Sometimes, you just want to kick back, relax, and not have to worry about anything once you arrive at your destination. All-inclusive holidays are the perfect way to travel like this. At lastminute.com, they have  all-inclusive deals  for holidays all over the world. The one caveat with these true last-minute deals is that they have set departure dates, so you have to be willing to travel for when the deal is running. 

However, we've come across many past travelers who have written about lastminute.com up charging them on the final bill without indicating that the price online wouldn't be the actual price charged. Make sure you're keeping track if you book with Lastminute!

Last-minute holidays

Just because their deals tend to be for last-minute holidays, that doesn't mean that you're limited in destination choice. Payment plans

In addition to lastminute.com offering deals on flights and hotels, one of their selling features is that they offer payment plans for the cost of your travels. You'll first pay a deposit, which is taken in two payments, two weeks apart. The remaining amount will be split into payments of equal amounts, and they'll be automatically charged, so you don't even have to set yourself a reminder!

It is important to note that the payment plan options are currently only available for holiday packages and flight/train and hotel combinations. There is no monthly payment plan option for bookings of one product only, such as only a hotel or only a flight. 

Contact information

When you make any kind of booking, it's good to know the customer support available to you. Lastminute.com isn't very upfront about their contact information. If you don't have a booking ID, there isn't a way to contact anyone directly. They have an  FAQ page , and of course, you can try to contact them via their social media, but there are no direct contact details on the website. The lack of a good customer support system is frequently brought up in negative reviews of lastminute.com.

Sometimes, circumstances out of your control come up that leave you to cancel your trip. How does lastminute.com fare with refunds? 

Not well, unfortunately. In 2020, they were listed as 49th worst out of 53 companies for refunds. This issue worsened during the Covid pandemic as lastminute.com was threatened with legal action for not meeting refund deadlines due to pandemic cancellations.

On their website, refunds are only available due to flight cancellations. You'll have to contact them directly for refund claims if you book a single low-cost flight. Many reviews on Trustpilot speak to poor refund service and bookings not being confirmed after payment has been issued. 

Is Lastminute.com worth it?

We're on the fence about this one. While lastminute's services are inherently excellent at sourcing good deals on all aspects of your travel journey, their customer feedback is of concern. Overall, we believe that you should use Lastminute to look for good deals. However, try to see if you can match these deals on other travel booking sites with a more reliable refund/cancellation policy.

Even if some lastminute.com deals look enticing, their recent reviews and traveler experiences make it so we wouldn't really recommend booking through them. They would be an excellent resource for travel inspiration, though, and certainly if you're traveling to the UK, for booking experiences.

While this app lets you book up to a week in advance (or 100 days in advance for stays up to 14 nights), it's really geared to last-minute bookings, so if there's a hotel you've had your eye on, this is your chance to stay there at a reduced rate. How to Find Cheaper Last-Minute Flights

Most savvy travelers know the best way to find cheap flights is to be flexible and plan ahead.

But sometimes things come up — be it pressing business, a family emergency or a spontaneous vacation — and you have to pack your bags within mere days or even hours of flying. Fortunately, there are several tips and tricks for finding a better deal on impromptu airfare. Here’s how to find cheaper last-minute flights no matter when and where you’re flying.

Check prices at nearby airports

If you’re booking a last-minute flight, don’t just search for the airports closest to your current location and destination. Instead, widen your search to include nearby airports. Decide how far you’re willing to travel before you take off and after you land, and include any airports that fall into that radius in search results.

For example, if you’re flying to New York City, you may think JFK is the obvious option, but Newark or La Guardia are sometimes cheaper. Likewise, there are more than five airports in and around London. The one closest to your final destination may not be the cheapest, so check ticket prices for the other airports, too.

There are a few downsides to consider when flying into a cheaper airport that might be farther away. It will likely take longer to get from the airport to your hotel or office if you choose a cheaper flight that goes into a less convenient airport. And don’t forget to factor in the cost of transportation for that increased distance.

In a destination like New York City or London, ubiquitous and inexpensive public transportation options like buses, subways and trains may still be cheaper than an expensive last-minute flight to your intended destination. But in less popular tourist destinations, it may wind up costing you more once you land to save a little bit of cash on your flight.

Platforms like Google Flights or Expedia often offer the option to include nearby airports when searching.

Search for one-way flights

Another option is to search for one-way flights instead of round-trip. Most airlines price their flights like this anyway for domestic flights at least, but if you search multiple airlines at once, you may just find a good deal on two one-way flights on different airlines. This allows you to choose the cheapest one-way flight in both directions, which has the potential to save you cash.

The downsides may include having to pay for luggage on several different airlines. If, for example, you flew one-way with Southwest (which allows two checked bags per passenger for all flights) and flew with Spirit on the way back, you would have to pay for your checked luggage and your carry-on during the second leg. So be aware that airline luggage policies differ (sometimes vastly).

Google Flights and Skyscanner offer the option to show separate tickets in search results. As you can see, separate tickets can save you $100 in this example from Dallas to Calgary.

One step further: Search for single legs

A more complicated approach to the above is searching for and booking flights one leg at a time. For example, if you have to book a last-minute flight from Austin to Cincinnati and can only find expensive connecting flights, try searching for flights from Austin to Denver and then Denver to Cincinnati. Since Denver (or Atlanta, Chicago, etc.) is a major airport, there’s the potential to find cheap and direct one-way flights from one destination to the next.

