A 1 day walking guide to Reims, France

Strolling in reims map  |, cathédrale notre-dame de reims ~ palais du tau ~ place royale ~ hôtel de ville ~ halles du boulingrin ~ place drouet d’erlon ~ cours jean-baptiste langlet |, distance: 3km |, time (for us, ie slow): 1 hour |, ascent: 21m (flat and easy) |, found on foot: gothic cathedral | nightly light shows | art deco food market | champagne tasting | parisian boulevards & cafes.

Welcome to Reims! (pronounced, mystifying, like “Rasss”!) A city of wide boulevards, impressive classical and Gothic architecture, and elegant squares lined with cafes. On the Via Francigena route, Reims is actually only forty-five minutes from Paris by train, and we think it has some of that Parisian chic – it just also happens to be the Champagne capital of the world. A perfect size to get to know on foot, we’ve put together a wander around the city, taking in both big sights and hidden streets. So here’s our walk around Reims:

1. Office de Tourisme > Palais du Tau

Start the walk from outside the Office de Tourisme and walk towards the thirteenth century Reims Cathedral . Now you could go in because it’s AMAZING but we’re suggesting you go at the end of this walk instead – explore a little of Reims first!

Reims walk start at Cathedral

What you should do right now is to go into the Palais du Tau , on the right of the cathedral. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, housing the art collections of the Cathedral. It’s here you also get tickets and a place on a tour of the cathedral roof and tower. There are GREAT views of Reims and beyond up there, and tours are the only way to get up. They go at specific times so don’t do what we did and mess this bit up – organise accordingly.

Also: the Cathedral lights up at night throughout summer in a quite spectacular light show . It’s a half-hour whirligig of colour and patterns, which is amazing and slightly weird. And importantly, there’s Champagne-in-a-tent too.

Reims walk night views of Cathedral

2. Palais du Tau > Place Royale

Continue walking round to the right of the Cathedral and Palais du Tau, veering left onto Rue Cardinal de Lorraine, keeping the Palais du Tau on your left.

A sunken garden will appear to your left. Follow the boundary of this garden, turn left onto Cours Anatole France. You get towering views of the other side of the Cathedral called the Gallery of the Kings (loads of kings perched on this side), and it’s much less busy.

Veer away from the garden towards Rue du Grand Credo, and you’ll soon arrive in Place Royale. A nice broad square, the Cathedral still peeps over the top of the elegant façades (mostly important-looking government offices).

3. Place Royale > Halles du Boulingrin

Wander onto Rue Colbert across the other side of the Place. This street takes you directly to the statuesque Hôtel de Ville. You pass through the Place du Forum which has a few of those said beautiful bars and cafes to lounge around in.

Reims walk to the Town Hall

After this, you arrive in Place de l’Hôtel de Ville with the town hall in front of you. Go round to the right of the building and continue on Rue de Mars. This street has loads of eateries, but hang on if you’re walking on a Wednesday or Saturday in the morning as you’re about to stumble across Reims’ food market . It’s in the art deco Halles du Boulingrin (on your right), and sells all sorts of fresh delicious stuff.

Reims walk art deco food hall

4. Halles du Boulingrin > Place Drouet d’Erlon

Return to the corner of the Halles du Boulingrin at which you arrived and continue on the Rue de Mars. At the junction turn left and through the Porte de Mars – the widest arch in the Roman world, no less. Continue straight ahead through the Square of the Porte de Mars. You will see ahead of you a conveniently placed champagne cave – tours and tastes and potentially end of walk available.

Continuing around Reims though: from the Square of the Porte de Mars in the park walk along Allées des 7 et 8 Mai 1945 until you come to a road. Cross it and the tram lines into a shady circular park called Square Colbert – main station on your right. Walk to the far left corner of the park and the Place Drouet d’Erlon presents itself as a pretty, tree-lined avenue.

Reims walk with bars and cafes

The street is bit of a magnet for tourists, with lots of bars and brasseries. It’s great to soak in – our favourite was the stylish Ernest Hemmingway bar on the right as you walk along.

