Fall 2023 music preview: The season's most anticipated albums, tours, and festivals

Fall 2023 music preview: the season's most anticipated albums, tours, and festivals, taylor swift revisits 1989 , keanu reeves resurrects dogstar, pop queen kylie minogue returns, and country legend dolly parton is ready to ... rock.

It seems inconceivable that summer is already ending, but here we are. And that’s okay, because it means it’s time for fall, one of the very best times for cozy music listening. This autumn, we’re getting some big pop albums from the likes of Kylie Minogue, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, and a new version of 1989 from Taylor Swift . We’re also getting big rock albums from (checks notes) Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dolly Parton , and Keanu Reeves, who recently reunited with Dogstar after a 23-year break. Other artists dropping albums this fall include Slowdive, James Blake, the Chemical Brothers, Mitski, Animal Collective, Wilco, Sufjan Stevens, and the Mountain Goats. And we’re getting plenty of tours, concerts, and music festivals, too.

Slowdive: Everything Is Alive [September 1]

1990s shoegaze legends Slowdive resurfaced in 2017 with an incredible self-titled album, their first in 22 years. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait another two decades for more, as their new album Everything Is Alive will arrive at the beginning of September. Although it’s dedicated to singer Rachel Goswell’s mother and drummer Simon Scott’s father, who both passed away in 2020, Everything Is Alive feels more comforting than mournful. “It wouldn’t feel right to make a really dark record right now,” vocalist Neil Halstead says. “The album is quite eclectic emotionally, but it does feel hopeful.”

Courtney Barnett: End Of The Day (Music From The Film Anonymous Club) [September 8]

Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett might be one of indie rock’s greatest lyricists, but her new album is going in a very different direction. Originally created with Stella Mozgawa to score the 2021 documentary Anonymous Club , End Of the Day consists of 17 instrumental improvisations that eschew Barnett’s usual sardonic storytelling and guitar riffage in favor of meditative ambient bliss.

James Blake: Playing Robots Into Heaven [September 8]

Before he embarked on his career as a melancholic digital-age crooner, James Blake made his name on a series of forward-thinking dance music EPs. His new album Playing Robots Into Heaven is touted as a return to his experimental electronic roots, featuring a tracklist free of big-name guests and inviting glitchy club beats and bloopy ambient instrumentals into his signature sound.

Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS [September 8]

Former Disney Channel actress Olivia Rodrigo emerged as a fully formed pop superstar on her 2021 debut SOUR. The young singer-songwriter is getting ready to follow it up with the new album GUTS, and the two singles we’ve heard so far, the grandly theatrical “Vampire” and the ’90s pop-rock blast “bad idea right?,” have both been fantastic. “For me, this album is about growing pains and trying to figure out who I am at this point in my life,” Rodrigo says. “I feel like I grew 10 years between the ages of 18 and 20—it was such an intense period of awkwardness and change. I think that’s all just a natural part of growth, and hopefully the album reflects that.”

Romy: Mid Air [September 8]

The xx’s Romy Madley Croft is stepping out of the shadows and onto the dance floor on her debut solo album Mid Air, produced by frequent collaborators like Fred again.., Stuart Price, and Jamie xx. “ Mid Air is a collection of songs celebrating love, navigating loss and exploring identity,” she explains. “It’s musically inspired by dance music ... it’s a love letter to the queer clubs I first went to when I was growing up and people I met there and the music I heard that has made me feel more alive and less alone.”

Sparklehorse: Bird Machine [September 8]

Mark Linkous, the man behind the cultishly beloved indie rock project Sparklehorse, died by suicide in 2010. Thirteen years later, we’re getting an entirely new Sparklehorse album. Built from 2009 recordings with Steve Albini for a never-released Sparklehorse LP, Bird Machine was completed by Linkous’ brother Matt, sister-in-law Melissa, and producer Alan Weatherhead, augmenting the nearly finished songs with subtle additions while staying true to Linkous’ vision. “It was as though the songs let you know,” Melissa says. “Mark communicated these songs. We just did our best to transmit them.”

The Chemical Brothers: For That Beautiful Feeling [September 8]

The Chemical Brothers have been making music together for over three decades now, and “that beautiful feeling” of dance floor euphoria is what they’ve been chasing throughout their whole career. On For That Beautiful Feeling , which features collaborations with Beck and Halo Maud, the long-running U.K. electronic duo sound as fresh and vital as ever.