As you can see, a direct flight costs $254 while booking two separate single legs costs as little as $200. The amount you could save will vary by destination.

This practice is risky, however, for multiple reasons. First, even if you do save on airfare, you could run into the same problem with luggage fees as booking one-way flights, even if all your travel legs are on the same airline (you’ll have to pay for luggage for each individual booking). But more importantly, if you miss your second flight because the first was delayed, the airline isn’t responsible — which means you could pay more if you have to rebook your final flight.

That said, searching for single legs of travel to find cheaper last-minute flights is best saved for when you can budget several hours or more between connecting flights.

Search for individual tickets if traveling in a group

Another way to potentially save money on last-minute flights (or any flights, for that matter), is to search for individual tickets even if you’re traveling in a group of two or more. Occasionally, you’ll be able to find a lower price on one seat if there’s only one left at that price point.

But you’ll only see it if you search for single seats. If you search for flights for two or more, that lower-priced single seat won’t show up.

More lower-cost flights may be available when searching for seats for one person than a family of four.

If you do find a lower-priced single seat on a flight, book it first, then go back for the other seats and book them separately. This could save a fair amount on at least one ticket.

However, know that you probably won’t be sitting together since you booked separately.

How to rebook quickly for a canceled flight

If your flight is canceled, most airlines will rebook you on their next flight with available space for no additional charge, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. But sometimes there aren't any additional flights available on the same airline — or sometimes the future flight times aren't ideal.

This is an ideal scenario to employ the tactics outlined above. This can improve your odds of getting to your destination without too much disruption to your other travel plans.

Purchasing travel insurance or booking your flights with a card that has travel insurance benefits can help you mitigate the financial risks of last-minute flight changes.

Last-minute flight deals are out there

While last-minute flights will frequently cost more than those booked in advance with flexible travel dates, there are ways to find cheaper last-minute flights. Check nearby airports, search for one-way flights, and consider booking one ticket at a time in order to save cash on impromptu travel plans.

Many domestic airlines allow you to book a flight online up to two hours before departure, but the policy varies from airline to airline. If you’re cutting it close, you can try calling the airline’s reservation line on the way to the airport. The best option, though, is to go straight to the airport ticket counter where they’ll be able to book you on the next available flight. Keep in mind there may be extra fees (in the $25 to $50 range) for booking over the phone or in person at the airport.

Last-minute flight deals are hard to come by. Conventional wisdom might lead you to believe that airlines drop prices to fill seats as it gets closer to the departure date, but the reality is demand is usually strong enough for airlines to overbook many of their flights. Instead of offering last-minute flight deals, airlines can usually sell their cheapest fares first. Then they increase the prices right before the flight to take advantage of business travelers and others who need to fly immediately and are willing to pay for it.

Search for last-minute flights on aggregators like Google Flights for upcoming flights. If you are flexible about where to go, only input the dates you want to travel and leave the destination field blank to see a map of some of the best deals. You might also want to consider flying at off-hours or to a different airport.

Flying standby allows a ticketed passenger to take a different flight, usually on the same day and to the same destination as the original flight. Depending on the airline, you may be able to call to find out about seat availability and show up early to the airport and put your name on the standby list for your desired flight. If you get onboard this way, you may be able to do this without paying extra fees, particularly if you are an elite member of the airline’s loyalty program. Some airlines also allow you to get a confirmed ticket on a different flight for a same-day travel change fee.

Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines both offer bereavement fares in case you have to fly for the death or imminent death of a family member. You must call to book this type of flexible ticket on Delta, but check the published fares first; those still might be cheaper than the bereavement fare. Alaska Airlines offers a 10% discount on published fares for those flying to take care of the passing of an immediate family member. You must call to book, and it only applies for travel starting in the next seven days.

The standard coupons we saw discounted the price of selected hotels $20 to $50.

Last Minute Travel is one of the few travel websites we researched with a live chat feature, which makes up for the lack of email support. The customer service rep we chatted with was slow to answer, but was knowledgeable about the topics we brought up.

Making last-minute purchases in travel rarely saves you money. Airlines often raise prices for last minute or day-of travel. But, LMT offers plenty of promotions, coupons and deals to knock down the price on you last-minute plans. Last Minute Travel doesn't naturally have the lowest prices because they specialize in offering expensive day-of fares, but you'll be able to find an extensive list of available reservations for hotels, cars and flights at a minute's notice.

Chinese whisper transfer booking. Awful

Chinese whisper transfer booking system. Lastminute.com used holiday taxis, who then used German transfer taxi company to book our transfer. Needless to say our booking was never made and never turned up. All companies blame each other. Complaint made, no compensation given. Horrendous. It’s cheap for a reason.

I'd recommend Antalyna in May or October perfect temperature.

Flew fron Birmingham to Antalyna because its easy and I could even use public transport to get to the airport. May in Antalyna is perfect weather in terms of heat and stayed in the Golden Orange in Konyaalti. This was a great location the beach front runs for about 4 miles and its all very nicely laid out with parks , bars , seating. The only issue I had was not picking up on my return flight with SunExpress where I thought I had carry on luggage but ended up paying £75 for my carry on 8kg bag. Not that obvious when filling in the flight details and not picked up or obvious even after printing out the boarding card. The outboard flight via Correndon the information was visible on the card and was included in the cost. So watch out for carry on being limited to 4Kg .

easy booking / reasonable price

easy booking procedure, several options in regards to flights, rooms, additional services. Although we first looked at packages (flights + hotels) it was cheaper to book it separately, so we booked the hotel with Last minute.com and the flights with the airline directly. Travel agent very helpful

Travel agent, Terry very helpful on phone. Explained about luggage for planes as we were unsure what to take etc. and what seats to book. Very professional and went through all details again at the end, in case we had any questions. Website is easy to use, but prefer to talk to someone if not done it before. All went well according to plan. Regarding Vueling company, I would not recommend, as cabin crew rude and unprofessional. Ona Mar Menor hotel, Spain was lovely but not quite 5 star. Gym equipment not working and probably need to improve on few little things.