Reims walk Ernest Hemmingway bar

5. Place Drouet d’Erlon > Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims

Turn left when you get to the gold topped fountain (a river representation, apparently) on Place Drouet d’Erlon onto Rue de l’Étape.

Wander down until you reach the wide boulevard of Cours Jean-Baptiste Langlet. It’s covered in green lawn and tram lines, (they ding, don’t worry) and leads to the cathedral on your right. Stroll back towards the the cathedral.

Reims walk trams

You are now back to the cathedral complex with the statue of Joan of Arc tucked away to your right. (She’s here, by the way, because she persuaded Charles VII to have his coronation in Reims in 1429. Told you it’s awesome). Go straight on into the cathedral and stand in awe in its huge Gothic interior. For us, inside is all about the 600 years of stained glass windows, all flooded with colour and light. Oh, and getting up the tower for Reims unfolding before you…

Diy walking tour: history walk through reims, france.

Walking Tour Reims

You are almost certainly in Reims for one thing, and that thing has bubbles. As the unofficial capital of the Champagne Region, Reims lures in tourists and locals alike with its stately champagne houses and hectares upon hectares of neat rows of vineyards growing the next vintage for Moet and Chandon, Veuve Clicquot or Perrier Jouet.

What most might not realize though, is that Reims has been at the center of much of France’s most important moments. Additionally, during WWI, Reims sustained enormous damage and in WWII would eventually be the site of the signing of the peace treaty that ended that war. If you know me you know I love champagne, but in between sips, let’s take a moment to appreciate the rich history of the town with a stroll around to some of these monuments and sites, one of which literary dates to ancient times.

On this DIY Walking Tour of Reims we will take you in historical (chronological) order but certainly, rearrange the stops as it suits your day. Maybe you’re more into the history of the Romans in Reims, or perhaps WWII really interested you. There is something for almost any history buff (or just your friend who really doesn’t care about Chardonnay vs. Munier grapes) in Reims so let’s get going.

Porte de Mars (3rd Century AD)

We begin our day going all the way back to the third century AD when the area that would be known as Reims first became a major player in the world’s stage. Porte de Mars is an ancient triumphal arch built after the Romans brought major roads to Reims. Named for a nearby temple of Mars, the Porte de Mars was 13 meters high and 32 meters long, making it the widest arch in the Roman world.

Porte de Mars

Originally, the arch was surrounded by various other buildings and in 1817 those buildings were removed, giving us the structure we see today. If you are especially interested in monuments of this era, be sure to stop by The Cryptoporticus , which is another well-preserved third-century relic found closer to the cathedral.

Notre Dame de Reims (Reims Cathedral, 5th Century AD)

Moving along in time to about the 5th century, our walking tour brings us to  Notre Dame de Reims (Our Lady of Reims), more commonly called Reims Cathedral. While the building you see today was completed in the 15th century, the original house of worship was thought to have been founded in the 5th century by Bishop Saint Nicasius , the patron saint of smallpox victims. Reims Cathedral has seen literally centuries of history of France and the town of Reims. It is most famous for being the location of the coronation of French kings. King Clovis was converted to catholicism here and would become the first king of the Franks, uniting the Frankish tribes under one ruler.

During The Hundred Year’s War, both Reims and its cathedral were under siege. Joan of Arc helped to lead the March to Reims, liberating the cathedral which then allowed  Charles VII of France to be crowned king. Don’t miss the powerful statue of Joan of Arc atop her warhorse, which sits in the shadows of the cathedral she helped free.

Notre Dame de Reims

The cathedral would see many more centuries of war throughout its lifetime. During WWI the cathedral became a hospital, with thousands of hay bales covering the floor to house the wounded. The cathedral, as well as the city as a whole, was almost completely devastated by bombardments during World War I. It would again sustain further damage when WWII arrived in France.

One of our favorite things about the cathedral is the collection of enormous stained glass windows. A few of the original windows have survived but the newer ones are perhaps even more interesting. Many of them depict the history of Reims and its tradition of wine-making. The detail and story-telling are truly impressive and cannot be missed on your day about town.