Alan Palomo: World Of Hassle [September 15]

You might know Alan Palomo as the mastermind behind Neon Indian, the electronic pop project that both pioneered and outlasted the late-’00s chillwave boom. World Of Hassle is Palomo’s first album to be released under his own name, but it isn’t exactly a radical shakeup in sound, presenting a playfully absurdist alternate reality full of squelchy synth-funk and gloriously chintzy ’80s nostalgia.

Explosions in the Sky: End [September 15]

Explosions in the Sky, masters of sweepingly cinematic post-rock, have a new album on the way. Despite its title, End isn’t the Texan band’s final album, just a meditation on “the concept of an ending—death, or the end of a friendship or relationship,” as they explain. “The end of a thing or a time can mean a stop, but it can also mean a beginning, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in comparison to what it becomes next.” Here’s hoping that End is only the beginning.

Mitski: The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We [September 15]

Mitski’s new album The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We features an orchestra arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson and a full 17-person choir arranged by Mitski herself. The choir is one of the most immediately striking elements of the record’s fantastic lead single “Bug Like An Angel,” which begins and ends in stark simplicity but nevertheless grasps the grand cathartic transcendence of Mitski’s finest material.

Nation of Language: Strange Disciple [September 15]

Over the past several years, New York synth-pop trio Nation of Language have gone from playing small local gigs to headlining international stages and late-night shows. Their well-deserved ascent continues with their third album Strange Disciple , recorded in East Williamsburg, New York, and produced by Holy Ghost!’s Nick Millhiser. NoL have never released a bad song, and with this record, that streak remains blessedly unbroken.

Riot Fest [September 15–17]

Chicago’s Riot Fest is returning to Douglass Park from September 15–17. Festival circuit mainstays Foo Fighters are headlining alongside Turnstile, the Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie, Queens of the Stone Age, the Cure, and the Mars Volta. The bill is rounded out by Mr. Bungle, Tegan And Sara, 100 gecs, the Gaslight Anthem, Death Grips, AFI, 070 Shake, the Breeders, Kim Gordon, Viagra Boys, PUP, George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Ride, Cults, Code Orange, White Reaper, Thursday, Jehnny Beth, Oso Oso, Origami Angel, Warpaint, Nothing, Screaming Females, Insane Clown Posse, and plenty more.

Devendra Banhart: Flying Wig [September 22]

If you only remember Devendra Banhart as the poster child for the 2000s freak folk movement, you might be surprised by how slick and cosmopolitan his new record sounds. Flying Wig is a synth-heavy collaboration with Banhart’s Mexican Summer labelmate Cate Le Bon. “It’s about transmuting despair into gratitude, wounds into forgiveness, and grief into praise,” Banhart says, and it “sounds like getting a very melancholic massage, or weeping, but in a really nice outfit … if I’m going to cry, I wanna do it in my best dress.”

Kylie Minogue: Tension [September 22]

It’s safe to say that “Padam Padam” was one of the songs of the summer. On her new album Tension , Australian pop queen Kylie Minogue is returning to the classic electro-pop sound that defined hits like 2003’s “Slow.” And if the rest of it is anywhere close to as catchy as “Padam Padam,” it’ll have your heart going padam padam in no time.

Animal Collective: Isn’t It Now? [September 29]

The songs on Animal Collective’s new album Isn’t It Now? were written during the same monthlong residency in the Tennessee countryside that birthed last year’s Time Skiffs . The rest were saved until they could be recorded in person with producer Russell Elevado (D’Angelo, The Roots, Common, Kamasi Washington), and the result is yet another sterling example of AnCo’s irrepressible creativity.

Armand Hammer: We Buy Diabetic Test Strips [September 29]

Since their last album together as Armand Hammer, 2021’s Haram , Elucid and billy woods have both released great solo albums. On We Buy Diabetic Test Strips , their upcoming LP and first for Fat Possum, they reunite alongside producers including JPEGMAFIA, El-P, Kenny Segal, and Black Noi$e and guests like Moor Mother, Soul Glo’s Pierce Jordan (aka Money Nicca), Pink Siifu, and Junglepussy. If you like your rap weird and noisy, this one’s for you.

Gunship: Unicorn [September 29]

British synthwave band Gunship have a new album on the horizon, and it boasts a whole lot of big name guest collaborators. Iconic filmmaker and musician John Carpenter, whose ’80s synthesizer work basically led to the genesis of the entire synthwave genre, is on the record, as is Bush’s Gavin Rossdale, Slayer’s Dave Lombardo, John Wick / Guardians Of The Galaxy composer Tyler Bates, Tina Turner/ Lost Boys saxophonist extraordinaire Tim Cappello, HEALTH, Britta Philips, and more.

