bus), you might want to maximize your time by joining a tour group or hiring a private guide.

Here are some of the top-rated tours of Tangier that start right at or near the port:

  • Tangier City Sightseeing Shore Excursion
  • Tangier Full-Day Grand Private Tour
  • Tangier Half-Day Guided City Tour
  • Tangier: City Highlights Discovery Tour

My quick tips for spending an amazing day in Tangier

  • Brush up on your French! Even if you don’t speak Arabic, you can get around Tangier just fine with basic French. Don’t expect everyone to speak English.
  • Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes for the city’s uneven, hilly streets.
  • Take the local currency (Moroccan dirhams) in smaller bills. Many vendors and restaurants are cash-only.
  • Watch for scams! Most Moroccans are very friendly and welcoming to tourists, but just like in any city there will be some scammers.
  • Leave valuable jewelry at home (or in a safe) to avoid being a target.
  • Avoid drinking the tap water in Tangier (including ice) to prevent tummy troubles.
  • Choose your clothing to respect the local culture. Avoid clothes that are short, low-cut, strappy, or show too much skin.

Monthly Climate Averages for Tanger Morocco

Sightseeing:

Tanger is a Cruise Port in it's own right, rather than a gateway to other cities.

Tangier, known as the "gateway to Africa", is one of the most vibrant, mysterious and intriguing cities in Morocco. Located 60 kilometers from Gibraltar and just 14 kilometers from Spain, it's not entirely Moroccan, European or African; it's a dynamic mix of all three... It has a strong international flavor along with a reputation for inspiring shady deals and attracting foreign misfits. Over the years,Tangier has been home to various international playboys, along with many artists, writers and all kinds of adventurers. Truman Capote described Tangier as the "Ragamuffin city".

Tanger's medina (near the harbor) is fascinating, and is still in very good condition. The narrow winding streets are lined with houses of all kinds of styles, indicating that people from with various financial backgrounds both lived and worked here. In Tangier, the Medina itself is quite big. There are many commercial centers too, mostly aimed at tourists. It can be quite difficult to find areas where real handicraft is performed.

The Kasbah : it was built on the highest point in Tangier and has excellent views out over the Straits of Gibraltar and neighboring Spain. There aren't many places where you can see two continents at once.

The Grand Socco really is the heart of Tangier and a good place to start a tour since it is also the point where the modern city's streets are forced to continue into the narrow streets of the old city.

Dar el Makhzen : A collection of art from all over Morocco is housed in the imposing Dar el Makhzen, the former Sultan's palace dating from the 17th century, which dominates the Tangier kasbah.

The Tangier American Legation Museum (TALM), a thriving cultural center, museum, conference center and library in the heart of the old medina in Tangier, is housed in the only historic landmark of the United States located abroad.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

No commercial excursion companies operate near de port.

Walking to the Medina and exploring the city from there is your best bet, it is difficult to get lost as you will see the harbor almost from any point.

Note: the streets and alleys are pretty steep and paved with cobble stones.

A good way yo get to know the city is to take the hop on hop off bus . Take the shuttle bus from your ship to the town drop off. Walk back towards the ship, cross the multi-lane road to find a roadside red kiosk where the HOHO tickets are on sale.

A suggestion for visiting the Kasbah and Medina without a strenuous long uphill climb: take the blue route HOHO bus to Stop 2 (Plaza 9 April) and then stroll downhill through the old town and Medina.  There is an unmissable large covered market just off Plaza 9 April.

Taxis are a good and not expensive way to take a tour, about 15 Euro an hour.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

The Caves of Hercules , located just 14kms west of Tangier, are a place of stunning natural beauty and great archaeological significance.

Apparently, this is where the mythical figure, Hercules, used to rest after finishing his 12 labors. The mouths of the caves open up onto the Atlantic and are flooded at high tide. When the tide comes in, water gushes up through these massive holes in the ground and hillside. It's very impressive.

Shopping and Food

The Kasbah, on the highest point of the medina, is a hive of activities with local craftsmen practicing the traditional arts of carpet weaving, leather working and pottery making and you can buy the products over a glass of mint tea.

For a drink or lunch go to the Hotel Continental: a vast, white 19th century building, overlooking the harbor.