The travel industry is very good at taking your money but are not interested when there’s a problem that may involve a refund. Rip off airlines and their partners in crime. Quick help from customer service

I contacted customer service to change my flight to an earlier date. They reached out 10 minutes after my request, and gave me a quote for the changed flight. A very positive experience, especially considering how many bad reviews they have received at trustpilot. I did not change my flight, because the quoted price was higher than it should have been (800EUR for one extra night at the hotel, which would have cost me 150EUR to fix myself at the hotel website). However, I still feel more safe in my choice of travel agency after this quick contact :)

The hotel was wonderful

The hotel was wonderful, and didn't deserve many of the negative reviews written. The only thing I would say is that, as it is run by a French company, the activities were all presented in French, and although this wasn't an issue for me (fluent French speaker) many British guests found this difficult. The trips arranged, although they were very good, had a French speaker and this too caused issues for my partner who doesn't speak French.

Extremely disappointed with Last Minute

Extremely disappointed with my experience with Last Minute. After planning for my holiday, I paid in full, only to have my trip abruptly canceled after 8 days from purchasing without warning. Not only did this disrupt my plans, but the lack of communication and explanation from the company made it worst. Their disregard for their customers' time and trust is unacceptable. Be aware before booking, unless you want to risk having your dreams dashed at the “last minute”.

Lesson learned

Was directed to them via booking.com when I tried to book accomodation + flights, and I found the right accomodation + flights for Naples and booked, sure enough they took the money off my card but e-mail they sent stated that my booking was not confirmed but they will let me know soon enough. They came back next morning to tell me that they couldn't confirm my booking so I should try again. So, I did and then few hours later the same result. Until I had confirmation from them I couldn't book any flights anwyhere else so I ended up paying more for flights because of their poor delivery or no delivery. I do not recommend using them.

Perfectly suitable but not without it's flaws

The room itself was spacious and reasonably clean. There was a large jacuzzi in the room which was unfortunately not working, which was disappointing as it is a key feature of the room. The shower however was suitably pleasant. One thing to be aware of if you are planning a quiet getaway is that you are based above a nightclub which was very noisy on the Fri and Sat only, but until 7am. Great central location otherwise, I would visit again if it was during the week.

My recent stay in Amsterdam was great-…

My recent stay in Amsterdam was great- the hotel was lovely, however we booked this hotel specifically because it had a swimming pool but on arrival we were told it was out of action due to construction. This had been going on for a few months but at no time were we advised of this. I feel this is something that should be communicated to customers so they can consider changing the hotel. It didn’t stop us having a good time but it was a quite a disappointment when we were told.

This attractive but expensive travel backpack has customizable straps and great, cushy padding. It comes in only one size, however.

I traveled with a Farpoint 55 for years, across dozens of countries for months at a time. In 2023, Osprey released new incarnations of the Farpoint 55  and the sized-for-smaller-torsos Fairview 55 .

These new versions mostly kept what we liked about the previous ones and fixed what we didn’t. Best of all, they’re among the least expensive travel backpacks available. After several years as runner-ups, the packs are once again our top picks.

The front of the main pack still unzips like a suitcase, so you can easily fit and access a week’s worth of clothes and toiletries. The daypack, which attaches to the front of the larger pack, has room for camera gear, daily essentials, and a small laptop (via a built-in sleeve). The main pack’s straps can tuck behind a zippered flap, so they won’t catch on anything if you check your luggage.

The best change: The main packs are now overhead-bin-sized for most airlines. (You’ll have to use the daypack as your underseat bag.) Other notable updates include height-adjustable shoulder straps and big exterior pockets on the daypack. Previous versions of these bags used ripstop nylon. The current one uses a heavy-duty recycled polyester, which held up well during a six-week trip across Europe.

Osprey offers a lifetime warranty.

If you want something a little larger than the Osprey packs, the REI Co-op Ruckpack 60+ Recycled Travel Pack - Men’s (for travelers with longer torsos) and the REI Co-op Ruckpack 60+ Recycled Travel Pack - Women’s (for travelers with shorter torsos) are just as adjustable and comfortable. The Ruckpacks had been our top picks for several years—we now prefer the new Ospreys because they’re carry-on sized.

The Ruckpacks have a smaller daypack than the Ospreys, which isn’t as good for photographers and digital nomads, but the main packs are larger, which can be good if you’re carrying bulkier items like a heavy jacket. While not carry-on-sized, the main pack’s overall dimensions are still manageable. The Ruckpack 60+ is also a little cheaper than the Osprey packs.

The Ruckpacks are made from a tough, recycled ripstop nylon that stands up to wear. REI offers a return period of up to a year if you’re a member (90 days if you’re not). However, if the problem is a manufacturing or materials defect, the packs are covered by REI Co-op’s warranty, which has no specified expiration date.

