One of the best jazz rock fusion bands of all time. The show was amazing , I hadn't seen them perform in about thirty years and they were better than ever. All are great musicians and you will not be disappointed in their perform. This was a small venue with about 700 seats , yet they performed for about 2 hours. And bought the house down, go see the show if you get the chance!

Great! They played old songs in a medley. 'Het paard' has great accoustics and is highly reachable. The bass (Ambush) and drummer(Pearson) are for me new bandmembers. I only know the songs from 40 years ago and stopped listnening records afterwards.

I will definitly lookup new songs as long Beckenstein, Hernandez and Schuman.

I have been a Spyro Fan since the 80's but last night show was one of their best. Jay said the material they play last night is part of a new album. I can't wait. Great Performance especially considering the venue. BB King's is nice place to listen to a live performance.

Greatest musicians that I have ever seen on one stage at the same time. The drummer's solo was the best and bass player was so cool. The music had so many tempos in every song. For a 67 year old man - this was the best jazz show I had ever seen.

Absolutely fantastic concert. The band was tight and were having a blast. The was really crisp. Jay Beckenstein was spot on and never missed a lick. Scott Ambush performed a bass solo that was beyond comprehension.

These guys were so amazing! All five virtuoso musicians! Great show!! I’ve followed them for over 30 years and this is the first time I’ve seen them live. So glad I got the chance to finally see them!

Due to touring and traveling interruptions with the Spyro Gyra tour and Hurricane Ian, a new date has been made available to play at the King Center Studio Theatre on Thursday, January 19, 2023.   

October 2019 witnessed the release of Spyro Gyra’s first album of new material in six years. Once again, they have upset expectations by recording an album of all cover songs. In a nod to drawing heavily from their earlier pop and rock influences,  Vinyl Tap . It’s going to upset some expectations of a collection of romantic favorites by a contemporary jazz artist. Be prepared for some surprises, like a Latin big band approach to Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love”. Or maybe a stunning arrangement of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home”. Or maybe a slowed down, bluesy version of Squeeze’s “Tempted” might be more your style. These are going to be some of the highlights of the Vinyl Tap tour. “My hope is that our music has the same effect on the audience that it does on me,” says group leader Jay Beckenstein. “I’ve always felt that music, and particularly instrumental music, has this non-literal quality that lets people travel to a place where there are no words. Whether it’s touching their emotions or connecting them to something that reminds them of something much bigger than themselves, there’s this beauty in music that’s not connected to sentences. It’s very transportive. I would hope that when people hear our music or come to see us, they’re able to share that with us.”

Jazz fusion band Spyro Gyra – not to be confused with the British folk-rock band Spirogyra – was founded in Buffalo, New York in 1974 by saxophonist Jay Beckenstein and keyboardist Jeremy Wall. The other founding members included Jim Kurzdofer (bass), Tom Walsh (drums), Umbopha Emile Latimer (percussion), and Tom Schuman (keyboards). They released their self-titled debut album independently in 1977, signing a deal with Amherst Records, who reissued the album nationally the following year with a different cover.

The album featured the single “Shaker Song”, which reached Number 90 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart. Signing to Infinity/MCA Records, the band released their second album, Morning Dance, in 1979. The album hit Number 11 on the UK Albums chart and Number 27 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. The title track was released as a single reaching Number 1 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary Singles chart and Number 17 on the UK singles chart.

Catching the Sun, their third album was released in 1980 and proved to be yet another success. After nine more albums on MCA, the band switched to GRP Records for another six albums. They continued to release albums for other labels including Windham Hill and Heads Up before coming back to their first label, Amherst for the albums A Foreign Affair (2011) and Vinyl Tap (2019). Over the years, the band’s line-up has changed with Beckenstein the only member of the band featured on all of their recordings. Founding member Jim Kurzdorfer died in 2011 of cancer. Spyro Gyra has long been known to its peers in the contemporary jazz world as a “well-oiled road machine” due to its relentless schedule of over 45 years of performing. They have logged over 10,000 shows on six continents and released 35 albums, garnering platinum and gold records along the way. Spyro Gyra rose from humble beginnings in Buffalo, New York in 1974 to their current international prominence in jazz. Their energy and joy in concert match their unmatched musicality.

You might think that Spyro Gyra’s leader and saxophonist Jay Beckenstein might welcome a break in its 45+ years of non-stop, year-round performances. After all, much of his adult life has been centered around the recording and performing activities of this now legendary group. 

Fans of the band are familiar with the group’s rise to international prominence from humble beginnings in Buffalo, New York. That’s when a few area working musicians arranged for a weekly gig of playing less commercial music in a local club on everyone’s night off. So humble a beginning, there was no name for the band so they were only known as “Tuesday Night Jazz Jam”. Soon the word got around and the core group was joined by many of the city’s musicians to come and have some fun. And customers started showing up, too, prompting the club owner to press Beckenstein for a band name for the club’s new sign. Beckenstein offered up this late night, tipsy answer, “You can call it ‘spirogyra’”, an alga that he had studied once. The following week, he came back and there it was, misspelling and all, and so it began in 1974.