Traditional foods in Tangier consist of couscous, Tajines, Pastilla, Brouchettes and Harira amongst others. You'll find these dishes in most restaurants.

Couscous - Morocco is synonymous with couscous and Tangier is no exception. It's considered a specialty. If you are in a restaurant you will have to order it a bit in advance, in order for it to be prepared properly. It comes with a variety of vegetable and meat toppings, normally chicken, mutton and roast vegetables.

Mint tea: Moroccan tea is popular with locals, it contains tea leaves, lots of sugar and stuffed with local mint, really tasty and surprisingly refreshing.

Moroccan Dirham (MAD). This currency is divided into 100 centimes.

It is forbidden to export Moroccan money and it is not possible to exchange it; therefore you should try and spend all your local money before you leave.

There are no restrictions on the amounts of foreign currencies imported. There are banknotes of 10, 50, 100 and 200 DH. In the cities banks have cash points and they are open between 8 and 11,30 a.m. and between 2 and 4,30 p.m. In the summer they sometimes don't close at lunchtime.

Most hotels, restaurants and antique shops accept credit cards.

Communication:

The languages are Arabic and Berber, however most people also speak French.

Cafes which offer free WiFi for customers are open late and are numerous and charge very reasonable fees. The keyboards look international but are not! You will have to ask for assistance.

emergency phone numbers: Police: 19; Fire Service: 15.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

The biggest event on the Moroccan calendar is the month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast during the daytime and feast at night. Most restaurants are closed for lunch (with the exception of those catering specifically to tourists) and things generally slow down. Traveling during this time is entirely possible, and the restrictions don't apply to non-Muslims, but it's respectful to refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public during the fast.

Tangier Cruise Ship Schedule For 2024

I've traveled on all 5 Disney cruise ships. I have 2 clear favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to book again.

  • My family and I have been on nine Disney cruises and all five ships.
  • We love the fleet's two smallest ships, Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.
  • Although we had a great experience on board Disney Wish , it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

Insider Today

I've been on nine Disney cruises with my husband and two teenage sons. Although we've sailed on other cruise lines like Carnival, Celebrity, MSC, and Royal Caribbean , Disney Cruise Line is always our top pick.

Stellar service, subtle theming, top-notch kids and teen programs, and a dreamy private island in the Bahamas are some of the reasons we keep returning.

So far, we've been on all five Disney Cruise Line ships — Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. However, we'll soon have more ships to explore, with Disney Treasure planning to set sail in December and Disney Destiny set to embark on its maiden voyage in 2025 .

Out of the five ships we've been on, two stand out as favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to travel on again.

My favorite ships are Disney Wonder and Disney Magic

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic are my favorite ships within Disney Cruise Line.

They have nearly identical deck layouts and are the fleet's two smallest ships. Although some may see this as a negative, I prefer the smaller, more intimate size and the ease of getting around the ships.

Disney Wonder also has my favorite Disney Cruise Line restaurant, Tiana's Place. It offers a delicious, Cajun-inspired menu and a fun "The Princess and the Frog" theme. There's even a lively floor show with jazz music.

Related stories

I love Disney Magic , too, but I thought it was more dated and in need of an update than Disney Wonder.

I also didn't love the Magic's Rapunzel-themed restaurant nearly as much as I loved Tiana's Place.

The food at Rapunzel's Royal Table was just so-so, but the entertainment and theming more than made up for it. The in-person appearance of Rapunzel and Flynn, capped by a lantern processional to the tune of "I See the Light," was glorious.

Although Disney Wish was great, it was my least favorite ship to travel on

Although I had a great experience on board Disney Wish, it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

The Wish is unarguably beautiful — everything is sparkling new, and the atrium is decked out with a life-sized Cinderella sculpture. However, I thought the layout was a little clunky.

I may have felt this way because many of Disney's ships are laid out very similarly, and after nine cruises, we're pros at finding our way around.

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic have nearly identical deck layouts, as do Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Disney Wish, however, is laid out much differently.

Unlike the other Disney cruise ships we've been on, Disney Wish doesn't have a specific area for adults-only lounges.