The Salkan The Backpacker looks and feels like a higher-end travel backpack. The polyester cloth feels extremely rugged, and there’s extensive padding in every place the pack touches your body.

Available in black and lightish green, The Backpacker has nine color options for its exterior compression straps, so you can mix and match based on your preferences—or even change them up. This gives The Backpacker the most customizable palette of any of our picks.

While looking more stylish on TikTok and Instagram isn’t generally a primary consideration for us, overall The Backpacker feels well made, and it has many of the same thoughtful features as our top and runner-up picks, including lots of pockets, smooth zippers, and height-adjustable shoulder straps.

These are offset, however, by a much higher price. Also, the main pack is technically too large to be a carry-on for most airlines, and the bag comes in only one size. (Salkan says it’s best for people 5-foot-6 to 6-foot-4).

The research

I’ve lived, worked, and visited 60 countries on six continents, as well as all 50 US states. I spent the majority of 2014 through 2020 traveling. Over the last few years, I’ve done a mix of extended road trips and multi-month international adventures. For all those years, I lived out of a backpack while abroad. I’ve also traveled in Africa, China, and throughout Europe with a variety of terrible backpacks and luggage, so I know what’s best to avoid.

A travel backpack is for people who want to travel around the world unencumbered by heavy, slow-moving wheeled luggage. An internal-frame backpack in the 50- to 65-liter range has more than enough room for all of the possessions you need to travel anywhere for an indefinite amount of time—as long as you’re okay with doing laundry once you get to a destination. (If you’re going to carry heavy jackets, going-out clothes, multiple pairs of footwear, or other bulky gear, you may want something a tad bigger .)

A travel backpack is not for business travelers who’d like to maintain appearances, nor is it for outdoor enthusiasts looking to spend six weeks hiking in Patagonia. If you prefer something that rolls, check out our guide to the best carry-on luggage . Based on my experience and research, we looked for travel backpacks with the following qualities:

• Fifty to 65 liters, including a daypack: We looked at bags between 50 and 65 liters (including an integral, removable daypack). Packs this size can easily hold everything you need for any length of trip, while being small enough to remain manageable while you’re wearing it.
• Clamshell opening: For extended travel use, backpacking backpacks have annoying qualities, including that they tend to load only from the top and are sealed with a drawstring. This design saves weight and means there’s one less thing to break. But it’s a total hassle when you want something from the bottom of the bag because you have to unload and reload the entire pack. We looked for bags where the front zips fully open like a suitcase, making it easy to pack or repack and find things during your trip.
• A well-framed structure: A fully loaded backpack, even a small one, can easily weigh more than 20 pounds. My old Farpoint 55 usually hovered in the mid-30s, though that included a DSLR, three lenses, a battery pack , a laptop, a 360 camera , and other work-related gear. A fully supported internal-frame pack distributes the weight onto your hips, which are much stronger than your back and shoulders. If you’re going to be doing a significant amount of walking, you’ll want something with a frame.
• Durability: We looked for features to help the pack last, like some sort of cover to contain the straps (for easier storage on planes and trains), as well as lightweight and water-resistant materials.
• Plenty of storage (and separation): I’ve done all of my traveling in the past five years with a 55-liter backpack (which includes a 15-liter daypack). I tend to overpack a bit, but 55 liters lets me carry everything I need (the full list is below) for weeks, or even months, at a time.

Here’s what I usually bring for any length of trip (and this is our standard kit for testing):

• main pack (the command module , if you will)
• daypack (the lunar excursion module )
• pair of walking shoes or sneakers (along with the shoes I’m wearing)
• five shirts, one pair of shorts, one pair of jeans (not shown because I wear them in transit), one merino wool underlayer
• warm hat (because my head lacks insulation)
• five pairs of underwear, five pairs of socks, one extra T-shirt for laundry day, one bathing suit (I really recommend packing cubes )
• rain jacket in an Eagle Creek bag
• various adapters , camera batteries, chargers, etc.
• various toiletries, vitamins, etc.
• Osprey rain cover
• razor, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
• well-worn flip-flops
• travel towel
• portable Bluetooth speaker
• prescription dive mask
• merino wool jacket
• inflatable pillow
• smartwool half-zip midlayer
• sun hat (because my head hates sun)
• extra travel adapter for daypack (when the daypack is my carry-on)

For our first version of this guide in 2016, we narrowed our choices to 11 possible contenders. For that initial round of testing, I poked and prodded the different packs to sort out whether they had any obvious flaws or issues. I had adults of various sizes try each pack to get a sense of what short and tall people preferred.

For each subsequent update, including this one, I tested with similar methods whatever new or substantially redesigned packs were available. In between updates, I took one of our picks on some extended travels.

The Osprey Fairview 55 and the nearly identical Osprey Farpoint 55 have been one of our picks since the first version of this guide came out in 2016. (The Fairview is for people with 15- to 19-inch torsos, as measured from the top of your hip bone to your C7 vertebra, the one that sticks out when you press your chin to your chest. The Farpoint is for those with torsos from 17 to 22 inches long.) They’re now our top picks again, and here’s why.

You can carry them on the plane. Once you detach the daypacks, the main packs are now carry-on-sized, making them the most versatile travel backpack we’ve tested. Interestingly, the total capacity remains roughly the same as those of our other picks—that is, we were able to stow the same amount of clothing in this bag as we could in the REI Co-op packs and the Salkan . The daypack, in this case, would count as your personal item—on most airlines, this would mean you couldn’t also bring a large purse or a briefcase.