Wilco: Cousin [September 29]

Jeff Tweedy has been remarkably prolific in the past few years, but what makes the upcoming Cousin special is the fact that it was produced by Welsh art-pop auteur Cate Le Bon, marking the first time in nearly two decades that Wilco have brought in an outside producer. “The amazing thing about Wilco is they can be anything,” Le Bon says. “They’re so mercurial, and there’s this thread of authenticity that flows through everything they do, whatever the genre, whatever the feel of the record. There aren’t many bands who are able to, this deep into a successful career, successfully change things up.”

Sufjan Stevens: Javelin [October 6]

Javelin, Sufjan Stevens’ first official solo album since 2020’s The Ascension , is billed as “his first in full solo singer-songwriter mode since 2015’s Carrie & Lowell ” and “a testament to classic ’70s Los Angeles studio recording sessions.” If you’re a certain kind of Sufjan fan, that’s enough to get you salivating. And if you’re any kind of Sufjan fan, the slowly unfurling majesty of lead single “So You Are Tired” is enough to win you over completely.

Dogstar: Somewhere Between The Power Lines And Palm Trees [October 6]

In the ’90s, Keanu Reeves played bass in an alt-rock band called Dogstar. They broke up in 2002. But the Keanaissance triumphs over all, and Dogstar are returning soon with their first album in 23 years, Somewhere Between The Power Lines And Palm Trees . Their music still sounds like classic ’90s alt-rock, and you’ll get a chance to see them on tour this fall.

Austin City Limits [October 6–8, October 13–15]

Image for article titled Fall 2023 music preview: The season's most anticipated albums, tours, and festivals

The headliners at the two-weekend Austin City Limits festival this year are a bit of a mixed bag of good and meh: Kendrick Lamar, Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, Odesza, the Lumineers, Shania Twain, Alanis Morissette, the 1975, Hozier. That said, there’s plenty of great stuff on the undercard, like Kali Uchis, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Maggie Rogers, Lil Yachty, Tove Lo, Death Grips, M83, Rina Sawayama, Tegan and Sara, the Breeders, the Walkmen, Jessie Ware, Ethel Cain, Yves Tumor, Sudan Archives, Miya Folick, Little Simz, Chromeo, and the Mars Volta.

Jamila Woods: Water Made Us [October 13]

Idiosyncratic neo-soul singer Jamila Woods is one of the leading lights of the Chicago music and poetry scene. She’s described her upcoming album Water Made Us, named after a line from the track “Good News” that references a Toni Morrison quote, as “the most personal and vulnerable piece of art I’ve ever made ... I hope it feels like a playlist that carries you through the life cycle of a relationship, whatever stage of the journey your heart may be in.”

Metric: Formentera II [October 13]

Last year, Metric came back with Formentera, their first LP in four years. This year, it’s getting a sequel in Formentera II. “The first part of Formentera started with a huge amount of anxiety and ended in a moment of personal release and freedom,” the band’s Jimmy Shaw explains. “But Formentera II takes that escape even further. The back half of Formentera II really takes you off the map completely and you end up in a place in your mind that is blissfully further from reality.” Lead single “Just The Once” finds the Toronto indie rock veterans exploring some disco-revival-adjacent territory inspired by Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia .

Levitation Festival [October 26–29]

Levitation Festival is the Austin psych fest that used to be actually called Austin Psych Fest. It’s got a killer lineup this year, including Flying Lotus, Oneohtrix Point Never, DJ Shadow, Armand Hammer, Panda Bear + Sonic Boom, Ty Segall & Freedom Band, Baths, Bully, BadBadNotGood, Beach Fossils, Sasami, Water From Your Eyes, Jockstrap, High On Fire, Blonde Redhead, Alan Palomo, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the Black Angels, Codeine, Death From Above 1979, Turnover, Uniform, Palehound, Speedy Ortiz, Militarie Gun, Mercury Rev’s Clear Light Ensemble, and former mortal enemies the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols.