Instead, the adults-only bars and lounges, which are off-limits to kids after 7 p.m., are scattered throughout the ship. This means the Wish doesn't have that true kid-free haven that the other ships have.

I also found that many parts of the ship felt crowded, from the dining rooms to the pools.

For all that criticism, my family and I enjoyed sailing on Disney Wish . But now that we've crossed it off our list, we won't be in any hurry to jump on board again unless the route is one we can't pass up.

River Cruise Ship Evacuated, Danube Shut Down Amid Historic Flooding

high waters on the danube river in budapest hungary in 2023

Around 140 passenger were evacuated from an as-yet-unidentified river cruise ship on the Danube River in Southern Germany early this week. Simultaneously, Austria has shut the river down to all traffic. This amidst historic flooding that led Germany to declare a state of emergency on Monday.

According to reports passengers from the United States, the U.K., and Australia were removed from the ship, which had been stuck in place since Sunday.

Rain has been heavy for several days in southern Germany, with some regions – particularly Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg – experiencing heavy flooding. Several people have died, including a firefighter involved in rescuing a family, MSN reported .

According to DPA International , Austria shut down the entire 350 kilometer course of the Danube within its borders between the border cities of Passau in Germany and Bratislava in Slovakia. The closure, the report stated, forced "some cruise ships" to dock in Linz. The Danube burst the banks in Linz on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the state waterway company, Via Donau , said "Safety cannot be guaranteed above a certain water level."

Hungary is also expecting trouble, with the mayor of Budapest issuing a flood alert (first-degree, lowest level) on Tuesday. The lower embankment of the river in Budapest is expected to close to traffic from 8 p.m. on Thursday.

TMR reached out to river cruise lines to find out how their sailings have been impacted. At least one -- Avalon Waterways -- has already made the decision to cancel two sailings.

"The Danube is experiencing higher-than-average water levels, due to an unprecedented amount of rain in the last month. This week, we made the decision to cancel two cruises on the lower Danube, due to ship access and availability," Pam Hoffee, president of Avalon Waterways, told TMR.

The canceled sailings are the June 7 Balkan Discovery sailing and the June 13 Active & Discovery on the Lower Danube departure.

"For both, we provided cruisers – and their travel advisors – options, recognizing the inconvenience" Hoffee said. "Other cruises departing this week on the upper Danube are experiencing itinerary deviations. Our operations team is constantly monitoring the situation and making any necessary updates to accommodate the conditions while ensuring the best possible experience for our guests."

Viking directed TMR to its website and the following statement: "Currently, sections of the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers are experiencing high water levels. To varying degrees, these conditions may affect select itineraries. Our Switzerland-based nautical team is continually monitoring the situation and will make any necessary adjustments to accommodate the conditions. Guests and their Travel Advisors will continue to be notified directly if we think that their itinerary might be impacted."

Tangier Cruise Port Guide

Tangier is an art and architecture paradise with relics and buildings from the Moorish, Spanish, and French periods in nearly every corner of the city. It is truly a royal city with many of its most important buildings stemming from Sultanic rule, and colonial conquests. The “medina”, or old town, is Tangier’s main draw for visitors looking to experience an authentic taste of local Moroccan culture.

From tea and spice markets to Moroccan haute cuisine, caves, museums, and preserved fortresses from centuries past, Tangiers has a great deal to offer. A cruise to Tangier is a great way to discover a cultural history unique to Morocco and much of the region. It’s a place where 20th-century artists once flocked to in droves to create some of their most iconic works. This majestic city is known as “The Door of Africa”, and the beating heart connecting two worlds. This is a can’t-miss destination, and one that will show you its bustling, cultural, and cosmopolitan sides all in one stop.

The term “medina” in North African Arabic culture refers to the old town section of a city. Tangier’s medina is magical, and a true treat for travelers looking for an authentic, preserved, and still-lively cultural experience. In the medina, drink fresh mint tea with locals at the Petit Socco square. Then wander the tangle of narrow streets, where many of the whitewashed houses are adorned in brilliant shades of blue. Don’t miss the Tomb of Tangier, or artisan market shopping for unforgettable leather goods, jewelry, and hand-woven rugs to take home with you from any of our cruises to Tangier.