Or check your bag—your choice. The shoulder straps can be secured behind a zippered panel, so if you want to check the bag or put it in a packed luggage compartment on a train or bus, they won’t catch on anything. Doing this essentially turns the main pack temporarily into a duffle bag, complete with sturdy and well-padded handles on the top and side.

They’re adjustable. Like our other picks, the main pack has height-adjustable shoulder straps. This crucial feature lets you get an all-important personalized fit that makes carrying the pack for any length of time far easier. The straps were padded enough for our testers’ comfort (though not as cushy as the Salkan’s, and slightly less so than the REI Co-op’s).

They have comfortable, easy-to-use daypacks. The daypacks are roughly the same size, or a little larger, than those of our other picks, something travelers who plan to cart lots of camera gear or other daily essentials will appreciate. The top of the shoulder straps connect to form a sturdy handle, which is extremely, ahem, handy. Each daypack easily holds a 15-inch MacBook and is comfortable to wear over long treks. There are two large exterior mesh pockets for water bottles . Though the daypack is a little short on organizational slots and pockets, its comfort made it the best overall.

The backpacks are tough. The Farpoint and the Fairview are made from 450-denier recycled polyester, which feels thick and sturdy, though more “plasticky” compared to the Salkan. (Denier is a measure of the fiber thickness in a fabric.) I put the Farpoint through six weeks of train, bus, and airplane trips across Europe, and it didn’t show any signs of wear or breaking.

You can attach a lock, if you want. Unlike the Salkan The Backpacker, both the main pack and the daypack’s main zippers are lockable.

The backpacks come in more color options than our other picks. Currently, the Farpoint comes in black, green, blue, and grey. The Fairview comes in black, green, red, and purple.

The packs include a lifetime warranty. Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee covers repair of any damage or defect for life—or replaces the pack, if repair is impossible. If you just want to return the pack unused, you have 30 days.

It’s been a pick in this guide for seven years—and counting. I have put my money where my mouth is, so to speak. After testing this 2023 pack, I liked it so much that I bought one for myself, replacing an Osprey Farpoint that had been my go-to pack for years of travel.

It comes in additional capacities. If you already have a daypack that you like, the Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 are just the main pack from the 55 (they’re also picks in our guide to carry-on travel backpacks ). You can add the daypack later if you want. If you want more space and don’t mind checking your luggage, the Osprey Farpoint 70 and the Osprey Fairview 70 are slightly larger versions of their Farpoint 55 and Fairview 55 counterparts—anything we’ve said about the Farpoint 55 and the Fairview 55 also applies to them. They would work well for those who want to go with the Osprey but need more room in the main pack for, say, clothes for multiple climates, bulky items like ski parkas, and the like.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

• The U-shaped opening of the daypack is surprisingly small, restricting access. You can’t easily spot things at the bottom or carry bulky items. On the other hand, this does limit what might spill out of the pack if you forget to fully close it, something that has happened to me several times with the old half-clamshell design.
• Previous versions of the Farpoint and the Fairview had large zippers that basically fused the daypack to the main pack. With this version, the daypack hangs off the back, secured only by the nylon compression straps. The straps loop through reinforced parts of the daypack, so it seems reasonably secure, and this new design does let you stuff more things in both packs—but as someone who carries a lot of expensive gear in the daypack, I’m less than excited about it.
• The pack isn’t as comfortable as the heavily padded Salkan. Osprey seems to have prioritized weight and breathability over padding. In warmer climates, though, this could be a good thing.
• Unlike our other picks, the Farpoint and the Fairview don’t include a rain cover. One is available separately, however. Osprey recommends the large size for the 55 L packs.
• The new design is slightly smaller than the old one, as well as being a little smaller than the REI Co-op and Salkan packs.
• Lastly, while looks are entirely subjective, the Farpoint and the Fairview are very much “backpack-looking backpacks.” The dark color choices are safe, to put it mildly.

The REI Co-op Ruckpack 60+ Recycled Travel Pack - Men’s and the REI Co-op Ruckpack 60+ Recycled Travel Pack - Women’s were previously our top picks, until they were replaced this year by the improved Osprey packs.

It’s easy to get just the right fit. The Ruckpack has well-padded and height-adjustable straps, closer in size and padding to those of the Salkan than those of the Osprey . Like the Osprey but unlike the Salkan, the Ruckpack comes in two models, one marketed toward men and the other toward women. The men’s model, available in black or blue, is for people with torsos between 17 and 21 inches. The women’s model, available in black or reddish orange, fits torsos between 15 and 19 inches.

It’s sturdy. The Ruckpack uses a recycled, 210-denier ripstop nylon. It feels similarly sturdy as the Osprey, though not as sturdy as the Salkan. Previous versions of the Ruckpack have held up well over time, and we’ll continue testing to see how the 2023 version wears.

It’s bigger than the Osprey, although the daypack is smaller. Capacity wise, there’s a bit more room in the Ruckpack’s main pack than in the slightly smaller Osprey’s. The daypack, however, is a little smaller. Which backpack works better depends on what gear you carry and how you want to carry it. If you have a lot of things you want on your person at all times, the Osprey is better. If you have more or bulkier clothes, and no camera or less-bulky daypack gear, the REI might be better.

It has more pockets than our top pick. These pockets are on the inside (three are accessible via external zippers) and the outside (on the hip belt, for instance). This is especially convenient if you want to quickly stash items or get to them without having to open the main compartment. And, unlike the Osprey packs, the Ruckpack includes a rain cover.