Today, the cathedral is a beautiful, and peaceful, center point of the city of Reims. Events of all kinds are held in and around the building every year. If you’re looking for a great spot to stop for a sip of champagne, just next to the church is Terroir des Rois, a wonderful wine shop selling champagne by the glass. If a picnic is on your itinerary, walk around back to Square Henri Deneux, which is a lovely green space perfect for a snack al fresco.

walking Tour Reims

Palace of Tau (12th Century AD)

Just adjacent to Notre Dame de Reims is the Palace of Tau . Named for its T-shape (greek “tau”), the bishop’s palace was historically used to house the kings of France prior to their coronation in the cathedral. They would be dressed and prepared for the ceremonies in the palace before heading over to the cathedral for the coronation pomp.

Today the palace houses a great museum with artifacts pertaining to the cathedral and the coronations that occurred there as well as treasures from the history of the champagne region.

Tickets to visit the exhibit are 8€ for adults. (Under 18 are free as well as any disabled person plus one accompanying person – love to see it)

Musée de la Reddition (Lycee Roosevelt School, 1945)

Our next stop is a very unassuming school building, known today as Lycee Roosevelt. In 1945 it was known as le College Moderne et Technique de Reims and would become one of the most important landmarks of the second world war. On May 7th, 1945 in the very early morning hours, the treaty that ended World War II would be signed in a room on the second floor of the school.

At the time, the building was the operational headquarters of SHAEF, the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force, led by General Eisenhower. After Adolf Hitler’s suicide on April 30, command fell to Admiral Karl Donitz. Donitz would accompany Generaloberst Alfred Jodl, commander of the Wehrmacht to the signing, ending the war.

Walking Tour Reims

Today there is a modest museum, Musée de la Reddition , attached to the school building. You can view dozens of artifacts from the war as well as stand in the treaty room, which was left completely untouched after the signing. It makes for a relatively quick stop and we really enjoyed our visit.

Admission to the museum is 5€, with discounts for those under 18 and over 65 years of age. As with the palace, admission is free for persons with disabilities and an accompanying person.

Carnegie Library of Reims (Bibliothèque Carnegie de Reims)

Our last stop of today’s walking tour brings us back around near the cathedral and the city center. As we have covered in today’s history walk, Reims sustained major damage during WWI. After the war, prominent American philanthropist and industrialist, Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. That endowment selected three “front line” cities in Europe that were especially hard hit during the war for gifts to build, or rebuild, beautiful new libraries. Reims was selected as the “front line” city of France and the new library was completed in 1927.

walking tour reims

The Carnegie Library of Reims is a lovely Art Deco building that is worth even just a quick stroll-by, although if you have the time be sure to check out the inside as well. The architecture is truly beautiful and the building serves as a great reminder of our capacity to rebuild after tragedy.

Entrance to the library is free although they do offer guided tours for a charge.

Historic Tour of Reims (With Maps!)

This website uses affiliate links which earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Most people come to Reims lured by its bubbles. Known as the de facto capital of the Champagne Region, Reims boasts majestic champagne houses and vast expanses of vineyards, preparing the next batch for renowned brands like Moet and Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, or Perrier Jouet.

But beyond the fizz, Reims holds a profound historical significance. Many might not know that this town has witnessed numerous pivotal moments in French history. It bore immense damage during WWI and later, in WWII, was the stage for the peace treaty’s signing that concluded the war. While I have a penchant for champagne, it’s essential to pause and recognize the town’s historical depth. As we wander its streets, you’ll discover landmarks that harken back even to ancient times.

In our self guided Historic Walking Tour of Reims , we’ll navigate chronologically through its history. Yet, feel free to customize your journey. Whether you’re fascinated by the Roman era in Reims or the events of WWII, there’s something here for every history enthusiast—even if you’re someone who can’t distinguish between Chardonnay and Munier grapes. Let’s embark on this adventure!