Cape Spartel/Caves of Hercules

The Caves of Hercules are located just west of Tangiers on the historic Cape Spartel, located just nine miles outside of the city. The Cape Spartel area was made famous by the Phoenicians, and later as the summer residence of the King of Morocco. The caves are steeped in legend, and are believed to be where the Roman God Hercules rested, hence its name. Walk through a guided tour of the natural and man-made cave sections and see the impressively detailed “Map of Africa” sea gate, carved into the rock by the Phoenicians to resemble the African continent.

Tangier Kasbah

As part of your incredible cruise to Tangier, you can’t miss a trip to the famous Kasbah. This walled fortress, made mostly of intricately crafted limestone, has withstood over 400 years of battles and conquests, and now tourism. The royal fortress is like a city in itself, with palatial patios, hand-carved wooden ceilings, and artifacts that date back to the 1700s. End your visit with a guided tour of the Kasbah museum, where you’ll learn about the many Moroccan sultans who once called it home.

Things to do in tangier, explore ville nouvelle.

Classic French cafĂ© culture abounds in this quaint, lively, little French neighborhood made iconic by some of the world’s most influential artists, writers, and poets of the 20th century. This area truly captures the unique blend of Tangiers’ colonial past, with a modern chic vibe that is sure to delight the senses. Sip cafĂ© au lait, or a tasty Moroccan mint tea. Shop for hand-made gifts and antiques on Rue Magellan, where William S. Burroughs wrote “Naked Lunch”. Dine at one of the city’s famous French-inspired Moroccan restaurants on the luxurious Boulevard Pasteur before boarding your ship.

Day Trip to Chefchaouen

At first glance of the blue walls of the terracotta-tiled houses that line the entire village of Chefchaouen, a pretty village nestled in the Rif mountains, you’ll feel like you’re in a dream. Chefchaouen is a visually stunning city, known as the “Blue Pearl” for its colorful facades, re-painted each year to keep their shine. Take a day trip tour here to learn about its history in both ancient culture and modern Moroccan history. The entire city was painted blue by its Jewish population in the 1930s to represent the sky, and therefore Heaven, and it has become a local icon among visitors to Morocco ever since.

Picnic at Parc Perdicaris

There’s nothing that accentuates one of these luxury cruises to Tangier quite like a peaceful picnic atop Parc Perdicaris. Pick up a baguette and small mezze platter in town to take with you before you go. Then, take an easy hike up to the top of the hill to get the best views of the sea and city, and best seats in the park for your picnic. There are also biking trails, plenty of shade from the trees, and a refreshing Atlantic breeze from the adjacent ocean. Par Perdicaris is just a 10-minute drive from the center of the city, and you can take a tour there, or hire a private car or taxi service to take you.

Top Food & Drink Spots Near the Tangier Cruise Port

If dining and drinks are on the agenda (and they should be here) then the Port of Tangier does not disappoint. This city’s mix of culture and trade routes adds to a near limitless array of local flavors and dishes. Moroccan food in Tangier is best known for dishes made with local North African spices, blended with French and Spanish culinary style. These dishes often include couscous, lamb, fresh fish, cumin, nutmeg, turmeric, and mint. Make sure to try tajine, a Berber dish slow-cooked and served in a clay pot.

Culture & History of Tangier, Morocco

To understand the many layers of culture and history in Tangier, it’s important to appreciate its strategic location. This city is the southernmost gateway to the Mediterranean, and with that positioning has come thousands of years of trade, conquest, and cultural development. Originally founded as a Phoenician colony between 8,000-9,000 BCE, Tangier has seen epochs of Roman, Arab, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English rule, and independence. Its contemporary culture is Arab North African with many southern Europeans traits blended in seamlessly.

Tangier Port Facilities & Location

Tangier cruises are convenient and popular due to the proximity of the port to the city’s attractions. Tangier’s port faces the narrow Straits of Gibraltar, the gateway to the Mediterranean, with Spain just across the water. The port lies just a few short blocks away from the ancient Medina (old city). Within minutes of disembarking your cruise to Tangier, you’ll be right in the heart of the bustling, historic streets and markets. There’s no shortage of things to see and eat, do, eat, and see within easy reach of your ship.