You will have to check it. The Ruckpack’s dimensions make it too large to qualify as a carry-on, even if you detach the daypack from the main pack. The main pack’s straps can be stored behind a zippered panel when you check your bag.

The main pack’s zippers are easily lockable. However, the daypack’s zippers don’t have the standard holes for easy locking. Instead, you have to thread the lock through the holes in the pull tabs. This isn’t a huge deal, but it’s an odd oversight.

REI has a good return policy. REI has a one-year “ 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed ” return policy if you’re a member (90 days if you’re not). This is not quite as epic as Osprey’s lifetime guarantee, but you should have enough time to determine whether or not you like the pack. However, if the issue is a manufacturing defect, you should be able to return it any time.

The Salkan The Backpacker is a higher-end travel backpack for people who want the comfort of our top pick but are willing to pay more for swappable design options and more organization.

It has more organization than our top pick. The capacity of the main pack is 45 liters, basically the same as that of our main picks . It has more organization and compartments than the Osprey packs, however. There are two large water-bottle compartments on either side and a laptop compartment inside, as well as several other small, zippered compartments. In addition to the main zippered hatch, the top opens with a drawstring like a hiking backpack, allowing fast access or storage. This drawstring design does allow you to stuff a bit more into the pack than the Osprey or REI Co-op packs. However, the main pack is technically too tall to be a carry-on for most airlines.

It has the best padding. The shoulder straps are well padded—the best I’ve seen—and height adjustable. The back panel and hip straps are generously padded, too. All this does make the pack nearly twice as heavy as the Osprey, though we’re talking only a few pounds (under 8 pounds compared with the Farpoint’s 4-plus pounds). For reference, the Farpoint, fully loaded with all my clothes, heavy camera gear, and so on, was around 35 pounds, including the bag itself.

You can customize it. The pack is available in two main colors: black and light green. In addition, the straps have complementary color options, including orange (shown above), pink, and maroon, plus five other choices. This allows for more personalization and flair compared to the Osprey and REI Co-op packs. Salkan also sells several accessories to go with The Backpacker, such as packing cubes, water bottles, and a laundry bag that attaches to the inside of the main pack.

It’s sturdy—but has not-so-great attachments. The bag’s 900-denier polyester fabric (even stronger than our top pick’s 450-denier fabric) is extremely strong and should resist rips or tears. What zippers The Backpacker has run smoothly, but the design oddly eschews them in key places. While the main compartment has a zipper, as do multiple smaller compartments, the main and daypack’s top openings do not, using drawstrings and a flap instead. These flaps are secured with aluminum “G”-shaped hooks (Salkan calls them buckles) that slide into nylon straps. The hooks feel nice in your hand and could well last longer than the plastic clips on the Osprey and REI Co-op packs. However, connecting them takes a few moments longer than using a clip or zipper would—time that adds up. They also feel less secure, like they could slide loose under load and movement. (These hooks are also what connect the daypack to the main pack.)

It has a great warranty. Salkan has a “ ‘No Landfill’ Lifetime Guarantee ”: “If there is something wrong with your backpack that shouldn’t be, then we’ll try to repair it, and if we can’t, we’ll replace it.” In addition, the company has a 100-day trial period within which you can return or exchange the pack if you don’t like it.

But it’s pricey. The Backpack costs much more than the Osprey or REI Co-op packs. While it’s arguably better-looking than either, this doesn’t add much functional difference. The pack’s comfortable, but so are the others. It’s adjustable, but so are the others. It comes with a rain cover, but so does the REI Co-op pack, and Osprey’s is $40. Is the Salkan’s extra cost and organization worth the better aesthetics? That’s not for me to say.

And we couldn’t attach a lock. There’s no way to lock either the main pack or the daypack. There’s no way to attach a lock to the “G” hooks. The nylon drawstrings at the main pack’s top opening, as well as the daypack’s, offer no practical way of attaching a lock. For such a well-designed and feature-rich pack, this is a surprising oversight. Is this a dealbreaker? Probably not, at least for most people. With the daypack buckled and the drawstring closed, it’s highly unlikely someone could reach in while you’re wearing it without you noticing. However, I frequently leave my pack in luggage rooms at hotels or the occasional hostel without lockers, and not being able to lock it when it’s out of sight would concern me.

This is not a comprehensive list of everything we tested in previous iterations of this guide—just what’s still available.

During our research, we checked out a number of companies that make great packs, but none of those packs met all of our criteria. In most cases this was because the company specialized in top-loading bags, bags with wheels, bags that were too big, or very large bags that didn’t include daypacks. These companies included Black Diamond, Berghaus, Dakine, Eagle Creek, eBags, EMS, Ferrino, Gregory, High Sierra, Kathmandu, Kelty, Minaal, MEI, The North Face, Ortovox, Outdoor Research, Patagonia, Rick Steves, Thule, Timbuk2, and Victorinox.

The Deuter Aviant Access Pro has many of the features we liked, but its daypack is too small. The pack’s also more expensive than our top picks.

The men’s and women’s Thule Landmark 60L are well-made, sturdy packs, with a wide main-pack opening and most of the same features that we like in the other packs. They’re more expensive, though, and the daypacks aren’t as comfortable.

The Tropicfeel Shelter Backpack is a highly customizable pack to which you can add “modules” that expand capacity or change its use. It’s a cool idea, and the pack seems well designed, but it’s extremely expensive and doesn’t really add that much practical use over our main picks.