Porte de Mars (3rd Century AD)

Porte De Mars

Durocortorum , the oppidum the Gallic  Remes tribe built in the early 1st century AD, grew to become Reims. The Remes’ good fortune was due to the fact that they didn’t join the Gallic rebellion during the Gallic War, but took side with the Roman Empire. In return for their support, the Romans made Durocortorum a federated city and awarded it its independence. It also became the capital of the  Gallia Belgica , one of the three provinces the Romans created in Gaul after the conquest. A thick stone wall encompassed the city during the 3rd century barbarian invasions.

The Porte de Mars, is an ancient triumphal arch built in the third century AD, and stands as a testament to when the Romans introduced major roads to Reims. Named after a temple of Mars that stood nearby, this majestic arch stretched 13 meters in height and 32 meters in length, proudly bearing the title of the widest arch of the Roman era. Initially, other buildings accompanied the arch, but come 1817, they were cleared away, revealing the solitary structure we see today.

Cryptoporticus (3rd Century AD)

Reims Cryptoporticus

The Cryptoporticus in Reims is an ancient underground gallery or passageway, dating back to the third century AD. Constructed by the Romans, this structure originally supported the forum, which was the central public space in the city. It consists of three parallel vaulted galleries and was used for various purposes over time, including storage. Located near the city’s cathedral, the Cryptoporticus offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient history of Reims and the architectural practices of the Roman era. Today, it stands as one of the city’s important archaeological sites and a testament to its Roman heritage.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame (12th Century AD)

Cathedrale Notre Dame Reims

Nestled at the heart of Reims, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame stands as an emblematic beacon, its majestic towers marking the city’s skyline. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is undeniably among France’s most exceptional cathedrals and a crowning jewel of Gothic artistry.

Clovis, Frankish king was baptized by Remi, bishop of Reims on Christmas Day 498 in a baptistery which was a little to the of where north of the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Reims stands, on the ruins of the old Roman baths.

In 816 took place the first royal coronation in Reims, the one of Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne. The ceremony which lasted generally five hours used to take place in Notre-Dame Cathedral, as long ago as the Cathedral was built. It was followed by the coronation banquet in the Tau palace and a pilgrimage to the tomb of the bishop Remi, in the Basilica which bears his name. The most memorable coronation remains the one of the Dauphin Charles VII being lead into Reims by Joan of Arc on the 17th of July 1429 after the raising of the siege of Orleans. The city became for 10 centuries onward – until 1825 – the place of coronation of all the kings of France – with the exception of the Protestant Henri IV. In total, 33 kings got crowned in Reims, the last one being Charles X in 1825.

The cathedral you see was constructed in the 13th century, this architectural wonder is distinguished by its exquisite façade that evokes the intricacy of lace. Over 2,000 statues enrich its form, a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of the era. Dominating the cathedral’s west front are three elaborately sculpted doorways, crowned by a radiant rose window. Directly above, the renowned Gallery of Kings stretches, its statues residing in artful niches. The central doorway’s detailed reliefs narrate the Virgin Mary’s life. A whimsical touch to the façade is the delightful ‘Sourire de Reims’ or the Smiling Angel statue. Stepping inside, visitors are enveloped in a grand expanse, a harmonious blend of reverence and light. This ethereal glow emanates from numerous stained-glass windows, punctuating the cathedral’s vast nave. Modern stained-glass artworks by luminaries such as Marc Chagall and Imi Knoebel enhance the cathedral’s historical charm.

The Basilica Of St-Remi (12th Century AD)

Reims Basilica Saint Remi

The third among Reims’ quartet of UNESCO heritage sites, this ancient abbey takes us on a journey to the 11th century. It was erected on the grounds of a former chapel, the final resting place of Saint Remigius. This notable Bishop of Reims is celebrated for baptizing King Clovis, a transformative moment in French Christian history. Pope Leo IX consecrated this abbey in 1049.

The architectural marvel, as we see it today, is a blend of the original structure and subsequent additions spanning from the 12th to the 19th centuries. It stands as Northern France’s grandest Romanesque church. The abbey’s exterior and interior weave together a tapestry of diverse architectural styles. Once inside, visitors are greeted by a grand aisle, an elongated spectacle stretching almost 400 feet, yet maintaining a width of just 85 feet. This harmonious blend of scale and proportion leaves a lasting impression.