Transportation in Tangier

Though public transportation is abundant in the form of buses, traveling by foot, private shuttle, or licensed taxi is best. Tangier can get crowded with visitors, particularly in the Medina and other central areas. This means walking is often the quickest way to get around. Private shuttles and licensed taxis are air-conditioned for comfort, and many services come with English-speaking drivers, too. Always negotiate a price before setting off.

Shopping in Tangier, Morocco

For the best shopping in Tangier, you don’t have to go far. Head to the Fondouk Chejra weavers’ market for authentic hand-made woven rugs, robes, scarves, and clothes. Browse exquisite antiques at the Galerie Tindouf, and while there, head for some more local fare at the Tindouf Bazar next door. You will also find lots of great authentic souvenirs at small shops spread all over the Medina during your cruise to Tangier.

Local Currency & Tipping Options

The local currency in Morocco is the dirham. There are ATMs in the city, but many are unavailable after banks close for the day. You can withdraw cash at the ATM located adjacent to the cruise terminal, or exchange currency once inside the old city walls. Cards are accepted in many places, as are Euros, but many smaller vendors prefer cash, so bring plenty with you on these cruises to Tangier. Tipping is common, but usually done by rounding up in small amounts, or leaving 5-10% for good service at a restaurant or following a tour.

Alaska set to limit daily number of cruise ship passengers who can visit Juneau

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Cruise aficionados looking to experience Alaska's capital, Juneau, may have to vie for permission to disembark and step foot on land, under a new agreement between the city and major cruise lines that sail there.

The agreement between Juneau and Cruise Lines International Association in Alaska (CLIA), finalized last week, seeks to limit the number of daily cruise passengers who can arrive in Juneau to 16,000 on Sundays through Fridays, and to 12,000 on Saturdays, effective in 2026.

The measure intends to limit the congestion and wear and tear tourists can cause a city. Visitors to Juneau skyrocketed to a record 1.6 million last year, after the pandemic depressed numbers for two years. Other popular cities have taken similar measures to limit tourists and their effect on daily life for residents. For example, Venice, Italy, in April became the first city in the world to charge day-trippers a fee just to enter  on peak days.

Alaska's new agreement is designed to cap levels of visitors to roughly where they are now.

"The cruise industry is vital to our local economy, and we need to improve our infrastructure and grow our tour capacity to create a great guest experience and reduce impacts on residents," Juneau Visitor Industry director Alexandra Pierce said in a statement Tuesday. "With this agreement, we are committing to a cap to manage our busiest days and to meet annually to ensure that our visitor numbers remain sustainable."

CLIA, the cruise lines association, applauded the measure, calling the agreement "a well-balanced and thoughtful approach to keeping Juneau a great place to live and visit."

"Ongoing, direct dialogue with local communities is the best way to jointly self-regulate to preserve great resident and visitor experiences while providing a predictable market for the many local businesses that rely on the cruise industry," CLIA said in part in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch.

In Alaska, residents have complained that record numbers of visitors contribute to bad traffic and increase noise pollution when they visit glaciers by helicopter. On the other hand, many local businesses rely on the cruise industry and the steady flow of visitors it provides, the city of Juneau acknowledged in a statement .

Alaska Climate Tourism Tipping Point

Cruise seasons have also been extended from early April to late October, offering year-round residents little reprieve from tourists' presence.

Under a separate agreement, only five large ships are permitted a day during the current cruise season.

Pierce said other projects in the works will also likely diminish the impact tourists have on the city. They include installing a gondola at the city's ski area, updating its downtown sea walk and expanding capacity for visitors at the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area.

City leaders are "trying to balance the needs of our residents, the needs of our economy, the needs of future opportunities for people to stay in our community," she said.

The agreement has its skeptics, though. Cruise industry critic Karla Hart says the new measure isn't sufficient to curb unsustainable levels of tourism. "It feels like we're just getting led along again, and expansion will continue and more time will pass," she said, according to the Associated Press.

Hart is behind a local ballot proposal that would ban ships of at least 250 passengers from stopping in Juneau on Saturdays or on July 4.