Taylor Swift: 1989 (Taylor’s Version) [October 27]

Taylor Swift is going through and rerecording her back catalog to regain control of her masters (and stick it to Scooter Braun, who’s been losing clients left and right lately), and we’ve already gotten Taylor’s Versions of the albums Fearless , Red , and Speak Now . Next on the list is 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , coming out nine years to the day after the original 1989 and including five unreleased tracks. “To be perfectly honest, this is my most FAVORITE re-record I’ve ever done because the 5 From The Vault tracks are so insane,” Swift writes on Instagram. “I can’t believe they were ever left behind. But not for long!”

The Mountain Goats: Jenny From Thebes [October 27]

2002’s All Hail West Texas is one of the Mountain Goats’ most beloved albums. Over 20 years later, it’s getting a sequel in Jenny From Thebes, which is all about about a recurring character in the Mountain Goats universe first introduced in the All Hail West Texas track “Jenny.” “People like to hedge bets by using terms like ‘concept album’ but let’s be clear, this is a rock opera about a woman named Jenny, who buys a Kawasaki to ride as far away as she can from a town she’s been carrying on her shoulders too long,” the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle says. “If we’re going to do a sequel to a record that was recorded almost entirely on a boombox, why not do the opposite and make it as big as possible?”

Liz Phair Exile In Guyville 30th Anniversary Tour [November 3–December 9]

Liz Phair’s landmark debut album Exile In Guyville turned 30 years old in June. To celebrate the anniversary, she’s going on tour, performing the album in its entirety along with additional hits in a month-long jaunt across America. The tour kicks off November 3 in Pomona, California, and wraps up December 9 in Cleveland, with Blondshell and Kate Bollinger opening.

Dolly Parton: Rockstar [November 17]

That’s right: after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Dolly Parton is making a rock album. It’s called Rockstar , and it features a murderer’s row of genuine rockstars. Dolly got Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the two surviving Beatles, to do a “Let It Be” cover with Peter Frampton and Mick Fleetwood. There’s a Heart cover with Ann Wilson, a Police cover with Sting, a Journey cover with Steve Perry, a Creedence Clearwater Revival cover with John Fogerty, a Blondie cover with Debbie Harry, and a “Stairway To Heaven” cover with, uh, Lizzo. There are nine original tracks and 21 covers. Richie Sambora, Howard Lee, John Fogerty, Steven Tyler, Stevie Nicks, Waddy Wachtel, Joan Jett, Chris Stapleton, Miley Cyrus, Pink, Brandi Carlile, Elton John, Melissa Etheridge, Rob Halford, Nikki Sixx, Simon Le Bon, Linda Perry, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, Pat Benatar, Michael McDonald, and goddamn Kid Rock are on this thing.

Nicki Minaj: Pink Friday 2 [November 17]

Nicki Minaj has been teasing Pink Friday 2 , the sequel to her 2010 debut and her first studio album since 2018’s Queen , for years now. But it looks it’s finally actually coming out in November, and according to Nicki herself, it’s worth the wait. “The eargasms that YALL are about to have,” she tweeted in July. “Ooohhhh chiiiii huntyyyyy don’t make dat serveeeee.”

Travis Barker, Mark Hoppus, and Tom DeLonge of Blink-182

Last week, Billboard revealed its year-end Boxscore charts , ranking the top tours, venues, and promoters of 2023. That coverage included analysis of the new wave of genre diverse artists crashing stadium stages, and in turn, our charts. This week, we are breaking down the year’s biggest tours, genre by genre . Today, we continue with rock.

Rock music has been at the center of the touring industry for decades, with legendary acts like The Rolling Stones , U2 , and the Eagles controlling stadium calendars and delivering record-breaking grosses. That is still the case, as rock is responsible for more entries in the all-genre top 10, 20, 40 and 100 than any other genre.

But at 32.4% of all top 100 tours’ grosses, rock takes a dramatic hit from last year’s 42.5% figure. Combined with pop, the two central genres have lost a third of their total market share since the pandemic, as pockets of Latin and K-pop acts take up prime Boxscore real estate. And as rock accounts for many of the oldest artists in the top 100, with Latin and K-pop bringing up the chart’s youngest names, the future of rock bands as touring titans is blurrier than it was 5-10 years ago.

But with a new round of legacy tours from ‘90s and ‘00s bands, plus steady arena grosses from 21st century acts like Arctic Monkeys, Greta Van Fleet and Imagine Dragons, there is still plenty of juice for the coming years.

Scroll to check out the top 10 highest-grossing tours by rock artists, with such acts qualifying due to recent performance on Billboard ’s Top Rock Albums and/or Hot Rock Songs charts. Rankings are determined according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. All reported shows worldwide between Nov. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023 are eligible.