Palace of Tau (12th Century AD)

Palais Du Tau Et Cathédrale

Right next to Notre Dame de Reims stands the Palace of Tau. Its name, derived from its T-shape reminiscent of the Greek letter “tau”, signifies its historical importance. Traditionally, this bishop’s palace served as the residence for the kings of France before their coronation events in the adjacent cathedral. Here, in the palace’s grand rooms, they would dress and ready themselves for the elaborate coronation ceremonies.

Today, the palace has transformed into a captivating museum, housing a collection of artefacts related to the cathedral and the numerous coronations it witnessed. Moreover, it showcases treasures that narrate the rich history of the champagne region.

Entry to the exhibit costs 8€ for adults. Impressively, those under 18 and individuals with disabilities (along with one accompanying person) can enjoy free admission—a commendable inclusion.

Musee-Hotel Le Vergeur (16th Century AD)

Musée-hôtel Le Vergeur

Just a stone’s throw away from the Roman cryptoporticus rests a remarkable 16th-century edifice. This house, with foundations dating back to the 13th century, once belonged to the affluent merchant, Nicolas Le Vergeur. Later, it became the residence of Hugues Krafft, a fervent collector. After his passing, Krafft bequeathed his residence and its extensive collection to the Association of the Friends of Old Reims.

Visually, the building itself is a treat for architecture enthusiasts. It showcases fascinating historical design elements, from its imposing indoor fireplace to its half-timbered external framework. Its gardens, meticulously maintained, further enhance its allure, making a visit to this place deeply rewarding even before stepping inside.

The interior, however, elevates the experience to another level. Visitors are presented with a treasure trove of artifacts. Notable among them are the original sketches by the famed artist Albrecht Durer and an exquisite collection of Meissen porcelain. The house-museum also showcases a diverse array of art pieces, interwoven with gothic furnishings, ensuring that visitors are engrossed for hours, exploring and absorbing its rich history and artistic splendor.

Musée de la Reddition (20th Century AD)

Musée De La Reddition -World War II Museum

Next on our journey is a seemingly ordinary educational structure, presently recognized as Lycee Roosevelt. However, its past resonates with historical significance. In 1945, it bore the title ‘le College Moderne et Technique de Reims’, and against all expectations, it played an integral role in global history. On the dawn of May 7th, 1945, within a room on its second floor, the pivotal treaty ending World War II was inked.

During this period, this edifice served as the base for SHAEF – the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force, under the leadership of General Eisenhower. Following Adolf Hitler’s demise on April 30, leadership transitioned to Admiral Karl Donitz. Accompanying Generaloberst Alfred Jodl, the Wehrmacht’s commander, Donitz witnessed the historic treaty’s signing, culminating the war.

Today, adjacent to the school is the Musée de la Reddition, a humble museum. It invites visitors to explore myriad war artifacts and step into the treaty room, preserved in its original state post-signing. Our experience here was brief yet profoundly memorable.

The museum charges a nominal fee of 5€ for entry. Concessions are available for young visitors below 18 and seniors over 65. Echoing the Palace of Tau’s inclusivity, persons with disabilities and their companion are granted free admission.

Carnegie Library of Reims (20th Century AD)

Reims CarnegieLibrary

Our walking tour culminates near the heart of the city, in proximity to the cathedral and bustling city center. Throughout our journey today, we’ve traced how Reims bore the brunt of the destruction during WWI. In the aftermath of the war, Andrew Carnegie, the esteemed American industrialist and philanthropist, set up the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. This initiative targeted three “front line” European cities that were particularly ravaged by the war, offering them the means to construct new, or revamp existing, libraries. France’s chosen “front line” city was none other than Reims, and by 1927, the city showcased a splendid new library.

The Carnegie Library of Reims, designed in the striking Art Deco style, is certainly worth a leisurely walk-by, or better yet, a venture inside if time permits. Its architecture is a testament to the resilience of humanity and our ability to rise from the ashes of calamity.