Teenager Leaves Parents on Caribbean Island to Get Back to Cruise on Time: 'They Missed the Departure. By a Lot'

The teen writes that their parents were "busy shopping and bargaining with the locals" while their cruise ship was getting ready to leave port

A recent high school graduate is going viral after sharing that they left their parents on a Caribbean island so they could get back to a cruise on time — and the parents missed the boat.

In a post shared to Reddit , the teenager says that their parents recently gifted them a family cruise in honor of turning 18 and graduating high school.

Anticipating that their parents might not be able to stick to the planned nature of a cruise, they write that they told them "that if we went on excursions we had to follow the schedule no matter what."

"Well it was a week-long cruise and they would not head back to the ship when I said it was time to go," the teen writes. "They were busy shopping and bargaining with the locals. I finally said that I was heading back to the ship. My mom waved me off."

Ultimately, the teen adds, "The missed the departure. By a lot. Like 45 minutes."

"They got ahold of me through WhatsApp. They wanted to know why I didn't get the boat to wait for them," the teen writes.

The teen adds that they "wanted to scream" at their parents "that they were not going to inconvenience 3,998 people because two could not understand what a schedule was."

"They ended up having to fly to the next port from there and it was expensive," the teen writes. "They are pissed at me for leaving them behind."

Adding that their parents are now "making me miserable because I left without them," the teen pleads with the internet to ask if they were in the wrong.

By and large, commenters on Reddit side with the teen.

As one person wrote, cruise ships adhere to a strict schedule, and they won't remain at the dock for people to spend more time shopping.

"The docks and ship have a schedule to keep," the commenter wrote. "They are adults and need to be responsible for getting back on time. Which is something you have figured out in less than six months of being an adult. At least you don’t have to go on any more vacations with them after this."

Other commenters chided the parents for expecting the ship to wait for them, with one writing, "Do they think if they arrive late to the airport the plane will wait around for a couple hours? This is not rocket science. It's a mode of transport, you get there on time."

Still others offered a more straightforward assessment of the parents' behavior, writing, "Sounds like [the original poster] is the adult and the parents are the two kids."

Hawaii finds 'insufficient evidence' cruise ship sailed too close to protected coast

Hawaii state authorities failed to find evidence that a Celebrity Cruises ship sailed illegally close to Kauai’s protected Na Pali Coastline.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) investigated last month after social media posts appeared to show the cruise line’s Celebrity Edge ship sailing less than the required 3,000-foot distance from shore.

“DOCARE determined there is insufficient evidence that supports probable cause or that there is clear and convincing evidence to pursue any criminal or civil action at this time,” DLNR said in a news release .

Officers interviewed the ship’s captain upon its return to Honolulu, who said he had total control of the ship and was “always in waters of not less than 30 meters depth,” though he was “unclear” how far the ship was from shore. Witnesses on Kauai could not say with certainty that the ship had sailed too close.

Don't be that tourist: Here's how to respectfully visit Hawaii, have an authentic trip

“Some witnesses did not wish to be involved in the investigation and others only had second-or-third-hand information or repeated what they saw on social media,” the release said.

“While DOCARE’s investigation could not conclude that the cruise ship, carrying more than 50 passengers, was traveling within 3,000 feet of the shoreline, community concerns and photographs appear to show the ship was indeed much closer to shore,” DLNR chair Dawn Chang said in a letter addressed to Celebrity and other cruise lines on Friday. “This incident created a tremendous amount of angst in the community, as this area is highly protected and valued for its natural beauty and cultural significance.

The waters are popular among divers, kayakers, swimmers and more, she said.

Chang acknowledged the cruise industry’s contributions to Hawaii’s economy but urged compliance with the law. “We are putting the industry on notice that the DLNR and the community will be closely monitoring activity not only along the Nāpali Coast, but throughout our state ocean waters.”

Royal Caribbean Group, Celebrity's parent company, declined to comment Tuesday. “We have robust policies in place to maintain compliance with local regulations around the world," a spokesperson told USA TODAY last month amid the investigation. "We will continue to assess our policies and take necessary steps to ensure we continue to operate in the most responsible manner possible."

The Hawaii Tourism Authority previously said that a second cruise ship was also under investigation, but did not specify the vessel or line. HTA and DLNR did not answer questions about the status of the second investigation before publishing.