Page McConnell, Trey Anastasio, and Jon Fishman of Phish

$76.8M / 597K tickets / 41 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 24

Phish is among the most consistent touring acts, regardless of genre. From its annual destination event in Mexico to its reliable runs of shows at Madison Square Garden, the jam-band legends continue to one-up themselves, after winding up at No. 31 on last year’s all-genre ranking.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Flea and Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers

$77.2M / 657K tickets / 18 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 23

Red Hot Chili Peppers repeat in the year-end rock breakdown with shows in Asia, Europe and North America. Still, the band’s $77.2 million total doesn’t include the $48.2 million from its co-headline shows with Post Malone in Australia.

Matthew Bellamy of Muse

$92.7M / 1M tickets / 45 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 20

Muse makes its first appearance among the year-end top 10 rock tours since 2013, when the glam-rock band earned $43.2 million while on The 2nd Law World Tour. The European leg did the heaviest lifting, with nine of the top 10 grosses of the year.

Mark Hoppus from Blink-182

$95.7M / 692K tickets / 45 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 19

Blink is back with the biggest tour of its career. The original trio of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker reunited for 45 sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Things came to a head with two nights at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium, where blink-182 grossed $8.8 million and sold 43,600 tickets.

Guns N' Roses

Axl Rose and Slash of Guns N' Roses

$96.2M / 888K tickets / 31 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 18

Guns N’ Roses logs a second year between $90-100 million after being No. 8 on 2022’s genre Boxscore breakout. More shows after the tracking period’s cutoff puts the rock icons on tap for the ’24 ranking with $19.7 million already in the bank.

Dead & Company

Dead and Company

$114.7M / 845K tickets / 28 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 15

Dead & Company played its farewell tour between May 19 and July 16, yielding its first $100 million summer since launching as a touring unit in 2015. The peak was a three-night run at San Francisco’s Oracle Park to end the tour, earning $20.4 million from 118,000 tickets sold.

James Hetfield, Robert Trujillo, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett of Metallica

$125.8M / 1.2M tickets / 19 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 14

Metallica grossed more than $10 million in seven markets between Europe and North America, doubling up in Montreal, Paris and more. The M72 World Tour continues with scheduled dates through Sept. 29, 2024.

Depeche Mode

Martin Gore and Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode

$175.2M / 1.8M tickets / 47 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 9

The first of three rock acts in the all-genre top 10, Depeche Mode scores the biggest year of its touring career, blowing past 2017’s $123.5 million. Three shows at Mexico City’s Foro Sol on Sept. 21, 23 and 25 delivered the band’s biggest gross ever, at $15.4 million from 195,000 tickets sold.

Elton John

$210M / 1.3M tickets / 65 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 7

Elton John notches a fifth year on the year-end Boxscore recap with the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, having topped the abridged 2020 report. After all was said and done, set a new record as the highest-grossing tour in Boxscore history, regardless of genre. Over 329 shows, the trek earned $939.1 million and sold six million tickets.

Jonny Buckland, Chris Martin, Will Champion and Guy Berryman of Coldplay

$342.5M / 3.2M tickets / 55 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 2

Switching places with John from last year, Coldplay takes top honors as the highest-grossing rock act of 2023. The band’s spread covers shows in North and South America, as well as Europe, with dates in Asia and Australia in the 2024 tracking window. After kicking off in 2022, the Music of the Spheres Tour has brought in $664.5 million and sold 6.7 million tickets.

For the record’s 25th anniversary, the iconic artist is taking the album on the road , and she’s brining along her old rap group Fugees for good measure. August 30, 2023

As summer comes to a close, a busy season of live music wraps up. But an equally intense offering of concerts follows as fall begins. Mark your calendar for an upcoming season celebrating a huge variety of musical artistry.