While entrance to the library is complimentary, those keen on an in-depth experience can opt for guided tours at a nominal fee.

A Guide to The Best Things to do in Reims, Champagne

Situated around 100 KM North-East of Paris (or around a forty-five-minute train ride away from Paris if you opt for the fast route) , Reims is the gateway to Champagne, a historic French region famed for its bubbly tipple. Here’s your guide to the best things to do in Reims , as well as top attractions and travel tips to know before visiting.

reims cathedral

If you’re thinking about seeing a lot of attractions and monuments while in Reims, Consider booking the Reims City Pass , which includes a guided tour of Reims Cathedral and access to public transportation.

To work out whether or not the pass is worth it for you or not, add up the cost of the individual attractions you wish to visit and see if you’ll save money. Find more details here.

Hidden Gems & Secret Spots in Reims You Should Know About

Introducing Reims

What is reims known for, practical tips, tricks & advice for visiting reims, how long do you need in reims, seek out hidden gems, musée de la reddition, la porte de mars, halles boulingrin , hôtel de ville, musée hotel le vergeur, biscuits fossier, marvel at the foujita chapel, café du palais, cathédrale notre dame de reims, palais du tau, carnegie library, basilique saint-remi, see art deco architecture, see the venetian carousel, visit the reims christmas market, take a day trip to the vineyards, where to stay in reims.

A historical city boasting the Coronation place of twenty-five French Kings and one of the most impressive Gothic Cathedrals in Europe, Reims is also the gateway to the Champagne region , the world-famous sparkling white Provided that you plan your visit accordingly, the entirety of the city can easily be explored in one to three days.

Reims is one of the largest towns in the historic region of Champagne. The other major cities in the area are Troyes and Epernay . If you have to prioritise visiting just two towns, I recommend heading to Epernay and Reims and skipping out on a visit to Troyes. For more ideas, check out our Champagne itinerary .

Cafe du Palais, Unusual things to do in Reims, Champagne, France

As you have probably gathered, Reims is most famous for its association to the Champagne Houses and Champagne production in the surrounding countryside. The city is also well-known for its historic cathedral, in which over 30 kings were crowned.

The best way to get around the French city is by foot considering that almost all of the attractions and things to do in Reims are grouped together. It’s easier to visit the city on a clear day considering that almost all Reims attractions include at least one or two outdoor elements!

Otherwise, you should know that while much of Reims is pretty flat, as in the rest of France, there are plenty of cobbled lanes. As such, be sure to wear your comfiest walking shoes and leave your high heels at home!

Le Jardin du Museée Le Vergeur, Reims, France

Around the city, there are plenty of places to eat, drink, and caffeinate. I particularly enjoyed the pizza and ambience of Pizzeria L’Antica.

Located in the shadow of Reims Cathedral, it’s the perfect point for a halfway stop to enjoy a bite to eat at incredibly reasonable prices. After all the lunchtime menu I sampled was €9,50 for a pizza and glass of wine!

While most of the attractions in Reims are free to visit, a few activities are paid for only. If you’re thinking of visiting several museums, making use of public transport, and wish to receive discounts on cellar visits, I highly recommend that you consider purchasing the Reims City Card .

Café du Palais: A Delightful Art Collection & Bistro in Reims, Champagne, France

To be honest, you could probably see the main attractions of Reims in the course of a single day. If you prefer to explore cities at a slower pace, then aim to stay in the city for two days.

Best things to do in Reims

As the gateway to the Champagne region of France, i.e. the only place in the world that’s allowed to produce the renowned sparkling tipple, Reims is a must-see for any Francophile who wishes to explore l’Hexagone in greater depth. And while Reims may be pretty popular among tourists, there are still many secret spots in Reims worth discovering.

Champagne Stained Glass Window in Reims Cathedral, France

You may well not know this, but there’s a museum on the fringes of old town Reims which commemorates the actual site of the surrender. Created in 1985 and open from Wednesday through to Monday, the cultural space comprises of several exhibition spaces, as well as the surrender room of May 7, 1945.