Very poor service with Travelpack

Very poor service with Travelpack I contacted Travelpack to book a holiday and the staff members on customer services didn't understand. It was meant to be a simple booking but I had to contact them several times to get the itinerary right and they still couldn't. I don't understand what they didn't understand. They claim to have many years of experience but the staff members appointed doesn't seem to understand. I was so frustrated because a lot of my time has been wasted. Never ever will I use this company

I would never recommend Travelpack

I would never recommend Travelpack I booked a holiday package with them and they couldn't get my booking right. I had several telephone conversations with them and the staff don't seem to understand my requirements. I explained if they didn't understand then it's OK because I will use another travel agent but they reassured me that they will ensure a good package for me but they still made so many mistakes and they claimed they made a loss when they didn't because they charged me extra for the mistakes they made.

Travelpack has messed up my booking…

Travelpack has messed up my booking completely. I booked a holiday package with flights, transfers and accommodation. I have been going back and forth with Travelpack to confirm every detail and they had confirmed everything and I paid for the full price. When the confirmation email and copy had come through, things were changed which surprised me. My travel agent has also tried to sort the situation but the director of Travelpack was rude to my travel agent. I was there when the director was talking to my travel agent over the phone. I would never recommend Travelpack. This is the second time they messed up my booking

If I could give zero stars I would.

If I could give zero stars I would. I am a Travel agent and was recommended to use Travelpack as a supplier to help with my booking for a continental holiday package as I was told they are an expert in the far East. They have completely messed up my client's booking and they accused my clients of wanting free accommodation and they claimed they had to bear the loss and paid the extra price when they actually charged my clients the extra costs and my clients paid. The staff even puts the phone down and don't want to answer the questions because they know they are in the wrong. My clients are even willing to discuss alternatives and even bear the cost but Travelpack don't know how to discuss alternatives that will help my clients. The staff are very incompetent.

Only good experiences here

I have used travel pack a few times now to book some really amazing trips for my clients . Multi centre holidays and some long haul luxury holidays. So far they have all gone extremely smoothly and I couldn’t have asked more from them. The customer service is amazing and they were there at the other end of the phone and email at all different hours to reassure me and help with anything I needed to know for my clients. I would highly recommend them

Stay patient we got our refund!

After a shaky start with Travelpack (lack of notification of a cancelled flight and poor telephone communication) Heleena via Instagram has been beyond brilliant and we have received our 3k flight refund within 4 weeks. These guys aren’t scammers in our experience they are also struggling. Stick with it, keep on their radar and I’m sure you’ll get your refunds .

Don't give up hope getting your money back! After a few emails and calls I have now got my refund for a flight to Australia that was supposed to depart on 1st July. Nick/Nirvan were particularly helpful and understanding. They do seem to be working as best they can under difficult circumstances. Let's hope the company does survive so that we call start travelling again soon.

Flight booking - slow but got there in the end!

I have recently booked flights with Travelpack using an airline voucher issued during covid lockdown. The process was very slow but glad to say everything is now booked. I wasn't able to speak to anyone directly - the call handlers just seem to take messages and everything is done over email. It is a worrying experience as you are risking flight costs going up while you wait for email replies but relieved it all went (relatively) smoothly after reading some of these horrific reviews. I have also had to pay an administration fee of £15 per person to the agent directly which seems a little steep for the service provided.

COVID rebooking SCAM

Originally booked business class flight MAN/ORD in March 2020. Due to travel restrictions four changes to travel date. I have now paid total of £3400 with various add on requested to cover fare changes. Today to make another change further £400 requested to cover fare difference on May 2021 flight giving total £3800 for one passenger. Looking at Travelpacks own website the same flights total £1850 for one passenger. Looks like this company are profiting for COVID crisis on rebookings. Suggest you avoid dealing with Travelpack

Refund Received

I have this week received my refund for BA flights to Florida in May 2020. My advice is to be patient - mine has taken 9 months but refunds are being processed. I suspect that the number of Accounts staff available to process refunds is very low. I made regular calls to the call centre. Every customer service associate I spoke to was polite and updated me on the status. My credit card company were no faster in dealing with this and last week said they could not submit a claim so I was relieved when Travelpack contacted me to ask for the updated expiry date for my credit card. I am giving them 3 * because the process was slow but it is a very difficult time for travel agents.

Not professional and Honest Agency

Booked ticket for India. Flights cancelled in Aug 2020. Still no refund. Every call same answer that Airlines hasn't refunded for cancelled flight. Then I called Airline and they confirmed that refund was issued in Dec 2020!!! Very shocking.. I was expecting better customer service and honest process. Also, charging to customers admins charge even if flight cancelled by Airlines!!! Been customer for more than 10 years. But now not any more...

Absolute thieves these people ., my refund was authorised by airline back in September 2021 since then these thieves are making lame excuses and to date still haven’t refunded my ticket money back. Now I have been forced to make complaint to relevant trading standards as well as airline agent regulators to report this company., I must say, I have never come across any shameless company in my life before. Shame on the management and shame on the director Mr Vishal Ashok Patel.

Echoing the reviews below. Flights cancelled due to covid. Refund promised within 8-10 weeks minus £30 admin fee per person. Almost 16 weeks of emails/empty promises/missed deadlines. In the end I raised a dispute with my credit card, a week or so later a full refund appeared including the "admin" fee. Avoid this company.