Saturday, Sept. 2: The Current’s Music-On-A-Stick featuring The Hold Steady at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand

The days of the Triple Rock Social Club may seem like  a distant memory  to many. However, the lineup for The Current’s Music-On-A-Stick night at the Grandstand revisits the days of hopping over to the bar side to grab eats and libations, then heading back to a killer show. The Triple Rock hosted Craig Finn as part of a reunited Lifter Puller in 2003 when the concert venue side first opened, former Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman Bob Mould got loud as a solo act in 2013, and Dillinger Four have performed at the historic venue numerous times. Dillinger Four’s own members Erik Funk ran the joint with wife Gretchen. Yeah, the memorable jukebox that had a smattering of genres that normally didn’t come as part of your mom and dad’s jukebox won’t be present, but the memories stay fresh.  -A.E. Tickets , 1265 Snelling Ave, Falcon Heights

Sunday, Sept. 3: Greta Van Fleet at Xcel Energy Center Three brothers and a good pal from Frankenmuth, Michigan, comprise this foursome who quickly gained attention thanks to frontman Josh Kiszka’s uncanny vocal resemblance to a young Robert Plant. Equally praised and derided as the new Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet’s true fans span a half-century’s range of ages. With special guests Surf Curse. -L.T. Tickets , 199 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul

A woman in a stylish suit poses on an ottoman

Thursday, Sept. 7: Pretenders at 7th Street Entry How cute — the First Avenue website actually still has a “Buy Tickets” link for this one, as if they hadn’t disappeared in seconds. No wonder — Chrissie Hynde is one of the great rock singer-songwriters, a peerless front-woman, a real-deal icon. And in a room with fewer than 300? A dream. - M.M. Sold out , 701 Third Ave. N., Minneapolis

Saturday, Sept. 8: Ms. Lauryn Hill at Mystic Amphitheater To celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Ms. Lauryn Hill headlines an international tour, beginning in Minnesota. - M.R. Tickets , 2400 Mystic Lake Blvd. NW, Prior Lake

Saturday, Sept. 8: Ween at Surly Brewing Festival Field According to Ween, September is still summer. Gene and Dean Ween’s Summer 2023 trek across the U.S. — their first extensive tour since 2016 — is sure to offer a little something for everyone: genre-fluidilty, satirical lyrical narratives, unpredictable theatrics. - M.R.   Tickets , 520 Malcolm Ave. SE, Minneapolis

Sunday, Sept 10: North By North Loop Fest at Hewing Hotel Minneapolis’ Loop disappeared in 1954 with the demise of the streetcars, but the North Loop name sticks to a neighborhood that’s anything but history. This burgeoning beehive of activity will host a new music festival — and in homegrown spirit, its lineup is packed with local talent: Ber, Nur-D, Chastity Brown, Honeybutter, Mike Kota, and more. -L.T. Tickets , 300 N. Washington Ave., Minneapolis

Monday, Sept. 11: Black Country, New Road at First Avenue  Black Country, New Road exist adjacent to other English post-punk, art-rock bands like Black Midi and Fontaines D.C. This international tour comes in the wake of vocalist Isaac Wood’s departure, and the six-piece has decided to set aside their first two acclaimed albums and begin fresh. - M.R. With Daneshevskaya. Tickets , 701 N. First Ave., Minneapolis

Monday, Sept. 11: Janelle Monae at the Armory Janelle Monae tours in support of the recently released The Age of Pleasure , a sensual and celebratory conclusion to the robot-themed dystopian future that was the underpinning of past projects. All ages; with Jidenna, Flyana Bass, Nana Kweba. Tickets , 500 S Sixth St, Minneapolis

Monday, Sept. 11: Youth Lagoon at Fine Line Music Cafe With urika’s bedroom. Tickets , 318 N. First Ave., Minneapolis

Tuesday, Sept 12: Tegan and Sara at First Avenue  The indie-pop duo Tegan and Sara continue to tag-team around North America after more than two decades recording together. The tour follows the 2022 release of Crybaby. -M.R. With Carlie Hanson. Tickets , 701 N. First Ave., Minneapolis

Wednesday, Sept. 13: Bombino at Cedar Cultural Center “The Sultan of Shred,” per a notorious New York Times headline , the Niger singer-guitarist-bandleader Bombino is one of the great living guitarists. Think of “desert blues” and his liquid tone is what pops to mind. Two years ago, his fellow Tuareg shredder Mdou Moctar slayed a packed Cedar, and this show should be even more atomic. - M.M. All ages; with Paul Metzger. Tickets , 416 Cedar Ave., Minneapolis

Wednesday, Sept. 13: Death Grips at the Fillmore Notorious for pushing the boundaries of experimental hip-hop, the Sacramento-based group’s innovative sound and high-energy performance style have earned them critical acclaim. Pulling from electronic, punk rock, noise, and industrial sounds, it’s almost impossible to nail down their sound. -N.K. Tickets , 525 N. Fifth St., Minneapolis