From the Musée de la Reddition, it’s just a short walk away across a few roads and bridges to reach the Roman triumphal arch, which is another must-see attraction in Reims.

Dating all the way back to Roman times, the Reims Triumphal Arch was once the widest in the entirety of the Roman world. Well-preserved, the arch is reminiscent of triumphal arches in other parts of France such as that of Orange and was constructed during the 3rd Century CE. Today, the arch is the widest remaining Roman archway in the world.

Porte de Mars, Roman Triumphal Arch

Art-deco in architectural style and acting as the main covered food market for the city of Reims, the Halles Boulingrin are open on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Wander in during opening hours and you can expect vendors selling sausages, cheese, and wine, as well as other local specialities from Eastern France.

As is the case with every city in France, Reims has its own town hall, bien sûr. Imposing and grand, the Hôtel de Ville can be found in the heart of the city and is adorned with French flags.

There has been a town hall on site since the end of the 15th-century. Various rebuilds over the years were destroyed for one reason or another and so the town hall you see today was built at the beginning of the 20th-century.

reims hotel de ville

Named for a French aristocrat who lived in the city during the 16th-century, today the Museum of Vergeur houses a collection of period furnished rooms. One particular highlight of the small Reims museum that shouldn’t be missed is an original series of prints of Apocalypse and the Large Passion by Albrecht Dürer.

In operation since the middle of the 18th-century, the Fossier Biscuits and Confectionery manufacturing company produces a wide array of sweets, gingerbread, and marzipan-based sweets.

Situated a little way away outside of the city centre, the Foujita Chapel was built between 1965 and 1966. Named for the artist artist Tsuguharu Foujita, the chapel is well worth a trip to in order to enjoy all of the beautiful frescoes which cover the interior of the ecclesiastical building.

Foujita Chapel

Hands down one of the most beautiful venues, the Café Palais is to be found in the very heart of the Champagne city and steps away from the iconic Reims Cathedral. The café has been family-run and owned since the 1930s.

You simply must visit Café du Palais at least once while in Reims, if only to stop for a quick coffee! After all, step inside at any given moment and you’ll soon be greeted by piece after piece of artwork from the private collections of the owners.

From a drawing by Marc Chagall to a late 1920s stained glass window adorning the ceiling of the establishment, there’s something to look at in pretty much every direction. If you’re looking for a delightful rest-stop on this Reims walking tour, look no further!

Cafe du Palais, Unusual things to do in Reims, Champagne, France

Imposing, grand, and situated in the very heart of the historic city centre, Notre Dame Cathedral is a fantastic example of Gothic architecture that’s a must-see while in Reims.

Stunning, and the place where no less than twenty-five French monarchs were crowned King of France, today the Cathedral is a must-see attraction in Reims and merits a visit of at least a few hours.

For more information, be sure to check out our Reims Cathedral guide. If you’re interested in learning more about the cathedral together with a local guide, book a guided tour like this one.

Best known for where many Kings visited, many of whom were coronated in the Reims Cathedral (which lies just steps away) , the Palais du Tau is probably best-associated with being the palace of the Archbishop of Reims.

Today, the iconic Reims attractions has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1991 and now operates as a museum. Purchase your Palace of Tau ticket here in advance.

Built in the Art Deco style with funds from the Scottish-American Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the Carnegie Library is one of over 2,500 such Carnegie libraries that were constructed in the latter half of the 19th-century and first half of the 20th-century. The Carnegie Library in Reims can be visited today and is used by members of the public for study purposes.

Salle de Lecture (Readers Room), Carnegie Library, Reims, France

Romanesque and simply stunning, the Saint-Remi Basilica dates back to the 11th-century and is often touted as the largest Romanesque church in Northern France .

The ecclesiastical building is alleged to have been constructed on the site of the chapel of St. Christophe where St. Remi was buried and is now free to visit.

Basilique Saint-Remi

Following WWII, the city of Reims was largely destroyed and so was mainly reconstructed in the 1920s. At the time, Art Deco was the most popular architectural style and so many of the new buildings in town were constructed in this manner.