Note very honest people

Not very honest people! After my flight has been cancelled in Aug 2020 due to COVID restrictions they told me that only voucher can be provided. And I can only use voucher via them. Well two years later only after I threatened to use an alternative dispute resolution approach they agreed to request refund from airline! What a bunch of thieves! Update: 2.5 year later got refund(Feb 2023), minus a few quid of some sort of non-refundable fees!

Refund after Small Claims court threat

Like many other reviewers, I had to chase Travelpack for a refund on flights I couldn't take due to the COVID pandemic. I waited the 8-10 weeks I was told it would take to get the refund and then when I called was twice told I was in a 'refund queue'. I only got my refund after I threatened to take them to Small Claims Court (would recommend doing that). Would give one star, but every time I called them I thought the customer advisers were doing their best in what must be a very rubbish job.

Complete scam artists

Complete scam artists! Dont go anywhere near this company! Ive been waiting a year for a flight refund and they give me the same story as all the rest of he unfortunate souls on here. We have a saying in our business you should oil the squeakiest wheel first, so my advice is make an utter nuisance of yourself and send letters, emails threatening all sorts of legal action. It might not work but Im not going down without a fight!

Worst refund processing

Processing of refund is very INCONVENIENT. I've contacted them via calls and emails MULTIPLE times to no avail. When reached, they always give an indefinite, vague and impractical responses. This has been going on for 7 months now and still I haven't got my my response. This isnt how you treat customers guys. Come on!

Had to cancel my booking with these people and was assured my refund would be in my bank within 5/7 days, what a joke 9 weeks later and still nothing but excuses. When you ring Cust Services you get some Indian call centre who are just hopeless. They wanted a screenshot of my bank showing no payment, which i did and now they are saying the problem is with my bank which there isnt. So after ELEVEN phone calls to India i am just going round in circles as they just roll out lie after lie. Could some kind member please tell me where to go next to get my money back please, as this break was for my disabled daughter and as we are not flush we really cant afford to let these people steal our hard earned money. Any advice would be much appreciated, and any answers quick please before they have this post removed as they have done with others. Thanks in advance

First, Last minute can not have threads removed. That's just silly.

If your booking was refundable and you cancelled within the time allowed- call your credit card and file a dispute. If you are due a refund- you'll get it.

No company or individual can get forum posts removed. Why do you believe that? TripAdvisor does not work like that. Any member like you and I can report a forum posting if we believe it violates forum posting guidelines. If enough separate people click/report and those reports reach a specific number (only TripAdvisor knows) then there is an automated removal of that posting.

Anyway promised email of cancellation never arrived this was promised to arrive by midnight at the latest...so Monday morning called them again...they hadn't cancelled it!!!but told me there was a fraudulent transaction in place from the flight company..

Well then...how come

1 money was paid to last minute...that name showed up on my bank statement....????

2how come they then suggested to cancel and rebook...yip they would have 2 payments by now and a flight leaving this afternoon with no idea if it would be confirmed....they state between 2 and 24 hours for confirmation from airline .

They lied lied lied lied....

So this morning again told them to cancel.....guess what...a few hours later they called to see if we still wanted the booking to go ahead....!!!!!

I have been told that money will be refunded inside 72 hours..but not holding my breath.....

As for answer to above query

Call your bank and request them to call the money back....you may speak to a few idiots who do not know what you are talking about at the bank......but after 28 days your bank can intervene and pull the money back from the company....no one tells you this.i have used this method on 2 occassions from my ordinary credit account..1 was for fake boots bought online..... PLEASE BE WARNED ABOUT Last-minute.com.....do not trust them

I agree with you. I can't really see what benefits these third parties provide. Some say you cna save money by using them. I say that even if you do, there's a pretty good chance that you will end up paying more through fees in the end, or simply by having to spend time and money in trying to contact them if something goes wrong.

Even if you do save something, it's likely to be a trifling amount.

Just a quick update, have received a phone call from these "people" and it gets worse. They admitted that they were phoning from Madrid as they had no office based in the U.K and he had an update. Theyve already have had a screenshot of the days they didnt pay the money in and now they wanted to see the whole of my transactions from my bank for the whole month of August (43 pages in total) and of course i refused as that would an infringement on my privacy and must be in some way illegal to demand this info. At this point he admitted there had been some reorganisation of the company and this may be the fault. O.M.G it appears they have little or no idea of certain transactions within their banking system. He also agreed what had been requested was inappropriate and decided to contact me again with another scam on how to steal my money, so waiting with baited breath. It appears that this company is totally hopeless, PLEASE!, PLEASE GO ELSEWHERE!!!. When he eventually rings back will post again. Thanks for all your posts

I wish people would go elsewhere and avoid these terrible companies. I definitely classify Last Minute/Bravofly as a terrible company, although i understand that they used to be more reliable than they are now. That's thanks to Bravofly!

Sadly, all the evidence is that there are far too many people who will just use companies such as these without doing any research whatsoever, and regardless of all the complaints and warnings to be found in places like this. That's why they are able to stay in business at the end of the day.

I sympathise with you, and I hope that you will take a valuable lesson from this and never find yourself in a similar position again.

Did you do any research on this bunch of shysters?

Now in fairness LastMinute used to be reputable, but two years ago they were bought by Bravofly who are right up there on Mount Shonky fleecing their customers. All the complaints are on here and the Air Travel Forum.

So if you'd never booked LastMinute before, you have no excuses. You should have done research and you'd have seen all the complaints.