Wednesday, Sept. 13: The Mars Volta at Uptown Theater The Mars Volta, helmed by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, trade in experimental freakout rock epics for psychedelically dark rock overtures on their 2022 self-titled album. Teri Gender Bender opening. Tickets , 2900 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis

Wednesday, Sept 13: Yard Act at Fine Line Music Cafe Hailing from Leeds, Yard Act gained recognition quickly. Their 2022 spoken-sung debut, The Overload, was met with a Mercury Prize nomination alongside Harry Styles and Wet Leg. Elton John joined the post-punk band for a rendition of “100% Endurance.” -M.R.   With Stuck. Tickets , 318 N. First Ave., Minneapolis

Friday, Sept. 15: 50 Cent at Xcel Energy Center 50 Cent is celebrating 20 years since his debut album to the masses, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, hit stores, which has sold over 13 million copies to date thanks to hits such as “In Da Club,” “P.I.M.P.,” “21 Questions,” and “If I Can’t.” BET Lifetime Achievement award winner Busta Rhymes, and Chicago crooner Jeremih will also perform. Tickets , 199 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul

Portrait of a woman through a gauzy filter

Friday, Sept. 15: Bully at First Avenue Alicia Bognanno’s urgent, grainy voice and bounding rhythmic sense make her songs seem urgent rather than merely propulsive. And Lucky for You, the fourth album from her band Bully, out this year, has some of her most instantly grabby songs yet. - M.M. With Wombo. Tickets , 701 Third Ave. N., Minneapolis

Friday, Sept. 15: Drive-By Truckers at Buck Hill Formed around the nucleus of Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood, Drive-By Truckers emerged from Athens, Georgia, as a true product of the New South. With wailing guitars and authentically twangy vocals, Drive-By Truckers call out injustice and heartbreak while relentlessly delivering irresistible, jam-heavy Southern rock. With special guests American Aquarium and Gear Daddies. -L.T. Tickets , 15400 Buck Hill Road, Burnsville

Autumn 2023 tours announced

Our first tour features an extraordinary multi-media composition for sound and video, which will be closely followed by a programme of awe-inspiring jazz and exquisite early music from an amazing line-up of Irish and international musicians.

The season kicks off on 19 September with Oscailt, a new Music Network commission by maverick Irish composer Jennifer Walshe . Oscailt opens as part of Dublin Fringe Festival before touring to Kildare, Limerick, Cork and Mayo from 19 – 26 September . Developed by Walshe and her ensemble with the help of secondary school students from across the country, this show will draw on their experience of growing up in a world mediated by technology, incorporating film, improvisation and artificial intelligence (AI) into the live performances.

Through a series of workshops, together they have explored and created sounds using instrumental, vocal and computer improvisation techniques that will feature in the concerts. Students will join Walshe and her ensemble on stage to perform some of their co-created material for audiences at their local venues.

Walshe’s fascination with AI and all its applications for music and performance will also be evident in the piece, which she’ll be presenting in collaboration with Elizabeth Hilliard (soprano), Nick Roth (saxophone) and Panos Ghikas (viola/electronics).

October brings the Sultan Stevenson Trio , led by the trailblazing young pianist and composer Sultan Stevenson. The trio is currently taking the UK jazz scene by storm and will be joined on stage for this tour by immensely talented saxophonist and Mercury Music Prize winner Denys Baptiste.

Stevenson has emerged as a musical force to be reckoned with, and his trio are hotly tipped for huge international success following the release of his incredible debut Faithful One earlier this year. This tour brings together four of the most exciting jazz artists the UK currently has to offer. Expect sublime and delicate playing alongside exhilaratingly high-energy musical exchanges from this powerful quartet who are touring from 24 – 29 October.

From 22 – 30 November a trio of internationally renowned artists Anna Dennis, Jonas Nordberg and Liam Byrne will perform together for the first time in Ireland.

Recently awarded Best Singer at the Royal Philharmonic Society’s 2023 Awards, Dennis is one of the UK’s leading sopranos. Paired with the captivating sounds of Nordberg on lute and Byrne on viola da gamba this is sure to be a magical musical experience.

This programme of early music will transport us from the musical landscapes of the Jacobean English drawing room to the sumptuous salons of Venice. Music, poetry and song will intertwine as the warm tones of lute and viola da gamba blend with the enchanting sound of the soprano voice. The tour will feature works by Dowland, Monteverdi, Purcell and Telemann alongside a new Music Network commission by Irish composer David Coonan.