Today, some of the top Art Deco architecture in Reims can be found in the form of cinéma Opéra, the Lallement building, and Le cellier d’expédition Mumm.

Jacquart Mosaic, Reims, France

Of course, it would appear as if every French city is equipped with its own stunning carousel and Reims is no exception. The Venetian Carousel of Reims is located on Place d’Erlon.

If you’re feeling particularly festive, then you may well want to visit the Reims Christmas Market , which takes place for around a month each year. Visit at night and you can expect to enjoy beautiful illuminations projected directly onto Reims Cathedral.

The Reims Christmas market boasts dozens of stalls that serve up traditional Christmas market food , not to mention that it’s home to a number of chalets which sell unique souvenir and gifts, many made in France.

France is a country full of countless beauties. One of them is the city of Reims, which is located in the Champagne or Grand Est region and is one of the most populated towns in the Marne department.

This city has more than 2,000 years of history, and is home to several monuments that have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

On our private walking tour of Reims you will get up close and personal with world-famous landmarks such as the Notre Dame Cathedral, which is the building that served as the setting for the coronations of the kings of France for almost 1,000 years.

You will also discover the Tau Palace, an emblematic royal complex that housed kings and nobles in medieval times.

It will also be a perfect tour for you to admire up close the hillsides, wineries and wine houses with the most renowned in the world.

The entire tour will be exclusive and personalized with the company of a private guide , who will be in charge of providing you with the most important facts and information about each of the most attractive sites.

The meeting point with the guide will be in a central location in the city so that you don’t waste a minute of time on your tour.

The guide will also take you to the hidden gems of Reims. This way you will get the most out of your guided tour.

Points of interest of the private walking tour of Reims

In the Champagne region there are more than 4,000 winegrowers who are responsible for making champagne, which is the most famous sparkling wine in the world. There are more than 352 million bottles of this beverage stored in wineries and wine houses.

Moreover , the medieval architecture with a Gothic touch of the city is simply breathtaking.

Get to know this splendid city at your own pace, on this private walking tour of Reims (2 hours) to see the different points of interest:

The Cathedral of Reims

This magnificent Gothic-style cathedral was one of the first to be built in France during the Middle Ages. It has been the site of the coronations of French kings for almost a millennium.

Also, the coronation of Charles VII took place there, where the heroine Joan of Arc was present.

In the cathedral you can admire its stained glass windows and some statues located on the outside. You will also see the famous sculpture “the Angel of the Smile” created by Marc Chagall. But the most imposing is its gothic facade, which is worthy of many postcard photographs.

The Palace of Tau

The Cathedral of Notre Dame de Reims and the Palace of Tau are linked by history, since in that palace the kings who were going to be crowned stayed to prepare themselves before the solemn act.

It is currently a museum that houses various royal collections. Therefore, it is a fascinating place to visit.

Le Place du Forum

In the Forum Square you will find some remains of Roman architecture, reminiscent of the influence that civilization had in France.

In this area you will also see many galleries, Art Decó buildings and other buildings that stand out for their unique beauty.

Villa Demoiselle

This imposing Belle Époque building blends well with the Gothic style of Reims.

It belongs to the owners of Pommery champagnes, and is a place that impresses with every detail in its structure.

Famous champagne houses

If you are a champagne lover, this excursion will allow you to discover the famous champagne houses of Reims.

The most striking thing about this tour is that its galleries are under the city and extend for more than 250 kilometers. These wineries house the most bubbly campaign in the world.

In the champagne houses you will explore the tools and techniques used for the production of this drink, as well as the most famous international champagne brands. Obviously, the space for tasting could not be missing.

But that’s not all, since on this walking tour you will enjoy other points of interest such as:

  • The ruins of Porte de Mars.
  • The Basilica of Saint Remi.
  • Carnegie Library.
  • Fort de la Pompelle, among others.

During the 2 hour tour you will marvel at all there is to see in Reims. And if you are a lover of bubbly wine, you can take a private tour to the best Champagne wineries from Reims for a different and very relaxing day.