Music Network continues to bring a rich and varied programme of concerts to communities across Ireland. Speaking about the announcement, Chief Executive Sharon Rollston said:

‘ We’re thrilled to launch our brand new season of tours, running from September to November. This adds to our work so far this year which brought live music to 18 counties with 26 partners in 30 venues through our National Touring Programme. We’ve also provided 10 artist residencies together with our partners, commissioned 7 new works by Irish composers and placed musical instruments in the hands of approximately 5,000 musicians, both amateur and professional, through our Music Capital Scheme. We’re aiming to finish this year as strongly as we started with an incredible line-up of musicians for audiences to enjoy this season. So, whether you are drawn to contemporary sounds, transcendent jazz or the elegance of early music, we hope you’ll find a concert you love at a venue near you. ’ Music Network has been bringing affordable, exceptional quality live music to Irish venues for 37 years. Our tours and programmes support musicians to develop sustainable and fulfilling careers and provide opportunities for performance and participation in live music in communities across Ireland. Tickets for Music Network’s Autumn tour season are available to purchase now at MusicNetwork.ie or from your local venue.

Girls Aloud

Six reasons why going to gigs alone is the best.

So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!

Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?

Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.

1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see

Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?

2. Meet new friends

It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!

3. The freedom

Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.

4 . It’s a cult

You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.

5. Confidence boost

Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.

6. Experience the music your way

Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.

So there you have it – doesn’t sound too bad now does it?! At the end of the day it all comes down to you and your artist, a concert will always be a shared experience whether with strangers or friends. The most important thing to do is have fun.

Your next gig awaits

It all starts here.

Create memories to last a lifetime

Whether it’s your favourite band, an evening with friends, discovering new artists or the seventh show on the tour, we are your go-to home for all things live music.

Don’t miss out on the biggest announcement and keep checking back for latest news and last chance tickets.

Taylor Swift kicked off the European leg of the Eras Tour in Paris.

In a nearly two-decade career, Taylor Swift had never performed in Portugal…until this weekend.

The superstar singer brought The Eras Tour to Lisbon for back-to-back, sold-out stops at Estádio da Luz in Portugal’s capital city. It was a weekend Swift said she won’t ever forget — and she’s already committed to coming back.

Swift, long praised for an authentic connection to her die-hard fans and for expressing gratitude for those who fill her arenas, delivered a pair of shows for Lisbon that those in attendance won’t soon forget either. When the Lisbon dates went on sale last July, tickets reportedly sold out within 2.5 hours. That’s a shorter amount of time than the concert itself, which kicked off at 8:15 p.m. and continued for three hours and fifteen minutes, ending with fireworks over the outdoor arena as she capped off the Midnights era with “Karma.”

The Eras Tour has been revamped for the European leg in the wake of Swift’s latest release, The Tortured Poets Department . She debuted songs from the album on the first European dates that kicked off earlier this month in Paris before continuing on to Stockholm and then Lisbon. But she saved one of the tracks, “Fresh Out the Slammer,” for a live debut in Lisbon during the surprise songs portion of the show.

“One of my favorite things about the Eras Tour is that, for me, it feels like going back through all of my favorite memories of getting to play shows for the last nearly 20 years of my life because we’ve gone on tour for almost every album I’ve ever put out,” Swift told the audience. “My big regret was that we didn’t get to take all of those tours to all of the places where I wanted to take them. And we absolutely should have come to Portugal on every single tour. This is not a mistake I will ever be making again. We are always going to come to Lisbon.”

Part of the reason for her early committal can surely be chalked up to how the crowd responded to seeing Swift for the first time in Portugal. The screams were, at times, deafening, and she received cheers for speaking Portuguese at several points during the show. (“Muito obrigada,” she said upon taking the stage; at two other points she asked for help by summoning security for distressed fans.)

During the Folklore/Evermore era, while Swift was seated at the piano, the audience erupted with cheers and applause that carried on for more than three minutes . So much so that the lights in the venue came on and Swift seemed caught off guard by the impromptu showing of love. She planted her hands on her head and said, “Oh my god. I love you.”

It’s official, I left my 🤍 in Lisbon. My first time in Portugal and you all made me feel like I was right at home. I’ll seriously never forget the way you treated us, the overwhelming love and passion and hands in the air and dancing and how you screamed every lyric!! Muito… pic.twitter.com/4KFQzl7U0j — Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) May 26, 2024

Back to Friday night: “This crowd has been one of the most memorable crowds I’ve ever played for. I think every time I’m not here from now on, I’m going to be wanting to come back here.”
